08 THE FOOD DUDE Krekel’s Custard & Hamburgers Showdown Krekel’s…from the creamy custard to the juicy burgers, it’s been a staple in Decatur since opening in 1949. You know there are different locations (five to be exact in Macon County), but would you believe us if we told you they weren’t all the same? They’re separated by everything from different menu items to the thickness of custard to the flavors of shakes they serve! Each location has a similar menu but not all feature the same selection, and some locations offer desserts other than custard. There are no brownie treats at the ones on Wood St and N Woodford St, but at the Woodford location you can find a shake flavor called Sweetheart. You can enjoy a classic banana split at three of the five locations, and I assure you, it’s to die for. The classic Krekel’s burger is a great option at any of the locations; some have a thin, crispy patty, while others are a bit thicker. The newest Krekel’s location is at 1355 N Illinois Route 48, and let me tell you it’s great. They have specialty shakes, which include Oreo, Cheesecake and Birthday Cake, that can only be found at a few select locations. Out of the 17 flavors of shakes offered, the Butterscotch was our favorite. Custard flavors are different from shake flavors, too. Custard is a treat that’s sure to make you smile and can be found at every location, lucky us! Their main four custards— strawberry, chocolate, vanilla and lemon—are what it’s all about, but the thickness is where they differ. The thickest in our opinion was the Mt Zion location’s custard. We recommend trying a cone with a strawberry-lemon twist. No matter what you order or which location you visit, you still get that great Krekel’s taste.

by T. F. DUDE

So who wins the Krekel’s location showdown? While all the competitors are winners in our eyes, two locations, Mt. Zion and East Main, have the classic Krekel’s rooster car, and that’s an automatic win!

SPOTLIGHT

Ride Into Summer with Coziahr Bike Nights

With motorcycles come…prizes? When you come to a Bike Night, that’s exactly what you get! Debbie Coziahr, owner of Coziahr HarleyDavidson, chatted with us about the weekly Bike Nights. “Our initial objective was really just to get people together regardless of what they ride.” It’s not just for riders; it’s for anyone who enjoys a good time with good people and…prizes! With the possibility to win, who could say no? Since starting the motorcycle giveaway with partners Cromwell Radio Group - The Fox Station and Mueller Distributing/Miller Lite in 2000, Coziahr has grown the events in more ways than one. Bike Nights themselves began in 2007 as an incorporation with the bike giveaway at the end of every summer. “The idea there was to bring people together every Thursday and to take them to different locations around town to support local businesses,” says Debbie. The turnout every Thursday was so successful that they had to add another night called Full Throttle Fridays. To qualify for prizes, pop into the store or check online to sign up each week. You can even sign up at the Bike Night, held 6 to 8 pm every Thursday, but don’t forget you must be present

to win! Cromwell Radio Group will announce winners every half hour, along with great music that will play all night long. Prizes range from t-shirts to the big giveaway of a motorcycle. This year Coziahr’s is introducing a brand-new prize, Harley Balls, with 100 to 200 balls passed out each week. If you get one, bring it into the dealership and claim your prize! The secret to their success is simple– “It’s just the idea of people getting together,” says Debbie. “There have been a lot of people who have made long-lasting friendships through Bike Night.” Finding out about upcoming events is easy; either check the Thrive calendar, stop by the store and pick up a card with the full year’s schedule, or check out the Facebook page every week to see events.

FIND RETRO FUN BY LAND OR BY Pedal boat & tandem bike rentals offer action for all ages Written by Beth DeBouck Photos by Stephanie Gagnon Oh, nostalgia! I feel like I’m revealing my age by admitting this, but I remember in the ’80s when families could rent paddle boats and kayaks on Lake Decatur. I always thought this was such a cool recreational activity for kids (and adults). This was back in the day when the thing to do was go to Paul’s Puttin’ Place for mini-golf, feed the ducks and then head to the Krekel’s on Eldo for a lemon cone with sprinkles. Recently, I was able to reminisce about the good ol’ days of growing up in Decatur with Shirley Hardin, co-owner of Macon Waves Pedal Boat Rentals. The business had its grand opening on Memorial Day weekend. While neither of us could remember who first operated those paddle boats in the ’80s, their existence obviously left an impression. Shirley says that fond childhood memories like those led her and husband David to open two of Decatur’s newest family-friendly recreational rental businesses.

Retro fun from page 14 In 2012, they gave us Tandemonium Tandem Bicycle Rentals. Families can rent a variety of bikes in Fairview Park for a minimal fee. David and Shirley set up shop near Dreamland Lake on weeknights, from 5:30 to 8:30 pm. However, because one of their more popular bikes is in need of repairs, you might want to give them a call first to make sure they’re out there. “Big Blue,” the large, blue quadracycle waiting on new parts, is just one of several unique bicycles you can choose. It’s built a lot like a buggy-style car, with two seats in the front and two in the back. The smaller quad bikes have two seats, and there are also cruisers as well as inline tandem bicycles. Just like the song my grandfather used to sing, “You’ll look sweet upon the seat of a bicycle built for two.”

The pedal boats seat a minimum of two and maximum of five people. Fees are per boat and range from $12 for 30 minutes to $30 for a full day. Hours are Saturdays and Sundays from noon to 7 pm (barring inclement weather, of course).

Shirley’s hoping that once “Big Blue” is repaired, it will be able to make an appearance at Nelson Park, where Macon Waves rents out its pedal boats. Both of their businesses operate through an agreement with the Decatur Park District.

He and his family are also repeat customers of Tandemonium since it’s something fun the whole family can do and provides exercise at the same time.

Located only steps away from the Beach House restaurant, Macon Waves has five Sun Dolphin Sun Slider pedal boats available for your boating pleasure. They supply life jackets of all sizes, and, yes, they are included in the price.

16 | July 2016

Jonathon Tish, who’s from Blue Mound but has been living in Decatur for the past year, decided to take his sons for a pedal boat ride on June 5. “We were actually anticipating this opening because my boys had never been on the water in such a manner,” says Jonathon. “The cost of the boats was extremely reasonable, and they were a lot of fun.”

If you’d like to know more about Tandemonium or Macon Waves or would like additional information about pricing, be sure to reach out to David and Shirley on their Facebook pages, or give them a call at 422-2668.

Not Your Muddah’s Summer Camps! Non-traditional summer camps specialize in creative fun by Angela Myers Did summer sneak up on you? Don’t despair. You still have time to give your kids a great summer camp experience. Just take a look at the unique learning experiences offered by day camps at the Children’s Museum of Illinois. Maker Camp might be the easiest for harried parents to get their children into. It requires no advance registration or commitment to future dates, and you don’t have to show up at a particular time. Just drop in between 10 am and maybe noon (projects take one and a half to two hours to complete, and each session closes at 2 pm) almost any Monday or Saturday through July. Your five-year-old or older child can come to one or several. And at just $1 in addition to admittance, it won’t break your budget, either. The Make Space, a partnership with Millikin University’s Center for Entrepreneurship, first began in the Museum last fall. The Make Space room contains a variety of interesting materials: recycled plastic containers, lids, cardboard, wood, circuit kits and crafty things like beads and pipe cleaners. Children are given no instructions—just a general challenge that can be modified to fit the child. A fairy house project morphed into a bughouse for one boy, says Abby Koester, Director of Education. The Museum was awarded the Creativity Garden Grant from the Association of Science and Technology Centers this spring to bring innovative

STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and math) learning to the community. Maker Camp is based loosely on an online camp hosted through Make, the official leaders of the maker movement. Children attending Maker Camp can view what other children around the world are building in this safe online community as well as contribute their own projects and ideas. The accent is on the process of building rather than the outcome, says Abby. No two projects look exactly alike. Children learn if they can’t make a project work to their satisfaction on the first try, they can figure out how to fix it. Along the way, they learn and develop new physical as well as planning skills. A recent project required that older students learn to use a hammer. Children also get the opportunity to learn about electronics with littleBits, basic components on plastic blocks that can be snapped together to meet challenges.

“We’ll ask them if they can make, for example, a monster that does two things, “ Abby says, “like make a noise and wag its tail.” The Children’s Museum also offers other day camps that are more traditional, and some are not yet filled. The pre-K camps for children from three to entering kindergarten include learning about monsters, germs, occupations and music. Camps for children entering first through third grades include mixing art and science, participation in a NASA design challenge and songwriting—with an opportunity to perform. You can find more information on summer camps still available at the Children’s Museum of Illinois on their web site at http://www. childrensmuseumofil.com/exhibits-and-programs.

Notes for Next Year Some other non-traditional camps in Macon County are filled, but two to keep in mind for next year: If you have a child entering grades seven through nine who is interested in technology, check out the Tech-Go Technology Camp for Creative Thinkers at Richland Community College (call 875-7211 ext. 6170 for more information). And if your youngster loves horses, consider the Beginners Horse Clinic, a 4-H program, at web.extension.illinois.edu/dmp/ downloads/63341.pdf.

THRIVE Q&A

ED SMITH

SOMETHING ABOUT HABITAT FOR HUMANITY THAT WOULD SURPRISE US That our Decatur affiliate will be 30 years old in 2017. We have built 64 homes in Decatur, and our tithe money to Habitat International has helped 55 families overseas.

Go slap around a ball, get some exercise, enjoy some live local entertainment, and benefit one of Macon County’s hardest-working charities? Sounds like a home run to us – so we were intrigued by the idea of the 1st Annual Swing for Homes Habitat for Humanity Wiffle Ball Tournament. Who better to give us the inside track than Habitat’s Executive Director Ed Smith? We prevailed upon him to share his summer fun strategies.

MOST UNEXPECTED THING TO DO IN MACON COUNTY I don’t look at it as unexpected, but I think many people really do: Go to downtown Decatur. There are great restaurants, things to do in the park, The Avon, and it’s all Decatur, not the big chains, just a good environment to relax, and it’s safe. WHY HABITAT FOR HUMANITY IS SO WELL SUPPORTED Habitat has great name recognition, and the mission of Habitat, to build homes as a way to help people with a hand up instead of hand out, has a proven track record. There are also various ways that people can help support Habitat through volunteer efforts, so it’s easy to find a niche that suits you in Habitat.

HOW SWING FOR HOMES CAME ABOUT I was contacted a few months ago by my nephew, Zach Dilbeck, who said that a group of his friends wanted to start up a charitable event and asked if Decatur Area Habitat would like to be the recipient of the funds raised. I had to laugh when Zach asked me because wiffle ball had always been a part of our family gatherings, so it seemed appropriate that they were looking at doing a wiffle ball tournament. WHAT WE CAN EXPECT AT SWING FOR HOMES I’m hoping a good, fun day with friends. I know they are talking about having a silent auction, food and drinks, and most of all some good competition and good fun. Get your team together. MOST EXCITING PART OF SWING FOR HOMES That it is something new that a bunch of civic minded “young” guys are trying to get started, not only to provide an event for the community but also to help a charity in the community. 1ST ANNUAL HABITAT FOR HUMANITY WIFFLE BALL TOURNAMENT - JULY 16 See full event details in the Thrive calendar.
