THE FOOD DUDE

Spicing Up Summer at Sólsa Sólsa American Burrito Co. is the new kid on the block in Decatur. With its grand opening just this summer, it’s off to an excellent start! You might notice a hint of familiarity with this place, and you would be right. It’s from the same wonderful minds that brought you the full-service restaurant Paco’s Sol Bistro located downtown. While Sólsa is affiliated with another restaurant in town, it’s off to its own success. From the moment you walk in, you’ll see a menu that can satisfy just about any craving you could have. They’ve got build-your-own everything! They feature burritos, tacos, salads…and smothered tots? Yes, you’ll have to see it to believe it, but I’m telling you they have tater tots that you can add homemade queso and any of their tasty toppings to. Another treat that’s sure to win you over is their loaded mac. The best part about this experience for this Dude was the guided menu process, easy and delicious. You start by choosing the menu item of your heart’s desire. From there, you just follow the path listed under each item. For example I ordered a burrito; the first step here was a choice between a flour tortilla or a bowl. Next you go on to pick a filler, protein, cheese, salsa, and last but definitely not least, your toppings. Picking the protein was key; the options were incredible ranging from ground beef and chicken to shrimp and scrambled eggs. Your

eyes did not deceive you; they have scrambled eggs! By the end of the order I was looking at the burrito of my dreams. Before checkout I had to make sure to grab a homemade cookie. That added just the right amount of sweet after a savory meal. They even have orders available for carryout, which means you can eat a delicious taco from Sólsa right in the comfort of your own home. Sólsa American Burrito Co. is off to what we see as a very saucy start right here in the heart of Decatur.

For All Your Eclectic Book & Gift Needs…Novel Ideas From the moment you walk into this eclectic general store, you don’t know where to look first. Novel Ideas Books and Gifts is an upscale primarily used bookstore with a gift shop located right here in downtown Decatur. It has a combination of books, unusual gifts and art décor. We chatted with owner Kim Soman about some of the exciting changes they’re making. “It all got started when the company I was with downsized. My husband had a used bookshop and he said, ‘I’ll teach you about the book business,’ and my parents had a gift shop and said ‘We’ll teach you about the gift business,’ and that’s how fast it was born.” Novel Ideas has been in business for 21 years this August, but that doesn’t mean things are exactly the same. Since the closing of Haines & Essick, people have come into the store asking for things they can no longer find downtown. “It’s all about solving problems and keeping these types of items available in Decatur,” says Kim. “My goal is to help people realize the value of shopping locally.” With that impetus they began incorporating new books and art supplies into their inventory. Books aren’t the only wonderful items available at Novel Ideas; this gift shop isn’t what you’d expect. The gift shop specializes in handmade artistic items, from Solmate Socks to the 7-foottall metal giraffe that towers over the store. Of course as Kim says, “You would have to visit the store to truly know what we have to offer.” The key to their success is her stubbornness. “It was an experiment; it wasn’t supposed to work; I was told it wasn’t going to work,” she says, but two decades later here they are. Downtown Decatur’s quirky book and gift store is here to stay. If there’s something you need, come in, and she’ll help you find it, or maybe, just maybe, add it to the inventory list.

ART SPEAK

by Jerry Johnson

A Summer of Art 2016 looks like it will be a “summer of art” in Decatur, with a variety of public art projects being installed around our city. As part of these efforts, the Decatur Area Arts Council has again arranged to have a mural painted on a local building. This year’s mural will be outside the immediate downtown area, though not too far, at 702 Eldorado St. Local artist Shani Goss will create a design on the east-facing wall of the building that contains G-B’s CDs, DVDs & Records. Shani Goss is a graphic designer and co-owner of Goss Grfx Advertising in Decatur. While advertising is her day job, she creates and sells artwork all over the country. Heavily influenced by Pop Art culture, music and typography, Shani’s style merges these elements in a retromodern, urban style, a style you’re likely to recognize from her many paintings displayed throughout Decatur, as well as the mural she painted downtown honoring Decatur’s late Mayor McElroy. Shani is the ideal artist for this particular project because her work often combines lyrics from her favorite songs and musical artists into largescale paintings. A building mural is certainly

10 | March 2016

“large scale,” and the business inside this building is an old-school music shop offering vinyl as well as CDs and DVDs. Shani plans for this mural to deliver a positive message. “I would like it to make you think, ask questions, and feel a certain something,” says Shani. She’s not sharing the design because she wants it to be revealed as it is painted on the wall. The Decatur Mural Project was established by the Decatur Area Arts Council in 2012, with the first mural painted on a downtown building in 2013. The goal is to arrange at least one mural each year somewhere around Decatur. As long as we have building owners willing to offer their walls, artists eager to bring their skills and generous folks ready to provide financial support, the mural project will continue to flourish. To make a gift to support this mural and future murals or to find out more, visit www.decaturarts.org/murals. If you’re driving down Eldorado Street and see Shani painting, give her a honk to thank her for her efforts; then think about how you can help make next year another “summer of art.”

Jerry Johnson is the Executive Director of the Decatur Area Arts Council and may be spotted pretty much anywhere art is happening.

30 Years in the Making: Decatur Celebration’s 1st DJ Showcase Written by Caitlin Loethen Photos by Stephanie Gagnon Circa 1986, then-seventh grade Decaturite Corey Bond experienced a chance auditory encounter with the DJ genre known as “house music” for the first time. He recalls a fellow classmate drumming his hand along to the electronic dance song Jack Your Body by Chicago-based DJ Steve “Silk” Hurley while singing along to the lyrics, and from that moment, Corey was hooked. In that same year, a momentous occasion occurred in this part of Central Illinois as well—the Decatur Celebration was born. Fast forward to the year 2016… During the weekend of August 5-7, the Decatur Celebration will have had 30 years under its belt. In three decades, the organizers of the Celebration still find ways to keep its relationship with the Decatur community fresh by featuring diverse acts at its Celebration. The year is no different. “This is the first year we’ve ever had a stage (at the Celebration) just for DJs; we’ve never had an all-day stage,” Corey says. An opportunity like this one will allow the featured artists to gain exposure for the music they’re constantly creating, as well as showcasing their style to a live audience. “This is not to replace Decatur’s core lineup but to diversify it,” he says. “Dance music and the DJ culture are a growing thing. By incorporating DJs into the Celebration, it looks toward the future by adding a different demographic.” Corey is a DJ himself and will be one of many artists performing on Saturday, August 6, from 11am-11pm in 35-90-minute sets. Other DJs hail from Decatur and the surrounding area, as well as outside of the state with performances by (in order of appearance) Jeff Tulo, Brian Neighbors (Neighbz), Corey Bond, Wes Young (Wes Clay), DJ Eva and DJ Mondo.

14 | August 2016

Located on the Back Lot Stage, Showcase will feature different genres including Top 40 music, Afro-Cuban, dub-step, EDM, house music, mainstream and tribal, to name a few. The DJs are essentially given no rules and “can play whatever they want to play,” Corey says, though curse words are prohibited since the Celebration is a family event. He likens his profession, in this liberating atmosphere, to an artist’s blank canvas, an allaround great way for DJs to express themselves musically. He’s looking forward to playing with the other artists, as well as providing them a platform to showcase their style. TOO WHITE CREW “We have shows that are G-rated and shows that are rated for G’s.” Like Vanilla Ice (2015 Decatur Celebration featured performer) once rapped, “Stop collaborate and listen…” to the Hip-Hop tribute band, Too White Crew, who will take the Funfest stage and perform on Friday, August 5th beginning at 8:00pm. Featuring a live, orchestrated band (no tracks) and their own Fly Girls, reminiscent of Fox’s In Living Color’s featured dancers. So help Corey and fellow DJ’s celebrate the Decatur Celebration’s first-time and hopefully, continued, DJ Showcase. Caitlin Loethen is a freelance writer based in Decatur.

Corey Bond

Based out of Decatur Illinois, DJ Corey Bond is a lifelong music lover and style influencer who has been involved in advancing DJ culture for 25 years. His love of music goes all the way back to his mothers 8 track tapes and his aunts extensive soul vinyl collection. This interest in music continued via his tenure of playing the saxophone through high school. Initially a music collector his foray into DJing began in 1991 while frequenting house music and hip hop parties at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. It was also during this era that he became an avid vinyl collector which introduced him to the burgeoning St.Louis rave scene. After graduation Corey continued his ravenous appetite for vinyl collecting while forming his own DJ business which focused on private events as well as nightclub work. Corey has been involved in many aspects of the Central Illinois DJ community being one of the first to actively play and champion what is now known as EDM or house music. Two highlights of his influence locally can be pointed to his series of highly popular IOU (invitation only underground) parties held at Robbie's on Merchant and his residency at Lincoln Lounge which transformed what was a popular mainstay into a full on dance club with Corey providing the weekly soundtrack. Citing influences from Derrick May to the late DJ AM and armed with a heavily curated international record collection numbering in the thousands Corey is poised to continue to delight and educate music lovers and push eclectic underground culture.

Jeff Tulo

DJ-2Lo, aka Jeff Tulo, has been spinning mixes for more than 20 years. A native of Chicago, DJ-2Lo was inspired by house music legends Frankie Knuckles and Bad Boy Bill as he mastered his skills playing everything from House to EDM in Chicago clubs like Diag, Shambles and Tin Lizzie’s. This “visual frequency,” as they call it, takes entertainment to a new level with the sights AND sounds of the hottest hits around. Most recently, he can be found rocking the clubs and special events in Springfield, IL with all of today’s top hits and videos. Check him out on Facebook at www.Facebook.com/DJ2Lo217.

Wesley Clay

With an intense attention to detail and an elaborate library of electronic music, Wesley Clay incorporates both the technical and collective sides of vinyl DJ culture. His collegiate background in audio engineering, MIDI programming/digital synthesis, and live sound reinforcement all contribute to his choice and selection within the studio and DJ booth. Wesley Clay exhibits an impenetrable style of mixing and blending within his performances which compliment his confidence behind the decks. His consistency and commitment endures to a degree of always impressing his audience and individuals alike. Wanda & Warrensburg – Perfectly Paired A cuppa joe and anything-but-typical treasures await your discovery Written by Angela Myers | Photos by Stephanie Gagnon When Wanda Timmons wound up owning a huge empty warehouse in the small town of Warrensburg, she did the only logical thing. She filled it. She filled it with a beauty salon, creatively refinished and repurposed furniture, unique gifts, Illinois-grown foods, fascinating fashion and most recently, a coffee shop. She filled it with faith, love, consignments from talented, imaginative people—and customers. Wanda and her husband Mike bought the warehouse at an auction “on a wing and a prayer,” she says. Then when the renters moved out in 2012, Wanda had a late-night, soulsearching discussion with her daughter, Megan Mason, about what they wanted to do with the rest of their lives. They decided not to seek another renter and opened The Perfect Pair with Megan’s beauty salon in the back the following May. But their journey wasn’t without potholes. Two years later, Wanda realized her vision of a boutique with her refinished and repurposed furniture required all her time, and when she wasn’t producing, money wasn’t coming in. “I wanted to create a business that, if I left, would continue to have value,” she says. She knew she had to come up with another plan. In 2015, Wanda, an employee and one consigner took a six-day research trip to Black Dog Salvage in Virginia to learn about the business of salvage and booth space consignment. They evaluated what they saw, and Wanda formed her “second vision.” “We have 37 regular consigners and several more in our open consignment area,” she says. “Everyone from retired hobbyists to stay-at-home moms trying to help pay the bills. We also have markets to pull in outside vendors three times a year.” But Wanda knows the journey isn’t over, saying, “A business needs to evolve and change so people want to come back.” Her business card says it well: “The Perfect Pair…Where Things Are NEVER The Same.” They’ve recently added a coffee shop, The Daily Brew. At the end of a trip to St. Louis last August, they were hot and thirsty and realized none of the shops they visited offered anything to drink. Chad Yeakley, the brother of Jody Bobbitt, a stylist in the salon, researched coffee brands and decided on Kaldi’s, a smooth-tasting roast from St. Louis. With a drive-up window and a small dining area, Chad’s shop can serve customers driving by on Route 121 as well as those who come in to shop. Their next project will include having Jacob Manning, art teacher at Warrensburg-Latham High School, design and create a new look for the exterior of the building. “In the beginning, it was, ‘We have all this space. How do we fill it?’” said Wanda. “Now it’s ‘What do we fill it with?’ I get so much satisfaction knowing I’ve created a store where people want to consign and want to shop.”

GET THERE A PERFECT PAIR Located at 266 N State Route 121, Warrensburg, The Perfect Pair is open 10 am to 6 pm Wednesday and Thursday and 10 am to 4 pm Friday and Saturday. The Daily Brew serves from 6 am to 6 pm Monday through Friday and 8 am to 4 pm on Saturday.

THRIVE Q&A

MATT WALKER

WHY MRI IS GREAT FOR MACON COUNTY I think the reasons that MRI is great for Macon County are truly as diverse and numerous as the list of services that they provide to their 800 clients. Whether it’s helping children reach their full potential or providing an adult with disabilities the ability to achieve more independence, MRI is directly contributing to the ongoing success of our community.

When we hear a local will be competing in a 24-hour obstacle challenge, our ears perk up— and when we hear his proceeds benefit Macon Resources Inc. (MRI), we really get interested. Because while we want to tell the world what an awesome group they are (not to mention an unmatched THRIVE delivery team powerhouse), we’re not so sure about heading to Las Vegas to complete the most 5-mile course laps in 24 hours. So we asked Matt Walker, what gives? And when you aren’t training, where in Macon County can we find you?

WHAT THE TOUGHEST MUDDER WILL DO FOR YOU AND MRI One of the great things about events like this is that they tend to pique people’s interest a little, which makes them excellent opportunities to give back and help out worthy charities and causes. Obviously I hope to raise a considerable sum of money for MRI through this effort, but beyond that, my goal is to substantially raise the awareness that members in our community have with regard to MRI.

SOMETHING ABOUT MRI THAT WOULD SURPRISE THE AVERAGE DECATURITE Personally, I had no idea that all of the license plates in the State of Illinois are manufactured right here in Decatur at MRI’s facility, made mostly by their clients. FAVORITE DATE NIGHT ACTIVITY My wife Jennifer and I usually wind up enjoying a nice dinner at one of the many great restaurants in downtown Decatur. Sometimes we’ll even split the night between a couple of places, one for the entrée and one for dessert. We also love going to The Avon for a movie and of course a bag of that popcorn! FAVORITE FAMILY OUTING This time of year we love taking the kiddos to the Scovill Zoo. We have three boys, ages 7, 4 and 11 months, and the older two love the penguins and the snakes. We always end the outing with some time on the playground, which is really one of the best you’ll find anywhere. HOW TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE I may be taking on obstacles for 24 hours in November, but MRI’s clients overcome obstacles every single day, and the services at MRI are making that possible. We’re making it really easy for people to stay connected - visit www.24HoursForMRI.com or like our page on Facebook. They can make donations in any amount, small or large, directly to MRI. Also, any business or individual who donates $200 or more will become a Bucket Level Sponsor, and not only will they see their logo or name on the side of one of the buckets that I’m carrying at local 5Ks and fun runs, but I’ll also increase the weight inside the buckets in honor of their generosity!
