Safety Friends
Friends of Argenta hosted a Safety Day on August 13. Demonstrations, food and fun filled the afternoon. The Twin Towers beam from the 9/11 World Trade Center was on display, leaving an enduring reminder of the lives lost. The beam will become part of the permanent memorial in Decatur's Nelson Park.
Lantern Parade
Fairview Park celebrated decades of summer fun with the 80th annual Lantern Parade & Summer Bash on August 3. The Greater Decatur Youth Band, Scovill Mobile Pet Zoo and retired Decatur Jumpers demonstration kept guests happy until dark when the custom-designed lanterns were released.

Decatur-Forsyth Classic
For 32 years, fans throughout Central Illinois have traveled to Decatur to watch players from around the world compete to earn their spot on the LPGA Tour. This year, the tournament at Hickory Point Golf Course showcased a three-day, 54-hole stroke play professional tournament featuring a purse of $130,000.
Razzle Dazzle Dinosaur Invasion
The Decatur Civic Center was transformed into T-Rex Planet the second weekend in August. The walk-thru exhibit showcased life-like animatronic dinosaurs set in realistic scenes featuring information about the various dinosaur species on display.

The Razzle Dazzle Good Times Parade is a Decatur Celebration tradition that kicks off the first full day of activities in Downtown Decatur. This year's parade featured area marching bands, creative floats, beauty pageant winners, the Decatur Celebration King & Queen, belly dancers and even an appearance by Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus.
Decatur Celebration The streets of Downtown Decatur once again became the backdrop to the city's annual street festival: The Decatur Celebration. The 3-day event brought hundreds of thousands of people to the downtown area and provided local, regional, and national acts on 8 stages. Headliners this year included Thompson Square, .38 Special, Jonathan Jackson + Enation, King Michael and Morris Day and The Time. In addition to musical acts, the Celebration hosted the 21 Film Project, Heinkel's Hot Dog Eating Contest, and an adorable baby contest.

The All New Bizou While I didn’t spot any celebrities like Ben Affleck on my dinner date with Ma Dude (what, you never take your mother out for dinner?) at Bizou the other evening, I did experience a little taste of the changes happening under its new ownership. Instead of bread, you get a complimentary plate of chips and hummus. (Watch it because there’s a kick to it). After ordering drinks, we indulged by getting two appetizers. Being a sushi fan, I hoarded the sashimi plate ($13), which comes with four pieces of salmon and four pieces of tuna. Ma Dude, who is not much of a sushi fan, humored me by trying a piece and declaring, “It was good.” We also tried the Caprese Pizzette ($9). Usually a caprese starter (olive oil, mozzarella, tomato, basil and balsamic glaze) is served cold, but this, being a pizzette, comes on a flatbread cut up like a small pizza. The mozzarella is warm and melted. I enjoyed it because it was different from the norm, and I could pick up one of the four pieces and eat it in one go instead of having to cut up everything with my fork and watch it fall all over the table. For the entrée, I tried the Bouillabaisse, which comes with mussels, clams, shrimp, tomato, potatoes and asparagus stems, as well as two pieces of garlic bread ($24). It was a pleasantly simple dish, with a tasty saffron broth. The mussels and clams weren’t especially large – obviously a factor when living in the Midwest – but I liked that the focus was the broth and the seafood. Nothing was forced, and nothing overpowered the rest of the flavors. An interesting addition might be some calamari or even pieces of white fish. By now, you should know how much the Food Dude enjoys the wonderful restaurants that can be found in downtown Decatur, so it’s always great to see these businesses thriving. Even more, I like when they innovate and try something new – whether it’s the décor or menu. When looking for a fine dining experience, make sure to consider Bizou.

Area musicians come together in massive performance How many miles does it take for an idea to travel? For Storm Edwards, the idea traveled from Cesena, Italy, through Western Europe, across the pond into the United States, and stopped at the heart of central Illinois—Decatur. Which, according to Google Maps, equates to 4,846 miles of traveling. Traveling back to the point of origin… In 2014, exactly 1,000 musicians gathered to perform simultaneously the Foo Fighters’ hit song Learn to Fly in hopes of catching the attention of the legendary rockers—it worked like a charm, and the Foo Fighters came and gave a live performance to thousands of fans in Cesena, Italy. Storm, who is Program Director of the Cromwell Radio Group and Afternoon Host for Decatur’s own 106.7 The Fox, believed that here in Decatur we could pull off the same thing, but her reasons were quite different. “I just wanted to do something positive, and we have really, really amazing musicians here in central Illinois,” she says, “so I wanted to do an event for them and highlight them and people they might not get to play with and meet other musicians.” This drive to create a moment set rhythmically in time turned into 2015’s 10x10 Jam where, in just eight short weeks, volunteers and 157 musicians

consisting of bassists, guitarists, drummers, vocalists and a conductor, ranging in ages from 10 to 70, played the Foo Fighters’ My Hero. For the 2016 vision, Storm says, “We took feedback from the artists who played in it last year, and we picked out Tom Petty’s Runnin’ Down a Dream for this year’s song. We have a new logo; a new name, just calling it The Jam 2016; and a new location: Central Park in downtown Decatur.” One important factor is staying the same: The event will be completely free for those attending and performing. More than 120 musicians have signed up thus far. “Every day more people are signing up, and I’m confident we will beat the 157 musicians who attended last year,” says Storm. “It’s all about getting everybody together and doing something as one and creating a once-in-alifetime moment that can’t ever be redone.”

out and support the cast as they put on a show that is sure to be unforgettable! Next, watch The Great American Trailer Park Musical, a wonderful play brought to life by Theatre 7. The show is lively and sure to make you laugh. Life is not ideal for Jeannie and Norbert Garstecki in the Armadillo Acres Trailer Park—she’s agoraphobic, and he hates his job. But they’ve made it work for 20 years. Change is in store, though, when Norbert falls for Pippi, a stripper-on-the-run from her Magic Marker sniffing, dimwitted boyfriend Duke. This musical would be great for a girls’ night out, a fun getaway for mom and dad or an outing with friends. All are sure to enjoy the laughs it’s certain to bring! Not for the kiddos, though—this comedy features dark humor and adult language. Come watch the cast light up the stage on October 14, 15, 16, 21, 22 and 23 at the Decatur Civic Center. The struggle between right and wrong is one we’ve all faced, and few plays bring that struggle to light better than Jekyll & Hyde, which Decatur Underground Theater will be presenting this year in November at the Decatur Civic Center. The play will open on Friday, November 11, at 7 pm, with shows to follow on Saturday, November 12, at 7 pm; and Sunday, November 13, at 2 pm. PRAIRIE CELEBRATION – TRANSPORT BACK IN TIME “The sweet smell of wood smoke and of food cooking on the grill, the sound of a tomahawk as it slices into a slab of oak”—these are some of the sensations that transport visitors to a simpler time during Prairie Celebration at Rock Springs Nature Center, says Jeff Tish, Program Services Manager for the Macon County Conservation District. The annual living-history event runs Saturday, September 10, 11 am to 5 pm, through Sunday, September 11, 12 to 4 pm with free admission. More than a dozen artisans representing traders and trappers of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries will rendezvous in an encampment of white canvas tents to demonstrate and sell pottery, baskets, iron works, weaponry, homspun yarn and other hand-crafted items from the days of early settlers. Tours of nearby Homestead Prairie Farm, an 1860s farmhouse listed on the National Register of Historic Places, take visitors into the daily life of Macon County residents: cooking on woodstoves, sleeping many to a room on knotted-rope beds, 28 | September 2016
playing grace hoops in the yard, growing their own food in an heirloom garden. Such experiences show the modern visitor “how people survived quite nicely without the digital world,” Jeff says. Wagon rides around the park and guided hikes through the restored prairie slow the pace even more, allowing to visitors to take in the beauty of the grasslands, woods and wetlands of the 1-acre site. Events at the Visitor Center include a Reptile Meet and Greet, where folks can interact with and learn about native reptile species, and a Macon County Wildlife exhibit of native species. Kids can collect tickets at various stops around the park to redeem for prizes—think Pokémon Go in 3-D! Hot food and cold drinks will be sold at the concession stand near the trader camp. From living history to natural history, Prairie Celebration and Rock Springs Nature Center offer “an excellent opportunity to take a child on an adventure they will remember for a lifetime,” says Jeff. --Will the Deep River Grinders’ repartee with Lawyer Eden result in so many fines that they won’t have enough money for their return trip to Indiana? Fans of vintage base ball can find out for themselves when three of the most venerable and colorful teams of the Midwest—Decatur’s own Rock Springs Ground Squirrels, the Vermilion Voles of Danville, and the Deep River Grinders from Hobart, Indiana—convene for a round-robin set of matches played with the rules, equipment and customs of 1858. The games hearken back to the times when gentlemen’s clubs competed for recreation and camaraderie, and the post-game speeches and libations were as important as the final score. Fielders play bare-handed (“No gloves, no fear!”); balls caught on the bound are out; and swearing, arguing or other unseemly behavior can result in loss of a day’s wages. Spectators can expect sometimes spectacular, sometimes dubious acts of athleticism upon the hallowed grounds of Beautiful Trobaugh Field. What is certain, however, is that a rollicking
good time will be had by all, in a family-friendly atmosphere: base ball the way it was meant to be played. “For the glory of the game!” is the cry often invoked. “Come on out for the fun,” says Ground Squirrels co-captain April “C’Mon Mamma” Prasun, “and we just might recruit you to play!” Matches are scheduled to commence around 10 am and should wrap up around 3 pm. Shade is plentiful, but spectators should bring their own chairs or blankets.

MOST EXCITING THING ABOUT ARTS IN CENTRAL PARK? I love the excitement in the air at Arts in Central Park. Central Park is beautiful, and there is an intimacy with all the artists being within the park. The strolling musicians are nice, and the variety of work by the artists always amazes me.
It’s no secret that our county is home to a hotbed of cultural activity, but how do you get in on the art? Who better to tell you how to get your art on than the Decatur Area Arts Council’s new Events and Services Coordinator, Andrea Evey? We asked her for the inside track on Macon County art action.
FAVORITE ART-CENTRIC ACTIVITY IN DECATUR AREA? My personal favorite art-centric activity is attending a Cocktails and Creations class. It’s a fun time to grab the girlfriends and your favorite bottle of wine and enjoy making a variety of art projects to keep or give as gifts or just learning how to make something…at all skill levels. FAVORITE FAMILY OUTING? We recently had a fun outing strolling through the new Scovill Sculpture Garden between Scovill Zoo and the Children's Museum. Our children are 3 and 14, and the sculptures, like most art, are something any age can enjoy and discuss. MOST UNEXPECTED ART IN DECATUR AREA? The huge murals, like the Decatur Staleys and Chicago Bears on one of Decatur’s downtown buildings. It’s well done and a part of Decatur’s history. I can’t wait to see the new mural on Eldorado Street. 32 | September 2016
SOMETHING ABOUT ARTS IN CENTRAL PARK THAT WOULD SURPRISE PEOPLE? I was surprised to learn that Arts in Central Park invites artists from all over the U.S. This year, there are artists from seven states: Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Missouri, Wisconsin, Michigan and Florida. WHY BREW HA HA IS GREAT FOR MACON COUNTY Brew Ha Ha brings an old-country cultural experience to Macon County with the opportunity to drink German beer, eat German food and wear fun “traditional” costumes. Having a giant tent in a downtown street decorated for Octoberfest, being entertained with the sounds of German music, and then fun dancing to a rockin’ party band makes it a fun night that you can get only once a year. And, it helps out the Arts Council! WHAT'S NEW FOR BREW HA HA What’s new for Brew Ha Ha is that it’s my first year “creating” this fun event for the Arts Council.
