Pokemon Go on the Quad Millikin University hosted Dennis Lab School students and their family members for an evening of Pokemon Go on the Quad behind Shilling Hall. Pikachu even made an appearance and posed for photos with the PreK - 8th grade gamers.
Cocktails & Canapes The Children's Museum of Illinois hosted an adults-only garden party in honor of their new director, Amber Kaylor. The Retro Camper Photo Booth was on site catching memories, while the Museum's newest exhibit, a jumbotron lite-bright, lit up the party!

Autumn Art & Animal Fest Artisan booths and four-legged friends filled the streets of Argenta on September 10. Horse rides, Scovill's Mobile Zoo and a mermaid entertained guests young and old. A bags tournament and business expo rounded out the small-town event that truly had something for everyone.

Millikin University held its first home football game of the 2016 season against Rose-Hulman Institute for Technology at Frank M. Lindsay Field on September 10. The Big Blue's next home game is during Homecoming weekend on October 1, playing North Park University at 6pm.

217 Lounge on Merchant Street hosted Nick Alexander and Noah Williams for a one-nightonly show on Thursday, September 8. This duo has been playing together in the local music scene for years and entertained the weeknight crowd with rock, pop, country, soul and blues. Finder's Market Book Fair St. Mary's Hospital hosted a book fair in the Assisi Room that was open to the public on Tuesday, September 13. Books Are Fun provided adults' and children's books, toys, outdoor and home goods, electronics and seasonal items.
Progress City was full of fun finds and delicious treats the second weekend in September. Unique vintage and handmade items filled the marketplace while the hum of a bluegrass band kept shoppers moving. Homemade ice cream and one-of-a-kind bundt cakes were just as sweet as the finds!

Macon County or Little India? Over the years, Decatur’s food options have continued to grow, especially with more diverse cultural options. You know that I love trying out new foods and sharing my delicious findings with you. So the Dude headed out to Decatur’s Indian restaurants to see what they had to offer. I checked out Tandoor over lunch on a Sunday afternoon. Tandoor resides in what was once Pastabilities downtown, and I found the environment to be open, bright and inviting. My friends and I were seated immediately, provided with a drink and then offered the buffet to partake at our leisure. If you’ve never had Indian food before, Tandoor’s buffet is a great place to start! I was able to fill my plate with a little bit of everything to see what I liked. I was happy to see that the most popular items were available in the buffet as well. My glass was never empty as we enjoyed our meal, and we were well cared for by the staff. After my experience at Tandoor, I was eager to check out Maharani. I’ll admit, I wasn’t sure what to expect with this little restaurant inside
a Forsyth gas station. But don’t let looks deceive you—Maharani was exceptional! I was seated immediately, received friendly service and had my food within 15 minutes. The first dish the server delivered was chips and sweet chutney. It was an interesting flavor combination that was a great way to start my meal. When my order arrived, it was clear that everything was fresh cooked and made to order, and every bite was delicious! The portion sizes were perfect, and even the rice was good enough to eat on its own! If you’re curious to try something new and experience some Indian cuisine, I would definitely recommend giving both Tandoor and Maharani a try. Tandoor’s buffet is great for the more timid food-goer who would like to dip a toe into new food. Meanwhile, Maharani is fantastic for someone who’d like to dive into Indian food with fresh, made-to-order meals. Either way, you won't be disappointed!

MidState Kick Starts Soccer Fever MidState Soccer Club's winter season kicks off soon, continuing its mission of cultivating a passion for soccer year-round in Macon County. Travel teams are hitting the road, and the fall league is underway for MidState’s Youth Soccer League (the non-travel league affectionately known as “missile” for MYSL). Winter programs are quickly approaching, and players of all ages can participate in indoor leagues at the DISC (Decatur Indoor Sports Center). Leagues range from Little Kritters (ages 3-4) all the way up to high school and adult. The winter program is broken into two sessions, November-December and January-February. The organization is growing on and off the field, recently adding new Youth Soccer Trainer Sef Asheg from England and continually expanding its community outreach. One of its more popular efforts has been partnering with Millikin Soccer for MidState Night, held this year on September 17. MidState players had the opportunity to meet players, get autographs and play a mini-scrimmage on the turf under the lights. The Millikin soccer teams have developed a natural synergy with MidState over the years. “It has helped us develop a great relationship with the community and provides 10 | October 2016

the opportunity for young players to watch a high level of play,” says Millikin Head Men’s Soccer Coach Chad Jones. Senior Midfielder Tucker Mathieson, a top scorer and captain for the Big Blue, played for MidState and is now a captain for the organization. Young athletes look up to the players at the collegiate level, realizing they have potential to play Division 3 soccer in their own backyard one day. Successful outreach efforts like this spur MidState to continue its mission. “MidState also has plans to create a program called Kids Soccer Adventure,” says Director Colin Bonner, “where trainers and coaches visit daycares and preschools in the community to improve children’s fine motor skills through activities related to the sport.”

New Conductor Makes Beautiful Music for MDSO Dr. Sergey Bogza is establishing his vision for the Millikin-Decatur Symphony Orchestra (MDSO). The newly appointed director of the MDSO has brought the right combination of conducting and teaching to the orchestra and to the Millikin University School of Music. With the Orchestra’s annual Labor Day Pops concert and September season-opening performance in the books, Bogza is already making the most of his opportunity to make beautiful music with a collaborative spirit. “When people come to MDSO concerts, I think they'll be surprised,” Bogza says. “I’m trying program pieces that people can relate to and easily understand. It might sound simplistic, but simplicity is extremely difficult.” A native of Taganrog, Russia, Bogza knew he wanted to become a musician at the age of 12. He’s now living out his passion of conducting and performing music that he hopes leaves a lasting impression on audiences. “I've yet to find anything that compares to a moment when you realize that the music you are performing is touching and resonating with the audience,” Bogza says. “The moment transforms the audience and the performers into a single organism that experiences something that's only possible through music.” Before leading the MDSO, Bogza was the artistic director of the Mesabi Symphony and Willmar Area Symphonic Orchestras in Minnesota and served as assistant conductor of the Symphony Orchestra at the University of Minnesota. In addition to his work on the podium, he is an internationally recognized composer and pianist. 12 | October 2016
“Being director of the MDSO is a multifaceted position. I set the vision for the organization, select all repertoire, serve as personnel manager and work with Millikin performance faculty,” Bogza said. The MDSO will be in the spotlight with upcoming performances on October 22, featuring guest artist Gabriel Cabezas, and on November 11. “Guest artists are not only the orchestra's guests; they're guests for the entire city,” Bogza says. “All guest artists whom I'm bringing this season will give concerts in public schools and teach masterclasses. This is paramount to building connections and sharing the importance of art.” It’s safe to say that Bogza’s energy and expertise are moving the MDSO forward into a bright future.

It’s The Walking Dead meets Call of Duty. Tactical Zombie Laser Tag is in its second year at The Scream Haunted Adventure, located at 680 W. Eldorado St. in Decatur. Dominate friends and strangers alike in a game of Free-for-All or High Score as you maneuver around an open warehouse-turned-Biohazard Wasteland while trying to find cover behind barriers; hazardous waste cans spilling toxic sludge; or thick, radioactive fog. The Scream Haunted Adventure is produced by Creatures of the Night (a group of local Haunted House experts) as a fundraiser for Decatur Celebrations, Inc. Continued from page 29 “We included laser tag the last two weekends, and it was very popular, which is why we are having it all month this year,” she says. Zombie Laser Tag will be open every Friday and Saturday from 7 to 11 pm starting September 30 through all of October. Tickets are $4 per game or $6 for two games and can be purchased on site. “It’s something fun that parents can do with their kids,” says Lori, “or that a group of teenagers can do with their friends.” If you do have children who get scared by Haunted Houses, they can still have some Halloween fun by playing a few rounds of Zombie Laser Tag. Justin Penrod, owner of Alpha Dog Entertainment, says the time limit for each round is three to five minutes (you get more time to play when it’s less busy). Alpha Dog Entertainment is a mobile laser tag company out of Ludlow, Illinois, that sets up laser tag fields for birthday parties, family reunions and other special events. They’ve gone all out for this year’s Zombie Laser Tag by decorating props for the biohazard waste-land themed setting, including the hazardous metal waste cans you’ll see. They also supply the iCombat tactical laser tag equipment. Players are given realistic-looking metal paintball guns with an infrared sensor/ receiver built into where paintballs are normally fed. You won’t have to worry about burdensome vests, headbands or tangled wires messing up your costume. There are enough guns to accommodate 12 players at a time. In addition to Scream Zombie Laser Tag, you can dare to enter the Scream Haunted House ($14 for general admission). Haunted House-goers are forced to travel through 15,000 square feet of fright that includes “30 horrifying scenes, double vortex tunnels, a grave crawl and squeeze wall,” all while you’re trying to escape the clutches of zombies, beasts, monsters and other nightmare-inducing characters. There’s also a Scream Haunted Warehouse Tour ($14), which guides you through abandoned portions of the warehouse rumored to be haunted. Using only flashlights, small groups can explore the cafeteria, kitchen and locker room of the old Mueller Warehouse. Both attractions are most definitely not for the faint of heart. As for special events, a Glow Light Night will be featured on October 28 and 31, when guests will be supplied with a single glow stick as they make their way through the Scream Haunted House. More than 100 volunteers brought last year’s event to life by dressing up as costumed-characters, maintaining props and scenery, assisting with makeup and taking tickets. Centennial Cinema Celebrations in Downtown Decatur By: Caitlin Loethen
There’s no business like show business, as two locally owned downtown institutions can attest. It’s an epic autumn for Decatur, with both the Avon Theatre and the Lincoln Square Theatre reaching a milestone of epic proportions when they turn 100. THE AVON THEATRE On November 28, 1916, the Avon Theater experienced its opening night with a full house of moving picture goers. As successful as the Avon first was, its doors closed, and the movie theatre was eventually left abandoned. Thankfully, the theatre has changed hands and undergone major renovations. Self-professed Head Honcho Skip Huston and his current administration have racked up 18 consecutive years of operations. When he took over in 1999, there was no manual for how to run a theatre successfully: “[We had] to make it up as we went along.” His methods have definitely served the Decatur community well as he diligently works to bring not only blockbuster movies but also critically acclaimed movies and independent films that only limited theaters are able to show. 28 | October 2016
100th Anniversary at the Avon General Manager Ashley Petty couldn’t be more pleased to be at the helm of the Avon’s 100th. “My first date at 16 was at the Avon,” she says. “My prom was held here—at the time it was the ballroom. The Avon has been a constant for me and the community—it’s always been here. Now, I’m the GM for its 100th anniversary.” With the actual anniversary celebration under wraps, Skip does divulge, “The Avon is planning something very special for the 100th anniversary.” Another anniversary Huston would like to point out: On October 1, the Avon Twins Annex will be celebrating its 12th anniversary. With lots of reasons to celebrate, you might want to grab a bag or two of the Avon’s renowned popcorn and join the jubilations.

THE LINCOLN SQUARE THEATRE Nicknamed “Decatur’s Oldest Theatre,” the Lincoln Square Theatre opened a month before the Avon on October 27, 1916. Like the Avon, the Lincoln has experienced its own shares of ups and downs and had actually been closed for many years. “That 100-year mark is very emotional for everyone on this board, and it’s very emotional for me,” says Board President Adam White. He’s been with the theatre for 10 years starting as a security volunteer and has seen the theatre through the toughest times, when they didn’t think it would be able to stay open. “My dream is to keep this theatre alive, keep this jewel of downtown Decatur alive, to keep making new history to add to past history,” he says. “I can say as long as I am here with this great board, we will keep this theatre alive.” More on page 30 October 2016 | 29

Gallagher and the 100th Anniversary The prop comic known as Gallagher is bringing his “Jokes on You Tour” to the stage on October 28 to help celebrate this momentous occasion for the Lincoln. Gallagher’s show is also one of his final stops before he exits stage left and enters into his retirement. Doors will open at 7 pm, and the show’s start time is scheduled for 8 pm, with tickets available online via the Lincoln’s website or at the door. A week before Gallagher’s performance, the Lincoln will host its 100th birthday party on Friday, October 21. “This theatre is here for the community, so we are doing this to say ‘thank you’,” says Adam. Check the website for updated information on the scheduled birthday party. The Lincoln’s motto, “When you restore a theatre, you return to a city part of its pride,” is a testament to the wills of both the Avon Theatre and the Lincoln Square Theatre. So come on out and show your Decatur pride by basking in the glory of their well-earned 100th birthdays.

Fall means migration, an optimum time for watching birds of all feathers. It’s also time for the Illinois Raptor Center’s Owl Prowl, so who better to tip us off to the County’s awesome autumn activities than Program Director Jacques Nuzzo? We asked him for an insider’s tips.
FAVORITE THING TO DO IN MACON COUNTY DURING AUTUMN Mainly bird watching. Migration is starting, and it's amazing to see what birds are passing through Macon County. People wouldn't believe what comes through here, even in downtown Decatur (where I live). FAVORITE FALL DATE NIGHT ACTIVITY IN MACON COUNTY I love camping this time of year. I’m a tree climber and have several types of tree platforms that can be camped in. Camping in a tree at night listening to owls and other creatures, and then waking up and rappelling down to the ground to have coffee and breakfast combine for an awesome experience. MOST UNEXPECTED THING ABOUT THE RAPTOR CENTER People often bring something out, or see us on a program, and are in disbelief that we are here in Macon County. Even though we have been here for over 20 some years, it’s not uncommon to hear, “I've never even heard of this place, and I’ve lived here all my life.” WHY THE RAPTOR CENTER IS GREAT FOR MACON COUNTY It's a one-of-a-kind facility built right here in Macon County. We take in birds from all over the state. We do programs in this state and others. We are making wonderful discoveries through our partnership with Millikin University and our research projects. MOST EXCITING PART OF THE RAPTOR CENTER Nothing is ever constant. There might be slow days… Then it can just become as thrilling as a call from the state on an injured bald eagle on a river somewhere and we have to go find it. WHY HOST THE OWL PROWL The IRC Owl Prowl (OP) is the single most successful program we have ever had. Owls can be kind of mysterious, and the OP is a great way to meet almost every kind of owl that is in or passes through Illinois up close and personal. You can also see them in the habitats that they are found in. If it's a good night, our wild resident barred owls drop by for a visit and will converse with me (hooting), which is always fun and exciting. WHAT CAN PEOPLE EXPECT AT THE OWL PROWL A nice fall night hike on a beautiful piece of property right here in Macon County. Several species of live owls will be met, and hopefully a few wild ones will drop in for a visit. Everything you want to know about owls and their natural history will be talked about that night.
