Behind the THRIVE might be a little misleading when we talk about Kim Mangan. She’s one of our boots on the ground, traveling all around Macon County to gather pics and deets for our popular Out & About section each month. The Decatur native and West Ender remains immersed in all things Macon County, working for her Alma Mater in Millikin’s Office of Alumni & Development and staying community involved as a Baby TALK board member. All this while prioritizing her husband, two kids and one furbaby at home. For Kim, it’s no big thing, though— she knows how to balance her many responsibilities with some out and about time of her own. Preferably including long, leisurely rides on her scooter or a seat front row and center at one of the area’s many live music events—and always with her camera, of course!

THE FOOD DUDE
by T. F. DUDE
Full Steam Ahead to Port Royal Gastropub The Food Dude’s Logbook: 08 October 2016 I embarked on a journey down Oakland Ave in Decatur to satisfy my stomach’s incessant rumblings. As we steered our vessel nearer our intended destination, I exclaimed, “Land Ahoy!” when the Port came into sight—The Port Royal Gastropub that is—with plans to claim its food and drink as my own. Casting our anchor for landing, we settled in the Port’s parking lot, and upon entering the establishment, we were immediately greeted, seated and provided with water as our refreshment while we awaited our hors d’oeuvres—mozzarella sticks. As THRIVE’s certified Food Dude, I always research which route I’ll take when selecting a proper course for my meal. The Port’s Facebook page provided me with wonderful insight. I caught sight of the Daily Special before venturing out: 6 Cheesy Buffalo Boneless Wings with a side of Onion Rings and celery for $5.99. With my selection made, my dining mate was immediately drawn to the Fajita Burger that comes with a side of salad for $8.99. As the waiter brought out the salad, I found myself lettuce green with envy. The cucumbers, onions and tomatoes, as well as the romaine lettuce, all looked so fresh and crisp, almost as if they came straight from the garden before arriving on a salad plate.
Our entrees arrived shortly after, and I could not believe my eyes… the onion rings were colossal, and I was sure I had found the food version of the Northwest Passage after seeing my dinner arrive. The sauce on the wings, mixed with the cheese, was just the perfect blend of mild and spicy and did not overwhelm my palate. The Fajita Burger was served on a grilled onion bun and topped with lettuce, tomato, onion, tortilla strips, covered in pepper jack cheese, pico de gallo and jalapenos and drizzled with chipotle queso. As hot as those toppings sound, the burger was extremely flavorful, leaving one’s stomach wanting more. Alas, our food adventure came to an end, our stomachs were full and the tab was paid, so we set our anchor aweigh—well satisfied with our food selection for the day.

On with the Show! Child 1st strikes a chord with dueling pianos fundraiser
Helping local children is music to our ears, so we were keyed up to hear the Child 1st Center will be hosting its 2nd Annual Fall Fundraiser on November 12 at the Masonic Temple in Decatur. This event is guaranteed to be a good time with food, drinks, a silent auction and entertainment of a dueling pianos show by 176 Keys. Tickets include dinner and entertainment, plus a cash bar provided by Decatur’s own Locals 101. Proceeds will benefit the children and families in both Macon and Piatt Counties served by the Child 1st Center, and the event is sponsored by Hickory Point Bank, State Farm Al and Melanie Schelling, Deano’s Backhoe Service and JL Hubbard. The Child 1st Center provides advocacy services to children who have suffered from abuse and/or violence. If you have never been to a Dueling Pianos show, now is your chance! Bring your spouse, co-workers, family and friends because the show will get you up out of your seat and on your feet. The crowd is sure to be singing, dancing, laughing and loving every minute of the performance! Better get your tickets in advance, though, because they will sell out! This year, Child 1st Center is expecting over 200 attendees for the event. “It will be a lot of fun, with a very energetic atmosphere…definitely a good time,” says Lacey Wallace, Community Outreach Coordinator of

the Friends of the Child 1st Center Committee. The committee is helping spread the word about the event through social media, flyers, radio advertising and mainly word of mouth. This fun night out is a great way to support our local community while having a great time. One main difference from last year: location. In 2015, the event was held at the Lions’ Club in Mt. Zion. This year, they have chosen to host the event at the Masonic Temple, mainly for more space and a centralized location, Downtown Decatur. This is an awesome opportunity to share some laughs, support the Child 1st Center and get up movin’ and groovin’ with your friends!
GET THERE: CHILD 1ST DUELING PIANOS FUNDRAISER November 12 Decatur Masonic Temple, 224 W. William St., Decatur Doors open at 5 pm; dinner served at 6 pm, show starts at 7 pm. Tickets for evening are $30 in advance and $40 at the door, the night of the show. Purchase tickets in advance by calling the Child 1st Center at 422-6294.

Taekwondo Masters Face Off in Decatur
Premier US tournament kicks off in November Written by Angela Myers Photos by Sarah Jane
Joshua Sharp isn’t teaching his two-yearold daughter to break concrete blocks—yet. But he is teaching Savannah her forms (fundamental positions and movements), and she’s been working on breaking boards. She’ll show off what she’s learned when she takes part in the Midwest Open TaeKwonDo Championship competition on November 19 and 20. This is the 16th year for the event, one of the premier taekwondo tournaments in the US. Savannah might be the youngest of more than 500 competitors from all over the country, but not by much. The tournament accepts students from the age of three—with no upper age limit listed. Another of Sharp’s students, Rod Carter, in his early 60s, could be one of the older competitors. A latecomer to the discipline, he didn’t start until he was 48. An embezzler struck his business, and the frustration and anger were almost more than he could handle.
Women often come to taekwondo first to learn self-defense, but a few go on to compete. One exception is Robeena Iqbal. “I started by accident,” she says. She was walking around the mall, and through a big glass window she saw people practicing martial arts. “I have a life-long passion for kung-fu movies,” she admits. And she couldn’t pass up a special offer for a three-month tryout.
“I needed something more than an hour by myself on a Stairmaster,” he says.
“I wanted to see if I could be as good as in my dreams. And I love to compete, meeting new people and new friends.”
Rod knew that for centuries, martial arts has been used to relieve stress, so he decided to try taekwondo. It worked almost immediately. And he discovered he liked it!
Robeena just won three first places and a grand championship in a tournament in mid-October and will compete in the November tournament.
Although most taekwondo students in the Midwest are children, Joshua emphasizes that the sport is perfect for entire families. While you are expected to always do your best, you aren’t required to win—even in a competition like the upcoming tournament. Children learn courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self-control and indomitable spirit, which are the tenets at Sharp’s. Older adults also maintain flexibility and can adjust the workout to fit their needs.
Sharp’s Taekwondo, located in Hickory Point Mall behind that big glass window, organizes and sponsors the tournament. Joshua is a seventh degree (dan) black belt, certified by the Kukkiwon, the Korean national academy for taekwondo. He‘s also a certified instructor and referee. He started training in 1982 at the age of 10, when he received lessons as a birthday gift. A 1990 graduate of MacArthur High School, Joshua has won multiple championships in taekwondo at the state and national levels and a championship in the Pan-American games. A US Navy veteran, where he was a hospital corpsman, he also has a background in security.

Taekwondo from page 13 Taekwondo is a Korean martial art that incorporates head-high jumping, spinning and fast kicking. Mural paintings in the ruins of royal tombs show that taekwondo has roots that date back to the early first century. During the years of Japanese occupation, the discipline would have been lost, had not masters secretly handed it down to students until after World War II. But each master had his own style, and they had to be unified before taekwondo as we know it was created. After the Korean War in the ’50s, taekwondo spread around the world. In 1992 it joined judo to become the only Asian martial arts included in the Olympic Games. Today, many Americans are familiar with taekwondo because of popular television shows and movies starring famous practitioners like Sarah Michelle Gellar, Chuck Norris and Jean-Claude Van Damme.
The 16th Annual Midwest Open TaeKwonDo Championship will be held starting at 10 am November 19 and 20 in the Decatur Conference Center & Hotel. Competitions will be held in forms, sparring, breaking (planks of wood and concrete blocks) and weapons. The forms, breaking and weapons competitions are open to students three and up. Registration can be completed in advance or on the day of competition. Spectators also can pay in advance or at the door. More information and tournament packets are available online at www. midwestopentkd.com.

In 2013, ownership of the bar changed hands when Craig Garceau and Craig Wilson, owner of Woody’s Bar in Decatur, took the reins. If you live around the Mt. Zion or Long Creek area, you’ve likely stopped into Sliderz at least once. It’s basically become a staple on the east side of Decatur since 2007 when it was opened by Dave and Sherri Birch. In 2013, ownership of the bar changed hands when Craig Garceau and Craig Wilson, owner of Woody’s Bar in Decatur, took the reins. At Sliderz, you can grab a beer, watch a game and order something off the lunch or dinner menu. You can also expect a regular calendar filled with live music. They’ve received several nods over the years as a “Best Place to Hear Live Music” in Central Illinois by the Herald & Review’s Reader’s Choice Awards. Before you ask, yes, they do play more than country. “We invite a variety of bands to play,” says Tiffany Maxey, who’s been a manager at Sliderz for six years. “Country, pop, rock. There’s a mix of everything. Something for everybody to listen to.” On Wednesdays, Sliderz features an acoustic night, where four bands rotate throughout the evening from 7-10 p.m. On Fridays, there’s a DJ or a band. Every Saturday there are usually two bands during the day. Might be country or it might be some good ol’ ’60s or ’70s rock ‘n’ roll. They’re working on offering additional live music from 9 pm-1 am on Thursdays as well. “We like to use local bands,” says Tiffany, “But some come from as far away as Chicago, Springfield, Champaign or Bloomington.” The typical cover for nights with live music is $5, but for the more popular bands that come only once or twice a year, you may have to pay a little extra. Those bands include Feudin’ Hillbillys, the Mix or Brushville. Prince Night, a Prince cover band out of Champaign, is also an audience favorite. Tiffany says they do consider customers’ suggestions when deciding what bands to book, but bands also reach out to Sliderz on their Facebook page about performing. “I’m only 30, and I remember when I was young, my parents listened to live music all the time. Live music was the thing,” she says. “It’s so much more exciting than hearing it on the radio. Being able to watch these bands perform is great. They’re so entertaining.” More on page 28

Not only are these bands coming out to play live music for folks, but they’re also true entertainers. Tiffany noted that at least 90% of the bands come out on stage dressed in costumes and wigs. “It’s great to be able to watch these bands perform,” she says. “And our customers, they love it.” If you want to be kept in the loop about who’s playing each week, Sliderz makes it easy. You can either keep an eye on their Facebook page or sign up for their text club, which will alert you to upcoming events and special offers. They also host benefits a few times a month.
