A look back at last monthâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s happenings

Vespers

For fifty-seven years Millikin Vespers (which means "evening prayers") has signaled the beginning of the holiday season for many people in Decatur/Macon County. Over 350 musicians join together for this joyous musical event presented annually at Kirkland Fine Arts Center. Songs from past centuries combined with familiar carols and arrangements create an evening of seasonal warmth for the whole family.

PopLocal Local artisans brought an empty building downtown to life on the weekend of December 9. PopLocal, a hip, hand-crafted market, offered art, jewelry, home goods and more. Customers took home gifts and grandeur to celebrate the season.

A look back at last monthâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s happenings

Big Blue Cookie Party Over 5,500 cookies were served by Millikin faculty during the annual cookie party. This year featured a Christmas tree decorated with flags representing the home countries of the university's international students. Various music ensembles played Christmas music throughout the afternoon as students moved through the cookie and punch line.

Christmas Walk Holiday shoppers and families seeking Santa filled the streets of Downtown Decatur during the annual Christmas Walk. Lines formed at Santa's house in Central Park and across the street where the horse-drawn carriage picked up new passengers. Groups of carolers could be heard along Merchant Street and Prairie Street while the shops offered extended hours.

FLL Robotics

The FIRST LEGO League (FLL) tournament drew local robotics team to Hope Academy on December 10. Robotic design, presentation and core values were judged during the performance rounds. Kids were actively engaged all day through a variety of educational experiences.

Decatur Big Band hosted its annual holiday show at Lock Stock & Barrel on Saturday, December 10. LSB patrons were treated to an afternoon of holiday classics featuring many local musicians.

Lacrosse Might Be the Oldest New Sport in America Developed as long ago as 1100 AD, lacrosse was played by the Iroquois who lived in what is now Upper New England in the U.S. and in lower Ontario and Quebec in Canada. Lacrosse also might be the fastest growing sport in America. The rapid growth of the program at the Decatur Park District is an example of how its popularity has exploded in the last few years. “We invited college players from Illinois Wesleyan do a lacrosse clinic for around 25 kids in the spring of 2015,” says Tony Albertina, who is in charge of the Decatur Indoor Sports Center’s lacrosse program. “Then the Park District staff, including myself, introduced the sport to more than 3,300 kids in P.E. classes in Decatur and the surrounding areas. In the spring of 2016, more than 80 kids signed up to play on our lacrosse teams.” Decatur started with eight- to 15-year-olds, and now the Park District offers a program for “Little Laxers” (lax is short for lacrosse), ages four to seven. They hope to be able to field a high school team soon. Tony says adult teams also are being considered. Lacrosse is played with a small ball and a stick that looks like a basket on the end of a long handle. Both men’s and women’s lacrosse, two versions of the same sport, are offered at the DISC. Men’s lacrosse tends to be more physical, requiring special padding, while women’s lacrosse requires only goggles. Little Laxers learn basic skills using soft balls.

A class for Little Laxers starts February 8, and a Holiday Lacrosse Clinic for boys and girls ages eight to 16, whether they’ve played or not, will be offered on Presidents' Day, February 20. Winter Skills Camps for girls and boys starts January 14. Spring classes for boys and girls start in March, and the Decatur Park District will compete in the Central Illinois Lacrosse League (CILAX) Spring Tournament. I'm a sucker for a nice portfolio... but this one puts the rest to shame! You'll be hard pressed to find a portfolio that tops these durable handmade leather masterpieces from Oberon. To begin with, they're beautiful! The artistic reliefs on the cover tell a story of their own and give them a great feel in your hand, too. I find these are perfectly sized (loaded with a replaceable 5" x 8" lined notepad) but you can also purchase a larger version. Fall into a BBQ Joint for BBQ Lovers Barbeque! It’s something everyone enjoys. As someone who has done a fair share of cooking my own BBQ, making both the sauces and the meat, I have realized that a majority of BBQ places don’t take time with their meat, and it becomes nothing more than a delivery system for mediocre sauces they claim are great. Really good BBQ stands on its own without any toppings whatsoever. The sauce should be a compliment to the meat. Fall Off The Bone is a great place for a true BBQ lover. Walking into the shop on North Water Street, you immediately can smell the smells of a good BBQ kitchen. I ordered a sampling of several items, but I’ll focus on my favorites and the reasons I’ll be going back. The BBQ beef sandwich had a more than adequate serving of beef on the sandwich, with a good coating of sauce. The meat was the centerpiece here. Fantastically tender, good smoke flavor. The sauce was a coating on the meat. It didn’t drown the flavors or make the bun so soggy that it became a silverware meal. Their chicken wings were also a welcome surprise. In Decatur, I’ve noticed many places drifting toward smaller wings and drummies. The whole thing consists of two bites and it’s gone! Fall Off The Bone’s wings, though, were full and meaty, 30 to 50% bigger than I’ve had

in town for many months. Fried to a near perfect consistency, the wings were juicy from the first bite to the last. They were even good as leftovers! I would have liked to sample more flavors, but the flavor I did try was great and, like the BBQ, didn’t smother the meat or overpower it. The staff were friendly and helpful also. I would definitely recommend this establishment to anyone.

When an idea jumps up, you listen! Decatur Public Library was approached by Jeremy Coulter, who wanted to host a Film Club at the Library. We encouraged his vision, and we devised opportunities together. He had a genre in mind, and he had the expertise to lead a group. Unfortunately, the Library did not have the rights to show movies. We brainstormed a multitude of ideas. What if we could offer movies to watch ahead of the meetings? What if the group met at the Library later to discuss it, after more thought? We booked a room, set a time and waited. Two interested parties attended and more expressed interest, but lack of a movie to show on demand was problematic. Several people borrowed the movie that Jeremy had chosen, except a discussion never happened. We became disheartened. How could we do better? Well, for 2017 the Library has purchased a movie license. We now have the ability to show as many movies on library premises as we wish, free to the patrons. Our idea is to offer at least one movie each week. We are considering movies for the whole family, foreign films and new releases. Jeremy excited to host a Film Noir series beginning with The Maltese Falcon.

Take a trip back to a time of free love and great music with the Art of Classic Rock exhibit at Millikin’s Kirkland Fine Arts Center. The exhibit, which focuses on the creative art movement and the impact classic rock music posters had on the ’60s and ’70s, will be held January 26 from 5 to 7 pm. Attendance for this one-of-a-kind experience will be free and open to the public!

The exhibition is part of the Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) at Millikin University, which teams students with faculty to spend a summer creating and researching a project. We chatted with Ed Walker, Millikin associate professor of art, and Sydney Doherty, a junior graphic design major, who are working on this exhibit to really get the feel for what it will be about.

From magenta to cyan, the colors and vivid imagery will be endless. Step back into the era of love and music by just walking in! Peace, Love & Posters is a celebration of the art, music and culture of the ’60s and ’70s. “Overstimulated… that is a good way to put it. From the fluorescent vibrant colors to the cultural icons these posters feature, there will be plenty to experience,” says Ed. The featured posters come from the private collection of Marc Willis of Decatur. “He inherited them from his brother in San Francisco who found the collection by getting posters off telephone poles and in the windows of shops, making them original to the period.”

But wait…not only will there be original posters featured; they are also giving the exhibit the feel of stepping back in time! It will feature memorabilia from all aspects of the time period including furniture, clothing, vintage album covers and even lava lamps to give you that retro vibe. “There was the drug culture, the free love culture, and most importantly, you had the music,” says Ed.

This wonderful exhibit will help collide all aspects of ’60s and ’70s culture to relive the psychedelic festivals of the past. “The public will have the opportunity to relive that magical atmosphere again or experience it for the very first time,” says Sydney. “It will be an interactive experience for people to enjoy all elements of the time period.” Much time and effort have been wrapped up in this unique exhibit. Sydney spent the summer researching, cataloging, photographing and curating the poster collection in order to plan the opening exhibit. “There are over 400 posters and postcards in the collection, and I photographed and cataloged each individual piece; no two look the same,” she says. With such time and care taken, you know this exhibit has to be one for the record books. Speaking of books, a book that you can get at the exhibition is also being created. “It will include the story of how the exhibit came about and really explain the story of how the posters’ imagery relates to the culture of that era,” Ed says. “The focus for the posters is on the imagery that was being used to promote the bands of the period and how it was all done by hand, yet they were really able to push and design something special.” Sydney’s goal for the exhibit is to share the magic and art of the posters with everyone. She

wants the exhibit to be accessible enough that people who have never been to an art exhibit before feel welcome. Her motivation for this exhibit was the extensive range of issues these posters address with such intense colors and psychedelic illustrations. “I was inspired that a time of such cultural upheaval could influence such authentic and original artwork,” she says. Her hope is to share these posters with as many people as possible and to inform people about how the issues these posters deal with are issues we still face in society today. “I believe we can learn from the commentary that was made in the art of the past and use it to shape the art of our generation.” Be sure to relive the era of peace and love on January 26 with this unique experience, Peace, Love & Posters.

Coffee Companion: Your Guide to the Local Grind Words & Images by Sarah Shorthose

One big perk, pun intended, of our Soy City is that at any moment in town you’re not more than a few miles away from a caffeine hot spot. As a self-proclaimed coffee-holic, I’d say that’s a win! But not all coffee-shops are identical, so consider this your guide to the grind. Before we start, you should know my tastes will be biased toward the STRONG side of things, but I’ll sprinkle in some tips for those of you who are not into chest-hair-growing black tar with a hint of caramel (ok, that might be an exaggeration but not by much). Let’s get it out of the way right now and throw out the number one name that comes to mind when you think coffee anywhere east of Seattle: Starbucks. For our purposes we’ll stick to our locally yummy options, but let me say I’ve recently become addicted to the Doubleshot on Ice.
