When you’re talking about journalism or writing, one of the first rules of thumb should be, do not use Wikipedia as your source. So those who know me will be surprised at the above, but I couldn’t have said it better myself. There’s no secret sauce to writing, or writing well. In fact, “good writing” is so subjective and so determined by context that being a chameleon is as important as having the mechanics down. Said a different way, what pleases your college professor likely won’t please your first employer (unless that employer is an English journal). At THRIVE we prize good grammar, of course, and we wrestle over the Oxford comma and how to format times (pm or p.m.) and whether to write dates with or without ordinal indicators (March 1 or March 1st). But really, writing is as much tone as it is technique. We proudly buck the system, resist the usual. We write like we talk, and sometimes that’s just not right. You’ll find dangling participles, prepositions ending sentences and split infinitives galore. But you’ll also find passion, possibilities, and above all, fun. We’ve got the write stuff. We see the writing on the wall. We’re write here with you. Because Decatur (and Macon County), we like it here. Write on.

Polar Plunge Over 380 participants plunged into Lake Decatur to benefit the Special Olympics of Illinois during Decatur's Polar Plunge event on March 4. Teams of plungers representing area schools, businesses and law enforcement entities were judged for creativity of costumes ranging from super heroes to penguins.

DPS Spring Music Fest

Decatur Public School students participated in the annual DPS Spring Music Festival in March. Student musicians were excused from classes during the school day to rehearse with band members and instructors from area schools and performed a concert for the community that evening.

A look back at last monthâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s happenings

St. Pat's Parade

Decatur's annual St. Patrick's Day Parade wound through downtown Decatur on Saturday, March 11, and kicked off St. Patrick's Day celebrations throughout town. Parade-goers lined the route to view the parade floats and to gather candy, bead necklaces and informational fliers handed out by parade participants.

Run to LSB

The Run to LSB once again led the St. Patrick's Day parade through the downtown area before heading west on Wood Street to Lock Stock & Barrel for a special post-race party with complimentary green beer and food. Participants were encouraged to dress in costume for the 2-mile race.

Jim Gill's Campaign for Play Postiche Open House Jim Gill, award-winning musician and author, engaged young and old alike at Oreana Grade School on March 6 with his Nationwide Campaign for Play. His energetic strums and cardio dance moves created a full family experience.

Decatur's newest spa, Postiche, hosted its grand opening on March 9. Certified in oncology esthetics, the team at Postiche rolled out a line of customized skincare, brow prosthetics and wash-and-wear wigs.

L-Win Motel Farewell Tour

On March 12, The Winery hosted L-Win Motel, an acoustic 3-piece band that has been well known to the local music scene since the early 80s. Although technically retired in 2004, the band still gets together to play a show or two each year.

Rotten Egg Hunt Lets Adults Be Kids Again

Hop on over for cash, gifts and free park passes For the second year, adults have the opportunity to hop down the bunny trail. A sellout in its first year, the Rotten Easter Egg Hunt is back by popular demand. “I think the nostalgia of hunting for Easter eggs is what brings people out,” says Jamie Gower, Director of Recreation and Facilities for the Decatur Park District. “Our guests also enjoyed having a chance to redeem their eggs for cash prizes, gift cards and passes.” More than 300 people competed in the inaugural event at Scovill Golf Course, which presents a variety of hidden opportunities for entertainment throughout the night. “It was a great event; people had a blast,” Jamie says. “It was great to see the adults getting excited about hunting for their eggs.” Besides hunting for thousands of rotten eggs and having the opportunity to redeem eggs for prizes, hunters can rock to a DJ spinning tunes plus partake of pizza and adult beverages (for the 21 and up crowd). For the more competitive in the crowd, games like bags and water pong provide additional chances to show your prowess.

A fun new addition to the Rotten Easter Egg Hunt this year: the Pre-decorated Easter Basket Contest. Jamie says that the contest was inspired by past participants who brought their own Easter baskets to use in their hunt. One note: You won’t want to leave home without your flashlight, as this event’s festivities kick off at 6:30 pm and end at 9 pm. “This event is a great way for our community to have fun at an event, while bringing them back to their childhood,” Jamie says. All proceeds benefit the Decatur Park District’s arts and youth recreation programs.

Letting You in on LaGondola's Secret Menu Items This month I got to go to one of Decatur’s trademark restaurants. If you’re from Decatur, you know that we have a few restaurants that are considered “classics.” Even those who move away find themselves making a stop at these places when they come back home for a visit. And one of these much-loved local treasures is LaGondola Spaghetti House. LaGondola has been open in Decatur for the past 35 years and is owned by the Couri family. There are two locations - one on the Water Street across from St. Teresa High School and one in Mt. Zion. Everyone loves their sweet red sauce and their delicious breads, so it’s no surprise that the most popular menu items are the Torpedo sandwich, spaghetti, garlic bread and cinnamon bread. Are You One of the New & Growing Artists of Central Illinois? In January 2016 a brand new Facebook group started to float around in our timelines. This group wasn't just like any other group, though. New & Growing Artists of Central Illinois started from nothing, promising its 30-ish members opportunities and recognition they may not be able to get anywhere else. Members started sharing their art and socializing with other artists, asking constructive questions about media and events, making new artist friends and winning the cover photo for a week of recognition. In the meantime, Lindsey Harrison, administrator of the page and owner of L&L Studio, was taking thorough notes about those who shared their art, and in March 2016, Decatur's first Facebook group-based art show was held at Heroic Age Art Center in Mt. Zion. Local Artists Gallery Show has featured two active artists from the Facebook group each month in an art show, showcasing as much of their art as could fit on the walls. Now, a year later, Lindsey has many projects coming up for the New & Growing Artists. A fine art adult coloring book is currently in production, as well as a coffee table photo book featuring all of the cover artists of 2016, and two summer/fall art festivals are planned, with the first, MerryMakers Art Fest, on June 24th from 10-4pm. February saw "Grow Your Art Business," a New & Growing Artists exclusive seminar featuring local business and marketing professionals who volunteered their time and advice to local artists, and group meetings began in March. This Facebook group began as a social experiment to see what could be done in the community using only Facebook and within a year grew into a warm, friendly, supportive collection of 200+ strong and talented local artists who are more than willing to jump into any project and be involved in any ideas suggested by admin.

VETERANS AND FRIENDS HELP GOLFERS OF ALL WALKS TAKE A SWING

Weekly golf league makes golf possible for all By Angela Myers Ernie Jones didn’t have to pull himself up by his bootstraps after a stroke left him unable to use his right side. He had help from his brothers, Dale and David. Instead of bootstraps, they used his belt. Ernie had been looking forward to retirement and being able to play as much golf as he wanted. The stroke could have ended that, but Dale wasn’t willing to see his older brother give up his dream. He researched one-handed golfers, and he and David spent the summer teaching Ernie to play using his left hand. “We held him up by his belt at first to help him balance,” says Dale, who wondered about others with similar problems. He approached the Decatur Park District and was allowed to start a program for disabled golfers. His friend Joe Hammel, golf pro at the Scovill course, suggested opening the league to veterans and calling it Veterans and Friends. He also offered a collection of donated clubs for Dale to rebuild to meet each member’s individual needs free of charge. Having one of those special clubs and learning to swing without shifting his weight to his left leg helped Phil Young play again after a stroke about five years ago. “Now he sometimes beats his brother,” Dale says. The group includes more than 50 members from age 24 to the mid-90s with a variety of physical problems. Some are battling PTSD. The

league “gets the golfers off the couch and out in the sunshine,” as Joe says, three afternoons a week. They have their own block of time with reduced greens fees. “Nobody is pushing them; they don’t get in anyone’s way,” says Dale, “and it’s a win for the golf courses as well because they have about 34 people playing at a time that’s hard to fill.” Members who need help negotiating the course can bring a helper, or Dale can find someone already in the group based on their physical needs. “Today a guy who had shoulder surgery is helping Ernie.” Dale added that this year Ernie is able to use his right hand on the club. When weather is bad, members play on simulators at the DISC. But starting in April, they play outside: Scovill each Monday; Moweaqua, Hickory Point or Red Tail Run each Wednesday; Eagle Creek in Findley, Meadowview in Mattoon, Lake Shore in Taylorville or Timberlake in Sullivan on “Travelling Thursday.” Travelling is a step toward the future Dale and Joe envision for the program. “We want to introduce the program state-wide. We share information with the golf courses. Hopefully, we will plant the seed, and they can continue.” Dale emphasizes that many “bits and pieces” had to fit together to make the league successful, and it wouldn’t have stood a chance without

the Decatur Park District. Brad Burcham at Moweaqua also offered early support. “I didn’t even finish asking before he said yes,” says Dale. But first and foremost, Ernie deserves credit for the first success that started it all. “Never once in three years,” Dale says, his voice catching, “has Ernie said no.”

Speedway racing season kicks off in April By Colin Patrick Brady If you want to enjoy high-stakes, high-speed dirt track racing, you don’t have to travel any farther than southern Macon County. Since 1946, Macon Speedway has served as central Illinois’ premier go-to racing destination. At 72 years old, the Speedway serves as one of the oldest and most venerable tracks of its kind anywhere in the general vicinity. "I purchased the Speedway from its original owner and founder, William Webb, in 1985," says Bob Sargent, chief operating officer of Track Enterprises. Other partners in management for the track include luminaries and nationallevel racing celebrities like Tony Stewart, Ken Schrader and Kenny Wallace. "The Speedway is a good economic driver for the area; people come from around the nation to the racing performed on the track,” Bob says. The track is unique compared to most others. For one, it’s relatively smaller and a dirt track that is 1/5 of a mile long. So for a six-month period, on any given Saturday evening, people flood to see (and hear) the roar of the engines and watch the racers ply their trade—weather permitting, Bob adds.
