Decatur Pride

The Decatur Pride 12U Baseball team kicked off its 2017 season with a double header against two Springfield-based teams on April 15. The newly formed travel team is scheduled around Central Illinois against teams in Mt. Zion, Bloomington, Springfield and Champaign.

On April 8, St Paul's Lutheran Church hosted a family-friendly Easter fun and egg hunt event, including bounce house jumping, sliding, chalk and bouncy ball making, scratch art creating and egg flipping. Guests hunted over 5000 Easter eggs!

On April 11, Lori Sturgill announced the 2017 Decatur Celebration theme, It's Gettin' Hot in Here" and headlining entertainment including Nelly, Bret Michaels, and Travis Tritt. Officials also announced that the Decatur Celebration will have a fenced perimeter this year, and in order to be admitted to the Celebration, adults and minors over the age of 12 must have a "Band Together" wristband, which costs $5 in advance,or $8 at the gate.

Chamber Business Breakfast

The Greater Decatur Chamber of Commerce hosts a Chamber Business Breakfast at the Decatur Club each month. The April speaker was Gregory W. Baise, the president and CEO of the Illinois Manufacturers' Association (IMA), a statewide advocacy organization representing more than 4,000 member manufacturing companies and supportive industries.

Decatur Legacy Luncheon The Decatur Legacy, a group of financial advisers, institutions and other organizations supporting and encouraging the support of charities in the community, hosted its annual spring luncheon at Millikin's Alumni & Development Center on April 12. Organized by the Community Foundation of Decatur/Macon County, a panel of local professionals provided information to attendees regarding charitable trusts.

Finder's Market The Spring Finder's Market was a success at the new location, the Decatur Conference Center and Hotel. The sun shined bright on the outdoor vendors, but the air was as cool as the unique finds inside. Vintage, repurposed, handmade, antique, boutique, salvage goods coupled with live music, a cash bar and delicious food made for a great day! Catch the next Finder's Market on September 9.

Ropes Course Overlook Adventure Park opened its high ropes course last month. Young and old braved the highs and lows of this multi-level risk-takers' dream. Guests are secured with harnesses and able to test their skills close to the ground before they take to the sky.

Run to Restaurants & More Are you already a runner, want to start running or even walking? Fleet Feet has some upcoming events that are sure to get you moving. If you think it’s just a sporting goods store, think again; Fleet Feet has done everything from fundraisers to raffles and even given away prizes at some events. The staff is always coming up with new, fun ways to get you on your feet! We chatted with Heather Dodson of Fleet Feet to get a feel for some upcoming events. “We do a ton of free fundraising events; we do a Monday night Fun Run every week, and we will offer a Coffee Connection Run once school is out,” she says. With so many events it’s hard to decide which one to attend! Restaurant Runs are just one category of the many events, and guess what? They are FREE. Yes, you heard correctly—a free family-friendly event that is sure to be a good time for everyone. These runs encourage runners to meet at different local restaurants each month not to only promote local businesses but also to have fun getting out and about with family and community!

“We have a shoe rep who will be at each Restaurant Run,” says Heather. “They bring demo shoes that runners can wear if they want, or you can wear your own shoes, and then we will go on a 1- to 3-mile run/walk.” The fun doesn’t stop there; after the run Fleet Feet buys appetizers, and the restaurant offers plenty of dinner and drink specials. Restaurant Runs are held on the third Monday of the month, April through August. This year Fleet Feet is kicking off Restaurant Runs on April 17 at Benny’s Grill. You can see all the events Fleet Feet has coming up by checking its website or looking at its Facebook page. Staff create a page for each event that will include all the information such as how to check in, location and event details. Korean in Cocomero Shhhhh... I have a secret. There is authentic Korean food inside of the Cocomero frozen yogurt shop in Forsyth. No, I'm not kidding. When you walk up to the strip mall, it looks like a regular self-serve yogurt shop. Upon further inspection, you’ll notice a small menu in the corner of the door advertising some of their Korean delights: Bulgogi, Kimbop, Japchae, Udon, Kimchi – all words foreign to most who are used to American fare. But trust me – be brave, go on in and try something new. The interior is bright and clean. Great care has been taken to make the atmosphere familyfriendly and comfortable. Most tables seat 2 or 3. One large table for groups is equipped with games and puzzles to play as you wait for your meal to be prepared. Carry-out is also an option. It can be hard to know where to start, but the owners are warm, kind, and helpful. They have pictures of the food available with brief descriptions. They will likely ask you if you enjoy spicy food. Here is some of the food we tried: Japchae- noodles made from sweet potato starch mixed with veggies, really cool looking black mushrooms, and small bits of pork

throughout. It comes with a side of fruit, but you can ask for a side of Kimchi (homemade fermented spicy cabbage) if you prefer. Udon- a thick noodle soup with fish cakes. Very comforting on a cold or wet day. Kimchi fried rice- spicy kimchi fried with rice and an egg on top. Spicy goodness that is sure to clear your sinuses. For dessert, the owner also makes delicious homemade macaroon cookies in a variety of flavors and colors. Of course, there is also frozen yogurt. Going to Cocomero for Korean food is a delight in every way: a welcoming, clean atmosphere, a delicious food experience that takes you to another land, and hosts who treat you like family. Blaze Your Trail in the Sky

New ropes course ups the fun at Overlook Adventure Take outdoor fun to new heights with a trip to Decatur’s new high ropes adventure course at Overlook Adventure Park. It’s high-flying fun you can’t find anywhere nearby. “There is nothing like this in our area,” says Gabby Cliff, Decatur Park District Recreation Supervisor. “The nearest ropes course is over 150 miles away.” Wearing a full-body safety harness, you’ll climb your way around 33 challenges 25 feet in the air. Walk tightropes, balance on bridges, brave balance beams and fly 68 feet on the zip line. A Tots course gives little ones 48 inches and under nine obstacles to conquer. And don’t worry about being too young—or too old—to have some fun. “The ropes course is available for all ages, as long as you can fit in one of our harnesses,” says Gabby. “If you are less than 48 inches you can still use our bigger course with the assistance of a chaperone.” The course has been a huge hit so far, with more than 415 people testing their mettle on the April 1 opening weekend alone. The fan favorite? Hands down, the zip line, she says: “We typically see kids take 3 or 4 trips across it while they’re on the course.” Payton Schinzler, who scampered fearlessly to the top on the course’s second weekend, couldn’t agree more. “This is awesome!” she says. “I’ve been on one before, but we had to go to Tennessee for that.”

She even managed to challenge her mother, Dayle Schinzler, to a climb. The Girl Scout Troop Leader sees it as a great opportunity for group activities. “I’ll definitely have to get the girls out here,” she says. “I think they’d all love it.” For group activities and parties, Overlook Adventure is becoming quite the destination. And they’re not done yet – this summer’s development plans include batting cages and a playground, and next summer’s target is an aquatic center. Brews ‘n’ Ukes Enjoy some songs and suds in downtown Decatur By Beth DeBouck Having already celebrated its one-year anniversary, Decatur Brew Works (DBW) has quickly become the very chill, go-to pub in Decatur. The first real Decatur brewery in over 100 years, it has its own hand-crafted brews, or you can try any of the 24 rotating draft beers available on tap. If you are a pub lover, you probably noticed how some establishments like to fill the slower weeknights with fun activities for patrons. Open Mic Night may not be on the event list yet, but every other Tuesday, there’s themed trivia (Star Wars, Gilmore Girls, Breaking Bad, etc.). There’s Yoga at the Brewery, too, which takes place once a month and is taught by instructor Chuck Beck. The newest event addition, however, is the Ukulele Jam. Every first Wednesday of the month from 7 to 9 pm, bring your uke to play or simply stop in to listen. All ages are welcome, and it doesn’t matter whether you’re an expert or a beginner. Everyone’s there to share tips, drink beer and have fun! The jams are organized by one of the DBW cofounders, Renee Manring, and her husband, Chris. “It’s almost impossible to play a ukulele and be unhappy,” says Renee. “You can’t play sad music on a ukulele,” adds Chris. “Even if you play sad music, it comes out happy.” Chris, who has a musical background that includes the violin and Norwegian Hardanger fiddle, was inspired by a class-turned-jam at Parkland College in Champaign. “There’s a simplicity about it because there are only four strings,” he says of the uke. “It’s less than two octaves. So, there’s a limit in what you can do, but at the same time, you can do amazing things.”

Chris and Renee began attending other jams in Central Illinois, including one in Normal (normalukejam.com). Discussions of organizing a Decatur-based uke jam started to take place, even prior to the opening of DBW, and the idea finally became a reality in January. “It’s appealing to those who have a strong music background,” says Renee, who picked up how to play on her own and by going to jams. “And yet it’s easy enough for those who don’t.” The DBW jam is free and informal. Two extra ukes are available thanks to Renee and Chris, and many participants bring their own or might provide extras. The most well-attended night counted 19 uke enthusiasts. “It's really low pressure. We take turns leading songs, and folks of all skill levels pitch in,” says Jake Tolbert, who’s attended all jams to date. “There's always words, chords and music to follow along, and if you're not a great singer or player, there's plenty of folks to help you along. The main thing is that it's a group of people who love playing the uke (or who are interested in getting into it)!” Jake’s been playing the ukulele for two years and the banjo and guitar for several years before that. “To be honest, I love playing the ukulele. It’s just a fun, easy instrument (compared to the guitar, for example),” he says, “so when I heard they were getting people together to jam, I thought it’d be a lot of fun – it’s always more fun to play with other people.” If you’d like to receive updates about the Decatur Brew Works’ Ukulele Jam, you can email ukulele.decatur@gmail.com.

By Katie O’Riley More than 100 soccer teams from all over Illinois and the Midwest will gather together for one weekend in May to compete in the MidState Cup Tournament. This year will mark the 8th annual tournament for the Midstate Cup, and it’s expected to bring in 5,000-plus people, as players, coaches, families and friends come to Decatur for a full weekend of competitive soccer! The tournament from May 12-14 will showcase U8-U19 boys’ and girls’ club teams at the Decatur Soccer Complex across from Stephen Decatur Middle School. About 25 different divisions will include players ranging from ages 7 to 19. The MidState organization will have 19 competitive teams entered in the tournament. Each team will play a minimum of three games and have the opportunity to advance to the semi-finals or championship game. Food and merchandise vendors will also have wares to purchase.

On Friday, the action starts! Registration for teams begins, and the whistles will blow as the first round of games will get underway. Games carry on through Saturday and Sunday, and an awards ceremony will wrap up the event. Awards will be presented on stage to 1st and 2nd place teams in each division as well as MVP awards and participation awards to the U8 division. “The community really comes together, and it’s a huge impact on the area businesses,” says Colin Bonner, MidState Director of Coaching. The number of people coming into the area during the weekend is a great benefit to our local economy. Local businesses have the opportunity to sponsor the tournament, which is a great way to advertise and receive excellent coverage during the tournament. Admission to the tournament is free, and it is a great opportunity for sports fans of all ages to enjoy competitive soccer at a variety of levels of play. What makes this tournament unique is that for each game, each coach is given an MVP tag at the beginning of the game. At the end of the game, the coach selects
