THRIVE
Back in the early days of Thrive (OMG, it’s been over eight years) when we were especially eager to hear every little encouraging word, criticism, or new idea from the community so we could figure out if we were on the right track, one insight really stuck with me. We were told that our ads don’t stand out from our editorial content. As in, we are a vibrant, full-color magazine and somehow the article layout design and ad design sort of get all mixed up together visually. If you are reading this, you know who you are *cough* *Chris* *cough*. Really, I have always thought he was pretty spot-on. And I think it’s one of the best parts of Thrive.
What it does mean, though, is that our readers might find themselves finishing up an article and their eye takes them right into reading the ad next to it. I see that as a great thing. To this day I continue to hear feedback from our readers that “I read Thrive from cover to cover including the ads,” and those comments make my heart happy.
Does that mean that every ad looks the same and it’s all one big pot of mush? Nope, we don’t think so! What you find in each issue is a great blend of ads that are created in one of three distinct ways. Some advertisers have in-house designers or hire firms to create their ads and then send us a print-ready file. In many cases, our clients have existing ads or marketing materials that we resize and reformat to fit our ad specs. We have the most fun, though, when we get to create something totally from scratch.
Three adver tising fac ts about the Thrive Entertainment Guide you might not already know:
As the sole ad salesman on team Thrive, I also feel a great responsibility to bring advertisers into the fold who represent awesomeness in our community. I strive to work with outstanding people and businesses working to make our community a better place.
1. Thrive is supported completely by advertising dollars 2. All ad sales, design and layout work is done by yours truly, Kat 3. It is completely FREE to submit your entertainment event to our calendar

Summer Festival? We're All Ears! Ears of corn, of course, for the Warrensburg Corn Festival! The first annual Warrensburg Corn Festival will be held July 27-29 at the corner of N. Main and E. Main in Warrensburg. Local businesses, community leaders and volunteers have come together to host a weekend full of fun, familyfriendly entertainment for the whole community to enjoy this summer. In a town surrounded by cornfields and with Maddox’s Sweet Corn grown locally in Warrensburg, the event name was ever so fitting! By brainstorming ideas, researching other events and tapping into the local talent, the committee has put together a weekend full of activities the whole family can enjoy. Local sponsorships have played a key role in the planning as well. “It’s wonderful to see that people want to support their community this way, and without that, we could not do this event,” says Lacey Phillips, Director of Barclay Library in Warrensburg. With all of the different events going on, it takes a team effort. The event has brought together the community with local churches, clubs and sports teams to volunteer. The festivities will kick off Thursday evening with the carnival, the corn-shucking contest and the Alvin and the Chipmunks concert. On Friday, Main Street will be buzzing with food vendors, the vintage market, the car show, the carnival, live music by Soul Purpose and sweet corn, of course. That evening, Vinnie’s Barbee-Q is hosting a car show, complete with prizes, near the Village Hall.
08 | July 2017
The fun continues Saturday with a 5K run, the parade, a BBQ competition and more fun activities for all ages. 5K participants can preregister online or on the day of the event. And the cream of the crop will compete in the corn hole tournament and the BBQ Showdown. Along with food and beverage vendors, a dunk tank, kiddie tractor pull, pony rides, bicycle rentals, pancake breakfast and other fun activities are sure to entertain. On Saturday evening, the ah-maiz-ing Rock of Ages will perform from 7-11pm. The best part about the Warrensburg Corn Festival? Admission is free! Why should you go (besides the irresistible smell of kettle corn)? “It will be a great family weekend and a great way to get out and have a good time!” says Lacey. It’s also a great opportunity to support the local community. So mark your calendars! You certainly don’t want to be saying, “Oh, shucks, we missed it!” because it’s bound to be a great time!

THE FOOD DUDE
by T. F. DUDE
BBQ Throwdown In the past few years, several new BBQ places have popped up around town. To help me sample two Decatur-based options, I invited Pa Dude to go with me to PT’s Barb-B-Q (corner of S. Franklin and E. Decatur) and Carrol Lou’s Smokehouse (2612 N. Martin Luther King Jr. Dr.). PT’s is small but mighty. You can always smell the smoked meats as you drive past. I went with the No. 1 seller: rib tips ($8). The smoked flavor is what hits you first, and the BBQ sauce was mild and tangy. Pa Dude got a Polish ($3), which he declared to be “tender and juicy.” We also split a giant, fair-sized BBQ turkey leg ($6). What you can’t beat is the price. For the two of us, the rib tips, turkey leg, Polish sausage, two cans of pop, and two sides came to $23. There is no place to sit and eat inside, so PT’s is best as a carry-out option. The staff was incredibly friendly and nudged me in the direction of the tips instead of my “safe” pulled pork sandwich. You can order full slabs of ribs or pans of rib tips or half- or full-pans of chicken, as well. Carrol Lou’s, on the other hand, does have dine-in seating. Just don’t drive past it three or four times like I did. There are more sandwich options here. I got the pulled turkey with Carolina Red BBQ sauce ($5.99), which is a mild,
10 | July 2017
vinegar-based sauce. Three other sauces range from mild to hot. The turkey was tender and juicy, and the sauce was more to my taste than PT’s. (I like more sweet than smoky). The Kaiser roll, however, is supposed to be toasted, but it was soft, so toasting it longer would’ve made it better. Pa Dude ordered a Polish ($4.50), which he enjoyed, but decided he preferred PT’s bun (again, perhaps a toasting thing). In addition, we split fried okra and cheese curds. Batter was good and light, though the portions, for me, were smaller for being $3 and $3.50 respectively. The menu has a large variety, including horseshoes, nachos, brisket, wings, brats, pastrami, ham and tilapia, as well as a lot of sides. Overall, your favorite BBQ is going to come down to your personal preferences and tastes, but both PT’s and Carrol Lou’s are worth checking out this summer when the BBQ craving hits! WILDCARD

Tri to Du the Decatur Lakeside Triathlon Runners… on your mark… get set… GO! On Saturday, July 8, and Sunday, July 9, athletes five and up will compete in the Decatur Lakeside Triathlon—formerly known as the Rodney T. Miller Lakeside Triathlon. The race has a new name, but the course and venue are still the same with only one key difference—a new aquabike option this year. Race Director Gene Mueller exclaims, “I would love to see everyone come out and race it and have some fun!” Saturday, July 8 The Decatur Lakeside Triathlon opens with the Kids Event on Saturday, with the first wave of athletes beginning at 7:30 am. Older children will be competing in the Triathlon, featuring a 250-yard swim, 3.4-mile bike ride and a mile run. Gene says a plethora of lifeguards will be on hand to surround the young swimmers in what he calls a “cocoon.” The Duathlon will begin at 8:30 am for those choosing not to swim. The age category will also determine the length of the mile run and bike ride. Sunday, July 9 The adult portion will begin on Sunday with the same 7:30 am start time as on Saturday. Every participant will start on the same course; however, they’ll run in waves broken down by age group and gender. The triathlon features a 600-yard swim, 15-mile bike ride and 3.1-mile run. The duathlon will consist of a 1.4-mile run, 15-mile bike ride and a 3.1-mile run.
12 | July 2017
Aquabike The Aquabike was added to the Decatur Lakeside Triathlon this year for those who are unable to run due to injuries or knee problems. “I had some people who had knee surgeries and were unable to compete,” says Gene. What he found was a viable USA Triathlon solution for those wanting to participate but unable to do so due to the strenuous amount of running involved—that solution being the aquabike: 600-yard swim and a 15-mile bike ride.

Kids Hit the Links for Decatur’s Summer Junior Golf Tourneys Written by Caroline Colby Photos by Sarah Jane
This summer, children and teenagers from Macon County and beyond will have the opportunity to play in two golf events—the Decatur Junior Golf Open and the City Junior Golf Tournament. Both events are hosted by the Decatur Park District and its golf manager, Kurt “Turtle” Rogers. Before we get into the details on the golf events, we just had to know—where’d you get the nickname Turtle? “When I first started playing golf back in the 1980s, I didn’t play very fast,” he admits. “I don’t play slow now, but I did then!” There’s certainly nothing slow about Turtle’s schedule these days—he oversees Decatur’s three golf hubs, Hickory Point, Scovill and Red Tail Run. A big part of his summer schedule is encouraging kids to put down the iPads and put in some quality time on the links. The Junior Golf Open has been held annually since the mid-1990s and is played at Hickory Point Golf Course. “Back in the 1990s, we had around 400 kids come and play the tournament on three different golf courses,” recalls Turtle. Since then, the U.S. has seen a downturn in the number of golfers. Instead of throwing in the towel on the sport, though, Turtle and his dedicated staff at the Park District have turned lemons into lemonade, and Decatur boasts three beautiful golf courses, including Red Tail Run, which was designed by pro golfer Raymond Floyd.

JUNIOR GOLF FROM PAGE 28 These days, about 75 kids, ages 12 to 21, participate in the Junior Golf Open. “We’re encouraging kids to come out and play by streamlining things—the tournament is held on one golf course, and we’ve lowered the price to $65,” Turtle explains. “It’s affordable, but we still provide a good tournament.” Turtle says the course is challenging but fun. “It’s not too penal,” he laughs. “The kids have a good time.” First, second and third place winners receive trophies, but everyone walks away with something: “We’ve given out golf balls, bag tags and hats,” says Turtle. The Junior Golf Open takes place July 25 and 26 from 8 am to 5 pm, and lunch is provided on both days. The Park District also hosts the City Junior Golf Tournament from August 1 to August 3. “This event is open only to Macon County

residents and Park District junior program participants,” says Turtle. “It’s a chance for the kids to show off the skills they’ve learned and improvements they’ve made over the summer.” The fee is only $20 for the three-day tournament or $10 for Park District Junior season pass holders. This tournament is open to kids as young as 5—although, according to Andy Potts, the golf manager at Hickory Point, the tournament has seen participants as young as 3. “We had a player start at 3 years old, and he’s just phenomenal,” says Andy. “He’s better than some of the 7-year-olds!” You can sign up for both events through the Decatur Park District website. Forms are also available at all three golf courses.

THRIVE Q&A
TED MADDOX
HOW MADDOX SWEET CORN GOT STARTED
Our sweet corn business began in the early 1990s when my mom’s small sweet corn patch was ready to harvest at the same time they were headed out of state on vacation. I asked my mom what she was going to do with her sweet corn. She replied, “Do whatever you want with it.” My wife, Dawne, and I handpicked the corn and loaded it into the back of our little red truck. We hauled the corn to her mother’s front yard in Decatur and made a sign out of a cardboard box and one of our children’s crayons. We sold out that afternoon. Astounded, I looked at Dawne and said, “Honey, I think we’re on to something.”
Nothing says summer like sweet corn – and Maddox Sweet Corn Farm has some of the area’s best! But what is it that makes it so good? And what’s the best way to enjoy it? We went straight to the source and asked Ted Maddox himself!

Our very latest venture: We are now growing hops, which is used in the brewing industry.
