DIARY OF A BIKER CHIC

August 26, 2018 I just got back from a weekend trip in Oxford, Maryland. Dave and I go there every year at this time to celebrate our anniversary of when we first start seeing each other. Usually we go in the car but this weekend was looking really nice. It was going to be in the 80’s all weekend and no chance of rain the entire time! We couldn’t pass up on the opportunity to ride. We had to wait until Dave got off work Friday evening before we could head out and by the time we got rolling, it was already well after 7:00 and the sun was starting to go down on us. I was glad, in a way, because it meant no traffic going over the bay bridge and no hot sun beating down on us! However, it also meant that I would have to wear my clear shield on my helmet and it’s got a big scratch right in the center of it. I made do, though, and actually enjoyed the evening one hour and twenty minute ride. When we hit the bay bridge the air warmed up as we rolled over it and the moon was out even though it was still somewhat bright out. This was the first time I had ridden over the bay bridge with the moon guiding the way. It was actually refreshing and I enjoyed every mile of it. Once we got off the bridge, the temperature dropped back down into the cool department but it wasn’t so cold that we couldn’t bare it. We stopped at a gas station to fill up and it was here that Dave informed me that some dude in a blue car threw a soda bottle at me just before we got to the bridge. I’m not sure why he did it but what I am sure of is that I’m glad I didn’t see it. If I had seen a bottle being thrown at me, I may have very well jumped or jerked and lost control of the bike. Why do people have to be mean to us bikers sometimes?? When we got about 7 miles away from Oxford, we saw signs that there was a DUI checkpoint ahead. I have never had to go through one before so this was another first for me. I was wondering if they’d just let us go on through since we were on motorcycles. They didn’t. They stopped us. As I put my bike in neutral, before I could flip up the visor on my helmet, the officer said to me, “Good evening sir.” I flipped up my visor and said, “It’s ma’am!” He apologized and I told him it was okay, no big deal. I guess I could have been like the chic we saw before the bay bridge. She was riding her own and was wearing short shorts and a bikini top. The dude that was riding in front of her was not wearing a shirt at all. To each their own, I guess, but I choose to have a bit more protection than just my skin. Otherwise, that officer might have realized that I wasn’t a dude. He asked me where I was headed and I told him. He then went to hand me pamphlet. I looked at and took it and then begin looking all around me as if to say, “Where in the hell am I going to put this thing.” He must have realized that handing it to me wasn’t so smart so he asked me if had somewhere that I could stash it. I wanted to be a bit of smart ass and shove it down into the front of my jacket but since I have respect for our men and women in blue, I unzipped my jacket pocket and shoved it in there. After we made our way out of that stop, it was only maybe ten minutes before we reached our bed and breakfast. That was a pretty cold ten minutes as the temperature dropped a bit but I’d still take that over 90 degrees any day. We pulled into the Sandaway’s Suites and Beach a little after 9:00. If you are ever looking for a quiet place 4

to get away to relax and unwind, this is your place! We got our key to our room and got our bikes unloaded. We were hungry as we hadn’t had dinner yet but everything in that area closed at 9:00 so we had to rely on the snacks from the bed and breakfast to hold us over until morning. Yesterday, we decided to go over to St. Michaels to grab some lunch and visit their winery because we love their wine. We decided instead of riding the 25 minutes to get there that it would be fun to take the Oxford-Bellevue Ferry which is right next to our bed and breakfast. For just $6.00 you can put your bike on the ferry and get across the Tred Avon River. It’s about a 20 minute trip, give or take, and then you are only seven miles from St. Michaels. St. Michaels is a cool little town but it was a little tricky being on the bike in that area on such a nice day because there were pedestrians and cars everywhere. Once we maneuvered our way through the crowd and got parked, we stayed on foot for the rest of our visit there. We had a light lunch, bought two bottles of wine, had some ice cream and then got back on the bikes and rode back to Oxford without the help of the ferry. We got back on the bikes later in the evening to take the twenty minute ride over to Easton to eat at our favorite Italian Restaurant, Portofino’s. If you’ve never been there you should go if you like Italian food. You will not be disappointed! Today, we took our time packing up and loading out. We had a late check out of 1:00 but we ended up checking out around noon. We rode our bikes over to a restaurant right there in Oxford called “Capsize.” We had discovered it our first night here when we were trying to find food and thought it would be cool to check it out and grab lunch before heading home. The food was great by the way! We pulled into the parking and were getting ourselves “ungeared” when an old couple pulled in next to us. I noticed the man was looking at us pretty heavily and I thought maybe he was judging us for being on bikes. I whispered to Dave that we were being watched right before the couple started walking towards us. As it turns out, the guy really liked my bike and started asking a bunch of questions. He said he’s always wanted to ride but he was afraid he was too old now. I told him you are never too old and I don’t think his wife liked that! He seemed to like my bike better than Dave’s bike…can you blame him? I told him he should look into getting a trike and Dave suggested that they get a Slingshot. I hope they take our advice and get one or the other! You are never too old! The point of this trip was to have a nice and relaxing weekend away from our busy lives and we accomplished this goal…until it was time to leave today. I was glad the entire weekend that we rode the bikes on our trip but that happiness wore off when we got going down route 50 and got stuck in the weekend traffic trying to get back over the bay bridge. It was about 90 degrees and sunny today and being stuck in stop and go traffic, in full riding gear, to get over the bridge is downright miserable. I think next time we will either leave first thing in the morning (it was well after 1:00 when we pulled out of the restaurant) or not go on the bikes. Maybe one day they will get the traffic situation at the bridge all sorted out but I’m not holding my breath!

TRIUMPH SPECIALS

to accept their credit, so critical parts didn’t arrive, leaving lines of Triumph motorcycles sitting on the factory floor, unfinished. These were desperate times, nothing new for the Brits. It just made them more resourceful.

BY ANDY TALLONE Classic-British-Motorcycles.com

T

BRIEF HISTORY

riumph was riding a wave of success that lasted from the end of World War 2 until about 1970. Owned by industrial giant BSA, Triumph led the high performance motorcycle market through the 1950s and the first half of the 1960s. That’s when the Japanese started building bigger bikes that could actually threaten Britain’s hold on that market. Soon a wave of high-performance motorcycles came pouring out of Japan and the British brands simply couldn’t compete. Just prior to their collapse in 1972, BSA attempted a merger with Norton-Villiers, the only other British brand still standing. It didn’t help BSA, they collapsed anyway. But now Norton owned Triumph, and in a cost-cutting move, they decided to close Triumph’s age-old Meriden factory where all Triumph twins had been built for decades. Norton wanted to consolidate all production under one roof, in this case Norton’s own factory in Donington Park. Triumph’s workers revolted, went on strike, and barricaded themselves in the factory at the dawn of the 1974 model year. It took well over a year to settle the strike, during which time nothing went in our out. In 1975, Norton caved and allowed the Triumph workers for form a worker-owned cooperative that would buy the Triumph brand and the Meriden factory from Norton for a song, and under very favorable terms. However, despite their early enthusiasm and optimism, the Meriden Co-Op, as it was called, was doomed from the start. They were hopelessly under-capitalized and always had trouble securing the financing they needed to achieve anywhere near full production.

MERIDEN CO-OP

Despite the strike, Triumph’s scrappy engineers worked through, without pay in some cases, to convert all Triumphs over from rightfoot shifting (as God intended) to left-foot, as required by new US regulations. They also found time to completely reinvent the 750 Trident triple for the 1975 model year, giving it a whole new look, and finally an electric starter. Unfortunately, it was too little too late. The were no 1976 Tridents. Starting with the 1976 model year, Triumph was down to just one basic model: The Bonneville. It had been punched out from a 650 to a 750 in 1973, and given a 5-speed and a front disk brake, but no electric start. With the switch over to left-foot shifting in 1976, all Bonnies also got a rear disk brake. They had evolved into beautiful, well-crafted, and fairlyrefined motorcycles. Unfortunately, they were hopelessly outclassed by the Japanese bikes, and now BMW too. They struggled along, and as the money slowly dried up they were producing fewer and fewer bikes. They literally had trouble paying suppliers, and others refused 8

1977 T140J Bonneville Silver Jubilee

1977 SILVER JUBILEE

Elizabeth II was crowned Queen of England in 1952. 1977 was the 25th, or Silver Anniversary of her coronation and the entire nation was gearing up for a party. Triumph thought it would be an excellent opportunity to piggyback on the marketing push by producing a special bike commemorating the event. It was to be called the T140LE Bonneville Silver Jubilee Edition, and it was specially decked-out in very regal livery. It started out, as almost all Triumph Specials did, as a stock T140 Bonneville 750. But the Jubilee was given a special Blue-over-Silver paint job with red pin striping and special badging. The stepped ‘king-and-queen’ seat was upholstered in dark blue vinyl with red piping. The color scheme of Red and Blue were meant to pay homage to the British flag, the Union Jack, and the silver of course commemorates the 25th anniversary. All of the external engine covers (primary, timing & gearbox) were chromed, and each bike received a sequentially-numbered Letter of Authenticity. This was purely a cosmetic package, the only real mechanical enhancement was the addition of Girling’s new “UpsideDown Shocks” with exposed springs. This was all meant to honor and also cash in on the Queen’s 25th Silver Jubilee, and Triumph decided to cap production at 1,000 units. But they sold out so quickly that Triumph built another 1,000 just for the US market. When they sold out, they built another 400 for all markets. The first 1,000 bikes had a sticker on the side covers that said “One of a Thousand”. The later bikes say “Limited Edition”. So, this first of the Meriden Co-Ops ‘specials’ was a resounding success. They certainly needed the extra sales, adding up to about 350 bikes per week total, 60% bound for the US market.

My own personal 1979 T140D Bonneville Special Thunder Roads® Mid-Atlantic

1979 BONNEVILLE SPECIAL

Next up was another mild cosmetic redo of the classic T140 Bonneville, but this time that added another mechanical enhancement. The 1979 T140D Bonneville Special, as it was named, featured not only the Jubilee’s upside-down shocks, but also a two-into-one exhaust header. Unfortunately, any potential power gains were more than muted by the new ‘smogger’ cylinder head and Amal Mk II carburetors, designed to reduce emissions. Compression was reduced to just 7.9:1 in an attempt to reduce engine vibration. All 1979 Bonnevilles got the new head and carbs, along with Lucas’s new ‘Rtia’ electronic ignition system. The 1979 and 1980 T140D Bonneville Special was differentiated from run-of-the-mill T140E Bonnevilles by it’s all-black paint paint scheme with gold pin stripes, the 2-into-1 exhaust, and a set of stunning Morris mag wheels. I actually own one (pictured above), and they’re decent bikes to ride. The stepped seat isn’t all that comfy, they don’t have much power, and the smog-era carbs are finicky, both to tune and to ride. The 2-into-1 header sounds like crap, I like the sound of dual pipes much better. But, it was a handsome machine, and it did fairly well in the marketplace at the time, ringing the bell for Triumph yet again. There certainly are a lot of T140D running around today, I see them at auctions and shows all the time.

1982 TSX FACTORY CUSTOM

As Triumph neared the brink, they got a burst of energy. They likely felt that they were one home run away from victory, so they kept swinging. For 1982, Triumph introduced 3 new ‘specials’. First was a highly-customized Bonneville meant to cash in on the ‘choppercraze’. The cruiser-styled TSX got a wild custom paint job and mag wheels. It sold in fairly low numbers, in fact I’ve never seen one.

1982-83 Bonneville TSS 8-Valve

1982 TSS 8-VALVE BONNEVILLE

When Triumph Bonnevilles were still among the world’s premium performance bikes, custom engine builder Westlake Engineering designed a new top end for the ancient vertical twin. It included a new alloy cylinder block topped by a new head that utilized 4 valvesper-cylinder in a pent-roof combustion chamber. In 1982 Triumph contracted to an outside source to cast the modified Westlake 8-valve 1981-83 T140ES Bonneville Executive

1980 BONNEVILLE EXECUTIVE

Things has turned from bad to worse for the Meriden Co-Op. By 1980, they had piled on an additional 2 million pounds of debt (in addition to their original purchase loan). But they soldiered on, building all the bikes they could, or rather, could afford to. By this time, creditors were knocking on their door, and suppliers were refusing to extend credit. Somehow, they kept it going, by shear force of will. 1980 was a very big year in Triumph history because it was the first year an electric starter was made available on a Bonneville. Triumph’s next ‘special’, the T140ES Executive, was meant to be a premium longrang touring bike, yet it could still be ordered with kickstart-only. The electric starter was optional on Triumph’s premium bike. Again, it was essentially a stock 750 Bonneville, with a special paint scheme, a fairing, a top box (aka ‘pizza box’), and panniers (aka: hard saddle bags). Nice bikes, but few were sold.

heads for their new Bonneville TSS. Unfortunately, early pieces were badly cast and were porous, but once they got that worked out, they were excellent bikes. Where a stock T140E Bonneville made about 49 horsepower, the TSS made 58. They could run the quarter-mile in 13 seconds at 102 mph, and street versions topped out at 126 mph. It was a stunning performer. The engine was rubber-mounted to quell engine vibration. It was also a handsome machine, all painted the same way, black with red ‘wings’, and all with mag wheels. I’ve seen several in shows over the years, and actually rode with one in the Quail Ride through the Carmel Valley in CA in 2011 (pictured here).

1982 T140LE ROYAL WEDDING

Prince Charles married Lady Diana Spencer in 1983, and the Royal Wedding turned into a huge media event that lasted months. Once again, Triumph decided to ride on the Royal Family’s coattails with a special commemorative bike. Two bikes, actually. The UK-market version of the T140LE Royal Wedding was, in my humble opinion, the most gorgeous Bonneville ever built. It had a silver frame instead of black, with a chrome tank painted with black wings and gold pin stripes, with a blacked-out engine, headlight and fork sliders, and mag wheels. By this time, all their traditional suppliers had abandoned them for nonpayment, so the tanks, controls and gauges were coming from Italy. The US-market version looked more like a normal Bonneville, with a black frame, polished alloy engine, and a blackpainted tank with gold pin stripes. Both versions came with dual front disk brakes and an electric starter. Both versions are incredibly rare. In all the years I have been going to auctions and shows, I’ve only seen one US version.

1983 MARKS THE END OF THE ROAD

No number of ‘special editions’ could have saved Triumph. Their problems were too great and too complex. Right up to the end, Triumph kept swinging for the fences, building a prototype water-cooled 900cc DOHC twin called the Phoenix. It went nowhere. The Meriden Co-Op slipped into liquidation in the fall of 1983, ending classic Triumph Bonneville production...almost. British billionaire/developer John Bloor bought Triumph out of receivership for a pittance with plans to build modern bikes. But this was still years off, so he licensed the rights to the classic Triumph Bonneville to Les Harris, who continued to build them in England until 1988. By this time Bloor was ready to launch the all-new modern Triumph brand, which took place in 1990. For more like this please visit www.Classic-British-Motorcycles.com

TURN YOUR CARES INTO PRAYERS

M

Y FRIEND, God doesn’t want you to be fearful, fretful or anxious. Instead, He wants you to “be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God.” (Philippians 4:6) So when you have a care or worry, quickly, turn that care or worry into prayer. That is supplication. And when you are troubled by a care or worry that you don’t know how to pray for, pray in the Spirit And in the midst of that prayer, thank God that He is already your healing, provision, good success and victory. That, my friend, is thanksgiving. “Preacher, if I am worried about something, how long should I pray?” Keep on praying. Pray in the Spirit until the worry lifts or dissipates, “and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:7). This was what one of church members did when

12

he found himself anxiously trying to access some important data in his USB flash drive. After a whole day at it with no results, he finally stopped himself from being anxious and instead, turned his worry into prayer, asking the Lord to settle it for him. As he prayed in the Spirit he was also thankfully repeating in his heart that having the Holy Spirit—the Helper— with him was to his advantage (see John 16:7). Later that evening, using his wife’s computer, he succeeded in accessing the data in his flash drive after a few attempts. He quickly backed up the data. It was only when subsequent attempts to use the flash drive on his wife’s computer failed did it suddenly dawn on him that God had “resurrected” his flash drive that one time, just for him to recover his data! Brothers and sisters , I believe that we would all worry a lot less and enjoy our lives a lot more if only we realized this truth: Our Abba Father is so strong that there is nothing He cannot do, and He is so loving that there is nothing He will not do for us!

IN GOD’S TIME While some of you were freezing you bums off and shoveling snow in the northern states in February of 2018, some of us loaded up our motorcycles and spent three weeks riding in 80 degree weather in sunny Florida. Donita and I, who reside in Virginia, along with her brother, Brian, who resides in Pennsylvania, accepted the invitation of a dear friend, Kathy, to enjoy the Florida winter and come stay at her home in North Fort Myers. She opened her heart and her home to us as longtime friends as well to Brian who is a cancer survivor and whom she had never met. In addition to enjoying riding our bikes, we became part of Kathy’s daily life. You see, she was battling a serious health issue and was in dire need of a liver transplant. Not to be deterred, Kathy, accompanied by the mother she helped care for, would often join us in her minivan on some of our motorcycle journeys to the beach, dinner and other places of interest. While this may seem rather mundane to some, at times this was a real difficult endeavor for a gentle lady that never complained. After a week Brian asked Kathy if his girlfriend, Yvonne in Pennsylvania, could join us. Typical Kathy said sure the more the better. Every day was not all sunshine and motorcycles, several days we all pitched in to help Kathy with chores like going grocery shopping, cleaning out the garage, cooking and cleaning, repairing items, washing the van and just sitting together sharing all our lives. As the days rolled by I was blessed to build a wonderful relationship with Kathy’s mom, Suzanne, who reminds me of my dear mother. Donita was blessed to accompany and participate

with Kathy and the medical team addressing her possible liver transplant. One evening when Kathy was having a very difficult time, I, having been trained as a deacon, felt the call to minister to her. I really felt the need to hold her near and to reassure her that God is always in control. During that conversation, she schooled me! At the end of my effort, she told me that she had made her peace and that she was comfortable with whatever God’s plan was for her. When our departure time arrived, we loaded up the motorcycles and made our way home. Shortly after arriving home, Donita and I left for a vacation in Scotland and England. On our last morning in England we received a text from Kathy’s husband Bill informing us that Kathy had just gone to be the Lord. Upon arriving back in Virginia, we made some adjustments and headed back to Florida to share in the celebration on Kathy’s life. We were blessed to share in the eulogy at her service and spend time with her family at the reception. As we were the last to leave the reception, we took time to encourage Bill and offer any help that the family might need. Bill shared with us that at the end, while holding his hand, Kathy exhibited her strong faith in God’s plan as she chose going home rather than a couple of months of artificial life. I do not know about you, but I know that choosing between life and death, without faith in God’s plan, is something I do not want to face. God Bless, Carlus Breland

NCOM BIKER NEWSBYTES Compiled & Edited by Bill Bish, National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM) FEDERAL AGENCY SEEKS ANTI-LOCK BRAKES ON NEW MOTORCYCLES IN THE U.S. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has recommended that all new motorcycles built for road use in the U.S. have anti-lock brakes and electronic stability control as standard equipment. The federal safety agency says that ABS has been required on passenger cars since 2000, and electronic stability control has been required since the 2012 model year, but the technology has lagged for motorcycles and requiring it would save lives. The NTSB voted unanimously 5-0 during their September 11 open board meeting to make the recommendations to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), which has authority to impose regulations. NTSB Chairman Robert Sumwalt said that the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) determined that anti-lock brakes could reduce motorcycle fatalities by 31%. “That is a sizeable safety benefit that the U.S. is leaving on the table, leaving on the pavement, actually,” he told the Associated Press (AP). Eric Emery, the NTSB’s Safety Research Division chief, said antilock brakes would allow riders to use maximum braking force without fear of the wheels locking up and skidding, improving the chances of keeping control of bikes in an emergency. Anti-lock brakes are currently standard on 8.9% of U.S. motorcycles and are optional on 13.3%. Anti-lock brakes were required in Europe starting in 2016 on motorcycles with engines larger than 125 CC, agency officials said. Other countries are discussing or requiring it, including Australia, Japan, China and Brazil. NTSB ISSUES NEW RECOMMENDATIONS TO "IMPROVE MOTORCYCLE SAFETY" Safety issues surrounding the causes of motorcycle crashes, and the prevention of crashes through better integration of motorcycles in crash warning and prevention systems and the use of advanced braking and stability control systems, were the subject of a National Transportation Safety Board meeting conducted Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2018 in Washington, D.C. During the public hearing, staff from the Office of Research and Engineering and the Office of Highway Safety presented findings and recommendations from the "2016 Motorcycle Crash Causation Study" on select risk factors associated with the causes of motorcycle crashes, which were adopted unanimously by the five-member board. Among 10 recommendations included in the report, "Select Risk Factors Associated with Causes of Motorcycle Crashes," are calls for all new on-road motorcycles sold in the United States to be equipped with antilock braking systems and that the federal government establish performance standards for electronic stability control on motorcycles sold in the U.S. 24

Additionally, the report recommends that motorcycles be fully incorporated in the development of technology for onboard crash prevention and vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-toinfrastructure systems. It also calls for further study and strategies regarding alcohol and drug use on rider crash risk, and to evaluate the effectiveness of motorcycle licensing procedures. The NTSB does not typically investigate motorcycle crashes, but it conducted a motorcycle safety forum in 2006 and issued recommendations as a result. It has been more than 10 years since the NTSB has issued new recommendations "to help reduce motorcycle crashes and improve safety." ENDING CARB The Trump Administration has announced plans to revoke a special waiver that currently allows California to regulate vehicle tailpipe emissions differently than what the federal government mandates, which would eliminate California’s more stringent greenhouse gas standards imposed under CARB (California Air Resources Board). CARB’s stricter smog standards have been adopted in thirteen states and the District of Columbia, representing nearly 40% of the nation’s new vehicle sales. SIKH HELMET EXEMPTION GRANTED IN ONTARIO ON RELIGIOUS GROUNDS This winter, Ontario's Ministry of Transportation says Sikh riders will be exempt from the province's mandatory motorcycle helmet law due to the wearing of turbans. The possibility of an exemption has been a contentious topic for years throughout Canada, with some arguing that it would pose a safety risk, but now Premier Doug Ford says he will make the change in recognition of Sikh motorcycle riders' civil rights and religious expression. The change, if it goes forward, will see the province of Ontario fall in line with Alberta, British Columbia and Manitoba, where exemptions are already in place. Helmet exemptions in other provinces have also proven to be controversial, with safety being a sticking point for some. In Alberta, the exemption went into effect April 12, and the insurance industry is taking a wait-and-see approach to the exemption, with insurance providers unsure if the new risks would translate to higher insurance premiums for Albertans. EUROPEAN MOTORCYCLE SALES ON THE RISE As a tariff-burdened American motorcycle industry struggles, the European market boasted a 7.2% growth in nearly all its twowheeled sectors in the first half of this year. In an industry that supports 156,000 employees throughout Europe, it’s good news that the overall two-wheeled sector continues to gain traction. Within the first 6 months of 2018, new motorcycle ownership across Europe increased by almost 42,000 over the same period in 2017-- from 526,889 to 564,851.

Antonio Perlot, Secretary General of the European motorcycle industry association ACEM, said: “Our latest registration figures for the EU show, once again, the importance of two- and threewheeled vehicles as a solution to the mobility needs of people, particularly in large urban areas that suffer from congestion problems." "The latest increase in sales, particularly in the motorcycle segment, is a very positive development. Newer and more environmentally friendly vehicles are being added to the European vehicle fleet, which according to our estimations is now close to 36 million units."

over -- leaning the bike farther, reducing engine torque, applying some rear brake, etc. So why are BMW and other bike firms working on smart, autonomous, self-riding ‘robot bikes’? Because self-driving cars and smart highways are coming -- sooner than you think, and whether we like it or not -- and there’s currently little regard being paid to the needs of motorcycling, and how it will fit into the infrastructure of the future; so if the manufacturers don’t provide an answer to ‘how will bikes become safer and work with other autonomous vehicles’, no-one else will.

SELF-RIDING MOTORCYCLES BEING DEVELOPED BMW Motorrad recently demonstrated a completely autonomous motorcycle at their testing facility in the south of France, when an R-1200 GS independently drove off, accelerated, circled a winding test track and automatically slowed down to a stop, dropping neatly onto its kickstand. BMW says it is "by no means aiming for a completely independent motorbike," but the technology is being developed to further improve safety systems, especially those around riding dynamics - how a bike behaves in certain situations on the road and how it can help the rider in an emergency situation,” according to a Motorrad spokesperson. The autonomous bike is also a testbed for V2V (Vehicle-toVehicle) communication and digital networking. So in the future, when your Smart Bike is plugged into the sensors and networked information sources that will be here soon, it will be able to step in and prevent a much wider range of accidents…with data from a self-driving car in a blind turn ahead of you, your bike will ‘know’ that a possible impact is ahead and warn you to take action. Plus, a very advanced set of safety algorithms may be able to step in when riders make errors of their own -- like panicbraking mid-curve or not leaning over enough to get round a tight corner. If your bike knows exactly where it is, what’s around it, and what it’s doing, it can predict a situation and take

FEMALE BIKERS UNITE IN WORLDWIDE RELAY As the name implies, the Women Riders World Relay aims to unite lady bikers with one aim; passing a baton around the world on two wheels, across even the most remote of locations. WRWR, as it’s now known, was formed at the end of August by Hayley Bell from Warrington, England, in an attempt to wake the motorcycling industry up to the sheer number of female riders on the road. “I want to unite women riders globally, do something that’s never been done before, and to show the industry the force behind the market that is so blindly overlooked,” the 27-year old said. Hayley set up the WRWR Facebook page just weeks ago and has already gathered more than 5,700 members, from as far afield as Pakistan, Bangladesh and South Africa. Australia is by far the most heavily represented country on the page, followed by the U.K. Hayley aims to have got at least 17,000 women bikers on board by December 2018, with a plan to launch the world relay in Spring 2019.

Two biker chicks are laying on the beach in Daytona while on vacation for Biketoberfest, deciding which Club to go to that night. The one younger chick says she heard of a great place where “the men customers are best known for being really good in the sack’. The older chick wisely responds, ‘Yeah, I’ve always found men are like beer; some just go down better than others’. -------------------------------------------------------------A little Louisiana’ boy was sitting on the curb with a gallon of turpentine and shaking it up and watching all the bubbles. A little while later a Priest came along and asked the little boy what he had. The little boy replied, “Dis here is the most powerful liquid in the world, it’s called turpentine.” The Priest said, “Actually, the most powerful liquid in the world is Holy Water. If you take some of this Holy Water and rub it on a pregnant women’s belly, she’ll pass a healthy baby. The little boy replied, “Oh yeah, well, if’n I take some of dis’ here turpentine and rub it on my lil’ brother’s ass, he’ll pass a Harley-Davidson.” -------------------------------------------------------------Five surgeons from big cities are discussing who makes the best patients to operate on. The first surgeon, from New York, says,” I like to see accountants on my operating table because when you open them up, everything inside is numbered.” The second, from Chicago, responds, “Yeah, but you should try electricians! Everything inside them is color coded.” The third surgeon, from Dallas, says, “No, I really think librarians are the best, everything inside them is in alphabetical order.” The fourth surgeon, from Los Angeles chimes in: “You know, I like construction workers. Those guys always understand when you have a few parts left over.” But the fifth surgeon, from Washington, DC, shut them all up when he observed: “You’re all wrong. Politicians are the easiest to operate on. There’s no guts, no heart, no balls, no brains, and no spine. Plus, the head and the ass are interchangeable.” -------------------------------------------------------------Just who was the first person to say, “See that chicken there? I’m gonna eat the next thing that comes outta’ it’s ass.” Thunder Roads® Mid-Atlantic

Two young business men in California were sitting down for a break in their soon-to-be new store in the shopping mall. As yet, the store wasn’t ready, with only a few shelves and display racks set up. One said to the other, “I’ll bet that any minute now some lame-as senior is going to walk by, put his face to the window, and ask what we’re selling.” Sure enough, just a moment later, a curious senior gentleman walked up to the window, looked around intensely and rapped on the glass, then in a loud voice asked, “What are you sellin’ here?” One of the guys yelled sarcastically, “We’re selling ass-holes.” Without missing a single beat, the old timer said, “Sales are good. Only two left.” --------------------------------------------------------------A man was leaving a convenience store when he noticed a most unusual funeral procession approaching the nearby cemetery. A black hearse was followed by a second black hearse about 50 feet behind the first one. Behind the second hearse was a solitary man walking a dog on a leash. Behind him, a short distance back, were about 200 men walking in single file. The man watching couldn’t stand the curiosity. He respectfully approached the man walking the dog and said... “I am so sorry for your loss, and this may be a bad time to disturb you, but I’ve never seen a funeral like this. Whose funeral is it?” “My wife’s.” ‘’What happened to her?” “She yelled at me and my dog attacked and killed her.” He inquired further, “But who is in the second hearse?” “My mother-in-law. She came to help my wife and the dog turned on her and killed her also.” It was a very poignant and touching moment of brotherhood. Silence passed between the two men. The man then asked... “Can I borrow the dog?” The man walking the dog replied, “Get in line.” --------------------------------------------------------------A 12 year old is upstairs walking down the hall to the kitchen when he hears a woman’s scream over and over coming from his parent’s bedroom. He opens the door and sees his parents only with their heads at the bottom of the bed, his Dad on top. His Dad in the throes of passion looks up and sees him, but his only reaction is a big-ass grin and a thumbs up. About a week passes and the Dad is in the kitchen getting a late night snack when he hears all this moaning from the downstairs bedroom. He quietly opens the door to see his son really going hard on Grandma. The son looks up, stares straight into his Dad’s eyes with a big ole’ grin, a thumbs up, and says , “It’s not so damn funny when it’s your Mom is it?”.

BULLET POINTS TH E K I S S R I F L E PHOTOS AND ARTICLE BY: BRODY KENNEN

These days, it seems that keeping things simple is a lost art. With tacticallyoriented training methods at an all-time high for focus; the platforms seen within the classes tells a story of “pay-to-play” being prevalent within a decent part of the community. It may be odd to see that term being used but, there’s enough proof to say that the assessment is correct. Practice is foregone for the “high-speed”, and you must buy into the latest and greatest of weaponmounted equipment to be a part of the “high-speed”. The rifle platform, chosen primarily due to what can be obtained with extreme ease in the United States, will revolve around the 5.56mm caliber. This obviously means the usage of STANAG magazines, steel or otherwise. This leaves a lot of rifle platforms available to choose from. Despite having a lovehate relationship with the platform, the best option boils down to the AR-15. I view the platform as being overly complicated due to the amount of parts that are within the receivers themselves. There are a lot of parts that could fail and send you to an early grave. However, it’s the rifle I would take into the worst of places. If the SHTF tomorrow, there are plenty of parts laying around for a rifle to be repaired or even built up from nothing with. If I was to start a build tomorrow for “the perfect AR”, it would certainly be along the lines of this one. Starting from the top, a 14.5-inch Daniel Defense M4V7LW upper receiver. The muzzle has a pinned and welded Dead Air Silencers flash hider mounted to it: for the minimum overall barrel length as defined by the ATF. The upper lays the base for a Trijicon MRO, on a Geissele Super Precision mount, and a Geissele Mark-8 MLOK Modular Rail system. On the end of the rail is a fixed Daniel Defense front sight and a Surefire X-300 flashlight. This allows for permanent cowitness of the MRO with the front post, while keeping weight off the sides by mounting the light forward of the sight assembly. The lower is a Bravo Company BCM4-series which comes standard with BCM Mod-3 pistol grip mainstream is the latter, with SOCOMs’ decision to run MLOK on all of their and a BCM Mod-0 buttstock. The sling that comes highly recommended is the future rifle platforms, but that means there has been a lot of cheap KeyMod accessories being dumped for MLOK. However, the further down the road Vickers sling from Blue Force Gear. This is a good example of a proper “go-to” rifle platform. For all intent and we go, the less in the way of ancillary and replacement parts are going to be purpose, the rifle is to remain lightweight. The integrated rail should be a available for KeyMod. Simply keep in mind the first rule of building or creating a setup. Keep it slimline choice and an equally minimal style of equipment should be mounted on it. A weapon-mounted light is a must-have for friend-or-foe identification. A simple, stupid. If you want to see extended versions of these articles, then visit www. lot of people are hung up on the use of a laser; but, the fact of the matter is that it is too confusing for most people – who do not practice with their platforms thearmednovelist.com. Questions or comments? Email thisistheline3@gmail.com. on a regular basis. For home-defense, the center of a projected white-light beam will work in the exact same manner should you not be able to bring the rifle up to look down the sights. A modern rifle calls for a modern red-dot optic. It doesn’t have to be an MRO, as there are a lot of options on the market. From the Aimpoint T1/H1 options, at the top, down to the affordable SIG-Sauer ROMEO-4 and -5 red-dot sights. It boils down to what kind of reticle and battery life options, and whether you want night-vision capability on some models. I have my eye on both the MRO, with a ScalarWorks LEAP mount, and the standard SIG ROMEO-4A. I also would mount either one of the Daniel Defense front sight assemblies or a ScalarWorks PEAK fixed front sight assemblies for cowitnessing. If my battery is dead, whether I run a rear BUIS or not, the center of the glass is a general reference for where to put the permanent front post. Ancillary furniture is up to each individual. I’m not partial to the angle of the BCM pistol grip and I may consider a more slim-lined buttstock. The rail integrated system comes in two popular flavors: KeyMod and MLOK.
