INALLY, THE WEATHER is on our side. I for one have been riding as much as possible. Spent some time down at the beach last month for Spring Bikes to the Beach. Got to say for once the weather was good. It has been very bad the past few years. Spent a lot of my time riding around to all the local businesses and enjoying some adult beverages and make some new friends. Living the lifestyle that I do, allows me to meet some awesome people. At the same time, I have met some real assholes as well. At the end of it all, this is my life, and I wouldn’t live it any other way. This month is full of events in the area. Be sure to share your events every Tuesday on our “Tell Us Tuesday!” post through Facebook. We keep you posted with all the latest events and rides in the Mid-Atlantic Area. Get involved! This is your magazine too! If you want to see something, let us know! And don’t be afraid to take some pictures, and write down your stories, and send them to us. I finally was given a Saturday that had no rain and warm temperatures. I love having my weekends off now because I pretty much do what I want without having to worry about getting to a job in the evening time. Although it was going to be 90 degrees today, I knew I wanted to take the bike out. I went back and forth with where I wanted to go. It was either going to be Ocean City, Gettysburg, or Skyline Drive. Gettysburg had a pretty good chance of rain so that was out. I felt it was too hot for Skyline Drive so I knocked that off the list. Ocean City it was. I was also riding solo today. By the time I got out on the road it was already 10:30. It was still cool out at just barely 70 degrees so the first half hour of my trip was actually really nice. I wished it wasn’t going to get any hotter but I knew it would. About 30 minutes into my trip it really started warming up but when I hit the bay bridge, it was feeling nice and chill. I know some people don’t like going over the bay bridge, but I actually really enjoy it! I wish I had my camera’s hooked up on the bike so I could have filmed the ride over but my batteries were dead. Oh well, there will be other times! The ride there was not too thrilling. There’s no back roads the way I go and it’s mainly highway riding. There’s nothing better when you are riding on a really hot day and hit a pocket of cold air. It feels like you are riding through an air conditioner! When I hit Ocean City the temperature dropped down to 72 degrees and it felt so nice. I parked in the inlet parking lot and noticed that they got rid of the toll booth and there was nowhere to grab a ticket. They now have it set up to where you pay at a machine and put the ticket in your car. I got lucky because as I was standing in line to use one of the machines, a couple of girls pulled up in their car and asked if I wanted their ticket because they didn’t use the entire time. It was a ticket for up to 3:30 which was the time I was planning on leaving anyway so I took the ticket and thanked them. I guess there are still some nice people out there! I also noticed that they are putting a Chic-Fil-A on the boardwalk. Everything else was the same old Ocean City. I got me some Thrasher Fries and some Dumser’s ice cream which made the 150 miles there worth it. I sat on a bench for a while and enjoyed the ocean. The ocean is one of my places to go and relieve stress. That combined with the bike made for a great day. I knew I wanted to have the bike parked by 6:00 because there was supposed to be some rain moving in between 6:30 and 7:00, so pulled out of Ocean City a little after 3:00. I filled up and then was on my way. The traffic was much better going home than coming in but it was also much hotter out. I made my first and only stop in Easton and got some cold water and sat down in the air conditioning for a bit. It was here that I realized that my leg was burnt pretty bad due to the hole in my jeans. My hands were also burnt from the opening at the top of my gloves. I really need to start putting on sun block when I’m riding. I was starting to feel a little tired, probably from the heat, and figured I better get on down the road. I got over the bay bridge with no problems. My path after that is IS 97 to route 32. As I was cruising down route 50, a red pick-up truck was driving past me on the left hand side. I looked over and the guy in the passenger seat was an older man well in

his 60s or so. He looked at me, shook his head and gave me a thumbs up. I returned the thumbs up and he shook his head yes as if to say, “Yup, you are right, you know what you are doing.” As I was cruising down the road, I must have ended up in Lala land somewhere because I blew right past IS 97 and didn’t even realize it. I was riding down 50 and was looking for the exit for 32 and realized that I should have already been there. Then I started seeing signs for the beltway and then I saw a sign saying that I was only 7 miles from Washington, DC. I did NOT want to maneuver the bike around in the city so I took the next exit onto Kenilworth Avenue and got myself turned around and back on 50 East. I was almost 20 miles from IS97 so I got way off track! Also, the sky was starting to look a little dark and scary. I was just hoping at that point that I’d get the bike parked before the rain moved in. Missing the exit seemed to be more of a bad idea than I thought because I almost got hit twice while on route 50. The first time, a big pick-up truck in the lane to the left of me, decided to come on over in front of me and came within an inch and a half to hitting my front tire. I didn’t even see him coming so if he had come over just a second sooner, he would have hit me. The second one was a car that decided to come over in front of me but I saw him coming and slammed on my brakes. If I didn’t he would have hit me. The killer with him was that he looked in his rearview mirror at me when he was in front of me and waved at me as if to thank me. I shook my head “no” and he waved again. He then started weaving in and out of traffic while flying down the road. I really wish people would pay attention while driving. Sometimes when I’m on the bike on a highway, I feel more like I’m on a battlefield than riding in traffic.

It was 7:00 by the time I parked the bike and just at that moment, it started drizzling! I can’t tell you how many times that happens to me. I always say that I have someone looking out for me when I’m out on the bike! And by the time I got home, it started pouring rain and thundering and lightening and the winds picked up to 60 mph! I got really lucky! I was drained as I did a total of 344 miles! But it was nice to finally be out on the bike with nothing leaking out of it and enjoying myself. While I do enjoy riding with a few people, there’s something to be said about riding solo. You can stop as often or as little as you want to and go where ever you want. I also find solace when I get out on my own. It’s really good for the soul!

RIDING CLUBS, MOTORCYCLE CLUBS AND JC CLUB Riding club and Motorcycle Club Differences Major Differences Riding motorcycles is the primary purpose of a riding club. It’s mission is to enjoy in the spirit of riding together, with no other commitments or requirements. Riding motorcycles is not really what a motorcycle club is about. It’s more about the social aspects of being together, the brotherhood, creating a family, or creating a framework by which members can find their place in a common goal. Riding motorcycles is just something that members do together. Who Joins and Why? Men and women join riding clubs because they want to find friends to ride with, they want to improve their riding skills by learning from others, they’d like to learn more about group riding, but they don’t want the lifelong commitment to the club. Men and women join motorcycle clubs because they seek a brotherhood/Sisterhood bond with other riders, they want the unconditional support from a family, they want an organizational framework that they can find their place in, they want to be associated with the club’s image and reputation, and they want to make a lifelong commitment to the club. Membership Requirements Some riding clubs require only that the rider submit an application, and pay membership dues, and then they can be considered full fledged members. Yet other riding clubs have some kind of prospect period that allows them to evaluate someone before making them a full fledged member. A few riding clubs acquire members by invitation only. In a motorcycle club (MC), membership normally starts out by “hanging around” a club, such as attending public parties, rides, and events, and getting to know the various members. After awhile, a member that you have gotten to know really well may offer to sponsor you as a prospect. If you become a prospect, you’re then put to a test of will, after which you’ll earn your membership. This test of will varies from club to club, and can be almost no test of will, to an extreme test of will. Patches In a riding club, the back patch is purchased once membership is obtained. In some clubs, the patch can be kept after you’ve left the club. In others, it must be returned to club. In a motorcycle club, the back patch is earned along with membership. Should you get kicked out of the club, the patch is returned to them. Quitting a Club Members of a riding club are free to quit at anytime. There is no lifelong commitment required, though it’s common for some people to remain in a riding club for their whole lives. The riding 6

club is not the most important part of a member’s life. However, some riding clubs do demand that their members place some importance in the club. Motorcycle Club Members are not expected to quit. Joining a motorcycle club is a lifelong commitment. Some clubs don’t allow their members to quit, or else suffer some kind of retribution. All motorcycle clubs demand that their members attend every meeting, and demand that their members participate in all major events. Some motorcycle clubs even demand that their members make the club the most important part of their lives, above their own families, jobs, and religion. JC Club (Jesus Christ Club) Membership is by invitation only. You are first a follower and then a full patch holder when you submit everything and become a disciple. This is an eternal commitment. Jesus said to them, “Come, follow me, and I will make you a different kind of fishermen. You will bring in people, not fish.” Simon and Andrew immediately left their nets and followed him. Jesus continued walking by Lake Galilee. He saw two other brothers, James and John, the sons of Zebedee. They were in a boat with their father Zebedee. They were preparing their nets to catch fish. Jesus told the brothers to come with him. So they immediately left the boat and their father, and they followed Jesus. Brotherhood, Is It just Another Word? The 1972 Norton Commando Production Racer

HE CLASSIC Norton Commando was many things in its brief ten-year lifespan (1968-1977). It was the first production motorcycle to earn the title of ‘superbike’, and at one point it was the world’s quickest and fastest production motorcycle, and it was Norton’s last shot at survival. The Commando was a handsome machine, with an air of quality and prestige. They were fast, torquey, handled great, and most of all they were smooth, at a time when most twins vibrated badly. The Commando was Norton’s biggest financial success, and despite its short life, one of the last classic British motorcycles to fall out of production in 1975, eclipsed only by the evergreen Triumph Bonneville which made it to 1983. The Commando’s performance, handling and great looks have made it a legend among motorcycles, and they’re still very much in demand today among enthusiasts and collectors alike.

THE VERTICAL TWIN IS BORN

The story of the Norton Commando actually begins at Triumph in 1937 with the introduction of their game-changing 500 Speed Twin, designed by Edward Turner. It was the world’s first ‘modern’ vertical twin, and it set the world on fire. At the time, the biggest road bikes were 500 singles that were hard to start, vibrated when pushed hard, and didn’t like to rev. Turner’s idea was to split that 500cc’s up into two parallel cylinders whose pistons rose and fell together, but fired alternately. The 360-degree crankshaft had a large central

flywheel with no center main bearing, they rode on just two main bearings in vertically-split crankcases. This was part of the genius of Turner’s design: the new engine could be produced using the exact same tooling as the single-cylinder engines they were already building. This saved time, money and they were already familiar with it. The 1938 Speed Twin was such a departure from everything else on the market at the time that nearly every other British motorcycle manufacturer was scrambling to produce one of their own.

THE HORSEPOWER RACE IS ON

World War II ended all civilian production in 1940. But when it resumed in 1946, the race was on with Triumph leading the way, and over the next few years BSA, Matchless, AJS, Ariel, Royal Enfield and Norton all developed their own vertical twins. Norton’s first twin was the 500cc Model 7 introduced in 1949. In the early 1950s Norton developed a radical new frame dubbed the “Featherbed Frame” (covered in the January 2018 issue of this column) for their legendary 500cc single-cylinder road racer, the Norton Manx. The 1950s opened with Triumph boring & stroking its 500 out to 650cc, and adding more power almost every year throughout the 1950s. Everyone else lagged behind. In 1953, Norton dropped the Model 7’s 29hp 500 twin engine into the new Featherbed Frame and called the new bike the Dominator 88. In 1956, the same year Triumph introduced their hot new 650 TR6, Norton bored & stroked their own 500 engine out, but only to a 600 (597cc to be exact) now making 34hp, and renamed it the Dominator 99. In 1960, they did it again, boring it out to 650cc, and cranking out 52hp, creating the new Dominator 650SS. While this meant displacement parity with Triumph’s 650s, Triumph had just released the red-hot twin-carb 650 Bonneville in 1959, once again trumping the competition.


THE OLD AND THE NEW

MORE POWER, SCOTTY!

What to do? More displacement, of course. In 1962, that valiant little twin-cylinder engine that started out life as a 500 in 1949, then grew into a 600 and then a 650, was stroked out to 745cc giving birth to yet another new model, the 750 Atlas. The engine, designed in the 1940s to be a 30hp 500 had grown into a snarling 750 spitting out 58hp at 6,800 rpm. The performance of the new bike was stunning and certainly on par with the best that Triumph, BSA and the rest could throw at them. But all that power came at a price: vibration, wicked vibration. To get the power out, these engines had to spin fast, and the faster the spun the worse the vibrations, caused by those two large pistons rising and falling together. Throughout the late 1950s and all through the 1960s, every maker of vertical twins was dealing with the same vexing problem: how to tame the vibrations as more power was being squeezed out, the market demanded more and more power.

PARENT COMPANY COLLAPSES

During this period, Norton was owned by AMC. No, not American Motors. Associated Motor Cycles was a British company that owned several British motorcycle brands including Matchless, AJS, lesser-known Francis-Barnett and James...and Norton. Out of all of them, by the early 60s, production had been whittled down to just Matchless and AJS singles and Norton twins, and only Norton was making money. By 1966 AMC was broke and was bought out of by Dennis Poore of Manganese Bronze Holdings and reformed as Norton-Villiers. All he wanted out of the AMC deal was the new bike Norton had on the drawing board.

Norton had always been an innovative company, adept at coming up with novel solutions to complex problems on an impossiblysmall budget. They needed more power to remain competitive in the marketplace, but to extract that power, they had to find a way to quell the vibrations that were tearing their bikes apart. They didn’t have the money to design a whole new modern engine, which is what they really needed. So, they dropped the same old ancient engine that had powered ever twin-cylinder bike they’d every built, that started out at just 497cc and 29-horsepower, introduced in 1949, into yet another radical new frame and created the next generation of Norton: the 1968 Commando.

WHATMAKESACOMMANDOUNIQUE? The first thing you notice when you walk up to a Norton Commando is that they are gorgeous! Perfectly-proportioned and beautifully-crafted, they come in a wide range of vivid colors and body styles. They’re also big, for a bike of that era, longer than a Bonneville. But what made the Commando truly unique among motorcycles of its day was what Norton called “Isolastic Suspension”. Designed by a Rolls Royce engineer, it mounted the swing arm to the back of the engine, then rubber mounted the engine in a way that isolated the rest of the bike from the engine’s and the rear wheel’s vibration, The weight and bulk of the engine package made a great foundation to mount the swing arm pivot to, done with a set of cast-aluminum plates. Most modern Harley V-twins have a similar rubber-mounted engine and swing-arm system, but at the time it was revolutionary. It smoothed the CONTINUED....


brawny 750 twin out like never before, allowing riders to actually enjoy the horsepower the engine produced at high RPMs. And they handled superbly. Another unique feature of the Commando that sets it apart from every other Norton twin, is the angle of its cylinders. Even though they all use essentially the same engine, all earlier Norton twins have their cylinders oriented vertically, while the Commando’s are slanted forward at a rakish angle. How is this done, and why? All classic Norton engines are of ‘non-unit construction’. This means the crankcase, the primary case, and the gearbox are all separate components that are bolted together in the bike with a set of brackets or plates. So, it was a simple matter to mount the engine to the primary case at the desired angle, modifying the old sump and pickup as needed. As to why they did it, compared with the old-school look of the vertical twins, the angled cylinders looked ‘more modern’, and I have to agree.

RIDING A NORTON COMMANDO TODAY

It’s not that hard to find a nice ride-quality Norton Commando for under $10,000. In fact, there’s a gorgeous 1970 750 Commando Roadster in my free classified ads-page on ClassicBritish-Motorcycles.com for just $7,800. Any Commando that is running properly should be able to run with modern traffic, stop well, handle extremely well, and be pretty comfortable. If you end up with a pre-1975 Commando, you’ll be kick starting it. Personally, I love kick-starting my Triumphs, there’s nothing much to it, if they’re running right. And it’s just plain cool! Way cooler than pushing a little button. On the road, classic Commandos do better on long straights and slow curves than they do in tight twisties, but their handling is tight and solid, and always inspires confidence. The 4-speed gearbox limits top speed, and takes some of the joy out of highspeed cruising, yet Norton owners have been making it work for decades. There is a huge support network for Nortons, including copious parts, service, books, and clubs. Despite being over 40 years old, a Norton Commando still turns heads everywhere it goes.

COMMANDO DEVELOPMENT

In 1973, they got a front disk brake and...wait for it...more displacement! They bored it this time, taking it out to 828cc for what they called the 850 Commando. Not that it was any faster, it wasn’t. In fact, it made the same 58hp it did as a 750. But now it made that power at a lower RPM, which was better on everyone, man and machine. It took until 1975 to get a muchneeded electric starter. During its run, the Commando was built in numerous variants and ‘specials’. All were actually bone-stock Commandos underneath, with interesting appearance packages applied to the surface. The first Commando to debut in 1968 was called the Fastback, and had a cafe racer-style seat with a ducktail rear fender. Then came the Roadster, which is what most people are used to seeing, with conventional seat and rear fender. The Interstate came with a larger 5 gallon tank and bigger seat for long-range touring. The Production Racer looked like a legitimate factory road racer, but it was street legal, and again underneath it was a stock Commando. The John Player Norton or JPN was a red-white-and-blue factor cafe racer commemorating Norton’s racing success with the British cigarette maker as a sponsor. And perhaps the wildest of all was Norton’s crude attempt at a factory chopper, the hideous Commando Hi-Rider, with it’s banana seat, sissy bar and ape-hanger handlebars. In 1972 they hot-rodded the 750 engine with a wild cam and sky-high compression and called it the Combat. It went into production largely untested. When the warranty claims started pouring it, it became obvious that the engine was in combat with itself. They were grenades. The debacle cost Norton millions and much lost reputation. All Nortons are 4-speeds, and shift 1-up, 3-down, the opposite of most bikes. Most Nortons shift on the right, as God intended, but the 1975-and-later model shifts on the left.

THE MODERN NORTON COMMANDO

The last classic Commando was titled as a 1977 model, but Norton remained solvent, delving into air-cooled twin-rotor Wankel-powered bikes in the 1980s. That didn’t go well. In the 1990s, Kenny Dreer secured the rights and designed the new Norton Commando 961, producing them in small numbers in Oregon. They were practically hand-built and trickled out until 2006 when UK businessman Stuart Garner bought the brand. He built a brand-new high-tech factory in Donington Park, England and is producing new 961 Commandos at a rate of around 500-1,000 per year. While totally modern, the new bike is instantly recognizable as a Norton Commando.

at work needed my gloves more than I did this day. I did manage to grab the dealer tag though. Along the way on a back road, we slowed down to enter a right corner. A pickup truck heading towards us, completely busted the double yellow line with all four tires. I reached for the high beams as I looked for a spot to bail. At the last moment, the driver jerked the wheel to the right just in time to catch a brief glimpse of my middle finger. The adrenaline dump was severe. And we were the tail bike. We were all hungry. We’d had enough of following an exotic car in first gear with Florida plates, on an empty stomach. The farts and barnyard animal sounds on my apps had run their course through the isles. Even the letter “T”, in the craft department, sophomorically placed upside down over a certain area, lacked the luster, one would ordinarily find hilarious on a full stomach. It was time to go. The gloves were a hit. At 10 bucks, they were a mechanic’s dream. We all rolled the dice, and opted to forgo the local dining establishments this Sunday, in favor of one about 20 miles away, that we weren’t sure was open. We weren’t disappointed. I have ridden past the Lost River Grill many times. Today, there were some bikes in the parking lot, as if some kind of formal invitation was being sent. The place was super clean and nicely decorated. The staff was warm and friendly, and the food was good and fairly priced. Rose especially liked the ice cold beer. It turned out to be just what we were looking for and the ride on Rt. 259 is always a treat. We set up the Pod of All Triness at Kimsey Lake before head-

ing back. The four of us were the only ones without a fishing pole. The horse and buggies were all tucked away, heading to Ramsey Pike through Singers Glen. Like going from a kick-ass ACDC song to something from the Starland Vocal Band, our buzz-kill was a, circa 1980s, Dodge van crawling up the world renowned pass. We managed to wear a little bit of shoulder off the tires after John Force eventually pulled over and let us by. We parked at another strategically placed gift shop in Brandywine. We’ve been there many times before, but it’s always fun to see if they have any new Harley stuff. The four of us said our goodbyes on yet another day that ended way too soon. Rose and I intimately shared the next 28 miles on one of our favorite roads through Sugar Grove. It’s nothing but farms and homesteads, and the occasional country store. In similar perfection, Rose and I were together again, coexisting on a two wheeled machine, on a road all to ourselves. From a few months ago, it looked like this day would never come. We’ve missed “The Lifestyle”, where the sacred closet loses some of its items repeatedly, for long periods of time. The helmets and gloves, jackets and boots, when donned in motion, have always been a natural and euphoric state of existence for many. I can attest, the opposite is also true. So here’s to the gear, being with friends, your Pillion, Co-Pilot and Love, on a bike with the throttle twisted!!! Cheers and thanks for reading! I

picked up this 1974 CB550 four back in 2014 wanting to build a Café-Brat style bike. Money got tight soon after and I ended up selling it to a good friend. Fast forward to summer of 2016 it was offered back to me and once again it came home. Being a Pinstripe and Kustom kulture artist I spend majority of my time traveling to car-bike events or working on artwork for bike builders. Nov 2017 my good friend Adam Karns of Karns Kustoms and I were talking and decided since I was already attending bike shows as a pinstripe artist I should just build my Honda and bring it with me. So we began breaking it down. Through the month of December, we worked on the frame. Sandblasted to bare metal added the rear seat hoop and welding in the side panels. By the beginning of the new year and countless hours of sanding and filling sanding and filling the frame was ready for color. The month of January was spent gathering parts and pieces to complete the build. After a trip to The Chicago International Motorcycle show in the beginning of January Adam and Rob from Irons Customs and myself set a goal to take the Honda from Primered frame to finished bike in less than 3 weeks to debut at the Washington DC International Motorcycle show. The Swing arm was stretched 5.5” and shock mounts relocated, front forks chopped 2.5”. Off to paint everything was sprayed Hotrod gloss baby blue or satin black. The motor was broke down rebuilt and also sprayed satin black. Also, a stainless 4-1 exhaust was added. As we reassembled my brother Yancy Wharton offered to 3D print some of the parts velocity stacks, handle bar block off, bolt covers and under seat wiring box were designed. New Emgo faring was added along with clip on handle bars and biltwell grips, headlight has turn signals built in and rear LED strip under the seat handles running, breaks and turn signals. Wiring was redone completely in shop by John Dunning . As a cool touch I added a skateboard rack build by Kick Start garage. The morning of the Washington DC show it was finally all assembled and I put the final hand painted touches on the bike at 2am Pinstriping, tank logos and side numbers. The Honda showed extremely well and won 1st in the retro class and qualified for finals in Chicago later this year.

NCOM CONVENTION MOBILIZES BIKERS RIGHTS ACTIVISTS IN MOBILE The National Coalition of Motorcyclists was founded over three decades ago during the turbulent formation of the bikers’ rights movement to foster unity among diverse segments of the motorcycling community in order to advance a more cohesive political agenda. Unity and cooperation were the buzzwords at this year’s 33rd annual NCOM Convention in Mobile, Alabama as hundreds of representatives from Motorcyclists Rights Organizations (MROs), clubs and associations from across the country came to listen, learn and share information on a variety of issues important to today’s riders. “While not the largest attendance at an NCOM Convention, those who were there had a good time and the Convention was a success,” notes Convention Committee Chairman David “Animal” Reid, who says “Attendees at the various seminars and presentations were attentive, asked pertinent questions and left with current information on a wide range of subjects and issues.” Among the many meetings, seminars and breakout sessions conducted throughout Mother’s Day Weekend, May 10-13, 2018 at the Renaissance – Riverview Plaza Hotel, were seminars on civil rights, profiling, RICO, veterans affairs, motorcycle insurance, and featured a Mock Legislative Session presented by the NCOM Legislative Task Force. “The Mock Committee Hearing went over very well,” says NCOM-LTF Chairman Frank Ernst, adding that “Those in attendance gave our committee much positive feedback and they appreciated the information provided by the LTF,” including a new “Biker’s Guide to Making Law” free informational brochure on how to impact the legislative process. Spreading some good news finally, after more than three years in litigation, A.I.M. Attorney Bill Smith of Texas gave an update on the deadly Waco shootings and reported that most of the nearly two hundred bikers arrested and charged under RICO with murder have now had their cases dismissed, including longtime bikers rights activist Paul Landers, former NCOM-LTF Chairman who had to resign due to the miscarriage of justice that cost many innocent 26

TWIN PEAKS CASES UNRAVEL Three years ago on May 17, 2015, the bodies of nine dead bikers lay in the parking lot of the Twin Peaks restaurant in the infamous Waco shootout as the District Attorney had police round up and arrest everyone there to attend a Confederation of Clubs meeting. Many of the nearly two hundred bikers arrested that night would spend the next several weeks jailed on million-dollar bonds. It was a risky legal strategy, one that had never been tried on this scale: Throw a wide net around a complicated crime scene and charge everybody involved with engaging in organized criminal activity. Now, with the 3rd anniversary of the cases upon us, the failure of that audacious strategy has become clear as prosecutors dismiss most of the cases, the district attorney lost re-election by a landslide, and 130 bikers line up to sue over civil rights violations. The only case that has gone to trial ended in a hung jury and mistrial in November. “In the last three years, the 192 bikers arrested in the Twin Peaks shootout have lived under a cloud,” reports the Waco Tribune. “Some have languished in jail, lost jobs, lost vehicles or lost spouses. In some cases, ex-wives used their arrests to seek modifications in child custody or visitation orders. Most were under strict bond conditions that restricted their travel and freedom to associate with their friends.” The Twin Peaks debacle may also have ended a promising political ca-

reer for D.A. Abel Reyna, who suffered an overwhelming defeat in the March primary in which his opponent accused him of corruption and prosecutorial overreach. Since the electoral loss, Reyna’s office has dismissed 124 cases en masse, and has re-indicted 24 remaining defendants on a variety of charges including riot, murder and tampering with evidence, superseding the original organized crime charges. “Meanwhile, the raft of civil lawsuits stemming from the Twin Peaks cases leaves the city and county in potential financial jeopardy,” according to the Waco newspaper, noting that the massive volume of cases had put a severe strain on court operations and on county resources already. CALIFORNIA MOTORCYCLE CLUB CLAIMS PROFILING AND POLICE HARASSMENT A video posted recently on YouTube shows members of the Jus Brothers Motorcycle Club “doing nothing wrong” when a Sonora, CA police sergeant started harassing them and photographed the license plates on their parked motorcycles. “They say police unlawfully profiled the club members as a motorcycle gang,” reported the Modesto Bee newspaper.

Previously, the club expressed disagreement with what they considered discrimination against bikers by targeting Headingley Sport Ltd./Indian Motorcycle Winnipeg for forbidding colors from a riding event. “Once the shop withdrew from the event, the perpetrators were asked to modify their ratings, which they did.” A ROAD TO ZERO MOTORCYCLES A recently released National Safety Council report entitled “A Road to Zero” is the federal government’s vision for achieving zero roadway deaths by 2050, but it fails to identify any significant procedures to reduce motorcycle fatalities except for helmet laws and hi-tech.

Despite input from motorcycle organizations, the NSC relies heavily on automotive technologies such as driver assistance systems and autonomous vehicles to pave the way to a safer future, ignoring such rider safety issues as motorcycle awareness, rider training, impairment, distracted driving and proactive measures to prevent car-versus-motorcycle collisions.

“We get this kind of hassle from Sonora PD all the time,” a member told The Bee. “I think they’re just trying to keep us out of downtown. They come around taking pictures of our bikes, nitpicking to see what they can find.”

The report also endorses using insurance to price some high risk operators and vehicles off the road, opening the door to allow insurance companies to effectively achieve zero motorcycles.

Club members in the video (www.youtube.com/watch?v=pZN4fDjL17M) tell the sergeant that they plan on posting the video online with the department’s phone number, so callers can tell officials what they think of it: “That way America can see what it’s like to live in a police state!” Another Jus Brothers member in the video asks the sergeant if police will do the same to the other vehicles parked along the street, and the sergeant seems to indicate they’re only doing this to “outlaw motorcycle gangs.” The Sonora Police Department has responded to the allegations of profiling local bikers; “The police sergeant in the video was simply engaging in intelligence gathering on a public street,” according to the official police news release. In the video, the Jus Brothers members tell the police sergeant about Assembly Bill 2972, a bill to prohibit peace officers from engaging in “motorcycle profiling.” If passed, police would not be allowed to consider a person riding a motorcycle or wearing motorcycle or motorcycle club-related clothing as a factor in enforcement decisions. MOTORCYCLE CLUB RETALIATES WITH CYBER ATTACK Management at Marion Hotel in Winnipeg, Manitoba received a harsh dose of virtual reality as they suffered the wrath of the Manitoba Nomads, a chapter of the Hells Angels Motorcycle Club. According to a news posting on www.rideapart.com, “It all started when members of the Nomads were refused access to the hotel for sporting their colors.” Unwilling to let the offense go unpunished, Thunder Roads® Mid-Atlantic

Every manufacturer of motorcycles was there, as CARB talked about embracing all aspects of the market before making their recommendations in 2020…that’s the good news. “They discussed anti-tampering, competition with the EU and Zero emissions,” writes Bandit. “They talked about moving California to zero emissions by rebates on electric bikes, and they want California riders to be riding 5 million electric bikes by 2025 by executive order from the nice California Governor.” Bandit et al go on to state their case: “Two points: One is that word Zero again. They use that word in two other regulatory segments, Zero deaths on the highways and Zero tolerance when it comes to drunk driving or drugs. Zero sounds good from one side of the coin, but the other is ultimate control or Zero Freedom. The other point I hope to make is that motorcycles represent such a small number in the emissions mix we should be left alone. here are some motorcycle events and rides centered around contests or charities. There are others where the entertainment, stunts or racing is the draw to pull in the crowds. Then there’s the Men & Women Who Love 2 Ride Motorcycles event held in Ocean City, MD. As the names states, this one is simply about what we love to do, get out and ride while enjoying the fellowship with others that share the same love. In a male dominated industry, this events makes it clear up front this is for all to enjoy, male and female from all walks of life, independent or in an MC. This gallery and recap is only a glimpse into the camaraderie of brother and sisterhood shared throughout the weekend of activities that included a Meet-n-Greet, Bike Blessing from Pastor Rodney Barnes and Guardian Bell Exchange along with a Saturday morning group ride. Saturday also featured a Day Party in support of raising awareness of breast and prostate cancer and of course there was the after-party.

I’d be hard-pressed to name an event where the hugs, bro-hugs, smiles, laughs and jokes were so abundant. The Day Party featured an audio sound contest hosted by one of the industry top-shops Bagger Boyz Motorcycle Design Center with Owner Anderson Morgan along with a guest appearance and support by the white-hot Sound Off Series’ C.E.O. Rickie Will. On the inside, the Byke Junkyez crew held it down with live interviews from respected members and leaders of the community such a Ruthless Riderz’ MC Founder Wild Bill and many more. Now in its fourth year, the event has quickly grown from a modest count of approximately 150 Riders to this year’s estimated 700+ participants from VA, MD, NY, NJ, DE, Philly, NC and as far away as Michigan with no signs of slowing this movement down. To the contrary, event Founder Ellis Dawson aka Ezy announced they’re about to kick into high gear with making some changes for next year to accommodate more Riders, better weather and continuous event improvement. Whether you’re down for the full weekend or a Turnand-Burn like so many of us did, this is one to add to your list.
