HO’S READY for OC Bikeweek? This guy that’s who… I know that most will say that the whole thing is over run with cops and the city residents don’t want us there… blah, blah, blah. Well I say screw that! I enjoy going down and parting with my friends. It has always been a great time for me, and I don’t expect this year to be any different.

With all the great entertainment coming in for the always top-notch OC Bikefest event and the after parties. Of course, let’s not forget the before parties for those that can hang. Speaking of hanging. I will be hanging down at the inlet this year, and the GOT Girls will be hosting some shows Friday at Dead Freddies and Saturday at de Lazy Lizard. Shows will start around 10pm each night. If you can’t catch them there they will washing bikes at Dead Freddies and Hooper’s Crab House Friday and Saturday from Noon to 4pm. Be sure to swing by and say Hi. Never know we may just have some free stuff.

This month is also full of events in the Mid-Atlantic area. Be sure to share your events every Tuesday on our “Tell Us Tuesday!” post through Facebook. We keep you posted with all the latest events and rides in the MidAtlantic Area.

Get involved! This is your magazine too! If you want to see something, let us know! And don’t be afraid to take some pictures, and write down your stories, and send them to us. You never know, it might end up in the magazine! We are always looking for a good story, or a new road, or a helpful tip on new parts or just routine maintenance on the bike. DIARY OF A BIKER CHIC July 15, 2018

attention. I usually am okay with it as most of the attention I attract is usually pretty cool towards me but every once in a while, I run into someone who gives me the willies and he was one of them. I did walk by him when Lita Ford was playing. He was standing in an area that I was going to stand but when I saw him, I quickly walked to the other side of the stage. I never saw him again after that. I guess I didn’t have my “resting bitch face” on because I attracted attention again later on that day.

nother Gettysburg Bike Week is done and tucked away into the memories of my mind. I almost didn’t go since Dave was not able to get the weekend off of work but I had already bought passes into the Allstar Complex and I was pretty sure there was no way to get a refund.

Besides, I really wanted to see Lita Ford on Friday night and Jackyl on Saturday night. So instead of going up on Thursday, I went up on Friday and I changed my reservations to the Quality Inn instead of The Farnsworth. It was a little bit cheaper and The Farnsworth is a “me and Dave” place so I didn’t feel right being there without him.

I pulled out Friday afternoon around 2:00 and the ride to Gettysburg goes so quickly that if you blink, you may miss the entire ride…to me at least. It was a pleasant ride and the weather was really nice. It was a tad bit hot but not too bad as long as I was moving. I had no problems with the cagers and enjoyed the quick trip. I stopped at the Royal Farms that’s about 10 minutes from town to get a bottle of cold water. I was standing by my bike enjoying the water when a car slowly pulled up next to me. It startled me a little bit at first because it almost looked as if he were trying to sneak up on me. The guy driving the car looked to be in his late 40’s or so and said to me, “I was just looking at your bike. What kind is it?” I told him and he then tells me that he used to have a Victory 8-ball but he had to stop riding due to a head injury. I told him I was sorry to hear that but I was wondering why in the hell he would tell a stranger this. He asked me if I was going to Gettysburg and this is where I always feel a little weird when asked a question like that.

It was so very clear that I was by myself so if I tell this guy, “yes, I’m heading to Gettysburg,” he may try to find me up there and do who knows what. However, if I tell him I’m not going to Gettysburg and he sees me there, then he may approach me. I did get some weird vibes from him. Being the type of chic who has bigger balls than most guys I’ve met, I told him I was in fact heading up to Gettysburg. Before he could say anything, I said, “There’s going to be some good bands playing there this weekend.” He mumbled something about the fact that Five Finger Death Punch wouldn’t be playing so it couldn’t be that good. I like Five Finger Death Punch but I didn’t want to tell him that. I said, “No but Lita Ford is playing tonight and Jackyl is playing tomorrow night.” His response was, “Lita Ford? I haven’t heard that name in a really long time.” I laughed to myself because, although Lita Ford is old and has been around for years, she’s been touring regularly.

He said he was headed up to Gettysburg himself and I thought for sure he was going to ask me to meet him up there. I told him cool and he finally said he was going to go. Phew!

I guess when you are a chic on a motorcycle by yourself, you attract 4

I got checked into the room and it was a nice room. It actually had three beds which I had never seen before. It was also kind of funny since I was there alone. I couldn’t get anyone to come hang with me.

After I relaxed for a bit, I decided to ride over to the Walmart to pick up a few things. When I got back, there were a bunch of guys hanging outside in the parking lot. When I parked the bike and got off of it, the group of guys (who were behind me) starting clapping and yelling “YAAAAY!” I had no idea if I was the cause of their behavior so I looked up at them. They all were looking right at me. So I did the only thing I could think of doing. I bowed and said, “Thank you, thank you.” This resulted in a roar of laughter from the dudes. As I was walking to my room I was trying to figure out what it was all about. Were they just picking on me because I was a chic riding…alone? I thought that must be it until I heard them doing it a few more times throughout the evening. They were doing it to every biker that pulled in there. They were just having a good time and that was A-Okay!

Lita Ford put on a great show. She still kills it live and if you ever get a chance to go see her, you should definitely do it! She alone made it worth it for me to be in Gettysburg for bike week by myself. When I walked out to my bike after the show, it was sitting there all by itself in the dark. All the other bikes that were around it had left already. I had to snap a few pictures because in the night sky and it sitting in some pretty tall grass, it looked really awesome! It had been a long time since I’ve ridden at night time so I really enjoyed the quick ride from the Allstar Complex back to my room. The temperature was just right and it was a nice clear night. I wanted to ride around for a while but I had a killer headache. Too bad the headache was not going to get any relief. My room was right above the bar that is there, The Reliance Mine Saloon. I think they had karaoke going on Friday night because I heard all kinds of weird songs being played down there. The weirdest, though, was “if you’re happy and you know it…” Where in the hell was I? I felt like I rode into another world. Why would a bunch of bikers be singing that song? What in the heck did I miss??

When I got up on Saturday (not that I really got any sleep) my head was killing me. I took some Advil and got some food. I then took off on the bike for a while. I ended up finally hitting 11,000 miles on the bike during this outing! That’s pretty low considering I’ve had the bike for 4 years now but I’m still happy at hitting 11,000! That’s 11,000 that I did all on my own! A couple of friends from work came up for the day so I spent the majority of the day hanging out with them and walking around in the heat. I didn’t really enjoy the heat all that much. I also got to say hi to my friends Andy and Rhonda for bit who had rode up to Gettysburg from their home in Delaware!

I departed from my friends a little after 4:00 so I could ride in the Parade of Chrome. I did it last year for the first time and thought it

was pretty neat. When I got in line I only had to wait 15 minutes for the ride to start. I have to say that there was many more people this year than last year and I didn’t really enjoy riding in the parade this year. It was so much stop and go and slow down and speed up that it was more annoying than anything. I couldn’t wait for it to be over! My friend did get a cool picture of me riding in it though!

Jackyl played Saturday night and I love Jackyl but he talked and told jokes more than he played music and with my headache creeping back up on me, it was kind of annoying. He did put on a good show, though! I also was stressing out because Dave decided to ride up after he got off work but he didn’t head out until 8:30. He’s a bit of a newbie rider and I was not thrilled about him riding alone at night, especially since he didn’t really know the way there and had to memorize the directions. Luckily, he made it to the hotel just as Jackyl finished playing, so I met him at the hotel. I have to admit that it was nice to see my bike have some company and not be so lonely after he got there! We got some late night grub and I ran into one of the guys who works at the same agency as me so that was cool.

When we got up on Sunday, we were going to hang out in Gettysburg for a little while before heading home. Unfortunately, as we were getting things packed up in the room, we realized it didn’t look too good outside. The weather showed rain later in the day so we thought we’d be okay. We realized it was starting to drizzle so we decided to pack up and head out. I actually put on my rain jacket, which I haven’t worn in forever! The first 25-30 minutes of our ride home was us riding in rain. The rain was light so it wasn’t too bad. It was bearable and part of me actually enjoyed it. We got lucky that it wasn’t down pouring or storming out. About halfway home, we stopped at a gas station off of route 32 to fill up and grab a bite to eat. As we were standing by our bikes eating, an older man who was driving a pick-up truck approached us and asked us if we were headed to Gettysburg.

We told him we just left there. He said that he would have liked to have gone but he can’t ride his bike right now. We asked him why and he told us that he’s currently battling cancer and he can’t really feel his feet.

He felt that riding wouldn’t be very smart. We felt bad for him but told him he looked good (which he did) and to keep fighting. It occurred to me that the conversation would have never happened if it weren’t for motorcycles. We would have pumped our gas and went on our merry little way, having no idea that the man next to us was fighting cancer.

The biker community is pretty great!

The rest of the ride home was uneventful…for me. After I got my bike parked, I was following Dave so he could park his bike. I lost him on the way and I didn’t know where I was going so I went on home. He called me once he got parked and told me he got stuck in a downpour of rain. I’m glad I lost him because if I was riding behind him in heavy rain, I would have been freaking out and worried about him.

He made it safely and now he has some experience riding in heavy rain.

I have to say that it was a hot weekend and my tolerance for the heat isn’t what it used to be, but I did enjoy the weekend even though I was alone for parts of it. I love Gettysburg and I love that they have their own little bike festival every year. It’s the only one I really attend anymore.

Gettysburg is also a place I go to frequently so when I can combine Gettysburg with bikes, it just makes it that much more special!

CRUCIFYING RACISM But they kept shouting, “Crucify him! Crucify him!”

(Luke 23:21)

T

HIS MONTHS message is not one of political correctness, or even one of encouragement... instead today we need to take a serious look at our own views, and how we perceive others. While racism is not something we like to talk about, or even think about, it is something that we can ALL fall victim to... regardless of the color of our skin... we all can find ourselves falling to irrational stereotypes or our fears of those things that appear to be different.

What becomes even more dangerous than allowing ourselves to fall victim to these irrational feelings however, is when we try to justify them... when we try to tell ourselves we are right for feeling anger or hatred towards another person simply because of their affiliation with a group, if only by race.

One of my favorite subjects is history, and so this month I would like to look back on the facts. I would like to look back and remember the unjust abuse, the physical abuse such as beatings and whippings along with the psychological abuse and humiliation. I would like to look back and remember the abuse we caused, beating to near death... ripping and tearing skin away with each strike of a whip. How we unfairly persecuted, jailed, and even killed the most innocent out of our own prejudice.

I would like to look back, and remember how we nailed this man to the cross, nearly 2000 years ago. How we took God’s only son, and mocked Him as we pierced His side or burrowed His head with the crown of thorns... as we cursed Him while ripping the hairs from His beard.

Jesus suffered one of the most inhumane and most merciless punishments of all time for our sin... an innocent man who did nothing wrong except to teach us about God’s love. And yet, despite doing all of this, Christ left us with a message of forgiveness. Despite doing this to God, He gave us eternal life with Him. While nailed to the cross, Christ called for our forgiveness.

Today think about how you feel about others, and why you feel that way. Do not limit yourself to race, but think about those who have persecuted you, hurt you... and ask yourself if Christ has forgiven us, should we also forgive them? Should we put aside our pain and anger, to live with the joy and peace of our Lord Jesus Christ?

And above all, we must remember that Christ died for the forgiveness of all, and in Christ there is not race, social status, gender, etc... we are all of one body, one that we are all guilty of betraying. (Galatians 3:28) “And whenever you stand praying, if you have anything against anyone, forgive him, that your Father in heaven may also forgive you your trespasses. But if you do not forgive, neither will your Father in heaven forgive your trespasses.”

BLACK BIRD ROAD CAPTAIN’S REPORT

I

’VE OFTEN SAID, “Projects beget projects.” Perhaps some of you can relate; especially if you’re like me and have the Tim The Tool-Man Taylor gene, and can’t get through a repair or build without an additional trip to the auto parts or hardware store. Rides can have the same effect, but in a good way. While on last month’s ride with John Edmunds and crew, Rose and I couldn’t help but feel intrigued when we heard about the Skyline Lodge in WV. Like the old E. F. Hutton commercials, we watched on Sundays as kids, we were all ears.

The squeeze was on as we bisected two foothills on one of our favorite roads: Rt. 84. I had awoken earlier to the smell of bacon and found Rose in the kitchen donning her new Thunder Roads T shirt. One of my favorite machines, Black Bird, provided by Shenandoah Harley Davidson, selling the coolest products on earth, was also anxiously awaiting her crew for a rare chance to ride together on a dry day off.

Rush’s “Camera Eye” and Van Halen’s “Mean Streets” shuffled back-to-back. There’s somewhat of a transformation when motion and balance are shared. Like a long-awaited visit from a loved one, together again. The music seems to enhance the connection: like we’re not just watching the movie but staring in it. Over the course of a lifetime of leading roles, there are few other awards issued as

“Best Motion Picture”, then that of a motorcycle.

We arrived in White Sulfur Springs for a plumbing stop. Our flick was going extraordinarily well. We had the roads mostly to ourselves and we couldn’t ask for a more perfect day. We had passed a pipeline staging area near Minihaha Springs complete with dozens of backhoes on tracks. The Emmy, however, thus far, for best scene in an action movie, had to have been the chase up Jack Mountain, earlier, by the world’s fastest Prius. I can’t imagine anyone driving a hybrid, ever having that much fun.

I could hear the director in my head yelling “CUT!” as we arrived in Lewisburg, just in time for the state fair. I was just following the GPS and hadn’t studied the route in particular, so I had no idea what was going on. We were wondering why we saw so many blue lights until we spotted the Ferris wheels. We got through it and after one of the last lights, stopping on the steepest hill ever, Rose and I found ourselves in the countryside once again.

We were following the Greenbrier River on Rt. 3/12. We elected not to stop at the Bluestone Dam in the interest of time, only to find ourselves stuck behind a beer truck, which was doing his best imitation of the Prius earlier and doing amazingly well for as big as he was. Black Bird made quick work of him in the only clear passing

zone for the next several miles. It was very fortuitous as the riding became very technical and extremely fun!

We were given instructions to turn left on to Mountain View Road. I always wonder when going from a back road with paint, to one without, what’s in store. At first, it reminded me of Rt. 72, near Canaan Valley: a paved golf cart path, once carved by goats, traveling over the hills. This one, however, along with its numerous first gear corners, was sprawling with houses. And they weren’t hunting cabins.

We arrived a few miles later at our predetermined coordinates. I could see why our new friends have stayed here. The Skyline Lodge looked warm and inviting, especially with the lake behind, and a pub and grill on site. Places like these are what I call gems. They are strategically located near parks, waterfalls, lakes, and a host of other attractions bikers are eager to explore. And at the end of the day, park the bike, relax and hang with friends, or meet new ones. There are many places we haven’t seen before in this area.

An overnighter here seems like a no-brainer.

Heading home, we stumbled on Little Beaver State Park, which features an 18-acre lake and a 400-foot-long dam made from chiseled sandstone, like many of the landmarks along the C&O Canal.

We took some pics and hiked a short trail to the top of the dam, hand in hand. It dawned on me that it had been a long while since just the two of us had spent a day on a bike. We watched as a co-ed high school track team began their run; amused at the boys viing to attract the most attention from the girls. It was rated G, and suitable for all audiences.

Grammy award winning soundtracks. We passed our UPS driver doing his best impression of the fastest Prius on three wheels, near home, as he pulled over to let us by. I haven’t figured out what category to put that one in.

Just as the last ride inspired this one. Future one’s will not likely happen, if it wasn’t for this latest reel. Inspired again for the next ride is somewhat of a byproduct of motorcycling: a perpetual motion if you will, of self-sustaining energy. Always thinking about the next ride and sharing it with my co-star, is an addiction like no other. They’re the greatest roles I’ll ever know!

ANX is a breed of domestic cat with no tail, that is native to the Isle of Man, off the coast of England. It was appropriate then that Norton should name it’s red-hot new road racing motorcycle the Manx. After all, Norton had been racing there since the very first Isle of Man TT in 1907, and fielded factory racers every single year the TT was held, until well into the 1970s. No other manufacturer even comes close. And the new Manx was intended to be the ultimate road racer, given the times, not a street bike converted into a racer, nor a racer that could be ridden on the street. The Manx was and always has been a pure road racing motorcycle. And it was ideally suited for the Isle of Man TT, which has always been the test bed for new ideas, and for perfecting older ones.

It’s a long, brutal road race over hill and dale, along narrow, twisting public roads bordered by stone walls, through tiny towns, past throngs of people, that’s absolutely brutal on men and machines. In the early days of motorcycling, reliability was a huge obstacle, so races like this weeded out the weak. The technological gains trickled down quickly into production motorcycles, mostly British motorcycles.

Norton’s first use of the name came with its new 1938-40 Manx Grand Prix. This was essentially a 350 or 500 single with telescopic forks (rare before the war, most were springers or girders), and plunger rear suspension, with magnesium engine cases for lightweight. World War 2 ended its production, but when it resumed after the war, it was game-on for Norton and the rest of the British motorcycle industry as they scrambled to meet the demands for export to the US. With the war barely behind them, Norton prepped a pre-war Manx with new telescopic forks and a twin leading-shoe front brake, and entered it in the 1946 Manx Grand Prix. They didn’t win, but the bike did well.

In 1947, they dropped the ‘Grand Prix’-part, and introduced the new Norton Manx. Again available as a 350 or a 500 single, they were based on Norton’s successful International line with its very-high-tech-for-the-times shaft-driven overhead cam (OHC) setup. It was reliable and fast enough to take multiple wins at the Isle of Man and other Grand Prix venues throughout the late 1930s and well into the 1940s. Norton Factory Racing Team Check out that shaft-drive manager Joe Craig helped in the development for the overhead cams. of the Manx, and in making a version of the factory racer available for sale to a few handselected buyers, who Craig felt would win races with them. In 1938, he created an entirely new top end for the Manx, turning it from a SOHC to a DOHC. A vertical driveshaft drove the cam(s) with bevel gears on each end ran from the crankshaft to the top end, up the right side of the cylinder. Bevel gears on the top converted vertical rotation to traverse rotation, driving yet another complex set of idler gears that drove the two cams. Dual overhead cams (DOHC) were quite rare and exotic at the time, and people weren’t used to seeing them, or saying the words. So, this very sophisticated, futuristic DOHC engine design became known as a “double knocker”, the cams being the ‘knockers’.

The coiled-hairpin valves springs were exposed (not uncommon in those days). The alloy (aluminum) cylinder head was heavily-finned for added cooling. The hemispherical combustion chamber, huge valves and large intake and exhaust ports breathed extremely well, making more power at higher RPMs. When it started out in 1927, the Norton International upon which the Manx was based had a veryundersquare bore and stroke of 79.6mm X 100mm, respectively. In 1953, Craig reworked it to a barely-oversquare 86mm X 85.6mm.

The crankshaft was pressed together with needle-roller bearings on the big end of the connecting rod, and was supported by two robust main bearings. The Lucas magneto was chain-driven off the right (timing) side, and the single-row primary chain and clutch were on the left, as was common practice. This put the foot-shifted 4-speed gearbox on the right, as God intended, along with the kick starter.

And of course it was all of non-unit construction meaning that the engine, primary and gearbox were all separate components that were bolted together in the frame. The whole thing was fed by the largest GP carburetor that Amal made. The long-stroke SOHC Manx at 490cc made 25 to 47 horsepower. The short-stroke DOHC bikes at 499cc made more like 54 horsepower and above.

FEATHERBED BRINGS NEW LIFE

In 1950, the antiquated plunger rear suspension was replaced by a revolutionary new frame called the Featherbed Frame, featuring a swing arm rear suspension. Named for it’s smooth ride, the Featherbed’s light weight, great rigidity, and excellent-handling gave the Manx a whole new lease on life. In fact, Manx’s occupied 2 podium spots that year in the 1950 Manx Grand Prix. Norton pulled out of factory road racing officially in 1954. However, they continued to supply and support a large body of privateer racers who continued to campaign the Norton Manx on road circuits throughout the British Isles, Europe and America. With the growth of Classic Motorcycle Racing in the 1970s, the Manx got yet another new life, and a large number of Manx’s have returned to the track, supported by a vast supply and support network that flourishes to this day.

RACING SUCCESS

Norton as a manufacturer was unparalleled in their commitment to motorcycle road racing from the inaugural Isle of Man TT in 1907 onward. They raced more than just the Manx, but the Manx was surely their most successful model, at least until it was eclipsed by Norton’s powerful parallel twins from the late 50s onward. Nortons (although not necessarily just Manx’s) won 10 Isle of Man Senior TTs between the two World Wars. Between 1930 and 1937, they won 78 out of 92 Grand Prix races, and 7 out of 9 Isle of Man Senior TT races from 1931-1937.

In 1952 Geoff Duke became both 350cc and 500cc World Champion riding Manx’s, and received an OBE (Order of the British Empire) award for it. Just last year, a 1962 Norton Manx won the GP1 class at the 2017 Isle of Man TT with a fastest lap of 108.1 mph, which also happens to be the fastest lap time ever recorded for a Manx.

THE END OF AN AGE

By 1963, the Manx had run its course. Norton’s own 500, 650 and 750 twins, along with twins from Triumph, BSA, Matchless and others, had rendered the Manx obsolete and were outclassing them on the racetrack. Honda had just started its grand prix racing efforts with very some sophisticated designs, the Europeans were ramping up their designs, and the ancient singles just couldn’t compete. Not even the pinnacle of contemporary single design, the Manx, with it’s squarish bore-and-stroke, and its sexy dual overhead cam. And like the BSA Gold Star, which was in a very similar situation, the Manx drew its ignition spark from a Lucas magneto, and Lucas had stopped making them in 1963. BSA took the opportunity to completely redesign their Gold Star single into a unit-construction engine with modern points-and-coil ignition. Norton chose not to redesign its singles, having made the decision to fully commit to their twin-cylinder bikes. The Norton Manx continued on for decades, right up to today in fact, in vintage and classic motorcycle racing. Against other big singles of the day, the Manx was very hard to beat on a road course. They were so good, so right when designed, that the goodness still shows through. Their handling, their speed and power, and their bulletproof reliability are a testament to Norton’s engineers, and Joe Craig. Norton Manx’s still show up regularly in auction, and sell for anywhere from $15,000 on up, with most trading under $20,000. It’s bizarre how cheap classic motorcycles are, when you consider how fast classic car values are rising. Enthusiasm for these great, historic machines has never waned, and a vast parts and service industry flourishes in support of it. Modern manufacturers large and small are using state-of-the-art industrial technologies to make brand new engine cases, cylinder heads, crankshafts and cams. Literally every part that it takes to build a new Norton Manx engine is being made new today. It just goes to show how timeless some designs turn out to be. Like the ’57 Chevy Bel Air, or a ’65 Mustang, the Norton Manx is timeless.

Rookie started off life as the culmination of many ideas in our heads that never made it into our previous builds. We wanted a full show bike that was a polished version of the stripped-down bare bones bikes we are known for. There is always that point in a build in which the sum of parts are assembled and the bike is born but there are still many components to install to make the bike function.

When building rigid sportsters or big twins you have to get creative in hiding ugly components, it’s not like we are building baggers here…

We started off by chopping the whole underside of the Paugho frame off and re-designing it to bolt to the front of the sportster motor. This void in space would change the lines of the typical rigid frame and allow the hand-built exhaust to front exit. Troy Layton then went over the whole frame, spending over 40 hrs. molding and leaving no weld or seam visible. We then engineered the frame to act as the oil tank, this sets the bike apart from every other Harley out there with an oil tank hanging under the seat. With the absence of an oil tank we had to decide where to hide all electronics that are typically found there. At that point we split the sportster tank and created a electronics housing within the tank to hold the battery, ignition, regulator, and wiring. We then finished the tank off with access panel and molded underside. We don’t like fenders, but we wanted to highlight a polished paint job. with the absence of much sheet metal we chose to run the paint job on the gas tank into the seat pan. we turned to Adam Karns of Karns Kustoms to lay down the hot rod black paint. We then had Jason Wharton pin stripe the finishing touches to tie in the overall theme. In keeping with the hidden in plain view theme we utilized internal handlebar controls and ran throttle and clutch cables through the drilled-out riser bolts to hide all lines. Overall when looking at the bike the simplicity is first noticed by most people, and then the questions start rising as to where all the ugly stuff is hiding.

2018 JOINTBASE ANDREWS MOTORCYCLE SAFETY DAY

O

NE OF OUR favorite yearly events to support is the Joint-Base Andrews Motorcycle Safety Day, an event designed specifically to promote motorcycle safety and awareness for our men and women sacrificing their freedoms these United States.

The day started with a group ride followed by advanced skills and riding demonstrations by Prince Georges and Fairfax county Motor Units with braking, throttle control, body and head positions and even proper techniques to upright your bike in the event of a drop. Also providing advanced skill demonstrations was the Moore Racing team who have been a part of the event from the beginning with demo consisting of figure 8s, speed and cornering control by Milayla and William while Dad Will orchestrated the duet action with the finesse of a maestro. This year brother William not only showed some knee dragging skills, but also a little elbow dragging action.

An event favorite is the Slow Ride, where throttle, braking and balance all come together challenging riders to roll as slow as possible without stopping.

Having won this contest previously on a sportbike I thought this would be a piece of cake. Unfortunately, I didn’t factor in going up against pro riders. Not being afraid of a challenge, young Mikayla and brother William stepped up to the line to test their slow ride skills with sister Mikyala leaving William a little flat footed, but it was all in family fun and love. At the end of the event, veteran Pro Dave Russell of Ride Like a Pro Maryland slow rolled his way into another victory

even beating out some of the Fairfax County Officers.

EPA ADMITS ETHANOL CAUSES ENVIRONMENTAL DAMAGE “The federal requirement to blend ethanol into gasoline on the theory that it will reduce the hypothetical global warming that hasn’t appeared yet has been a joke from the start,” states a newsbit circulated by Bikernet.com, and that “By adding a huge amount of demand for corn, it did push up prices for that commodity, and made vast swaths of the rural Midwest prosperous, though it has injured poor Mexicans and others who depend on corn for a substantial portion of their nutrition and driven up the price of feed used for animals, raising meat prices.”

The net energy balance of ethanol production – subtracting the amount of energy necessary to grow the corn, transport it to refineries, and then transport the ethanol to gasoline producers, has been considered a substantial net energy gain. But now the EPA has finally issued a new report and admits that the ethanol mandate comes at a considerable environmental cost.

The Public News Service summarizes: “Federal law requires the EPA to assess the environmental impact of the fuel standard every three years, but the new report, issued in July, was four years overdue. According to David DeGennaro with the National Wildlife Federation, the report documents millions of acres of wildlife habitat lost to ethanol crop production, increased nutrient pollution in waterways and air emissions and side effects worse than the gasoline the ethanol is replacing.”

“The bigger surprise is the fact that ethanol production and combustion significantly increases the production of nitrous oxides (Nox),” notes HotAir.com. “This combines with oxygen in the atmosphere when exposed to sunlight, producing ozone… and actually contributes to the formation of smog and leads to respiratory ailments for many people.”

None of this speaks to the excessive costs that ethanol forces on drivers and auto manufacturers, says Bikernet. com, concluding that; “Alas, the mandate is so popular with corn farmers in Iowa, home of the first round of presidential nominations, that President Trump (and other politicians) not

SYNTHETIC PETROL IS ON ITS WAY The concept of fuel for your bike that doesn’t drain our dwindling oil reserves and offsets its C02 emissions with its very production is closer than we think, according to MotorcycleNews.com. “For decades, boffins have been trying to work out ways to synthesize petrol (gasoline) and diesel, but with recent strides by Ducati owners Audi and tech giants Bosch, synfuels could hit our pumps within the next decade.”

The theory is to harness our natural resources to make petrol and diesel and be able to produce it on an industrial scale so that prices can match current fuel costs.

“The new fuel has many advantages. It isn’t dependent on crude oil, it is compatible with the existing infrastructure and it offers the prospect of a closed carbon cycle,” says Reiner Mangold, head of sustainable product development at Audi.

A huge amount of energy is necessary to process the fuel, but Audi and Bosch’s plans involve a renewable energy source, such as solar or hydroelectric, to power the process. They say renewable electricity can make the process carbon neutral.

When combined with a potential carbon-free production process, it means internal combustion could be part of the environmental solution rather than the problem.

While all this might sound like science fiction, Audi produced their first synthetic petrol earlier this year, called e-Benzin, and is currently constructing a diesel production plant in Switzerland powered by hydroelectricity from a nearby dam.

Mass production of this petrol is the next obvious step.

ACCIDENTS & FATALITIES DOWN AT STURGIS, DESPITE BIGGER CROWD The number of fatal crashes during the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally was half that of last year’s count, according to statistics released by the South Dakota Highway Patrol. During the twoweek event, there were four fatal crashes, compared to eight during the same time period last year. Both injury and non-

injury accidents were down more than 10% compared to 2017, and total citations issued during Sturgis were also down nearly ten percent to 987.

Meanwhile, more than half a million vehicles rolled into the small western South Dakota town of 6,900. Data gathered by the South Dakota Department of Transportation from nine locations around Sturgis show a nearly 8% increase in traffic over last year, which saw 469,100 vehicles.

For this year’s 78th annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, the tally was 505,969 vehicles, which includes motorcycles, automobiles, trucks and motor homes. Still, the number was shy of the 2015 traffic, when 747,032 vehicles rolled into the city for the 75th annual rally.

Levatich said that the uproar surrounding the company’s earlier announcement that it would move some of its production overseas “misinformation”. He reminded employees and dealers that the purpose of this move is to keep their products competitive in their second biggest market. Harley doesn’t sell motorcycles in the U.S. that are built overseas, and that won’t change, Levatich said.

MOTORCYCLE INDUSTRY TRYING TO ATTRACT NEW RIDERS Motorcycling in America is getting a makeover, as industry stalwarts and upstart competitors are trying to attract new riders who want something different from Harley’s big burbling cruisers or screaming Japanese and European performance bikes, says CNNMoney.

The changes are in response to younger riders who are attracted to the efficiency and fun of two-wheel travel, but who don’t want to buy into all the “biker” baggage.

“Millennials and Gen X’ers, they aren’t always seeking to make motorcycling a lifestyle, where it’s kind of everything you live for,” said Tim Buche, president and CEO of the Motorcycle Industry Council. These younger riders are looking for motorcycles suited to a more casual relationship rather than a serious commitment.

With shifting tastes, some start-up motorcycle makers are offering “green” electric bikes, without the noise, vibration and pollutants of an internal combustion engine, while more well-established brands are putting design emphasis on spare simplicity, targeted at a more casual rider.

Even long-venerated Harley-Davidson announced it will start offering products aimed at reaching customers who aren’t traditionally drawn to its renowned American retro-styled offerings, and will produce their first electric motorcycle -- the all-new LiveWire -- in 2019.

NEW MEXICO MRO CALLS OUT SHERIFFS DEPUTIES FOR PROFILING BIKERS A motorcycle rights group in New Mexico is calling out the Bernalillo County Sheriff, claiming his deputies are profiling motorcyclists. “Being profiled, it’s not a comfortable feeling,” said Raymond Gallegos of the New Mexico Motorcycle Rights Organization (NMMRO), saying there’s been a string of incidents with BCSO, prompting them to write a letter to Sheriff Manuel Gonzales.

Some see the patches, the leather and certain colors on riders and assume criminal. However, Gallegos, vice chair of the NMMRO, says that’s far from the truth. “So many of our organizations really benefit the community. We’re working for charities, we’re raising money for this organization or that organization,” he told KRQE News 13.

Gallegos says members of the NMMRO have reported three incidents over the last year that call into question BCSO’s practices. It led the group to write a letter to Sheriff Gonzales that calls out the department for harassing, intimidating and even photographing riders.

So, NMMRO set up a meeting for July 30 with the sheriff. “We really wanted to see how our community and BCSO could work together to get ahead of this profiling issue,” he said. “That was the intent of this meeting with the sheriff’s department.”

However, the meeting was canceled at the 11th hour and the department told KRQE that there’s an ongoing operation to address reckless motorcyclists, but that deputies do not profile riders.

A re-do meeting has since been rescheduled, though NMMRO says it’s also pursuing anti-profiling legislation, and is encouraging its members who were allegedly profiled to seek legal counsel.

HARLEY REFUTES ‘MISINFORMATION’ ABOUT MOVING PRODUCTION OFFSHORE Harley-Davidson Inc. Chief Executive Officer Matt Levatich pushed back against what he called “misinformation” surrounding the Motor Company’s announced plans to move some production overseas.

The iconic American motorcycle maker has been the subject of angry tweets from President Donald Trump since announcing in June it would move some production abroad to sidestep tariffs the European Union slapped on its bikes in retaliation to Trump’s tariffs on imported steel and aluminum.

According to Bloomberg business news, “the spat heated up recently when President Trump said he would support a boycott of the company if it moved production overseas.” Trump’s Thunder Roads® Mid-Atlantic

The husband turned to his wife and said, “That is an absolute bunch of crap.

I bet you can’t tell me one thing that will make me happy and sad at the exact same time.

She said: “Out of all your friends, you have the biggest penis.”

-------------------------------------------------------------A married couple is driving down the interstate doing 55 mph. The husband is behind the wheel. His wife looks over at him and says, “Honey, I know we’ve been married for 15 years, but, I want a divorce.”

The husband says nothing but slowly increases speed to 60 mph.

She then says, “I don’t want you to try to talk me out of it, because I’ve been having an affair with your best friend, and he’s a much better lover than you.”

Again the husband stays quiet and just speeds up as his anger increases.

She says, “I want the house.” Again the husband speeds up, and now is doing 70 mph.

She says, “I want the kids, too.”

The husband just keeps driving faster, and faster, now he’s up to 80 mph.

She says, “I want the car, the checking account, and all the credit cards, too.”

The husband slowly starts to veer toward a bridge overpass piling, as she says, “Is there anything you want?”

The husband says, “No, I’ve got everything I need.”

She smirked and said, “what’s that?” The husband replies just before they hit the wall at 90 mph, “I’ve got the airbag!”

F

irearms technology has evolved heavily, since the end of World War II, across all platforms.

It is debatable on whether the modernization of firearms became simpler or more complex over time. The materials have certainly changed but, due to optimizations for many different enduser aspects, it seems as if modern designs are more complex by comparison to the preceding models.

The 9x18 Makarov handgun has an uncanny beauty about it and is very specifically tailored.

The Makarov was designed in 1949 in the Soviet Union and remain prominent in the Russian Armed Forces despite the PYa (MP-443) being chosen to replace it. The Makarov is also still in service within the Bulgarian Armed Forces. In 1970, Bulgaria began producing Makarovs and eventually Circle-10 picked up the design. This handgun was produced in 1985 and the original serial number, in English, is IK-25-1777. The middle two digits are date codes. PW Arms imported the handgun into the U.S., but wasn’t the only importer to do so.

Importation requires new markings. The importing company name and location, and model and origin are required; as well as a new U.S. serial number in the case of these handguns. They shipped with the original leather flap holster and two magazines.

As with all firearms from the yester-years, the Makarov feels like a machine – matching the looks.

It’s a feeling that I don’t feel when I pick up a Glock or even something like a SIG P229. It’s a testament to the all-steel construction. I have felt the same feeling in older M1911s, Japanese Nambus, German Lugers, and Russian TT33s. They were meant to be workhorses and are tools through and through. This

The Makarov is almost purely right-handed. The exception is the magazine release, which is directly behind the baseplate of the magazine. You can shoot it left-handed but manipulating the controls will be problematic. There is a lanyard loop, safety / decocker on the slide, and a slide-stop on the left side. The weapon is disassembled by locking the slide to the rear, pulling the trigger guard down and sliding it onto the frame sideways, dropping the slide stop, and slowing pulling up and away as the slide moves forward enough to clear the guide rails.

The sights are simple notched rear and bladed front. The sharp design specifications were smoothed out, but are still crude enough to be annoying, and it is best fired one-handed.

Replacement rubber grips can be purchased, but they diminish the originality of the firearm. If you want to eliminate snappiness, especially if you have larger hands, then those grips may be a Godsend

to you. The leather holster isn’t conducive to quick access in a desperate situation. The leather would catch on both the safety / decocker and the front of the magazine. The issue prevented full and immediate holstering and it is my assumption that the quality of the holsters is universal.

Unfortunately, the Bulgarian production Makarovs are still not classified as Curio & Relic firearms, by the ATF, as the Russian and East German models are. If you have a C&R license, you won’t be able to obtain these through that avenue. As the years go by, and as with all other surplus firearms, the prices continue to rise as collectors snatched up what they want. Whether you are simply looking for something different or something new to collect, a Makarov will perfectly compliment a collection.

DELAWARE 2/6 Marines Memorial March/ CVMA 50-1 2018 Motorcyle Ride Saturday, September 8, 2018 from 11:00 AM to 9:00 PM This is a Poker Run style Ride that is being hosted by the 2/6 Marines Memorial March and Combat Vets Motorcycle Association Chapter 50-1. The proceeds for this ride will go to building a memorial at Camp Lejeune at 2/6 Headquarters honoring those who were killed in action in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The 2/6 Marines Memorial March has been hosting several events to raise money to honor my brothers who were killed in action in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The 2/6 Marines Memorial March goal is also to raise awareness for those who are affected by PTSD. Please come out for this event and support a good cause.

We will start the ride at 1200 hours at Port Penn VFW #838 located at 1919 Augustine Beach Road, Port Penn, DE 19731 and will end at Irish Eyes in Lewes DE. Those participating in this event will register at Port Penn VFW#838 on the day of the event. You will pick up your first poker card, locations of other card pick up spots. The cost of this ride is $25 per bike, if you have an additional rider it will be $5 extra. If you are wanting an extra hand you can buy that at Irish Eyes Lewes DE at the end of the ride for $25.

We have picked locations with food and beverages along the ride for the card pick up spots. The Port Penn VFW#838 location will have a limited supply surprise for first arriving motorcycles. If you know anyone without a motorcycle that wants to attend this event to support it they can go directly to Irish Eyes at 4 pm on September 8,2018. HIS YEAR’S Virginia Motorcycle Legislative Roundtable will be held on Sunday, September 16, 2018 at the Richmond Marriott in Short Pump. It is located at 4240 Dominion Boulevard, Glen Allen, VA 23060. The Legislative Roundtable is where Virginia Motorcyclists gather to discuss issues of importance to the motorcycling community, and to have input on the 2019 legislative agenda to be presented to the Virginia General Assembly by the Virginia Coalition of Motorcyclists as well as other state motorcyclists’ rights organizations.

The Roundtable will start at 1:00 p.m. in order to give attendees time to arrive. The Roundtable usually lasts three to four hours. If you can make it we would welcome your voice in deciding the issues that need to be addressed in 2019. In past years the Roundtable was the starting point for legislation such as Virginia’s red light bill, our prohibition against motorcycle only checkpoints, the modification of Virginia Code to allow two two-wheeled
