elcome to July! This edition is packed with all of the sights and sounds and fun of the MD, DE, and DC area. We wish there were more hours in the day so that we could attend each event. It really looks and sounds like summer is in full swing around here. This month we have the Special Olympics ride that went on in Frederick County. Smiles has written an article in Miles with Smiles about the hand salute that we all do when we pass each other on the road. Hillbilly sits down and sips shine with up and coming local boxer Amelia Moore and her training to become a Golden Gloves Champion. We check in on our Rolling Bike Show at Baltimore Harley Davidson and the Red, White, and Blues event at Old Glory Harley Davidson. Our favorite spot is always pictures of our readers from around the area. We have some good pics from the bike nights at Sports Zone in Smyrna Delaware. As you can see we are hard at work trying to keep you updated on everything you need to know about while out riding. We take pride in making sure your ride and time out on your bike is smooth and fun. It doesn’t matter which lane you’re in when you ride with the leader in all things that have to do with the biker community. Thunder Roads Magazine MD-DE-DC. Keep Changing Lanes, Big City

The Lord Is Looking For You to Liberate You For the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show himself strong in the behalf of them whose heart is perfect toward Him. 2 Chronicles 16:9 God is looking for you. That’s right. If you’ll read the Bible, you’ll see that ever since the world began He’s been looking for people who by faith and obedience would allow Him to bless them right here on the earth. He’s been looking for people who would allow Him to demonstrate His power on their behalf— people whose supernaturally abundant lives would make them a walking advertisement of the mercy and power of God. For example, look at the children of Israel in the Old Testament. God wanted them to be this kind of people. He prepared a marvelous land for them to enjoy. It was a land flowing with milk and honey. So I have come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians, and to bring them up from that land to a good and large land, to a land flowing with milk and honey, to the place of the Canaanites and the Hittites and the Amorites and the Perizzites and the Hivites and the Jebusites. (Exodus 3:8). 8

It was a land of rest and abundance where no enemy could stand before them and no sickness or disease could stay on their bodies “So you shall serve the Lord your God, and He will bless your bread and your water. And I will take sickness away from the midst of you. (Exodus 23:25).

25

In fact, as soon as they came out of slavery in Egypt, God wanted them to go to that land. It was a short journey. But they wouldn’t go! Instead, they spent 40 years wandering around in the wilderness, getting nowhere. All this happened thousands of years ago, but do you know what? God hasn’t changed at all since then. He still wants to lead His people into a place of blessing and prosperity. The problem is that in many ways His people haven’t changed that much either. The same thing that kept the children of Israel out of the Promised Land is keeping most believers out of their personal promised land today. The problem is unbelief. “But Preacher, that can’t apply to me. I believe in God.” Israel believed in God too. But when the scouts sent into the Promised Land came back and reported there were giants there, the children of Israel became scared. THUNDER ROADS MAGAZINE MD-DE-DC

Then they told him, and said: “We went to the land where you sent us. It truly flows with milk and honey, and this is its fruit. 28 Nevertheless the people who dwell in the land are strong; the cities are fortified and very large; moreover we saw the descendants of Anak there…. 30 Then Caleb quieted the people before Moses, and said, “Let us go up at once and take possession, for we are well able to overcome it.”…. 31 But the men who had gone up with him said, “We are not able to go up against the people, for they are stronger than we.” 32 And they gave the children of Israel a bad report of the land which they had spied out, saying, “The land through which we have gone as spies is a land that devours its inhabitants, and all the people whom we saw in it are men of great stature. 33 There we saw the giants[d] (the descendants of Anak came from the giants); and we were like grasshoppers in our own sight, and so we were in their sight.” (Numbers 13) If they had believed God, it wouldn’t have mattered how big those giants were, they could have marched right in there expecting God to make those giants scatter in every direction. But they didn’t believe God! So often we try to be smart and figure things out instead of just trusting God and doing what He says. And as a result, we end up in disobedience—which always leads to unbelief. But God doesn’t ask us to be smart. All He asks us to do is to listen to His Word and obey His voice. Why? Because He knows that if we don’t, we’ll end up living out our lives on this earth in a wilderness of defeat like that generation of Israelites did. God is looking for you. Don’t let the giants in your life scare you into hiding. Don’t let them defeat you. Stand up and let God see you. Let Him know you’ll be faithful and obedient. Let Him know you’ll trust Him and His Word no matter what the circumstances say or look like. Then worship Him knowing you’ll see Him demonstrate His power and faithfulness on your behalf 27

As the Children of Israel were liberated from the bondage in Egypt let us celebrate our Liberation this 4th of July from the bondages of this life!

Sippin Shine with Hillbilly & Amelia Moore

I

love the people I get to meet by writing this column each month. I’ve met all kinds of people from all walks of life. I really wasn’t expecting the next person to come in for an interview. I met Amelia Moore at Old Glory HD at their Red, White, and Blues event. All I knew about her was that she was a young female boxer. I think after you read about her you too will be impressed and excited for her future career. The best part about this interview is I didn’t have to share shine with her she is in training. So me and ol’ Blue got to have it. Speaking of Blue I haven’t seen him since Saturday after we drank the shine. Last time I saw him he was running sideways over the mountains toward WV. Damn I’m gonna miss that dog. HB- What is it that you do and what titles do you hold? AM- I am a 24 year old female amateur boxer working my way to the US Golden Gloves Championship in Ft. Lauderdale Fla. My record is 10-1 and I am the Maryland Golden Gloves Champion South Atlantic Region title for 2014. HB- What weight class are you? AM- 132lbs. HB- When are the Golden Gloves? AM- July 7-12 HB- How long have you been boxing? AM- I have been doing martial arts since I was 7. I started boxing with my current coach 4 years ago. HB- What other kinds of sports or martial arts did you do to help prepare you to be a boxer? AM- I did wrestling in college. I studied karate since I was 7 and did kick boxing as a teenager from 15-17. Basically I tried to be well rounded in the martial arts area. I started jujitsu a couple of years ago. I just really try to stay in that combat sport arena.

much time to ride. I miss it and hope to ride again soon. I would love to have a bike right now. HB- There has got to be so much training involved in this. How much training do you do? AM- I train 7 days a week. I wake up and run everyday usually about 31/2 miles to get my cardio in. Then I go to work and after work I go straight to the gym for boxing practice for about 2 hours or so. More cardio after I get out of practice. This happens Monday-Friday. Then on Saturday from 10-2 back to practice and on Sunday more cardio and maybe a boxing practice thrown in there as well. HB- Do people sponsor you? After all you are an amateur. AM- Right now it’s a lot of out of pocket. I’m trying to get out into the community and gather support for my efforts. I have a lot of companies and some businesses that help me out. But it’s tough. I have to hold down a job on top of training. It’s hard because I can’t do local shows anymore because I need to generate more money. It takes money to go to Florida or Missouri or California for a fight or tournament. If you would like to help me you can go to my website at www.ameliamooreboxing.com. I really appreciate any help I receive. HB- Now if you do well at the Golden Gloves Nationals where will you go from there? AM- I’m putting myself into the national scene. My goal is to make the USA national team. If USA Boxing picks me up I believe there is a stipend. I wouldn’t have to work anymore. I would probably pick up a side job but that would be nice to concentrate on my training program. I will be able to train full time and compete all over the world. AM- Yes it is definitely is in my future thoughts and plans. It’s a huge goal of mine.

AM- Absolutely. I believe it really helped me out.

HB- Where are you from originally?

AM- My mom has been riding since she was 16. I grew up around bikes my whole life. She has a 97 Heritage Springer Harley. I have been riding dirt bikes since I was little. Unfortunately with all the training that I’m doing I don’t have THUNDER ROADS MAGAZINE MD-DE-DC

AM- I think I’m an inspiration to women and men. People recognize hard work. That is something I strive for. I don’t ever want to hear that she’s pretty good for a girl. She is a fighter and at the end of the day it doesn’t matter whether I’m a man or a woman. I’m a fighter. I have a special place in my heart for Amelia. She is an awesome young lady. I hope the community does get behind her and help her out. Please visit her website www.ameliamooreboxing.com to learn how you can help her put Maryland boxing back on the map. Thunder Roads MD, DE, D.C. is going to help and you can help as well. GO Amelia!!! We will keep you updated on how she is doing and where you can see her the next time she fights close to home. Remember when your drinking shine Lose the lid, share with your friends, and if Hillbilly is there please drink in a circle. Always have just one more for the Big Dog! Until next time God Bless! I’m going to look for Blue. Darn dog never could hold his shine.

HB- Olympics yes or no?

HB- I’m sure all of that helped with your boxing.

HB- I forgot to ask you. Do you ride a bike?

on the men’s side of prize fighting. Do you see that changing and do you think of yourself as an inspiration to other women?

AM- I was born in Connecticut. I grew up in Maine. I ended up in Maryland headed to the US Naval Academy. I left the academy and chose to stay in the area to box and I’m still here. HB-Let’s talk about the fact that you’re a female in what has traditionally has been a male sport. The big money seems to be JULY 2014

Due to the current financial situation caused by the slowdown in the economy, the Government has decided to implement a scheme to put workers of 60 years of age and above on early, mandatory retirement, thus creating jobs and reducing unemployment. This scheme will be known as RAPE (Retire Aged People Early). Persons selected to be RAPED can apply to the Government to be considered for the SHAFT program (Special Help After Forced Termination). Persons who have been RAPED and SHAFTED will be reviewed under the SCREW program (System Covering Retired-Early Workers). A person may be RAPED once, SHAFTED twice and SCREWED as many times as the Government deems appropriate. Persons who have been RAPED could get AIDS (Additional Income for Dependents & Spouse) or HERPES (Half Earnings for Retired Personnel Early Severance). Obviously persons who have AIDS or HERPES will not be SHAFTED or SCREWED any further by the Government. Persons who are not RAPED and are staying on will receive as much SHIT (Special High Intensity Training) as possible. The Government has always prided themselves on the amount of SHIT they give our citizens. Should you feel that you do not receive enough SHIT, please bring this to the attention of your MP, who has been trained to give you all the SHIT you can handle. WHY don’t you ever see the headline ‘Psychic Wins Lottery’ WHY? do people order bacon double cheeseburgers, large fries, and a Diet Coke. WHY? do banks leave vault doors open and then chain the pens to the counters. WHY? do we leave cars worth thousands of dollars in the driveway and put our useless junk in the garage. WHY? do they make hot dogs in packages of ten and buns in packages of eight. WHY do they sterilize the needle for lethal injections? WHY are they called apartments when they are all stuck together? If flying is so safe, why do they call the airport the terminal? WHY didn’t Noah swat those two f’in mosquitoes?

Bean– Hello, I’m Bean and happy to meet ya’. I am a super friendly little guy who loves being with people. I know how to “sit” on command, but I don’t do it for very long -- that’s because I have more fun jumping in the air like a Mexican jumping bean! Sometimes I play with small squeaky toys, but I would rather spend my time getting attention from people. If you are looking to adopt a little guy with a big heart then I’m the one for you! Stop in soon. I’ll be waiting.

Bodie- Hello Ladies and Gents! Name’s Bodie and I am a friendly strong two year old guy looking for a place to call my own. I enjoy belly rubs, playing with toys and going for hikes! Sound like the match for you? Stop on by BHS and ask to meet with me! I will be waiting for you!!

Emma - Well hello there, I’m Emma and I think I am one terrific bulldog! I am friendly and believe I would make a loving and loyal companion for someone looking to add a four legged friend into their home. I enjoy being with people and going for long walks. Since I’ve been here at BHS I haven’t really played with many types of toys, even though they give me a lot of them. I do like kongs, though, and sleeping on soft blankets. In my previous home I lived with kids and although I lived with cats, it did not go well, so no kitties for me in my new home. please stop by soon so we can meet and go outside.

Paisley- Paisley here! Aren’t I a beauty? I’m an active girl looking for someone with an active lifestyle. I would love to spend my days going for long walks, hikes, maybe even a run, but mostly I enjoy the company of people and getting lots of love and affection. The staff says I walk really well on a leash, and also know commands like ‘Sit’ and ‘Paw.’ I’d love for us to learn even more together.. If you are looking for a big cuddle bug then I may be your girl!

The biker wave

hen I first started riding, one of the coolest things I enjoyed was the “biker wave”. It made me feel a sense of pride being acknowledged by other bikers. It’s a symbol that shows an understanding of how it feels to ride, unrestricted from the confines of an automobile. We knew what it meant to be one with the road. I decided to dig deeper and research how this originated and, if in fact, it meant the same to other bikers as it did to me.

According to my research, it originated one day in 1904 when Arthur Davidson passed William Harley, and since they knew each other, they waved. Well, another biker saw the two “Kings of Motorcycles” doing this and thought it was a biker necessity, thus the tradition was born. When motorcycles weren’t as popular as they are today, a wave showed their separation from other people on the road. These riders took the chance of bad weather and road conditions just to experience the scents, sounds, and feeling the wind in your face. Similar to how school bus drivers always wave to each other, it’s an understanding that they have chosen to drive this overly bulky vehicle to ensure that our children make it safely to school and back.

used. I personally have always used the low peace sign which I learned stands for “peace on the road”. Then there is the low fisted wave which indicates a sense of “power on the road”. Often times you will find a biker is unable to wave, such as at a stop light, so you might receive a simple head nod which translates into “yes, we know”. Every once in a while you might encounter the open hand, raised high and waving vigorously. Similar to how we felt when we first rode without our training wheels as kids. I will jokingly refer to this as the “geek” wave. Give them time and appreciate that we all went through our first rides.

The most important thing I learned about the wave is that it indicates we are one, we are like family. Although we have never met, the understanding was there that if you needed anything, we would be there to help.

An example of this was when I was returning home from the “Burn Ride”, and driving across the Bay Bridge, I had a flat tire. I was forced to pull over, and I panicked about what my next steps would be. Car after car passed me by. Finally, a group of bikers saw that a comrade needed assistance and pulled over to help. I was fortunate that one of them had As history has shown, the early negative connotations that some “Fix-A-Flat” so that I was able to continue on to the were associated with motorcycle riders, or “bikers”, only Annapolis Harley where I could replace my tire. helped to solidify this sense of community in an “us against I continued on my journey home with a feeling of brotherhood them” sort of way, or more accurately “them against us”. and knew that I had the best assurance that any problems The more I read into this, the more I learned about, not only that may cross my path would be resolved with a little help the reason for the wave, but the many different waves bikers from my friends.

I would like to thank all those who attended our 31st annual state party at Allegany Fairgrounds in Cumberland, MD. Thanks to you we had a wonderful turnout. A big thanks goes out to all the ABATE officers and members who worked so hard to put on a great party. Also, thanks to the bands, Snakebite, R&R Train and Impact. A huge thanks also goes out to Thunder Walrus and Billy at Strip Club Choppers. Together we made this one of the best state parties we have had in years. It just continues to get better. If you missed this year’s party, please get ready for next year. Congratulations to Carol Pilkerton who won the new 2014 Street Glide. What a prize. Our newest chapter, Mountain Chapter, did a wonderful job working hard at the party along with setting up and taking down. We couldn’t have done it without you. Mountain chapter took us for a beautiful scenic ride Saturday morning. It couldn’t have been better. I can’t wait for next year’s party. It will be better yet. We have had a couple issues in the state with motorcycle only checkpoints. Just know that ABATE is working hard on preparing for the 2015 Legislative session. Part of that preparation will be on motorcycle only checkpoint and profiling legislation. We need to all unite to lobby strong in Annapolis to stop profiling in this state. If you are stopped at a motorcycle only checkpoint, ABATE needs to know. There is a traffic stop form on our website which you can fill out and send to us. We will gather all the information from these in preparing for our legislation. It is imperative

THUNDER ROADS MAGAZINE MD-DE-DC

that we all complete these forms so that ABATE can see where the issues are and work with law enforcement and legislators to stop profiling. If you ever have any questions or issues you can always call the state office and I will address them. ABATE is proud to be on board with the Maryland Coalition of Clubs (COC). We are all working hard at making sure Maryland is the safest state to ride in. It is good to see all clubs come together to resolve issues and plan for ways to unite us all. I am so proud to be a part of that. ABATE also sits on the Maryland Coalition of Motorcyclists. This is a good venue to voice issues in the motorcycling community along with ways to resolve them. We are presently working on ways to address impaired riding and we just updated the motorcycle section of the driver’s handbook. So as you see, ABATE is very busy. We work all year long for motorcyclists. We are ever vigilant. We watch closely for anything that could adversely affect motorcyclists and we come up with ways to correct those issues. In order for us to do all these things, we need members. You do not have to do a thing except join if that is what you choose. Your money helps us work for you. Please support us by joining and becoming a proud member of ABATE. Thanks to all of you for everything you do for motorcyclists. Keep up the good work. See you on the road. iders, passengers and supporters gathered for the 2nd Annual SOMD ride. The ride was a scenic route through the rolling hills of Frederick County. This ride is a fundraiser for the Special Olympics of Maryland Frederick County teams to keep the program running. The fundraiser assists with costs of purchasing equipment and uniforms as well as rentals of fields, pools, gymnasiums as well as trips to Regional, State and National competitions. This year’s ride was held at The Owl’s Club, 316 South Jefferson Street in Frederick, MD. The ride started at The Owl’s Club with stops at Brookside Inn and Brunswick American Legion and ending back at the starting point. The ride was a nice, stress free, scenic event allowing for wind therapy and to break any PMS (parked motorcycle syndrome). At each stop, they had door prizes and 50/50 tickets available for a drawing at the end of the ride. Once, back at The Owl’s Club, a light dinner was made possible through the club. Music was provided by DJ Ewok. Frederick Area teams compete in sixteen different sports from golf and kayaking to basketball, softball and football.

THUNDER ROADS MAGAZINE MD-DE-DC

Several thousand compete each year at the State Level at Towson University to earn a chance to compete and represent themselves, teams, coaches and home towns. This year’s SOMD Frederick teams are represented at Nationals in New Jersey competing in golf, cycling, bowling, and softball as well as two coaches was picked for the aquatics and golf. Upon meeting with Ruth Vickers, Area Director, and Rick Fuss, coordinator for the ride and coach of several teams, I learned that this is a labor of love. The most important part and member of the Special Olympics are the athletes themselves. The Special Olympics was started in the late 1950s and early 1960s by Eunice Kennedy Shriver after noticing that individuals with intellectual disabilities did not have events and in some areas not even a place to play. The first Special Olympics were held in her backyard in Potomac, MD. For more information on the Special Olympics and how to become a sponsor, athlete or coach go to www.somd.org/ frederick-county.

IS MOTOX DANGEROUS FOR OUR KIDS???

At a time when two motocross communities in different parts of the world are reeling at the death of two 14 year olds being killed in motocross accidents - we have so many people questioning us as to “Why?? Why we allow our children to participate in such a dangerous sport” Trent Haywood and Austin Mincey were doing something they were so passionate about - motocross. It had been in their blood for years, it was what they thought about daily, it was what they dreamt about nightly and it was something that drove them to be the best they could be on the track. Why would you try and take that passion away from them and all those kids that ride MX?? Trent Haywood was from Tauranga, New Zealand and was killed competing at the Michael Godfrey Memorial, Austin Mincey was racing in Indianapolis, USA in a qualifying race, when he crashed. Although it was the same date that Trent died June 1st , NZ is a day ahead so it was June 2nd for us. Austin passed away 3 days later from his injuries on June 3rd. As a parent, we get nervous when our child heads out onto the track some hate watching the starts, some hate watching the jumps and some are nervous just watching their child racing hard out to gain that extra position on the track. As parents, we THUNDER ROADS MAGAZINE MD-DE-DC

endeavor to supply them with the best protection money can buy, a consistently well maintained race bike and training and practice that helps to reduce the risk of injury to himself and those that he rides against. My son plays rugby for 60 minutes on a Saturday morning in NZ - rugby is a very physically demanding sport - motocross still has to be ‘THE’ most physically demanding sport in the world - rugby is a rugged tough sport with 15 players up against 15 others, charging at each other like trains storming down railway tracks, tackling each other so hard it is bone crunching. Unlike American Gridiron, the only protection I send my son on the field with is a mouth guard - more to protect his beautifully aligned teeth after 18 months of expensive braces, but definitely not to protect him from injury. Maybe I should be questioning myself about why I send him out there like that, and yet others still question me about how I can send my son out on a track to participate is such a dangerous sport like MX. On a day when New Zealand is reeling from the death of an innocent shop owner who was stabbed by a 13 year old boy in a daylight robbery you question us about why we allow our children to do MX?? On a day when America is also reeling from the death of a student in another school shooting in Portland, Oregon - you JULY 2014

question us about why we allow our children to do MX? I know where my child is and I know who my child is associating with - that is protection in itself. If I did not know those things - then “yes” I should be nervous - nervous about where my child is heading in the future, not why I allow him to participate in a sport like MX. Austin Mincey’s parents were praised for allowing their son to follow his dream to be a motocross racer. “You gave him his dream - his dream was to be a motocross racer and that’s who he is and what he is. Motocross separates us from our home into a bigger family, a motocross family. Mincey family, you see guys with jerseys on, that’s family. Austin was our family. We may come from different backgrounds and different parts of the world, but we’re a family and Austin was a part of that big, big family. That’s the best thing about the sport and you guys gave that to him.” There are so many things in this world right now that want to distract our children and pull them away from us and the one thing they love doing - and yet they still question us about why we allow our children to do MX?? The Poker Run

W

ell it’s that time of year again. I am getting bombarded with invitations to Memorial Runs, Charity Runs, Poker Runs, etc. I’ve done many Poker Runs in the past, but not so many anymore. Don’t get me wrong, I think they are a great way to raise money for a cause. We just stay so busy doing Club rides that it doesn’t leave much time for public events. People often ask us to attend, but I honestly don’t enjoy them as much anymore. When you mix alcohol with either novice riders, or riders who think they are more accomplished than they are, it puts everyone’s life in danger. Oh they always start out good enough. Many bikes meeting up, getting registered and packing up to get ready to roll. People who don’t know one another are often shy, or hang out with a few friends that are riding too. By about the third stop many have had a few and start to loosen up. By the fourth or fifth stop you start seeing who the dumb a$$ is in the bunch. People start getting braver and sloppier with their riding. People start thinking it’s ok to blast off from traffic lights, rev their motors when stopped, do burn outs and act like general idiots. Yeah, no thanks. On the off chance that I actually do a Poker Run or Memorial ride, about two times a year, the club typically will hold back and ride in our own pack. I’ve put many miles in with these guys to my right, and we know how each of us think and react before we do ourselves. I know the personality of every brother I’m riding with, and that keeps us safe from riding with idiots. Many poker runs ride ABATE style, or staggered on the lane. We of course lane share, side by side. I HATE having anyone I ride with hanging in my blind spot. Staggering is fine when riding with novice riders, so there’s less of a chance of them rolling into a curve and taking you out too. I tend to judge who I ride with in the same manner. If I don’t know you well enough to ride next to me, I probably won’t ride with you.

THUNDER ROADS MAGAZINE MD-DE-DC

Having said that, I again say I’m not against those type of runs. They have earned thousands of dollars for downed bikers, sick kids, and illness research. I’d rather see a Poker Run than a Bowl-athon.. but that’s just me. I’d ask that you keep your fellow participants in mind though. In the past I’ve attended several Poker Runs where people have gotten Life Flighted, Ambulance Transported, and even Killed. What a waste. The common denominator was alcohol in these specific cases I witnessed. That mixed with adrenaline, the roar of all the bikes, the pack.. it can all lead to piss poor decisions. You take a great event for a worthy cause, and ruin it. If we do attend on e of these events, we have no problem calling out an idiot and telling him to get his head on straight or get the hell away from us. It’s not always intentional. Just understand that many folks don’t know how to ride in a pack. Hell just last weekend I did a Club Brothers memorial Ride. There were some citizens invited. We let the family members (Including the Club Brother who puts on the event in memory of his son) ride just ahead of the club. I was behind one such citizen when something came off the club brother’s bike ahead of him. A dust cover or something, nothing worth dying for. The dude damn near locked up his brakes trying to stop to pick up it up. I had 25 bikes behind me. I cut left and cleared him, and my club brothers did the same, but not without coming about 2 inches from taking him out. Rest assured he got an earful at the next stop. There’s not a damn thing that falls off your bike (except maybe your Ole Lady) that’s worth slamming on your brakes in a pack. Let the sunglasses or cigarettes go man, they make more. So as many of you head out this year to ride with your friends, and support those in need, take care to be aware of your surroundings as well as those you are riding with. If you don’t, the next Poker Run Benefit may be for you! Thanks for Reading! Tabasco, Tabasco.TRO@Gmail.com – Courtesy D. Smith, Thunder Roads Ohio

Pleazr & Jawz

Bucket List Ride of a Lifetime! by Rebel Ron

I

’ve been riding street bikes around Franklin since 1976 & I’ve been working at S & G Custom Cycles in Columbia for 12 years along with doing business with the 40 year old bike shop since 1981. I’ve seen & done many wild things in this time period along with meeting some fascinating people. Let me tell you about two of them. Riders in the Middle Tenn. area may recognize these two Chapel Hill residents who both ride with the orange colors of the Weasles motorcycle group, aka a “Drinking Club.” Here are “Pleazr” & “Jawz” Wiedel, two people who have lived the dream in 2013. That dream being a 19,000 mile motorcycle ride crisscrossing America from May 1st to Labor Day.

miles of this trip were on Interstates.) They toured some War Between The States battlefields on the way out of Tenn. & Miss., visited Pleazr’s Mom in Ft. Smith, Ark., attended a Weasel party in the Ozarks, & cruised by their son’s home in Kansas City. They would ride further on to see too many places to list here but they made it to the Grand Canyon, saw the World’s Largest Ball of Twine, climbed Pike’s Peak, partied at the Hollister Bike Rally, another Weasel party in Portland, crossed the Rocky Mountains a couple of times, went to Harley’s 110 anniversary, & more in 24 states before heading to Sturgis Bike rally. (I asked them what was the best place they visited & both answered Crater Lake, OR. Very beautiful there! )

Early last year Jawz lost his job because of downsizing & soon after his wife was laid off from her job. After careful consideration & several adult beverages they decided to make that two wheeling trip they had dreamed of that many of us have on our Bucket List. While enjoying the beaches of Panama City they made the decision to go for it. They had no certain itinerary, no deadlines, some vague plans, & family/friends all across America they had not seen in a while. They traveled with their comfortable & well accessorized Bunkhouse Camper with a faithful GPS along with the determination to travel America away from the Interstates. (Less than 3K 40

During this months’ long bike ride they camped out 3/4 of the time along with staying with friends & checking in motels too. They had no problems with either of the Harley’s & only needed maintenance & tires. Incredibly they JULY 2014

THUNDER ROADS MAGAZINE MD-DE-DC

were only rained on 3 times & snowed on once on this long journey. The most miles they rode in one day was 740. Some of the more exciting things they had to deal with in their path were mud slides, major fires, a plane crash, wild animals, & some rough back roads. But the thing to remember is that they lived the dream so many of us riders have longed to do. Cruise the back roads of America like the Sportster riding Bronson from that old TV series. More importantly the Wiedel’s learned what “Freedom” is truly about in our country. It is sacred. Finally, Jawz must be living right because when he finally came home a company from Jacksboro, Tenn. that makes travel trailers for bikes was looking for him about a job. He is now the new Product Development Manager at Bushtech Bunkhouse. Y’all ride safe & often!

NEWS BYTES

NCOM BIKER NEWSBYTES Compiled & Edited by Bill Bish, National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM)

U.S. HOUSE VOTES DOWN FEDERAL HELMET LAW PUSH The Obama Administration’s proposed GROW AMERICA Act, a four-year $302 billion transportation funding measure, contains a provision to allow NHTSA to begin lobbying states and state legislators “to consider proposals related to motorcycle helmet use laws,” effectively overturning a ban against such federal lobbying on the issue that has been in place since 1995. But on June 9th, by a voice vote on the floor of 229-192 (10 absent or abstaining), the U.S. House of Representatives approved an amendment offered by U.S. Representatives Tim Walberg (R-MI) and Jim Sensenbrenner (R-WI) to strike that provision from the House’s version of the legislation; titled the Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act (H.R. 4745). The full bill was approved by the House the following day, with the offending language in Section 102 of H.R. 4745 successfully eliminated, but the Senate version of this highly politicized and largely partisan transportation funding bill is still under consideration. The Administration “strongly opposes House passage of H.R. 4745,” and “looks forward to working with the Congress on an orderly appropriations process…” “VISION ZERO” HITS NYC A controversial European traffic control plan referred to as “Vision Zero” has found its way to American shores, as NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio has gained support of the New York City Council for his Vision Zero plan to eliminate traffic fatalities by 2024. On May 29, 2014, the City Council approved a package of new policies aiding Mayor de Blasio’s quest to end traffic deaths, modeled after a Swedish philosophy that treats all road deaths and serious injuries as inherently preventable, the initiative has become the centerpiece of the new administration’s transportation agenda. Among the changes approved, which includes misdemeanor charges or loss of license for hitting a pedestrian or cyclist, certain “exhibition behavior” from motorcyclists will not be tolerated under the law. The new rules governing motorcycle behavior outlaws “wheelies, doughnuts, burnouts and revving” -- a first offense would be punishable by up to 60 days in jail. AMERICAN LEGION RIDER DISCRIMINATED AGAINST BY “NO COLORS” POLICY Bikers all across South Florida are threatening to boycott and protest a restaurant after a member of the American Legion

Riders said he was discriminated against for riding a motorcycle and wearing patches that proclaim his military service. Proud Navy veteran Robert Thompson of Pompano Beach told WPTV Channel 5 (NBC) that a manager at the Old Key Lime House told him to remove his leather vest because they do not allow “gangs or colors” and that “his kind” was not welcome. Within days of the incident, hundreds of veterans and bikers began sharing what happened through social media. A Facebook page was even created to boycott and protest the Old Key Lime House. Fearing backlash, management at the restaurant suspended the employee who made the comments, and the owner has apologized, calling it “a terrible misunderstanding.” A manager at the restaurant told the TV news station that their “no colors or gangs” policy should not have been applied, claiming that the restaurant welcomes bikers and veterans; although a sign still hangs at the bar that states: “WELCOME ALL BIKERS – NO PATCHES or CLUB AFFILIATION ALLOWED – LEAVE IT ON BIKE” Thompson said he did not speak out to cause controversy but to stop discrimination, no matter what someone looks like, from happening again anywhere. MINNESOTA APPROVES PURPLE HEART MOTORCYCLE LICENSE PLATE Few U.S. states offer the option to get a personalized motorcycle license plate. Minnesota just approved a bill to create a special motorcycle license plate for wounded combat veterans which will be a shrunken version of the Purple Heart plates that car owners can get. MOTORCYCLE THEFTS CONTINUE DOWNWARD TREND Motorcycle thefts continued to decline in 2013, a downward trend that began in 2008; and of five major brands only Harley-Davidson owners saw an uptick in the number of stolen bikes. According to new data released by the National Crime Information Center, an electronic clearinghouse of nationwide crime data aggregated by the FBI, overall last year there were 45,367 reported motorcycle thefts nationwide, the equivalent of one every nine minutes, down 1.5%, even as bike sales increased. Of those stolen, there were 3,907 Harley-Davidsons, up 4% from 2012, while the percentage of stolen Honda, Yamaha, Kawasaki and Suzuki motorcycles fell 2.1% (Kawasaki) to 9.1% (Suzuki). Honda was the bike stolen most often, followed by Yamaha, Suzuki, Kawasaki and Harley-Davidson. The thefts were highest in California, followed by Florida, Texas, North Carolina and Indiana. Thirty seven percent of the motorcycles reported stolen in the U.S. in 2013 were recovered, compared with about 50% of the stolen cars.

NEWS BYTES FLYING OLD GLORY COULD VOID YOUR WARRANTY Due to wind resistance from flags fluttering behind his Harley trike, former Wisconsin State Senator Dave Zien was informed by Harley-Davidson that the factory would not honor the warranty after the clutch failed during a ride to Dallas, Texas for the National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM) Convention last month. Zien, 64, a longtime member of the NCOM Legislative Task Force, says the Motor Company denied his warranty claim because of the excessive drag created by the flapping flags he flies from the back of his 2014 trike, which has 15,000 miles on it and is covered by a seven-year unlimited mileage warranty. “All they said was, because I fly flags on the bike, there’s no warranty on the powertrain,” Zien told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel newspaper on May 15. A combat Marine and Viet Nam veteran, the former lawmaker is a Hall of Fame biker who has set several long-distance riding records since the 1970s and says he’s always done so with multiple flags on his bike. His 1991 Harley with one million miles on the odometer has been on display since 2000 at the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum and Hall of Fame in South Dakota. Harley-Davidson told the newspaper that Zien’s warranty is still in effect, but because of the addition of aftermarket products -- essentially, the huge flags -- Zien has voided any coverage on the powertrain and transmission. “The issue isn’t that the flags are heavy,” Harley spokeswoman Maripat Blankenheim told the Journal-Sentinel, “but they provide terrific drag on the engine and the transmission, especially when the bike is at highway speeds.” She added that the flag mounts that Zien used were not Harley products. “When you alter a motorcycle with noncompliant products, that does impact your ability to make a warranty claim,” Blankenheim said. Zien currently has seven flags flying from his three-wheeler including full-sized Stars and Stripes, Don’t Tread on Me, U.S. Marine Corps and Wisconsin flags and an NRA banner that proclaims “Stand and Fight”, and he says all the flag mounts were installed at a Harley dealership. THUNDER ROADS MAGAZINE MD-DE-DC

The “Million Mile Motorcycle Man” is ready for a fight to defend the right of all to fly a flag on a motorcycle without voiding the warranty. “Ain’t nobody gonna stop our flags, not even Harley-Davidson corporate,” Zien told the paper. ELECTRIC CYCLES GAIN TRACTION Despite America’s love affair with Harley-Davidsons, electric motorcycles are revving up U.S. sales, according to a recent article in USA Today, and two-wheeled e-vehicles are gaining converts among urban commuters and law enforcement. Sales of high-performance e-motorcycles will rise at least 30% per year through 2023 in North America, cites a report last month by Navigant Research, a market research firm. Co-author John Gartner sees several reasons: consumers looking for refuge from high gasoline prices, increases in city traffic and improved e-vehicles. Zero, the largest U.S. manufacturer of e-motorcycles, has boosted production from fewer than 100 units in 2010 to more than 2,000 this year, notes Scott Harden, the company’s vice president of marketing. Compared to gaspowered counterparts, he says Zeros are cheaper to operate -- about a penny per mile -- and don’t make noise, fumes or vibrations. E-motorcycles sell best in the San Francisco Bay area, southern California, Florida and Texas, says Adrian Stewart, director of marketing for Oregon-based Brammo, which rolled out its first model in 2009. The U.S. market faces increased competition as BMW launches an e-scooter this year, and Yamaha plans an electric entry in 2016. Also on the way are three-wheeled electric tuk-tuks, vehicles without sides that have canopies and are common in Asia. Netherlands-based Tuk Tuk Factory is partnering with eTuk USA, which is seeking road-use approval for three models from the U.S. Department of Transportation.
