God Bless their Memory! And to the volunteers, Police, Fire Department, and EMT’s; we extend a great deal of gratitude for the courage and grace in which you handled such a horrible tragedy. Our thoughts and prayers go out to you and hope you soon find peace with the images you witnessed at Sandy Hook Elementary School.— Thank You

Simon is a 3 year old male orange tabby who came into our shelter when his owner passed away. Unfortunately the person who inherited these animals was not able to care for them so they were surrendered to our shelter over a month ago. Simon came in with his brother Bailey, and they are very close so we are looking for a home that can take both cats. We joke around and call Simon our little vampire kitty because when he tilts his head up his two teeth in the front stick out of his mouth and look hilarious! Bailey is the same age as his brother and comes from the same circumstance. He is 3 years old and huge! Bailey is by far the shyer of the two and loves to spend his days sleeping in a little box we gave to him. He is a very affectionate cat and comes to you when he is called. Although initially both cats look similar Bailey is a bit darker in color and has a much larger frame. These two cats came from a very sad situation where they lost their owner and no one could keep them. If you are looking for two of the nicest most calm cats available, Simon and Bailey are your boys! Welcome to the Tommy and Sally show! These two ferrets are ridiculous, all they want to do is play or sleep. It is impossible to open their cage and not have them crawl into your lap. They will literally scramble over one another to get out and have you hold them and once they are in your arms they are perfectly content. They do have to go home together, but honestly once you see them interact it would break your heart to separate these two. The staff is always getting them out and walking around with them draped over their shoulders!
is very sweet cat, although she will not get up to greet people as they pass, as soon as you open her cage she pops right up and comes to get pet. Patches would also do best as an only cat. Kaylie Mulligan is a 3 year old Border Collie / Plot hound mix who came into the shelter last month when her owners had a new baby and KM was too much to take care of. She has lived with both dogs and cats and gets along well with most animals. She has a lot of energy and would make a great running partner or companion for another dog. KM is very sweet and knows how to sit perfectly for cookies. Bindy is the cutest little Chihuahua ever! She is 5 years old and absolutely precious. Bindy came into our shelter last month when her owner could no longer afford to care for her. She is very shy and timid at first but if you talk in a high pitch voice she will slowly make her way over to you. She loves to be held and carried around in someone’s arms, she also likes her pink little jacket and wears it all around the shelter. Stop by our shelter to visit the animals shown or the many others up for adoption!

Nanni is a lop eared domestic rabbit that came into our shelter in August when her previous owner’s child became allergic. This is a very cool rabbit! She has a lot of personality and will sit very calmly to be pet. Nanni is litter box trained and heaven forbid a towel ever falls into her litter box, she will grab it with her teeth and pull it back out, she is very particular! Nanni would do well with all age children, this rabbit doesn’t have a mean bone in her body. She also appreciates the finer things in life and devours any fruits and veggies we give her. Rocky is a 2 year old male neutered Brown tabby that came into our shelter in February when his owner could no longer keep him. He is a very relaxed cat usually found sleeping in his plush bed at the SPCA. He is very laid back, and usually doesn’t seem to mind when people are around, this cat can sleep through anything. Rocky would prefer to be an only cat because he is not too fond of sharing his personal possessions with other felines. Patches is a 2 year old female cat that came into our shelter back in July when her previous owner was moving and could not take the cat with them. Patches has a loft in her cage and she can often be found perched up high watching all the people pass below her. She 6

Growing up in Annapolis, MD., I played youth football, among other sports, for nine years and some of the things that I learned are what I still live by today. Like how important it is to be part of a family or team on and off the field. And as much as winning is a great feeling, it’s not what it’s all about. It’s about having a good time, learning, appreciating competition and being a good sport. These are the lessons and qualities that I’m still applying to my life today, from raising my daughter to running my small business.

In early 2011, I met a little kid named Clayton Stockstill a 6 yr old local MX racer. I went to see him race and was instantly captured by the sport on so many levels. I said to myself “this is it; I need to be involved in this”. I went on to sponsor Clayton by helping him with his entry fees for the season. This sport is so expensive; for example, just in the MAMA Series (not out of state Nationals or other One-Off Events) the cost for each rider can sum up to $110 per race weekend, so every little bit helps. Additionally, by mentoring this little racer that looks up to me, I am able to pay forward all the great learned as a child. Clayton would come in from a race that he didn’t place 1st in and tell me how this should have happened and that should have happened blah, blah, blah. I stopped him and

I went on to become a very popular tattoo artist around the world, working with celebrities, pro athletes, musicians, and actors which lead me into an 11 yr career touring with bands such as Metallica, Tim McGraw, The Rolling Stones, Rob Zombie, ‘N Sync, Phil Collins, etc. In November, 2010 I came off the road to take the best job I’ve ever had in my life, being a Dad to my daughter Sixx. Knowing that was the plan for me, I stayed local and opened Orange Tattoo Company January 2010.

After the 2011 season, I realized I could do more with this sport and the kids. So I decided to create a team of four riders. The team has qualifications for the riders and they are handpicked by me. Each rider must be respectful and grateful to their families, they need to be good sports on and off the track, they must present every report card to me to review, and they need to have fun. Placement is not a qualification to be on my team. I don’t care what place they finish. I think it’s important to praise kids for being happy, positive, and good human beings. As much as we all want to win in life, it’s not what it’s always about. I like seeing kids be kids. Competition is healthy on all levels of life but let’s also recognize the importance of commitment and hard work regardless of placements. I also contacted sponsors and received an amazing response. For the 2012 season we were so grateful to have on board Answer, Asterisk, BelRay, Dunlop, FMF, Gaerne, Limited

Decal, Matrix Concepts, ProTaper, 100%, Ellicott City Motorsports, and Orange Tattoo Company. So amazing!!!!!! Each rider of my team is sponsored by these great companies, as long as they ride for my team and stay qualified. For example, if a rider should fail to get good grades, then that rider would lose his or her spot on the team, which means they would lose all support from these great sponsors. This 2012 Season, we happened to get three Championships. We were also very fortunate to have to have Maryland Native Pro Rider, Nick Evennou, mentor the Team throughout this entire Season. Finally, we can’t forget the Riders Families who have to sacrifice an average of two weekends a month from March to October. Big thanks to them! And last but not least, much appreciation to all of our awesome Sponsors for taking care of and supporting the Team. – Frankie Orange

What is 21 + 196 =? One Hell’uva Ride!!!!! Turbo Charged Pro Street Hayabusa which is the WORLDS FASTEST STREET BIKE. He rode it to set the record at 214.08 m.p.h. and an E T of 6.96.
By Hillbilly
On a beautiful sunny Saturday in October, I rode down to Capitol Raceway to check out the motorcycle racing. That was the day I met and got to see Joey Gladstone, from Townsend, DE., ride his bike, or should I say his two-wheeled rocket. Joey, who looks like he should still be in high school is actually is 21 years old and has been racing professionally for five years now. Looking at him you would say “Hey! Who’s the young kid out there?” But when you talk to him, you realize he’s a true professional and very good at what he does.
During the past three years he has finished 2nd in the nation all three years in the pro street class. He also rode at the Gator Nationals and at Atlanta and qualified at both races. With little more than a month off in the winter, Joey and his team get ready to head off to Aruba and Curacao for testing and more racing. He finished 2nd once again in the MIROCK Pro Street Series again, but he was able to grab 3 wins.
Joey was a rookie in the Pro Street Series this year while racing in the MIROCK racing series for DME Racing. This past June, at Maryland International Raceway, he rode his 2010 Suzuki Pro Street Hyabusa, to an ET of 6.981 and a speed of 213.74m.p.h. That’s right I didn’t write that wrong. Even after watching him race I can’t believe how fast he goes.
With his youth and talent behind him, Joey is sure to do great things this year. I’m hoping the readers at THUNDER ROADS MD, DE, and DC will join us here at the magazine and go out and support this local young man and his racing. He will be racing in the MIROCK Pro Street Series with appearances at Maryland International Raceway, Budds Creek, MD and Rockingham N.C.
It wasn’t all speed and glory for this Delaware racer. He started like most on some real slow junkers. Then someone sees him and put him on a faster bike, and then a faster bike, and so on. I didn’t get to meet his sponsors from DME racing, but they must have seen how good this young man could be in the quarter mile. On any given weekend during the season you can find him riding his Turbo Charged GSXR1000, or his 2010
After Joey and I finished talking, he zipped his leather suit up calmly; walked to his 2010 Turbo Charged Pro Street Hayabusa and ran an amazing 196 M.P.H. in a quarter mile. No one else that day ran close to the speed this incredible upcoming superstar made look easy. Good Luck next season Joey. As for our readers, look for Joeys upcoming season schedule in the Magazine as soon as it’s available.
Do A New Thing!
but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, 14 I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. This is traditionally a time in which we as individuals look back over the last year and make empty promises about our future. The scripture tells us we cannot be a people of the past. Many times our past hinders our present and aborts our future.
Isaiah 43:18-20 (NKJV) 18 “Do not remember the former things, Nor consider the things of old. 19 Behold, I will do a new thing, Now it shall spring forth; Shall you not know it? I will even make a road in the wilderness And rivers in the desert. 20 The beast of the field will honor Me, The jackals and the ostriches, Because I give waters in the wilderness And rivers in the desert, To give drink to My people, My chosen.
Why we must forget the past… We stunt our growth when we get satisfied with what God did yesterday. Paul said forget the past each day is a New Day! We often miss God’s purpose for our lives because we are caught up in the mistakes and the success in our past. All have sinned, but all things are made new in Christ. Let that sin die! If you can get past the past you can realize it is a New Day! And this is your day!
Philippians 3:12-14 (NKJV) 12 Not that I have already attained, or am already perfected; but I press on, that I may lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus has also laid hold of me. 13 Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended;
“No, this is not the beginning of a new chapter in my life; this is the beginning of a new book! That first book is already closed, ended, and tossed into the seas; this new book is newly opened, has just begun! Look, it is the first page! And it is a beautiful one!” – C. speeding through Calvert County, and you get pulled over, Tony has one suggestion for you, “Press hard, you’re making five copies.” They realize they aren’t young anymore. Their schedules can be tough at times, but with vacation time and the help of other officers, they are able to resolve any scheduling conflicts. They also try to keep one weekend to themselves, and slow down on the holiday season, “it’s important to be home with their family.” According to Dash, “we all have demanding jobs and being professionals during the day and then go out and play like children on instruments at night.” One louder keeps it together by staying a close knit family. They do a lot together, even with the production company, they take care of and look out for each other, and support each other in everything, like a family. Tony takes time to coach his kid’s football teams, who are six and seven, he says, “it’s all worth it, watching them play and run around in their helmets.” They love the biker community. Dash has been riding since he was sixteen and often rides down to Myrtle Beach or Daytona. He rides an 04’ Harley Road King and even has the token story about the “breakdown in Jacksonville,” that some of us can relate to. In fact, One Louder has played in Myrtle Beach and tries to play there every year. “We love the biker crowd, we play the music they want listen to, and bikers always show up and they give back. Bikers are one of the most charitable communities out there.” Tony, on the other hand, used to own a Kawasaki ZX750, but he sold it. He claims to be saving up enough money to buy a Harley, and is completely reformed. (We’ll check on that later, Mr. Press Hard)

Randy turned out to by the put, One Louder lives up to the reference by taking it to the next level. guy, “he’s a very humble individual” said Dash. One Louder has been in demand over the past nine years traveling up and down the east coast form New York to Florida. They’ve played in venues that seat 100 people to places that seat over 40,000. They 14
I asked them what they thought the key to their success was, the answer was simple, they said the Baby Boomers. “They’re coming back out to the clubs and this was the music they grew up with, and they want to hear it again, not the angry music.” What they love about playing the music they play, is the appeal to audience. They love to look out in the crowd and see the 20 something’s and the 50 something’s rocking out together. Tony was telling a story about being at a bar called Vera’s in southern MD. “There was this lady, and I use the term Lady loosely, she looked like the nicest woman in the world, we went into Fire Woman by The Cult, and as soon as we went into it, she threw up the devil horns and screamed “F@#$-YEAH” , the whole band looked at me and said “Really!?” did that just happen? Later we see here walking out with a walker, “you guys F@#$’n Rock.” They do a lot of charity work too. One Louder was one of the featured bands every year for the annual Toy for Tots drive at the Anne Arundel County Fairgrounds. And a few years ago, they helped with a Calvert County Sherriff’s Deputy that was paralyzed from the waist down as a result of an accident while on the job. They raised enough money to purchase him a wheel chair accessible 2008 Chevy van, and enough left over to help outfit the Sheriff’s office to make it wheelchair accessible. There isn’t one charity that One Louder associates itself with, they like to blanket every charity and help out where they can. So what’s next for One Louder, they are trying to find time to get in the studios and record some of their own music. As you can imagine, working around their schedules is difficult. But they want to get a CD out there and see where it takes them. When asked if they want to start playing more of their originals, they said they like playing their originals, but playing the cover songs also gives the crowd energy and the energy feeds back to them, and that energy is why Eric started the band. One Louder is truly grateful of their fans, they have fans that have followed them since 2003, and they have been to every show. Dash and Tony just want to say “Thank you so much for supporting us.” These guys are a lot of fun, so much so, during this interview I recorded twenty-five minutes of conversation. I could only use about five minutes of it, the rest were just us cutting up and carrying on. They enjoy everything about what they do, and it shows in their concert. So, if you happen to catch one of their shows, be sure to throw up the devil horn and scream “F@#$ Yeah! You guys F@#$’n Rock!” They’ll appreciate it!!
Three of them are Police officers, Dash, Randy and Tony. You may recognize Tony, a Calvert County Deputy, he’s been a regular on the TruTV show Speeders, better known as “Fester.” So, if you find yourself

Nam Knights of America Motorcycle Club Old Line Chapter, Maryland
Nearly 23 years ago, Nam Knights founder Jack Quigley, a Marine veteran of the Vietnam era, and a few of his motorcycle riding friends in Rutherford, New Jersey, came up with the idea of creating a motorcycle club that was dedicated to the honor and memory of those who fought, died, or were injured in Vietnam. Since they were also police officers, they decided that it would make sense to honor individuals in law enforcement and public safety, in addition to all military veterans, not just Vietnam veterans. Jack then developed a mission statement and organized the beginning of the Nam Knights of America, MC. The first chapter was established in Rutherford, NJ and has thereafter been known as the “Parent Chapter.” After identification of an organizational mission, the club began to function in support of Vietnam and law enforcement personnel who have given the ultimate sacrifice or suffered serious injuries. As part of this effort, the Parent Chapter would travel each year to Washington, DC and participate in the Memorial Weekend Rolling Thunder activities in honor of veterans. While in Washington, DC, they would also visit the Law Enforcement Memorial to pay homage to the public safety officials who have given their lives in the conduct of their duties. Within three years, local veterans and law enforcement individuals from Prince George’s County, Maryland, became interested in the Nam Knights and their mission, and sought to start a chapter in Maryland. As a result, the Parent Chapter approved the formation of the second chapter of Nam Knights, the Old Line Chapter of Maryland. The Old Line Chapter is now the second most senior chapter of nearly 60 chapters in the Nam Knights organization. Nam Knight chapters are located mostly on the East Coast from Florida up to Canada, and as far west as Wisconsin. In concert with the Parent Chapter, the mission of the Old Line Chapter is to honor and support the memory of United States veterans and public safety officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty, to assist veterans and police officers in time of need, and to promote community awareness through sponsorship and participation in various community and fund-raising events. Currently, the Old Line Chapter has 25 members. Over the years, however, a number of chapter members have left to develop new chapters in Maryland and Virginia. It is not our intent to create new chapters simply for the purpose of increasing our membership. Rather, the primary reason for development of other chapters is to address local needs and to facilitate the development of brotherhood which is the fabric that bonds the members in carrying out the mission, traditions and values of the organization. 16

The Old Line Chapter is more than a group of people who wear “colors” and ride Harley Davidson motorcycles. We are a part of the community. We are currently home-based in Chesapeake Beach, Maryland, (housed at the American Legion Post 206). We are an IRS approved 501 (c) (3) charitable corporation. During our 21 years of service, we have established programs and events that support military charities, law enforcement and public safety charities, and various community charities. We support the efforts of those who protect this Nation, especially those in active service and public safety. We honor and support the Constitution of the United States of America, and the communities we live and work in. We strive to honor those who have served to protect, and we support their families. Every year, our chapter conducts events designed to raise funds that we then donate to selected charities. After covering costs for an event, all funds collected are eventually donated to charitable causes. Our annual fund raising picnic, held during Rolling Thunder weekend, is traditionally our first fund raiser of the year. During the past four years, we have been successful in our partnering with the Chesapeake Beach American Legion to produce the best picnic that we have ever done. During the summer, the Battle of the Bands/Old Line Bike Show was conducted in partnership with Old Glory Harley Davidson. During this event, we raffled a 2012 Harley Davidson motorcycle that we had been selling tickets for all year. In October, the ladies of the Old Line conducted a Fish Fry that generated additional revenue which has been distributed to our charities. Each year the Old Line Chapter works actively to increase our contributions to charitable organizations that include the Maryland Concerns Of Police Survivors (COPS), the Sheriff’s Departments of Prince George’s and Calvert Counties, Landstuhl Military Hospital, AAFB Fisher House, local Volunteer Fire Departments, the American Legion, Sons of The American Legion Scholarship, Nam Knight Darrell “Stone Cold” Canter Scholarship, Wounded Warriors Programs, and many more local and national charities. As we look to the future, it is our intent to continue the charitable efforts of the past, and to promote pride in our nation. This is who we are. Thank you for your interest in the Nam Knights of America, MC. We will continue to serve and support those who protect the USA. A.J. Smith The Gingerbread Man
Mike Horsey, Doug Buxbaum, Steve Hoffman
5KBattleRoyale By Hillbilly
While driving down Ocean Highway in Ocean City, MD., around 28th, street you might begin to notice flags on both sides of the street. One side is purple and the other side just as proudly flies the black and yellow. This is not an accident. The purple side is the Pit and Pub, one of a number of Ravens roosts throughout the area. The other side is Buxy’s Salty Dog Saloon a proud landmark for all things Steelers. A local group, OC Tri Running, thought it might be good to play
up this rivalry and the first Annual Boardwalk 5K Fan Challenge was born. The owners of Pit and Pub, Steve Hoffman and Mike Horsey, and Buxy’s, Doug Buxbaum, quickly agreed! The owners of the two bars selected two local charities that could benefit from such an event, The Children‘s House By the Sea and the OC Paramedic Foundation. Let the smack talking begin!
On Saturday November 17, 2012 we showed up and found a large group of people of all ages dressed up in Raven’s purple and Steeler’s black and yellow stretching and getting ready to run. The weather was great so the turnout was fantastic.
I had to check out both sides, so I started with the Raven’s fans. I asked them what brought them out and the answer I got time and time again was “We Hate the Steelers!” They really came to win the trophy and beat the Steelers. The only Raven’s fan who didn’t tell me he was there because he hates the Steelers was the Gingerbread Man. That’s right, I saw a Gingerbread man run on the boardwalk. Well you know I had to find out what this was all about. When I asked A. J. Smith, aka the Gingerbread Man, why he was running today he said he was running from the “Muffin Man”. Of course he was, I walked right into that. On the other side the Steeler fans also meant business. They responded with “Steeler Pride” and “to beat the Ravens.” During the weekend both bars and their fans participated in
cornhole tournament and a field goal kicking contest. Buxy’s had a perogie eating contest and Pit and Pub had a rib eating contest, my favorite. They packed the bars with events all weekend and made it fun for everyone. They even held a silent auction that had included some great NFL memorabilia. The owners of both bars hope this is the beginning of many years of good natured fun. When it was all said and done the Ravens won the 5K race and the game on Sunday night. I think the real winners ended up being the whole community. They raised some money for charity, got a little exercise, watched some football with friends and hung out in two of the BEST places in the area. Thanks Pit and Pub, and Buxy’s Salty dog Saloon! It was a great weekend.

News Bytes THE AIM/NCOM MOTORCYCLE E-NEWS SERVICE is brought to you by Aid to Injured Motorcyclists (A.I.M.) and the National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM), and is sponsored by the Law Offices of Richard M. Lester. If you’ve been involved in any kind of accident, call us at 1-(800) ON-A-BIKE or visit www.ON-A-BIKE.com. SUPREME COURT STRIKES DOWN LAW AGAINST FILMING POLICE The U.S. Supreme Court has rejected an Illinois prosecutor’s appeal to allow enforcement of a state law barring ordinary citizens from recording police officers as they do their jobs. A lower federal court had found that Illinois’ anti-eavesdropping law violates free speech rights because it was being used by police and prosecutors against people who tape law enforcement officers. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) had filed a lawsuit against Cook County in 2010 to halt prosecution of ACLU staffers for recording cops in public spaces, an activity promoted by the ACLU all over the country, but when Chicago officials objected the legislature passed a law outlawing the filming of them. The so-called “anti-eavesdropping” measure was designed to prevent covert recordings without consent, but the State of Illinois has applied that statute to mean any photography in a public zone; meaning no photographing or recording a cop on a public street while he/she is making a traffic stop, arrest, or for any other reason. Most other states don’t have laws prohibiting the filming of anyone or anything in public places, and the Illinois law had some serious teeth, carrying a 15-year prison term. But the High Court has sided with a lower court decision protecting the rights of Americans when it comes to privacy under the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, and they refused to take action on the appeal. In rejecting the state’s plea to criminalize videotaping police, the Supreme Court apparently agrees with the lower court, and police officers have no more expectation to privacy in public than any other person in America. Harvey Grossman, legal director of the Illinois ACLU, was “pleased” with the result; “The ACLU of Illinois continues to believe that in order to make the rights of free expression and petition effective, individuals and organizations must be able to freely gather and record information about the conduct of government and their agents -- especially the police.” The National Coalition of Motorcyclists has presented various seminars during past NCOM Conventions on proper procedures for recording law enforcement officers in the performance of their duty, and although the Supreme Court has now given their blessing to such exercises of our civil rights under the United States Constitution, be aware not to interfere with, disrupt, or cause delays for police officers in their official duty while doing so. VIRGINIA BIKERS SCORE HELMET VICTORY IN COURT A dozen motorcyclists convicted of violating Virginia’s mandatory helmet law have had their convictions reversed by the state Court of Appeals, while three others had their helmet convictions affirmed by the court. All 15 defendants were wearing headgear of some kind when they attended the 2011 Virginia Beach Bike Classic, but police claimed the riders’ helmets failed to meet the
26
NCOM BIKER NEWSBYTES Compiled & Edited by Bill Bish, National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM)
state’s standards. Each of them was convicted in general district court and in circuit court, but on appeal the state acknowledged the lower courts were in error in 12 of those 15 cases. Virginia’s helmet law, Code §46.2-910, requires helmets to meet any of three published standards but does not require any marks or labels to show compliance. Ten of the convictions addressed in Bennett v. Commonwealth were based solely on a lack of labeling, so those convictions were reversed. One rider wore what a trooper described as a “toy” helmet with a plastic chin strap held together with a key ring. The state argued the key ring flunked one published standard, but the court of appeals panel said the state failed to rule out compliance with the other standards, so that conviction also was reversed. In three cases, the motorcyclists admitted to a trooper that they knew their headgear was not the real deal. One helmet even had a label identifying it as a “novelty helmet,” not for road use. For those three riders, the trip to the Court of Appeals proved fruitless. Convictions affirmed. An admission of guilt, while always ill-advised, doesn’t always equate to a conviction, however, as the 3-judge panel drew a fine line with one remaining defendant who told the trooper he knew he was wearing a novelty helmet -- but that statement alone was not enough to establish it failed to meet any of the safety standards, the court held. That biker’s conviction was reversed, as reported in Virginia Lawyers Weekly. TRAFFIC FATALITIES LOWEST EVER Deaths of bicyclists rose 8.7% and fatalities of occupants of large trucks swelled 20% last year even as total traffic fatalities dropped to their lowest level since 1949, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recently reported in an analysis of 2011 traffic deaths. Overall traffic fatalities dropped 1.9% to 32,367. The decline came as the number of miles driven by motorists dropped by 1.2%. Last year also saw the lowest fatality rate ever recorded, with 1.10 deaths per 100 million vehicle miles traveled in 2011, down from 1.11 deaths per 100 million vehicle miles traveled in 2010. The increase in bicycle deaths likely reflects more people riding bicycles to work and for pleasure as our culture begins moving toward healthier and greener modes of transportations, but the increase in deaths of large-truck occupants is more puzzling though it may be due to more trucks returning to the road as the economy improves. Motorcycle deaths also rose 2.1%, marking the 13th time in the last 14 years that motorcycle rider fatalities have risen, reflecting more than a decade of record sales levels and escalating registrations nationwide. NEED FOR SPEED Florida #1 for Speeding Tickets, Wyoming #1 for Speed Deaths. As you may know, Texas drivers can now legally outrun the rest of
JANUARY 2013
THUNDER ROADS MAGAZINE MD-DE-DC
the U.S. with a new 85 MPH speed limit posted between Austin and San Antonio, now the fastest stretch in the country. But it’s in Florida that you run the greatest risk of getting slapped with a speeding ticket. Georgia, Nevada, Texas and Alabama follow Florida as the Top 5 states for speeding (Texas ranks a mere #4). Wyoming drivers, meanwhile, have the highest rate of speedingrelated deaths in the nation. 25 million speeding tickets are issued nationwide each year, and drivers pay an average of $150 per ticket. These findings are part of newly-released data just published in the “Need for Speed” infographic on Bankrate’s Insurance Quotes website. These statistics are for all vehicles. TEXAS JUSTICE: WOMAN JAILED FOR WARNING OF SPEED TRAP A woman in Houston was arrested and jailed for 12 hours after she held up a make-shift sign to warn drivers about a speed trap. Natalie Plummer was officially charged with walking in the roadway -- jaywalking, essentially -- though she says the police officers who arrested her were just angry that she had tipped off speeders. Plummer was riding her bicycle along a road near downtown when she spotted police officers pulling drivers over. She told KTRK News that it looked like the officers were targeting cars at random, so she recorded some of the activity on her cell phone. Then, she said, she turned around and wrote “Speed Trap!!” in large letters on a piece of grocery bag to warn oncoming traffic. “I was simply warning citizens of a situation ahead,” she told the TV station. The officers didn’t see it that way. Shortly after she took up her post, a squad car pulled up to Miss Plummer and an officer grabbed her backpack off her shoulder and began rifling through it. Then, he handcuffed her and told her she was under arrested for felony obstruction of justice and that she would spend three to five years in jail, at minimum. She ended up being charged with misdemeanor “walking in the road where a sidewalk is present,” though she was in jail 12 hours before she was able to bail out. Plummer said she wasn’t obstructing justice, and she wasn’t in the roadway, either -- she was on the sidewalk. “He couldn’t take me to jail for holding up this sign or he would have. So all he could do was make up something fake about it,” she said. A KTRK legal analyst says Plummer should not have been arrested, but the Houston Police Department stood by the officer’s report that she was walking in the road and a danger to herself and others. LANE SPLITTING SUPPORTED BY LANDMARK REPORT Motorcyclists should be allowed to weave their way to the front of stationary traffic and car drivers should have to study up on motorcycle safety, according to a “landmark” parliamentary report recently released by Australian lawmakers. It is currently an offense there, and in most developed countries, for motorcycles to “filter” (lane split) between cars at red lights and in slow traffic, but the report by the Road Safety Committee said
THUNDER ROADS MAGAZINE MD-DE-DC
that behavior could cut commuting times, slash congestion and should be legalized. The report, applauded by the motorcycling community but given a mixed reception by other road users, also recommended questions about safety around motorcycles be included in future car license tests. Rob Smith, of Motorcycles Australia, told the Herald Sun newspaper that the report was a big win for motorcyclists but it might be some time before new laws are introduced. He said he understood concerns from other motorists about safety, but agreed with the government officials that filtering through traffic could be a solution to congestion. “Filtering motorcycles benefits every road user by saving travel time,” Smith said. “People should be concerned about road safety, but there is no evidence anywhere in the world that lane filtering is actually dangerous.” Victoria Motorcycle Council deputy chairman of data and research Rob Salvatore said the report was a landmark recognition of motorcyclists as legitimate road users. Committee chairman Murray Thompson MP said there has been a 66% increase in registrations of motorcycles in the past decade and passenger vehicle drivers needed to be more aware of them. “GANG LAW” CHALLENGED DOWN UNDER The Finks MC in Australia is challenging the constitutionality of a law that would make it easier to declare them a criminal gang, and have asked Australia’s highest court to overturn laws they say are draconian and threaten civil freedoms. Under the laws, police in Queensland state have sought to have the Finks declared a “criminal gang”. Similar laws have been used elsewhere in Australia, and have been met with similar resistance from organized biker clubs. “This legislation can be used against any organization which the police or the government may target to say they are criminal in nature,” Finks lawyer Bill Potts told reporters ahead of the High Court challenge. “We say it’s a law too far, it’s a law that’s unnecessary. We say that in total that large sections of it are in fact unconstitutional,” he told Reuters. The laws have been successfully challenged by other so-called “gangs”, including the Hells Angels, in two other states; New South Wales and South Australia, “frustrating governments who have tried to link rival gangs to the illicit drugs trade, trafficking of illegal firearms, robbery, murder, extortion and prostitution,” the news agency reported. New South Wales and South Australia subsequently recast their laws after the High Court of Australia decided that new powers allowing lower court judges to hear evidence in secret and to prevent legal appeals went too far under the Australian Constitution. NEW YEARS’ SIRLOIN w/PEPPERCORN SAUCE
Orange Tattoo Company 2020-A West Street Annapolis, MD. 21401 www.orangetattoocompany.com 410-224-6088
1-1/2 lbs. of Beef Sirloin; sliced into 1/2” thickness *If you ring the bell and ask the Butcher of any supermarket chain , they will gladly do this for you. Drizzle of High-Quality Olive Oil 3 Cloves of Garlic - leave skin on, but smash with middle of knife blade so it’s garlic bulb is flat. 1/3 Cup of Cognac 1/3 Cup of Quality Beef Stock 1/2 Cup of Drained Green Peppercorns (in spice aisle at large chain supermarket) 2 Tbls. Spicy Brown Mustard 2 Tbls. Real Butter 1/4 Cup of Fresh Parsley or dried will work, just rub it between hands to release the potency. Salt & Freshly Cracked Black Pepper *I do this recipe w/ Filet Mignon, but Sirloin is def. a much more financially feasible way to go, especially if serving more than two. “If” you have a large (10 or 12”) cast iron pan, this is the way to go, if you don’t, then just use a highquality non-stick skillet pan. Get your pan screamin’ hot over medium-high heat. Drizzle in high-quality Olive Oil to completely cover bottom of pan. Salt & fresh black pepper season both sides of your steaks generously. Place them one by one in the pan and DO NOT TOUCH them once placed. This allows for perfect carmelization. At this time, toss in your smashed garlic cloves to get that flavor into the steaks. Cook exactly 2-1/2 mins. on each side for medium rare, 3 minutes for medium. Once each side is beautifully browned, remove and let the steaks rest on a side plate. Add your Cognac to the pan; (step back so you don’t singe your eyebrows); turn down to medium heat, let the alcohol burn off, remove garlic pieces and any skins, add peppercorns and beef stock and mustard. Stir until all well incorporated together, then add butter and swirl around until totally melted. Turn off heat and add steaks back into pan and take a large spoon and repeatedly keep covering each steak with peppercorn sauce. Take your tongs and place each steak (total of 5) onto a serving platter with all steaks in a row, pour

the scrumptious sauce all over the steaks generously. Top with parsley. This is so easy and tastes like a steak you’d order in a 5-star restaurant......but tastes better because it’s home.
GINGER ALE GLAZED CARROTS
1 Bag of Peeled Baby Carrots (in fresh produce section) 3/4 Cup of Quality Ginger Ale Next, mix up the following ingredients: 2 smashed cloves of garlic 1 Tbls. of Ginger (dried is o.k.) 1/4 Cup of Chopped, Toasted Hazelnuts (in nut section of grocery) 1/4 Cup of Parsley (dried is o.k.) SNOW ON THE ROOF BROWNIES
Buy your favorite brand of box Brownie mix. Make it up in the bowl, add in any of your favorites; chopped pecans, chopped macadamia nuts (my fave), raisins, cranberries, chocolate chips, whatevs....bake as directed; making sure to spray pan down well with non-stick, then flour lightly. When done, invert onto a plate, the re-invert onto another plate so you have brownies upper side up and not the bottom. Let cool totally. Then take a full jar of quality Marshmallow Creme’ and swirl it all over the top very heavy & generously.Yo-Yum

A lady is throwing a party for her granddaughter and had gone all out – a caterer, band and a clown. Just before the party started, two bikers showed up looking for a donation for one of their charities. Feeling sorry for the bikers, the woman told them that she would give them a donation if they would help chop some wood for her out back. Gratefully, they headed to the rear of the house. The guests arrived and all was going well. The children were having a wonderful time. But the clown hadn’t shown up. After 30 minutes, the clown finally called to report that he was stuck in traffic and would probably not make the party at all. The woman was very disappointed and unsuccessfully tried to entertain the children herself. She happened to look out the window and saw one of the bikers doing cartwheels across the lawn. She watched in awe as he swung from tree branches, did mid-air flips and jumped high in the air. She went up to the other biker and said, “What your friend is doing is absolutely marvelous. I have never seen such a thing. Do you think your friend would consider repeating this performance for the children at the party? I will pay him $50.” The other biker says, “Well, I dunno’ lady. Let me ask him. ‘Hey bubba! For $50, would you chop off another toe?” The actions and legislation passage via several states brought this to mind: It all makes sense now. Gay marriage & marijuana being legalized on the exact same day. Leviticus 20:13- “If a man lays with another man he should be stoned.” We were just interpreting it wrong all this time. Who Knew? WHY? do drugstores make the sick or elderly walk all the way to the back of the store to get their prescriptions filled, while smokers can buy cigarettes at the very front, right next to the door? WHY? isn’t there mouse flavored cat food? WHY? is ‘abbreviated’ such a long word? IN HIS INFINITE WISDOM……………. A man was sick and tired of going to work every day while his wife stayed home. He wanted her to see what he went through so he prayed: “Dear Lord: I go to work every day and put in 8 hours while my wife merely stays at home.I want her to know what I go 32
through, so please, allow her body to switch with mine for a day. Amen. “ God, in his infinite wisdom, granted the man’s wish. The next morning, sure enough, the man awoke as a woman. He arose, cooked breakfast for his mate, awakened the kids, set out their school clothes, fed them breakfast, packed their lunches, drove them to school, came home and vacuumed the entire house; upstairs and downstairs, took the cat to the vet, and stopped at the bank to make a deposit, but ended up having to go inside, went grocery shopping, loaded up 12 bags of groceries and then drove home to put away all the groceries, paid all the bills and balanced the checkbook. Drove to the Post Office; cleaned the cat’s litter box and bathed the dog. Then it was already 1 P.M. and he hurried to make the beds, do the laundry, dust, and sweep and mop the kitchen floor and sweep off the front porch and use the leaf blower and blow off the back deck and refill the bird-feeder. At 3:30 drove to the school to pick up the kids and got into an argument with the daughter the way home, which was added stress. He never dealt with the kids on this emotional level before; it was very strange to him and made him question everything. At 4:00 he set out milk and cookies and got the kids organized to do their homework, then actually got to sit down for a minute on the couch and watch t.v. while folding 3 baskets full of laundry and then running around to various rooms putting folded clothes in various dressers and hanging up shirts, pants, etc.At 4:30 he began washing vegetables for salad, breaded the pork chops and snapped fresh beans for supper. Cooked the supper. After supper, he cleaned the kitchen, ran the dishwasher, folded even more laundry, bathed the kids, read them all stories and put them to bed. At 9 P.M. he was exhausted and, though his daily chores weren’t finished, he went to bed where he was expected to make love, which he managed to actually stay awake through but then passed out; comatose. The next morning, he awoke and immediately knelt by the bed and said: “Lord, I don’t know what I was thinking. I was so wrong to envy my wife’s being able to stay home all day. Please, oh Lord please, let us trade back, I beg of you. ”The Lord, in his infinite wisdom, replied: “My son, I feel you have learned your lesson and I will be happy to change things back to the way they were. You’ll just have to wait nine months, though. Apparently, you got pregnant last night.”

The Thunder Roads Magazine APP A MUST for all bikers
I
By Hillbilly
n this new world of technology, an old school biker could get lost. Thank goodness Thunder Roads Magazine has an App for that! It will help even the technologically challenged, like me Hillbilly, enter the next century of technology. The best part is it’s FREE. I know that›s hard to believe, but yes, it’s FREE! Once you download this App, I doubt you will go on any rides or trips without it. Our vendors and sponsors will love it as well because you will be able to find them with the push of a button. From the first day I learned about the App, and every day since, I still can›t believe how easy it is to use and how much information is in my phone under one little button. The first thing you need to do is download the app from your particular App store on your phone. Click on search and type in Thunder roads magazine. Download and install the app on your phone. When you first open the App give it a couple of seconds to find you and what state you are in. That›s right I said it will find you! Maryland edition will pop-up for everyone in MD, Delaware, and D.C. We are the same App for all three and the listings will come up for all three. When you hit the events/calendar part, a listing will come up letting you know all the rides and events that are coming up and where you can go for more info. If you are looking for a place to eat, hit advertisers and then hit bars/restaurants. You’ll see our advertisers and the specials they are running. You can also find apparel, and other business services that are biker friendly. If you hit the map button, it will show you where you are at that time and show you where you need to go to find the business or event you are looking for. You can also visit their website or call them from the App. If your memory is not as good as it used to be, like mine, you can set a reminder about the event or advertiser you want to visit. Sounds too good to be true doesn›t it? Now if you go to another state that has Thunder Roads Magazine, the app will automatically switch to that state and you can browse their events and advertisers. Please remember to shop with all the Thunder Roads advertisers; without them we don›t have a magazine. We now have Thunder Roads Magazines in 21 different states and we are working to get all of them. As with all new technology, there have been some glitches with the app and sometimes you have to manually switch to the state. We are working everyday to fix these minor issues. If you find yourself having any problems with the app please don›t hesitate to call Hillbilly at 443875-7887 and I will do my best to have your problem resolved. Soon the app is going to be your number one source when you’re on the road. It will help you find events, places to shop, and eat, that caters to bikers and who would LOVE to have you stop by. Don›t wait DOWNLOAD it TODAY!
