When we ring in the New Year, Some may have gotten out a clean piece of paper and wrote down their intentions for this year. Well, I decided not to write down anything but to make a commitment to increase my prayer time with the Lord and to work on relationships and my health. I believe it is the spiritual condition in my life that the Lord is the most interested in. He says in His Word that my body is a temple for the Holy Spirit. I found out long ago that those lists of “do and don’ts” either get lost or forgotten. The things that really matter to us, we usually work on, so I find it best to limit any desires each year to a few things and concentrate on the really important ones whatever they might be. Most people want a fresh start in life. Those that are sick want a clean bill of health. Those in financial trouble want to be out of debt. We can do these things, but we need to work on them one day at a time. I didn’t make any commitment last year but to love God more and to appreciate my family and friends. I think I made the grade, but only God has the score. Try not to overwhelm yourself with too many good intentions. Just pray and ask the Lord what you might need to work on in your life, spiritually, financially, and maybe even how to improve relationships or your health, but don’t get bogged down with so many resolutions. For the Kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking, but of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. (Romans 14:17, NIV)

Thunder Roads®MD-DE-DC-WV

The Bible says to seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added unto you. What is the Kingdom of God? It is righteousness, peace, and joy. If we have those three things most everything else will fall in place. If we seek to please the Lord and find out what He wants us to do, then it will all work out. I know He tells us to seek wisdom, so if we do that our health issues and financial priorities will change. The Bible tells us His mercies are new every morning, so I will daily ask Him what He wants me to do. There is nothing wrong with accomplishing some short term goals, but never let them consume your entire energy by making them so hard they are beyond your reach. Simply trust God to help you each step of the way! Get a fresh start each year, but plan for a wise one too. Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail, they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. (Lamentations 3:22-23NIV)

GOVERNOR: Hi!! It’s me, Governor!! I’m looking for an awesome home… maybe with you?! I’m a super active, athletic kinda’ guy. I love to go for long hikes and could play fetch for hours. I’m also quite the agility star; I can jump on and over nearly any obstacle. Did I mention how smart I am? I know how to sit, lay down, and give both paws. I’m clicker trained too and, I must admit, I rock at it!! You can count me in with any training where food is involved. I’m always eager to learn new things. Brains AND looks?!? Just look at me!! I’m a pretty handsome fella. I’m friendly and social with everyone I meet but, I’ll be honest, I’m not really comfortable around young kids. Guess I just prefer a more mature crowd. Come out for a visit and you’ll see that you can’t go wrong with a staff favorite like me. My adoption fee has been sponsored by a generous friend of BHS.

KIARA: Hi everyone, I’m Kiara, a sweet gal looking for my forever home. I like meeting new people who will give me attention, like belly rubs. Sometimes I like to get my zoomies and show my energetic side but a lot of the time I enjoy laying on my comfy dog bed or would love to sit on the sofa with my new family and watch TV. I think I would make a great and loyal companion for anyone who needs a four legged friend. In my previous home I lived with young kids and 3 other dogsone of those dogs is my mom, Nala, who is also here at BHS searching for her forever home. I really hope to see you soon. I walk well on a leash so maybe you can visit with me and go for a long walk.

JENNY: If you are looking for a loving, kind easy going puppy with a beautiful soul then Jenny is the one! She will melt your heart at first sight! Jenny does have a disability, but she has adjusted well to her surroundings at her foster home the past 3 months. Jenny has a birth defect in her sacrum which is a part of her spine where nerves are located that make an animal walk. This deformity does not slow her down. She does walk with a waddle and cannot walk up and down steps at this time, but she does try! She will need a family willing to adapt to her disability and provide a little more extra care than a puppy without her type of disability. Jenny will be in her foster home until she is adopted. Her foster Mom is available to answer any questions you may have, if you are interested in visiting her, email our Adoption Center at animalcenter@bmorehumane.org.

TYSON: Tyson here and I’m a sweet guy in need of a happy and loving forever home. I’m a low key, laidback boy who loves attention. I especially love curling up on the sofa for some snuggles and kisses. I’m quite the love bug. I enjoy playing with toys, running in the sunshine, and meeting new people. I’ve even been to visit the long term care residents at a local long term care facility. So if you adopt me, you can count on having a gentle, compassionate companion. Hope to meet you soon!

BY JOYCE ELAINE

DIARY OF A BIKER CHIC

Miles Makes Comfort Sunday, December 13, 2015. 65 degrees outside…wait a minute!?! 65 degrees? In December? Yes, that’s right. In fact, it was closer to 70 degrees. It’s Maryland weather and it’s not really a surprise. When I saw that this weekend, the weather was going to be close to 70 for Saturday and Sunday, I was bummed and excited. Bummed, because I knew I wouldn’t be able to do a weekend trip but excited because I knew Sunday was all mine. What made it even better was that it was just warm enough outside to not have to put on the heated gear. Don’t get me wrong, I love my heated gear but I hate wearing it. It’s a pain to attach it all up and part of me feels confined to my bike…not that that’s a bad thing, mind you, but it takes a little bit of that “free feeling” away being attached to something. Plus, I wore my heated gear the weekend before, and my heated glove liners got so hot that they burned my hands. I still have a healing scab on my right hand from one burn that actually blistered up. I guess it’s time for a new pair of heated gloves. I did hop on the bike on Saturday for a little over an hour. I rode up to Pasadena to visit someone. This was a quick trip on route 100 which is actually not a bad highway to be on because there are some nice curves in the road. Sometimes when I go out riding, I want those back, twisty roads that we all love; other times, I want speed. On this particular Saturday I was feeling the need for speed. I’ve noticed something the past couple of months that I’ve never felt before. I finally feel like I’m at one with my bike. I don’t have much fear anymore like I used to have. It only took me eight years to finally feel like I know what the hell I’m doing. I don’t know if that’s a common thing or if other people feel connected right away, but for me, it took me a while. It took many miles and many mess-ups, and a couple of close calls to death to finally be able to get on my bike and know there’s not a road I can’t handle or a situation that I can’t get out of. Because of this new found feeling, I find myself enjoying riding even more so than what I have in the past! Who knew that was even possible!? Thunder Roads®MD-DE-DC-WV

I saw many bikes out on the roads on Saturday but what I also saw was just as many women riders as men riders. Yes, I think us chics are finally catching up to the number of men riders. I didn’t see as many bikes out on Sunday but I still saw a good bit. I wanted to ride somewhere new on Sunday but after trying to find a new destination and failing, I figured that it’s not really about the destination, it’s about the journey. That’s a quote that I’ve been learning a new meaning to as of late, so I just got on my bike and made it up as I went along. Those are the best kind of trips anyway. I went down my usual roads: Tridelphia Mill Road (and the lake there at Patuxent Reservoir Watershed is all dried up), Hall Shop Road, Browns Bridge Road, but I also went down some roads I’ve never been down before. I went down one road that ended up being a private property residence road and had to very carefully get myself turned around in a tight spot… remember earlier when I said there’s not a situation I can’t get myself out of? My point was proven here. I pulled out of there with a smile on my face as I went to find the next road to get lost on as I burned through a full tank of gas! I’m not going to mention, though, the bumble bee that tried to attack me while I was stopped. I felt safe from it in all of my leather so I swatted it away…. wait…a bumble bee in December???? It was on today’s trip that I hit 7,000 miles on my bike! I’ve had this bike for a little over a year and half now and the fact that I have 7,000 miles on it is funny. My old bike that I had for seven years, well I only did a little over 7,000 miles on it. What can I say? I love my new bike and I’m comfortable on it and it’s a great cruiser. Granted, I should have well over 7,000 miles at this point but for someone who is working two jobs and has very little down time, I think that’s pretty good. On the first of January of 2015, I reset my trip odometer to zero. My year total is just about 3,100 miles. My goal for 2016 is to do more miles than that, hopefully double or even triple it. 3,100 miles in one year is nothing and I’m ashamed of myself! My lesson for this entry is practice makes perfect, or in the biker world, miles makes comfort. As always, thanks for taking the time to read my articles, stay safe, and keep cruising!

HOLLY RIVER STATE PARK

A

Tecumseh Falls

At Holly River State Park

lthough not officially winter yet, if Indian Summer was what we experienced in October, then Indian Fall, this December, was in full swing. Temps forecasted in the mid-50s meant a “Go”, even with temps starting out in the low 40s this day. Helping matters, was a 2014 Ultra Classic with RC Xhaust upgrades, that Kevin Horton, GM of Shenandoah Harley Davidson, graciously permitted us to ride for this journey. We met our friend, Henry Jordan on his Heritage, at Highs in Monterey for breakfast. It’s been a staging place for many a ride for points west. They have booths full of sharpie graffiti adding to the warm, mom and pop atmosphere. The sausage is really good and they have wifi, which, in a region with very little cell service, is a plus. Our destination was Holly River State Park. Heading west through the Allegheny Mountains, we immediately noticed the abundant torque our machine was pumping out. All I had to do was breathe on the throttle and the RCs would come to life, making easy work of the uphill grades. Passing the continental divide and heading down the Mississippi side of the mountain, I detected a slight noise, building abruptly into a bombastic, deafening SKEEAAAOOWW, that completely muted everything else, including the engine and Geddy’s shrills pumping out of the audio system. I couldn’t see it, but after a brief heart attack, I realized it was a military jet practicing maneuvers. Once down in the valley, it made a couple more passes and I was able to see the F16 banking in the mostly clear sky. Passing through Cass, we were abruptly met by a flagman, stopping us for road work. There were some trees being cut, so we had a minute to chat and find out Happy Road Crew what was going on in Member Smiling for the area. While great the Camera for motorcycling, the weather wasn’t really cooperating for Snowshoe, the local ski resort. He got on his radio to find out how much longer it would be. I joked for

ROAD CAPTAIN’S REPORT

Heading West Through the Allegheneys him to ask the pace truck to bring beer, which he obligingly transmitted. One of the road crew must have heard it, because he was all smiles when we passed by. We finally reached some dry pavement emerging onto 219. The riding became much more Rt 219 enjoyable after being able to lean the bike into the corners. Rts 15 and 20 were very reminiscent of the BRPW in spots, only with 55 mph speed limits and trucks, which we got stuck behind for a few miles. Fortunately, it pulled over and let us by, allowing us to catch another riding buzz before heading into Webster Springs. This is somewhere that I would recommend stopping at, as Henry pointed out later in the ride. While there are gas stations in the area, they are very far apart and many don’t carry high test, which our bikes required. When we got to the park, the gate to our primary destination was closed, and that meant no rest rooms either. I opted instead, for what I thought would be a short hike to Tecumseh Falls. According to the scale, it looked like it was only going to be a mile, so we set off with everything but our outer jackets. Once fully invested, having crossed Big Run Creek three times successfully, there was no turning back. We eventually made it to the confluence where it would be a little bit further, but it

Rose Under the Falls was mostly uphill and we were already sweating. We finally arrived about an hour after we started. It wouldn’t have been that bad, had we stowed more gear. A hike in the woods is always a brief time stopper, or place like Neil Peart once alluded, where we can be immortal for a limited time. It’s always a rewarding feeling to actually see a place not many get to, other than pictures. And even though the falls were just a trickle, the setting was extraordinary. We were able to walk beneath the rock behind the water. Adding to the experience, we guessed at how much weight was above just waiting for the right vibration to eventually collapse. We got the obligatory pics as the afternoon December sun was starting its own journey, hovering above the bare trees on its way to the horizon. We look forward to returning to check out the park’s other waterfalls. By the time we got back to our bikes, it was after 3 PM. Everyone was in need of a bathroom, so we made quick work of the dozen or so miles of Rt. 20 to the nearest watering hole, where we found coffee, wings and burgers, to fuel us up for the long ride home. Rose tortured us by getting a beer. I joked that the pics had better be clear:) Close to home on Nauti, might have made better use of the tap, but three hours to go, through mountains in the dark, on a loaner, solidified a suds free decision. We eventually found 92 octane in Buckhannon. I set the cruise on 70 and by the time we got to Elkins, it was dark. The LED lights made the next 80 miles in the hills much easier, while the RCs kept the wildlife in the woods and off the road. We said our goodbyes in Monterey, each agreeing to text or message when we got home. They say, the only difference between an adventure and an ordeal, is attitude. Although we didn’t encounter, what we intended to seek out, and the journey and the adventure pushed us out of our comfort zone. At the end of it all, I realized that it was just another Heading Home chapter where life begins. It truly was an adventure, and one I’d do again. The term, “take a hike”, sounds so cliche, and sometimes demeaning, but I can assure anyone, that I look forward to the next one. Cheers and thanks for reading!

Delaware Biker Chicks Run and Photo Shoot, October 11, 2015

M

otorcycling means many things to those who participate in the sport and understand. To most it is an in your face expression of independence and rugged individualism, mixed in with rebelliousness and even a little danger. Since the invention of the motorcycle this has had massive appeal to us guys, as a macho manifestation of freedom, a way to thumb our nose at the everyday mundane life of work, family, and daily drudgery. But the times they are a changin’! Over the last decade women have become a huge segment of the motorcycling equation, with more and more of them finding that expression of independence and power appealing. I work in the HD dealership system and I see it happening daily as women are coming into the shop in record numbers to take classes to learn how to ride and to purchase motorcycles. By every method of tracking women are by far the fastest growing segment of the of motorcycle ownership demographic, accounting for nearly one in five motorcycles purchased in this country. Whether they have been long time riders behind husbands or boyfriends, or relative neophytes just getting into the two wheeled game, the numbers of those who have decided to grab the proverbial bull by the horns has swelled dramatically. Women who ride do so for the same reasons we men embrace motorcycling; the exhilaration of the ride, the feeling of unadulterated freedom that comes from piloting a roaring two wheeled hunk of chrome and iron towards an unknown horizon and the camaraderie of being among individuals who share a common love of all that being a motorcycle rider entails. Which brings us to the story at hand, about a woman, with an idea, which like most, started modestly with little fanfare and morphed into an event that most of the participants have hailed as the ultimate experience in their riding lives....so far. The mastermind and ringleader of this event is a long time motorcycle

enthusiast by the name of Cammy Jamison, a well-known and respected realtor in Delaware. She has been riding nearly thirty years, starting out like most on dirt bikes and quickly graduating to street machines. This woman was riding motorcycles on her own when it was quite a novelty to see a female piloting her own street bike, when most ‘biker babes’ were found relegated to the back seats on their ‘old mans’ bike. A pioneer of the latter day ladies motorcycle movement if you will! I will let Cammy’s own words tell the story of how this epic ride and photo shoot came to fruition... “After seeing a picture of some ‘models’ on motorcycles in a popular women’s magazine’ I remarked on a Facebook post to my many female riding friends that “We can do better than that Girls, we are REAL lady bikers!” From this came a brainstorm to plan a ‘small’ gathering of some of my lady biker friends and have my husband shoot some pictures of us at my favorite park in Delaware, Brandywine Creek State park. I put it out Facebook to see who might be interested and..... WOW....it turned into something I never would have imagined, 22 Lady Riders, 20 Lady passengers, two photographers at two locations, including the park and a winery and Thunder Roads® MD-DE-DC-WV on board to do a piece on us!” As word spread among the riding community of the planned Delaware Biker Chicks Run and Photo shoot, enthusiasm and excitement built, with women from all over the state clamoring to be part of this awesome and historic event. Seeing two, three or even four ladies riding together is, in this day and age, a fairly common sight, but the prospect of 22 beautiful, intelligent, accomplished women roaring across the landscape on their own bikes stoked the fires of enthusiasm to an almost inferno pitch. Plans were made, meetings were had, locations were found and schedules coordinated to make this event a reality.

22 JANUARY 2016

Thunder Roads®MD-DE-DC-WV

The participants in this happening run the gamut of life and motorcycling experience. We have white collar to blue collar, executives and entrepreneurs, caregivers and mothers and in some cases even grandmothers. Their occupations are as varied as the motorcycles they ride. A real estate professional, a prestigious salon owner, a logistics specialist and a daycare owner/operator. Account executives and department administrators to a care manager and private nanny. There is even a professional diamond cutter in the mix! Some of these women have been riding for decades while others have only been riding a relatively short time in comparison but they all share the one thing that unites them, and so many of the rest of us. The feeling of freedom and sense of adventure that can only be found from the seat of a motorcycle Cammy herself has been riding for nearly thirty years, as have Kathy and Kellie while Beverly, Sheri, Ginger and others have only started riding their own in the last 5-10 years after riding as passengers. And as it should be, the ‘old hands’ have welcomed and embraced the newcomers as their sisters in the wind, sharing their love of riding and the friendship that comes with it. As the day of the shoot dawned sunny and clear, a picture perfect Autumn day, these Delaware Biker Chicks met at the Boston Market in Prices Corner, DE to stage for the ride with great anticipation for the days upcoming events. Twenty riders, twenty women riders, led by Cammy, Kellie, Sheri and Beverly, with Kellie handling the blocking duties like a boss, thundered out onto Kirkwood Hwy. to begin the journey to the first location of the day, Brandywine Creek State Park where they were to meet the other two biker babes and 20 other women who were back seat riders to commence the photo shoot. They were joined at the park by the two photographers, Ray Jackson a talented local Delaware photographer and Cammy’s husband, Bob Jamison, in my estimation, two extremely lucky guys! In a strange yet fortuitous coincidence there were exactly 22 women who rode their own bikes to the shoot and Rhino, the publisher of the local edition of Thunder Roads® MD-DE-DC-WV has been active in promoting the Project 22 Initiative in support of veterans and PTSD issues. The Delaware Biker Chicks wholeheartedly agreed to help promote this cause in some of the pictures taken. The significance of the 22 is that it is the number of veterans suicides that happen daily in this country and the cause aims to reach out to at risk veterans suffering from PTSD to offer counseling and a sympathetic ear. Our vets deserve this, and so much more for defending our freedoms and way of life from those who would see it destroyed. After a 90 minute photo session at the park the Lady Bikers fired up their bikes for the 30 mile ride to the next location, Rizzo’s Winery in New Castle, Delaware causing quite a few heads to turn at the sight of their parade of Motorcycle Girl Power. Upon arrival they were greeted by the proprietor, Tony Rizzo who provided complimentary food and

Thunder Roads®MD-DE-DC-WV

drinks for the hungry and thirsty riders. After the eating and drinking were done, poses were once again struck as the cameras clicked, capturing the beauty of these women and their machines. You must imagine that 40 plus women at a photo shoot after a little wine are going to require some sort of adult supervision and these duties were admirably handled by the honorary Sgt. at Arms Teresa ‘Reds’ Worley. After nearly two more hours of camera action it was the end of what every single woman involved characterized as one of the best days they ever spent on a motorcycle This event, started for fun was also about these women giving back to many good causes and charitable organizations in which they believe. The hat was passed around and $250.00 was donated to the Rizzo Winery to be used for their charity of choice but in a very magnanimous gesture Mr. Rizzo insisted that the money be donated to whatever charity the Biker Babes thought best. The beneficiary was the Look Good, Feel Better Program at the Helen F. Graham Center. This program provides wigs, make up and other beauty supplies to women who are battling various forms of cancer. Another member of the group, Kathy Ferguson, a cancer survivor herself, donated $400.00 to Biker Babes for Boobies on behalf of the Delaware Biker Chicks in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. And by no means are these the only two charities who benefit from the efforts of these proud and wonderful women. They support many diverse causes with their time, effort and money. The ALS Foundation, Domestic Violence Advocacy, American Cancer Society, B.A.C.A., ABATE of New Castle County, Toys for Tots and Project 22 to name just a few. Caring hearts, each and every one of them. By all accounts a fantastic time was had by all at this epic event, sharing sisterhood and fun, and a little wine! Cammy wishes to send a heartfelt thanks to each and every Biker Chick who made this a wonderful, memorable and extraordinary event. She couldn’t have pulled it off without you. Special thanks go out to Beverly Ross, Kellie ‘Pinks’ Glynn, Sheri Canale and Rachel Craig for their tireless efforts in organizing the event. Many thanks to the photographers who captured the spirit of these women and their rides and lastly but not least to Rhino, the publisher of Thunder Roads® MD-DE-DC-WV for bringing this event to life on the pages of his magazine. Finally, I would like to graciously thank Cammy Jamison and all the Delaware Biker Chicks for their faith and patience in allowing me to tell their story. Ride Free! Building the A to Z Bike Pop pop bike turned into road dragging custom bagger without breaking the bank.

J

ohn Cornwell, owner of A to Z Cycles in Dover, DE, built this bike in 2013 after selling his other custom. He wanted something unique that would represent his personality and his business. John has owned everything from a stretched sportster chopper to a Road King turned into a Street Glide. For this build, he wanted something a little different. He looked towards the ‘shark nose’ fixed fairing Road Glide to be the start of his new custom. The foundation for the build came in the form of a 2003 100th Anniversary Road Glide with a 95 ci kit and cams already installed and just about every stick-on chrome accessory offered. This bike was quickly nicknamed the ‘Pop-Pop’ bike for its stock looks, but it needed a total facelift to match the engine work that had already been done. By the time John would be finished with it, no one would be able to guess it had 45,000 miles to its name. The first step John took in the process of the build was choosing a direction for this bike. He had already done the chopper trend, he had challenged

himself with turning a Road King into a Street Glide, and now it was time for something totally new. At the time of the build, the bagger trend was really starting to heat up. West Coast trends had finally made their way to the East, giving us the long, stretched show baggers. While these bikes are typically unique and look great, they often lack handling and aren’t the most comfortable ride. John wanted to incorporate this style while maintaining rideability. The next step was deciding how far to take the build. Owning a motorcycle shop means that with the right amount of money, John could’ve easily produced a cookie cutter show bike. But he demanded something unique and made just for him. Once the bike was torn down, the parts that didn’t match the build were listed on eBay to help pay for the changes. He decided to pick some pieces to keep stock, some to customize on his own and some aftermarket parts to match. The bike came with a chrome front end kit and the inner and outer fairing and gas tank are stock with custom paint (custom paint job courtesy of 251customs, a local painter); but that’s

28 JANUARY 2016

where the list of stock parts ends and the lengthy list of modifications begins. The saddlebag lids are stock with a set of Kenwood speakers installed. To keep in line with the black and white look, John chose to tone down some of the chrome by powder coating some of the pieces (done by local powdercoater; Thermacoat). John opted for some Harley Davidson accessory pieces, such as the front wheel and air cleaner. He even used some pieces taken from other Harley models: the floorboards and risers are from a Softail, the rear wheel and custom saddlebag brackets were taken from a 2009 Street Glide and the fairing lowers are from a 2005 Thunder Roads®MD-DE-DC-WV

Electra Glide which were modified to fit around the fairing. The stock saddlebags were stretched with the Klockwerks 4” extension kit. Think you can get that rear fender? Nope! Its two Street Glide rear fenders welded together! The frame was pretty much left alone with the exception of making the rear half wider to accommodate the larger fender. The front fender you can have though; it came courtesy of Russ Wernimont Designs. Fork bells and saddlebag latches are Arlen Ness, the Handlebars came from Todd Cycles and the incredibly comfortable seat is from Drag Specialties. The beautifully designed gauges came from our awesome friends at Dakota Digital. A set of Legends Air Ride FLH Aeros were the final addition to make this custom more comfortable and give it a Thunder Roads®MD-DE-DC-WV

low stance. Once the bike was together, John ran it through the gears in less than 10 miles then loaded it in the trailer to head to Laconia Bike Week in New Hampshire. Talk about a stress test! (which it passed!) At the event, he had the bike dyno’d and tuned by the guys at Speeds Performance Plus – getting 100 horsepower out of it! John says that the adrenaline rush of reaching peak performance with your ride plus knowing the bike inside and out is the greatest feeling in the world. He has some future plans to take this ride to the next level but would also like to start new with another build soon. His goal is to eventually have one bike for every day of the week; who wouldn’t want that! 29

TECH TIP:End Play Playa

T

By James Gilman, Love Lust Cycles

his month we will be servicing a 99’ and earlier style wheel bearing. This like many other aspects of pre2000 motorcycle service is all too commonly over looked, neglected, and done improperly. Wheel bearings are one of the most vital parts of a motorcycle that could mean the difference between life and death. For those of you who have never had a wheel bearing fail, congratulations! It is an experience we hope nobody has to endure.

AN AIR HOSE CAUSING THE BEARING TO SPIN** This actually damages the bearing . After all parts have been properly cleaned, inspect all parts for any sign of wear, corrosion, rust, and damage.

Harley Davidson switched to a sealed wheel bearing starting in the 2000 model year except for the front wheel on Springer models. Some of the tall tell signs your wheel bearing needs to be serviced or replaced would be a loose, wondering feeling while riding the motorcycle or a tight sluggish feeling pushing the motorcycle. The following is a brief over view of what this service entails. The first step is to remove the wheel bearing from the wheel hub. This step requires the use of a seal puller. Some people will use a big flat head screw driver or something hokey like that. Just like any other job this step requires the proper tool.

While removing the wheel seal it’s nice to go the extra step and put a folded up rag in between the puller and wheel hub to avoid scratches. It is important never to mix up the bearings. They are matched to the races. The bearing that comes out of the rotor side of the hub has to be reinstalled to rotor side of the hub. The bearing removed from the opposite bearing needs to be reinstalled to the opposite side.

Here is what should come out the wheel hub; 2 bearings, the inner spacer, and the bearing shims. It is very important before proceeding to thoroughly clean the bearings, spacer, hub, inner races, and shims. Any remnants of the old grease will give a false reading while checking and setting the end play. We recommend contact cleaner to remove the old grease and debris. **NEVER UNDER ANY CIRCUSTANCES HOLD CENTER OF THE WHEEL BEARING AND BLOW DRY IT WITH

The following steps requires the use of a known good axel, a bench vice, veneer calipers, a dial indicator with magnetic base or clamp mount and the knowledge to read these measuring devices. Clamp the axel in the vice and install a wheel spacer and then the non-rotor side bearing on the axel. Next install the inner spacer on the axel. Install wheel onto the axel, followed by the bearing shims then the stepped shim with the smaller part facing the bearing. It is important to always install this stepped shim between the shims and the bearing, and then install the rotor side bearing. We install these parts in this order as we use the rotor to mount our magnetic base of the dial indicator to. As a side note the wheel shims always get installed on the rotor side of the wheel whether it be a front wheel or a rear wheel.

After all the wheel parts have been installed on the axel, install a wheel spacer that contacts the bearing and is long enough to exceed where the axel nut threads stop. This is necessary because if the spacer was shorter, when you torque the axel nut it would not have a proper clamp load on the bearings. Now tighten the axel nut with a standard wrench previous to torqueing. Never use your torque wrench as a regular wrench.

36 JANUARY 2016

Thunder Roads®MD-DE-DC-WV

It is important to snug all fasteners prior to using the torque. Misuse of the torque wrench will ultimately expedite the diminishing the calibration of your torqueing apparatus. Harley Davidson wheels require a torque 55 ft lbs to perform this procedure. After eh axel has been torque install the dial indicator. We here at Love Lust Cycles always have our customer vehicles in mind and installed painters tape on the rotor so we do not scratch it when we go to install the magnetic base of the dial indicator.

shims give a greater end play and less shim give less end play. After the end play has been properly set grease bearings thoroughly with a bearing packer and Harley Davidson wheel bearing grease. We recommend and use this grease simply because it is the proper grease for the wheel bearings. We also apply grease to the lip of the seal previous to installing it.

With the dial indicator installed on the rotor, adjust it so the end of the indicator is placed on the end of the axel with the indicator as vertical as possible. If it is not vertical you will get a false reading on the indicator. The reason we set the dial indicator up this way is because we move the wheel up and down and the axel stays stationary causing all movement to be measured.

Set the indicator at 0 and grab the wheel and pull it up to measure the movement. This is your current end play. The Harley Davidson specs for wheel bearing end play is .002” to .006”. If the measurement is not within spec, remove the components down to the inner spacer then measure the shims without the stepped shim and adjust them accordingly. It is important to not have any more or any less than this spec. If it is out of this spec it could cause severe damage in both directions. Little to no end play can cause the bearing to seize and the wheel to lock up which will ultimately cause a catastrophic event. If the end play is too loose the wheel can move uncontrollably and cause the rider to lose control of the motorcycle and again have a catastrophic ending. Remember you are on two wheel not four Playas. Don’t mess around with this shit. The bearing/wheel shims are available in multiple thicknesses. This is where your veneer calipers come into play. You will need to measure the existing shims and the new shims if the bearings require adjustment. While adjusting the wheel end play remember that more Thunder Roads®MD-DE-DC-WV

This is a critical procedure to perform and should not by any circumstances be performed by an untrained professional. Wrecking ain’t cool, dying sucks even more Playas. This month’s reader question comes to us from West Virginia from someone who wishes to remain anonymous as they fear embarrassment asking us “Should I run a different tire pressure in the winter versus summer?” Thanks Playa and by the way there is no such thing as an incompetent question only incompetent answers. To answer your question no, you run the same tire pressure all year round and install the manufacturers recommended tire pressure. It is important to check and install the pressure with a cold tire. Cold meaning the bike has not been ridden in several hours as the pressure increases as the tire temperature increases from riding it. Got a tech tip question for James? Part 5

War Machines The importance of the motorcycle in The Great War is often overlooked, although the motorcycle was one of the most prolific tools in the Allied arsenal. Messengers on horseback were replaced by riders on motorcycles, and quickly became the most reliable source of communication in battle. Communications technology was highly unreliable during WWI, and based on the virtue of speed alone, motorcycles became the best way for the military to transfer orders, reports, and maps between units. Now, I know what you’re thinking…Riding is dangerous enough on any given day, so who the hell wants to do it in the middle of full blown combat? I have to admit, at first thought the motorcycle seems like an unlikely choice for combat equipment. It lacks armor, leaving the operator totally exposed and it can be quite easily damaged. But sometimes what is needed in battle is speed and agility…and the nimble motorcycle was irreplaceable on the battlefield. Imagine the kahones on those guys (or maybe they were just nuts in general), but whatever the reasoning behind the action, riding through shot and shell to secure victory is pretty damn impressive to me. Motorcycles were used for more than just messaging in WWI. The versatility of these machines clearly helped them play a hugely significant role in the logistics of war… even more so than cars. In addition to dispatch and courier duties they were used for reconnaissance and patrol, as ammunition and medical supply carriers, and for casualty evacuation. They also modified motorcycles to act as field ambulances, as well as mounting machine guns to sidecars for combat. When the US entered WWI, we brought motorcycles from several US companies to help on the front lines. The bulk of motorcycles came from Indian and Harley Davidson, but motorcycles produced by Excelsior, Henderson, and others also made it into battle in Europe. So what does all of this do to the motorcycle industry? Let’s take a look at three key players from the start of the production era, and where they end up at the end of WWI. Harley Davison introduced the first side car in 1914, followed by a brief return to the use of chain versus belt driven motorcycles to help combat the problems associated with using leather belts. (The slippage, stretching, and rotting of leather belts was unacceptable

to the manufacturer.) Some of these models were briefly available with a two speed transmission in the rear hub. In 1915, Harley introduced the three speed sliding gear transmission with the final and primary drive on the same side. By 1917, one third of Harley Davidson production is purchased by the US Army. 1917 also brought about the creation of Harley’s Quartermaster School, designed to train Army mechanics, the school was retained after the war as the Service School; providing factory trained mechanics for Harley Davidson dealerships. By 1918 almost half of all Harley Davidson motorcycles are sold for use by the US military, with a total of 20,000 motorcycles produced for the troops in WWI. After Armistice was signed, Corporal Roy Holtz became the first American soldier to enter Germany, and he did so, on a Harley. During the war, Indian Motorcycles were continuing

38 JANUARY 2016

Thunder Roads®MD-DE-DC-WV

to grow. By 1914, Indian had over 3,000 employees working on a seven mile long assembly line in its Springfield, Massachusetts plant. This same year, Indian debuts the world’s first motorcycle with electric lights and starter. By 1916, Indian has also introduced the 61 cubic inch Powerplus side valve engine. In 1918, Indian improves upon this by introducing the overhead cam, 4 valve per cylinder Powerplus model. By the end of the war, Indian had supported the war effort with an incredible 41,000 machines. Despite its strong connection to Germany, Triumph takes its place in WWI history on the Allied side. How’s that for an uncomfortable partnership? In 1914, Triumph was chosen by Colonel Claude Holbrook to supply the Type H motorcycle for Allied military service. The Type H was the first motorcycle produced by Triumph without pedals, the first “true motorcycle” for the company. The Type H originally had a belt driven rear wheel and a 499 cc air cooled 4 stroke single cylinder engine. The re-vamped model H, in particular, was regarded by many as having been the first “modern motorcycle” introduced in 1915; it had a 550 cc side valve 4 stroke engine with a 3 speed gear box and belt transmission. It was so popular that it gained the nickname “Trusty Triumph”. Triumph would eventually contribute 30,000 motorcycles to the military over the course of WWI. The versatility of motorcycles clearly helped them to play a significant role in the logistics of WWI…even more so than cars. Motorcycles were integral in the success of the Allied troops, and turned a relatively new and underdeveloped industry into a world-wide phenomenon. Next time we will take a look at post war motorcycle history, and how the Great Depression turned motorcycle production into a sink or swim industry. Melanie Schwarte Melanie@thunderroadsiowa.com

Santa: Every year, alll I ask for is a big fat bank account and a slim body. Yet again this year you mixed the two up, like you’ve done ever since I was 40 years old. Are you drinking too much of the Elves “special” Eggnog or what? A woman goes into the Bass Pro Shop to buy a rod and reel for her grandson’s birthday. She doesn’t know which one to get so she just grabs one and goes over to the counter. A Bass Pro Shop associate is standing there wearing dark shades. She says, “Excuse me, sir. Can you tell me anything about this rod and reel?” He says, “Ma’am, I’m completely blind; but if you’ll drop it on the counter, I can tell you everything from the sound it makes.” She doesn’t believe him but drops it on the counter anyway. He says, “That’s a six-foot Shakespeare graphite rod with a Zebco 404 reel and 10-LB. test line. It’s a good all-around combination and it’s on sale this week for only $40.00.” She says, “It’s amazing that you can tell all that just by the sound of it dropping on the counter. I’ll take it!” As she opens her purse, her credit card drops on the floor. Oh, that sounds like a Master Card,” he says. She bends down to pick it up and accidentally farts. At first she is really embarrassed, but then realizes there is no way the blind clerk could tell it was she who tooted. Being blind, he wouldn’t know that she was the only person around. The man rings up the sale and says, “That’ll be $54.50 please.” The woman is totally confused by this and asks, “Didn’t you tell me the rod and reel were on sale for $40.00? How did you get $54.50?” He replies, “Yes, Ma’am. The rod and reel is $40.00, but the Duck Call is $11.00 and the Bear Repellent is $3.50.” Little Becky was gifted a parrot that cussed like a drunken sailor. Tried as she might, she could not get the parrot to stop cussing so raunchy and acting out. Finally, after an all-day fight and lecture to the bird, Becky, in desperation, threw up her hands, grabbed the bird and stuck him in the freezer. For a few minutes the parrot squawked and kicked on the door. Then, suddenly there was total silence.Fearing that she’d hurt the parrot, Becky quickly opened the door to the freezer. The parrot calmly stepped out onto her outstretched arm and said “I believe I may have offended you with my rude language and actions. I’m sincerely remorseful for my “tude” and promise to be a good bird. Also, may I be so bold as to inquire what the turkey did wrong?

On the morning that Daylight Savings Time ended I stopped in to visit my aging friend, Bolo. He was busy covering his penis with black shoe polish. I said to him, “You better get your hearing checked buddy ...... You’re supposed to turn your clock back”. For the New Year, please note that condom makers do not guarantee “Safe Sex” by even a percentage anymore. Case in fact, a friend of mine was wearing one when he was shot 5 times by the woman’s husband that he was humping. A man wakes up in the hospital bandaged from head to foot. The doctor comes in and says, “Ah, I see you’ve regained consciousness. Now, you probably won’t remember, but you were in a huge pile-up on the freeway. You’re going to be okay, you’ll walk again and everything, however, your penis was severed in the accident and we couldn’t find it.” The man groans, but the doctor goes on, “You have $9000 in insurance compensation coming and we now have the technology to build a new penis. They work great but they don’t come cheap. It’s roughly $1000 an inch.” So, the doctor says, “You must decide how many inches you want. But understand that you have been married for over thirty years and this is something you should discuss with your wife. If you had a five incher before and get a nine incher now she might be a bit overwhelmed. If you had a nine incher before and you decide to only invest in a five incher now, she might be disappointed. It’s important that she plays a role in helping you make a decision.” The man agrees to talk it over with his wife. The doctor comes back the next day, “So, have you spoken with your wife?” “Yes I have,” says the man. “And has she helped you reach a decision?” “Yes” says the man. “What is your decision?” asks the doctor. “We’re getting granite counter tops.” Someone broke into my house last week. They didn’t take my TV, just the remote. Now they drive by and change the channels. Sick bastards!!! The Doctor asked a pregnant prostitute, “Do you know who the father is?” She promptly replied, “Hey, Doctor dumb ass, if you ate a can of beans would you know which one made you fart?!”

NCOM BIKER NEWSBYTES Compiled & Edited by Bill Bish, National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM) HIGHWAY BILL SIGNED INTO LAW Passed by the House 359-65 on Thursday afternoon, December 3rd, and approved by the Senate 83-16 later that same day, a long-awaited long-term highway funding bill has been signed into law by President Barack Obama, marking big gains for the nation’s infrastructure and America’s motorcyclists, among others. Overwhelmingly approved by Congress a day before current funding expired, the 1,300-page five-year $305 billion measure increases federal money for transportation infrastructure projects around the country, addressing our aging and congested highways and bridges after years of stymied efforts. The legislation, dubbed “Fixing America’s Surface Transportation (FAST) Act”, takes effect immediately and represents a 25% increase in federal funds committed to surface transportation infrastructure. In addition, the good news for motorcyclists is that the new Highway Bill prohibits the Department of Transportation from awarding grants to local and state governments for motorcycle-only checkpoint programs, effectively preventing such discriminatory roadblocks; Reinstates the Motorcycle Advisory Council (MAC) to advise the federal government on infrastructure issues of concern to motorcyclists; Funds motorcycle safety grants and distracted driving programs, and makes it easier for states to qualify; Establishes privacy and security measures in infrastructure technologies and data retrieval; and Continues funding for off-highway recreation. FEDS INCREASE ETHANOL LEVELS The federal government has substantially increased the mandated amount of ethanol to be used in America’s gasoline next year, from 16.93 billion gallons in 2015 to 18.11 billion gallons in 2016, harkening widespread availability of higher-ethanol fuel blends, such as E15, which can damage motorcycle engines and void manufacturer warranties. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced the increase as part of the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS), which mandates the volume of renewable fuels that must be blended into the nation’s fuel supply each year. E15, which is a fuel blend of 15% ethanol, has not been approved by the EPA for use in any of the estimated 22 million motorcycles and ATVs in the U.S., and Congress has considered measures calling for further study of Thunder Roads®MD-DE-DC-WV

ethanol and its effect on internal combustion engines. 11/1/11 5:06 PM Meanwhile, many motorcycle and automobile organizations, among others, continue to lobby against ethanol, not just because its unapproved use can damage fuel systems and internal engine parts, reduce power and mileage, and invalidate warranties, but opponents also argue that ethanol pollutes more than the oil it’s meant to replace, takes more energy to produce than it delivers, drives up cost and scarcity of food resources, doesn’t reduce our oil-dependency, and the government subsidies being paid for ethanol production diverts funds that could improve our highways, bridges and infrastructure. HONDA AND BMW PLEDGE TO ADDRESS GLOBAL WARMING As 150 Heads of State and Government convened in Paris, France at the 21st Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, with a goal to “reach a new universal climate agreement that is applicable to all,” the hope is that some arrangement can be reached to help reduce carbon emissions worldwide and keep global warming from exceeding a two degree Celsius rise in the coming years. Emissions legislation and the transition to cleaner energy, both of which are included as strategies toward curbing climate change, have obvious impacts on the motorcycle industry. Europe, for example, has set some of the most stringent emissions standards on motorcycles with further restrictions forthcoming. Further changes are likely to be seen in the U.S. as well, in part because of the pledges two motorcycle companies have made in accord with strategies outlined by the White House in Paris. American Honda Motor Company and the BMW Group are now involved in efforts to address global warming, both companies signing the American Business Act on Climate Pledge. In a press release issued November 30, 2015, by the White House, 154 companies are cited as having signed the pledge, each offering companyspecific strategies to combat climate change. American Honda and BMW are currently the only two motorcycle OEMs to sign the following pledge: “We applaud the growing number of countries that have already set ambitious targets for climate action. In this context, we support the conclusion of a climate change agreement in Paris that takes a strong step forward toward a low-carbon, sustainable future. We recognize that delaying action on climate change will be costly in economic and human terms, while accelerating the transition to a low-carbon economy will produce multiple benefits with regard to sustainable economic growth, public health, resilience to natural disasters, and the health of the global environment.” QUOTABLE QUOTE: “There’s really no such thing as the ‘voiceless’. There are only the deliberately silenced or the preferably unheard.” Suzanna Arundhati Roy (b. 24 Nov 1961, India) political activist and author
