The Miracle of Spring (John 3:1-3) There was a man named Nicodemus, one of the Pharisees. He was an important Jewish leader. One night he came to Jesus and said, “Teacher, we know that you are a teacher sent from God. No one can do these miraculous signs that you do unless they have God’s help.” Jesus answered, “I assure you, everyone must be born again. Anyone who is not born again cannot be in God’s kingdom.” Have you ever contemplated the Miracle of Spring? If like most of us the answer would be no. yet the New Birth of life in the spring is nothing but a miracle. It is something that happens every year without fail. The Miracle of Spring is not any different than the New Birth and regeneration of your heart. Don’t overlook the significance of the Spring time. As insignificant as it may seem to some, The Miracle of Spring makes a huge impact in our lives. Sometimes “small miracles” can have tremendous impact. A physical healing is a dramatic and unarguably miraculous event. But so is an unheralded

6

change of heart. There is just such a miracle in the story of Peter recorded in Acts chapter nine. We are told that Peter, a Jew, was staying in the home of a Gentile man named Simon. And Simon was, by profession, a tanner! Tanners handled the hides of dead animals, and were considered unclean by Jewish rabbis. But God was beginning to change Peter’s heart, and would soon show him that the Gospel was (and is!) for everyone… not just for good, law-abiding Jews. Peter’s “sleepover” at Simon’s home might seem insignificant…but it was a micro-movement toward a larger goal: the opening of the door of salvation to the Gentiles.

A huge transition was taking place, one small miracle at a time. God can—and does—work in dramatic ways. But He also works in ways that are very nearly invisible until the work is done. If you have experienced a slow change of heart like Peter’s, you know this. Don’t make the mistake of thinking you have never witnessed a miracle because nothing has happened in your life that would make the nightly news. God’s small miracle in Peter’s life became the means by which every non-Jew since has come to know Jesus Christ as Savior. Even me.

THE HISTORY OF ROYAL ENFLEID MOTORCYCLES BY ANDY TALLONE

WORLD WAR I & AFTER

Classic-British-Motorcycles.com

WWI brought rich contracts from both the British War Department and Imperial Russia for three different models: a 225cc two-stroke; a 425cc V-twin; and an 8hp sidecar rig with a Vickers machine gun mounted on it. With the end of the war, Royal Enfield concentrated on the civilian market with a new 976cc V-twin in 1921 and their first 4-stroke single, albeit with a JAP 350cc engine. In 1928, they added a saddle tank and center-sprung girder front fork, state-ofthe-art for the day, and Royal Enfield was one of the first to adopt it.

The “Flying Flea” was meant to parachute in with British troops.

BIKES FOR WORLD WAR II

THE EARLY DAYS

Royal Enfield Motorcycles were never a big-seller among Classic British Motorcycles, but they were known be fast, rugged, and often unique and interesting. Like so many British motorcycle companies at the time, Royal Enfield started out making bicycles in 1893 as the Enfield Manufacturing Company Ltd. By 1899, theyʼd build their first quadracycle with a DeDion engine. They added “Royal” to the Enfield name, and in 1912 they started racing with their Royal Enfield Model 80, powered by a 770cc JAP V-twin, enjoying some success at the Isle of Man TT and Brooklands.

Despite all this, the company was in dire financial straights, barely limping along. In 1931, one of the founders, Albert Eddie died, then just two years later, his parter RW Smith also died. Times were tough, and the Depression had set in, but Royal Enfield Motorcycles managed to keep it going. WWII hit at just the right time and again they were flooded with lucrative government contracts for gobs of military motorcycles. These included a 250cc side-valve (SV), a 350cc SV, two 350cc OHV singles, a 570cc SV single, and the most famous of them all, “The Flying Flea”. The Flea was a lightweight, rugged 125cc two-stroke that could be parachuted in with airborne troops. To avoid bombing by the Luftwaffe, a brand new factory was built underground in Westwood, England, where it was found that the constant temperatures were ideal for making not only motorcycles, but “predictor” detonators for anti-aircraft artillery shells. Dangerous work, that.

Royal Enfleid built sturdy V-twins like this 1930 Model K for sidecar duty. 8

BUILT IN INDIA

After the war, Royal Enfield resumed civilian production with the 350cc OHV Model G single and the 500cc OHV Model J single, both with rigid frames and telescopic forks. In 1948 they unveiled their ground-breaking new swing arm rear suspension, one of the first to do so. By the late 1950s, Royal Enfield was struggling again financially and so sold the non-exclusive licensing and manufacturing rights, and tooling to Madras Motors in India. Madras commenced production of 350cc Royal Enfield Bullets, produced in India, and later expanded to 500cc Bullet production, but never anything more. All Indian-produced Royal Enfields are single-cylinder bikes. Even though the English arm of Royal Enfield is long gone, the Indian arm is still producing bikes to this day, to a huge domestic market within India, a large export market in the developing world, and even to Europe and America, where they are viewed as “retro”. Their basic design has changed little since the 1950s, and they look like it, even though today they have electric starters and fuel injection. This new ‘Indian Enfieldʼ is built in a variety of styles, some mimicking military machines and 1950s classics.

INDIAN ENFIELDS & ENFIELD INDIANS An interesting twist in the Royal Enfield story is how Super Meteor 700cc twins were rebadged as Indian Motorcycles and sold in the US market as the Indian Chief from 1955 to 1960. Interesting story. Indian had itself changed hands during WWII and after the war, the new owners wanted to get out of the heavy V-twin market to embrace the ʻnew waveʼ of parallel twins pouring in from Britain. They had tried unsuccessfully to lobby the US government to impose heavy tariffs and limits on British imports. When that failed, they decided that if you canʼt beat ‘em, join ‘em. Indian squandered their dwindling resources on trying to build their own vertical twin on the British mold, but failed miserably. In 1953, bankrupt Indian changed hands again and the new owners also happened to be the exclusive US importers for Royal Enfield Motorcycles. Starting in 1955, they painted Royal Enfield Interceptors bright colors, slapped on a huge leather saddle with ‘tasslesʼ, along with garish Indian logos. They gave them appropriate names like ‘Indian Chiefʼ, ‘Tomohawkʼ and ‘Hounds Fire Arrowʼ. Indian Motorcycles had thrown all its eggs into the Royal Enfield basket when it ended decades of production of its own V-twin. Unfortunately, the rebadged ‘Enfield Indiansʼ didnʼt do well and so the marketing agreement was cancelled in 1960, at which point Royal Enfield Motorcycles became available in the US under their own name. So, another oddity is that there are then “Enfield Indians” and “Indian Enfields.” continued...

The 750 Interceptor was a fast, robust, handsome machine.

TWINS FROM ENGLAND

At this point, Royal Enfield was still building bikes themselves at their Bradford-on-Avon factory in England. In 1949, they joined the Vertical Twin Race with their own 500cc Royal Enfield Meteor. By 1953, theyʼd punched it out to 700cc (hoping to trump Triumph and BSA who only had 650s) with the Royal Enfield Super Meteor. They punched it out again in 1962 to 750cc with the Royal Enfield Interceptor. The Interceptor was unique among British parallel twins in that it had a center main bearing on the crankshaft, making for a much stronger and smoother engine than those of the other Brits. All the while, they built lots of 18hp 250cc OHV Royal Enfield Crusaders. They also dabbled in two-strokes, like the Villiers-engined 250 Turbo Twin. Nothing seemed to add up to the sales they needed to survive.

From 1955-60 Royal Enfields were rebadges as Indians. Thunder Roads® Mid-Atlantic

APRIL 2017 9

Indian-built Royal Enfields have a very “retro” look, despite electric starters & fuel injection

THE END DRAWS NEAR

By the mid-1960s, the horsepower race was raging, the Japanese were on the march and everyone was pumping up their bikes for more power. Royal Enfield followed suit with its Series I and Series II 750cc Interceptor, now good for a 13-sec quarter mile at 105 mph. The US loved the bike, but cash-strapped Royal Enfield was unable to produce them in large enough volumes quickly enough to meet the demand. That and a reputation for leaking oil (earning them the nickname “Royal Oilfield”) lead to their final slide into

10

insolvency. By 1967, production had stopped, with unsold bikes being retitled all the way out to 1970 and sold as new. The factory was closed for good in 1970, at which time Royal Enfield (the English one, now completely separated from the Indian company) was acquired by Manganese Bronze Holdings and added to the scrap heap that would become NortonVilliers, which would ultimately include Triumph, BSA, Norton, Matchless/AJS, Ariel, James and Francis-Barnett. Nothing much came of it. Royal Enfield was added to the long list of failed British motorcycle companies.

3 CENTURIES OF BIKES

However, Royal Enfield is the only motorcycle company still building bikes who can claim to have done so over a span of 3 centuries! They started in the 1800s, ran though the 1900s, and are still producing bikers in 2017. Not even old-timers Triumph Motorcycles (1902) and Harley-Davidson (1903) can make that claim! DIARY OF A BIKER CHIC

March 13, 2017 Well, we are exactly one week until the first day of Spring…of course, we got mother nature snowing on our parade tonight but I’m going to hope that this is our first and our last significant snow fall for the season. I have to say that it was the perfect winter as I didn’t even have to get the shovel out but it was unfortunate that my bike spent most of its time in the shop. I will say that I’ve put some miles on it in the last month and I’m very happy to report that there have been no leaks! In fact, I just moved the bike yesterday and thought for sure I’d see that dreaded spot of oil on the bottom of my Cycle Shell, but it was as clean as a whistle! I don’t want to toot my horn too early, but TOOT! TOOT! So I’m ready for the warm weather to get here and stay. The only bike event that I have in stone is Gettysburg Bike Week in July. It’s my favorite bike week of them all. I know most people don’t care for that one but I love Gettysburg and look forward to that one every year. With any luck, I will be cutting back on hours at the second job in a few months, so I will have my weekends free, just in time for most of the spring/ summer riding season. I’ve been thinking of where I want to ride to on my free weekends, because, there is nothing else to do but ride when you have two days in a row off. I see many, many day trips to the beach, but I’m also hopeful to get out and ride to some new places, either in Maryland or the surrounding states. I’ve been told I need to ride out to Lancaster, PA, so I’m going to add that one to the list. I’ll do Skyline drive at least once, but I’m hoping to stay overnight in that area to ride the Blue Ridge Parkway as well. I haven’t done that one yet. I’ll probably do a few weekend rides up to West Virginia to visit the parents, even though my mom hates when I ride my bike all the way up there (sorry mom…just close your eyes)! If I get really antsy and can get a few days off, I may ride all the way up to Massachusetts to visit some good friends. A few years ago, I had planned to take a couple of weeks off and tour all the states from Maryland to Massachusetts but life got in the way. Maybe I can finally do that this summer.

an education, get a really good paying job, get married, have some kids, have some grand kids, and then die in a retirement home. That is not my life plan. My plan is to retire when I’m 49 years old (and yes, I will be able to do that), move to some place where it’s warm year around, travel, and ride…and ride in other countries and when I kick the bucket, I won’t do it while sitting in an old folks home! I’ll be sliding my bike into my grave…well, into the crematory because I don’t want to be buried six feet under! That’s my American Dream and as each day passes, I’m getting closer and closer to my dream. So, I ask you, where should I ride to this summer? You can let me know on my “Diary of biker chic” page on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/DiaryofaBikerChic/ Have a safe riding season everyone!

As I get older, I have the urge to get out and visit as many places as I can. It has occurred to me that sitting in a classroom to get a degree to get a better paying job is not the path I want to be on anymore. I can learn much more by getting out and exploring than I can by sitting in a classroom and listening to something I have no desire to listen to. So many people get caught up in the “American Dream:” get Thunder Roads® Mid-Atlantic

• Make yourself visible. Choose riding gear that increases your visibility in traffic in addition to providing protection in the event of a crash. Use bright colors and retro-reflective strips or decals, especially at night. • Ride so you are seen. There is no one safe place to ride. Use lane positioning to be seen. Ride with your headlight on and consider using a modulating headlight. • Give yourself space and time to react. Allow space for emergency braking or for avoiding a crash. Make your lane moves gradually. • Signal your intentions. Signal before changing lanes. Avoid weaving between lanes. Flash your brake light when you are slowing down and before stopping. • Be courteous and respect other road users. Being courteous, non-aggressive and cooperative can go a long way in reducing crashes.

Well, there is good news and there is not good news. The Helmet Choice Bill received an Unfavorable report from the House Environment and Transportation Committee. What that means is that it is dead for this year. That is the not good news The good news is the vote was, 14 to 9 against. What that means is we convinced a few Delegates to change their vote from a no to a yes on helmet choice. Last year’s vote was 19-6 against. To those who may not be familiar with how things go in Annapolis that is a big deal! Okay, now we know what we must do. We need to convince 4 more Delegates to support freedom and helmet choice. Once the vote sheet is available we will know who supports us and who we need to convince we deserve to have our Freedom of Choice returned to us. Thanks to all who worked so hard on this bill and to everyone who made the hearing. It must have made a difference. Steve Strohmier ABATE of Maryland ____________________________________________________ Anyone who does not believe that your letters and emails to Legislators are a powerful tool, you are wrong. Today, March 15, 2017, The House Public Safety and Homeland Security Committee heard HB 14, Rep. Sean Lynn’s second shot at a mandatory helmet law. After testimony from AAA Atlantic, State Farm Inc., Delaware Insurance Commissioner Trinidad Navarro, Paul and Tammy Kalp, and Thunder Roads®Mid-Atlantic

others supporting the bill, a motley crew of concerned riders and fellow ABATE of Delaware members spoke against it. Rep. Brady motioned to table the bill. It received a unanimous vote from the remaining Committee members. That means that the bill Is dead in Committee. Be advised that it could rise from the ashes. Stay tuned to the ABATE of Delaware web site www.abateofde.com and follow us here for the most up to date information about pending legislation. After the vote I had the opportunity to speak with one of the committee members. He said that although it appeared that those supporting the bill may have the statistics, we had the numbers of people who took the time to write a letter or speak directly with them. Please take the time to thank the individual committee members for their support on this issue. Their contact information is at the link below. A BIG THANK YOU goes out to those who took the time to attend the hearing. I would like to specifically thank Hildy, Jimmy Ray aka “Chainsaw”, and Doug Drummond. Without their help and guidance this could have gone the other way. My hope is that we can convince someone to run a bill like HB 95 that would remove the requirement to carry a helmet – stay tuned. Also SB 12, the LED accent lighting for motorcycles bill passed, and is on its way to the full House for a vote. Although it only allows for amber and white, it’s better than what we have now. THROTTLE LIFE

2017 TIMONIUM MOTORCYCLE SHOW for Throttle Life Experienced by Adrian McQueen

February has been unseasonably warm this year so the Timonium Motorcycle Show at the Maryland State Fairgrounds was hotter than ever. The Timonium Motorcycle Show (TMS) is one of the largest motorcycle shows on the east coast. Enthusiasts, builders and patrons come to witness the wide array of custom sportbikes, baggers, choppers, drag bikes, vintage cycles and antiques of every make. The 3-day bike festival is seeing more and more attendees each year. The highly acclaimed “Travel, Touring & Adventure” exhibit which showcases key essentials to the lifestyle of motorcyclists was back and well attended. It is a right of passage that bikers go on long road trips across the nation, along the open road to absorb the beautiful sights the region has to offer. Gracing the show’s presence were Simon and Lisa Thomas, Lois Pryce, Austin Vince, Steph Jeavons, Rob Beach – Beach’s Motorcycle Adventures, Ayres Adventures and Edelweiss Bike Travel and Skip Mascorro from MotoDiscovery. Patrons were able to hear stories, discuss routes

and tips with some of the most noted, interesting and passionate motorcycle adventurists there are. The customs bikes weren’t as plentiful as showcased in past, but Eastern Performance Cycles, Harley Davdison, Pete’s Cycles, Garage Twenty-One, Design Worx and many others brought more than enough motorcycles for the all to see. The show stopper was “Teresa’s Dream”, the 2016 Fatboy Lo built and customized by Jim Fowler at Sick Sledz. “Teresa’s Dream” was built in memoriam to Teresa “Blueiz” Christiansen who was directly involved in the build providing feedback, suggestions, guidance and input prior to her untimely passing. Throughout the show prizes were given away by our good friends at Thunder Roads Mid Atlantic, live radio broadcasts from 98 Rock and plenty of games such as the Bikes and Babes Newlywed Game and a Strong Man Competition kept the crowd entertained. The show wouldn’t be complete without the contests from the lovely ladies of Girls of Thunder Roads. This year guests were treated to a Leather & Lace Valentine Show, Line Dance Lessons, Daisy Dukes and Cowboy Boots Fashion Show and the Bikini Contest.

BABCOCK STATE PARK

W

ith this month’s deadline ROAD approaching, it was once CAPTAIN’S again, time to summon REPORT the Google gods with a query of “State Parks.” We had been on rides with friends, earlier in the month. But the combination of stellar roads with lackluster destinations, and stellar destinations with lackluster roads, did not inspire the words, normally filling my head during the journey. We needed a destination, that not only would provide that “EUREKA!” moment, but would be equally as euphoric an experience riding there. One of the destinations that caught my eye was Babcock State Park, near Fayetteville, West Virginia. As many times as we’ve base camped in this area, it had always managed to fly under the radar. Temps started out in the low 40s. Shenny ignited with a loud roar as her twin MFs (short for Mother, I mean Magna Flows) thundered off the not too distant hillsides. There wasn’t a cloud in the sky, but the wind was howling. The ever-capable batwing was managing the gusty crosswinds, sans any rudder pedals. It wasn’t long before the world, as we knew it, was left behind. “Wheel in the Sky” from Journey, was playing on the audio system, as loud as it would go. As we approached a line crew working a few yards from the road, I noticed one of the workers cycling his arms, like Pete Townsend whaling on a power cord, caught in the moment. It always brings a smile to my face when someone shows their enthusiasm for a motorcycle riding by. In my Jeremy Clarkson voice, I thought, “Try THAT in a Prius.” Approaching Reinell, we found ourselves in a long line of cars, 22

so we stopped for lunch at Alfredo’s for some Gyros. It was the same place we ate at when we rode here after the floods last summer. We were glad it Home Made was still open. The staff Potato Chips there is really friendly and at Elliots the food is good. Although we saw some vacant businesses, much of the rest of the town seemed to have bounced back, with cars filling the parking lots and gas stations, and people milling about. “WV Rt 60 Strong” signs could be seen in many places: a solemn reminder of the hell these folks suffered and the struggles ahead. We followed a red Jeep most of the way to the park along Rt. 60. The last time I was here several years ago, I was chasing my buddy, Jake, on his R1200GS. Up until this point, the roads had been clear, and relatively free of traffic, outside of small towns. Following this slower vehicle on this pothole laden path was a bit tricky. Even while backing off, the likelihood of missing one of these dastardly divots, was about as likely as a network granting Gronk another interview with a Monster Girl before a race. We finally had a clear shot to pass, and after turning, we enjoyed some clean, slalom-free, riding all the way to our waypoint. Once inside the park, it was a short ride down the hill to the

parking area and gift shop. Our Eureka moment had arrived. Glade Creek was cascading over boulders the size of small asteroids, into a pool formed by a large rock wall and a small dam. There were only a few At the Gristmill cars there, and aside from a couple of fishermen on top of the wall, hoisting trout from the water below, we had the place to ourselves. We took some pics in the late afternoon sun, which reflected off the mist from the roaring water, then sat on one of the large boulders, taking it all in. Every note in the audible spectrum filled my head and I was soon overtaken by a calm serenity in this magical setting. After a kiss and a hug, we just sat there, arm in arm, lost in a world, we didn’t want to leave. With all the rushing water, it was time to tinkle. Fortunately, the gift shop was open. The friendly hostess helped us find a set of matching T shirts and told us where some of the other features of the park were located. There is a fully operational grist mill which makes freshly ground cornmeal, and sells it when stream conditions permit. She said it would be opening April 15th. The park also has some really nice cabins for rent. We were there a little early, but they too, should be available, sometime in April for Thunder Roads® Mid-Atlantic

Later that evening, we enjoyed a juicy burger and craft brew at Elliot’s Whitewater Bar & Grill. Their homemade potato chips were the bomb! They are located right at the Quality Inn, in Fayetteville, which we’ve stayed at many times. It’s the perfect setup in this target-rich region for any touring enthusiast wishing to stay a while, and not have to ride or Uber to a watering hole. Kanawha Falls, Summersville Lake and Dam, Long Point, New River Gorge Bridge, Hawks Nest State Park, are amongst the many attractions, in addition to Babcock State Park, to explore here. The motel is also part of the Choice Privileges Program and was only 8000 points at our time of stay.

We chose Rt. 39 for the ride home. Once inside the Rose on an Asteroid Monongahela (pronounced Muh-nahn-guh-HEE-luh, Lĕh-’nérd ‘Skin-’nérd) National Forest, the road takes on a new complexion, free of driveways and businesses. And aside from one truck, which we were able to make quick work of, it is usually void of traffic as well. You don’t have to be a Journey fan to get shivers, when Steve Perry hits those high notes, blasting over the speakers, in “Faithfully”, as you nail a perfectly radiused sweeper at sev,,,I mean 60 miles per hour. It’s just something we’ve discovered, for those of us who prefer existing, precariously balanced on two wheels, at speeds we feel right at home with, that seems to transform the ordinary into brilliance. Pair that with going to places we’d otherwise never go to, meeting cool people we’d otherwise never meet, and simply living a life, we’d otherwise never experience, and it’s clearly understood why so many are addicted to this lifestyle. If this is wrong, I don’t want to ever be right. Cheers and thanks for reading! Marc the Road Captain Ritchie Photos By Rose Grant

39th Annual Motorama Events Comes to a Close By: BrappMag.com Harrisburg, PA (2/21/17) Temperatures in the sixties brought racing and car fanatics out in droves to witness the 39th Annual Motorama Events at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex in Harrisburg. Arenacross, Quarter Midget and Go-Kart racing kept race fans entertained while R/C (Remote Control) and Robot Bikes like this early H-D Conflict provided an element board racer occasionally of technical precision. Car show up here. enthusiasts were treated to nearly 700 custom cars, trucks, cycles, performance vehicles and racing vehicles in the Rod, Custom & Tuner Show and Speed Show. The fans and drivers in attendance also gave generously to the 2017 Motorama Events official charity, The Children’s Miracle Network at Penn State Hershey Children’s Hospital. The organization benefitted from a Chinese auction and 50/50 raffle tickets.

Expert Arenacross Riders Take Multiple Wins A revamped track got the seal of approval by several Arenacross drivers in victory lane, at Motorama 2017. One such driver was pro 4-wheeler, John Natalie, who made his comeback to Motorama after a lengthy hiatus. “I love it here! In fact, I wish it was strung out over more days,” Natalie said. “Maybe a four-day event. That would be awesome.” When asked if Natalie is involved in any other types of racing, he replied, “all other racing, as long as I have the time. I think the circle tracks are awesome racing.” With so many young, new names taking over the sport, Natalie explained his secret for success. “Cardio. Weight lifting. I work out a lot more than I used to,” Natalie explained, “but I have always worked out.” The exercising is clearly working for Natalie, as he picked up wins for both Saturday and Sunday’s A-Mains, in the Open A 4-Wheel division.

Local Pro John Natalie shows he still knows his way around a Motorama track.

The “Dash for Cash” sponsored by TLD, Pagoda Motorcycle Club & District 6 Sports Association, returned for the second consecutive year to Motorama 2017. Fan-favorite, pro 4-wheeler, John Natalie dominated Saturday and Sunday’s dash, leading all three laps, six combined, over the two-day show. Justin Cooper dominated the two-wheel portion of the “Dash for Cash” by leading all of the combined six laps. For the first time in Motorama history, the 3-Wheel Trikes made an appearance on the Arenacross course. 23 total Trikes competed in an exhibition style race, Saturday and Sunday. Dover’s Joshua Crone was victorious both days. Saturday’s feature saw Dwight Jeckel and Dave Swinger finishing second and third while Christopher Headley and Joshua Kraychak completed the top three in Sunday’s exhibition race.

Over forty beautiful women were registered to compete in the 2017 Ms. Motorama Pageant that began a two-day contest, Saturday, with a fan-judged swimwear competition. A sportswear competition and interview completed the contest and was followed by a meeting of the pageant judges which resulted in the crowning of Tara Thorson, as Ms. Motorama 2017.

Cold Spring Harbor, New York’s Justin Cooper dominated the 2017 Motorama Arenacross course from start to finish. He competed in the 250cc A 2-Wheel and the Open A 2-Wheel divisions and claimed victories in both divisions, Saturday and Sunday.

Thorson, who was competing in her fourth Ms. Motorama pageant, graduated from the Lehigh Career & Technical Institute in Schnecksville, with a focus in tech welding. She loves drag racing and drives a drag truck at The Buck Motorsports Park.

Eight-year-old, Tommy Luffey is used to racing with the older kids. He’s proven himself several times that he has what it takes to race with the best up-and-comers on 4-wheels. Saturday, Luffey proved this once again, by crossing the finish line first in the 70cc Jr. Mini (6-11) 4-Wheel class. Just two races prior to his impressive 70cc victory, Luffey claimed the 50cc

The EVO Industries, Amped Apparel, TroyLee Designs and Drop of Ink sponsored event began with the crowning of the fan-judged swimsuit competition. Harrisburg’s Amanda Kathleen recorded the most cheers, taking the “Best in Swimwear” title. Emily Boyd and Sam Barker finished second and third.

BIG CITY RHINO CHALLENGE PRESENTED BY THUNDER ROADS® MID-ATLANTIC The Challenge

Big City Rhino, LLC. is challenging you to get out and Ride. Thunder Roads® Mid-Atlantic, THE MAGAZINE THAT RIDES, has put this challenge together with our sponsor, Law Offices of Jay Irwin Block, LLC. This is a riding challenge like no other! It features prizes every month that you can earn by simply getting out on your bike and riding to the numerous riding destinations and events across the Mid-Atlantic area! The Way it Works

Each month Thunder Roads® Mid-Atlantic will announce a list of “check-in” stops. These stops are selected based upon the recommendations of our readers and confirmed by our Road Crew. Riders then ride to these locations and present their Big City Card in order to “check-in”. Once a Rider has checked-in, their card number is then entered into a drawing. Each month, Thunder Roads® MidAtlantic will randomly select a rider’s check-in from across the regional states for special prizes and incentives. Prizes are developed by both Thunder Roads® Mid-Atlantic and our sponsors - allowing for some exciting options. The prizes may include riding gear or accessories, gift certificates, rally passes, concert tickets, and many other prizes for the motorcycle enthusiast! Every check-in counts as an entry in the drawing; if you hit 40 stops in a month, you have twice as many chances of winning as someone that only hits 20. Anyone can win with any checkin, but your chances of winning will increase by the amount you ride! The more you ride, the more opportunities you will have to win! The dedicated rider trekking across the states has a greater chance of accumulating prizes; however, even the couple that can only get out a few days a month to ride can also win! That’s the goal of this program – to encourage everyone to get out and ride!

Stop Prizes

Every month the Thunder Roads® Mid-Atlantic staff will randomly select winners from the check-ins. Some prizes will be specific to, and usually sponsored by, the particular stop.

Thunder Roads® Mid-Atlantic

For instance, a leather shop may award a custom leather vest to someone visiting their store during the month of June. That would be a prize specific to that stop and only riders checking in at that location would be eligible for that prize. Other prizes will be state-wide, with everyone eligible to win checking in at any location!

Winners

If your check-in is drawn, Thunder Roads® Mid-Atlantic will post your card number in both the magazine and online. Riders will then have 45 days to claim their prizes. For state-wide prizes, winners will have the opportunity to select from a number of prize options. For instance, a rider might have the option of winning a Rally Package that includes accommodations and extras for attending the rally. If that rider isn’t able to take advantage of that prize, he/she may opt for an alternate available prize instead. nn Riders can check-in once a week at a particular stop (Monday - Sunday), for a maximum of 4 check-ins per month, not counting bonuses. nn Riders are able to win multiple prizes based upon the drawing of their check-ins. nn Some prize drawings are specific to check-ins only for that particular month, while others prizes are drawn from checkins all season long. nn ALL check-ins have the opportunity to qualify for end-of-theseason prizes!

IT’S REALLY THAT SIMPLE…

APRIL 2017 37

HERE’S HOW YOU GET STARTED!

1. Get your Big City Card. 2. Find the list of stops each month from your Thunder Roads® Mid-Atlantic, the website (www. Thunderroadsmidatlantic.com), or Facebook 3. Ride out to these stops and show them your card. 4. Find your number published in any of the above listed locations and win! PLEASE NOTE - You can use your Big City Card indefinitely; all registrations carry over from year to year. Thunder Roads® Mid-Atlantic will also be registering riders for Big City Cards at specific events throughout the year as we distribute magazines. Key events, such as Rallies or Bike Nights may have a special booth for Big City Card registrations. In most cases, we will be offering bonus points both for those registering for the cards and those checking in with their previously issued cards at these stops. Thunder Roads® Mid-Atlantic will also be working with charities and various non-profit events to include them in the Stop schedule as well. This will be an easy means of encouraging participation and attracting riders from outside the local communities. In many cases, we will have specific prize drawings for those at these events. The Big City Cards will allow participants to easily and safely check in at all stops. Some Thunder Roads® Mid-Atlantic sponsors will also be offering discounts to readers that present the cards. Thunder Roads® Mid-Atlantic will be listing special discounts and offers in the magazine throughout the year as an added value to readers and means of encouraging our partners to offer these extra savings. PLEASE NOTE: Once you have received your BIG CITY CARD, you will not be asked to provide personal information or emails at any location for check-in. You simply enter your card number and date! This is not a “Chinese fire drill”, or “mad-dash” across the state. This is a Ride Challenge. It is intended to be meaningful for readers to discover new riding destinations while enjoying the ride there. In fact, we have designed the Challenge to encourage folks to break out of their local routes and trek to the furthest corners of the states.

Just Get Out and RIDE!

One of the really exciting aspects of the Big City Rhino Challenge is that it can be modified throughout the summer – if not the entire year. We will be adding and dropping stops each month. Readers will be able to nominate stops, and after we investigate them and agree that it’s suitable, they’ll be invited to join the run. Some stops will only run a few months, and possibly not consecutive. We can 38

also modify the run if it’s determined that it’s no longer suitable. We want to keep things exciting for you - the readers and riders on the run. We’re bikers and it’s all about the ride. We want to help create fun experiences for you and share some cool spots in our states. We also want to discover new spots, which is why we are encouraging everyone to nominate their favorite riding destinations.

If You Own A Business

As with the magazine itself, the Big City Challenge is presented through the support of our sponsors and partners all across the state. We have secured several key sponsorships already, but opportunities remain. If your business would like to get involved, this is a great way to promote yourself all across the states in a positive manner. Even if your organization is not a riding destination -you might become a sponsor for the tremendous promotional value it offers through the constant media attention it will receive. We also have a number of unique opportunities for branding – including being featured on contest motorcycles, jackets, shirts, and other opportunities. The exact number and nature of these options will be determined as details are finalized and as the promotion develops over the summer. Sponsors will ALWAYS have first priority in these placements.

Charities

Sponsors will also have the opportunity to team up with Thunder Roads® Mid-Atlantic to help promote various charity events across the states. The Big City Rhino Challenge is a great vehicle to help promote non-profit events in communities all across the state. With the support of regional and statewide sponsors - Thunder Roads® Mid-Atlantic can help promote these community events to a larger audience. Thunder Roads® Mid-Atlantic is involved in countless charitable events all across the states already; however, with the support of our sponsors, we will be able to assist even more. Bullet Points DECISIONS ON THE DEDICATED SIDEARM – PT. 2

Article and Photos by: Brody Kennen Since 2013-’14, we have seen a boom on the purchase of single-stack handguns for use in concealed carry. I have walked into many FFLs and witnessed the salesperson or a third-party trying to push a Ruger LCP/ 9 or similarly sized handgun off to the customer. I have also met many on shooting ranges and watched what they brought to shoot. Over the last year alone, most of those people stopped regularly shooting those smaller single-stack handguns. In fact, the only single-stack that I’ve seen people retain is the 9x19mm Glock-43, so far. In most of the cases, where one quit utilizing the compact handgun they bought for carry, those handguns were bought based on a “feel good” level and I will explain why. Women are targeted for certain kinds of handguns when it comes to sales. A compact carry handgun had been, almost exclusively, a revolver of some sort, up until 2012 roughly. As it is still the case today; the research, pre-purchase training / shooting had not been done. The complaints were of either the revolver being single-action or the football field length of the first-round, double-action pull – if the hammer wasn’t pulled back first. Today, with the compact and singlestack semi-automatics, the complaints are of “too little gun”. Again, no pre-purchase trips were made to a viable rental range. Mrs. Smith learned that there wasn’t enough grip length or width, nor was there enough weight, to keep even a .380 ACP from being painfully snappy in the hand and wrist while firing. The desire for a smooth shooting handgun is not exclusive to any one person, but women tend to get the short-end of the stick when it comes to suggestions about carry firearms. Two women, whom I know personally, preferred the “compact” Glock-19 over the double-stack, “sub-compact” G26 and the single-stack, “slimline” G43 variants. For them, as is the case for myself, the Glock-19 gave them the perfect balance of grip height, width and overall weight to keep the 9mm’s recoil tame despite having different hand sizes. They are just as capable of concealing the mid-sized handgun on their person with a proper holster and attire. And, in fact, they shoot the mid-sized handguns better than the sub-compact lines – brands being irrelevant. The most persistent issue with women carrying the “service”-sized handguns, in my humble opinion, is purse carry. I will explain it as simply as this, ladies. Your purse is already targeted by thieves. Don’t arm them, as well. The plateau of the boom was when some purchased stop-gap handguns, specifically the .380 ACP Glock-42, while waiting for the release of the single-stack 9mm Glock that ended up being the G43. I witnessed a lot of people buy themselves into a hole instead of waiting for the inevitable release of said 9mm, which is what they really

Thunder Roads® Mid-Atlantic

wanted. And, now? A lot of people have the little .380 with no way to sell them, because everyone else either has or wants the G43. Now, those G42s sit, collecting dust and all with no more than one-hundred rounds through them on average. I understand purchasing a Taurus TCP or Smith & Wesson Shield if your reasoning for a stop-gap is that it’s better to have one than not, but that’s not what the purchase of most of those G42s was about. I will admit, there are options for Glock-42 grip extensions such as the Strike Industries +2-round extensions and they make a similar option for the 9mm Glock-43. Sub-compact, double-stack handguns like the Glock-26 (known as the “Baby Glock”) suffer from a not so dissimilar problem. The short grip-length leaves the magazine base plate to sit shallow in the center of the palm. The problem with the recoil isn’t solely fixed by a pinky extension. You also need to support a proper “Combat Grip” with the palm. The best way to do this, using the Glock-26 as an example, would be buying an X-Grip magazine sleeve for alternate G17 or G19 magazines. The downside being that you must buy the standard or compact sized magazines for the platform. Furthermore, with the grip length that long, I would just go ahead and buy the G19 for the longer sight radius. Or, one could chop the grip on their G17 frame while retaining the barrel length… And, it is seemingly popular to do. I do recommend professional work done on that note. The moral of all of this is compact (mid-size) handguns will likely do you better than a subcompact or most single-stacks for concealed carry. Other aspects come into play, as well. Purchasing top-of-the-line inside-the-waistband holsters and belts will broaden your carry options and your daily wear will also come into play. I am a fellow of 5’09” stature and only weigh 125-pounds or so, but I can carry a full-size Glock with nothing more than a t-shirt during the summer. I, personally, need to move on to a new belt, but the G-Code INCOG IWB holster has worked wonders. A young lady, whom I know, learned she could run the exact same setup, with a mid-size Glock, while wearing a dress. But, you must invest in the proper equipment to get the job done. CHOOSING A MOTORCYCLE HELMET

W

ith the spring just upon us, you’ve started looking over your riding gear and noticed that the manufacturer date in your helmet liner is stamped 2/14/2012. This means your helmet is over 5 years old, your chaps are too tight and your jacket comes up above your belly button. So you need to buy some gear and you’ve decided to start with a helmet. Most people start here because they are either a) smart, or b) their state requires a DOT-certified brain bucket. But, wait! There are so many to choose from! We’re talking about fit first because, honestly, it’s the most important factor, both for your safety and your overall happiness with your helmet several thousand miles down the road. When a teen texting “OMG!” while driving punts you down the road, a cheap helmet that fits you right will provide better protection than a $600 racer replica that’s rattling around loose on your head. And even if you never put your helmet to the crash test, you’ll be a happier rider if your helmet fits right. Pressure points or excessive noise are an annoyance on a short ride but can be a literal, huge headache that takes the fun out of riding on a long day in the saddle. Getting the ideal fit means considering head shape, as well as head size. Some helmets make it easier by offering easily replaceable interior pads of different sizes to fine-tune the fit. Figuring out what kind of noggin you have will help you narrow down the choices and find a helmet that’s comfortable on your own unique head. What is my head shape? Everybody’s head is a bit different, but we are all generally egg shaped, falling somewhere between round and oval. For convenience, we divide this range into three main categories: round oval, intermediate oval and long oval. Modular (flip-face) helmets are mostly round oval, due to the hinge mechanism, though newer technologies are now allowing them to fit intermediate shapes better. Your head shape can be determined by using a mirror or having a friend look down on your head from the top. Extreme shapes should be readily apparent, but if you are not sure, you likely fall into the intermediate oval category (this is the most common). Keep in mind that the length or shape of your face, or the pudginess of your cheeks doesn’t affect head shape. A helmet that is the wrong shape will cause pressure points on your forehead (too round) or the sides of your head (too oval). When you buy a new helmet, we recommend wearing it for 30 to 45 minutes before using it on a ride to check for pressure points. These hot spots may not be immediately apparent but can grow into painful problems over time. Remember, if it goes out on the road it’s yours, so make sure to double check fit before wearing it on your bike. The most important aspect here is the crown of your head. Cheek-pads are often replaceable and do not determine shape or size.

correctly sized helmet will move slightly, but will pull the skin on your scalp and face with it, preventing rotation or large movements. How can I adjust the fit? Many helmets have replaceable cheek pads and liners that will allow for adjustment of the interior shape and fit of the helmet. Arai makes most of their helmets with a 5mm layer in the cheek pad and/or head liner that can be removed for a bit more room. Scorpion has their air pump system that allows for custom inflation of the cheek pads. Beyond switching out these items or using these features, any alteration to the inside of the helmet will likely result in loss of warranty and risks compromising the integrity of the helmet. Your helmet should feel equally snug around the crown and a good bit tight in the cheeks. Generally, a new helmet out of the box should fit snugly because it will become a little looser after months of use. Head liners typically only break in about 5 percent, while cheek pads often compress about 15 percent to 20 percent over time. A snug fit is good unless you are developing a point or area of pain.

Rider TIPS

WHAT IS MY HEAD SIZE? Measure your head with a cloth tape measure around your head from just above your eyebrows to the thickest point in the back. This circumference, usually listed in inches, can be crossreferenced with the size chart on any helmet. A helmet that is the wrong size will either be too loose and move around on your head too much or will be too tight and not sit down completely on your head, causing a high fit or simply pressure all around the crown. A 46

TOURING HELMET It’s an absolute must that a worthy long-distance touring helmet do a handful of things extremely well. Balance, ergonomics and low sound levels are of utmost importance, since the rides will generally be longer and any discomfort only becomes magnified after hours in the saddle. Ventilation is critical in hot weather and the upright riding position of most touring bikes works better with some venting configurations than others. The vents should be at the top of the head, most effectively flowing air when the rider is straight up. You will no doubt see upgraded safety certifications, optimal creature comforts and futuristic materials in shell construction. We picked several of our favorite long-distance touring helmets and detailed the features and benefits of each in this video in an effort to remove some of the cloudiness that inherently exists when so many options are available. MODULAR HELMET Modular motorcycle helmets have skyrocketed in popularity in recent years as a growing number of riders seek more versatility from their lids. Designed to be worn in the full-face configuration, with the face shield and chin bar in place, or as an open-face helmet, with the chin bar lifted up, modular helmets are extremely popular with the ADV and sport-touring crowds. At the base level, all modular helmets have a chin bar that can be flipped up. At the next level, helmets like the Shark Evoline 3 ST completely flip up and around to the back of the head for full-on aerodynamic openface riding. Others, like the Scorpion EXO-900 and the Nolan N44, can be reconfigured from a full-face helmet to a comfortable openface helmet in a matter of seconds with removable parts. Both of these helmets have removable visors and chin bars and can be configured multiple ways. It’s important to consider the level of versatility you desire when buying a modular helmet, as the chin bar systems, face shields, and occasional sun visors vary from helmet to helmet. Half or Open Face Helmet It should be noted that half helmets and three-quarters or openface helmets are inherently less protective, due to the lack of coverage in the face and the jaw. However, these helmet categories offer their own advantages, such as better visibility, more airflow,

APRIL 2017

less weight and a more intimate connection with rain, hail, bugs, dirt, and the smell of freedom! You are the only person who can set your priorities when it comes to riding gear. Make sure you

understand the plusses and minuses involved, keeping safety and riding experience in mind. SHORTY HELMETS While this style of helmet is considered the least safe, they are DOT certified for safety. As with any other helmet, you should try it on for size and fit. The fit should be snug and with the retaining strap properly adjusted, it shouldn’t wobble or move around. What do you ride? I know, it’s ridiculously cool, it’s got two wheels, and it goes faster than Superman on a sunny day, but let’s home in on some specifics. What’s your posture on the bike? An upright riding position, like you find with many touring bikes, means that you don’t lean forward at all (or perhaps lean back slightly, in the case of cruisers). A touring helmet usually works best with this riding position. Sport-touring bikes and some standards put the rider in the three-quarters posture, meaning you are leaned slightly forward. The range of variation here is wide, because some bikes have windscreens while others are naked. These riders have the most flexibility of choice and may be happiest with anything from a touring helmet to a dual-sport or race helmet. You are the captain of your ship and you must determine how much risk you are willing to take, how safe you plan to be and what you are comfortable wearing on your journey. Whatever the choice you make, we at Sunset Cycles are here to help so if you have any questions on gear, please feel free to contact us at 410 390-5105 or visit us online at sunsetcyclesocmd.com or visit our shop at Sunset Cycles, 9748 Stephen Decatur Hwy Unit 208, Ocean City, MD. 21842.

NCOM BIKER NEWSBYTES AIM-2622-F-Ad for Tennessee.indd 1 Compiled & Edited by Bill Bish, National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM) CONGRESSIONAL BILLS REINTRODUCED TO CURB ETHANOL Calling the Federal Ethanol Mandate “a Flop,” a bipartisan group of lawmakers have re-introduced two bills in the U.S. House of Representatives to cap the ethanol content of commercial gasoline and decrease the total volume of renewable fuel that must be contained in gasoline on the American market. “It’s time the ethanol mandate became a thing of the past. While well-intentioned from the start, after a decade of this policy it couldn’t be more obvious that the RFS is a flop,” announced Congressman Bob Goodlatte (R-VA) on March 2, 2017 after introducing two bills to alter the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS), the RFS Elimination Act (H.R. 1314) and the RFS Reform Act (H.R. 1315). Reps. Goodlatte, Jim Costa (D-CA), Steve Womack (R-AR), and Peter Welch (D-VT) issued a joint statement after reintroducing H.R. 1315; “The Renewable Fuel Standard is a well-intentioned flop…it’s clearer than ever that the federal government’s creation of an artificial market for the ethanol industry has resulted in a domino effect that is hurting people across the country.” The RFS Elimination Act (H.R. 1314) has the support of 60 bipartisan cosponsors and would repeal the Renewable Fuel Standard which mandates that 36 billion gallons of renewable fuels (primarily corn ethanol) be part of our nation’s fuel supply by 2022. The RFS Reform Act (H.R. 1315), which has the support of 42 cosponsors, “eliminates corn-based ethanol requirements, caps the amount of ethanol that can be blended into conventional gasoline at 10 percent, requires the EPA to set cellulosic biofuels levels at production levels, and decreases the total volume of renewable fuel that must be contained in gasoline sold or introduced into commerce for years 2017-2022.” BLACK BOX PRIVACY PROTECTION ACT H.R.736, the “Black Box Privacy Protection Act”, was introduced in the House on January 30, 2017 by Rep. Michael Capuano (D-MA). This bill amends the Automobile Information Disclosure Act to require manufacturers of new automobiles to disclose on the information label affixed to the window of the automobile: (1) the presence and location of an event data recorder (commonly referred to as a “black box”), (2) the type of information recorded and how such information is recorded, and (3) that the 50

recording may be used in a law enforcement proceeding.11/1/11 5:06 PM The bill sets forth similar requirements for motorcycle manufacturers. An “event data recorder” is any device or means of technology installed in an automobile that records information such as automobile or motorcycle speed, seatbelt use, application of brakes, or other information pertinent to the operation of the automobile or motorcycle. The bill prohibits the manufacture, sale, offering for sale, or import into the United States of an automobile manufactured after model year of 2016 that is equipped with an event data recorder, unless the consumer can control the recording of information. Violators are liable to the U.S. government for a civil penalty of up to $5,000 for each violation with a maximum penalty of $35 million for a related series of violations. The event data recorder in an automobile or motorcycle, and any data recorded, shall be considered the property of the owner of the automobile or motorcycle. Retrieval or downloading of recorded data by any other person is unlawful, except: (1) with the owner’s consent, (2) in response to a court order, or (3) by a dealer or automotive technician to service the vehicle. Certain violations are to be treated as unfair or deceptive acts or practices under the Federal Trade Commission Act. IDAHO SENATE KILLS ANTI-PROFILING BILL THAT HOUSE UNANIMOUSLY ENDORSED Idaho senators killed a proposal outlawing motorcycling profiling, which had passed the House unanimously, defeating H.B.123 on the Senate floor by a vote of 22-13 on March 15. Several senators said they’d spoken with their local sheriffs or other law enforcement and learned there had been no complaints of motorcycle profiling, that law enforcement opposed the bill, and one senator testified that his local sheriff said if the bill became law a motorcycle gang member wearing colors who was stopped for probable cause would get a plausible defense. The bill would have banned motorcycle profiling by state or local law enforcement, which it defines as “the arbitrary use of the fact that a person rides a motorcycle or wears motorcycle-related paraphernalia as a factor in deciding to stop and question, take enforcement action, arrest or search a person or vehicle.” In 2011, the state of Washington passed a further-reaching law, which also included requirements for training for law enforcement. Advocates reported that complaints about motorcycle profiling there dropped 90 percent after the anti-profiling law took effect. In 2016,

APRIL 2017

Thunder Roads® Mid-Atlantic

Maryland became the second state to enforce such anti-profiling measures. “This bill is consistent with good police practices, which relies on conduct for making a stop,” said Senator Jeff Agenbroad (R-Nampa), the bill’s Senate sponsor in an interview with The Spokesman-Review newspaper. WASHINGTON ACTIVISTS RALLY FOR LANE-SPLITTING Motorcycle advocates rallied in Olympia on Friday, March 17 in support of state Senate Bill 5378, which would allow motorcycles to go in-between cars stuck in traffic, or “split lanes.” Some motorcyclists are demanding a public hearing. The bill has passed in the Senate with a bipartisan majority but has since been stuck in a House committee for weeks. Motorcyclists want a vote on it, and before that can happen, it needs a public hearing. The issue has created a firestorm on social media, pitting many drivers against motorcycle riders who want to see the legislation pass in Washington State. “In most cases we can split a lane and not interfere with anybody or not hit anybody, and we can move on right down the road,” Andy McAfee, a member of Spanaway ABATE, told CBS-affiliate KREM-2 news. Basically, the law would allow motorcyclists to ride between lanes of cars in heavy traffic. They would have to keep their speeds below 35 mph and go no more than 10 mph above flow of traffic. If passed, the legislation would also make vehicle drivers guilty of an infraction if they intentionally block a motorcycle from splitting lanes. Currently, lane splitting is only legal in California, though similar measures have recently been introduced in Texas (S.B.288), Oregon (S.B.385) and Hawaii (H.B.727). UTAH LEGISLATURE VOTES TO REQUIRE HELMETS FOR RIDERS UP TO AGE 21 A bill to newly require motorcyclists ages 18, 19 and 20 to wear helmets has passed the Utah legislature and is on its way to Governor Gary Herbert for his signature or veto. Under current Utah law, motorcyclists under 18 years old are required to wear helmets. The Utah House voted 43-30 on Wednesday, March 8 to approve S.B.159. The Senate previously approved it 17-12. The bill is sponsored by Senator Brian Shiozawa (R-Cottonwood Heights), an emergency room doctor who says he has seen far too many traumatic head injuries from motorcycle crashes among young adults. But several lawmakers argued against the proposal, questioning the value of restricting personal freedoms in the name of safety and describing the bill as “legislative creep.” ARIZONA HELMET LAW DECISIVELY DEFEATED “In Arizona, you don’t mess with regulations on who can ride in the back of a pickup truck, and you don’t force a helmet on a motorcyclists’ head,” stated the Arizona Republic newspaper in reporting the demise of a Pay-to-Play helmet law proposal in committee. “That was made clear Wednesday (Jan 18), when a bill to mandate helmets got its first public consideration in years and promptly died.” Even the Democratic colleagues of the bill’s sponsor, Rep. Randy Friese (D-Tucson), voted against House Bill 2046. “Although no one could immediately pinpoint the last time the issue came before a committee, the prior proposal inspired bikers to circle Thunder Roads®Mid-Atlantic

the Capitol mall, longtime staffers said. The rumble from the engines was so loud it was heard inside House and Senate chambers and shook office partitions.” Bikers decked out in leather and bandanas told lawmakers the greater peril came from cars and trucks and said more education for all drivers is the better solution. The eight members of the House Transportation Committee sided with the bikers, voting unanimously to reject the bill. H.B.2046 would have imposed a fine of $500 on violators, with $300 of the fine going directly to a fund for head trauma patients, and in a twist, proposed that riders could pay a fee when registering their motorcycle allowing them to purchase an exemption to the law. DRIVERLESS BIG RIGS NEARLY ROAD READY Self-driving big rigs that improve logistics, cost savings and road safety, could be on freeways even sooner than autonomous passenger cars, which have been hogging most of the limelight. The process of automating long-haul freight trucks -- the behemoths that deliver food and goods, often to places airplanes, boats and trains can’t or won¹t go -- is actually easier than it is for cars. This is because these trucks spend most of their road time on open highways, where there is less stopping and fewer traffic rules than in areas with pedestrians, according to Anthony Levandowski, CEO of Otto, an autonomous-trucking company he co-founded early last year. Speaking at the annual Mobile World Congress in Barcelona this week, Levandowski, a former software engineer on Google¹s selfdriving car project, added that despite racking up only 5.6 percent of all the miles driven in the U.S., trucks are found to be at fault for nearly 9.5 percent of the country¹s driving fatalities. Many proponents of selfdriving technology believe it can reduce human error, often brought on by fatigue. Otto, which Uber bought in August 2016, also wants to enable driverless commercial trucks to operate in carefully synchronized fleets. “Truck Platooning,” explains Jim Elgin, Chairman of ABATE of Ohio, “is a fast track issue” using radar and vehicle-vehicle (V2V) technologies to form and maintain close-headway formation between two or more in-lane vehicles. Smart tailgating, but “The big question,” asks Elgin, “is it Motorcycle-Friendly or not?” Truck convoys are nothing new, of course, but a computerized driving system could theoretically let them safely drive even closer together, reducing the wind drag that makes engines work harder and burn more gas. For obvious reasons these trucks could also stay on the road for longer stretches, giving drivers some much-needed downtime rather than keeping them at the wheel well past exhaustion. NCOM CONVENTION SHUFFLES INTO RENO CASINO The 32nd annual NCOM Convention will be held Mother’s Day weekend, May 11-14, 2017 at the Silver Legacy Resort-Casino, located at 407 N. I’m a gal, he’s single... He lives right across the street. I can see his place from my kitchen window. I watched as he got home from work this evening. I was surprised when he walked across the street, up my driveway and knocked on the door. I opened the door, he looked at me and said, “I just got home, and I have this strong urge to have a good time, dance, get drunk, and have wild sex tonight. Are you doing anything? “I replied, “Nope, I’m free!” “Great,” he said. “Can you watch my dog?” __________________________________________________ A little silver-haired lady calls her neighbor and says, “Please come over here and help me. I have a killer jigsaw puzzle, and I can’t figure out how to get started.” Her neighbor asks, “What is it supposed to be when it’s finished?” The little silver haired lady says, “According to the picture on the box, it’s a rooster.” Her neighbor decides to go over and help with the puzzle. She lets him in and shows him where she has the puzzle spread all over the table. He studies the pieces for a moment, then looks at the box,

then turns to her and says, “First of all, no matter what we do, we’re not going to be able to assemble these pieces into anything resembling a rooster.” He takes her hand and says, “Secondly, I want you to relax. Let’s have a nice cup of tea” and then he said with a deep sigh ............ “Let’s put all the Corn Flakes back in the box.” __________________________________________________ Two old drunks are sitting in a bar when the first one says, “Ya know, when I was thirty and got an erection, I couldn’t bend it, even using both hands. By the time I was forty, I could bend it about ten degrees if I tried really hard. By the time I was fifty, I could bend it about forty five degrees, no problem. I’m gonna be sixty next week, and now I can bend it in half with just one hand.” “So,” says the second drunk, “what’s your point?” “Well, I’m just wondering how much stronger I’m gonna get.”

Motor Vehicle Insurance for Motorcyclists By Matt Danielson, The Motorcycle Law Group

W

e all hope we’ll never be involved in an accident, but the reality is that many of us will be. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think riding is dangerous. But, when you get out on the road, you’re sharing it with other riders and drivers and can be at the mercy of poor road and weather conditions. While insurance can’t prevent an accident, it is the best means to protect yourself after the fact. So whether you’re looking to insure a new bike or review your current policy, it’s important to know how much you – and your bike – are protected. What type of policy is best? How much coverage should I have? If another driver is at fault, won’t their insurance cover the costs? These are some of the most common questions clients ask me, and are a good place to start. Full coverage: Is that enough? Not necessarily. The term ‘full coverage’ can be misleading because it doesn’t necessarily mean the policy will cover everything in full in the event of an accident. Full coverage typically includes all the major types of coverages your insurance provider offers. But, some insurance companies define ‘full coverage’ differently. What’s more important is how much coverage you bought. If you also bought the minimum amount of coverage (read: coverage limit, $25,000 for example), you will most likely receive only the minimum limits for your injury, regardless of how serious it is or the verdict you receive in court. If someone injures me, won’t their insurance pay the expenses? Yes, but only to the limits of their policy. If you’re in an accident and the other motorist is at fault, their insurance will pay out, but that doesn’t mean it’ll cover all the costs. The other motorist’s insurance coverage will only pay up to their policy limit, and if they’re like most, they bought the minimum amount their state requires. For example, the minimum amount of insurance a person must have in North Carolina is $30,000. In Georgia, South Carolina and Virginia, the minimum is $25,000. Regardless of how serious the injuries or damages are (read: expensive), the other motorists’ insurance will not have to pay you any more than their policy limits. If the person that hit you has only minimum limits, 60

that probably won’t be enough to cover your medical bills, lost wages, pain, suffering and inconvenience, which you’re entitled to if you’re in a serious accident due to the negligence of another motorist. Can’t I sue the other person if it was their fault? Yes, you can, but that won’t change the amount of money their insurance will pay you. Let’s say you sue and get a verdict of $500,000. The defendant’s insurance company still won’t have to pay you any more than the defendant’s policy limits. So, if the defendant’s policy limits are $25,000, that’s the maximum amount their insurance is required to pay toward the costs of the accident. Then I can recover from the defendant’s personal assets, right? More often than not, no. Most people don’t have enough personal assets to cover the costs of serious injuries. And, assets jointly owned with a spouse – like a bank account, house or land – typically cannot be used to satisfy a judgement. Even if you’re in a situation where you can collect from a defendant’s personal assets, the defendant may have the ability to declare bankruptcy and have your judgement against them discharged. Insurance coverage can be complicated, and not always relevant – until you really need it. Next time we’ll explain coverage types, protecting yourself against uninsured or underinsured motorists and how to talk to your insurance provider. Until then, please don’t hesitate to contact me with any questions.
