2 THUNDER ROADS MAGAZINE LOUISIANA

Letter From The Publishers

Before you read…know that we are not choosing sides, nor are we proclaiming to be democrats or republicans…we are all Americans…It’s that simple. We are bit perplexed this month with all of the insanity saturating our country. We are patriots of the United States of America, and we are proud to say it just as many bikers do across the nation. Now, along with our fellow Americans, we are now faced with the stark reality of survival as we may end up losing some of our rights as citizens we hold so dear. We are not a political magazine. Because of that, we try to remain neutral out of respect for the personal beliefs of others. However, with all of the turmoil and insanity going on, we also feel an obligation to address these issues upon the pages in front of you now. People are murdering peace officers and rioting out of ignorance. Innocents are being unjustly attacked seemingly every day. This weighs heavy on our hearts, minds, spirits, and souls as we mourn for those who suffer and have been taken too soon all because of seeds of ignorance planted by our country’s leaders. At its heart, this magazine’s intent is to entertain, respect, and enjoy the freedom of riding motorcycles. In that, we strive to honor those who have died and still serve the United States through the military and law enforcement. We don’t stop there as we help those who are in serious need with the many charities and benefits we ride for. We’re not asking for thanks. That’s not what it’s about. Bikers are not saviors nor pretend to be. All we want is everyone to have a chance at the same happiness we enjoy through that service. As we dig deep on a daily basis to understand and practice tolerance, all we can ask from our readers is to do the same. Also folks, we are vigorously trying to shed a light on the entire world that the term “biker” is a positive force in our society. Recently, we have shown just what a positive and powerful force the biker community can be for the entire world to see recently at the Republican Convention in Cleveland Ohio! It was one of our proudest moments as the biker community when thousands of bikes thundered in to show support and protect the delegates and attendees. The biker community’s presence was to keep the peace. Although main stream media did little to acknowledge them, we will!!!!!!! Thank you to all of our American bikers who rode in. Know that your example has made history! This month’s issue is about us, the American biker. We dedicate these pages to the fallen Americans around the world, and to the Baton Rouge Police Department and law enforcement across our great nation. May God bless us all. May God bless the United States of America. God bless Louisiana. FROM ALL OF OUR STAFF Andrew, Renee, Rodster, Uncle Jerry, Crystal Chandler, Jennifer Dugan, Kimberly Pecorino, Steve Dupre, Dina Moore, Nikki Hebert, Top Hat Arte, Blasko Train, Tod Dixon, Happy Horton, Dustin Bergeron, Lisa Reid, and Nate Templeton. R.I.P. to all of our brothers and sisters who lost the ride…

Our Place

1st Place - Keith Chandler

2nd Place - Ron Hudson

Im going to start this off with a mission statement from Fallen Riders Foundation so you will know why the owners, of Our Place and staff members of Thunder Roads Louisiana got behind this event… Our cause is YOU, the motorcyclist. First, we are not an M.C., R.C., or Riding Association. We are a 501(C)(3) nonprofit corporation certified as a public charity by the lRS. We have one purpose and one purpose only. To be there to help the families of riders who are injured or killed while on their bike. We don’t care if you are a club member or an independent. If you go down, and your family needs help, that’s where we come in. We will help the family or club with funeral expenses if needed, help with medical transportation costs if that’s needed, or, if a rider is injured and hospitalized we will help with such mundane, but necessary, things as paying a utility bill to keep the family’s lights on, or even help with some grocery money, if that is what is needed. We are designed to be there to help in whatever way we can and that we have the ability to provide. Secondly, we do not have memberships as such. lf you ride a motorcycle, then you are a brother or sister in the wind and that makes you a member. We receive no payment or salary from the foundation for what we do. Any and all funds we have are for the help of the fallen and their families. The Foundation is totally dependent upon donations from individuals for what it does. We don’t have 6 THUNDER ROADS MAGAZINE LOUISIANA

government grants or big corporate sponsors behind us. We are people who ride, who saw a real need in our rather extended family of the wind, and did what it takes to take action about the situation. Now, that you understand what Fallen Riders is all about, here is what happened the day of the event. There were several other benefits going on, and they were all worthy causes to be assured. But unless you were at Our Place with Ron and Carol and the gang, you missed out on some of the best fried fish we ever ate, and some of the best company we have experienced in the Shreveport/Bossier area! Some lovely ladies participated in the model search contest and “Hippie” even made the 5 hour drive from Fallen Riders to join in the festivities. The bike show was won by Keith Chandler, Ron Hudson, and Crystal Chandler. Thank you to all who participated, and to Ron and Carol for your hospitality. And a special thanks to Ms. Rita for “housing” us and the puppy! And last but not least to Crystal for covering the photography while “ANDROID” was away and for the “iced bandannas” (we will never forget that genius planning). Please make sure you take that amazing, scenic and beautiful ride when you are on your bike to enjoy the company and hospitality of Our Place on the beautiful Lake Bistineau in Elmgrove, LA. You will be glad you did! Tell em Thunder Roads sent you, and by the way they are a participating sponsor of the Louisiana Thunder Run stop, so pull out your ride cards and get a chance to win a prize and get the discounts they are offering!

Loveland, CO., June 28, 2016 - The natural beauty of Ouray, nestled in the San Juan Loop of the Rocky Mountains of Colorado was bathed in morning sunlight and cast a stunning backdrop and forward thinking view to the 3rd Women’s Motorcycle Summit hosted by the S.T.R.O.N.G. Women of the Steel Horse Sisterhood. The event, featuring the 1st America’s Summit Challenge, could not have turned out more perfect. Over 65 women riders took to the highways encompassing westward Moab, Utah, eastward Grand Junction, and southward Durango, both located in beautiful Colorado. 1st America’s Summit Challenge featured prime riding areas we have all heard the names of: Hwy 128, also known as the Upper Colorado River Scenic Byway including part of the Dinosaur Diamond Prehistoric Highway; the Colorado National Monument; The Grand Mesa; the Black Canyon of the Gunnison; the Scenic Hwy 145 following the San Miguel River to Telluride; and of course, the infamous MILLION DOLLAR HIGHWAY. The western Colorado setting perfectly complemented this year’s theme of the event. The S.T.R.O.N.G. Women of the Steel Horse Sisterhood reflected their ambitious mission of inspiring growth in women’s lives and in the sport of women & motorcycling by hosting this summit. Women who registered to compete in the Summit Challenge were provided a 92-page “Clue Book” containing over 70 fascinating waypoints. An inspiring photo shoot in Ridgeway, located on a river’s edge surrounded by “Legends of the West”, an old western movie set and featuring renowned photographer, Marla Rutherford drew the participation of over 35 women riders. The Steel Horse Sisterhood big top tent was where the action happened once ladies were “off the road”. Base camped at Twin Peaks Lodge & Hot Springs at the foot of the Million Dollar Highway, the featured location provided the setting for the female participants to enjoy their off time, sharing meals, entertainment, live music and the silent auction. Lifetime friendships were forged. Star performers, inspiring keynote speakers and challenging riding to discover the locations, obvious and hidden, requiring GPS coordinates once competition began, was the norm throughout this event. Keynote speakers featured Joan Krenning, STEEL HORSE SISTERHOOD; Pat Jacques, ADVWOMAN; June Cline, MAKE IT A GREAT RIDE; and Sandy Aguilera, STAR CONCEPTS; gave inspirational and challenging presentations. The fact that these women are all risk takers, visionaries in their fields as well as seasoned motorcyclists became evident to all in attendance. “Women are not undergoing evolution or revolution but a metamorphosis.” It is a time to be visionary now, more than ever. It is a time for women to share all of their visions for innovative change to help create a “world devoid of domestic violence and sexual abuse.

A Day At

When you think of causes that a biker rides for, one that comes first in your mind is Bikers Against Child Abuse, or BACA…and in June the owner of Tilly’s combined her one year anniversary party with a fund raiser that is close to her heart. Ms. Emelie Granier has a family member that was affected by child abuse several years ago, and wanted to “give back” to the bikers that reached out to her and helped the child become empowered and feel safe from her abuser… Beautiful women came out to strut their stuff for the bikini contest (pictured here), great food, awesome people, and a variety of prizes donated by many people added to a great time and a great turnout, despite all of the other benefits and rides around the New Orleans area that day. Ms. Emelie wants everyone to know that she has saved a grand prize of a 60 inch TV to raffle off as well. So stop by and get yourself a raffle ticket! The staff here at Thunder Roads would personally like to thank all who came and participated, and especially to everyone that volunteered their time to cook, and serve the

The Patriot Corner

delicious pulled pork sliders. ( it was amazing). A special heartfelt thanks to Ms Robin Long that donated the funding to purchase many of the auction items and some of the expenses incurred so that we could all attend and enjoy a day of fellowship with the biker community and the inspiring members of BACA. If you are riding and get hungry, trust me when I say you have GOT to GO to Tilly’s bar and Smokehouse. My favorite that I sometimes travel a distance to get is the Fish plates.. yum!!

The opinion in this article does not necessarily represent Thunder Roads Louisiana Magazine. I am writing this in the wake of a shooting in Texas where 5 police were shot. Days later the President congratulated the organization that was behind the shooting. I know you’re thinking what a guy. To understand why a certain political party would do something like that here is why. There are rules to creating a socialist society. 1) Government controlled health care. 2) Poverty, increase the poverty level poor people are easy to control. 3) National Debt to raise taxes. 4) Gun control enough said there. 5) Welfare control food and housing and income. 6) Education; control education, (you know make people stupid and it seems to be working). 7) Religion; remove it from everywhere possible. 8) Class Warfare; (we know that’s going on right now.) These are the basic’s, but there is more like, 9) bringing in people who will start a Holy war. Now that can even stop an election. How many of these are going on right now? Have you noticed that the people who say take from the rich and give to the poor are rich and you know they are not going to take from their pockets and give to you. The only people who actually believe that are the people looking for a free ride. The goal of the government or this admiration is not to make everyone rich it’s to bring everyone down to the poverty level to make you need the government to live. Then they have control over you. On the health care issue, the government is going to be fining companies millions of dollars if they continue to supply health care to employees so don’t blame your company when they cut your benefits as it’s our own government’s fault. It’s kind of like strong arming your company. Poverty? Look what the Government is doing in our own state to the oilfield. I don’t need to go on with the rest. I am sure everyone reading already knows and have seen the signs. The Government needs to break us to build us back up as a socialist country. Sounds crazy I know but it’s happening when the POTOS promotes the killing of police he opens the door for unrest, which is his goal is to get the U.N. on American soil by creating political unrest. Once the U.N. is on your land they have control of you or so they think. But Americans don’t just lie down! As for 911 I was watching when the buildings were hit like everyone after the buildings fell all 3, I personally heard when the news caster said the Federal building had to be taken down because of the damage. Now I didn’t realize this until much later when a friend of mine told me our country was behind 911. I told him he was crazy until I saw the Federal building actually being taken down. The problem with the report and the video is you can’t just put a bomb in a building and make it implode it takes months of preparation. We all know there is no plane that hit the Pentagon there was not one piece of a plain left so they said. We also had no plane parts left in the field. You check it out and see for yourself. There are many sites that will show you 911 was possible a false flag. I can tell you this; in my opinion the government wants your guns they will try to get them soon. They want control of your house, your money, and your way of life. One ban they want to do is guns that look military, fire with a clip and have a pistol grip. What I have written is not only my opinion but the opinion of many. You need to make your up your own mind and decide where you will be when the government decides to do what they’re going to do. One more thing United We Stand Divided we will Fall. Our government has been dividing us for almost 8 years. We have to stop this. If we don’t come together as people were finished as a nation………………….. An American Patriot Benton Lovoi Jr.

THUNDER ROADS MAGAZINE LOUISIANA 11

Pastor’s Corner What in the world is going on? It’s a question not a statement Seems like over the past year this world has been going crazy. Everyday it’s something new. We have seen domestic violence in the home sky rocketing, husbands are killing wives, wives killing husbands, children killing parents, parents killing children. We have terrorist bombing gatherings, mass shootings in public places Churches and schools being invaded and those inside being murdered in their desk and pews. We have the daily threat of ISIS and the Muslim extremist who vow to kill us like dogs. We had nearly 100 killed this month in NICE, France ran over by a truck like speed bumps in his way. The democratic and republican dispute where citizens are protesting and violence is breaking out. Our country is being flooded by illegal immigrants with some shouting we need to build a wall while others say we need to seal our borders. We got people burning our flag and protesting our American heroes: the men and women in uniform. We have seen those who serve and protect us being ambushed and massacred in the light of day. What is going on???? We’ve experienced people marching in the street with signs that read “no more racism”, screaming black lives matter, white lives matter, blue lives matter We have had protest here in our own state over the two officers who shot Alton Sterling. We have citizen turning against the government and the government turning against it citizens. We have citizens turning against each other We have gang wars, we have churches fighting churches We have human trafficking where young girls are being sold into sexual slavery We have more and more families and homes being destroyed by drugs Thursday night July 14, on Fox News Megan Kelley said it seems like there is no place safe We have some calling for us to lock and load I want to be honest with you it these reports, and situations get to me, I turn on the news and it more of the same, I get on social media more of the same, water cooler talk more of the same. Makes me want to retreat to my 26 acres in Washington Parish and build a commune. I have been running through the gears in my life, seems like it doesn’t matter if I’m in first gear or sixth gear I’m stuck in this mess. But on the inside of me I know I got another gear – I know I need to shift But where is this need gear? I am writing to tell you today the answer your looking for, that gear you searching for is available today. It’s not the gear of hate, it’s not the gear of blame, it’s not the gear of violence the gear that we are looking, the gear we know is there is called Faith It’s time to get your motors running and head out on the Faith-Way I heard someone ask for a response once by saying these words “what say ye?” You want to know what I say??? “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.” Ephesians 6:12 NKJV I shared this simple but life changing thought in one of our service

recently. “We can curse the darkness or build a lighthouse against the approaching storm.” We can curse each other, and blame each other, and even pick sides, but the real issue is the devil and his plan for us to separate rather than come together. He has very cleverly disguised his plan. He is good at because he has had plenty of practice. “And no wonder! For Satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light.” II Corinthians 11:14 NKJV If he can get us to curse each other, he can divide us and God’s Word is very clear on what happens when people divide. “If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. And if a house is divided against itself, that house cannot stand.” Mark 3:24-25 NKJV Like a thief our enemy has one purpose in mind and that is to destroy us. “The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.” John 10:10 NKJV As I head out today …. Throw my leg across that my Hog, I know that my helmet is the salvation of The Lord God Almighty. My vest is the breastplate of righteousness. My boots are made preparation of peace. And yes I’m packing and yes I’m locked and loaded. I’ve got the sword of the Spirit and it will cut through the lies and rumors to the truth that sets me free. And I’m gonna lift my shield of FAITH and put out every fiery dart the Devils shoots at me Yes I may ride a motorcycle but I got another gear and that gear super charges me. It’s Faith Gear. Blessings Pastor T

On July 19th, several hundred bikes rode out in solidarity to honor the fallen, and the ones who still serve our community, at the Baton Rouge police headquarters. At last count that night 578 American citizens from the biker community in Louisiana came out to show their love, support and respect for the fallen officers who were murdered, and to the their families and friends, and the ones that are still here on the front lines everyday protecting our community. We pray with our fellow Louisianans to never allow the hate to dictate to our way of life and for the safety of all law enforcement.

News Bytes CONGRESS TO CONSIDER ANTI-MOTORCYCLE PROFILING RESOLUTION House Resolution 831 was introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives on July 13, 2016 to “Promote awareness of motorcycle profiling and encourage collaboration and communication with the motorcycle community and law enforcement officials to prevent instances of profiling.”The non-binding resolution defines motorcycle profiling as “the arbitrary practice of law enforcement using the fact that a person rides a motorcycle or wears motorcycle related apparel as a factor in deciding to stop and question, take enforcement action, arrest, or search a person or vehicle with or without legal basis under the United States Constitution,” and cites complaints surrounding motorcycle profiling in all 50 states. The National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM) is working with other state and national motorcycle organizations to address profiling legislatively, and with Washington enacting the first anti-profiling law in 2011, followed recently by Maryland, a national motorcycle anti-profiling measure would advance the efforts in every state.H.Res.831 specifies that the House of Representatives: (1) promotes increased public awareness on the issue of motorcycle profiling; (2) encourages collaboration and communication with the motorcycle community and law enforcement to engage in efforts to end motorcycle profiling; and (3) urges State law enforcement officials to include statements condemning motorcycle profiling in written policies and training materials.H.Res.831, introduced by Congressmen Reid Ribble (R-WI) and Tim Walberg (R-MI), has been referred to the House Committee on the Judiciary, and concerned motorcyclists are encouraged to contact their federal representatives to support the bill.

MARINE CORPS PROHIBITS “GANG COLORS OR SYMBOLS” ON CAMP PENDLETON “Open and visible association with supremacist, extremist, or criminal gangs, to include outlaw motorcycle gangs, by individuals aboard Marine Corps Base, Camp Pendleton (Calif.) poses a criminal and security threat; inhibits the mission of MCB CamPen; interferes with the loyalty, morale, good order, and discipline of MCB CamPen personnel; and discredits the reputation of the installation and the United States Marine Corps,” states MCIWEST-MCB CAMPEN ORDER 5530.2 dated 30 June 2016, and orders that “…the wearing or displaying of supremacist, extremist or criminal gang colors and symbols by any person aboard MCB CamPen is hereby prohibited.”Effective upon the date of signature, the order from Brigadier General Edward Banta, commanding general of Camp Pendleton, is pursuant to an earlier directive in which “the Secretary of Defense was directed to prescribe regulations prohibiting active participation by members of the Armed Forces in a criminal street gang.”In compiling their “list of ‘outlaw’ motorcycle clubs/gangs whose conduct is prohibited,” among the twenty enumerated clubs named are the Legacy/Vietnam Vets, Boozefighters and Iron Order, and “Therefore, wearing identifying gang symbols or colors of clothing (to include motorcycle vests) associated with these organizations is prohibited.”

MICHIGAN CITY MAKES IT EASIER TO TICKET LOUD MOTORCYCLES Royal Oak, Michigan is making it easier for police to ticket revving motorcycles, noisy cars and loud music. City Commissioners recently approved a new ordinance making it a civil infraction with a fine of up to $100 for vehicles to emit music, vibrations or noise that can be heard from 50 feet away or more. The Police Chief requested the ordinance amendment under the city’s disorderly conduct code that covers disturbing the peace and noise. Previously, such violations were a criminal misdemeanor, which have a higher burden of proof for police. The new measure adopted July 13, 2016 makes the noise violations a civil infraction with no criminal penalties and a lesser burden of proof to make violations stand up in court. With noise tickets being handled as criminal misdemeanors and requiring proof beyond a reasonable doubt, police have had a challenge stopping violators.“It’s above a seat belt violation but below a moving violation,” said the Chief of the civil infraction penalty, adding that the new local law will help police address public noise problems from motorcycles and other vehicles with after-market upgrades and louder mufflers.Officers writing tickets for noise violations before the new change in the ordinance had to carry devices to measure decibel levels at the time the violations happened. Under the new measure, the City Attorney said it would be sufficient for officers to use the patrol vehicle cameras and outside microphones when issuing noise violations.

”REGISTERING “AUTOCYCLES” AS MOTORCYCLES IN NEW JERSEY; VETO S-1155 Despite lobbying efforts launched by ABATE of the Garden State, the New Jersey state Senate and Assembly disregarded input from motorcyclists and approved a bill that will register so-called “Autocycles” (typically a 3-wheeled vehicle with a steering wheel and cockpit) as motorcycles. As states across the country legislatively define Autocycles as a separate class of vehicle, and similar federal regulations loom, Trenton bucks the trend.“Both Houses have approved a version that will register Autocycles as Motorcycles,” writes ABATE of the Garden State in an e-mail request for legislative action, further disseminated through the National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM) to NCOM Member Groups; “The only hope is to convince the Governor that this is an inappropriate action so that he vetoes the bill.”Please address your concerns to New Jersey Governor Chris Christie at constituent.relations@nj.gov, and ask that he veto S-1155 (Regulates autocycles as motorcycles), because “Autocycles bear no resemblance to motorcycles and have more in common operationally with two-seater sports cars,” and in addition “NHTSA is currently in the process of issuing a nationwide regulation that would mandate a completely new class of vehicle called ‘Autocycle’,” so “if S-1155 is enacted it will have to be repealed to comply with the new federal regulation.”ABATE further explains; “This will cost the taxpayers of New Jersey a lot of unnecessary expenditures, and allow the misclassified Autocycles to avoid vehicle safety regulation in the interim.”

SOUTH CAROLINA LAW RESTRICTS OPERATORS WITH BEGINNER’S PERMITS A person with a beginner’s permit in South Carolina is only allowed to operate a motorcycle solo between the hours of 6am and 6pm, and under the new traffic code changes “A permittee may not operate a motorcycle at any other time unless accompanied by

a licensed motorcycle operator twenty-one years of age or older who has at least one year of driving experience.”S689, signed into law on June 7, 2106 by South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley, a staunch supporter of motorcyclists’ rights and safety, further requires that the supervising driver must “be within a safe viewing distance of the permittee when the permittee is operating a motorcycle or a three-wheeled vehicle.” FLASHING BRAKE LIGHTS NOW ALLOWED ON BIKES IN DELAWARE As promoted in the Delaware Division of Motor Vehicles Motorcycle Operator Manual, it is recommended to motorcycle operators that they temporarily flash brake lights when stopping in order to increase visibility to other motorists. There are aftermarket products available that will automatically flash the brake lights up to five times, but such strobes have been illegal in the Delaware Code under the prohibition on flashing lights. House Bill No. 114, signed into law by Governor Jack Markell on June 9, 2016, amends the traffic code to now allow bikes to be equipped with this safety equipment “when included in a motorcycle, Moped, or Motorized Scooter brake light system in which the brake lamp pulses rapidly for no more than five (5) seconds when the brake is applied, and then converts to a continuous light as a normal brake lamp until the time that the brake is released.” BIKERS ARE MORE ATTRACTIVE THAN DRIVERS The results of a new research study in England finally validate what we all know to be true: motorcycle riders are more attractive than car drivers. The study, by U.K. insurance specialists Carole Nash, asked over 1000 adults to rate the looks of the opposite sex when dressed in normal attire and riding kit. The aim of the experiment was to try and change perceptions of motorcyclists and overturn any negative stereotypes. In five out of six cases, members of the public dressed as motorcyclists were voted as more desirable than when dressed as drivers. It’s not just levels of attractiveness which came out in the bikers’ favor, because riders are also seen to have more positive personality traits - people who own a motorcycle are viewed as adventurous by a third of the opposite sex (34%), closely followed by daring (28%) and fun (26%).The research also revealed that “one in four blokes would pretend they owned a motorbike to impress a woman and almost a third (31%) said they’d go the whole way and learn to ride one if they knew it would impress a potential partner.”

GOLDWING AIRBAG RECALL Recall, after recall, after recall, one thing has remained constant in the Takata airbag quagmire: The disaster has been confined to the fourwheeled realm. Not any longer, as the Honda Goldwing, the first and so far the only motorcycle equipped with an airbag from the factory, has now been recalled. The gist of the recall is the same, two wheels or four -Takata’s airbag inflators can rupture, potentially propelling shards of metal shrapnel at the vehicle’s occupants. Or in this case, the motorcycle riders. A total of 2,701 motorcycles are involved in this recall, spanning the 2006 through 2010 model years, and only in certain regions. Only Goldwings sold or operated in areas with high humidity or frequent temperature cycling are being recalled at this time. LONDON SET TO SURCHARGE OLDER MOTORCYCLES Another European capital city has committed to hitting riders of older motorcycles with a fee in an attempt to improve EU air quality.Recently, Paris announced a ban on motorcycles made before 1999 from certain parts of the city during the day. Violators of the ban face a €35 (US $40) fine. The French capital has some of the worst air pollution in the world, and the thinking behind the new law is that older motorcycles will not have been built to meet Euro emissions standards and are therefore inclined to pollute disproportionately.London, too, is desperate to reduce its pollution levels, which are consistently in violation of EU regulations. Within the first week of 2016, London exceeded its pollution limit for the entire year. The British capital has long had a daily congestion charge -- currently set at £11.50 (US $17) -- to discourage cars from entering the heart of the city. Motorcycles and scooters have hitherto been exempt from the charge, but plans are in the works to start charging two-wheeled vehicles made before 2007, when Euro 3 emissions standards were first applied to motorcycles. London motorcyclists have known about this and were expecting to see the charge applied when London introduces its new Ultra Low Emission Zone in 2020, but it is now being reported that the charge could be implemented as soon as next year, and concerned riders have expressed anger at the possibility of a sped-up schedule. LOUISIANA THUNDER RUN RIDE N’ WIN CONTEST ********** MARCH-OCTOBER 2016

A little boy and a little girl attended the same school and became friends. Every day they would sit together to eat their lunch. They discovered that they both brought chicken sandwiches every day! This went on all through the fourth and fifth grades, until one day he noticed that her sandwich wasn’t a chicken sandwich. He said, “Hey, how come you’re not eating chicken, don’t you like it anymore?” She said “I love it but I have to stop eating it.” “Why?” he asked. She pointed to her lap and said “Cause I’m starting to grow little feathers down there!”. “Let me see” he said. “Okay”, and she pulled up her skirt. He looked and said, “That’s right. You are! Better not eat any more chicken.”He kept eating his chicken sandwiches until one day he brought peanut butter. He said to the little girl, “I have to stop eating chicken sandwiches, I’m starting to get feathers down there too!” She asked if she could look, so he pulled down his pants for her. She raised her eyebrow at him and said “Oh my, it’s way too late for you! You’ve already got the neck and the gizzards.” The football coach noticed that his star tackle, “Boner”, had so many women hanging around that he couldn’t possibly handle all of them. So one day he asked Boner “Just what the hell is your secret, kid?” Boner replies, “Well, Coach, whenever I’m about to have sex, I always whip it out and bang it on the dresser like a hammer. That numbs it up, and I can screw ‘em till they beg me to stop!” The coach went home early one day and went to the bedroom. He heard his wife in the shower. Seeing a window of opportunity, he tore off his clothes and started bangin’ the hell out of his “wanker” on the dresser. His wife stuck her head out of the shower and yells out, “That you Boner, baby? Come on in sugar.......the water just feels divine.” This morning on Hwy. 12, I looked over to my left and there was a woman in a brand new Cadillac doing 65 mph with her face up next to her rear view mirror, putting on her eyeliner. I looked away for a couple seconds...to continue shaving; and when I looked back she

was halfway over in my lane, still working on that makeup. As a man, I don’t scare easily, but she scared me so much; I dropped my electric shaver, which knocked the donut out of my other hand. In all the confusion of trying to straighten out the car using my knees against the steering wheel, it knocked my cell phone away from my ear, which fell into the coffee between my legs! splashed and burned “Big Jim and the Twins”, ruined the damn phone, soaked my trousers, and disconnected an important call. Damn women drivers! Ma was in the kitchen fiddlin’ around when she hollers out....”Pa! You need to go out and fix the outhouse!” Pa replies, “There ain’t nuthin wrong with the outhouse.” Ma yells back, “Yes there is, now git out there and fix it.” So......Pa mosies out to the outhouse, looks around and yells back, “Ma! There ain’t nuthin wrong with the outhouse! “ Ma replies, “Stick yur head in the hole!” Pa yells back, “I ain’t stickin’ my head in that hole!” Ma says, “Ya have to stick yur head in the hole to see what to fix.” So with that, Pa sticks his head in the hole, looks around and yells back, “Ma! There ain’t nuthin wrong with this outhouse!” Ma hollers back, “Now take your head out of the hole!” Pa proceeds to pull his head out of the hole, then starts yelling, “Ma! Help! My beard is stuck in the cracks in the toilet seat!” To which Ma replies, “Hurt’s, don’t it?” A Georgia preacher said to his congregation, “Someone in this congregation has spread a rumor that I had belonged to the Ku Klux Klan. It is a horrible lie and one which a Christian community cannot tolerate. I am embarrassed and do not intend to accept this. Now, I want the party who did this to stand and ask forgiveness from God and this Christian Family.” No one moved. The preacher continued, “Do you not have the nerve to face me and admit this is a falsehood? Remember, you will be forgiven, and in your heart you will feel glory. Now stand and confess your transgression.” Again all was quiet. Then slowly, a drop-dead gorgeous redhead with a body that would stop traffic rose from the third pew. Her head was bowed and her voice quivered as she spoke. “Reverend, there has been a terrible misunderstanding. I never said you were a member of the Ku Klux Klan. I simply told a couple of my friends that you were an absolute Wizard under the sheets.” If you’re headed to Sturgis & in any bar, stand up & yell out........THUNDER ROADS ROCK N’ ROLL!! “Squiggy” and his wife, Joletta, are having hard financial times, so they decide she’ll become a hooker. She’s not quite sure what to do, so “Squig” says, “Stand in front of that bar and pick up a guy. Tell him a hundred bucks. If you’ve got a question, I’ll be parked around the corner.” She’s not there five minutes when a guy pulls up and says, “How much? Joletta says, “A hundred dollars.” Guy says “Dang, All I’ve got is thirty.” She says, ”Hold on.” She runs back to Squiggy and says, “What can he get for thirty dollars?” Squig ponders and says, “A hand job”. She runs back and tells the guy all he gets for thirty dollars is a hand job. He says okay, so she gets in the car, he unzips his pants, and out pops an astonishing HUGE pecker. Joletta stares at it for a minute, and then says, “I’ll be right back.” She runs back around the corner and says breathlessly, “Squig,, you reckon you can lend this guy seventy bucks?”.

THE HUNGARIAN OPEN ROAD FEST 2016 By Glenn C. Mcgovern Motorcycle Attorney, Msf Instructor & V.P. GNO ABATE e-mail: gcmcg@mac.com 17th Annual Harley-Davidson Open Road Festival The 17th Annual Harley-Davidson Open Road Fest is one of the many premier motorcycle events in Europe. I had the opportunity to attend this event in Hungary between June 8-11, 2016, with my wife, daughter, a rental bike and a VIP pass for the week. The time spent at the Open Road Fest was precious for many reasons: --scenic rides across breathtakingly beautiful country of Hungary, --spending time with family, especially my daughter, --enjoying the company of friendly riders (some in costumes), an unbelievable variety of motorcycles, and many fun events like guided road tours, a parade and a poker run, in addition to the Jack Daniel rodeos, helicopter rides, bungee jumping, Jeep obstacle démonstration rides, a Honda safety exhibit with simulators and stunt rides, such as the death globe stunt rider, unicycle and bike stunts, freestyle riding and more — blowing traffic rules while having Hungarian police escort, riding in a parade with dirt bikes and quads without license plates, bikes with 3 people on them, people riding without helmet and others with beer. We had looked at the promotional and documentary videos of the Open Road Fest on YouTube and knew we had to go to this special event. Unlike other adult-only bike events, this looked like great fun for the whole family. First I was hesitant to go, not speaking any Hungarian. Hungarian is a tough language to learn, one of only few languages Rosetta Stone does not offer a course for. Luckily, most Hungarians do speak some English. But when I saw the video on the event I thought, “These guys are bikers. They talk and look like bikers in the US. I’ll be okay.” So I decided to attend with my 9-year-old daughter Elena who is fluent in Hungarian and my wife Erika, who is a native Hungarian. We flew from New Orleans to Budapest, Hungary. After recovering from the 18-hour transatlantic flight, we were ready for Open Road. PREPARATION All you need to drive a motorcycle in Europe is a US driver’s license with motorcycle endorsement and an international driver’s license. You can get an International Driver’s License from AAA for $15 if you are an AAA member. I found a motorcycle rental company called

“moto24.hu” located in Érd, about 10 miles south of Budapest (phone: +36-70-219-7959, e-mail: info@moto24.hu). We drive to Érd. On the way there, Erika explains European traffic rules and road signs. I pay careful attention, not wanting to use my traveler’s medical insurance plan with air ambulance coverages for an emergency in a crash. We finally arrive at Érd. We are greeted by the owner who speaks excellent English. Turns out he lived in Washington DC for some time, he had a scholarship at the Smithsonian Museum as a historian researching the American Civil War. Moto24.hu rentals has a nice shop with a wide choice of motorcycles from BMW, Kawasaki, Suzuki cruisers, sport bikes and scooters, all for rent at reasonable rates. Insurance for liability and theft is included. They supply safety riding gear for free, too, but we brought our own. Our helmets have new Sena 20S Bluetooth intercoms. We get all our papers signed and insurance documents and interstate road toll passes for the motorcycle. In 30 minutes we are on our way. Being short I rented a Suzuki V-Strom with top storage to hold our gear. The owner, seeing that I was planning on a lot of riding, added two huge side storage units to the V-Strom, as well. This was great, I could store all my gear on trips around Lake Balaton and back and forth to the Open Road Bike Fest. My wife Erika saw another added benefit of the panniers, an extra protection for our daughter’s legs on the back. We took the bike back to Erika’s mom in Pomáz (even she remarked how great the bike looked), packed our gear and rested overnight before heading south to Lake Balaton next morning. Elena wakes me up at 5 am fully dressed and she is just as excited as me! We leave Pomáz with our rental bike with Erika leading the way. Traffic in Budapest is terrible after 6:30 am so we take winding, hilly country roads to get around Budapest and the Suzuki V-Strom handles these rough country roads great. Our quite scenic route 26 THUNDER ROADS MAGAZINE LOUISIANA

also includes the village of Felcsút, hometown of the current prime minister and the Puskás Soccer Academy, which even has a heated field! In the suburbs of Székesfehérvár, a former coronation town of Hungary, we enter the M7 expressway. The Suzuki V-Strom is near its limits at 130 kilometers speeds but it gets the job done. The Hungarian drivers are courteous and very capable. The M highways are excellent, they are like interstates here in the US. Top speeds are 130 kilometers or about 80 mph. The many large semi-tractor trailer trucks on the highways passed with care. The side roads and in-town roads are another story. They are very narrow — not wide enough for two cars in many sections. Some sections of the roads are washed out and only 3/4 of the surface is usable. There are large bumps in the roads that you must navigate around or go over carefully. They don’t have a large number of gas stations in the countryside but the V-Strom has way over 300 kilometers (near 200 miles) range on a single tank. This is good for this mission. Range is not a problem. The police are visible everywhere. There are also video cameras so you can get ticketed by mail and fined. If you get a ticket by police, they pull you over and fine you right there on the spot. If you can’t pay immediately, they seize your motorcycle. They are very professional, most speak English and are friendly. There is zero tolerance for alcohol or drugs in your system. In the US you can have some alcohol in your system. Not in Europe with its zero tolerance. If caught with alcohol in your system, your driving privileges are suspended for a year or more plus heavy fines. Unlike the US, everyone uses turn signals. If you don’t in the roundabouts or drive with high beams on cut in front of a passing car, the police will ticket you. We are very careful. Navigating the strange roundabouts where you

must use your turn signals on exiting is somewhat stressful at first, but it becomes second nature. For this 3-hour trip to Lake Balaton the V-Strom is great, the comfortable passenger and rider seats, the lack of vibration and soft suspension are perfect for this mission. We can accelerate up to 130 kilometers and are careful to use all our MSF taught street strategies to avoid any crashes. The hospitals in Hungary are not the greatest. Be sure to get medical insurance with air ambulance coverage on any trip to Europe. It is not expensive and you can be facing a $50,000 air ambulance bill to the US in the event of a serious crash. After 165 kilometers with one espresso stop at a Székesfehérvár gas station to top off fuel we arrive at the family cottage at Lake Balaton. The view from the second floor is breathtaking. The sound of Harleys with loud pipes and sport bikes is everywhere! We wave to everyone on a motorcycle and they all wave back. DAY 1 The location is stunning, on the 50-mile long beautiful Lake Balaton, in the resort town of Alsóörs. The lake’s width varies between 1 and 8 miles and it has a clear crystal blue color. The northern shore is filled with rolling hills, deep valleys and purple fields of blooming lavender. Narrow roads wind around the lake through the mountains and valleys, the view is breathtaking. There are many small restaurants, bars and hotels to stop at along the way. The Alsóörs location for the 17th Annual HarleyDavidson Open Road Festival is perfect. In the center of the festival grounds is the Harley Museum displaying vintage Harley-Davidsons, flanked by rows of vendor booths and huge concert stages. These are surrounded by streets of camping tents and cabins (trailers) — everything right on the lake’s edge. You can visit the festival site and jump in Lake Balaton, then go back to enjoy the many stunt shows or bands that perform until 3:00 am each day of the festival. We are excited and rush to the Open Road Fest site to just make the guided tour at 13:00 (1:00 pm) local time. It is only 1.5 kilometers from our cottage. We check in the registration area. We get our computer-chipped wristband passes at the pickup point. You can also buy credits that are applied to your wrist band to pay for food and gifts in the Open Road Fest vendor areas. I attract a lot of looks with my ABATE hat with the American flag and GNO ABATE Chapter patches. They all know where New Orleans is. We find one more person from the US there at the Open Road Fest besides Erika, Elena and myself. There are all types of bikes from all over Europe, including Switzerland, U.K., Italy, Czech Republic, Slovenia, Austria, Germany. and Russia. Some riders have flags on their bikes. They ride mostly Harleys but many came on sport bikes, vintage two-stroke Jawa’s, CZ’s, BMW flat heads, huge custom trikes, Russian sidecars complete with

ammo cans, other sidecars, mopeds, scooters — we see bikes of all models and years. Everyone has a passenger it seems — even the 50 cc Vespas! They are pouring into the Fest by road and ferry. The ferry across Lake Balaton has a band on it for the Open Road Fest. Excitement is in the air. We rush to get back to the V-Strom after registering for the day’s Road Tour. The Road Tour event is put on by the Hungarian Budapest HOG Chapter. We ride with the president of the chapter and three very professional police officers with RENDŐR (police) on their road jackets. Two have BMW boxers motorcycles and one has a Harley Road Glide with a huge set of lights and unbelievably loud siren speakers. We are late to line up with the road tour due to getting lost in the huge site with tight security. Elena and I have new Sena intercoms and that worked great. We just manage to line up as the group is departing. We leave with our police escort through the town with sirens screaming. One of the HOG leaders has a huge banner on a pole waiving in the breeze through traffic. The police stop traffic at each traffic light and past road construction sites. They wiz by up and down the group at very high speeds but totally in control of the group and traffic. Impressive. I feel much safer with them by our side. We scream through the country side over the speed limits. Elena is enjoying all this. We ride by the most beautiful fields, valleys, and lakes surrounding Lake Balaton. Elena is in awe of the whole event. I am too. It is a memorable experience like no other. We arrive in Zirc, at a small agricultural community and resort farm. We line up the bike — all Harleys except for us — and eat a huge lunch. Alcoholic beer is served in huge German style stein. Everyone has large beers but Elena, me and the three police officers. We were told not to drink alcohol on the trip beforehand but with a wink and a nod. Apparently this rule like the speed limits are not enforced when you travel with your own private police escort. We have a huge all-you-can-eat sausage, potatoes and steak dinner. Then we all get in a tractor-pulled cart to partake in clay pigeon shooting. This farm is a small resort and has a pool, cabins, clubhouse, bar, dining rooms, pool tables. The fellow riders are all Hungarians and have been coming to Open Road Fest for 11 years. All are members of the 20-year old Budapest HOG Chapter that is sponsoring the event with the Budapest Harley dealer. They take good care of us and constantly ask both me and Elena if we are having a good time and if we need anything. They are enchanted with Elena who speaks fluent Hungarian. Some of the group dresses like 1-percenters, but are actually all older professionals who love Harleys. Many have club jackets with club patches. It seems they have some 1-percenters in Hungary like the Hell’s Angels of Budapest, but 99% are older professional men and women. We talk about bikes in the US and Hungary over dinner THUNDER ROADS MAGAZINE LOUISIANA 27

as several speak very good English. Elena talks to them in Hungarian and they are amused. She looks so cute in her riding gear. I think about her and realize she is growing up too fast. I am so glad we had the father-daughter time and this adventure together. We return to Lake Balaton and the Harley-Davidson Open Road Fest site. A lot to do: helicopter rides, bungee jumping, a Honda safety exhibit with simulators, in addition to the Jack Daniel mechanical bull. There are demos and and unbelievable stunt riders every day. There are rows of vendors of gifts, motorcycle clothing, jewelry and Hungarian food and alcoholic beverages. Hungarian wine is fantastic with a high alcoholic content with lots of kick to it. There is so much to do, you have to pick and choose each day. What is especially nice is that wives and kids can enjoy the event, too. We return to our cottage near the site. We can still hear the music from 1.2 kilometers echoing over the Lake until dawn. We are exhausted from the 4-hour guided tour and enjoying the exhibits, stunt riders and over-eating. Hungarian food is spicy and delicious. We clean up the V-Strom for tomorrow and get ready for the excitement the next day will bring. Elena loved the tour. She now recommends that I get rid of my Aprilia Tuono sport bike and get a big cruiser for her to ride on

with me. This is a shocking revelation as before she said she would not ride on the back of a bike but only in a sidecar like we have at home. Erika asks about the ride. Elena tells about the police motorcycle escort, the other bikers, the challenges of the trip on a motorcycle. She starts one of her sentences with “We, bikers.” Apparently Elena is now becoming one! This trip is worth it just so I have a riding buddy for life — or at least until she starts driving and dating boys! Part two next month

REBEL ON THE HIGHWAY

R

ebel On The Highway is a soon to be released biker movie that is being produced by none other than Bikers Inner Circle Internet Radio’s (www. BICProductions.com) - Charlie Brechtel along with Executive Producer Dennis Sanfillipo. You might know of “Good Time” Charlie from the Charlie Brechtel Band that you can always see at the Buffalo Chip every year tearing up the stage with his own sound and songs for and about bikers and the motorcycle lifestyle. Charlie and his band are booked at biker events all over the country and as far away as Russia. Charlie has a great appreciation for the history of the motorcycling lifestyle and is always looking to help raise money for the Sturgis Museum (www. SturgisMuseum.com) where a lot of that history can be found. It is with his sense of history and respect for the long standing biker traditions that Charlie along with an extensive cast of characters began making this movie. This film is unique in that you won’t find any Hollywood professional actors or film crew involved as the crew is entirely made up of bikers. The movie production has been catching attention all across the country with scenes being filmed in several different states along with the support from local clubs that are cast as movie extras in numerous scenes. You can follow along the way to find out about upcoming film locations and watch movie outtakes on its Facebook page at Rebel-On-The-HighwayThe- Movie. Here is an inside glimpse about the movie: An ambitious musician tries to ‘make it big’ when after a

Goodtime Charlie chance encounter with the devil – Charlie is offered all the success that he dreams of (but when you deal with the devil there is always a price to pay). You can’t help but to cheer Charlie along as he fights to get his life back on the right track once he recognizes that all his sudden success was due to the devil. When the devil comes to get him to sign the contract for his soul, Charlie refuses and takes off to get his life back on track again. The message behind this story has the makings for a great movie for the entire family as the lessons of choosing the right path in life and to avoid the pitfalls regardless of how enticing the wrong direction may look. Now for the rest of the story you will just have to go watch the movie when it premieres! And since this movie has been filmed all across the country - you just might see a familiar face or two. So stay tuned - there will be a series of viewings across the country at local theaters! Rebel On The Highway will premiere in July 2017 which also happens to be the same month as the movie Easy Rider came out in 1969. The timing is out of respect for and a tribute to this iconic motorcycle movie.
