Maritime Biker

by Captain Steve

There is another mode of delivering workers to their prospective platforms, I always nicknamed Air Taxis.

gmail.com and each month we pay homage to a hardworking maritime biker !

This month, we want to show you that all offshore jobs are not necessarily about the water but can be seen in the skies above the gulf waters too...There are just as may crew members that are transported to the rigs by helicopters and then by crew boat for that “ crew change” we all wait for... This month we would like to put a little twist on things and pay homage to two of our sky pilots and in this case “Aviation Bikers”, who are out there flying over the gulf and beyond, delivering our crew members to and from the rigs, landing on tiny helipads, and getting our guys home safely. These guys are Maritime Bikers in their own right... They work hitches and shifts just like myself and others on the boats and rigs. And... like the rest of us, they love to ride, feeling the wind in their face, seeming like they are flying on the ground. The first pilots I’d like to recognize are Cpt. Ricky Leblanc and SIC John Bering, two helicopter pilots that have been friends for over 15 years working the same shift. And.... they also, share the love of their bikes. They have a combined flying time of over 50 years with both of them learning to fly from Uncle Sam, serving our country during Desert Storm/ Shield and then working in the gulf when they returned home. Capt. Ricky LeBlanc from Abbeville has been flying over the gulf for 35 years after flying for Uncle Sam and flying a Sikorsky S-92 at work and flying at home on his newest bike, (his new trike), that he put 22,000 miles on it in just 2 years. SIC John Bering has been flying in the gulf for 20 years and currently flies a Sikorsky S-76 at work and at home flies a sweet 04 Road King, a lil bit slower. He’s running at a different pace, running for office and he’s the Legislative Director for A.B.A.T.E. Teche Chapter, but still logging in some miles on that sweet Road King.... There’s Ricky and John’s stories, keep the thunder rolling and tell me yours.... If you would like to be featured as one of our hardworking Maritime Bikers send me pictures of your work, your ride and a story of what you do and what you ride for tocaptstevetrmla@

Life’s a hitch ! So keep working hard and keep the shiny side up !

Uninsured Motorists Coverage-A True Story of Mr. C Biker

By Glenn C. McGovern, Attorney and MSF Instructor We recently had a case with a motorcyclist that illustrates signed. Mr. C never accepted the driver’s $15,000 policy so how important it is to know about uninsured motorist’s Mr. C can pursue his uninsured motorists claim. insurance (i.e. UM coverage). (It also illustrates how important the articles in Thunder Roads Magazine can $15,000 minimum insurance coverage a big problem for be for motorcyclists!) The following true story shows how motorcyclists One of the big problems for injured motorists important not signing an uninsured motorist waiver can be. and motorcyclists is the bad Louisiana insurance law that We’ll call our motorcyclists Mr. C. This is actual case. only requires $15,000 liability insurance for accidents to be carried by motorists and motorcyclists. In other words, if you Here is the true story of biker Mr. C: are maimed or killed in an automobile accident in Louisiana, Mr. C, a biker had only a $15,000 policy for liability and chances are the person at fault may only have $15,000 in has signed a waiver of uninsured motorist coverage. Mr. C insurance policy limits. The only total required liability limits then read one of my articles in Thunder Roads Louisiana are $15,000 per person injured in each accident. Unless you Magazine on the importance of motorcyclists not signing an purchase uninsured motorist’s coverage (i.e. UM coverage) uninsured motorist’s waiver and having uninsured motorist’s at extra costs, you are left unprotected from uninsured insurance coverage. Mr. C read the Thunder Roads motorists or under insured motorists. Louisiana Magazine article I wrote and immediately ordered a $250,000 liability and uninsured motorist’s coverage. The Why ever motorcyclists need higher UM motorcycle agent placed the $250,000 liability coverage and a new coverage in Louisiana Imagine being killed or disabled policy was issued—but the agent failed to also write the and your family or you only can recover a maximum of policy with uninsured motorist’s coverage as requested by $15,000 from a motorist who has the legal minimum Mr. C. The agent did write a new policy with $250,000 liability coverage. That is hardly enough to pay your medical bills limits only. Mr. C did not sign a waiver of uninsured motorist’s must less loss wages or for disability, pain and suffering. As coverage. 23 days later after getting the new $250,000 a motorcycle trial lawyer I see this kind of tragedy occur too policy, Mr. C while stopped at a traffic signal was hit from often, especially in motorcycle accident cases where the the rear by a pickup truck and thrown over 60 yards. Mr. C injuries are always severe. Louisiana’s uninsured motorist’s sustaining fractures of three lumbar bones in his lower back coverage differs from other state’s law. It assumes that and multiple other bone fractures. Mr. C hired me to help motorists have uninsured motorist’s coverage unless it is him. We put the insurer on notice of the claim. The insurer specifically rejected by signing a written waiver form. This denied the claim and said there was only a $15,000 policy can be very important. issued with no uninsured motorists coverage claiming Mr. C signed an uninsured motorist’s waiver for the $15,000 Louisiana’s uninsured motorist statutes Louisiana has policy which the insurer forwarded with the denial letter. Mr. a mandatory uninsured motorist (UM) or underinsured C was adamant he purchased another $250,000 policy with insurance statute. That means that, in Louisiana, a person uninsured motorist’s insurance. The insurer initially denied buying automobile insurance is presumed to have also such a policy was issued. Suit was then filed including bought uninsured or under insured coverage. Louisiana allegations of misrepresentation and fraud. In discovery it law specifically requires that the individual purchasing the was found Mr. C had called his agent and raised his limits insurance policy reject such coverage if the coverage is not of his $15,000 liability policy to $250,000 limits. A $250,000 going to be included. Louisiana actually has a form that the policy was issued but with no uninsured motorists coverage individual purchasing the policy will have to sign in order for on the policy. The agent did not add uninsured motorist the UM or under insured coverage to be rejected. coverage---but Mr. C never signed an uninsured motorist’s waiver. Because Mr. C materially changed his coverage’s to Mr. C’s story shows how important UM is and to $250,000 and did not sign an uninsured motorist’s waiver, never sign a UM waiver Since Mr. C never rejected such Mr. C had uninsured motorist’s coverage under Louisiana coverage the Courts will hold that they are entitled to UM or law. This was important since the driver only had a $15,000 under insured coverage unless they have specifically signed automobile liability policy. Mr. C’s medical bills were over off on the rejection form. The insurer, not having a UM $39,000. The insurance company has now admitted Mr. C waiver from Mr. C agreed to pay the policy limits. has uninsured motorist’s coverage for $250,000 since they could not find any uninsured motorists waiver the Mr. C ever MORALE OF OUR MR. C STORY- MAKE SURE YOU PURCHASE UNINSURED MOTORISTS (UM) COVERAGE THROUGH YOUR INSURANCE AGENT TO PROTECT YOU. What UM coverage do you need? It depends on your situation. Consider sufficient limits to protect you of at least $500,000 UM alone and at least $1,000,000 if you have dependent children. You can buy $15,000/$30,000 liability limits and $500,000 or more UM coverage. You have to be given the option to buy it. You have to waive it in writing. Take advantage of it. All of us need to make sure we have adequate uninsured motorist’s liability coverage to protect our children, wives and us from economic disaster a serious accident can cause to our loved ones. continued next page

10 Things You Learn When Your Mom Rides a Motorcycle By: Danielle Sylvia

6) Being tough is about more than just knowing how to throw a punch. 1) Feeling confident is not about how many people like Sure many of us had moms who taught us how to punch for you. It is about how you see yourself. when we absolutely needed to fight but for all of us fighting For many it can take years to figure out that self-confidence is was always seen as a last resort. When you have a biker really just a big fancy hyphenated word for “I feel good about mom you notice that she is going to take a lot of flak from myself.” For some reason we have gotten it into our heads that men who ride motorcycles, from other women who think they we can’t be confident about ourselves unless other people like know something about her, and from many others. But our us. But when your mom rides a motorcycle you learn the truth moms never let this bother them. They knew that talk was just at an early age. That leather jacket she wears does more than talk and they let it roll off their shoulders because sometimes just protect her from the cold winds whipping by her as she knowing when to ignore someone’s ignorant comment is goes 80 miles an hour down the highway. That leather jacket tougher than kicking them in the teeth. tells everyone that she is one tough woman and she is not to be messed with. A good jacket is as much about making you 7) Always be true to yourself. feel good as it is about keeping you warm. Which brings me to the seventh thing your biker mom taught you, always be true to yourself. Even though your mom 2) Never judge a book by its cover. might have had to listen to a lot of people complain about her Many bikers have tattoos and to the rest of the world this motorcycle she never let that stop her from being her, not even makes them look “trashy” or “scary.” But to those of us that for one tiny little second. In the end the only way to be happy is were raised by a biker mom we know that tattoos are pieces to always be yourself. of art that you wear on your skin to show the rest of the world 8) You may and should wear whatever makes you happy. who you are and judging someone because they choose to express themselves in a way that is different from your own is Our moms wore leather jackets and blue Levi jeans most days but occasionally they broke out the leather miniskirt and the silly. long, thigh high boots. Or maybe they puttered around out in 3) A woman can do anything she wants to do. And she the yard in a sundress. Or maybe one day mom decided she can do it as well as or better than a man can! was going to wear a belly shirt. Biker moms wear whatever People think that only men can be bikers but that is the they want, whenever they want. They don’t worry about being farthest thing from the truth. Our motorcycle mamas showed “too girly” or about appearing to be “too boyish” or “manly.” No, us every day that women can be anything they want to be. biker moms wear what they like. And they taught us that too. 4) Never let one label define every thing about who you are. Moms who ride motorcycles are the epitome of this rule. When people see them on the street they would never guess that these women not only ride motorcycles, dress in leather, and have tattoos but they also bake cookies, tell the best stories, create arts and crafts with their children, and much more. Being a biker was never the only thing that defined your mom and it never will be. 5) Family is not always just blood. One of the reasons our moms ride motorcycles is because of the sisterhood that comes with it. Women bikers tend to stick together and to support each other in much the same way that family would. We saw this every day growing up and it taught us that family is more than blood. It is a choice you make every day.

9) All women are beautiful and should be treated as such. Our biker mamas made sure to have lots of different women coming in and out of our homes all the time. These women came in all shapes and sizes and mom made sure to show love and respect to all of them. She never once made a mean comment about any woman for her hair, clothes, makeup, body type or appearance. In fact, she made a point to tell us what it was she loved about each of those women who she had adopted as her sisters. 10) You determine who you are, no one else. Biker moms never try to be anything that they are not. They never try to live up to anyone else’s expectations of who they should be. They just try to do their very best to teach us that we can be anything that we want to be.

Pastor’s Corner Today I want to share a little note from my heart. There are times when trusting God isn’t as easy as it sounds. Those times when your eyes can clearly see what happened. Those time when the diagnosis is clearly seen by the test results. Those times when our mind is constantly replaying its own results. Those times when the loudest voice is the voice of doubt, fear and as some would say “reality”. Over the years I have struggled with these same voices. I have faced many of the same situations and circumstances, that seemed to speak of my end. During these times some would tell me, “it is what it is, just except it”. Others would say, “there is nothing we can do”. When dealing with my failures, some would take the bible and beat me down with the “word of the Lord” (no disrespect intended here). Over the years I have learned that what I see today, what I am facing today, doesn’t define my tomorrow. “Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us,” Ephesians 3:20 NKJV God is always doing so much more. And with that in mind, It is my calling to love those God places in my life (even if they are unlovely ), To speak words of encouragement through the word of God. To challenge them to allow God to show them His plan for

their life. To show them scripture, pray with them, and be there during the difficult or joyful moments of their life. There are many today that have experienced God’s great love for them that at one time wouldn’t have even given God a chance to do anything. There are those who for no other reason But God are still living. I have decided that I am going to do what He has gifted me to do, and allow Him to do what He does best, and that is touch the situations, circumstances, and lives of His Children with His great love for them. “His love never fails, it never runs out, it never gives up on me...” (words from my favorite song). So today I just want you to know, that no matter what you are facing, where you are in life. I want you to know God loves you (He is for you), and I love you too. Together we will trust God, allow Him to work in our life. While I am not the man I want to be, I am thankful I’m not the man I use to be. “God’s still working on me”. Lipstick Riders Everyone needs something to believe in, but most importantly you need to believe in yourself.... This next Lipstick Rider has showed me that when you believe in yourself, anything is possible. And.. when you set your mind to it you can go the distance and accomplish many goals. Especially like when Jennifer Dugan of Alexandria, sets her mind to taking hardcore rides to prepare her for the upcoming HokaHey Challenge, where only a select few will be chosen to make the cross country journey from coast to coast ( they only have about 12 days to complete) ,armed with only paper maps and sleeping bags. Her idea of fun is taking off and seeing how many states they can ride through, and how many miles they can log in on one day... When they ride, they ride hard! The only way to go at life is hard... She’s going hard at life now and after a series of struggles she once again found herself back on top her game and it brought her to reconstructing her Dads 2001 Super Glide, a bike that had taken care of him for many miles and many runs. After almost losing a fight with an 18 wheeler and even after the time it broke down when her dad took her to Sturgis, she always loved that bike like she loved her Dad. Last year when she walked in their shed and she saw the bike that had been laid up for a couple years, she thought “that’s the one” ... That will be her dream bike when “that Cajun” Chris Hebert at Cajun Worx finishes putting her all together! So, while Chris is working on her bike she will be keeping busy with her own promo company called The Backwood Baby Dolls, that promotes rally’s, events and biker bars, or working hard as our newest columnist covering events for Thunder Roads Magazine, or selling people their dreams over at the local HD dealer in Alexandria... This is chick is one bad ass determined Lipstick Rider! Jennifer loves to help the bikers and their families in need. She works many benefits and has one of her own events she is organizing in April to help raise awareness and funding for Testicular Cancer, and urges all to come out to Renegade Harley Davidson on April 2nd to help “SAVE THE BALLS”. So, there’s Jennifer’s story, tell me yours! My goal in writing this column is to show everyone that we have some bad ass lipstick riders in Louisiana! Every day women that love to ride just as much as the guys do. It doesn’t matter what you ride, all that matters is THAT YOU RIDE.... I love getting to meet all of our lady riders out there and tell our readers about our lipstick riders. So, if you would like to be featured as one of our bad ass lipstick riders, send me your story and pictures tolipstick.riders. trmla@gmail.com and let your story be told. American Motorcyclist Association Announces Sanction For 2016 American Sportbike Racing Association Daytona 200 PICKERINGTON, Ohio -- The American Motorcyclist Association is pleased to announce that it will sanction the 75th running of the Daytona 200 on March 12 at Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Fla. “Without a doubt, the Daytona 200 is a historic motorcycle race, known not just by American riders but by riders around the world,” said AMA Director of Racing Bill Cumbow. “Indeed, with an AMA sanction, international riders governed by non-U.S. motorcycling federations can more easily secure the start permissions they need to compete at this storied event.” The American Sportbike Racing Association event is a standalone premier American road race. While the 2016 Daytona 200 is not part of the AMA-sanctioned professional road racing series in which riders earn points toward an AMA National No. 1 plate, it remains an important part of America’s motorcycle racing heritage.

News Bytes RIDING “OFF THE GRID” -- HOW TO ESCAPE GPS TRACKING ON YOUR MOTORCYCLE Freedom of the Road isn’t that free these days. “We often talk about what you can do to protect your privacy, but more often than not we accept the technology given to us by large corporations with government influence,” writes Gil Mellen, ABATE of California’s rep to the Southern California Confederation of Clubs (SCCOC), “And with that ease our phones store more than just our private information, they are a collection source for who we are, what we do and where we go 24/7.”Turning your phone off or on airplane mode doesn’t cut it either, he explains. In order to truly be undetectable to ANYONE you must use a first line of defense on your phone, such as Silent Pocket. By employing a Silent Pocket “Faraday cage” (conductive material surrounding a piece of equipment to exclude electrostatic and electromagnetic influences) you can block all wireless signals to and from your mobile device.Once placed inside the stylish leather case, your device is completely sealed -- No GPS tracking, NO cellular, NO wifi, NO Bluetooth, and NO RFID scanning or NFC in all frequencies. Additionally, Silent Pocket cases protect your financial information from credit card skimming and scanning. So if you’re heading to a large biker event and want no one to know your whereabouts, simply put your phone inside the case and wherever you go is OFF THE GRID. Once you remove your phone, any missed voicemails, data, or messages are downloaded. Your location is also known at that point.“Silent Pocket is in the privacy accessory market for the long haul.” stated Aaron Zar, Silent Pocket Co-Founder. “As the methods hackers use to compromise security continue to evolve, so will our products.”Silent Pocket is a proud supporter of SAVE THE PATCH and they offer an exclusive 15% off discount code for all BIKERS and ABATE MEMBERS at www.silentpocket.com: patch16 or call 831-531-8199 or e-mail sales@silent-pocket. com for bulk order discounts. BIKER ATTIRE ALLOWED IN NEW MEXICO COURTROOMS Declaring “A great victory for our community,” Annette Torrez, chair of the New Mexico Motorcycle Rights Organization (NMMRO) and National Coalition of Motorcyclists (NCOM) board of directors, announced that; We received the following message from Chief Justice Judge Nash concerning motorcycle vests in District Courthouse, “Please be informed that the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Department will NOT be requiring members of your organization to turn their vests inside out upon entry into the Second Judicial District Courthouse and its’ Courtrooms in the future.”The NMMRO and the NNMCOC (Northern New Mexico Confederation of Clubs) sent Judge Nash a letter regarding an issue in which Bernalillo Sheriff Officers were asking the Guardians of the Children to remove their vests and turn them inside out so none of the patches were visible. “These vests and patches are what identify them to the abused children who they are there to support in court under difficult circumstance as these children have to face their perpetrators or have to sometimes testify,” explained Torrez. “While we can all benefit from this victory, it is the abused children from our community who will benefit most, as now members of motorcycle community can continue to support and accompany them in court. Your voices were heard as we united in support.”Nash’s message specifically denotes “members of your organization” which is why “it is so important we as motorcyclists join and support the NMMRO, an organization that stands and fights for your rights, freedoms and liberties,” said Torrez, adding; “Thank you to Judge Nash for doing the right thing as we believe our 1st Amendment was being violated. We must also remember that we must be respectful at all times in our courthouse, we must be on our best behavior

so that we may continue to wear our patches and motorcycle related attire in the courthouse. I want to thank the Guardians of the Children for bringing this to our attention. Thank you to Double D from The Motorcycle Profiling Project and Attorney Dan Sorey for their support and advice in addressing this issue.” MANIFESTO ON THE MOTORCYCLE INDUSTRY AND FREEDOM OF THE ROAD “I read your recent (NCOM Biker Newsbytes) report and the piece about the NCOM board requesting input on motorcycle issues to discuss at the upcoming NCOM Convention,” writes Keith “Bandit” Ball of Bikernet.com and former editor of Easyriders magazine. “I have a major bitch and a project that could save the custom motorcycle aftermarket and place freedom at the forefront of our nation once more.”WHEN YOU CAN’T GIVE UP, WRITE -- A Brief Manifesto; “Sounds ominous but it’s not, then again it is a tough alteration to current government thinking. And I believe our industry could be at the forefront. Why can’t we prove that Freedom always needs to be a consideration? Why can’t we prove that all the custom motorcycles in the country will never have any significant impact on the environment and agencies need to leave us alone? If we were successful, this could place Freedom at the forefront in many applications from hot rods, to go carts, to speed boats.”As evidence of governmental regulation usurping personal rights, Ball (Bandit@Bikernet.com) submitted the following news release on behalf of SEMA (Specialty Equipment Market Association) entitled “EPA Seeks to Prohibit Conversion of Vehicles into Racecars”:“The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has proposed a regulation to prohibit conversion of vehicles originally designed for on-road use into racecars and make the sale of certain products for use on such vehicles illegal. The proposed regulation was contained within a non-related proposed regulation entitled ‘Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Fuel Efficiency Standards for Medium- and Heavy-Duty Engines and Vehicles - Phase 2’.The regulation would impact all vehicle types, including the sports cars, sedans and hatch-backs commonly converted strictly for use at the track. While the Clean Air Act prohibits certain modifications to motor vehicles, it is clear that vehicles built or modified for racing, and not used on the streets, are not the ‘motor vehicles’ that Congress intended to regulate.‘This proposed regulation represents overreaching by the agency, runs contrary to the law and defies decades of racing activity where EPA has acknowledged and allowed conversion of vehicles,’ said SEMA President and CEO Chris Kersting.Working with other affected organizations, including those representing legions of professional and hobbyist racers and fans, SEMA will continue to oppose the regulation through the administrative process and will seek congressional support and judicial intervention as necessary. The EPA has indicated it expects to publish final regulations by July 2016.” BILL IN WASHINGTON WOULD ALLOW MOTORCYCLES ON SHOULDERS IN TRAFFIC Washington State might give motorcyclists preferential treatment on some highways during traffic jams under a bill that has the support of the state Senate. The measure would give motorcyclists permission to drive on the far left shoulders of divided highways when traffic is moving under 25 miles an hour.“It really is about relieving congestion,” said State Senator Tim Sheldon (D-Mason County), the bill’s sponsor. He tried passing a bill last year that would have allowed what’s known as “lane splitting,” allowing bikers to ride between cars stopped in traffic, but that bill failed.Sen. Sheldon told CBS King5 News in Olympia that his proposal would alleviate traffic and make highways safer

for motorcycle riders in heavy traffic. ”When congestion basically stops traffic, a motorcyclist… they’re vulnerable to over-heating as well as being rear-ended.” KANSAS HOUSE SPEAKER GIVES HORSEPOWER TO 3-WHEELER REFORM BILL A House committee in Kansas kicked the tires of a bill creating a special driving examination and license for people who ride increasingly popular three-wheeled motorcycles. Under current Kansas law, individuals are required to take a test on a two-wheeled motorcycle even if they own and plan to ride a machine with three wheels. House Bill 2436 would establish a special class of motorcycle licensing that aligns the examination with the type of vehicle to be driven.Three-wheel licenses issued under the proposed law would forbid the person from legally riding a two-wheeled motorcycle, but anyone passing the two-wheel test could ride both motorcycle variations.House Speaker Ray Merrick (R-Stilwell) urged the House’s Vision 2020 Committee to endorse the “friendly, commonsense update to Kansas statutes.”“Considering the vast differences in the physical requirements between two- and three-wheeled motorcycles,” Merrick said, “it is reasonable that a person who can only ride a threewheeled motorcycle should be allowed to take their license training and test on the type of motorcycle they will be using.”Brian Thompson, a lobbyist with ABATE of Kansas, said the reform proposed by the House bill would benefit young and old riders alike. “Those with less skills would be able to feel the independence and freedom of the road if they desire,” Thompson told the Topeka Capital-Journal newspaper.

TEENAGER CAUTIONED AFTER SERIOUSLY INJURING MOTORCYCLIST A 14-year-old boy was recently “cautioned” by police after causing “life-changing injuries” to a motorcyclist by tying a rope between two trees on a woodland path. The 17-year-old rider was rushed to the hospital with serious neck and wind-pipe injuries after hitting the rope while riding in woods near St Neots, Cambridgeshire, UK, and he spent seven weeks in the hospital including two-and-a-half in an induced coma. The boy, who admitted responsibility under questioning by police, was issued a youth caution for causing grievous bodily harm without intent. He must also attend sessions with the Youth Offending Service.

MOTORCYCLE SPEEDER WINS $180,000 IN CASE AGAINST COP WHO BEAT HIM UP On Aug. 3, 2012, Justin Wilkens was speeding on his Aprilia motorcycle and unwittingly passed Oregon State Police Officer Rob Edwards in an unmarked cop Camaro. After a few minutes of chase, Edwards rammed Wilkens off the bike, pulled a gun on him and kicked him in the chest. If you think that sounds egregious, a jury agrees with you. Dash cam footage shows Wilkens’ motorcycle speeding past cars and crossing double-yellow (no passing zones) lines near Veneta, OR when the officer pulls up behind him at an intersection, hits the bike and knocks the biker to the ground. Edwards maintained this was unintentional; a result of “brake fade” from the Camaro’s discs being overworked. At this point in the footage, Edwards enters the frame and lands a kick to Wilkens’ chest while drawing down on him with his pistol before cuffing him. In an interesting plot twist, Edwards stated he did not know the police car’s NEW MOTORCYCLE HAZARD - TEENS WALKING WHILE DISTRACTED dashcam was running. Wilkens suffered a broken left clavicle, a fractured Motorcycle riders have a lot to watch for when cruising through an urban rib and other injuries in the incident. After being apprehended, Wilkens environment such as a city or town. While the first focus may be other brought an excessive-force claim against Edwards. As explained by local vehicles, a new study shows bikers should watch for teens crossing the news, a jury of eight people “awarded Wilkens more than $31,000 in road while distracted by their smartphone.According to research released economic damages to reimburse his medical expenses and motorcycle by Safe Kids Worldwide, with support from FedEx, distraction plays a role repair bills; $100,000 in noneconomic damages for his injuries, pain and as 50% of teens admit they cross streets while using a mobile device, suffering; and $50,000 in punitive damages,” which Officer Edwards will be and an alarming 40% admit to actually being hit or nearly hit by a car, bike forced to pay. or motorcycle while walking.Of the teens who have been hit or nearly hit report crossing the street while: 47% listening to music, 20% talking on QUOTABLE QUOTE: “History does not entrust the care of freedom to the phone, and 18% were texting.“Every hour of every day, a teen is hit the weak or timid.” Dwight D. Honoring Your Memory Carmen Guillot

Carmen Guillot was a single mom, hard worker, and loving individual who was best known for her big heart, outgoing personality, sense of humor, her cooking and honesty. Most of all she is remembered for her love for her daughter, family, and friends. She was a loyal to her friends as anyone could be and heaven help anyone who spoke bad or crossed one of them. That person stood a better chance of whooping Hulk Hogan than mess with her friends or family. While on another poker run earlier in the day, the group came upon another accident involving a group of bikes not associated with the poker run. Carmen was the first off the bike to assist anyone she could that was injured in that accident and then was asked by a fellow rider to watch his child that was on the back of his bike, to keep her attention on the accident ahead. She immediately went to entertain the child for her friend and fellow rider. She would give you the shirt off her back, give you half of her peanut butter and banana sandwich, and even share her last beer. She always put everyone else before herself, except the love of her life her daughter, she came first above and beyond all others. She was engaged to a deployed soldier who was unable to get leave to come home, she was loyal and devoted to him and cherished every moment they were able to spend together when he did have leave. She had an honor escort for her funeral of about 30 bikes from various local and out of state clubs, it was beautiful and a touching tribute to a truly amazing women. She would have been smiling from ear to ear to hear the thunder of the bikes taking her on her final ride. She will be missed by many, but forgotten by none she touched. So ride free, my sweets, and watch over your fellow brothers and sisters

I’ve written this a dozen times and I can’t seem to put into worlds my thoughts. I keep finding that everything I write has so much pain and darkness and I don’t want that for Carmen . I don’t want people to think of her and have any darkness in their hearts. I want the joy and sunshine to radiate in every one like it radiates in her. She was a beautiful mother inside and out. From the first time I met her I knew she was special and I wasn’t going to let her go. She loved me with all her heart and I felt it. I can only hope she knows how much I love her. I want her to know, that I know she is my biggest supporter and I will always try to make her proud as I was proud of her. I want her to know that she will always be a part of us, and that she will never die... everything she instilled in us all the love and memories of her and will forever live on. I will never get tired of telling her story. Mrs. Becky and Mr. Buddy I know everything seems lost and no amount of words will help that but I hope your daughter will. I want you to know that your daughter was a perfect example of love. I could see the values and love you instilled in her every day. The respect, strength and dedication she had in everything she did and how she handled life’s problems was a perfect example of how to raise a child. Just know you’re not alone through this ... you have this huge family that I’m just now starting to see. John, Cassie, Brian, Jenn, Sam, Me. The list could go on for miles. This is how I know Zoie is in perfect hands! Zoie my heart has broken an infinite amount of times for you. I cry with every thought of how you are going to handle this. The only thing that helps the pain is that Carmen was your mom and just as she is strong, so are you. Just as Mrs. Becky and Mr. Buddy prepared Carmen for life, so did Carmen for you. You are your mother, and you will grow up a strong beautiful woman with all the love and gracefulness your mother has. Because she passed that on to you. Don’t ever feel alone don’t ever feel you have no one to talk, to you have us. Family and friends will get you through this and everything you encounter. But most of all your mommy will. She is inside of you. All around you. That little voice in your head is her. Listen to her. Talk to her she will listen. Make your mommy proud as she was proud of you! She told me so many times how much she loved you and how proud she was of you every day she would tell me stories of you and all the wonders and silliness you were doing. So keep making those stories. Keep being silly. Be strong because others around you will need your strength and your love! Don’t be afraid to talk about your mommy. Don’t be afraid of the tears it will help you. It will help everyone heal because your mommy’s story is of love and joy. And through those tears you will feel the sunshine coming out. I really wish I could be here today in person to say this to everyone so they could see how much Carmen means to me and how much I believe in her. Everyone don’t stop spreading Carmen’s story tell everyone that will listen. Hell even if they won’,t tell them anyways! Carmen I know you can hear me I just wanted to say that while you’re on your journey know that I will love you to the moon and back. Even when you take a trip around Mars twice.

Meet Cajun Worx by Jennifer Dugan Tucked away in Abbeville Louisiana, you will find a bad ass bike shop,” Cajun Worx” is owned and operated by a fellow biker Chris Hebert . Chris has a passion for getting the job done. Chances are if you call him to work on your bike, he will get to you the same day or shortly thereafter. He told me a story about a girl he ran into riding a sports bike, and she was broke down at a truck stop not long ago. He said she had no one to come to help, and he fixed her bike, and got her back on the road. She asked him how much she owed him, and his reply was “You didn’t pull up at my shop wanting me to work on your bike, so I there is no way I would charge you, for just helping you since you are broke down”. That is the kinda guy he is… It doesn’t matter if it’s your Harley or your side by side… motor work, or adding a lift to your favorite atv, he is ready to help. One of Chris’ many accomplishments is his own 2016 Road Glide. He bought it brand new and then brought it straight to his shop. He named her “Codeine” and the entire number of extra’s (pictured here), was completed by Chris himself. So if you need someone to repair or customize your pride and joy, Cajun Worx will give you the best quality of work at the best price. Stop by 2702 North Drive, Abbeville La. George Phillips , an elderly man from Walled Lake, Michigan, was going up to bed, when his wife told him that he’d left the light on in the garden shed, which she could see from the bedroom window. George opened the back door to go turn off the light, but saw that there were people in the shed stealing things. He phoned the police, who asked “Is someone in your house?” He said “No, but some people are breaking into my garden shed and stealing from me.” Then the police dispatcher said “All patrols are busy, you should lock your doors and an officer will be along when one is available”. George said, “Okay.” He hung up the phone and waited 3 minutes. Then he phoned the police again. “Hello, I just called you a few minutes ago because there were people stealing things from my shed. Well, you don’t have to worry about them now because I just shot and killed them both; the dogs are eating them right now,” and he hung up. Within five minutes, six Police Cars, a SWAT Team, a Helicopter, two Fire Trucks, a Paramedic and an Ambulance showed up at the Phillips’ residence and caught the burglars red-handed. One of the Policemen said to George, “I thought you said that you’d shot them!” George said, “I thought you said there was nobody available!” *True Story. Don’t mess with old people. Red Meat is NOT bad for you. Fuzzy Green Meat IS bad for you. An old farmer drove to a neighbor’s and knocked at the door. A boy, about 9, opened the door. The farmer asked, “Is your Dad home?” The boy replied, “No sir, he isn’t; he went to town.” The farmer said, “Well, is your Mother here?” The boy said, “No sir, she went to town with Dad.” The farmer said, “How about your brother, Howard? Is he here?” The boy said, “No sir, He went with Mom and Dad.” The rancher stood there for a few minutes, shifting from one foot to the other, and mumbling to him-self. The boy said, “Is there anything I can do for you? I know where all the tools are, if you want to borrow one, or I can give Dad a message.” “Well,” said the rancher uncomfortably, “I really wanted to talk to your Dad. It’s about your brother Howard getting my daughter, Suzie, pregnant.” The boy thought for a moment, “You would have to talk to Dad about that. I know he charges $500 for the bull and $150. for the hog, but I don’t know how much he charges for Howard.” Friendship among Women: A woman didn’t come home one night. Bikers At War Americans are a hearty folk. A rich history of “rolling up the sleeves” and “sticking to it” with some “we’re all in this together” makes us who we are. As a people, we’re as varied as our terrain. Our rugged nature helped us conquer our frontier. United, our strong, optimistic constitution and sense of “right” carried us through to our Independence, through our Civil War and shone like the sun as we fought 2 World Wars, persevered through the sacrifices of Vietnam, Korea, a host of European and South American conflicts....and now the Middle East. While today’s media has most of us shaking our heads in disgust at what seems like the demise of our collective indomitable spirit here at home, I find that the biker culture’s old school righteous ways of family, loyalty, honor and respect continue unabated. In our culture, there is recognition of and a deep appreciation for each others’ spirits. We express our love for one another in the way we enjoy each other’s company and in the way we care for each other as if we personally feel each other’s pains; in the way we protect each other with 100% defensive willingness. We don’t look to start anything, but we don’t take anything...in our own defense or the defense of our loved ones, family or otherwise. We are the hearty folk united with a rugged nature and a sense of right. The righteous. The indomitable American Spirit lives on in us. Bikers at war through the years is nothing new. Our country is OUR country and we have brothers and sisters in all branches of the service. Whenever the bugler has sounded the charge, we’ve taken the hill! There is that tribal nature running hand in hand with the nomadic wanderlust that brings out the adventurous avenger in us all. To arms! Military brotherhood is where motorcycling brotherhood began. Famously, Sonny Barger (pictured), a veteran himself, volunteered to take an entire international motorcycle club to Vietnam to take care of business! His generosity was declined, but his righteousness was heard around the world! As you make your way around your 2-wheeled world, you will come across folks wearing vests and folks wearing “cuts”. In either case you might find branch emblems, unit crests or other military artwork being flown there with pride. You may see bikes parked outside your local VFW which ensures rich stories inside of harsh days gone by….or decades. That sense of personal responsibility to the tribe runs deep in our biker culture and our national pride is unaffected by the leadership-du-jour. Fast forward to today’s conflicts and there is one standup brother who stands out in today’s news. I read an April 2015 article in The Daily Beast about a Coloradobased patchholder that goes by “Necromancer” who felt the call to go to the Middle East to fight against ISIS with the Peshmerga. Necromancer had a past that he paid for and in his down time read up on the oppression and the heinous acts perpetrated by ISIS. His sense of “right” and his patriotic constitution drove him to pack up and ship out to train with the French Foreign Legion. He then went on to volunteer with the Kurdish Peshmerga Forces where his ferocity in battle has earned him the moniker “Sak bab” (S.O.B.) and a price on his head from ISIS. He’s quoted as saying, “I’m here for the people, nobody else. I’m here for all of those who want to live a peaceful life that has been deprived to them by ISIS. I don’t care about politics or religion. That’s not what I’m here for.” He knows the threat ISIS poses is worldwide and he’s there to take care of business in the finest tradition of our culture. There are other bikers volunteering over there from around the world. Some form militias and some fall under command individually. The call is strong in our righteous biker culture. 28 THUNDER ROADS MAGAZINE LOUISIANA
