Alex Katz, This is Now On Guggenheim Bilbao 6

The exhibition features 35 landscapes in which Katz utilizes a grammar of abstraction, which includes the expansive allover treatment of his canvases, to capture what he calls the present tense, or the simultaneity of vision and awareness. Katz describes this moment as an explosive flash just before an image comes into focus. The show aims to reveal the fundamental but often unacknowledged role that landscape has played in Katz’s long career. Katz’s monumental landscapes are immersive, contemplative paintings that prompt conversations about the confluence of perception and awareness, the relationship between art and nature, and the nature of the sublime in this contemporary moment. The paintings Sunset and Twilight exemplify Katz’s aim to seize upon a flash of perception. In Sunset, Katz conveys the heat of a late summer afternoon by silhouetting the tops of tall pines against a deep red sky, and in Twilight, Katz captures the silvery, evanescent light of the moon as it pierces a stand of pine trees late in the evening.

PLUS PERFORMANCE 8

The new Audi RS 6 Avant performance offer more power output than ever before. This top figure for power and efficiency is made possible by the technological expertise of Audi and quattro GmbH. Engineering skills and long years of experience with RS high-performance models went into further optimizing the 4.0 TFSI, from the specific engine management system with increased rpm and boost pressure to the Audi cylinder on demand (COD) system, which only activates four of the eight cylinders when under part load.

quattro permanent all-wheel drive delivers the power to the road and flexibly distributes torque as needed via the center differential. In the standard configuration, 40 percent flows to the front axle and 60 percent to the rear axle. The wheel-selective torque control intervenes as necessary. Audi also equips the quattro drivetrain with an optional sport differential on the rear axle with active torque distribution between the inside and outside wheel.

Even more performance coupled with outstanding efficiency – that is what is behind the new “performance” model designation at Audi.

The standard eight-speed tiptronic has been designed for extreme sportiness in the new RS 6 Avant performance. The driver can choose between the modes D and S or change gears manually either by tapping the selector lever or by using the shift paddles on the RS multifunction sport leather steering wheel. In manual mode, a shift indicator in the driver information system or optional head-up display indicates the rev limit.

With its dynamic setup, the standard RS adaptive air suspension lowers the body of the RS 6 Avant performance by 20 millimeters (0.8 in). The integrated damping control varies as a function of the road conditions, driving style and the mode chosen in Audi drive select. Audi offers the tauter RS sport suspension plus with Dynamic Ride Control (DRC) as an alternative. An additional option is dynamic steering with a continuously variable steering ratio.

The Audi RS 6 Avant The driver can adjust the function of key components using Audi drive select, including the steering, engine and sound management, the tiptronic and the optional sport differential. New in the performance models: Similar to the new Audi R8 high-performance sports car, the driver can switch between the modes auto, comfort, dynamic and individual without taking his or her eyes off the road using a special button on the RS multifunction sport leather steering wheel. The new RS performance model come standard with exclusive 21-inch cast aluminium wheels shod with size 285/30 tires on the RS 6 Avant performance. The four internally ventilated brake disks have a weight-saving wave design; as an option, Audi offers carbon fiber- ceramic disks. Electronic Stabilization Control (ESC) has a Sport mode and can be deactivated if needed be. Striking design details reinforce the preeminent position of the new RS performance model. These include the sportily designed bumpers with large air inlets up front and the heavily profiled diffuser insert at the rear, the gloss black honeycomb grille typical of the RS models and the flared side sills. Audi offers the new exclusive paint finish Ascari blue, metallic as an option.

The sportily elegant interior of the RS 6 Avant performance comes standard with RS sport seats with pronounced side bolsters and integrated head restraints. Audi offers the seats in the color combination black and blue with the optional RS performance design package. This includes new seat upholstery in an Alcantara/leather combination with a honeycomb pattern and matching contrasting stitching on the armrests, controls elements and floor mats. Rounding out this interior combination are kneepads in Alcantara and carbon twill blue inlays. This sophisticated and exclusive carbon material is interwoven with a blue thread. The dial instruments feature black faces, white dials and red needles. The new Audi RS 6 Avant performance costs 117,000 euros in Germany; The new model will be available at dealers beginning in November. The 4.0 TFSI now produces 445 kW (605 hp) and maximum torque of 700 Nm (516.3 lb-ft). A particular highlight of the engine is an overboost function allowing the driver to temporarily draw on up to 750 Nm (553.2 lb-ft). The Audi RS 6 Avant performance sprint like supercars from 0 to 100 km/h (62.1 mph) in just 3.7 seconds, an improvement of 0.2 seconds over the respective base RS model. They need just 12.1 seconds to accelerate from 0 to 200 km/h (124.3 mph), 1.4 seconds less than the base RS models. With the optional dynamic package, top speed can be increased from 250 to 280 (155 to mph), respectively. Despite the output boost of 33 kW (45 hp), the sonorous V8 biturbo power unit consumes just 9.6 of fuel per 100 kilometers (24.5 US mpg), respectively, corresponding to 223 g CO2 (358.9 g/mi).

MASERATI AT THE AUTO E MOT

From 1934 to 2015: four Maseratis on display with two complete one-offs

TO D’EPOCA
SHOW IN PADUA The Auto e Moto d’Epoca show, Europe’s and Italy’s biggest exhibition of classic and contemporary cars and motorbikes, began in Padua today and will be open to the public until Sunday 25 October. Three classic Maserati cars of significant historical value are on display at the stand dedicated to the Trident in Hall 1 at the Padua show: a 1934 6C34, only 6 of which were made; a sporty 1964 Mistral Coupé with bodywork by Frua, and a one-off Tipo 124 from 1974. As well as the three exclusive classic Maseratis, the stand is also exhibiting a Ghibli S Q4, the contemporary executive sedan with a sporty personality, equipped with the “Q4” all-wheel drive system. This one-off Ghibli was used as the concept car for the new range of “Zegna Edition” interiors currently on the market and is the only one of its type in the world. The Maserati Store will also be at the stand with lots of new products including the Maserati Classiche line inspired by the world of heritage, with the Trident’s legendary vintage cars reproduced on the graphics and patches of the garments. The “Maserati Classiche” department, which curates the brand’s participation at the show, is an in-house entity entirely dedicated to classic Maserati cars and the promotion of the company’s immense historical heritage. Maserati recently introduced the MY16, presented in September at the Frankfurt Motor Show; this upgrades all current engines in the range to the Euro 6 standard, also adding exclusive new content for the Ghibli and Quattroporte sedans, including interiors in Ermenegildo Zegna silk.

SILVERSTONE CLASSIC INSIDE

12

After the huge success of this year’s record-breaking Silver Jubilee extravaganza, the 2016 Silverstone Classic will continue to set the gold standard in global historic racing festivals. Staged at the home of British motor sport, next year’s Silverstone Classic will run from 29-31 July, with tickets going on sale on Thursday 12 November. The glittering 25th anniversary blockbuster confirmed the Classic’s coveted status as the World’s Biggest Classic Motor Racing Festival with record grids, record track parades, record numbers of car club displays plus, for the first time, a record attendance of more than 100,000 visitors. Building on that spectacular success, even more ambitious plans are already well advanced to ensure that next summer’s three-day Classic is even bigger and even better. The packed race programme will again comprise all of Europe’s premier retro racing series including everpopular grids for the FIA Masters Historic Formula 1 Championship, Super Touring and Pre ’66 GTs. Added to these established fan-favourites will be a very special Can-Am showdown to mark 50 years since the birth of the legendary North American-based sportscar championship back in 1966.

More exciting grids are yet to be announced, along with the key motoring milestones that will be honoured in 2016 by the unprecedented number of car clubs attending with special displays and evocative track parades. The live music line-up will also be confirmed in the coming weeks. “With Status Quo topping the bill and so much happening both on and off the famous Grand Prix circuit, our stunning Silver Jubilee will be a hard act to follow,” admitted Nick Wigley, Event Director. “Every year, however, the Silverstone Classic just gets bigger and better, and next July we will raise the bar again. This really should be the first date you put in your new 2016 diaries!” Ticket details – including Early Bird savings for those booking immediately – will be available soon. In the meantime, a full report of the 2015 record-breaker can be found on the official website: www.

A ‘TOUCH OF TIGOSE’ HISTORIC RACING FOR CRANFIELD UNIVERSITY DIRECTOR

In line with TIGOSE’s aim to celebrate all activities relating to classic motorised vehicles, and encourage young people to nurture an interest in historic motorsport, Clive was competing in his 1929 Riley Brooklands at Silverstone, with his students assisting on the day; they also took the opportunity to look closely at the wide range of cars racing at the AMOC meeting. “Many of the Cranfield Masters students see their career paths leading to F1, WEC, WRC and other series, but I am keen that they shouldn’t forget the roots of a sport to which we have dedicated our lives,” said Temple. TIGOSE launched the first Classic Vehicle Restoration Apprenticeship in the UK last year; together with training partner Emtec Colleges, The Guild provides a tailored and structured frame of learning to young people who wish to work in the classic car restoration industry. Only the helicopter is quicker – at 22 minutes direct to The London Heliport in Battersea.

This new rail link comes as London Oxford Airport reports a continued increase in business aviation traffic during 2015, bolstered by regular activity from established operators such as Air Hamburg, NetJets and Bombardier Challenger specialist VistaJet. London Oxford Airport’s Oxfordjet business aviation facility can handle aircraft from the smallest of compact private jets to Gulfstream, Global Express and larger passenger airliners of 100plus seats including the Embraer E190.

Bentley wins GT Asia Teams’ title 28

Bentley Team Absolute has taken the GT Asia Series teams’ title with its trio of Bentley Continental GT3s, after a strong season that ended with a pole position, race win and podium in the series finale in Thailand. The weekend started well for Bentley Team Absolute, as former Bentley works driver Duncan Tappy (GB) and new team-mate for the event Benny Simonsen (DN) put their car on pole position for race one. Despite it being a debut in the Continental GT3 for the Dane, the pair dominated the race and crossed the line in first place. In race two, Tappy and Simonsen finished just behind team-mates Adderly Fong (HK) and Keita Sawa (JP) who were pushing to take the driver’s title, but narrowly missed out, despite getting a podium result. The championship title is the second win for the Continental GT3, which won the Blancpain Sprint Series title just a fortnight ago. The team next races its Bentley Continental GT3 in the GT World Cup on 22 November as Fong takes on the 60-minute race on the streets of Macau.

London Classic Car Show New hall added to 2016 London Classic Car Show to showcase displays from 25 of the country’s top car clubs. When the inaugural London Classic Car Show opened its doors in January, it covered 18,000 square metres of prime exhibition space at ExCeL London. Crammed with innovative features, mouth-watering classic cars and a star-studded list of celebrity visitors, that inaugural show was such a success that even before the show closed it was announced that the 2016 edition (18-21 February, 2016) would be almost half as big again. Reminiscent of a British Motor Show from the 1960s, the hall will also feature stands from relevant classic car dealers. Visitors will be treated to period entertainment to continue the hall’s retro vibe. The second London Classic Car Show will also have a number of other new features, including ‘Classic Corner’, an open forum running virtually continuously throughout the show where guest speakers will talk about classic cars as investments, about the pleasure a classic car can bring and offer advice about buying at auction. More dealers and more trade stands are also promised. Prices: Adult entry £23 Children entry £17 Family tickets at £65 More information on the website

Crossing California on Hydrogen Nearly 1,000 fuel cell electric miles

30

Thanks to Mercedes-Benz, the station owners Linde, First Element Fuels and Hydrogen Frontier for their work in building up the network.

conditions, the Mercedes-Benz B-Class F-CELL has already been in day-to-day use with customers in the European and American markets since 2010.

The opening of a new hydrogen station in Coalinga along the I-5 corridor made this opportunity possible. A team driving five B-Class F-CELL refilled at four permanent hydrogen-fueling stations located in Burbank, Coalinga, West Sacramento and Emeryville, accumulating nearly 1,000 miles over the course of their three-day trip.

The electric power driving the Mercedes-Benz B-Class F-CELL is generated directly on board in the fuel cell stack by a reaction between the oxygen in the air and hydrogen. There is no emission of pollutants, only pure water vapour. Thanks to the 700-bar highpressure fuel tank system, the car has a long operating range of around 250 miles (400 kilometers) and can be refuelled in the short time of less than three minutes.

The total mileage of the Daimler fuel cell fleet, which now numbers more than 300 vehicles including numerous research vehicles, has now reached more than 7.4 million miles (twelve million kilometers). Numbering around 70 vehicles, the F-CELL fleet in the USA has now covered about 2 million miles (3.2 million kilometers).

It was a real pleasure getting to roadtrip with real drivers and learn how well Fuel Cell Vehicles can fit into their lives, especially as the network expands.

The car combines local emissionfree mobility with long-distance and day-to-day suitability and good performance figures. Produced under series production

Mercedes-Benz B-Class F-CELL customers ventured beyond Southern California last week for the very first time, while only filling up at existing public hydrogen stations along the route from Los Angeles to San Francisco.

The development of the new generation Mercedes-Benz fuel cell electric vehicle is on track and the company plans to launch the model by 2017.
