We have explored Ticino for over thirty years and we appreciate it so much as to tell its tale in the products of our publishing house. We also enjoy travelling, which allows us to compare the knowledge of our microcosm to other countries. It is exactly during the arrangements for one of these trips that the idea to create this little tourist guide with the best of Ticino came to life. When travelling, although there is rarely enough time for everything, setting foot in a new place awakens the desire to explore the best of the best. Based on our experience of Ticino's hidden corners, we have selected the places of interest and split them into 10 categories (Top Ten). For each of them we have illustrated 7 ‘wonders’ (10 on web) that we recommend. Of course our selection is subjective. In this paper guide, designed for rapid consultation, each suggestion is presented in a nutshell. Yet, each subject is further developed online with in-depth articles, useful information, photographs, 360° images, maps and videos. Though the published information has been carefully verified – we visited the places and took the suggested itineraries – it is possible that changes have occurred in the meantime. Before taking off, especially for the more demanding excursions, it would be prudent to inquire about the state of the itinerary just as it is equally important to have the adequate equipment and to verify the schedules and other details. Da molti anni percorriamo il territorio del Ticino, che amiamo molto, per raccontarlo sulle pubblicazioni della nostra casa editrice. Ma amiamo anche viaggiare, affiancando così la conoscenza del nostro microcosmo a quella di altri paesi. Ed è proprio preparando uno di questi viaggi che è nata l’idea di creare questa piccola guida turistica con il meglio del Ticino. Quando si arriva in un luogo nuovo, spesso si ha poco tempo a disposizione e si vorrebbe sapere quali sono le cose più belle da vedere. Ebbene, noi abbiamo selezionato per voi, in base alla nostra esperienza del territorio, le bellezze del Ticino, suddividendole in 10 categorie (Top Ten). Per ognuna abbiamo illustrato le 7 ‘meraviglie’ (10 nella versione online) che vi consigliamo. Naturalmente le nostre scelte sono personali. In questa guida su carta, di veloce consultazione, trovate un’estrema sintesi di ogni proposta, ma nella versione web ogni tematica viene ampiamente sviluppata con testi di approfondimento, informazioni utili, fotografie, immagini a 360 gradi, cartine e filmati. Nonostante le informazioni pubblicate siano state controllate accuratamente – abbiamo visitato i luoghi e percorso gli itinerari proposti – è possibile che nel frattempo si siano verificati dei cambiamenti. Prima di partire, soprattutto per escursioni impegnative, sarà quindi prudente informarsi sullo stato del percorso, così come è necessario per ogni attività disporre dell’equipaggiamento adatto e verificare orari e altri dettagli. Lugano’s Historic Centre / Centro storico di Lugano The Piazza della Riforma claims Locarno's Piazza Grande role of Ticino's most beautiful square. It's considered the city's elegant "living room" surrounded by old buildings, including the Neoclassic Palazzo Civico (Town Hall), and inviting places to take a break. Meeting point for Lugano residents, it hosts big events like the Estival Jazz and is the ideal starting point to visit the city. A network of pedestrian alleys take you through shining shop windows and luxuriant boutiques, connecting to city centre's main places of interest (the Cathedral, the church of S. Maria degli Angioli, the LAC cultural centre, the lakefront and the Ciani Park).

Church of S. Maria degli Angioli / Chiesa S.M. degli Angioli Located on the lakeside promenade of Lugano, the church of Santa Maria degli Angioli hosts an early Renaissance masterpiece, reputed as being the most famous fresco of that period in Switzerland. The work is a portrayal of the ‘Passion and Crucifixion’ by Italian artist Bernardino Luini (1480 - 1532), a disciple of Leonardo. The large, lively fresco covers most of the wall with many faces and figures: more than 150 in all, including soldiers on horseback and a throng of people. It is advisable to combine the visit with the tour of the historic centre.
La chiesa di Santa Maria degli Angioli a Lugano, sulla passeggiata in riva al lago, custodisce un capolavoro del primo Rinascimento, considerato il più noto affresco di quel periodo in Svizzera. Si tratta di una raffigurazione della Passione e della Crocifissione, opera dell’artista italiano Bernardino Luini (1480 circa – 1532), che fu discepolo di Leonardo. Il grande affresco si caratterizza per la vivacità della scena che presenta un tripudio di personaggi: oltre 150, con un alternarsi di cavalli e un movimento di figure. È consigliabile combinare la visita con quella del centro storico.

Riva San Vitale Baptistery / Battistero di Riva San Vitale The Riva San Vitale Baptistery is an important religious and historic site: it's the most ancient stonework Christian monument in Switzerland. Dating back to the 5th century, it has an octagonal base and rises above what were probably foundations of a building from the Roman era. Inside, there's a rare immersion baptismal font in the shape of an octagon. Precious 12th century Romanesque frescoes are visible in the recesses and on the columns. Riva San Vitale is only 5 km from Mendrisio, whose interesting historic centre deserves a visit.
Il Battistero di Riva San Vitale è una testimonianza storica e religiosa molto importante: si tratta del più antico monumento cristiano in muratura esistente in Svizzera. Risalente al V secolo, presenta una pianta ottagonale e sorge probabilmente sulle fondazioni di una costruzione di epoca romana. All’interno conserva un raro fonte battesimale ottagonale a immersione. Pregevoli affreschi romanici del XII secolo sono visibili nelle nicchie e sulle colonne. Riva San Vitale si trova a soli 5 km da Mendrisio, il cui interessante centro storico merita una visita.

Mendrisio’s Historic Centre / Centro storico di Mendrisio Ancient buildings, churches enriched by stuccos and frescos appear in the small alleys of the old town in Mendrisio. The old centre remains untouched by modernity and becomes especially suggestive during the Holy Week’s processions and in September, when the wine festival takes place. Mendrisio is the capital of the region known as “Switzerland’s Tuscany”, indicated as such because of its landscapes, characterized by little hills covered with vineyards, and because of its brick-houses with shingled roofs. At 5 km distance lays the Baptistery of Riva San Vitale, the oldest Christian monument in Switzerland.

Mendrisio è capoluogo di una regione conosciuta coma “la Toscana della Svizzera” per la presenza di paesaggi caratterizzati da dolci colline vignate e dalle case in mattoni con i tetti in coppi. A 5 km si trova il Battistero di Riva San Vitale, il più antico monumento cristiano della Svizzera.

Castles of Bellinzona / Castelli di Bellinzona The castles of Bellinzona are one of Ticino's main attractions and, with the old walls that are still standing, are the sole medieval military complex in the Alpine region. They became part of the UNESCO World Heritage in 2000. A visit to the castles, also connected by a tourist train, is like diving into history: an excursion enjoyed by all ages thanks to the splendor of the fortifications with their high towers and crenulated walls. Of interest is also the walk inside Bellinzona's historic centre, especially on Saturdays, when you can see the local market. Audio guides are also available.
I castelli di Bellinzona sono una delle principali attrazioni del Ticino e costituiscono, con quanto rimane delle antiche mura, un complesso di architettura militare medievale unico nell’arco alpino, inserito nel 2000 nel Patrimonio dell'umanità UNESCO. Una visita ai tre castelli, collegati anche da un trenino turistico, rappresenta un tuffo nella storia, grazie alla suggestione creata dalle fortificazioni con le loro alte torri e mura merlate. Tutto il bello della montagna A mountain to discover
Avreste mai pensato che proprio sopra Locarno si può visitare un punto d osservazione comodamente raggiungibile, dal quale si vede contemporaneamente il punto più basso (Lago Maggiore) ed il punto più alto (cima Dufour nel massiccio del Monte Rosa) della Svizzera? Con la moderna funivia da Orselina si sale in pochi minuti a Cardada (1340 msm) e di seguito con la seggiovia fino a Cimetta (1670 msm). Percorso plantare, corsa d orientamento, Nordic Walking, pista mountain bike circolare, partenza parapendio, l Arca di Noè, la caccia al tesoro, due zone giochi, percorso ludico e cinque ristoranti / capanne. Madonna del Sasso The Madonna del Sasso (Our Lady of the Rock) in Orselina above Locarno is the most important sanctuary in the Italianspeaking part of Switzerland. For centuries, pilgrims would walk to the Sacred Mountain where, according to the tradition, the Virgin Mary appeared (1480). Two routes are possible: the steep Via Crucis or the trails in a natural valley where a few chapels are located. If you prefer comfort, your may take the funicular railway from Locarno. Numerous works of art preserved in the sanctuary (stuccoes, frescoes, ex votos, Bramantino and Ciseri canvases) were revitalized by a restoration completed in 2013.
Il santuario della Madonna del Sasso a Orselina sopra Locarno è il più importante della Svizzera italiana. Da secoli i pellegrini si incamminano verso il Sacro Monte, dove, secondo la tradizione, nel 1480 apparve la Vergine Maria. Due i percorsi possibili: la ripida Via Crucis oppure il sentiero nella selvaggia valle su cui si affacciano alcune cappelle. Chi preferisce la comodità può salire con la funicolare da Locarno. Numerose le opere d’arte custodite nel Santuario (stucchi, affreschi, ex voto, tele del Bramantino e di Antonio Ciseri) e rivalorizzate dal restauro terminato nel 2013.

Church of Mogno / Chiesa di Mogno At 7:15 am on April 25th 1986 an avalanche struck the village of Mogno in the Maggia Valley destroying the 17th century church of S. Giovanni Battista (S. John the Baptist). A commission for the church's reconstruction was formed and the project given to the architect Mario Botta. A lot of controversy surrounded the project and its realization. Nevertheless, Botta built one of his most important works in Mogno. The church that we see today is the answer that underlines "the positivity of construction as an expression of the toils of humankind" when faced with nature's devastating force, affirms Botta.
Alle ore 7.15 del 25 aprile 1986 una valanga si abbatte su Mogno (Vallemaggia) e distrugge la seicentesca chiesetta di San Giovanni Battista. Viene costituito un comitato per la sua ricostruzione e l’incarico è conferito all’architetto Mario Botta. Numerose polemiche accompagnano il progetto e la realizzazione della nuova chiesa. Ciò nonostante, a Mogno Botta ha edificato una delle sue opere più importanti. La chiesa che ammiriamo oggi è una risposta che sottolinea “la positività del costruire come espressione della fatica dell’uomo” di fronte alla forza devastatrice della natura, afferma Botta.

Morcote Thanks to its location between lake and mountains, to a centre characterized by porticos, to its churches and chapels and to a park with the likes of a little paradise, Morcote has won the title of "nicest village of Switzerland 2016". Located on the banks of Lake Lugano this inviting destination, also called "pearl of the Ceresio", was once a fishermen's village with houses facing the lake and porticos once used to shelter boats. It was also home to skilled artisans and artists who found their fortune far from their country but that also knew how to leave a trace of their genius in their homeland.
Grazie alla sua posizione tra monti e lago, al nucleo caratterizzato dai portici, alle sue chiese e cappelle e a un parco che è un piccolo paradiso, Morcote è stato designato “il più bel villaggio della Svizzera 2016”. Situata sulle rive del lago di Lugano e soprannominata “la perla del Ceresio” questa meta di passeggiate era un villaggio di pescatori, con le case affacciate sul lago e i portici che servivano da riparo alle imbarcazioni. È stata anche patria di abili artigiani e artisti che trovarono fortuna lontano dal paese, ma che seppero lasciare un’impronta del loro genio anche nei luoghi d'origine.

Gandria Gandria's centre is charming and well preserved, where the building facades are reflected in the waters of Lake Ceresio. It is one of Ticino's most beautiful lakeside towns. The buildings, tightly aligned, can be reached via stairways and alleyways. Some of the houses date back to the 16th and 17th centuries and are embellished with frescoes and stucco decorations. The village is comfortably accessible by boat from Lugano and is connected to two very enjoyable walks: the “Sentiero di Gandria” (Gandria trail) and the route that develops from the village's opposite bank, much appreciated in the summer for its grottos (taverns).
Il nucleo di Gandria, assai pittoresco e ben conservato, con le facciate delle case che si specchiano nelle acque del Ceresio, è tra i borghi lacustri più belli del Ticino. Le costruzioni, strette tra loro, si raggiungono attraverso scalinate e viuzze. Alcune abitazioni risalgono al XVI e al XVII secolo e sono abbellite da affreschi e decorazioni in stucco. Il villaggio è comodamente raggiungibile in battello da Lugano ed è collegato a due passeggiate molto gradevoli: il “Sentiero di Gandria” e il percorso che si sviluppa sulla sponda opposta al villaggio, amata in estate per i suoi grotti.

Carona Carona is a charming village located at the foot of the Monte San Salvatore, on a hill above Lugano. It prides itself in an exceptional historic and artistic heritage: the richness of the outstanding religious buildings are almost equal in quality to the many dwellings from the past. Meride The pleasant hills and picturesque roof-tiled villages of the Mendrisiotto region vaguely recall Tuscany. In this striking landscape, the most delightful, intact and best preserved village is certainly Meride, with compact and stern medieval structures and little alleys that branch out from the narrow main street. Bosco Gurin Bosco Gurin (Maggia Valley) is Ticino's highest altitude village (1500m) and the only one where a German dialect is spoken. In fact, a small Walser community lives here whose ancestors came from the German-speaking part of the Valais Canton in the 13th century to colonize these mountainous lands. Beyond the language, even the architecture of the wooden houses and the torbe recall the Walser origins, while evidence of this civilization so welladapted to the high-altitude lifestyle can be found in the little museum. Walking through the village you will notice numerous graffiti-decorated buildings.

Corippo "Corippo is the gentlest village in the Verzasca Valley. A triangular conglomeration of grey houses with black roofs cascading onto the church that bears the impact by standing diagonally." This is how the Ticino writer Piero Bianconi described this rare example of an authentic rural settlement south of the Alps. Perfectly preserved, Corippo is protected at national level. Its uniqueness lies in the harmony created by the simple architecture of the slate-roof stone houses, all oriented in the same direction and connected by narrow paths.

Tamaro - Lema The crossing that from Monte Tamaro leads to Monte Lema (or reverse) is one of the most spectacular walks in Ticino. It has become a "must do", attracting even the least daring of hikers. It is a small trekking, accessible to all, spectacular for the beautiful scenery; scenic for the incredible view of valleys, urban centers, lakes and the most majestic peaks of the Alps; exciting because it gives the sensation of being suspended between Earth and sky. During tourist season a shuttle bus service brings hikers back from the arrival point to the starting point.

Sentierone of the Verzasca Valley / Sentierone Verzasca For the beauty of the landscape and for the trail that unravel through the woods and along the river’s emeraldcoloured waters, the “Sentierone” of the Verzasca Valley is certainly one of the most popular walks in Ticino. The itinerary follows the ancient mule track through old rural buildings, chapels, little bridges and pastures in bloom. Robiei Glaciological Trail / Sentiero glaciologico The Basodino, located at an altitude between 2,500 and 3,120 meters, is the vastest, most studied and most accessible glacier in Ticino. It represents a precious heritage of a glacier's natural evolution South of the Alps. The glaciological trail (an itinerary that requires good training) offers an insight to discover this spectacular high altitude region, an exclusive environment with very rich flora and fauna. The “Alpe Robiei” (Robiei Pasture) tells a remote and recent tale of the “Val Bavona”: a beautiful valley that can be crossed all the way to San Carlo, departure station of the cableway that goes up to Robiei.

Ritom-Piora The Alpine landscape of the Piora Valley, rich in green pastures in bloom with scattered little lakes, is one of the most idyllic in Ticino. The flora and fauna of these vast and silent spaces are of great interest. It is still possible to encounter eagles, chamois, roe deer, groundhogs, red frogs and admire the beautiful blossoming of gentians, buttercups, arnica and wild orchids. You can get there with Europe's steepest funicular that leaves from Piotta. Extremely numerous are the signposted trails that cross the region and are of various difficulty and length (see 2 of them on our website).

Greina For those that love Alpine settings and vast spaces that mountains can offer, the region of Greina is a destination not to miss. The highland is located at an altitude of 2,300 meters on the border between Ticino (high Blenio Valley) and Graubünden and extends for another six kilometers in length and one kilometer in width. The landscape of the Alpine tundra can have a strong impact and is protected at national level because of the richness and the variety of its biotopes. The Greina is a wonderful excursion also for those who do not particularly enjoy altitude. It is important however, to be well trained.

Monte Brè They say that the Monte Brè area above Lugano is Switzerland's sunniest. It offers a wonderful scenic view of the Alps and the Monte Rosa, disappearing into the Lugano Bay, dominated by Monte San Salvatore. The summit of Monte Brè (933 meters) is accessible by the funicular railway leaving from Lugano-Cassarate and is the ideal place for an excursion amongst art and nature. The charming village of Brè, 15-20 minutes walk from the funicular's arrival station, has in fact been the residence of numerous artists who left an interesting heritage.

Monte Tamaro Straddled over the Lugano and Locarno regions, Monte Tamaro offers a spectacular 360° view over a large chunk of Ticino's territory, encompassing the lakes (of Lugano and Locarno) with the valleys that surround it, the region of Bellinzona, the Malcantone and their mountains. Monte Lema From Monte Lema's naturally green terrace (1624 m) you overlook the valleys of northern Ticino and the lakes of Lugano and Locarno. The imposing scenario extends to the Graubünden and Bernese Alps, to the peaks in the Valais all the way to the Padan Plain and Milan. Accessible from Miglieglia (10 minute cable car-ride) it is also the departure/arrival point for the spectacular high altitude TamaroLema crossing. Located at the summit are an astronomical observatory and a meteorological radar. For those that wish to combine the ascent to the Lema with a walk, we suggest the itinerary called “Tra Cielo e Terra” (Between Earth and Sky).

L’imponente scenario spazia anche sulle Alpi grigionesi e bernesi, sulle cime vallesane e si estende sulla Pianura Padana fino a Milano. Monte San Giorgio From the peak of the San Giorgio, at 1000 m elevation in southern Ticino, you can enjoy a view overlooking the lake and the mountains that offer unforgettable glimpses of the region. However, the San Giorgio especially prides itself in its accession to the UNESCO World Heritage Sites thanks to its fossils. These are exhibited at the Museum in Meride, designed by Ticino architect Mario Botta. In a couple of hours' walk you can reach the summit from Meride while, on the way down, you can choose the western route on one of the most interesting segments of the Geo-paleontological path.

Monte Generoso Monte Generoso is probably the most panoramic mountain in the Canton of Ticino. For over 125 years, visitors have been accessing its summit via a cogwheel railway. After reaching an altitude of 1,704 metres, you can enjoy a breathtaking view over Lake Lugano and the Alps: from the Gran Paradiso to Monte Rosa, from Cervino to the Jungfrau, from the Gotthard mountain range to that of Bernina. Perched on top is the spectacular “Fiore di pietra” (stone flower) complex, designed by Swiss architect Mario Botta. Inaugurated in Spring 2017, it houses two restaurants and a panoramic terrace.

Cardada-Cimetta The mountain region of CardadaCimetta offers a truly unique view overlooking the entire area of Locarno as well as Switzerland's two extremes: the lowest point, Lake Maggiore, and the highest one, the Dufour peak located on the Monte Rosa mountain range. The summit is easily accessible from Locarno's city centre by taking the funicular railway to Orselina, then the cable car to Cardada (1340 m) and finally the chair lift to Cimetta (1670 m). The cable car cabins and the departure and arrival stations were designed by Ticino architect Mario Botta.
La regione montana di Cardada-Cimetta offre un panorama davvero unico che abbraccia tutto il Locarnese e due estremi della Svizzera: il punto più basso, ossia lo specchio d'acqua del Lago Maggiore, e quello più alto, la Punta Dufour situata nel massiccio del Monte Rosa. La vetta è facilmente raggiungibile dal centro di Locarno salendo fino a Orselina in funicolare, proseguendo in funivia fino a Cardada (1340 m) e prendendo poi la seggiovia fino a Cimetta (1670 m). Parco Ciani The Ciani Park is Lugano’s green pearl. Located near the city centre and fronting on Lake Ceresio, it covers a surface of 63,000 square meters. The park is decorated with paths shaded by century-old trees that wind around flower beds, velvety green lawns and small squares attracting visitors to take a rest. Sculptures and fountains decorate the paths. Parco San Grato Located in Carona, nestled on a hillside with a broad and splendid panorama, the San Grato Park owes its fame to the spectacular collection of azaleas, rhododendrons, conifers: the richest in the Canton. Parco Scherrer A unique atmosphere lingers at Scherrer Park in Morcote, on Lake Lugano. Inside the lush subtropical vegetation, reminding of exotic countries, are in fact architectural and artistic works inspired by distant cultures such as a Siamese tea house, an Egyptian temple and Greek sculptures. This fascinating garden is the work of Hermann Arthur Scherrer who since the 1930s dreamt of recreating a magical place inspired by his travels. Between palm trees and bamboo, eucalyptuses and lemon trees, cedars and oleanders, the visitor can admire many floral and scented species of plants.

Park of the Breggia Gorge / Parco Gole della Breggia An excursion in the Park of the Breggia Gorge is an authentic journey through time. Brissago Islands / Isole di Brissago The Brissago Islands are one of Ticino’s most magical places – a small subtropical paradise on Lake Maggiore that is easily accessible by boat. Bolle di Magadino Marshland, reeds, sand holms and floodplain forests (willows, poplars and white alders) are what forms the Bolle di Magadino landscape, a protected area around the mouths of the rivers Ticino and Verzasca, situated along the shore of the Lake Maggiore The environment is a result of a constant exchange between land and water: the river deposits alluvial material during floods and the lake water regularly covers the riverbanks. An ideal habitat for birds, insects, flowers and shrubs of humid climates, this protected area is an interesting landscape for pleasant walks year-round.
Acque stagnanti, canneti, isolotti di sabbia e boschi golenali (pioppi, salici, ontani bianchi) costituiscono il paesaggio delle Bolle di Magadino, alle foci dei fiumi Ticino e Verzasca. L’ambiente è nato dal continuo scambio tra terra e acqua: il fiume deposita materiale alluvionale a ogni sua piena e l’acqua del lago invade periodicamente i terreni delle rive. È l’habitat privilegiato di uccelli, insetti, fiori e arbusti caratteristici delle zone umide. Questa zona protetta costituisce pertanto un’interessante realtà naturalistica dove è piacevole passeggiare in tutti i periodi dell’anno.

Lago Maggiore Express The Lago Maggiore Express is an unforgettable trip by train and boat, through mountains, valleys and lake. Verzasca River / Fiume Verzasca The Verzasca River's source is on the peaks above Sonogno from where it follows the namesake valley down to the Corippo fork and flows into the artificial lake. The clear emerald-colored waters and the pristine nature that surrounds it make it an appreciated destination in the summer when the spots with the calmer waters transform into inviting outdoor pools and the shores, especially in the area around Lavertezzo, fill-up with swimmers. Foroglio Waterfall / Cascata di Foroglio Ticino is rich in waterfalls. The most spectacular one is the Foroglio in the Bavona Valley, at the top of the Maggia Valley. Lakes of St. Gotthard / Laghetti del San Gottardo The excursion leading to the lakes of St. Gotthard is truly fascinating due to the presence of magnificent pools of water in which the sky and mountains are reflected with spectacular scenic effects. The significant height is the reason why summer and early fall are the best periods for a hike. The walk is not difficult but it does require a little training and the right equipment. Along the route, which starts from the top of the St. Gotthard Pass, you will come upon the shimmering blue or emerald waters of the lakes, stirred by breezes that ruffle its surface, a truly stunning mesmerising sight!
Quella che porta ai laghetti del San Gottardo è un’escursione affascinante per la presenza di numerosi e magnifici specchi d’acqua, in cui il cielo e le montagne si riflettono con effetti scenografici. Da effettuarsi preferibilmente in estate o inizio autunno a causa dell’alta quota, la camminata non è difficile ma esige comunque un po’ di allenamento e l’equipaggiamento adatto. Lungo il percorso, che parte dall’Ospizio del San Gottardo (2091 metri), l’incontro con i laghetti dalle acque cangianti, blu o smeraldo, animate da brezze leggere che increspano la superficie, è stupefacente.

Hermann Hesse Museum / Museo Hermann Hesse The little museum dedicated to the German writer Hermann Hesse in Montagnola, above Lugano, is one of the most visited in Ticino. A permanent exhibit set up in the halls of the Torre Camuzzi, adjacent to the Nobel Prize winner's first home, introduces to the forty years that Hesse spent in the South of the Alps from 1919. Collected are objects and works of this author, one of the most widely read in the world: famous are his glasses, the typewriter and the delicate watercolors. An excellent audioguide in Italian and German accompanies the visitor through the pleasant landscapes of the Collina d'oro (Golden Hill), dear to the writer.
Il piccolo museo dedicato allo scrittore tedesco Hermann Hesse a Montagnola, sopra Lugano, è uno dei più visitati del Ticino. Museum of Fossils Monte S. Giorgio / Museo dei fossili Discover the charm of a lost world of over 200 million years ago. The Museum of Fossils of Monte San Giorgio presents the important paleontological heritage of the region, considered one of the most important fossil deposits in the world and registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The fossils of San Giorgio are known for their variety and for their exceptional state of preservation. Vincenzo Vela Museum / Museo Vincenzo Vela The Vincenzo Vela Museum, that exposes the works of the Ticino sculptor, belongs to the group of the most important artists’ houses of the European 1800s. Built by the great Ticino realist sculptor Vincenzo Vela (18201891) at the peak of his career, the villa was transformed into a public museum after being donated to the Swiss Confederation. From 1997 to 2001 the building was entirely restructured by the renowned Ticino architect Mario Botta. A few elements that remind us of the residence’s dwelling places and the panoramic park confer a ‘work of art character” to the site.
Il Museo Vincenzo Vela, che espone le opere dello scultore ticinese, appartiene al novero delle più importanti case d'artista dell'Ottocento europeo. Costruita dal grande scultore realista Vincenzo Vela (1820-1891) all'apice della sua carriera, Villa Vela è stata trasformata in museo pubblico dopo la sua donazione alla Confederazione. Dal 1997 al 2001 l’edificio è stato interamente ristrutturato dal noto architetto ticinese Mario Botta. Alcuni elementi che ricordano la destinazione privata della residenza e il parco panoramico conferiscono a questo luogo il carattere di opera d’arte totale.

Fondazione Ghisla Art Collection Works by Picasso, Mirò, Christo and Jeanne-Claude, Magritte, Tàpies, Botero, Kounellis, Poliakoff, Lucio Fontana, Castellani, Appel, Basquiat, Piero Manzoni and many other protagonists of the contemporary art scene, plus those of a large group of young, emerging artists, are displayed at the Fondazione Ghisla Art Collection in Locarno. Designed by architect Franco Moro, the museum itself is a feat of architecture: a big cube covered by red wire mesh, surrounded by a small moat. Three out of the eight exhibition-rooms are dedicated to temporary exhibits.

Monte Verità This hill in Ascona boasts a storied past that began at the turn of the 20th Century when the Monte Verità (Hill of Truth) became the heart of a movement dedicated to spiritual search and life renewal, which involved intellectuals, academics and artists coming mainly from Northern Europe. For two decades, the hill was infused with this spirit of utopia. Many traces remain as testimonials of that era. A museum itinerary, especially the museum Casa Anatta, and the guided tours allow an immersion into the special atmosphere of this place, crossroad of Middle-European culture.
La collina di Ascona vanta una storia iniziata ai primi del Novecento, quando il Monte Verità divenne il centro di un movimento di ricerca spirituale e di rinnovamento della vita che coinvolse una nutrita schiera di intellettuali, studiosi e artisti provenienti soprattutto dall’Europa del Nord. Per circa un ventennio il parco e i boschi del monte ospitarono lo spirito dell’utopia. Molte tracce testimoniano di quell'epoca. Biking Ticino offers biking enthusiasts endless possibilities: from simpler cycling trails to mountain paths that are suitable for mountain biking, to more extreme downhill and freeride trails. We have chosen two routes that are accessible to bikers at all levels and also offer bike-hire-options. The first trail winds along a track devoted entirely to cycling. It is suitable for families and connects Ascona to Bellinzona, passing through Locarno and skirting the Ticino River. The second, from Airolo to Biasca, offers a unique, all descending experience featuring places of interest along the way.

6,000 Years of History in 3D/ 6000 anni di storia in 3D On the hill of Tremona, in the district of Mendrisio, you can discover what life was like in an ancient medieval village. Whilst walking through the ruins of the archaeological site wearing 3D glasses, you will see the surroundings as they once were. The TremonaCastello settlement was abandoned in the 14th century and later engulfed by the woods. Everything remained intact for centuries. It was then discovered in the 1980s by archaeologist Alfio Martinelli, who led the excavations 20 years later. The site embodies 6,000 years of Ticino’s history. Information panels are dotted along the trail.
Sulla collina di Tremona nel Mendrisiotto scoprite la vita quotidiana di un antico villaggio medievale ticinese grazie a occhiali 3D, che vi ripropongono la realtà di allora mentre passeggiate tra le rovine del sito archeologico. L'insediamento di Tremona-Castello fu abbondonato nel Trecento e in seguito inghiottito dal bosco. Tutto rimase intatto per secoli. Fu scoperto negli anni Ottanta dall’archeologo ticinese Alfio Martinelli, che iniziò gli scavi vent’anni dopo. Vi sono rappresentate le epoche di 6000 anni di storia ticinese. Foxtrail An amusing treasure hunt to discover the city of Lugano and its most picturesque corners. The teams, consisting of a minimum of two people, follow the tracks of a wily fox either on foot or by using public transport. The teams will be immersing in the culture of the city, with its magnificent sights and rich, historic background. To track the fox, participants must find and decipher secret messages or hidden clues and embark upon special missions. The trail starts from the Lugano Railway Station and ends in the of Piazza della Riforma. It is particularly suitable for families.
Una divertente caccia al tesoro per scoprire la città di Lugano percorrendo i suoi angoli più suggestivi. Le squadre, composte al minimo da due persone, seguono le tracce di una simpatica volpe spostandosi a piedi o con i mezzi pubblici. Si immergono nella cultura della città, con i suoi splendidi panorami e un ricco background storico. Per raggiungere la volpe i partecipanti devono impegnarsi a cercare e decifrare messaggi segreti o indizi nascosti e cimentarsi in missioni speciali. Il percorso inizia alla stazione ferroviaria di Lugano ed è particolarmente adatto alle famiglie.

The World of Clown Dimitri / Il mondo del clown Dimitri Those who saw clown Dimitri performing with Circus Knie (the Swiss national circus) in the Seventies have never forgotten him. For those who did not have the pleasure of meeting him, an experience at the Teatro Dimitri in Verscio, a picturesque village located just a few kilometres from Locarno, is the perfect opportunity to understand the magical universe and the art of one of the most famous clowns of modern times, who died in 2016. This, not only by watching a performance where you might meet the artists, before or after the show, but also by visiting a small museum and two exhibitions.
Coloro che negli anni Settanta hanno potuto vedere il clown Dimitri esibirsi nell’arena del circo Knie (il circo nazionale svizzero) non l’hanno più dimenticato. Wine / Vino Over the past 20-30 years Ticino's red wines have become of international caliber and during contests they appear as some of the best in the world. The most widespread vine in the Italian part of Switzerland (82%) is precisely that same Merlot that distinguishes the production of Bordeaux, and can also be made into whites with excellent results. Cured Meats / Salumi One of Ticino's most deep-rooted traditions is the ‘mazza’ (the processing of pork, but also goat’s meat and beef), a tradition that brought together families and village communities. The shift in lifestyle and the legislative requirements connected to the production of food saw the relocation of the ‘mazza’ from farms to slaughterhouses. In spite of this, flavours and know-how have remained intact and, nowadays, regional products on offer include salami, dried meat, lard, bacon, luganiga (a traditional fresh sausage produced in Northern Italy and in Ticino) and other local specialties.
Una delle tradizioni più radicate del Ticino è la ‘mazza’, cioè la lavorazione delle carni suine (ma anche caprine e bovine); un avvenimento che in passato, all’inizio dell’inverno, riuniva le famiglie e le comunità dei villaggi. Il cambiamento dello stile di vita e le esigenze normative legate alla produzione di beni alimentari hanno spostato la ‘mazza’ dalle fattorie ai macelli. Rimangono però intatti i sapori e i saperi, con prodotti tipici come il salame e i salametti, la carne secca, la coppa, il prosciutto crudo, il lardo, la pancetta, la mortadella, la luganiga e altre specialità locali.

Grotti Everybody to the grotto! An inviting password during the warm summer evenings when you are seeking a breath of fresh air. In Ticino, grotto (local tavern) is the synonym of relaxation, homemade food, polenta, cured meats, pasture cheeses and wine enjoyed outdoors. A field to play bowls and maybe the sounds of an accordion. A Ticino dear to tourists, but also authentic and well-established. Next to the public grottos there are also the private ones. Mendrisio hosts a full neighborhood of them, just like Giornico and Cevio. The proposed itinerary leads to Cama (Graubünden) where an entire grotto enclave was recovered.

Polenta In the past couple of centuries, polenta (cornmeal mush) together with chestnuts and potatoes, was the main aliment of the population of Ticino. Over time the regional cuisine – although enriched with aliments, flavors and recipes from Northern Italy and the countries of emigration – was able to preserve its main characteristics: genuine products, preference for strong flavors, simplicity of the dishes in relation to the rural world. The most renowned and appreciated is polenta accompanying cheeses, cured meats and typical recipes like braised beef, stews or jugged game-meat.
La polenta, assieme alle castagne e alle patate, costituiva nei secoli scorsi l'alimento principale della popolazione ticinese. Nel corso del tempo, la cucina regionale - sebbene si sia arricchita di cibi, sapori e ricette provenienti dal nord Italia e dai paesi dove si emigrava - ha saputo conservare le sue principali caratteristiche: prodotti genuini, predilezione per i gusti decisi, semplicità dei piatti legati al mondo rurale. Chestnuts / Castagne In Ticino, for centuries, chestnuts were an important staple food for peasants. The harvest would bring the entire community together and was regarded as a special moment, as it guaranteed subsistence for a good part of the year. Its precious fruits were consumed fresh, but also proved to have long shelf life, thanks to drying processes. Although, nowadays, the chestnut plays a secondary role in nutrition, traditions, recipes and lands associated with it are gradually being rediscovered. Chestnut woods and monumental trees are becoming tourist attractions, new gastronomic specialties are being created.
In Ticino le castagne sono state per secoli uno dei pilastri dell’alimentazione contadina. La loro raccolta coinvolgeva tutta la comunità ed era un momento importante perché garantiva la sussistenza per buona parte dell’anno: i preziosi frutti si consumavano freschi ma si conservavano anche per molti mesi, grazie all’essiccazione. Oggi la castagna ha un ruolo marginale nell’alimentazione ma si riscoprono tradizioni, ricette e territori ad essa legati. Le selve castanili diventano attrazioni turistiche, si fa l’inventario dei castagni monumentali, si creano nuove specialità gastronomiche.

Handicraft / Artigianato Handicraft – like folklore – reflects one of the deepest traditions of a region's soul. Even in Ticino, today like in the past, the use of materials such as wool, straw, wood or stone are expressions of manual ability, artistic touch, commitment to a constant search for functionality and attention to shapes and colors. Traces of handmade crafts from the past are found in ethnographic museums while specialised stores offer authentic products of contemporary craftsmanship. In some workshops and handicraft centres it is even possible to see the craftsmen or -women at work.
