They ruled the seven seas back in the 1600s and 1700s and even today are plundering sea vessels in international waters. They are pirates. From movies and books to real life, pirates fascinate people endlessly and probably always will. Tidbits walks the plank this week, in honor of National Talk L i k e a Pirate Day observed on September 19th. • Although Hollywood pirates, such as Jack Sparrow’s friends, like to grumble “arrr” or “arrrrgh” frequently, real pirates were not known to do so. Hollywood actor Robert Newton, who played Long John Silver in the 1950s, had a regional accent from the Cotswolds district of England where they like to roll the “r” a bit. However, your average real pirate did not.

• Pirates may have thrown men overboard, but no one was ever known to have “walked the plank.” Again, this one is a Hollywood myth. • Lady Ching Shih of China became one of the most powerful pirates to have ever sailed the ocean blue. She commanded one of the most formidable pirate fleets in all of Asia during the early 1800s, with hundreds of ships under her command.

PIRATES (continued):

• “Davy Jones’ Locker” is a real nautical term that dates back to the 1700s and refers to the bottom of the ocean and a graveyard for drowned sailors. • As early as 1611, there are written accounts describing a person who brings bad luck to a ship as a “Jonah.” If a man was marked as a Jonah, he was doomed to be thrown overboard. If the trouble persisted, the pirates might suspect they’d thrown the wrong man overboard and would sometimes toss the original accuser into the sea to appease the ghost of the innocent man. • Every pirate ship had its Code of Conduct specified by the pirate captain. While stealing was the pirate’s job, stealing amongst shipmates was severely punished. Some boats had a “zero tolerance” policy for internal theft that left you dead or marooned if caught. • No one has actually ever found a real pirate’s buried treasure map. Never too far from death, most pirates tried to enjoy their money quickly. At any rate, there aren’t any maps around today, unless some are still cleverly hidden. • Throughout history some women have preferred knives to knitting needles. Two of history’s most famous female pirates are Anne Bonny, born in Ireland, and Mary Read, born in England. Not wanting to live the subservient life expected of women during her day, Bonny won over the respect of her pirate crewmembers with her murderous and capable ways. She eventually became best friends with her fellow fierce, female pirate, Read. • As members of Captain “Calico” Jack Rackham’s crew, Bonny and Read disguised themselves as men and earned reputations as tough, fearless fighters. When Rackham and his crew were captured and sentenced to hang, Bonny, the captain’s girlfriend, reportedly told him: “Had you fought like a man, you need not have been hanged like a dog.”

Fashion Row has always been a shopping destination. In the beginning back in the 60’s, you “had to fight for a parking spot at Fashion Row” This is when the wave of New Yorkers moved down and made Florida their permanent residence. As the years went by, new places came along, and the charming and bustling row gradually deteriorated. Now, a new generation with a new vibe (including The City of Hallandale Beach Government) is moving in, working to revitalize and recreate a new and better than ever “Fashion Row Art District”.

What to expect at Fashion Row:

At Fashion Row Art District you can find an array of Boutiques, Art Galleries, Framing Shops, Restaurants, Cafés, Furniture Shops, Lighting Shops, Office Spaces, Perfume Shops…even Medical Equipment and more!

• Pirate ships flew Jolly Roger flags featuring motifs intended to intimidate, including skulls, crossbones, swords, skeletons, bleeding hearts and hourglasses, meant to symbolize that time was running out. • Port Royal, Jamaica, once known as the “wickedest city on earth” and as a wealthy haven for pirates, was devastated by an earthquake on June 7, 1692. Much of the thriving, densely populated community was destroyed. Port Royal was rebuilt and served as a British naval station in the 18th and 19th centuries. Today, it is a small fishing town and tourist destination. • “Treasure Island” by Scottish author Robert Louis Stevenson was first published serially in a children’s magazine between 1881 and 1882, under the title “The SeaCook.” It was published as a book in 1883. One of the main characters, the pirate Long John Silver, is nicknamed the Sea Cook. Silver, who is missing one leg, was reportedly inspired by a writer-editor friend of Stevenson’s who had lost a leg to disease.

• The Caribbean Sea gets its name from the Caribs, one of the main Native American Indian groups in the region when Spanish explorers arrived in the 15th century. The Caribs were known as fierce fighters and practitioners of cannibalism. Although largely eliminated by the Europeans in the 17th century, some Caribs survive today in Guatemala and Dominica.

• The pirate Blackbeard cultivated an intimidating image and put cannon fuses under his hat to scare people. Blackbeard died in a battle with British navy lieutenant Robert Maynard off the North Carolina coast in 1718.

2723 Hollywood Boulevard • Hollywood FL 954-921-9990

• In pirate language, “shiver me timbers” was used to express strong feelings or surprise.

Fashion Row History:

• The exact origin of Jolly Roger, the generic term for a pirate flag, is unknown. It may come from “Old Roger,” an English term for the devil, or from a corrupted version of the French “Jolie Rouge,” meaning “pretty red.” Pirate ships didn’t fly Jolly Rogers at all times; instead, they’d often fly fake flags until their victims or enemies came into view.

• The “Pirates of the Caribbean” ride opened at Disneyland in Anaheim, California, in 1967. It was reportedly the last attraction that Walt Disney (1901-1966) had a hand in planning before he died.

CASTLES When you think of something large, strong and majestic, you might be thinking about a castle. This type of fortress was built in multiple places and in multiple styles throughout history. • Castles were built to withstand attack from enemies. Castle builders added many defensive features to make their castles difficult to attack. Many castles were built on high ground with clear views of the surrounding land. • Castles with curtain walls with flanking towers were difficult to capture. These towers allowed wellprotected defenders to fire at attackers along the line of the castle walls, concentrating fire on particular points of heavy attack. A good early example of a castle with flanking towers is Framlingham in Suffolk, England. Along the curtain wall, at intervals, are 13 square or rectangular towers. • At the top of the castle walls were battlements, a protective, toothshaped parapet with a wall walk behind it for the soldiers to stand on. The defenders could fire missiles through gaps. The raised sections between are called merlons, which helped to shelter the defenders during an enemy attack. • Castles in the round: It was harder for attackers to make round towers collapse. Unlike square towers, they had no corners, which collapsed if holes were dug underneath the foundations. • European castles had their origins dating back to around AD 900 and played a great role in the then military system of feudalism.

BOCA RATON: 4201 N.W. OAK CIRCLE, BOCA RATON, FL 33432

• The great age of castles began almost 1,000 years ago and lasted for nearly 500 years. The first proper castles built in England were built after the Norman Conquest in 1066. They were introduced by William the Conqueror, when he invaded England from his homeland in France. • The famous Tower of London began as a timber fortress in an earthen enclosure on the north bank of the Thames in London. In 1078, William the Conqueror replaced this timber fortress with a massive stone fortress called the Great Tower. William needed to show his authority and protect his new kingdom. • In the Middle East, the Crusaders developed great castles with double circuits of curving outer walls and towers to overlook the entire wall. These castles influenced castle building throughout Europe and the British Isles, and the early 13thcentury medieval castle was a marriage of Norman, English and Byzantine styles. Two good examples of this are the Château Gaillard on the Seine in France and the Conisbrough Castle in England. • One of the last tower houses to be built in Scotland was Lethendy Tower, dating back to 1678. • No two castles are the same. This is due to topography, taste, available materials and the ability of the designer. • The spiral stairs in castle towers are designed to ascend clockwise in an effort to make the attackers expose more of their body in order to use the sword in their right hand. • At Exeter Castle in England in 1136, the garrison used wine to extinguish fires from a siege. • The largest inhabited castle in the world is Windsor Castle in the United Kingdom. • There were once about 5,000 castles in Japan, but today there are only about a dozen original feudal castles left.

HOLLYWOOD ... As if Angelina Jolie doesn’t have enough on her plate as the leading female star in action films today (her latest, “Salt,” has grossed upward of $250 million) and as the wife of Brad Pitt and the mother of all those kids, she now plans to step behind the camera and direct a film about the Bosnian War, which she has no doubt researched during all her visits to that region as a goodwill ambassador for the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees -- now that’s a mouthful! But first she will star opposite Johnny Depp in “The Tourist” in December.

Not everyone has gone Hollywood. Shia LaBeouf, star of the “Transformers” movies and now on the big screen in the “Wall Street” sequel with Michael Douglas, did not forget his humble beginnings. There were leaner days when he slept on the couch in his agent’s office for want of his own place. Then good parts in big movies came, and he left his agent for a bigger agency -- with her blessing. He remembered his agent’s kindness with a small percentage of his earnings from that day forward. You might say he wasn’t “Shi-a” gratitude!

Look for Jeremy Renner, last year’s Oscar nominee as best actor for “The Hurt Locker,” to get the big Hollywood star build-up. He will give Tom Cruise a run for his money in the next installment of the “Mission: Impossible” franchise, scheduled for release just before Christmas this year. Then Renner jumps right into “The Avengers,” set for a 2012 release.

And hasn’t Michael Douglas had enough misfortune? His son in jail, his ex suing over the sequel money for “Wall Street” -- which she thinks she got in the divorce -- and now that little bout with the big C he’s fighting right now. Just when things couldn’t be better with his beautiful and talented wife Catherine Zeta-Jones and his kids. He’s in our prayers.

And speaking of Tom Cruise, don’t expect his wife, Katie Holmes, to be sitting around waiting for him to come home from shooting. She’s set to star opposite Adam Sandler and Al Pacino (now that’s an interesting trio of casting) in “Jack & Jill.” But here’s the twist, folks: Adam Sandler plays twins ... yes, Jack & Jill. We can’t wait for this one!

In case you only know the name and face of Paul Newman from salad dressing and popcorn boxes at the market, you’ll have a chance to see him as a movie star when Sony releases the 1981 drama “Absence of Malice.” The film costars ABC’s “Brothers and Sisters” multiple Emmy winner Sally Field, who was a TV star in “Gidget” and “The Flying Nun” before she was a two-time Oscar winning movie star for “Norma Rae” and “Places In the Heart,” then became a TV star again. The film will be available on DVD and Bluray. By the way, all the money from every Paul Newman product goes directly to charity!

Get ready for a great new children’s book that tells the classic story of “The Wizard of Oz” in song. Illustrated beautifully by Warden Neil and sung by Tamara Walker, “It’s All About Dorothy” somehow manages to tell the entire story in only 36 lines. To sample a little of the book and song, go to www.itsallaboutdorothy.com.

The bags can be reused as electronic items are changed out, and although the cords all look the same, you can tell instantly what each is for.” -- U.L. in Maryland

Jungle Birthday Party for your Preschooler If there’s a birthday in your house this month, go on a safari! A birthday party safari that is, right in your own backyard or neighborhood park. “A jungle-themed party is always a roaring success for the preschool-age birthday kid,” says Nancy Troffey, a creative 55-year-old mom and grandmother with more than 20 years of experience directing preschool programs and summer camps. “Three’s and four’s are simply fascinated with wild animals. They can’t get enough of jungle-themed picture books, storytelling, games and puppets. When given the chance, they’ll jump right into pretending to act and make noises like their favorite animals, too.” It’s easy and inexpensive to plan your preschool child’s birthday-party adventure around this popular theme. Here are some basics to get you started: Mixer Activity As young party guests arrive, play a jungle sounds CD to set the scene. Give them something to do right away to help them feel comfortable with the surroundings and meeting new friends. Let them try on and choose a safari-style hat, and then decorate their own safari water canteen with animal stickers. The kids can hang it around their neck for the party. (Create the safari water canteens beforehand.) For each canteen, you’ll need: One small 10-ounce plastic or metal bottle filled with water and capped One 42-inch strip of 1-inch-wide animal print ribbon or cotton fabric cut with pinking shears One 3-by-10-inch rectangle of craft foam or poster board Wild animal stickers Directions: Glue the underside of the midpoint of the ribbon/fabric strip to the base of the bottle. Lift the halves of the strip upward evenly on each side. Glue the craft foam rectangle around the bottle and over the ribbon/fabric strip to secure them in place. Tie the loose ends of the strips in a knot. Safari Eats: --Peanut butter and banana finger sandwiches --Banana pudding with fresh fruit and animal crackers on top --Cookies made with animal-shape cookie cutters and coconut sprinkled over the frosting --Peanuts in the shell --Jungle juice (sparkling water mixed with fruit juice). Activities: --Play a safari game and look for hidden stuffed animals and plastic critters --Make paper bag animal puppets --Take a photo of each child, print from your computer, and let them frame it on an inexpensive frame to take home as a party favor. Tip: Enlist a neighborhood teen “helper” to plan games and interact with the energetic kids at the party. Coming in next week’s column: Make an easy jungle rain stick toy. *** Donna Erickson’s award-winning series “Donna’s Day” is airing on public television nationwide. Warts Keep Puppy Home From Day Care DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I have a 1-year-old golden retriever, “Hal,” and he has contracted puppy warts. I have been told there is no treatment for this, and the only recommendations I’ve received are to give him multivitamins and an occasional treat with honey on it. I’m hoping this will clear up in the next few weeks, as I usually put him in doggy day care two or three days a week, and they won’t allow him as this is extremely contagious. Do you have any tips on any other form of treatment that would clear this up? -- Sue, via e-mail DEAR SUE: Unfortunately, because puppy warts are caused by a virus, there is no treatment that will cure Hal quickly. The infection has to clear up on its own. Multivitamins will help keep Hal physically strong so that his immune system keeps working to get rid of the virus, but other than that,

time is the only cure. Puppy warts normally clear up after about 45 days. Be sure to just let them go away on their own, and don’t try to remove them yourself. It is inconvenient for your puppy to be banished from day care during this period, but hang in there. If you’re unable to stay with Hal all day or check in on him during your workday, ask a friend to stop in and spend some time with him so he’s not by himself in the house all day. If there’s one bright spot of news, it’s this: Once Hal recovers from puppy warts, he won’t catch them again. Have a question about your pet? Contact Sam at ask@ pawscorner.com., or write to Paw’s Corner, c/o King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Find more pet advice and resources at www. pawscorner.com. Supermarket Mystery Is a Tasty Treat We’re advised by medical experts to eat more fruits and vegetables daily to promote good health. Among their recommendations are to eat cabbage and other cruciferous vegetables several times a week to help reduce the risk of certain cancers such as colon and rectal cancer. Kohlrabi is a relatively unknown cruciferous vegetable. Cruciferous vegetables -- other than cabbage -- include broccoli, cauliflower, bok choy, kale, Swiss chard, Brussels sprouts and beet and mustard greens.

parts chopped 2 eggs, lightly beaten 1/2 cup whole wheat breadcrumbs 1/2 teaspoon grated or ground ginger 1/2 teaspoon cayenne or dried red pepper flakes 1 teaspoon ground black pepper 1/4 cup vegetable oil 1. Peel (large bulbs) and shred kohlrabi using a box or cheese grater. Sprinkle the kohlrabi with the salt and place it in colander to drain for 30 minutes. Squeeze out any excess moisture by rolling the shredded kohlrabi in a paper towel and wringing it out. 2. Combine the kohlrabi with the kohlrabi leaves, the green onions, eggs, breadcrumbs, ginger, cayenne or red pepper flakes, and the pepper. Blend well.

3. Heat the oil in large skillet over medium high heat. Form patties by placing two heaping tablespoons of the mixture in the oil and pressing it flat with a spatula. Fry until patties are golden brown, about 4 to 5 minutes per side. Drain on paper towels and sprinkle with salt. Serve with applesauce, or a dollop of low-fat sour cream or Greek yogurt mixed with chopped mint as a sauce.

Kohlrabi is a simple, nutritious way to incorporate more cruciferous vegetables into your diet. The leaves of a young kohlrabi can be used in the same way as kale. One cup of raw kohlrabi has only 40 calories and is high in vitamin C, potassium and fiber. Kohlrabi helps to stabilize blood sugar and is helpful for those with hypoglycemia and diabetes. It also can be effective against edema, candida and viral conditions.

Kohlrabi is available year-round. Of kohlrabi’s two varieties, the purple globe is sweeter and tastier than the apple-green. Both have a pale green, almost ivory-colored flesh inside. While the entire vegetable is edible raw or cooked, the small, young kohlrabi, about 1 1/2 inches to 2 inches in diameter, is ideal for its flavor and texture. The giant size is woody, and has a fibrous texture and inedible outer layer. The larger kohlrabi globes definitely need to be peeled before eating. Remove the stems by pulling or cutting them off the kohlrabi globe. The leaves can be chopped and cooked along with the bulb, or used as part of a tossed salad. The leaves have a mild flavor and take well to salad dressing. Store kohlrabi in a perforated plastic bag in the refrigerator crisper. It may maintain good quality for about one week. Although kohlrabi stores well, yellow leaves indicate that the vegetable is not fresh. You can use kohlrabi in variety of ways, including sliced or cut into julienne strips and eaten raw; grated, diced, fried or roasted like potatoes; steamed, stir-fried like water chestnuts or bamboo shoots, or grilled. Now that this supermarket mystery has been solved, give kohlrabi a try! CRISPY KOLARABI CAKES 4 Kohlrabi bulbs (approximately 1 1/2 pounds) 2 teaspoons sea salt Kohlrabi leaves from bulbs, (if available) washed and finely chopped 3 green onions, roots removed, and green tops and white

ANSWER: Has your daughter tried different brands of vitamins? The filler in some brands might be the cause of her stomach upset. Fillers are inactive ingredients that keep the tablet together. The question really is: Does your daughter, or anyone, need to take a vitamin (multivitamin or otherwise) daily? Vitamins are nutrients that the body doesn’t make for itself (except vitamin D). They’re needed in extremely small amounts. The era of beriberi, scurvy and rickets is all but over since the discovery of vitamins. Most doctors have never seen a case of those vitamin deficiency illnesses. Vitamins don’t pep us up and they don’t prevent heart disease or cancer as was once thought. In excess, they can be troublemakers. In spite of this, we’re conditioned to believe that we need a daily multivitamin. Half of the adult American population swallows one every day. We can meet all vitamin needs through foods, with the possible exception of vitamin D. A diet that supplies fruits, vegetables, grains, dairy products and some meat provides the necessary vitamins. Meat is the source for vitamin B-12, but vegetarians can get that vitamin in other ways. Vitamin D is a problem for many. Sunshine converts a substance in the skin into this vitamin. Many people don’t get enough sunshine exposure to achieve skin production of D, and people in northern climates can’t get enough during winter months. All it takes is 15 minutes of sun exposure on the face, arms and legs three times a week. Age is another possible factor in failing to meet vitamin demands if older people subside on a marginal diet of tea and toast. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I had a foot reconstruction operation some months ago. The foot doctor said I had to be off Celebrex until the foot completely healed. I had been on it for several years. I have osteoporosis and rheumatoid arthritis. Since being off Celebrex for four months, I don’t have any more pain or stiffness than I did while I was taking it. Do I really need it? -- V.M.

ANSWER: If a medicine isn’t doing anything for you, why take it? You’ve taken Celebrex for several years and now you’ve been off it for four months with no worsening of your symptoms. I’d say you made a strong case for not continuing it. Many, many other rheumatoid arthritis medicines are on the market. It’s time for a change, or perhaps for a medicine rest if your doctor agrees.

Is a Daily Vitamin Really Necessary? DEAR DR. DONOHUE: My adult daughter is unable to take vitamins without upsetting her stomach.
