• In 1955, Walt Disney opened Disneyland in Anaheim, California. It was a success, but Walt noticed that fewer than 5% of visitors came from east of the Mississippi River which is where 75% of the population lived. Four years after Disneyland opened, Walt Disney decided that what he really needed was a bigger, better version of Disneyland in the eastern U.S.: Disney World. • Florida was already known as a vacation hot spot. There was plenty of cheap vacant swamp land located in the middle of the state where it was sheltered from the worst of the hurricanes. There was a good airport in Orlando and the local highway system was well-developed. It was far enough away from the shores to avoid competition with the beaches. The weather was good year-round.

• Walt Disney died on December 15, 1966, before construction began. His brother Roy Disney took over the project. The Magic Kingdom opened for business in 1971. That was followed by Epcot Center in 1982, Disney’s Hollywood Studios in 1989, and Disney’s Animal Kingdom in 1998. Today, Walt Disney World is the most visited vacation resort in the world, with an average annual attendance of over 52 million.

A NEW WONDER WORLD

• In 1963 the Disney Company started buying up vacant land in the Orlando area in secret, using dummy corporations such as the M.T. Lott Investment Corp. to avoid price-gouging. Over 43 square miles were purchased for just $5 million dollars. That’s about the size of the city of San Francisco. It’s twice the size of Manhattan. Disney wanted to have plenty of room to expand.

DISNEY WORLD (continued):

all the secret and unsightly stuff happens: supplies brought in, trash taken out, props are stored, costumes are cleaned, etc. Although the Utilidor appears to be underground, that’s an illusion. The land was too swampy to build underground, so it’s actually the first floor of the compound, and the entire resort is built on top. When visitors are standing in front of Cinderella Castle, they may feel like they are standing at ground level, but they are actually on the 3rd floor of a gigantic building. • The daily fireworks display at the Magic Kingdom costs about $33,000 to put on, making Disney the largest consumer of fireworks in the world. • When you take a walk down Main Street and look at Cinderella’s castle, you might notice that the “bricks” get smaller the higher up the castle goes. It’s called “forced perspective.” The castle looks a little taller than it would if all the bricks were the same size. • Main Street in the Magical Kingdom is designed using forced perspective. When guest arrive in the morning, Main Street looks extremely long as it stretches towards Cinderella’s Castle. Once guests reach the castle and turn around to leave the park, Main Street looks very short as it heads towards the exit. • The colored concrete walkways in the Magic Kingdom seem to correspond to each section but are actually

Find All the Fun and Games Answers on Page 14! colored because Kodak and Disney found that light reflecting off colored concrete creates more vivid photographs. • The brownish winding path in Liberty Square is meant to represent raw sewage that flowed down the streets of Colonial America, since indoor plumbing wasn’t yet invented. • Throughout the resort there are thousands of “hidden Mickeys” worked into the designs: upholstery, artwork, wallpaper, flowerbeds, tile, and so on have subtle silhouettes of Mickey hidden in them. There’s one hidden Mickey you can only see once a year: Inside the Little Mermaid ride at Fantasyland, workers drilled three holes in the ceiling that become the perfect Mickey at noon on November 18, which is Mickey’s birthday. If you’re at that spot, the sun will shine through those holes and create a three-circle Mickey image on the wall. There is a streetlamp in Tomorrowland with three round hooded lights. At a certain times of the day it will cast a Mickey shadow on the ground.

For Advertising Information Call 954-667-3237 out Walt Disney’s speech at Disneyland’s opening in Morse code. • When in queue for Pirates of the Caribbean, note that the two skeletons playing chess have died playing because the chess game is at a stalemate that nobody can win. • While standing in line at Splash Mountain, guests may notice bird houses in the trees. If they pay careful attention, they may eavesdrop on the birds inside those bird houses and listen to them bickering. • The Magic Carpets of Aladdin features a camel that spits water at passing guests. An employee sits near the camel pressing the button whenever a guest is in range. • The vehicles that move guests through The Haunted Mansion are called “Doom Buggies.” They pass crypts with humorous names inscribed such as I.M. Ready, Rustin Peese, Pearl E. Gates, Dustin T. Dust, and Asher T. Ashes.

AMAZING FACTS

DETAILS OF DISNEY

• A group of feral cats live inside the compound, where they help keep the rodent population under control. They are fed at several permanent feeding stations and they all receive proper medical care.

• The water on the Jungle Cruise is dyed green in order to make it appear much deeper than it actually is. It also disguises the tracks that the boats travel on, as well as hiding trash.

• Gum isn’t sold anywhere on Disney World property, saving employees from scraping it off of pathways, railings, and tables.

• The Disney Transportation System is the third largest bus system in Florida with over 290 buses.

• The telegraph message at the train station is tapping

• Employees are instructed to always point with two fingers when giving directions, because pointing with one finger is an insult in some countries. • The costume department consists of 1.2 million pieces of clothing, making it the largest wardrobe department in the world. • If you were to wash and dry one load of laundry every day for the next 44 years, you’d clean about as much as the Cast Members at the Walt Disney World laundry do in a single day. • Wonder what Disney’s electric bill is for all of this? It’s nothing, because they have their own power plant.

HOLLYWOOD -- Jared Leto won an Oscar for playing a transsexual in "The Dallas Buyer's Club" (2013) and scored big with "Suicide Squad," playing the Joker. The film raked in $747 million at the box office. He next took on "Blade Runner 2049," which barely recouped its cost with a $259 million gross. His most recent film was "The Outsider," which he also produced for Netflix, with Emile Hirsch. Warners currently is expanding his "Joker" character from "Suicide Squad" into a major film. You may remember that Heath Ledger won an Oscar, posthumously, for playing the Joker in "The Dark Knight" (2008).

Saoirse Ronan, who received Oscar nominations for "Atonement" (2007) at age 13, "Brooklyn" (2015) at 21 and last year, at 23, for "Lady Bird," next will take on the title role in "Mary Queen of Scots," with Margot Robbie (her last year's Oscar competition) and former "Doctor Who" David Tennant. It will open Dec. 7. "Call Me by Your Name" Oscar nominee Timothee Chalamet is awaiting the release of Woody Allen's "A Rainy Day in New York," with Selena Gomez and Jude Law, and currently is filming the American/Australian co-production of "The King," with Lily-Rose Depp (daughter of Johnny Depp) and Robert Pattison. The film is an adaption of the Shakespearian plays "Henry IV" and "Henry V." It will be interesting to see if that will translate for modern filmgoers. Brad Pitt is one of the producers. Oscar winner Reese Witherspoon will revisit being "Legally Blonde" for the third time. The original 2001 film earned $141 million, while the sequel netted $124 million. In addition, a musical based on the film is still touring the U.S., proving its popularity. No cast or release date has been announced for "Legally Blonde 3."

Julia Roberts presented two-time Oscar winner George Clooney with the American Film Award in a June 7 ceremony, which aired June 8 on TNT. If you missed it, it will re-air in September on TCM. *** "The Addams Family" will never die. First it was a TV series with John Aston and Carolyn Jones (1962-1964), then several films with Raul Julia and Angelica Huston, as Gomez and Morticia, in 1991 (cost $30 million/gross $191 million) and 1993 ($47 million cost, $49 million U.S. gross). This time out it will be an animated film with the voices of Oscar Isaac (as Gomez), Charlize Theron (as Morticia), Bette Midler (as Grandmama), Chloe Grace Moretz (as Wednesday), Nick Kroll" (as Uncle Fester) and Oscar winner Allison Janney as their arch-enemy Margaux Needler. It's set for an October 2019 premiere. No mention of Thing or Cousin Itt. It just wouldn't be the same without Itt or ... uhh, them! (c) 2018 King Features Synd., Inc.

A: It shall be back for a fourth season, which will premiere this fall on Monday nights at 8/7c on the CW. I spoke with series star Adam Tsekhman (who plays Gary Green) about it, and he's excited to get back to the set in July. "They've created a lovely sort of egalitarian system on the set," he told me. "All the actors kind of sit together; there are no egos. Everyone's really sweet. I'm so lucky to be a part of it. And the role is so much fun. I get to work on my comedy chops and play in these fabulous environments. It's time traveling, and every moment could mean the end for every character. And then, while that's about to happen, someone (Gary) makes the jokes. So, it's really fun, goofy and amazing." Later this year, fans will get to see Adam explore his darker side when he co-stars in the feature film "Dragged Across Concrete." "It's about these two cops, Vince Vaughn and Mel Gibson, who get sucked down into the dark criminal world to save their reputations. And I am one of those dark characters -- Behzad, a used-car salesman. It's very dark. Very nefarious." *** Q: I remember you had written about a series reboot of the cult-classic film "Heathers," but I haven't seen anything about it lately. Do you know what's going on? — Gina R. in Indiana A: Paramount has canceled the reboot before an episode even had the chance to air on TV Land. It was originally slated to premiere in March, but that was pushed back due to the Parkland High School shootings. Then it was going

Adam Tsekhman Photo courtesy Adam Tsekhman

to premiere in July, but the Santa Fe High School shootings happened, so Paramount scrapped it altogether. The producers are actively searching for a new home for the series. Spoiler alert: "The Hollywood Reporter" sources say that season two was to be set in the 1700s and revolve around Marie Antoinette -- with many of the key cast members returning in new roles. With season one perhaps being too triggering in our current "gun climate," maybe they should just start with season two, which has a historical bent. It might make season one easier for some people to handle in the long run. *** Q: What can you tell me about these "Legally Blonde 3" rumors I've been hearing? -- Linda F., via email A: I can tell you that it is definitely happening, with Reese Witherspoon and almost all of the original creative team on board! It's been 15 years since "Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde" premiered, so I can't wait to see what Elle and the crew have been up to in the interim. The pie plates also make an unstable surface to jump on, which "Charlie" doesn't like either. Of course, that's not the only annoying thing my cat does! But I've had to pick my battles. -- Christine P., via email DEAR CHRISTINE: That sounds like an effective solution! Of course, you're placing the pie plates onto very stable surfaces, so the cat will land safely and can jump away safely.

For higher perches like bookshelves and wall shelves, a cat's ungraceful exit could send knickknacks or books flying. So, owners, if you intend to try this solution, make sure that shelves are stable and remove any items that might fall. PLASTIC SURGERY FOR PETS DEAR PAW'S CORNER: My 4-year-old pug, "Granby," is having surgery soon to correct a problem that makes it difficult for him to breathe. One of my friends said the procedure is nothing more than cosmetic surgery and that I ought to save my money. What do you think? -Mel in New York DEAR MEL: For pugs and other short-nosed breeds, surgery is sometimes necessary in order for them to breathe better. If their nostrils are malformed or too narrow, they can be widened to improve airflow. Or, if the soft palate (at the top of their mouth) is too long and causing breathing issues, surgery can be done to shorten the soft palate. While these may cause slight changes in Granby's appearance, they can drastically improve his quality of life and overall health. Pets are increasingly receiving cosmetic surgery. A CBS report said that dog owners in the U.S. spent $62 million in 2011 on such treatments. For pugs like Granby as well as many bulldogs and Boston terriers, corrective surgeries are often necessary. Likewise for shar-peis, which may need surgery to raise their eyelids, improving vision and preventing medical issues like scratched corneas. However, other procedures are more cosmetic -- lifting saggy skin around the face or abdomen, for example. And apparently some owners opt to give their dogs testicular implants after neutering, so they're (hopefully) less likely to notice or be bothered by the loss of their real testicles. On the plus side, Granby's surgery appears to be medically necessary and might be covered by some pet insurance plans.

HOW TO DISCOURAGE HIGH-FLYING CATS DEAR PAW'S CORNER: I'm writing in response to your article on the cat that insisted on jumping up on everything and getting to as high a perch as possible. I also have a "jumper." Often, he's an "attention jumper." For instance, if I'm on the phone, he'll jump on the stove to get my attention. What worked for me -- a little, at least -- was placing an aluminum pie plate on top of any area where I didn't want him to go. For example, I keep one on top of the stove and one on top of the refrigerator. When the cat jumps up and lands on a pie plate or knocks it onto

* It was noted 20th-century American novelist, short story writer and journalist Ernest Hemingway who made the following sage observation: "When you stop doing things for fun you might as well be dead." * It was German-born theoretical physicist Albert Einstein who made the following sage observation: "The hardest thing to understand is why we can understand anything at all." * If you're planning a trip to South Africa, you might want to keep in mind that there are 11 official languages there. * It is customary in India for those who celebrate Christmas to decorate a banana or mango tree -- evergreens being in rather short supply in most parts of south Asia. * Those who study such things say that a normal cat has 230 bones in its body, but it doesn't have a collarbone. * You've almost certainly heard people refer to the school they attended as their alma mater, but do you know where the term comes from? In Latin, "alma mater" means "bounteous mother," and it was in the early 1800s that people began using it to designate their beloved schools.

* You may be among those people who think good deeds and selfless acts are on the decline. If so, consider this story: In 2010, an employee at a recycling company came across 23 U.S. savings bonds while sorting through a bin of discarded papers. Instead of trying to cash the $22,000 worth of bonds himself, Mike Rodgers decided to track down the owner. It turned out that the woman who had bought the bonds, Martha Dobbins, had been dead for almost two decades. Rodgers didn't give up, though; he began a search for Robert Roberts, who was also named on the bonds. Though the name is common and Rodgers hit many dead ends, he eventually located the correct Robert Roberts, the son of Martha Dobbins. Roberts hadn't even been aware of the bonds' existence. Rodgers, his good deed finally being done, refused a reward. * Ever wonder what the opposite of reverse is? It's obverse -- the front or principal part of an object. On a coin, for instance, the obverse is "heads" and the reverse is "tails." *** Thought for the Day: "The secret of life is to appreciate the pleasure of being terribly, terribly deceived." -- Oscar Wilde (c) 2018 King Features Synd., Inc.

STRAWBERRIES — THE PERFECT SUMMER FRUIT Strawberries have been considered a tasty and nutritious treat for hundreds of years. Nutritional experts believe that strawberries are as close as you can get to a perfect fruit. They're low in calories (27 in 100g) and fat-free, but packed with nutrients, including vitamins and antioxidants that bring numerous health benefits. Eating just five strawberries gives you more vitamin C than an orange. The vitamin content in strawberries drops quickly, so you need to eat them as soon as you can after they've been picked. The strawberry got its name from the common practice of growing berries under straw to protect them from winter cold and late spring frosts. A member of the rose family, the strawberry sometimes gives off a rose-like aroma. Many speculate about how the luscious fruit was discovered. It is known that the strawberry goes as far back as the Romans, and perhaps even the Greeks.

any soft or brown patches. Never buy strawberries that are green or hard, or that look dry, dull or wrinkled. When buying berries packed in a basket, check the bottom to see if there is a juice stain. This means that the strawberries at the bottom are crushed. Always dispose of any berries that have signs of mildew or are rotten, as they'll contaminate the rest. Refrigerating strawberries ruins the flavor, and the strawberry aroma is easily picked up by other foods in the refrigerator. Store the berries in a cool place. Strawberries should be lightly rinsed, not washed, before serving, and eaten as soon as possible. This recipe for Strawberry Flower Cups is an easy way to serve fresh berries as a dessert or to use as a beautiful decoration. The strawberries are cut to resemble flower petals then stuffed with sweetened cream cheese. It's a cool, delicious way to showcase these beautiful berries!

STRAWBERRY FLOWER CUPS 32 fresh, whole strawberries, large

The strawberry plant was originally grown in Northern Europe, but wild species also are found in Russia, Chile and North America. At one time, wild strawberries grew everywhere from Canada to the Carolinas and westward beyond the Appalachian Mountains.

12 ounces cream cheese, softened 1/2 cup confectioners' sugar 1/4 teaspoon almond extract

Before modern refrigeration, a day of "strawberring" meant a long day of picking, followed by gorging on delicious strawberry treats -- pies, tarts, shortcake and all the ripe strawberries the family could consume. Berries that were not eaten were preserved as jam, jelly, sauce, strawberry vinegar and strawberry tonic, a medicinal drink. The remaining berries were dried on flat rocks for several days. These dried berries would be used throughout the fall and winter in breads, cakes, puddings and porridge. The first American species of strawberry was cultivated in about 1835. Today, the strawberry is the leading small fruit crop in the U.S. It is farmed from Florida to Alaska, with the largest strawberry growing centers located in California and Florida. When picking or buying packages of strawberries, look for ripe, shiny and brilliantly colored berries without

2 tablespoons semisweet or milk chocolate, grated 1. Lightly rinse the strawberries and gently place them in a colander to drain. Cut a thin slice from the stem end of each strawberry to create a base so that the berries will stand upright on the flattened end. Place the berries, cut side down, on a cutting board. Carefully cut each berry into 4 wedges, but do not cut through the bottom. Use your finger to gently press down in the center of the berry so that the wedges fan out just slightly, taking care not to break the berries apart. Set the berries aside. 2. Using a small mixing bowl, beat together the cream cheese, confectioners' sugar and almond extract until light and fluffy. Gently fold in half of the grated chocolate. Use a teaspoon, a plastic sandwich bag with a small hole cut into the end or a decorating bag with decora-

Makes about 32 filled strawberries. *** Angela Shelf Medearis is an award-winning children's author, culinary historian and the author of seven cookbooks. CRAFT A BIRD FEEDER FROM RECYCLED MILK JUG Swish! Swish! Swish! The chubby brush goes in all directions on a big sheet of easel paper. "Jameson loves to paint," says mom and athletic trainer Natalie Whitfield. I want to encourage his love for art, so it was time to find something to paint on that isn't just paper (or potentially our house)," she says with an "I know where this joy of painting could lead" kind of expression. "How about making and painting a bird feeder?" she thought -- and do it the recycling way with a plastic milk jug. She and her 3-year-old made a plan for their first big craft project, and then went to a store to choose paint and shiny stickers. Supplies for the "roof" became a second outing -- a nature-walk adventure to collect twigs. Just the right ones.

6. Scoop birdseed inside. Hang from a tree or bird feeder stand. As birds come, identify them, take pictures and talk about your sightings.

Now that President Donald Trump has totally alienated the leaders of the traditional U.S. allies before escaping from Canada, it's easy to see what he hopes to gain from that experience when he sat down with Kim Jong Un in Singapore. North Korea could give him some pointers on how the United States will exist as another pariah nation. No, we're not one yet, but the other G-7 heads of state could barely hide their disgust and were talking openly about becoming the G-6 now that Trump is blasting the Old World Order of trade agreements and so many geopolitical arrangements, turning things into the New World Disorder. The group used to be the G-8, but the other members tossed out Russia in 2014 over Vladimir Putin's decision to take over Crimea. Now the president has added another layer to the antagonism, by pushing to have Russia readmitted. First Vlad, then China's Xi Jinping, Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey and now Kim. I'm hardly the first one to wonder why the leader of the free world, meaning POTUS, seems to get along with those who rigidly rule their unfree countries while picking fights nonstop with those who govern countries with a tradition of democracy. Mind you, there is much to improve in a rigged worldwide system that has calcified since it was cobbled together after World War II. Still, mindlessly upending the intricately woven military, diplomatic and economic tapestry will leave it in tatters if change is not accompanied by careful planning and execution. Now at the G-7's latest confrontation (everything with Donald Trump is a confrontation), Trump threatens to end trade with our longstanding international trade partners. That is obviously absurd -- unless he comes up with a way to make up for it with North Korea as an economic cohort. As he was winging away, the Trumpster disclosed that the U.S. had refused to sign on to the usual communi-

que that glosses over diplomatic disappointments. He exploded on Twitter, referring to the G-7 host, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, as "dishonest and weak." That was after Trudeau had made uppity statements describing what really was a Trump-vs-everyoneelse series of arguments. By now, just about anyone who deals with Donald Trump understands that part of that process will inevitably involve personal attacks. After a while, some might conclude that with the unavoidable abuse from such a crass individual, it isn't worth it, even though he is temporarily in charge of the world's most significant economy, at least until he fritters it away. His base might be thrilled by all his tough bluster, but how would they feel being unemployed when there's no market for American goods and the jobs shrivel away.

in a row for post-surgical infection rates, there's a problem there that hasn't gone away. If your hospital scores low in using bar codes to dispense medication (scanning the patient wrist band before giving medication), you'll know that's something to keep an eye on, especially if you're asleep and unaware of being given medication. If your hospital has a zero rate of post-surgical infections, that's something else you need to know. Be sure to click the blue icon to read more about the rating for each item. In some cases a low number of bars is good, in others it indicates a problem.

HOW DOES YOUR HOSPITAL STACK UP? Just because your local hospital received a good rating in the past doesn't mean the rating has stayed the same. Things change, for good and for bad. If you're about to have surgery or need to pick out a new medical facility, check online sites to see what the latest scores are for hospitals near you. Leapfrog Group is one of the organizations that collects data and reports hospital performance through its Hospital Safety Grade. Go online to www.leapfroggroup.org and look for Compare Hospitals. Put in your city and state and search within 10 to 200 miles from you. The ratings are updated twice a year to reflect changes in the level of care. later. Once the interior walls in your house get warm, it's hard to bring those temperatures down. * Consider sun-blocking drapes for windows on the south and west side of the house. Keep them closed during the heat of the day. * Join afternoon activities at the library and senior center. That way you'll be in air conditioning when the heat is at its worst. If you can get to the mall, go there. Sit in the food court and read a book, or walk some laps for exercise. * Plan your errands for early or late in the day.

What about your doctor, especially if you're about to see a new one? First ask people you know for recommendations or comments. HERE'S HOW TO STAY COOL THIS SUMMER Summer isn't officially here, but there is at least one location in the country where the temperature today reached 100 degrees F. Much of the Sunbelt already is seeing highs in the 90s. All of those numbers are going to rise in the coming weeks. It's the time of year for seniors to beware the heat. Here are some tips: * If you have window air conditioners that someone installs for you each year, schedule it earlier rather than

* Call your doctor's office and ask about your water intake. Be sure to tell them all of your medications; some drugs can make it too easy to become dehydrated, especially if you take diuretics. Remember that sugary drinks don't count as liquid intake. * Keep an eye on your neighbors if they're out in the yard. If you go out, use a wide-brim woven hat. Check the weather and keep an eye on the heat index. Wear loose cotton clothing. Remember: We seniors don't always know when we're getting overheated. Heat exhaustion or heatstroke can creep up on us because our circulatory system doesn't work like it used to. Know the symptoms of heat exhaustion: weakness, headaches, dizziness and muscle cramps. The more serious heatstroke can follow only 10-15 minutes later. (c) 2018 King Features Synd., Inc.

EATING LEAVES MOUTH WITH SOUR TASTE DEAR DR. ROACH: My wife, age 70, complains frequently of a sour taste in her mouth soon after eating. I thought she had esophageal reflux, but I did not find that sour taste is one of the symptoms. She has no heartburn, but the taste occasionally improves after taking an antacid. -- B.P. ANSWER: Gastroesophageal reflux disease can have no symptoms, or many. Sour taste is, in fact, a common symptom. This is the "reflux" of the condition's name, since it refers to the backward movement of stomach acid -- all the way into the back of the throat or even into the mouth. Heartburn is perhaps the most common symptom, but so is difficulty swallowing. This is more common in people with longstanding symptoms. Antacids neutralize the acid in the stomach but do not prevent the reflux of stomach contents. Widely prescribed medications, including H2 blockers like Zantac or Pepcid ("H2" is a type of histamine receptor, a stimulus for acid production) and proton pump inhibitors (like Prilosec or Nexium, which directly reduce acid secretion), also act on the acid in the stomach, and do not reduce reflux. In order to reduce reflux, I recommend eating smaller meals, not reclining for two to three hours after eating, losing weight if appropriate and avoiding products that weaken the lower esophageal sphincter, the valve-like muscle at the bottom of the esophagus. Alcohol and tobacco are the biggest offenders. Raising the head of the bed (traditionally with a brick, but foam wedges also are good) uses gravity to help the refluxed acid get out of the esophagus. Reducing reflux or acid at night is most important. While the body is in a horizontal position, the acid can stay longer in the esophagus and cause damage.

*** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am very concerned about my 81-year-old sister. She is 4 feet 10 inches tall and weighs 78 pounds. This is a new low weight for her. She recently had bloodwork done and was told she has an underactive thyroid and should take medication for it. She also has a colon problem and COPD. I thought that with an underactive thyroid, you gained weight, not lost. Can you explain the difference between underactive and overactive thyroid? -- C.K. ANSWER: The thyroid gland in the neck produces thyroid hormone, which affects every tissue in the body. People with an underactive gland (called hypothyroid) tend to gain weight, may have dry skin, and slow bowel movements, and can be lethargic or sluggish. People with overactive thyroid (hyperthyroid) usually are the opposite: full of energy, thin and intolerant of heat. The diagnosis is confirmed by blood tests of thyroid levels.

OBESITY AND PROCESSED MEATS LINKED TO CANCER PLANT-BASED DIETS GOOD FOR HEART HEALTH Vegetarian, especially vegan, diets are associated with a healthier cardiovascular profile, according to a new review published in Progress in Cardiovascular Diseases. Physicians Committee researchers looked at multiple clinical trials and observational studies and found strong and consistent evidence that plant-based dietary patterns may prevent and reverse atherosclerosis and decrease other markers of CVD risk, including blood pressure, blood lipids, and weight.

HIGH-PROTEIN DIETS INCREASE RISK FOR HEART FAILURE Men who consume more protein are more likely to have heart failure, according to a new study published by the American Heart Association. Researchers followed 2,441 middle-aged men for more than two decades as part of the Kuopio Ischaemic Heart Disease Risk Factor Study and found that participants who ate the most total protein and

The World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) and the American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR) released recommendations to limit processed meat intake and increase plant-based foods as part of their Third Expert Report, Diet, Nutrition, Physical Activity and Cancer: a Global Perspective. However, these common conditions occasionally look very different from the normal. I have seen people with severe hyperthyroidism be lethargic to the point of apathy. Weight gain or loss isn't inevitable with thyroid disease. However, with severe COPD, weight loss is almost universal. The COPD may be a bigger contributor to her weight loss. But with a body mass index of 16.3, she is dangerously underweight and needs further evaluation and treatment. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. SHELL-SHAPED WATCH HOLDER Shell-shaped decorative objects were very popular during the 19th century. There were trinket boxes covered in tiny shells, counter bells made with several mother-of-pearl shells put together into a container, or nautilus shells used as part of cleverly shaped lamps that held a special light bulb. Some large conch shells were kept whole as decorations, often with the addition of a cameo carved into part of the shell. Glassmakers adapted the shell shape to their medium, and during the late 1800s, many "shells" were made of colored glass that was decorated with enamel paint or held in elaborate metal frames. A shell-shaped cranberry glass watch holder with enameled decorations was auctioned recently. The almost egg-shaped glass was held in a gilt metal frame with leaves, flowers and a bird finial. The unusual piece, probably American, sold for $708 at a Conestoga auction in Pennsylvania. It was lined with padded fabric to protect the watch. A pocket watch kept in a holder on a table near the bed served as a bedroom clock. *** Q: My mother gave me a small box, 6 1/2 by 3 3/4 by 1 1/4 inches, with five small dolls inside. Each doll is 3 1/2 inches tall. It says on the top of the box "Best Maid Quintuplets," "No. 63077" and "Made in Japan." Is this of any value? A: The Dionne quintuplets, Yvonne, Annette, Cecile, Emilie and Marie, were born in Canada on May 28, 1934. They were the first quintuplets to survive infancy. When they were four months old, they became wards of the Canadian government and were put under the guardianship of Dr. Dafoe, the doctor who delivered them. The girls lived in the Dafoe nursery, where they became a major tourist attraction. They returned to live with their family in 1943. Thousands of special dolls and souvenirs were made picturing the quints at different ages. Annette and Cecile are still alive. The value of your dolls is about $20. *** CURRENT PRICES Calendar, 1941, Bensing Bros. and Denney, pin-up girl, bathing beauty, brunette in black swimsuit, cardboard litho, Earl Moran, 10 x 5 inches, $15. Serving dish, dachshund dog shape, 2 hot dog trays with "mustard and relish" condiment sections, 1950s, 7 x 10 inches, set of 3, $60.

This unusual watch holder, 11 inches high, sold for over $700. It had minor wear and unusual color. Eye exam chart, wooden plaque, two-sided, black metal frame, E.B. Meyrowitz Surgical Instruments Co., 1935, 8 x 6 inches, $375. Patio chair, flying saucer-shaped, rattan sphere on iron frame, flared legs, vinyl seat cushions, Ritts Tropitan, c. 1945, 30 x 28 inches, pair, $1,350. TIP: Decorators say you should think in threes. Accessories on a table look best when grouped in odd numbers.
