July 15 – 21 is National Rabbit Week, and Tidbits is zeroing in on the details of these members of the Leporidae family. • According to the American Rabbit Breeders Association, there are 45 recognized breeds of rabbits. More than half of wild rabbits live in North America, with the rest scattered throughout the world on every continent but Antarctica. They’re found in meadows, forests, grasslands, deserts, and wetlands.

• There are a few very rare endangered species of rabbits, including the Sumatran striped rabbit, found only on the island of Sumatra, Indonesia, at altitudes between 1969 and 5249 feet (600 and 1,600 m). There are only about 5,500 Amami rabbits alive, found only on two Japanese Islands, Amami and Tokuno. The Volcano Rabbit, also known as the teporingo or zacatuche, is the world’s second-smallest rabbit, and lives only near four Mexican volcanoes south of Mexico City. • Rabbits burrow in underground tunnel systems known as warrens. They have a unique way of preventing themselves from getting stuck in the tunnels. Because their whiskers are the same width as their bodies, if the whiskers don’t fit, neither will the body! • Although the average rabbit is about the size of a cat, (13 to 20 inches [34-50 cm] in length and 2.4 to 5.5 lbs. [1.1 – 2.5 kg]), the checkered giant can weigh over 11 lbs. (5 kg), the Flemish giant more than 13 lbs. (5.9 kg), and the giant chinchilla rabbit between 12 and 16 lbs. (5.4 to 7.2 kg). The record for the world’s longest rabbit belongs to Darius, a Flemish giant who measures 4 feet, 3 inches (129 cm) and weighs about 50 lbs. (22.7 kg). Darius is also considered the world’s most valuable rabbit, is insured for $1.6 million, and has his own personal bodyguard. The owner claims the rabbit thinks he is a dog!

RABBITS
• Have you ever seen a rabbit jump in the air, turning and twisting its body? That activity is known as a “binky,” and it simply means the rabbit is happy!
(continued):
• The smallest species is the pygmy rabbit, a tiny little creature just 8 inches (20 cm) long, weighing less than a pound (500 grams). Their home is in the West, in Montana, Idaho, Oregon, Utah, and northeastern California, where much of their diet is sagebrush.
• The rabbit is the fourth animal in the Chinese Zodiac calendar, and includes individuals born in 1939, 1951, 1963, 1975, 1987, 1999, and 2011. For those born in a rabbit year, lucky colors are red, pink, purple, and blue, while lucky numbers are 3, 4, and 6. According to Chinese lore, rabbits are kind, gentle people, full of love. They are quiet, patient, skillful, compassionate people who treat others politely, but have a tendency to be melancholy. During rabbit years, it’s believed by many that rabbits themselves should be more careful about all aspects of their lives. The next Rabbit year will be 2023.
• Rabbits are herbivores, dining on plants only, including grasses, clover, and frequently vegetables from your garden, such as carrots, broccoli, and Brussels sprouts. They might also eat fruits, seeds, roots, buds, and tree bark. They can chew an unbelievable 120 times per minute. They have 28 teeth to accomplish this purpose, teeth that never stop growing throughout the rabbit’s entire life! Continual gnawing of their food wears the teeth down, and an annual growth of 3 to 5 inches (7.6 to 12.7 cm) is not unusual. • Because rabbits are the prey of several animals, they are always keeping an eye out for predators, such as coyotes and foxes. If danger is perceived, they warn their fellow bunnies by thumping their hind legs before heading for the safety of their burrow. Rabbits have highly-developed hearing, and they can hear that thumping from far away. They dodge their predators by running in a zigzag pattern at speeds approaching 18 mph (29 km/h). • Panoramic 360-degree vision also helps rabbits be aware of predators in all directions. Their only blind spot is right in front of their nose. Even better than their eyesight is their sense of smell. They can smell a predator even before they see them. • A rabbit’s ears will reach a length of up to 4 inches (10 cm). The ears can move independently of each other, enabling the bunny to determine the direction from which a sound is coming. • Most of us have heard of the extreme reproductive habits of rabbits, leading to the phrase “multiplying like rabbits.” Rabbits breed three or four times a year, with each litter between 4 and 12 babies after a short 30-day gestational period. Females are capable of reproducing at just 4 months of age, which means that in a single year, one female can produce as many as 800 children,
grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. And that’s even with only 15% of baby rabbits surviving to their first birthday. The largest reported litter was 24 rabbits. Wild rabbits can produce as many as eight litters of bunnies a year. • Baby domestic rabbits are born furless and won’t open their eyes until they are about two weeks old. Their average lifespan is around 5 to 8 years. First-time rabbit owners should be aware that keeping a rabbit outdoors will cut his life span in half, with risks of extreme heat and cold, illness, and predators. Even if a predator can’t make its way inside the rabbit hutch, the bunny can actually have a heart attack just from seeing the predator outside. • Do you know your rabbit terminology? Baby rabbits are known as kits or kittens. Males are bucks and females are does. The original name for babies was “rabbit,” with adults being called “coneys.” “Bunny” doesn’t refer to a baby rabbit, it’s just a term of affection – there’s no difference between a bunny and a rabbit. However, a rabbit and a hare are not the same. Hares are larger and faster, and have longer ears and feet than rabbits. They are born covered with hair, with their eyes open, and they can run within just a few minutes of birth.

* On July 15, 1606, Dutch master Rembrandt van Rijn is born in Leiden, the son of a miller. His humble origins may help account for the uncommon depth of compassion given to the human subjects of his art. * On July 11, 1916, President Woodrow Wilson signs the Federal Aid Road Act. Since the mid19th century, the building and maintenance of roads had been seen as a state and local responsibility. * On July 13, 1930, France defeats Mexico 4-1 and the United States defeats Belgium 3-0 in the first-ever World Cup soccer matches, played simultaneously in host city Montevideo, Uruguay. The World Cup has since become the world's most watched sporting event. * On July 9, 1947, in a ceremony at the Pentagon, Gen. Dwight Eisenhower appoints Florence Blanchfield a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army, making her the first woman in U.S. history to hold permanent military rank. * On July 14, 1968, Atlanta Braves slugger Henry "Hank" Aaron hits the 500th home run of his career. Aaron retired in 1976 as the all-time leader in runs batted in, extra base hits and total bases. He was named to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1982. * On July 12, 1984, Walter Mondale, Democratic presidential candidate, announces his choice of Rep. Geraldine Ferraro of New York as his running mate, the first woman nominated by a major party for the vice presidency. * On July 10, 1992, the Alaska court of appeals overturns the conviction of Joseph Hazelwood, the former captain of the oil tanker Exxon Valdez. Hazelwood, who was found guilty of negligence for the massive oil spill in Prince William Sound in 1989, argued that he was entitled to immunity because he had reported the oil spill 20 minutes after the ship ran aground. HOLLYWOOD -- Talks are on between "Roseanne" producers (who include actress Sara Gilbert) and ABC to breathe new life into the recently canceled "Roseanne." The main catch is that ABC says it would only proceed with a spinoff if Roseanne Barr has absolutely no involvement creatively, financially or otherwise. Barr has always had a creative credit and ownership of the original series. Now lawyers have to figure out if she has creative or financial entitlement of spin-offs because the show is based on the titled character she created. In anticipation of working this out, ABC is holding the timeslot open for the spin-off, which probably will be called "The Connors." *** At the end of "Wonder Woman," we were led to believe that Steve Trevor, played by Chris Pine, had died. However, now that "Wonder Women 1984" is in production with Gal Gadot, Kristen Wiig and possibly, as rumored, TV "Wonder Woman" Linda Carter, Chris Pine is returning, and you can be sure not in flashbacks or as a ghost. It's set for a November 2019 release. Tim Burton -- who gave us such classics as "Beetlejuice" (1988), "Edward Scissorhands" (1990), three "Batman" films, "Planet of the Apes" (2001), "Charlie & the Chocolate Factory" (2005) and the epic "Alice in Wonderland" (2010) -- is unveiling his live-action epic remake of "Dumbo," with Danny DeVito, Colin Farrell, Michael Keaton, Eva Green and Alan Arkin, in March. One of the major changes made to the classic animated film was shifting the crowning moment, when Dumbo makes his first flight, from the end of the film to the beginning. Sure sounds like fun. *** Barbra Streisand was nominated for an Emmy for her

recent Netflix special "Barbra: The Music ... The Mem'ries ... The Magic!," which she now says could well be her last live concert ... EVER! She has been working on her memoirs for more than three years and is five songs into completing her next album. She has not given up on starring in a remake of "Gypsy," which she feels would be the perfect way to bookend her movie career, having starred in "Funny Girl," which was written by Jule Styne, who also composed the music for "Gypsy." So what would the 76-year-old superstar do besides being Mrs. James Brolin, a star in his own right as one of the leads of the hit CBS series "Life in Pieces"? "Well," she says, "I just want to direct," and as the only female director to win a Golden Globe as best director, why not? Finally, Ben Affleck's next film is called "The Has Been," which he almost became after the colossal flop "Gigli," with Jennifer Lopez, which cost $75 million and made only $7 million! Q: It's been a while since I've heard anything about "Ozark." Can you give me any information? It will be back, won't it? -- Christopher T., Alliance, Ohio A: The Jason Bateman-starring drama will return to Netflix for its second season on Aug. 31, when the streaming network drops 10 brand-new episodes. Judging by the trailer for new season, it's going to be even darker than the first (if that's even possible). The preview opens with the Byrde family attending a funeral, with Wendy's (Laura Linney) voiceover to Marty (Jason Bateman): "We've done a lot of things -- things that we said we would never do. ... What is the endgame?" I'm am eager to find out. *** Q: One of my guilty pleasures is binge-watching "Forensic Files," and I came across an interesting episode about an author, Michael Peterson, accused of killing his wife, and at the end, they had a postscript written on-screen to say that he got a new trial and ended up being released. What's the story behind that? -- Gina T., via email

A: I remember hearing about this case when it came out, and it has more twists and turns than one of Michael's own novels. "The Staircase," which was originally released in 2004 in France, is a 13-part miniseries on Netflix that tells the whole story of the murder, the new trial and suppositions about what Michael says actually happened that night. It is quite engrossing and really explores the American judicial system. If you liked "Making a Murderer," then give "The Staircase" a try. *** READERS: I am super sad to report that NBC has decided to cancel "Timeless." The time-traveling drama made histo-

ry (pun intended) last year when it was canceled after its first season, and then quickly uncanceled a few days later. Season two brought us so many more answers -- with just as many questions -- as Lucy, Wyatt, Rufus, Jiya and Flynn spent each week trying to stop Rittenhouse's plan to change history and take over the world. The season finale had present-day Lucy (played by Abigail Spencer) and Wyatt (Matt Lanter) coming face to face with their future selves, when the latter showed up in a blinged-out lifeboat, urging them to get on board if they wanted to save Rufus. But all is not completely lost: Everyone involved has expressed interest in filming a two-hour movie to help wrap up loose ends. Co-creator Shawn Ryan tweeted: "If NBC is sincere in wanting a two-hour movie to give much needed closure to our amazing @NBCTimeless fans, we are ready to make it." As of this writing, no official movie announcement has been made, and maybe I'm still holding out hope that another network will pick it up. Netflix saved Fox's "Lucifer"; is it too much to ask to save my favorite time-traveling history buffs? If she has a tough time at the groomer's, she probably won't like the dyeing process either. Remember, Sheera is a beautiful dog even without that funky color. If she isn't bothered at all by the process or the look of her newly colored fur, that's great. But give it a lot of thought.

LICENSE FOR INDOOR CATS IS A SCAM, READER SAYS DEAR PAW'S CORNER: I disagree with what you wrote about buying a license and tags for cats that stay indoors. Requiring a license for indoor cats is such a government scam. It's just another dirty local tax to burden the people with -- like the little fees on our phone bills! I love my country, but these hidden taxes aren't right. -- Tim in Lancaster, Ohio DEAR TIM: I know how frustrating it can be to pay additional fees for many things, especially when prices are rising for products like gasoline. But I also stand by my original article. Even indoor cats need routine vaccinations and, if mandated, license tags. Even the best pet owner in the world can be impacted by unforeseen events. Say a natural disaster hits, like a tornado or a mudslide -- something with little or no warning. In the chaos, pets can and will escape to a safer place. For example, during a recent house fire in my community, firefighters rushed in to save the homeowner, who was trapped with her dog in a back bedroom. They were able to get her to safety, unhurt. However, she lost her hold on the dog, who ran into the woods, terrified. It took a few days of searching before it was found and matched back to its owner thanks to his license tags and microchip. Vaccinating and licensing indoor pets is a comparatively low-cost way to improve pets' chances of staying healthy and being quickly reunited with their owners should they escape. While it's good for citizens to be aware of and question different taxes and fees, this is one fee that is worth the price.
SAFELY COLOR PET'S HAIR DEAR PAW'S CORNER: I really would like to color my dog's hair. "Sheera" is an all-white poodle mix, and when she's groomed and coiffed she looks better than purebred poodles. (She's beautiful to me even when her coat is all grown out and she needs a bath, of course!) However, I've seen news reports that dyeing a dog's coat could be dangerous. Can you tell me if it's safe? -- Jenna H. in San Diego DEAR JENNA: Using hair dye made for humans is very dangerous for all pets. Chemicals in hair dye can be life threatening, as a Florida pet owner found out earlier this year. Not only can the pets' skin react to the chemicals,

In 1909 he established the Hershey Industrial School for Orphaned Boys, and 10 years later he donated control of the company to a trust for the school. Today the institution is called the Milton Hershey School, and it continues to have a controlling interest in the candy company.
* It was popular British romance author Jilly Cooper who made the following observation: "The male is a domestic animal which, if treated with firmness, can be trained to do most things." * If you're like the average human, you blink about 17,000 times every day. * Most lizards are harmless reptiles, but there are some that are known to be venomous. Rather than avoiding these rare creatures, however, there are some who seek them out for the very venom that makes them dangerous. It seems that there's a component to the venom that causes blood pressure to drop in humans, which could save thousands of lives.
* Filmmaker George Lucas is arguably best known for his "Star Wars" franchise, but he also directed "American Graffiti." During the making of that earlier film he designated each reel of film with an R before the reel's number, and each instance of dialog was prefixed with a D. At one point during the sound mixing, the sound designer needed to use Reel 2, Dialog 2, and so asked for "R2D2." Lucas liked the sound of it so much that he used it for the name of a robot character in his later work. * At 6 feet, 4 inches tall, Abraham Lincoln is the tallest president in the history of the United States. * I'd be very surprised if you'd ever heard of Bokassa I, former emperor of the Central African Republic. It's interesting to note, though, that while he was on trial for infanticide, cannibalism and torture, he commented, "Being head of state is an extremely thankless job." * If you suffer from ophidiophobia -- and, sadly, many people do -- you may find the following tidbit to be rather unsettling: There are more than 3,000 different species of snakes.
* It would seem that even powerful dictators can succumb to the pull of Hollywood. Il Duce, Benito Mussolini, was an extra in the film "The Eternal City," and Cuba's longtime dictator, Fidel Castro, had a bit part in a movie called "Holiday in Mexico."
* Researchers have discovered that humans aren't the only ones to imbibe alcohol on a regular basis. It seems that the tiny pen-tailed tree shrew makes a habit of consuming naturally fermented palm flower nectar, which has an alcohol content of 3.8 percent -- comparable to that of most beers.
* Confectioner Milton Hershey suffered through founding two candy companies that ended in failure, then succeeded on his third attempt, and finally sold that company and used the proceeds to found the Hershey Company. After all his hard work, though, he seemed to be less interested in enjoying the fruits of his labors than in helping others.

That's a great start! * If you haven't already, find out if your routine utility services and banking have electronic statements. You can save yourself the trouble of filing and storing all that paper, which you likely won't need. Electronic statements can be saved on a portable drive, accessed anytime and printed out only when necessary. * Moving tip: Put books into suitcases, which often have wheels and good handles, in order to transport them. Books placed in boxes can get unbalanced when they don't fill the box efficiently. It makes them hard to carry and hard to stack, since you risk the corners crushing. But suitcases are easy to carry right to the shelf before unloading. * Finding a bandage to cover a skinned knee or elbow is almost impossible. These can be a large or irregular area

Here's a tip for that: Apply antibacterial ointment generously, then cover the knee or elbow with a regular gauze pad. Then add a "sleeve" cut from a pair of tights. It moves with the joint without bunching up the way an ACE bandage does, and it stays in place. * "After the kids decorated cupcakes one day, I found that the counter and floor were covered with little spilled sprinkles. They were the ball kind, and they were hard to pick up. 'BEET' THE HEAT! It's hot here in Texas, and there's nothing better than a cool, refreshing pitcher of ... beet lemonade?! Yes, that's right, beet lemonade. It's not only delicious, it's also packed with nutrients. While beets aren't typically showcased in summer recipes, they should be. If you're trying to improve your health and beat the heat, give beets a try. Beet greens are the tops, and beet roots, or tap roots, are the bottom of the plant. Beet varieties in North America are known as table beets or garden beets, red beets or golden beets. Beets are a popular ingredient worldwide and are used for food coloring, medicinal purposes and sugar production. Sugar beets are a special type of beet that contains high concentrations of sucrose and are grown commercially. These beets are an important part of the sugar industry, and the United States is a leader in its production. Beets are versatile. They can be juiced, roasted, steamed or pickled. They also can be bought precooked and canned for convenience. When selecting beets, choose ones that are heavy for their size with fresh, unwilted green leafy tops still attached. Beets are packed with essential vitamins, minerals and plant compounds, and have an impressive nutritional profile. They are high in vitamins and minerals, and low in calories. The roots are especially concentrated in folate or vitamin B-9, providing more than five times the amount as the beet leaves. Folate is important because it helps with DNA synthesis and repair. It also encourages cell and tissue growth. Beets also contain a high concentration of nitrates, which have a blood pressure-lowering effect. This may lead to a reduced risk of heart attacks, heart failure and stroke. The dietary nitrates contained in beets are converted into nitric oxide, a molecule that dilates blood vessels, increasing oxygen use and causing blood pressure to drop. This is particularly beneficial for athletes. Dietary nitrates are water soluble, so it is best to avoid boiling beets. The nitrates help increase blood flow to the brain, improve cognitive function and possibly reduce the risk of dementia. However, more research in this area is needed. Beets are a good source of fiber, which aids in digestive health, as well as reducing the risk of several chronic health conditions. Beets also have a high water and low-calorie content, which are beneficial for weight loss.
Depositphotos Try these ways to add more beets to your diet:
1/2 cup sugar or stevia
Beetroot salad -- Grated beets make a flavorful and colorful addition to coleslaw.
6 cups cold water, divided
Beetroot dip -- Blend beets with Greek yogurt to make a delicious and healthy dip. Beetroot juice -- Fresh beetroot juice is best, as storebought juice can be high in added sugars and may only contain a small number of beets. Beetroot leaves -- Cook and enjoy like spinach, add to smoothies and use in pesto. This summer is going to be hot, so make this recipe for Beet Lemonade, and enjoy beets for a cool and refreshing treat!
BEET LEMONADE If you don't have a food processer, you can shred the beets by hand (no need to peel). Finely grate one bunch beets on a surface lined with cheesecloth on top of wax paper. The more finely grated, the more juice you'll get. Gather the grated beets in the cheesecloth, tightly twist the top closed and squeeze the juice into a large liquid measuring cup. It's intense, so blend it with lemon juice as directed below, or with fruit or vegetable juice, like orange or carrot. Transfer the juice to a container and refrigerate up to 3 days.
1. Cover your work surface with wax paper or plastic wrap before you begin peeling the beet. Wear disposable gloves or rub any stains off your skin with a halved lemon. Use a vegetable peeler to remove the beet skin. 2. Attach the shredding blade to a food processor and shred the beet chunks equaling about 1 cup of shredded beets. Scoop shredded beets into a bowl and set aside. 3. Remove food processor bowl from base and rinse out; replace the clean bowl onto the food processor and insert the regular processor blade. Add shredded beets, lemon juice, sugar or stevia and 1 cup of water and process until smooth. 4. Strain the beet mixture through a sieve into a large bowl, pressing with the back of a spoon to extract as much liquid as possible. Transfer liquid into a pitcher and dilute with remaining water. Adjust sugar or water levels to taste. Refrigerate before serving. Makes 8 cups. *** Angela Shelf Medearis is an award-winning children's author, culinary historian and the author of seven cookbooks. KIDS AND CHORES The word was out from the fire marshal in California's Santa Cruz mountains to remove dry brush, firewood and debris close to cabins and homes, to help protect them from possible wildfires.

My summer neighbor, Stephanie Timmerman, and her three granddaughters heeded the call and worked together to move logs from a downed tree near their cabin porch. "When we woke up, we were going to go to play at a nearby park," said 9-year-old Mercedes Lopez. "But we first wanted to help Grandma with the big chore, before she went home to San Francisco." All morning long, they hoisted split wood onto a wagon, and rolled larger loads down the hill to the edge of the property.
Here are my tips as your family approaches a new spring season. Everyone can share in tasks and celebrate the satisfaction of jobs well done.
"Sharing chores is essential to family life," said Stephanie. "The home is a little community, and there are basic things that need to be done to maintain it. I tell my grandkids that we have to cook and eat, so we need clean pots and pans and dishes and silverware to do that. Neatness and order are important, too, as we complete daily chores, including today's task of stacking wood. Plus, we have a good time together getting a job done. Maybe you heard us laughing as we attempted to roll those big logs that take a lot of muscle," she said to me.
Preschoolers: For the under-5's, work and play are essentially the same. Hanging out with you, whether doing kitchen chores, cleaning the house or tackling yard work is fun. Give them tasks in small doses, and cheer them on with praise.
Indeed, I had, which made me think about chores and how they are important to building healthy families.
Don't be too picky. They'll develop standards later. For now, let them be proud to be making a contribution. School age: As they develop skills, emphasize giving them tasks doing things they like to do. Don't just hand off drudgery chores, especially those you don't like. Match their passions with a chore. All the experts on Kim who were dusted off to saturate the news channels have been stored away again. Onward and downward we go.
AMERICA'S POLITICAL AMNESIA Here's a pop quiz: What is the name of North Korea's capital city? If you said "Pyongyang," you probably have an above-average recall. I didn't want to make it too easy. The name Kim Jong Un still should ring a bell, but if the details of his much-ballyhooed meeting with President Donald Trump have faded, don't worry. That was sooooo two weeks ago, and we Americans have the memory span of a gnat. Since that historic Trump-Kim negotiation to defuse the ticking nuclear time bomb, we have moved on. All the glaring images from Singapore (the location of their get-together, in case you've forgotten) have faded to almost
The following week we moved on to another blow-up, as the United States of America performed its best imitation of North Korea, snatching children away from the parents who brought them along as they dared to breach our borders. It's becoming routine for us as we witness one outrage after another. The constant cruelty, buffoonery and outright lying of this administration and its leader, the Trumpster, become symptoms of a chronic national sickness. This, too, will fade into outrage oblivion, along with all the atrocities that have sadly become part of the news loop: The shooting massacres that have resulted in zero action taken to control access to guns and all the outlandish hatefulness, scandals and embarrassments simply will add to our societal malaise. Gone and all but forgotten. Those politicians and commentators who wring their hands and state that this time we've been dragged too far down soon will confront some new low in the country's limbo dance. Their premise that voters will remember and act on their disgust at the polls gives us far too much credit; nobody remembers. Blame a number of factors: There are the constant distraction from not just chaotic social media, which have
Tablets are like oversized cellphones in their capabilities, only better. With tablets you can check mail, watch videos, make a grocery list, share pictures, check the weather, play games and look around the Internet. Some tablets have drawing capabilities with a special pen. If you have Wi-Fi in your house, a tablet can connect to it without incurring additional fees to connect to the phone carrier.
SUMMER ACTIVITIES CLOSE TO HOME After a long winter that kept many of us indoors, summer is finally here. Let's take advantage of it and be out and about! All of these ideas involve the cooperation of others. --Ask at the library about starting a seniors' nostalgia book club in the evening. Read books that you read many years ago and talk about whether your opinions have changed. Find out if the library can show old movies that you haven't seen in years. Consider making these grandparent/grandchild nights. On that same theme, look into craft nights with your grandchildren at the library. Offer to volunteer during the week in exchange, perhaps teaching a small class on one of your skills. --See if a local coffee shop is willing to let a group meet one morning a week. Ask for volunteer speakers from community businesses.
Tablets are portable, easier to tote around. If you want to take your tablet out to lunch and read online news while you eat, assuming the restaurant has Wi-Fi, you can do that. If you have a reading app for books you've downloaded, you don't even need the Wi-Fi. Chances are a tablet won't come with a keyboard, unless you get one fancy enough to attach to a Bluetooth keyboard. Otherwise you'll type right on the screen. You won't need a mouse.
What do you buy after you have your cellphone but you're not ready for a full-size computer? Chances are a tablet would be a good next step.
Still, many wise people counsel that we've gone through downward spirals before, but the nation has always come out of them and thrived once again. This time, the wise people may be wrong, their hopes misplaced. Bob Franken is an Emmy Award-winning reporter who covered Washington for more than 20 years with CNN. How to pick out a tablet: * Try to sample different types in stores, such as Apple iPads and Android, and the various sizes. The 9.7- to 10.1inch display sizes are a good place to start; the 12-inch models can be heavy. * Read the reviews online. You'll care about battery life, weight, price and ease of typing. Don't forget to add in the cost of any extra goodies you want, like the drawing pen if your tablet can use it, and a new case. GENETIC SCREENING MAY BE HELPFUL FOR SOME DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 62-year-old female who weighs 97 pounds and is 4 feet, 10 inches tall. I'm a non-smoker, non-drinker. I'm a mother of three, take no medications and have no medical issues except acid reflux. My brother died of Ewing sarcoma at 6. My 10-year-old sister died of dysgerminoma. Mom was diagnosed with colon cancer at 47 and died at 52. Dad died of pancreatic cancer at 81 after being in remission from prostate cancer for five years. On Mom's side, her sister and aunt also had colon cancer. What screenings do I need? What screenings are needed for my two daughters, ages 41 and 43? My daughters' paternal grandmother died of breast cancer at 72. My other siblings, a 56-year-old brother and 68-year-old sister, are healthy. -- G.T. ANSWER: With so many cancers in your family, I would strongly suggest a visit with a genetic counselor. The combination of colon, pancreatic and prostate cancer suggests a genetic syndrome, such as Lynch syndrome and BRCA 1 or 2, although your history isn't classic for either of these. There are many less-common familial syndromes that increase the risk for various cancers, and we are gradually increasing our knowledge of them. Some of the cancers you mention are not associated with any known syndrome, such as Ewing sarcoma, a primary bone cancer, and dysgerminoma, a rare type of ovarian cancer. It's possible that your family has just been very unfortunate. Still, I would recommend getting more knowledge about any genetic risk you may have. With this information, you can learn the right screening strategies for yourself, as well as obtain information that could potentially be valuable to your siblings and children.

*** DEAR DR. ROACH: At first the doctors thought my wife had myasthenia gravis. After a series of tests, it was determined that she did not have that disease. However, the neurologists now think she has mitochondrial myopathy. Can you tell us a little more about this disease, please? -- R.R. ANSWER: Mitochondrial myopathies are a group of disorders of the mitochondria, which are responsible for the production of energy inside the cell. Almost all cells contain mitochondria, but muscle cells are loaded with them. Since they do so much of the energy consumption, muscles are most affected. These disorders used to be considered rare, but it is now thought that 1 in 10,000 people may have one of these disorders (which makes it uncommon, but not rare). Mitochondria come almost completely from the mother, and as a result, a family history of muscle problems in the maternal line suggests this diagnosis.
ing, EKG (since some can affect heart muscle), EMG (a test of the electrical activity of muscle), muscle biopsy and genetic tests of the mitochondria. Unfortunately, I can't give you any details at all about prognosis or treatment, which require a specific diagnosis. Most of these have no specific treatment, though L-carnitine, coenzyme Q10 and creatine often are tried. Your wife's neurologists will give you more information. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. published in JAMA. Researchers compared height and weight data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys among various demographics, including age, race, sex, and rural and urban locations. Severe obesity rates tripled for rural adults and increased by 29 percent among youth in those areas. Results showed disproportionately high rates for severe obesity among Hispanic and African American youth, increasing their risk for hypertension and other cardiovascular disease risk factors. These results highlight health disparities based on race and urbanization.
DIET INFLUENCES ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE RISK
VEGETARIAN DIETS IMPROVE RISK FACTORS IN DIABETES PATIENTS Vegetarian diets improve glycemic control and other cardiometabolic risk factors in those with type 2 diabetes, according to a review published in Clinical Nutrition. Researchers reviewed nine randomized controlled trials that assessed the effectiveness of vegetarian diets on diabetes treatment. Those who ate a vegetarian diet lowered their cholesterol and blood sugar and lost weight when compared to those who ate a nonvegetarian diet. The authors also observed lower HbA1c levels in the vegetarian groups. Suspected mechanisms behind these improvements include lower saturated fat intake, higher intakes of fiber, and the effects of low-glycemic foods.
Following a “Mediterranean-style diet” rich in fruits, vegetables, legumes, and grains may protect against Alzheimer’s disease risk factors, according to a study published in Neurology. Researchers compared neuropsychological evaluations and diet records for 70 participants between the ages of 30 to 60. Diet records scored adherence to the diet via numeric values for foods associated with protective effects such as legumes, fruits, and vegetables and detrimental foods such as meat and dairy products. Those who consumed more plant-based foods showed fewer Alzheimer’s disease-related biomarker changes on their brain scans when compared to those who did not follow the diet as closely. These results support further investigation of dietary interventions as an effective preventive measure against Alzheimer’s disease. The authors noted that modifiable risk factors, such as diet, account for 1 in every 3 Alzheimer’s disease cases. Subscribe to the Physicians Committee’s Breaking Medical News. WEATHER VANE Tennis started in the 12th century and was played without a racquet. The ball was hit with the hand. It was not until the 16th century that the game was called "tennis" and players used a racquet. By the 1960s, important tennis matches were open to both amateurs and professionals, and winning players got a large sum of money as a prize. But there are many collectibles from early tennis events as well as equipment from the past 100 years. Since about 1870, some steins, vases, plates and even figurines pictured players and other tennis scenes. Old balls and racquets, even appropriate tennis clothing, are wanted. One of the most unusual tennis items sold recently is a pre-1950s tennis-racquet weather vane. It was made of copper and included copper-wire racquet strings. The racquet was attached to a mounting rod with a tennis-ball top. The weather vane sold at a James Julia auction for $1,815. It probably will be installed near a tennis court. *** Q: I have a tiny bisque doll, which is about four inches tall. It has molded hair, painted brown eyes and rope

joints. Marked on the back is "Sarah S. Putnam, Germany." I'd like to know who this is and the age of the doll. It is in perfect condition.
Golf sign, hand-carved wood, The golfers arms, golfer on course, arched top, multicolored paint, 1950s, 40 x 27 inches, $400.
A: Your doll was designed by Grace (not Sarah) S. Putnam. Born in California, Grace Storey Putnam (18771947) was divorced and trying to earn some money when she started designing dolls' heads. In 1922, she copyrighted a wax doll's head designed to look like the head of a 3-day-old infant. Within a couple of years, the doll, called "Bye-Lo Baby," went into production, distributed by George Borgfeldt & Co., a New York importer.
Asparagus set, Majolica, rectangular server with handles, eight round plates, scalloped, molded stalks, leaves, c. 1905, 16 inches and 9 inches, $960.
The first dolls' heads were bisque and made in Germany. Bodies were cloth, made by the K & K Toy Co., a subsidiary of Borgfeldt, which also assembled them. They came in several sizes. Later, heads were composition, wood, vinyl, wax or celluloid, made in Germany or the U.S. Other dolls were all bisque, all composition or a combination. They were sold until 1952. Your doll's value depends on size, condition, age, and head and body type. Your doll was made sometime after 1925 and is worth about $200. *** CURRENT PRICES Compact, silver-tone metal, black, red and white paint, strolling couple, tree, hinged lid, mirror and powder puff, c. 1930, 3 1/2 in diameter, $15. Beverage dispenser, stoneware, pale blue crock with "Iced Tea" stamped in navy blue, brass spout, lid, 1960s, 16 x 11 inches, 4 gallons, $120.
Unique or unusual items sell quickly at shows and auctions. So this weather vane featuring a copper tennis racquet got bids up to the winning $1,815 at an auction in Maine.
Tip: Plastic furniture from the 1950s often scratches. A good polishing with automobile wax might help cover the blemishes. For more collecting news, tips and resources, visit www. Kovels.com (c) 2018 King Features Synd., Inc.
