Fore! Golf season is in full swing! Let’s celebrate with an assortment of facts about this popular sport. • As early as the Roman Empire, sports enthusiasts were playing a primitive form of golf, known as paganica, which used a bent stick to hit a stuffed leather ball. The origins of our more modern game are in Scotland in the 1400s. The game of “gowf” as the Scots called it, was so popular that in 1457, King James II of Scotland banned the sport because men were neglecting archery practice, a necessity for the country’s national defense. In 1502, King James IV rescinded the ban, and actually became a golfer himself.

• Although the Scots have been playing on the Links at St. Andrews throughout the 1400s, it wasn’t until 1552 that it was officially chartered by the Archbishop, giving the people of St. Andrews the right to play there. Up until 1764, the Old Course at St. Andrews had 22 holes. It was re-routed into 18 holes, which became the standard for the game around the world. • Mary Queen of Scots, who ruled Scotland from 1542 to 1567, was an avid golfer who was strongly rebuked by her subjects for playing golf just a few days after her husband was murdered in 1567, failing to properly mourn his death. Turn the page for more! • Mary Queen of Scots is reportedly the one who brought the word “caddy” to the game. She used French cadets to assist her on the course. “Cadet” is the French word for “student,” pronounced “cad-DAY”, giving us our modern term.

GOLF (continued):

Strips of the sap were softened in boiling water, then molded by hand, and placed in cold water to harden. In 1901, the Haskell golf ball made its debut, a rubber-cored ball that traveled farther than the gutta percha ball, with the added benefit of a much cheaper cost to produce. The dimples in today’s golf balls decrease aerodynamic drag, allowing the ball to fly farther. A smooth golf ball would travel about half as far as a dimpled one. A golf ball has between 300 and 500 dimples, each about 0.010 inch (0.03 cm) deep. • What is recognized as the world’s first organized golf club was founded in 1744. Established as the Gentlemen Golfers of Leith, the group would later become known as the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers, a group that was responsible for drawing up the first set of official rules for the game. • Golf came to the U.S. via two Scotsmen, who first demonstrated the game in 1888, and set up a golf club that same year in Yonkers, New York. The U.S. PGA was formed in 1916, with the first PGA tournament held that year. • The world’s oldest golf tournament is The Open Championship, better known as the British Open. It was first played in 1860 at Scotland’s Prestwick Golf Club, and played there until 1870. The Open is always played in Scotland, England, or Northern Ireland. The

GOLF BITS • Lady golfers got into the scene in 1893 when the Ladies’ Golf Union was formed in the UK, and the inaugural British Ladies’ Amateur Golf Championship was held. The U.S. Ladies’ Professional Golfers’ Association was founded in 1950, although Babe Didrikson was already a famous lady golfer by that time, having been the first American to win the British Women’s Amateur title in 1947. Although Didrikson attempted to qualify for the U.S. Open in 1948, her application was rejected because the event was open to men only. She had already won two Olympic gold medals and one silver in track and field and was an All-American basketball player before turning her attention to golf, where she won 10 major LPGA championships. • The first person to play golf on the moon was astronaut Alan Shepard while a member of the Apollo 14 crew. In February, 1971, Shepard took a six-iron and two golf balls aboard the spacecraft with him, and attempted two drives, the second of which went more than 200 yards (183 m).

Open is one of the four major championships in men’s pro golf. The other three – The Masters, The U.S. Open, and PGA Championship – are all played in the United States. All four championships together are called the Grand Slam. • Although the Grand Slam has never been accomplished in a single year, five golfers have won all four during their career. At age 32, Gene Sarazen captured his final Grand Slam tournament in 1935, followed by 40-year-old Ben Hogan in 1953. Gary Player was 29 when he wrapped up the Grand Slam in 1965. Jack Nicklaus has won three Grand Slams, the first at age 26 in 1966. Tiger Woods came close to winning the four tournaments in one year, but finished his first Slam over two years at age 24. Tiger has since won two more Slams, and holds the record as the youngest golfer to complete the feat. • Since its inception in 1934, The Masters has been played at Augusta, Georgia’s National Golf Club, and is the only major tournament that is played at the same course every year. During World War II, the course was closed for three years, and used to raise cattle and turkeys in support of the war effort. • Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida’s Sawgrass Stadium Course is the permanent home of the PGA Tour’s The Players Championship. About 125,000 golf balls are hit into the water every year on the courses’s famous 17th “island” hole. • How well do you know golfing terms? Most folks know that each hole is classified by its par, which means

• If golfers want to play on the world’s highest golf course, they will have to travel to Morococha, Peru, where the Tactu Golf Club sits 14,335 feet (4,369 m) above sea level. To play on the world’s northernmost golf course, a trip to Iceland’s Akureyri Golf Club will be required. Those playing stateside will have $500 in green fees for 18 holes at America’s most expensive public course, Shadow Creek Golf Course in Las Vegas. Massachusetts is home to the world’s longest golf course, a par-77 course measuring 8,325 yards (7,612 m). • The 1900 Paris Olympic Games included the game of golf, with 22 male and female athletes from 4 countries competing in a 36-hole game. It was an Olympic event at the following Olympics in St. Louis in 1904. The sport was absent from the Games for the next 112 years before being revived in 2016 at the Rio de Janeiro games, when 120 golfers from 41 countries participated. • Tiger Woods may have made his first hole-in- one at age six, with another 17 after that, but he’s not the youngest person to shoot one. That honor belongs to Colorado’s

the number of strokes a golfer should require to complete the hole. The minimum par is three – a stroke from the tee and two putts. One stroke under par is called a birdie, while two strokes under par is an eagle. Three strokes under par can be a double eagle or an albatross. The term condor refers to four strokes under par, an almost-impossible score to achieve. Only four condors have been recorded, all of which were a hole-in-one on a par-5 hole. Golfers who go over par might record a bogey (one stroke over), a double bogey (two strokes over), or a triple bogey (three strokes). • American golfer Ab Smith had an excellent shot back in 1899, and he described it as a “bird of a shot,” giving golfers the term “birdie,” one under par. • When a golfer sinks the ball into the cup on the first stroke from the tee, it’s a hole-in- one, also called an ace. The casual golfer’s odds of making a hole in one are about 12,500 to one, but change considerably for a golf pro to 2,500 to 1. Those who hope to make two holes in one during a single round are looking at odds of about 67,000,000 to 1. • Golf shots have various names, depending on how far the ball needs to be moved. The “drive” or “full swing” is the initial shot on a hole when the ball is to be moved a long distance, and typically shot with a long-shafted, large-headed wood club known as a driver. For medium distances, the “approach” or “3/4 swing” is used. Golfers use the “chip” or “half-swing” for relatively short distances near the green. Once the ball reaches the green, the golfer “putts” the ball into the hole.

Coby Orr, who, in 1975, at age five, shot a hole-in-one in Littleton, Colorado. • Legendary golfer Jack Nicklaus had his first PGA Tour winnings, $33.33, at the 1962 L.A. Open. Later that year, he was the winner of the U.S. Open, receiving $17,500. He finished the year with more than $60,000 in prize money. In 1963, at age 22, he became the then-youngest golfer to win the Masters. He won again in 1965 and 1966, becoming the tournament’s first back-to-back winner. In 1986, at age 46, Nicklaus was the oldest player to win The Masters. His final round of pro golf was the 2005 British Open, played at the St. Andrews course. • Slugger Hank Aaron may have had 3,771 hits over the course of his baseball career, but had this to say about golf: “It took me 17 years to get 3,000 hits. I did it in one afternoon on the golf course.” • America’s first 18-hole golf course was on an Illinois sheep farm, established in 1892. The nation’s first golf club opened there in Downers Grove, Illinois, the following year. The golf course is still there at the original site.

HOLLYWOOD -- Scarlett Johansson received so much backlash for her decision to play transgender massage-parlor owner Dante "Tex" Gill in the mob thriller "Rub and Tug" that she has withdrawn from the project. Scarlett is no stranger to controversy, after playing a white-washed Asian character in "Ghost in the Shell" (2017), which didn't do well at the box office. Ironically, it would've been for the same director of "Ghost in the Shell," Rupert Sanders. Jeff Goldblum John Krasinski, fresh off his success producing, directing and starring in "A Quiet Place," will co-produce (and probably direct and star) with Matt Damon in "The King of Oil," based on the bestselling book "The King of Oil: The Secret Life of Mark Rich." Rich was pardoned by President Bill Clinton on Clinton's final day in office. Rich died in 2013 at 78. *** "Sopranos" fans rejoice! The prequel has found a director in Alan Taylor, who helmed multiple episodes of the original series as well as "Game of Thrones," "Thor: The Dark World" and "Terminator: Genisys."

"It: Chapter Two" is in the works with Bill Hader playing the grown-up Richie Tozier (played by Finn Wolfhard) and James MacAvoy (as a grown-up Bill Denbrough (played by Jaeden Lieberher). Bill Skarsgard returns as "It." Tim Allen's series "Last Man Standing (which he produced and starred in) ran for six seasons on ABC. Now it's returning, but to Fox, not ABC. Coincidentally, 20th Century Fox produces the show. However, they've lost two cast members: Molly Ephraim, who played middle daughter Mandy, and Flynn Morrison, who played grandson Boyd. When the show was canceled, they were released from their contracts and opted not to return. Their roles will be recast.

*** Jeff Goldblum is having no trouble finding film roles at age 65. In 2017 he appeared in "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" and "Thor: Ragnarok," and in 2018 was busy with a plum voice role in Wes Anderson's animated film "Isle of Dogs," with Bryan Cranston, Edward Norton and Bill Murray. He also has starring roles in "Hotel Artemis," with Jodie Foster, Sterling K. Brown and Zachary Quinto, who plays Spock in the new "Star Trek" movies. Jeff played opposite the original Mr. Spock, Leonard Nimoy, in "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" (1978). He currently can be seen in the $1 billion wonder "Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom." Goldblum was Oscar nominated in 1996 for "Little Surprises," a short live action film he directed, with Julie Harris and Rod Steiger. He's been married three times, once to Oscar-winner Geena Davis (1987-1990), but it's his current marriage to Emilie Livingston that has produced a son (in 2015 at 62) and a daughter (at 64). Fatherhood at 62 is pure Gold(blum). (c) 2018 King Features Synd., Inc.

Q: Can you tell me what's going on with my favorite show, "Unreal"? I heard it has just one more season left. -- Greta Y., via email A: Everyone's favorite reality-dating-show drama is back -already! While season three just finished its run on Lifetime at the end of April, the show's fourth and final season is now streaming in its entirety on Hulu. In a move that took a lot fans by surprise, the show moved to Hulu and is streaming every episode of every season as I type this, including the eight brand-new episodes of its last season. While fans had held out hope that Hulu might renew the series for additional seasons, the streaming giant confirmed in mid-July that this would be curtains for "Unreal," and "Everlasting" -- the dating show within the drama -- with a true-to-the-show wrap-up that is sure to bring out the crazy that we all know and love.

Season four of "Unreal" follows Rachel (Shiri Appleby) and Quinn (Constance Zimmer) as they return to the set of "Everlasting" for an All Stars-themed season. With former contestants and a new format, this season is poised to be even more dramatic than ever. Co-creator Sarah Gertrude Shapiro and showrunner Stacy Rukeyser both returned for season four, and new cast members include Fran ois Arnaud, Natalie Hall, Meagan Holder and Alejandro Munoz. Constance Zimmer returns as director for one episode, and Shiri Appleby directs two episodes, including the series finale. and Michaela Watkins has one more season up its sleeve. And breaking from Hulu's normal tradition of airing one episode a week, all eight episodes of season four will drop on July 31 for your bingeing pleasure. To recap where we left off last season: Alex (played by Tommy) found out his roommate, Rae, is pregnant with his baby after their drunken one-night stand. And Val (Michaela) discovered that her daughter, Laura (Tara Lynne Barr), had decided to move to Sacramento to live with her grandmother, played by the fabulous Frances Conroy in an always wonderful and always uncomfortable recurring guest role. *** READERS: I am thrilled to report that it's finally official: "Downton Abbey" is definitely heading to the big screen for a feature film! After reporting on the rumors, stirrings and speculations for what seems like years, it's finally coming to fruition. The film will be written by series creator Julian Fellowes, and as of this writing, Hugh Bonneville, Michelle Dockery, Dame Maggie Smith, Elizabeth McGovern, Laura Carmichael, Joanne Froggatt and many more familiar faces are set to return. Production begins later this summer. Write to Cindy at King Features Weekly Service, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803; or e-mail her at letters@ cindyelavsky.com. The knubby things could not hurt the cats, but they certainly didn't feel good. -- Bob R., via email DEAR BOB: Thank you for the suggestion! Readers, if you try this solution, be sure to use rug runners with nylon or softer plastic nubs. Essentially, discouraging cats from jumping onto surfaces where you dont want them requires you to put something on those surfaces that they dont like, but which wont hurt them. An unfamiliar texture will keep them from hanging around on those surfaces.

SUMMER SURVIVAL: PET EDITION DEAR PAW'S CORNER: I deliver packages on a long route around town every day. It seems that we've been inundated with warnings over the past few years about the dangers of leaving pets inside the car on a hot day while their owners go shopping or run errands. And yet, almost every day of the summer, I am calling emergency services or asking store managers to page customers because I see pets panting behind rolled-up car windows. Please, please remind pet owners to leave their pets at home when they're running errands! -- Concerned Delivery Driver DEAR DRIVER: I absolutely agree, and I thank you for insisting on this reminder! Even on a day that doesn't seem too hot -- say, 78 degrees F -- the interior of a car can heat to well over 110 degrees within ďŹ ve minutes. Now that we're in the hottest part of the year, that interior temperature climbs faster and higher and can reach 120 degrees easily. No pet can withstand such suffocating heat for long. For short trips to the store or to run errands, leave your pet at home. If they must come with you (such as during long road trips), they should be left with an adult, and the air conditioning needs to be turned on. Of course, a planned outing with your dog is a lot of fun just about any time. But always be mindful of the heat. Bring water for your dog to drink. Head home if your dog is panting heavily and not very active. And do not leave your pet in the car.

MORE WAYS TO FOIL HIGH-FLYING FELINES DEAR PAW'S CORNER: I read with interest the recent column where a reader put aluminum pie plates on surfaces, like the stove, where cats werent allowed. That sounds like a good solution to stopping cats from jumping onto the countertops. Our cats, when they were young, would jump 5 feet straight up to the tops of kitchen cabinets. Needless to say, this was annoying and more than a little concerning. My wife got some plastic rug runners that had knubby things on the bottom to keep the runners from moving on a carpet. She cut pieces and laid them on top of

SOUP IN THE SUMMER?! When I think of summer recipes, I seldom think of soup. However, a well-balanced soup is the perfect way to highlight all the sweet, crisp flavors of freshly picked summer corn. Soups are a perfect dish in the winter, but they're easily a seasonal recipe with the right ingredients. Using both the corn kernels and the corn cob in a soup is a great way to quickly and deeply infuse the broth with flavor, creating a spoonful of summer with each bite.

844-870-5314

* Look for corn with good green husk color, silk ends that are free from decay or worm injury, and stem ends that are not too discolored or dried. Select ears that are well-covered with plump, not too mature kernels. Avoid ears with undeveloped kernels, ears with very large kernels and dark yellow kernels because they can be tough and not very sweet.

2 tablespoons snipped fresh cilantro

* Husk one side of the corn. Press a fingernail into one of the kernels to test the liquid. Ripe corn should have a milky-looking liquid; overripe corn will have either a clear liquid or none at all.

1/4 teaspoon coarsely ground black pepper

* It is important to pick corn and process it within 2-3 hours. The sugar in corn is quickly lost, so for optimum quality process it as soon after picking as possible. If you can't cook fresh corn immediately, store it in the refrigerator.

1. Using a sharp knife, cut the corn kernels off the cobs (should have about 4 cups). Set aside 3/4 cup of the corn for the guacamole. Set aside three of the corn cobs; discard remaining cobs.

This recipe for Sweet Corn Soup with Spicy Guacamole is the perfect showcase for fresh corn and summer vegetables. Soup in the summertime? Yes, please!

2. In a large skillet heat 1 tablespoon olive oil over medium heat. Add 2 tablespoons green onions, half the chopped serrano, half the chopped fire-roasted pepper and half of the garlic. Cook and stir for 4 to 5 minutes or until vegetables are tender. Remove from skillet and set aside.

SWEET CORN SOUP WITH

1/2 teaspoon coarse salt

1 large avocado, halved, seeded, peeled, and coarsely chopped

3. Add 1 1/2 cups of the broth and reserved corn cobs to the skillet. Bring to boiling; reduce heat. Cover and simmer for 5 minutes. Using tongs, remove corn cobs and discard; reserve broth in skillet.

8 ears fresh sweet corn

2 chopped green onions, white and green parts, roots discarded,

4. Add the 3 1/4 cups corn kernels to broth in the skillet. Bring to boil; reduce heat. Cover and simmer 4 to 5 minutes or until corn is tender. Cool slightly.

1/2 fresh, small serrano pepper, chopped 5. In a blender or food processor, combine cooked corn and pepper mixture. If using a blender, remove the center cap and cover the lid with a dish towel. Blend or process until almost smooth.

2 jarred fire-roasted red peppers, chopped 2 cloves garlic, minced 3 1/2 cups reduced-sodium vegetable broth

Here are some tips from the Utah State Extension Service for selecting and storing fresh corn:

2 tablespoons lime juice

SPICY GUACAMOLE

2 tablespoons olive oil Corn on the cob is an essential part of a summer meal and provides many health benefits year-around. The average serving of corn on the cob has about a quarter of your daily requirement for thiamin, which helps maintain memory, as well as beta-cryptoxanthin, which aids in lung health. Corn is high in folic acid, which is needed by women who are taking oral contraceptives. It also is a good source of fiber and thiamine, and contains fair amounts of vitamin C, magnesium, niacin and potassium. One serving or one ear of corn has about 83 calories.

1 teaspoon minced lime peel

6. Return pureed mixture to the skillet. Slowly whisk in enough remaining broth to reach desired consistency; heat through. Keep soup warm while preparing guacamole.

1/2 medium tomato, diced

7. For guacamole, in a large skillet, heat remaining 1 tablespoon oil over medium-high heat. Add the 3/4 cup reserved corn kernels. Cook 8 to 10 minutes or until kernels are tender and lightly browned, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat and cool slightly. 8. In a medium bowl combine toasted corn, the remaining garlic, green onion and peppers, the tomato, cilantro, lime peel, lime juice, salt and black pepper. Add the avocado. Lightly toss to combine. Ladle soup into bowls. Top with guacamole. *** Angela Shelf Medearis is an award-winning children's author, culinary historian and the author of seven cookbooks. MAKE THIS SUMMER THE CRAFTIEST EVER

3. Pick it up, squeeze it, and play. NOTE: If it gets on clothing, wash out quickly with soap and water.

Summertime invites all ages to experience a big dose of creativity, because you can enjoy so many artful, and sometimes messy, activities outdoors. If you have a block party coming up in your neighborhood, a family reunion or a birthday party, here are classic ideas with clever twists to engage kids' imaginations and show off their creative side.

SALAD SPINNER ART

Small paintbrush Small recycled yogurt-style container for each color

The basics? A long portable table covered with newspaper and the supplies to draw everyone in.

FACE PAINTING Set out hand mirrors for "selfie" face painting using watercolor pencils dipped in water or use this face-paint recipe. Hold a mirror in one hand while drawing with the other. Kids and adults also will have fun painting one another's faces.

1. Stir together cornstarch and cold cream in a container until blended. Add water and stir. Add coloring, one drop at a time, until you get desired color. 2. Paint on faces with a small paintbrush or use a cotton swab.

GOOEY GOOP

Face Paint Recipe:

Kids enjoy just about anything that's gooey, slithery and slimy. Here's a crowd-pleasing concoction.

1 teaspoon cornstarch

8-ounce bottle of white household glue, such as Elmer's

1/2 teaspoon water

8 ounces water

1/2 teaspoon cold cream

Liquid poster paint (optional)

Liquid food coloring in a variety of colors

Small and large mixing bowls

1. Remove the lid of an old salad spinner that you use for crafts and set a round paper plate in the middle. Fix it to the nodule at the center of the bottom of the spinner with a piece of clay. 2. Pick three liquid poster paints and drop puddles near the center of the plate. 3. Pop the top of the spinner back on and give the crank a whirl for 5-8 seconds. Let it wind down and remove the top. See the explosion of color spread in all directions. If you wish, add more paint and a pinch of glitter, and spin again. 4. Remove plate, let it dry, and display spin art when you get back home. *** Donna Erickson's award-winning series "Donna's Day" is airing on public television nationwide. Isn't diversity great? But are those universities so inherently superior, particularly when you consider the fact that Trump graduated from one (Penn), and George W. Bush got his degree from Yale? Maybe sometimes it just doesn't take. But is it that or is it that the Ivies are overrated, or that some of the others are underrated?

THE LAW'S COUNTRY CLUB Is it possible that only Ivy League law schools produce attorneys who have what it takes to climb to the top of this country's jurisprudence heap? This heap's pinnacle, of course, is the U.S. Supreme Court. Apparently, we have evolved to a nation where the SCOTUS ivory tower is exclusively the Ivy tower. Even President Donald Trump. the rabble rouser in chief, is said to have factored in Brett Kavanaugh's Yale pedigree when he chose him for another new haven. Assuming the Senate complies, he will cluster with the Supremes: five Harvard, three other Yalies and one (Ginsburg) who

Even if you set aside Stanford, which many describe as just a West Coast Ivy, with Sandra Day O'Connor and William Rehnquist as alums, what about the University of Michigan or Virginia, not to mention Georgetown? They are among many with sterling programs. Those programs graduate scads of brilliant lawyers. But they're still not regarded as the super-elites. Maybe that's Ivy League self-serving PR. Maybe the critics are correct when they charge that the most important courses at any of them include Hubris, Entitlement and, most important of all, Networking. Look no further than the Supremes. I remember sitting in a green room with a former news type who had escaped the frenetic riffraff world of reporting, and now was enjoying the leisurely, elegant life as an academic at Princeton. What classes he taught obviously had to do with journalism. Making small talk, I insincerely commented that he must enjoy the stim-

Some of us have a whole house of belongings to consider. Some of us have not only our stuff, but much that belonged to our parents because we didn't deal with their belongings -- we simply moved it all into our house. Here are some ideas to get you started: * Even if you're not ready to move, clearing out the extras and organizing the rest will make it easier when the time does come. * If you have antiques, get an appraiser to come in and give you an estimate of their value.

CHERISHED MEMORIES BOUND TOGETHER I know what my project is going to be when it's too hot to go out this summer: I'm going to complete a Bio Binder Cherished Memories book. The purpose of the 100-page Cherished Memories book is to leave for your family a record of all your memories. Better than that, however, is having the opportunity to think back over your own life, what your dreams were, how you got to where you are today, what you hope for your family, and more. To see what the binder looks like, go to Amazon and search for "Cherished Memories." You'll see the option of using a Kindle version or the 3-ring binder. Click on Look Inside and scroll down the sample pages. It starts with an Introduction to show you how to use the book. Section 3 is about birth to age 12, where you write information about your childhood experiences and memories, what you did for fun, and school. By Section 6, it gets into your personal values and the philosophies you want to pass on to others. Section 7 is My Favorites, and it's my own personal favorite section. It gives a place to document favorite animals (maybe the pets you had as a child), books, television shows, foods and more. There's also the option to add newspaper clippings, photos, letters and your family tree. You don't have to start at the beginning -- pick your favorite section and begin there. Another way to approach this would be to create one of the binders with your parent. Just asking the questions themselves will open up lots of great discussions, especially if you include your own children in the project. You can go directly to the seller at biobinders.com/bb_ purchase.htm to read more about the binder.

CLEARING OUT HOUSE For most of us, the time eventually comes to move out of our homes into a smaller, more manageable place.

Put in your ZIP code to see who's in your area. * Consider selling your things online, with help. Check out www.ebth.com (aka Everything But the House) and read the

"Not really," he snapped, "Most of these kids just got into Princeton because they did what they're told." He meant that they grew up excelling at sucking up to all their teachers; not making waves, and getting high grades as a result. Either that or they were admitted because the parents were willing to make a huge contribution to the already heavily endowed institution of higher learning. What can get lost in all this is the common touch and common sense. When it is automatically assumed that brilliance can shine only overhead, we fail to illuminate the worthy experience of those who labor below. Life at the top is insular. What we have created in this nation is a nearly impenetrable caste system. At the Supreme Court, society's rules are ultimately interpreted by justices who were indoctrinated by their education to protect the advantages of the ruling class. Yes, a number of them are progressive, a dwindling number. But their Ivy League advantage is really the disadvantage of intellectual inbreeding. How It Works section. They do nearly everything required to get your belongings sold, putting cash in your pocket. * Ask your children, if you have any, which of your belongings they'd like to have. Be prepared for them to decline your offer. So many in the younger generations are themselves living in very small spaces, with no room for extra belongings. * Whether you're preparing to move, or you're a child who has been tasked with closing down the house, check this book on Amazon.com: "Downsizing the Family Home: What to Save, What to Let Go," by columnist Marni Jameson. Read the lengthy introduction in the See Inside link. By paring down your belongings now, you'll be a step ahead should you ever need to move in a hurry. It's not too early to start. KNOW THE ABCDE'S OF MELANOMA DEAR DR. ROACH: In 1976, I had a mole on my right calf about the size of a pencil eraser. A biopsy showed it to be melanoma, and they thought they had removed all of the cancer, but they did another surgery to be sure that I was cancer-free. I am a natural redhead and never sunbathed or used a tanning bed. It has been 38 years, and I am still cancer-free. I get a skin check from my dermatologist every six months. At the time of my diagnosis, my family doctor said that if the melanoma spreads inside the body, "the ball game is over." Is that still true? I know melanoma can be deadly. -- W.K. ANSWER: Melanoma is the most commonly lethal skin cancer. Although there have been some exciting new developments in treating advanced melanoma, the survival rate for stage IV melanoma, where the cancer has spread to internal organs, is only 15 percent to 20 percent at five years. Fortunately, the survival rate for melanoma caught early, at stage I, is greater than 90 percent, which is why it's so important to know the ABCDE's of melanoma recognition: A: Asymmetry -- one half looks different from the other half; B: Border -- the border in a melanoma is often irregular, not a near-circle; C: Color -- melanomas usually are not a uniform color, like most benign lesions. Some areas are light brown, others brown-black, others red or pale; D: Diameter -- greater than 6 millimeters, the eraser on a standard pencil; E: Enlargement or Evolution -- any change in color, shape, size or symptoms (including bleeding).

Any of these should prompt a visit to your regular doctor or a dermatologist. As an internist, these are the features I look for, and I have a very low threshold for sending suspicious lesions to my colleagues in dermatology. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am wondering how safe "energy drinks" really are. My daughter is a recovering alcoholic, sober for three plus years, but she has at least five of these drinks a day. Can they be good for her, or are they another addiction? -- N.N. ANSWER: I've recommended against energy drinks in previous columns due to the whopping amount of sugar they contain. However, I am going add another reason: Using this large a number of energy drinks constitutes a potentially dangerous caffeine intake. There has been at least one related death -- a young man consumed seven or eight energy drinks and suffered a heart attack.

The authors developed an index that scored plant-based and animal-based foods differently to quantify adherence to a vegetarian diet. This allowed for comparisons between plant-based diets of differing nutritional quality. A diet containing more healthful plant-based foods, including fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, lowered risk of death more than diets with less healthful foods such as sugar-sweetened beverages, sweets, or animal products. Those who followed more plant-based diets consumed more fiber, vitamin C, and folate and less cholesterol, sodium, and saturated fat.

FIBER INTAKE REDUCES RISK FOR DEPRESSIVE SYMPTOMS High fiber intake may reduce the risk for symptoms from depression, according to a study published in Nutrition. Researchers reviewed data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey and compared diet records with depression questionnaire results. Those who consumed 21 grams of fiber per day from fruits, vegetables, and all sources were less likely to exhibit depressive symptoms, compared with those who consumed less fiber. A possible mechanism is fiber’s ability to alter the gut microbiota to reduce inflammation and oxidative stress. The authors call for initiatives to increase consumption of high-fiber foods among adults to prevent depression, as the average daily intakes of fiber are far less than the recommended amounts.

This obviously is a rare event, and caffeine is generally safe at reasonable doses, but "at least" five a day is way too much caffeine. Depending on the brand, five cans would contain perhaps 800 mg of caffeine (about a half-gallon of brewed coffee), and 270 grams of sugar (over a third of your entire day's recommended calories and over a week's worth of sugar). I can't comment on "addiction," but I certainly would strongly recommend that your daughter reduce her consumption. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. OMEGA-3 SUPPLEMENTS DO NOT PROTECT AGAINST HEART DISEASE Omega-3 supplements do not protect against heart disease and other chronic conditions, according to a review published in Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews. Researchers reviewed 79 studies that compared consumption of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), and alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) with cardiovascular health. Long-chain fatty acids from fish oil supplements did not protect against all-cause mortality and did not reduce the risk for cardiovascular events. Results showed increased consumption of ALAs from plant-foods provided a protective effect against coronary heart disease, arrhythmia, and other cardiovascular events. The authors note that previous recommendations for fish oil supplementation derived from biased research. Subscribe to the Physicians Committee’s Breaking Medical News. *** Q: My Rookwood mug is old, dated 1884. It is covered with line drawings of what look like comic book figures. The name Cranch is in block letters, and the usual Rookwood marks also are on the bottom. It is yellowish-white with black lines. Who is Cranch?

CHINESE PORCELAIN Chinese porcelains are among the hardest for an average collector to identify and date. They have been made for centuries, and it is considered a tribute -- not an attempt to fool a customer -- to copy a piece perfectly, including the original mark. Unfortunately, today there also are some who deliberately make and sell excellent copies of antiques. The pictured vase is named "Five Boys." It is a piece of "famille rose" porcelain and has a six-character mark on the bottom. The boys are climbing or standing on the vase. One has a ruyi scepter; the others are helping each other to the top. The famille rose decoration could be several hundred years old or new. The color and clever three-dimensional figures helped the vase sell for $1,476, its decorative value. If it were 300 years old, it would sell for much more.

A: E.P. Cranch was a lawyer in Cincinnati who also was working for the Rookwood pottery from its beginning, as well as a poet, a storyteller and an artist. Cranch used the words and often humorous pictures of activities described in ballads and folklore. He remembered a ballad sung to him by Noah Webster's nephew 50 years earlier and wrote it down and illustrated it. Cranch seems best-known for his Rookwood pieces decorated with the Uncle Remus stories. His art appears on beer mugs, pitchers, jugs, plates, bottles and vases, most made in the 1880s. Although they are very different in style than most early Rookwood, with colored glazes and realistic decorations of flowers or perhaps Indian portraits, Cranch's work sells quickly. A 6 3/4-inch-high Cranch jug sold recently for $1,610. It was decorated with scenes and the words of the poem "Three Wise Men of Gotham Went to Sea in a Bowl." *** CURRENT PRICES Toy bubble pipe, figural bowl, "Popeye" head, smoking a pipe, sailor hat, curved stem, white plastic and paint, 1950, 6 inches, $20. Advertising sack, "American Lady Self-Rising Flour," Amelia Earhart profile, mat and frame, c. 1935, 24 x 17 inches, $165. Cigar humidor, mahogany, doghouse shape, roof lifts open, brass hinges, 20 compartment cigar storage, bun feet, 1800s, 8 x 10 inches, $280.

An examination of the bottom of the vase may show some clues to the age. Many modern copies of old vases have glazed, rather than unglazed, foot rims. This modern vase is worth almost $1,500 just because it is so attractive and clever.

Gossip bench, mahogany, upholstered, sleigh-back chair with telephone table, carved lyre design, splay legs, c. 1945, 32 x 37 inches, $520. TIP: You can wash an iron pot by hand with dish detergent. When iron pans were first used, soap was made with lye and it washed the seasoning off the pan. Re-season with a few drops of vegetable oil, then wipe again.
