• In the Oxford English Dictionary, a mountain is defined as “a natural elevation of the earth surface rising more or less abruptly from the surrounding level and attaining an altitude which, relatively to the adjacent elevation, is impressive or notable.” • There are five basic kinds of mountains: fold mountains (folded mountains), fault-block mountains (block mountains), dome mountains, volcanic mountains and plateau mountains. Geologists believe mountains make up about one-fifth of the world’s landscape. • The absolute heights of mountains and hills vary greatly according to an area’s terrain. Major mountains occur in long linear arcs, indicating tectonic plate boundaries and activity. Two types of mountains are formed depending on how the rock reacts to the tectonic forces – block or fold mountains. • The Appalachian Mountains are the oldest mountain chain in North America. They extend from Newfoundland to Alabama. turn the page for more!

MOUNTAINS (continued): • The Appalachian Mountains are made up of mountains, ridges and valleys. The Great Smoky Mountains are in this region, and they run from Tennessee to North Carolina. • The Blue Ridge Mountains are the backbone of the Appalachian Mountain system. They extend from Georgia to Pennsylvania. • Mt. Mitchell, in the Appalachians, is the highest mountain on the eastern coast. It is about 6,684 feet high (2,037 meters). • The Andes Mountain range is an uninterrupted chain of highland that is situated along the western coast of South America. It is the longest exposed mountain range in the world and comprises two great ranges: Cordillera Oriental and Cordillera Occidental, which stand divided by a deep intermediate depression. • The Himalayas stretch across six countries: Afghanistan, Bhutan, the People’s Republic of China, India, Nepal and Pakistan. Some of the world’s major rivers, the Indus, the Ganges, the Brahmaputra and the Yangtze, rise in the Himalayas, and their combined drainage basin is home to some 1.3 billion people, including the people of Bangladesh. • The world’s highest peak on land is Mt. Everest in the Himalayas. It is 29,036 feet (8,848 meters) tall. When measured from sea-level, Mount Everest is without a doubt the biggest mountain peak on this planet. However, if one were to consider the height of a mountain from its base to its peak, there are few other mountains such as Mt. McKinley and Mauna Kea that are taller than Everest in totality.

• Prior to being named Mount Everest, the mountain was commonly referred to as Peak XV. It was formally named Mount Everest after Col. George Everest who was the Surveyor General of India in the early 1860s. • Mount Everest also has some local names such as Sagarmatha (Nepali) and Chomolungma (Tibetan). • The first people to scale Mount Everest were Sir Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay. They did it on May 29, 1953.

• The Continental Divide, located in the Rocky Mountains, separates waters flowing into the Atlantic Ocean or Gulf of Mexico from those flowing into the Pacific Ocean. • The Rocky Mountains include at least 100 separate ranges, which are generally divided into four broad groupings: the Canadian Rockies and Northern Rockies of Montana and northeastern Idaho; the Middle Rockies of Wyoming, Utah and southeastern Idaho; the Southern Rockies, mainly in Colorado and New Mexico; and the Colorado Plateau in the four corners region. • The Canadian Rockies are quite different in appearance and geology from the American Rockies to the south of them. The Canadian Rockies are composed of layered sedimentary rock such as limestone and shale. The American Rockies are made of metamorphic and igneous rock, such as granite. • Alberta, Canada, is named after Princess Louisa Caroline Alberta, the fourth child of Queen Victoria. The Princess was born in 1848, and married the Governor General of Canada. The princess is also the namesake of Lake Louise in the Rocky Mountains.

Music Legend:

Jimi Hendrix James Marshall “Jimi” Hendrix was born Johnny Allen Hendrix on November 27, 1942 and died on September 18, 1970. This American guitarist, singer and songwriter is often considered to be the greatest electric guitarist in the history of rock music and one of the most important and influential musicians of his era across a range of genres. • The first formal band Hendrix played in was The Velvetones, who performed regularly at the Yesler Terrace Neighborhood House in Seattle. He played without pay. His flashy style and left-handed playing of a right-handed guitar made him a standout.

• Jimi recorded “Hey Joe” as his first single with the Jimi Hendrix Experience, followed by “Stone Free,” “Purple Haze” and “The Wind Cries Mary.” (The last three are all Hendrix compositions.) • In March 1967, Hendrix set his guitar on fire on stage at the end of his act as part of a tour by The Walker Brothers. • In May 1967, the group released their first album, “Are You Experienced,” which reached No. 2 in England behind The Beatles’ “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.” • Although very popular internationally at this time, the Experience had yet to crack America. Their first single there failed to sell. Hendrix’s big chance came when Paul McCartney recommended the group to the organizers of the Monterey International Pop Festival. • Hendrix’s Monterey Pop Festival performance was filmed by D. A. Pennebaker and later shown in some movie theaters around the country in early 1969. The movie immortalized Hendrix’s burning and smashing of his guitar at the finale of his performance.

• Early in his career, Hendrix joined the very popular Isley Brothers band and went on tour, where he was eventually hired as part of Little Richard’s backup band. • The Rolling Stones’ manager Andrew Loog Oldham and later, producer Seymour Stein, both passed on managing Hendrix. They didn’t like his music. • Hendrix then met Chas Chandler, who was ending his tenure as bassist in The Animals rock band and was looking for talent to manage. Chandler was enamored with the song “Hey Joe” and was convinced he could create a hit single with the right artist. He liked how Hendrix played the song. • Producer-manager Chandler helped Hendrix move to London, where he joined with English bass player Noel Redding and drummer Mitch Mitchell to form his new group, The Jimi Hendrix Experience.

• The last Experience concert took place on June 29, 1969, at Barry Fey’s Denver Pop Festival, a threeday event held at Denver’s Mile High Stadium that was marked by police firing tear gas into the audience as they played “Voodoo Child (Slight Return).” The band escaped from the venue in the back of a rental truck that was partly crushed by fans trying to escape the tear gas. The next day, Noel Redding quit the Experience. • Hendrix died in London under somewhat mysterious circumstances on September 18, 1970.

(954) 454-8000 Hanukkah Hanukkah is celebrated around the world for eight days and nights. As in many other celebrations of many other cultures, it’s about family gathering together and sharing food, bless-ings and good times. • It’s a celebration of restored freedom. Hanukkah celebrates the victory of the Maccabees or Israelites over the Greek-Syrian ruler Antiochus about 2,200 years ago. • The holiday starts on the 25th of the month of Kislev. But because the Hebrew calendar is lunar rather than solar, it can fall anywhere from November to December on the standard calendar. • Though Jews around the world commemorate Hanukkah, in Israel, Hanukkah is particularly festive. After all, to celebrate Hanukkah in Israel is to celebrate it where the story of the Maccabees took place. It’s a national holiday; schools are closed, menorahs are publicly displayed, and parties abound. • One of the most recognized symbols of Hanukkah, the chanukkiah is a special nine-branched candelabrum. It is different from the standard menorah, which holds seven candles and is the emblem of the State of Israel. • The chanukkiah or hanukkiyah symbolizes the time when the Maccabees wanted to rededicate their temple by lighting the “eternal flame,” but they only had enough consecrated oil to burn for one day. Miraculously, that little bit of oil lasted for eight days until more purified oil could be found. • Today, Jewish families light candles or burn oil in the chanukkiah for the eight days of Hanukkah, adding one candle each day. The ninth candle, the center one, is used to light the others. • Each night of Hanukkah, an additional candle is placed in the chanukkiah from right to left, and then lit from left to right. On the last night, all the candles are lit. • A dreidel, or sivion, is a four-sided top that has a Hebrew letter on each side. Spinning the dreidel is a popular Hanukkah custom. • During Hanukkah, families eat latkes (potato pancakes) and sufganiot (jelly donuts) or other foods that are fried in oil to celebrate and commemorate the miracle of purified oil. • Hanukkah gelt, or money, is often distributed to children to enhance their enjoyment of the holiday. The amount is usually in small coins, although grandparents or other relatives may give larger sums as an official Hanukkah gift. • Unlike most spelling words you remember from school, Hanukkah can be correctly spelled many different ways, including Chanukah, Chanukkah and Hanukkah. • In North America especially, Hanukkah gained increased importance with many Jewish families in the latter half of the twentieth century, including large numbers of secular Jews who wanted a Jewish alternative to Christmas. • Some Jews in North America and Israel now celebrate the environment along with Hanukkah, using the holiday’s “miracle of the oil” to reflect upon energy conservation.

Think Twice Before Adopting a Pet DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Thank you for printing Dori’s view on pet adoption in your column. I have been in the animal rescue business for many years and have 10 “unadoptables” (now quite senior and living the life of Riley). Dori is so right, and I applaud her for her ability to state her position so clearly. I hope many of your readers got it. I have the results of poor choices -- lucky for me because they are so dear, but they had to go through so much, which is very sad. -- Pam Y., Lewiston, Calif. DEAR PAM: Pam, thank you for the update and for taking in the “unadoptables” -- pets that, in many cases, have behavioral or health issues that their former owners couldn’t deal with. People who are interested in purchasing or adopting a pet must do their homework before making the leap, especially if they have no prior experience. It’s not enough just to read up on the breed of dog or cat you’re interested in, their traits and behavior (although this also is a must). You have to take into account the impact on your lifestyle and your bank account. Pet care costs money, so you must be prepared for routine veterinary examinations -- typically annual -- and regular vaccinations, at least one of which, rabies, is required by law in most cities and states. And you must have the ability to pay for unexpected illnesses. Caring for a pet takes time. A pet becomes part of the family -- so much so that pets who are abandoned often suffer irreversible emotional damage. Are you ready to take your dog out at 6 a.m., potty train him and spend an hour each day teaching or reinforcing basic obedience skills? Can you handle a cat that yowls late at night, or has soiling issues outside the litter box? You may not know how to handle everything that comes up, but you must be prepared before getting a pet to take time out and learn to really care for that pet. Looking for more pet advice and information? Check out pawscorner. com online! Send your pet questions to ask@pawscorner.com, or write to Paw’s Corner, c/o King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.

Holiday office parties offer a chance to meet people, mingle and make small talk. They also can be an opportunity to advance your career. Handled badly though, they could potentially torpedo it, too. Here are some tips to put your best foot forward: Making Small Talk 1. Reach out to someone. Smile. Make eye contact. Be approachable. Be open to conversation. 2. Give compliments. Offer someone else a compliment, but make sure you’re honest and don’t overdo it. If you receive one in return and feel uncomfortable, just say “Thank you.” Don’t discount the praise by telling the person all the reasons why you don’t deserve it. 3. Join an ongoing conversation. At a party, it is perfectly appropriate to join in a conversation. People often walk about, moving in and out of different conversations. See if you can join in with a group of people who are discussing something that interests you.

5. Ask questions. Be curious and intrigued about other people and their lives and interests.

Smart Moves 1. Shake hands with your boss and other senior managers and wish them a happy holiday season. Make sure that your boss sees you at the holiday party, and also remembers speaking with you. When it comes time for promotions, your boss is likely to pick a pleasant individual who seems happy to be at the company.

8. Try to talk about things other than work. Take the opportunity to get to know people on a personal level.

Teddy Bear Picnic Thursday, December 2nd • 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM Calling all toddlers and parents. Join us at Ingalis Park for a fun morning playing on the playground and making new friends. Don’t forget your teddy bear and bag lunch for our picnic. Ingalis Park 735 SW 1 Street, Hallandale Beach, FL 33009 Jingle All the Way Friday, December 3rd • 5:00 PM - 7:00 OM Join in the jingle bell fun this evening including a bell craft, music, cookies, hot chocolate and jingle bell walk around the walking trail. Peter Bluesten Parks 501 SE 3 Street, Hallandale Beach, FL 33009

3. When you’re the guest at the office party, remember you are a reflection of your host. Complement them, don’t upstage them and don’t embarrass them. 4. Alcohol and office parties can be a bad mix. Pace yourself. Eat food and alternate alcoholic drinks with non-alcoholic ones in order to maintain control.

6. Be positive. People respond better to positive statements than negative.

Holiday Traditions • 4:00 PM - 5:00 PM Wednesday, December 1st Learn about the upcoming holidays and traditions associated with each of them including Hanukkah, Christmas and Kwanzaa. Oreste Blake Johnson Park 900 NW 8 Avenue, Hallandale Beach, FL 33009

2. Research the dress code before you go. Ask the organizer or someone who went to last year’s party. When in doubt, err on the conservative/formal side. Avoid showing too much skin.

4. Have some topics of conversation prepared, but make sure to actually listen to the other person rather than rehearsing what you’ll say next.

ArtsPark Fun Shop Saturday, November 27 & Sunday, November 28 Saturday, December 4 & Sunday, December 5 4:00 PM - 5:30 PM Hands on Interactive children’s arts and crafts projects. Information: (954) 921-3500

Bad Moves 1. Not attending the office party is bad form. You want to look like a team player. Your absence will be noted and could come back to haunt you at review time. Consider it an official work function.

7. Use active listening skills. Let the other person know that you understand what they are saying. Paraphrase what they say, ask for clarification and provide feedback.

9. Include your guest in conversations if he or she is shy or doesn’t know anyone. Try bringing them into the conversation by finding common interests. Stick to neutral topics; avoid religion and politics.

2. Office parties are opportunities to cultivate new relationships, but you need more than one conversation. Use the party as a starting point and follow up with colleagues after the party with additional social events. 3. Remember to say goodnight and thank you to the most senior person in attendance, the party organizer and your boss, before you leave.

Bourbon Spice Pecans Pecans drenched in sweet, buttery bourbon and infused with cinnamon spice are sure to make an impression. 4 cups pecans, halves or halves and pieces 1/2 cup (1 stick) butter 1 1/2 cups dark brown sugar, packed 1 teaspoon cinnamon 1 teaspoon salt 1/4 cup bourbon 1. Preheat oven to 350 F. Place pecans on rimmed cookie sheet and bake 10 minutes or until fragrant. Transfer toasted pecans to bowl; set aside. 2. In large skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Add toasted pecans and stir to coat. Add brown sugar, cinnamon and salt; continue to cook over medium heat, stirring constantly about 8 to 10 minutes. 3. Add bourbon; stir to combine and cook 1 to 2 minutes, mixing well. Remove skillet from the heat and pour pecans onto rimmed cookie sheet lined with parchment paper. Spread pecans into thin layer and let cool 20 minutes. Break mixture into bite-sized pieces and cool completely before packaging. 4. Store pecans in airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 week. Makes 4 cups.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I am in the eighth month of my first pregnancy. I’ve a friend who keeps telling me to have a C-section. She says it’s quick and painless. I never considered this and wonder about its wisdom. What would you recommend? Does having a C-section mean all future deliveries have to be done the same way? -- K.M. ANSWER: Cesarean sections can be lifesaving for the infant and for the mother. The reasons for having one don’t include speed of delivery simply for speed’s sake or for avoiding labor pain. You realize that a C-section involves surgical incisions, which, after the anesthesia wears off, are painful. And you realize that you have to recuperate from this operation as you would from any operation. Furthermore, all surgery involves potential dangers and complications. Serious bleeding is always possible. The uterus can become infected. Injuries to other pelvic organs can occurr. Natural childbirth is painful, but the pain can be minimized in a number of effective ways. I believe you’ll be surprised at how tolerable childbirth is. As for future pregnancies, the standard teaching used to be that once a woman had a C-section, all her future deliveries had to be C-sections. That’s no longer true. Second deliveries after a C-section can be vaginal deliveries, depending on some important circumstances. One of those is where the incision for the section was made. Have you discussed this with your doctor? Do so. I’ll be surprised if the doctor agrees to a C-section solely to avoid pain and speed delivery. DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Our 22-year-old granddaughter has developed an uncontrollable giggle. She giggles before, during and after everything she says. Each time we talk to her, the giggles and their frequency get worse. She is basically shy and appears to be nervous, and says she is not consciously aware of her giggling. She says her friends have remarked on this, too. Is this a tic disorder? Is there something a doctor can do to help her? Is there medication? -- S.N. ANSWER: Underlying anxiety, stress, shyness and social phobia set in motion reflex defenses for people who harbor these traits. It’s their way of coping with situations that generate discomfort. It’s not a tic, although it is somewhat similar. Both are involuntary. I would first talk to the young lady in a compassionate way and tell her that this behavior is misinterpreted by people and that she should make a conscious effort to suppress the giggling. Only if the giggling cannot be controlled and only if it’s causing her to suffer socially would I turn to medical people for help. Yes, there are treatments and medicines that can control anxiety and phobias, but a trial of self-treatment should come first.

• It was comedian-turned-U.S. Senator Al Franken who made the following sage observation: “Mistakes are a part of being human. Appreciate your mistakes for what they are: precious life lessons that can only be learned the hard way. Unless it’s a fatal mistake, which, at least, others can learn from.” • Those who study such things say that 1 percent of the world’s lizard species have no males. The females reproduce by parthenogenesis, which produces offspring that are clones of their mothers. • Amazon’s Kindle, Barnes and Noble’s Nook, Sony’s eReader -- it seems that everywhere you look these days people are reading onscreen. You may not realize, however, just how long digital books have been around. The first e-book was manually typed into a computer way back in 1971, when Michael S. Hart, the founder of Project Gutenberg, chose the Declaration of Independence to be the first literature so digitized. • A woman in Tennessee was once arrested for biking while intoxicated -- and she was on a stationary bike at the gym at the time. • According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, if you’re like the average American, you drink 22.7 gallons of coffee every year. The surprising thing about that statistic isn’t how much it is, though -- it’s how little. It seems that in the 1940s, Americans were drinking twice that amount of java. • If you look at the innards of a Boeing 747 airplane, you’ll find a whopping 171 miles of wiring. • If you consider surface area covered rather than population, the world’s largest city is in Inner Mongolia, where Hulunbuir covers more than 160,000 square miles. Thought for the Day: “Human beings are perhaps never more frightening than when they are convinced beyond doubt that they are right.” -Laurens Van der Post (c) 2010 King Features Synd., Inc.

• Here’s a great bit of advice given to a friend who recently gave birth to a darling baby boy: When you receive some of the more-complicated items from your gift registry, try them out right away. Before the baby comes, that is. You’ll have little time to set them up and learn how to work them with a newborn to care for. • Line a measuring cup with a plastic sandwich bag or plastic wrap to keep it clean between uses if you know you will be using it for multiple ingredients. • “I go through a lot of papers. Sometimes, instead of using one of those rubber fingers (and definitely instead of licking my finger), I twist a wide rubber band loosely but securely around the tip of my index finger. It really works.” -- R.F. in Massachusetts • “Clean a buildup of starch on your iron by wiping it down with a solution of diluted vinegar -- one part vinegar to three parts water. If you have a curling iron or flat iron for your hair, you can get rid of hairspray gunk the same way, just dampen a cloth with the mixture and wipe the iron clean.” -- F.P. in Pennsylvania • Filling up unused space in your deep freeze helps it to work more efficiently. An easy way to do this (and to prepare for holiday parties) is to bag ice from your regular freezer and use the bags to fill any empty areas in your deep freeze. You’ll always have a steady supply of ice, and it can be dumped out if you need the space. • Looking for an excellent prewash for ring around the collar? Look no further than your shower. Rub a small amount of shampoo in the stains and let sit for 5 minutes, then launder as usual. Send your tips to Now Here’s a Tip, c/o King Features Weekly Service, P.O.
