Independence Day is the most important national holiday in the United States. It commemorates the formal adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, which broke the formal ties between the colonies and Britain after the American Revolution had begun. Canada observes its equivalent of Independence Day, the establishment of its federal government, on July 1. Now known as Canada Day, this holiday was previously known as Dominion Day and Confederation Day and commemorates the British North America Act of July 1, 1867, which gave Canadians home rule. • The major objection to being ruled by Britain was taxation without representation. The colonists had no say in the decisions of English Parliament. • In May 1776, after nearly a year of trying to resolve their differences with England, the colonies sent delegates to the Second Continental Congress. Finally, in June, admitting that their efforts were hopeless, a committee was formed to compose the formal Declaration of Independence. Headed by Thomas Jefferson, the committee also included John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Philip Livingston and Roger Sherman. On June 28, 1776, Thomas Jefferson presented the first draft of the declaration to Congress. turn the page for more!

• The first two versions of the famous Liberty Bell were defective and had to be recast. The third version rang every Fourth of July from 1778 to 1846, when, according to legend, it cracked as it was being tolled for the death of George Washington’s birthday. • In 1778, General George Washington marked the Fourth with a double ration of rum for his soldiers and an artillery salute. Across the sea, ambassadors John Adams and Benjamin Franklin held a dinner for their fellow Americans in Paris, France. • An elaborate Fourth of July celebration was held in Philadelphia in 1788, following the ratification of the Constitution.

• Several important U.S. projects were started on Independence Day. Work on the Erie Canal in New York State began on July 4, 1817. Construction of the first railroad in the United States, the Baltimore and Ohio, was started on July 4, 1828. July 4 was the date selected in 1848 for laying the cornerstone of the Washington Monument. • Two American icons who were instrumental in ensuring the country’s independence passed away on July 4. Both Thomas Jefferson and John Adams died on Independence Day, 1826. • The patriotic poem “America the Beautiful” was published on July 4, 1895, by Wellesley College professor Katherine Lee Bates. • The July 4 Coney Island Hot Dog Eating Contest was first held in 1916, the year Nathan’s opened its flagship restaurant on Surf Avenue in Coney Island, New York. • Now, every July 4, a group of 20 steely-stomached individuals line up behind a 30-foot table at Nathan’s on Coney Island for the world hot dog eating championship. At 12 noon exactly, crushed by fans and media, the competitors begin the historic 12-minute contest.

INDEPENDENCE DAY (continued): • Although Americans celebrate Independence Day on July 4, John Adams originally thought it would be celebrated on the second. Here is what he wrote to his wife on July 3, 1776: “The Second Day of July 1776, will be the most memorable Epocha, in the History of America. I believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations, as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated, as the Day of Deliverance by solemn Acts of Devotion to God.” • The signing of the Declaration was not completed until August 1776, but the Fourth of July holiday has been accepted as the official anniversary of U.S. independence. It was not declared a legal holiday until 1941. Today, it is celebrated in all states and territories of the United States. • The 56 signers of the Declaration of Independence did not sign at the same time. The official event occurred on August 2, 1776, when 50 men signed it. • The first Independence Day celebration took place in Philadelphia on July 8, 1776, four days after the Declaration of Independence was adopted. The Liberty Bell sounded from the tower of Independence Hall on that day summoning citizens to gather for the first public reading of the Declaration by Colonel John Nixon. Other city bells also rang forth as bands played. • Within a few years of that first commemoration, the Fourth of July was observed throughout most of the new nation,.

INDEPENDENCE DAY (continued): • Eleven places in the United States have “independence” in their name. The most populous of these is Independence, Missouri, with 113,288 residents. Five places adopted the name “freedom.” Freedom, California, with 6,000 residents, has the largest population among these. There is one place named “patriot,” Patriot, Indiana, with a population of 202. • What could be more fitting than spending July 4 in a place called “America”? There are five such places in the country, with the most populous being American Fork, Utah, with 21,941 residents. • On July 1, 1867, under the terms of the British North America Act, Canada East (Quebec), Canada West (Ontario), Nova Scotia and New Brunswick united to become the Dominion of Canada. • Canada Day became a statute in 1879 but was initially called Dominion Day. There are not any records of early celebrations of Canada (Dominion) Day, except for two years. In 1917, it was used to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Confederation. It was also a backdrop for the dedication of the Parliament Building’s Centre Block, which was being constructed. • The government extended celebrations beyond the Ottawa region in 1980 by sponsoring the development of festivities on a local level. In 1981, 15 major cities offered fireworks to commemorate the day. • It wasn’t until 1982 that Dominion Day was officially changed to Canada Day. MUSIC LEGEND: TOM JONES Born Thomas Jones Woodward in Pontypridd, South Wales, Great Britain, on June 7, 1940, today, musician Tom Jones has sold over 100 million records. • Life wasn’t easy for young Tom Jones. His father worked the coalmines of the Rhondda Valley, while his mother tended the house and the two children. • Jones began singing at an early age. He sang in the church and with the choir at school. He would ask his mother to “pull the drapes and announce me,” as he sang on his “stage” in the sitting room. He wasn’t a very good student. After graduation, at age 17, he married and had a son. • Tom Jones began singing professionally in 1963, performing as Tommy Scott with the Senators, a Welsh group. In 1964, he recorded a handful of solo tracks with record producer Joe Meek and shopped them to various record companies with little success. • But persistence pays off. Record companies at first found Tom’s sound raucous and too powerful, the performance style too forward and sexual. Then in late 1964, he landed a recording contract with Decca Records. • Tom Jones’ first single was not a great success, but the next choice, a new song called “It’s Not Unusual,” was a huge international hit. Considered “too hot” by the established BBC Radio at the time, it was played by the pirate offshore station “Radio Caroline.” By the next year, Jones found himself opening for the Rolling Stones and playing alongside the Spencer Davis Group. • Jones` popularity began to slip somewhat by the middle of 1966. So he decided to change his image to a more respectable, mature tuxedoed crooner. Jones also began to sing material that appealed to a broad audience, like the country songs “Green, Green Grass of Home” and “Detroit City.” The strategy worked, as he returned to the top of the charts in the U.K. and began hitting the Top 40 again in the United States.

TOM JONES (continued): • Jones was offered his own television show in the summer of 1969. A contract was drawn with ABC TV that was the largest ever between network and artist. The show’s location was split between London and Los Angeles, and it included an impressive guest list of virtually every major star of the day. • In the late 60s, Jones began to play in Las Vegas. Soon after, he began recording less, choosing to concentrate on his lucrative club performances. After his longtime manager died in the late 1970s, Jones’ son, Mark Woodward, became his manager. • In 1974, Jones moved to the United States, buying the mansion formerly belonging to Dean Martin in Bel-Air, Los Angeles. There he lived with his wife of 50 years, Melinda.

• On March 29, 2006, 65-year-old Tom Jones was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II. In a statement to the press, he said, “When you first come into show business and you get a hit record, it is the start of something. As time goes on, it just gets better. This is the best thing that I have had. It is a wonderful feeling, a heady feeling.”

FIREWORKS

Compared to the big bangs of today, the first fireworks had humble beginnings. They were actually nothing more than green bamboo thrown into fires to scare spirits away in ancient China. • Fireworks were used in ancient Indian and Thai religious ceremonies. Some rockets were 8 to 10 feet long and were attached to bamboo sticks that were 40 feet high.

Believe it or not, in the 1400s, Florence, Italy, was the center of the fireworks industry. At the time, fireworks were just one effect in a celebration rather than its focus. At religious festivals, Italians made plaster figures that spewed fireworks from their eyes and mouths. • The 1533 coronation parade for Anne Boleyn included a papier-mâché dragon that belched fire. • Fireworks became very popular in Great Britain during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. The great William Shakespeare mentions fireworks in his plays, and fireworks were so much enjoyed by the Queen herself that she created a “Fire Master of England.” King James II was so pleased with the fireworks display that celebrated his coronation that he knighted his Fire Master. • The first fireworks recorded in America were set off by an Englishman, Captain John Smith. Smith, of course, gained fame in the story of Pocahontas. • When newlyweds Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette celebrated their royal bonds with a fireworks display on May 10, 1774, they inadvertently set in motion a stampede that left 800 of their wedding attendees dead. • The first Independence Day fireworks celebration was in 1776 and was memorialized by then future President John Adams as follows: “The day (Independence Day) will be the most memorable in the history of America. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, bonfires and illuminations (fireworks) from one end of this continent to the other, from this day forward forevermore.” • During World War II, the first bomb dropped on Tokyo, Japan, was made by a fireworks company in the United

States. At that time of national need, most fireworks companies changed to wartime production, as was also the case in World War I and the Civil War. • Fireworks central in the U.S.A.: New Castle, Pennsylvania, home to the nationally recognized display companies Zambelli Internationale and Pyrotechnico, proclaims itself to be the “Fireworks capital of America.” Rozzi’s Famous Fireworks of Loveland, Ohio, also began operations in New Castle, before moving its headquarters to the Cincinnati area. • Workers who make firecrackers have to be sure to wear an ensemble that is entirely cotton so that the static electricity generated by their ordinary clothing will not set off the fireworks. • The value of fireworks imported from China represents the bulk of all U.S. fireworks imports (about $136 million). U.S. exports of fireworks, by comparison, amount to $13.5 million, with Germany purchasing more than any other single country ($5 million).

A GREEN OUTING Summer picnics and barbeques are an essential part of American culture. They are a great way to bring family and friends together, enjoy w a r m summer days and if you plan ahead get some exercise with fun f a m i l y games. On the other hand these same great events can become events that grow your environmental footprint. There are easy ways to keep your outdoor events environmentally friendly and fun. To make your outdoor event green, use plastic plates and cups made of recycled materials, which you can take home, wash and use for all your summer picnics and cook outs. They can also come in handy as extra pieces at home. For utensils use your day to day silverware. Always think about recycling. When going to a park, beach or any other outdoor venue where you will be cooking make sure you bring bags that you mark as recycling. Cans, bottles and paper products can all be taken home for recycling. Most importantly remember to engage all of your guests in why you want to recycle everything you can. The message of green is an important of going green.

Bladder Infections Not Always Painful DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Please write something about bladder infections. Can you have a bladder infection with no symptoms? -- A. ANSWER: The signs and symptoms of bladder infections are the same for men and women. The irritated, infected bladder demands frequent, urgent trips to the bathroom so it can be emptied. People have a burning sensation when passing urine. Pain is felt in the bladder area. Sometimes blood appears in the urine. Men have far fewer bladder infections than women. Women have a shorter urethra than men. The urethra is the tube that empties the bladder of urine. Women’s urethras open in an area that has a large bacterial population. Bacteria can ascend the female urethra without trouble. It’s harder for them to climb the male urethra. And men’s prostate glands secrete substances that have antibacterial properties. The presence of bacteria in the urine without any signs of bladder infection is called asymptomatic bacteriuria. Doctors treat pregnant women with asymptomatic bacteriuria to prevent symptoms from arising, as they often do during pregnancy. Infected urine, even without symptoms, can lower the birth weight of babies who were in the uterus during that period. Otherwise, asymptomatic bacteriuria in women or men, at any age, usually does not require treatment. In women, bacteria in the bladder are often transiently there. They disappear many times on their own. Treatment can lead to the development of resistant bacteria and can produce side effects. Furthermore, it is costly. The guidance from most experts, therefore, is not to treat asymptomatic bacteriuria. Exceptions exist. Diabetics might benefit from treatment. The topic of urinary tract infections and their treatment are covered in the booklet on that topic. Readers can order a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 1204W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I would like to know why you lose flesh with age, but not bone, nor skin, nor fat. One doctor told me that’s why people get colder when they get older. I am rapidly losing flesh. -- L.J. ANSWER: People lose muscle with age. The process is called sarcopenia (SAHR-coe-PEA-knee-uh). I never thought of it until you brought it up, but it could be a reason why older people chill quickly. Muscles generate heat, and they serve as insulation. Shivering is a response to a cold environment. Shivering muscles give off heat. Lots of unpleasant things happen with aging. Metabolism slows, and that’s another reason why older people complain of the cold. Our bodies don’t repair themselves as well as they did when we were young. Bones do lose strength and size with age. Growing old is not for the faint of heart. Sarcopenia and bone loss can be kept to a minimum and possibly reversed if people exercise. The kind of exercise they must do is “resistance” exercise -- lifting weights. It sounds nutty, but it’s for real. Weights don’t have to be of the same magnitude that people use to prepare for a bodybuilding contest. You can start with one-pound weights and gradually increase the poundage when you become comfortable with that amount of weight. *** Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. (c) 2010 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved

Peach Clafouti This country-French dessert pancake typically calls for cherries but is just as delicious with peaches and almonds. We love the puffy golden treat warm with whipped cream.

8/25/10

3 medium (about 1 pound) ripe peaches, peeled and sliced 3 large eggs 1 cup half-and-half or light cream 3/4 cup all-purpose flour 6 tablespoons margarine or butter, melted and cooled 2 tablespoons almond-flavor liquor 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract 1/8 teaspoon salt 1/3 cup sugar 2 tablespoons sugar 1/4 cup sliced natural almonds

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I should buy stock in the aluminum foil industry? My 6-year-old boxer/hound mix, Shera, will not stay off the furniture. My bed and livingroom furniture are lined with aluminum foil to stop her from climbing them. I have a 14-year-old dog, Bubba, who sleeps with me at night, but never occupies the bed or furniture by day. Shera is kennel trained and sleeps in her kennel at night with the door fastened. Bubba is getting near the end, and I don’t want to take on another dog until I solve this problem with Shera. Would it be best to wait until Bubba is not sleeping with me to correct this territorial issue? -- Susan W., via email DEAR SUSAN: I don’t think this is a territorial issue so much as an issue of Shera figuring out how far to push her boundaries. Naturally, she will want to get up on the couch or the bed just like Bubba.

1. Preheat oven to 400 F. Grease shallow 2-quart casserole or baking dish. Arrange peach slices evenly in casserole. 2. In blender, combine eggs, half-and-half, flour, melted margarine or butter, almond liqueur, vanilla, salt and 1/3 cup sugar; blend until smooth. 3. Pour batter over peaches; sprinkle with almonds and remaining 2 tablespoons sugar. 4. Bake clafouti 35 to 40 minutes or until puffed and golden brown. Cool on wire rack 15 minutes (clafouti will deflate as it cools). Serve warm. Serves 8.

But you don’t have to wait until Bubba is gone to start addressing Shera’s behavior. You can choose to wait -especially if taking care of Bubba is stressful right now and you just don’t want to deal with a new challenge. Shera’s behavior probably will not change during this period. But if you have the time and energy, start training Shera to stay off the furniture. It’s a matter of you being the leader of the family, and what you say goes. That means if Bubba gets to sleep on the bed and Shera doesn’t, too tough for Shera. As far as how: I’d recommend spending more time with Shera, playing or doing basic obedience training on the leash, next to the furniture she likes to jump on. When she wants to get on the couch, tug her away, have her face you and command “sit” or “lie down” and “stay.” Basically, retrain her way of thinking about the purpose of those rooms.
