• Halfway between Boston and New Bedford, Massachusetts, stood an old house, built in 1709 as a toll-collecting station, stable and inn for weary travelers. In 1930, along came Ken and Ruth Wakefield, who purchased the house and opened a lodge, naming it the Toll House Inn. Ruth provided many delicious meals for her guests, as well as tempting baked goods. While mixing up a batch of her favorite cookie recipe, as an experiment, she added a chopped chocolate bar. It was so well-liked, she continued the practice, and the treat became quite popular throughout the area. So popular, it soon became known as the Toll House cookie, a name that endures today. turn the page for more!

OVERCOMING THE ODDS:

RICK HANSEN British Columbian Rick Hansen had a dream — to represent Canada at the Olympic Games. But his life took a turn that he never could have imagined. Read on to see how Hansen triumphed over adversity by following his motto: “If you believe in a dream and have the courage to try, great things can be accomplished. Anything is possible.” • As a high school student, Hansen was a natural athlete and had excelled in five sports, winning all-star awards in each one. In his free time, he was an avid fisherman. One simple decision after a fishing trip changed his life. He and his best friend hitchhiked home, taking a ride in the back of a pickup truck. On a winding road, the driver swerved, skidded and went off the road, and the two teens were thrown out of the truck. The friend walked away from the crash, while Hansen received a spinal cord injury, and at age 15, was paralyzed from the waist down. • Hansen spent seven months in rehabilitation in Vancouver, B.C., and after high school graduation, enrolled at the University of British Columbia. There he became the first disabled student to receive a degree in physical education. It was at the university that Hansen met another disabled athlete, Terry Fox, who had lost a leg to bone cancer. Fox had an ambitious plan to run across Canada from Newfoundland to British Columbia to raise money for cancer research. Unfortunately, Fox’s cancer returned, and he was forced to halt his mission. But Hansen was so inspired by Fox’s

• Hansen’s impressive journey, dubbed the “Man in Motion World Tour,” began in March of 1985 in Vancouver. His trek covered 34 countries on four continents, a distance of more than 24,850 miles (40,000 km). It was 26 months before he pulled back into Vancouver, having raised $26 million for his cause. • Yet the Man in Motion tour is only one of his incredible achievements. Hansen has been the victor in 19 international wheelchair marathons. He is a wheelchair volleyball and basketball national champ and winner of six Paralympic medals. At the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, Hansen was selected as the torchbearer to bring the flame into the stadium. • Hansen continues his work as an advocate for those with spinal cord injuries. He serves as president and CEO of the Rick Hansen Foundation, which has raised upwards of $200 million for this important cause. He has co-authored two books, one about his Man in Motion adventure, and another entitled “Going the Distance: 7 Steps to Personal Change.” • As an in-demand motivational speaker, Hansen particularly enjoys making a difference in the lives of young people. Along this line, he has served as a high school basketball and volleyball coach. Throughout his adversity, he has maintained that “a shattered spine is not a shattered spirit,” and in his words, “Courage is being able to recognize and overcome fear or act in the face of danger, and to do so with dignity and integrity.”

By Samantha Weaver • It was 19th-century German philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer who made the following sage observation: “There is no absurdity so palpable but that it may be firmly planted in the human head if you only begin to inculcate it before the age of five, by constantly repeating it with an air of great solemnity.” • Those who study such things say that half of all money spent on food in the United States is spent in restaurants. • If, like me, you are constantly finding excess wire hangers in your closets, you probably won’t be surprised to learn that more than 2.7 billion of them were imported in 2010 alone. • You might be surprised to learn that beer brewers in Australia are on the cutting edge of alternative energy production. They have created a “beer battery” - the world’s first, they claim -- in which electricity is generated by bacteria consuming the waste that is created by the brewing process. • Companies today sometimes seem to go too far in advertising their products, but consider Richard Chesebrough, who invented the petroleum jelly Vaseline in 1872. In order to market his new creation as a salve for cuts and burns, he traveled around New York state demonstrating the efficacy of the product by burning his skin with acid, then applying Vaseline to the injury. A display of his past burns that had been healed with Vaseline would, in theory, convince people to buy the product.

But Gerry put in 100-hour weeks in order for Rory to succeed at the game of golf. At 8 a.m. he cleaned bathrooms at a local rugby club until breaking for an hour lunch at 12. Then he worked a bartending shift at the golf club until 6, broke for dinner and worked another bartending shift until midnight. All of that money (plus what Rosie took in working the night shift at a local factory) went to the kid. So it was fitting that on Father’s Day, 22-year-old Rory McIlroy lofted the U.S. Open trophy at Maryland’s Congressional golf course after scorching the field en route to his first major victory and delivered another perfectly With the exception of the seriously deranged or mentally timed shot. ill, it is virtually inconceivable for a parent to harm their own child. “Happy Father’s Day, Dad, this one’s for you,” he said with a grin. The story begins in the Irish town of Holywood in County Down, a port just outside of Belfast that is home to about 12,000 people. It begins inauspiciously enough -- a child is born to Gerry and Rose McIlroy. He is to be their only son, and he is

At the age of 2, after being handed a miniature golf club for the first time a few months earlier, Rory strokes a 40-yard drive down the middle of the fairway of the Holywood Golf Club. ] So the story changes. Gerry was a scratch golfer during his day, but the day Rory showed his father that golf was something he really wanted, he did what most any loving father would try and do -- give up his aspirations in order to let his son achieve greatness. Look, the sporting world -- the entire world for that matter -- is rife with tales of the overbearing father and the son who resented him. The satirical newspaper The Onion perhaps summed it up best when its recent headline read “If Only There Was a Song Describing the Bittersweet, Cyclical Nature of the Father-Son Relationship.”

Fairy Rings Q: I believe that I have two areas in my back lawn that are “fairy rings.” They have a center of green grass that is surrounded by dead grass. Is there anything I can do about this? -- Fred J., Toronto A: Fairy rings are caused by growth of a certain type of fungi (mushrooms), which, above the surface, grow within the dead or thin area of the circle. Below the surface, a dense fungal mat is usually well established by the time the characteristic “ring” appears on the lawn. These rings measure a couple feet in diameter but gradually expand over time, to as large as 20 feet.

The rings are annoying and, like most fungal growth, are very difficult to control. However, there are options to try. One method, which can be undertaken quickly with minimal damage to the lawn, is to reduce the influence of fairy rings. Fertilize the area several times per year with nitrogen-rich fertilizer to mask the fairy rings somewhat. To stimulate grass growth in the dead areas of the rings, you’ll need to DEAR PAW’S CORNER: We had two dogs for aerate and get water beneath the fungal mat (comprised of the past six years. One of the hardest parts of my job is getting people to understand the basics of exercise and working out for whatever their goals are. You see I am in a specialized field that the general public has no knowledge of what they are doing. Now many clients come with knowledge of what they think working out is and how they should go about it and all the myths that come with their incorrect knowledge. One does not train as a runner the same way one trains to gain muscle mass, momentum training is not for the woman that wants to be able to pick up her 2 yr. old, who seems to get heavier each day, and so they are many different techniques that have to do with each client’s personal fitness goals. Aside from the various goals and methods of resistant training is the training itself. I get a tremendous amount of people that come and want to train with me for a finite period of time and the people think that after they devote that amount of time 4, 6, 8 weeks then that is all they will need to get their body back in shape and they can go on with their lives. For some rhyme or reason a lot of prevalent thought is that one can start to workout and just get their body in better shape in 6 weeks and then that is all they will have to do to get their body where they want it to be. Well, if you have been reading this column for any length of time then you know that expectation is completely false. Working Out is not something you do for a finite period of time, working out or resistance training is something you start and never finish it is something that must be practiced on a regular basis to receive the benefits and continued results. You must add this to your lifestyle and you will see the results pop up in many various shapes and forms, you can carry bags from the grocery store, you can hold your child in your arms longer, you can actually lift the junk in your garage, you will feel a sturdiness to your stride and put a little pep in your step from the accumulative affects of resistant training. So start training now and remember a muscle a day keep the Doctors at Bay!

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I have the dry type of macular degeneration. I take PreserVision with lutein tablets twice a day. I hear lutein is very good for my eyes, and I would like to take more than the 10 mg a day that I get in my tablets. I don’t know how much is safe. My doctor said he didn’t know. Will macular degeneration leave me completely blind? How long will it be before I cannot see anymore? -- C.B. ANSWER: The macula is a small, round area in the center of the retina, the layer at the back of the eye that transmits incoming images to the brain so we can see. The macula is essential for clear, central vision, the kind needed to read, to drive and to recognize faces. Off-to-the-side vision remains.

We reported earlier that “Will & Grace” star Sean Hayes would play Larry Fine and “Madtv’s” Will Sasso would play Curley in “The Three Stooges Movie.” Now we can tell you that Moe Howard will be played by Chris Diamantopolas. You saw him as Robin Williams in the “Mork & Mindy” TV movie, in the eighth season of “24” as chief of staff Rob Weiss, and as Frank Sinatra in the “Kennedy’s” miniseries. To check out what they’ll look like, Google the new Three Stooges film. Add “Glee’s” Jane Lynch, “Modern Family’s” Sofia Vergara, “Dreamgirls” Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson, “Boston Legal’s” Craig Bierko and “7th Heaven’s” Stephen Collins, and you’ve got a great cast. It looks as if The Farrelly Brothers will give “The Stooges” the send-up they truly deserve. After this movie comes out, though, if anyone asks you to “pick two fingers,” trust me ... DON’T! As with any sweetener, there are challenges to using stevia in food products. Stevia is naturally bitter, but tastes sweet after some delay. Although it is temperature and acid stable, the natural bitterness and intense sweetness are challenges the food industry will have to overcome. Consumers will need to taste stevia and decide for themselves how well they like it. Another possible challenge is the price. Currently, it is expensive to use stevia or its active ingredient in foods. Products containing this naturally derived sweetener may be out of many consumers’ price range.

Bring the 4-inch edges of the fabric right sides together, pin and sew a 1/4-inch seam to create a circular, pleated fabric ready to attach to the glove. 5. Ease the pleated cuff wrong side out over the right side of the glove and pin in place. (I placed the 4-inch-long seam above the thumb side of the glove.) If the pleated cuff is too large, add another pleat. Remove pins as you sew 1/2-inch from the edge. Turn cuff over the seam and fluff the pleats. Repeat with second glove. For extra pizzazz, use your imagination and items in your craft box to decorate the gloves with add-ons. A glue gun works quickly. Their work gave creditors a means of predicting which customers are more or less likely to default on loans. Your score can pre-determine how you’re treated by creditors: 1. A high credit scores equates to a lower anticipated rate of default. 2. Creditors raise or lower the interest rates they offer you based on your likely risk of default. 3. The higher your credit score, the better the deal you’ll get on interest and the more money you’re likely to save over time. The front screen of the MyFico.com website gives a perfect example of potential savings: “A 100-point difference in your FICO score could mean over $40,000 extra in interest payments over the life of a 30-year mortgage on a $300,000 home loan.” FICO scores range from 300 to 850 and are based payment history, length of credit history, new credit you might open, amount of established credit and the types of credit. A mix of credit types -- perhaps vehicle, mortgage, credit card - will yield a better score than all credit cards or vehicle only. With all the lender emphasis on credit worthiness, a simple late payment can damage your credit score. The later it is, the more damage is done. Here’s an additional credit fact: Unfair though it is, the higher your credit score, the bigger the “ding” to your credit if you do miss payments. Here is a comparison of late payment and bankruptcy at two levels of credit score and the length of time for the score to rise again: Thirty days late: Credit score of 680 might be cut to 600620, but can rise again in nine months. A score of 780 might be cut to 670-690, and it could take three years for the score to rise again. Bankruptcy: Credit score of 680 might be cut to 530-550, and could take five years to rise again. A score of 780 might be cut to 540-560, and it could take seven to 10 years for the score to rise again. For more information on keeping your credit score healthy, visit MyFico.com. READERS: Thanks to all who entered Celebrity Extra’s summer of contests. Congrats to Steven S., Aaron B., Anthony S., Jennifer B. and Tiffany R., who each won an autographed CD of Rachel Fine’s debut CD, “Own Your Own.” Chris C., Frank G., David D., Alicia W. and Rita R. all won a copy of Barton Seaver’s cookbook, “For Cod and Country.” And last but not least, congrats to Kary S., who won the “True Blood” season three DVD set. Q: I was wondering what one of my favorite TV hosts, Leeza Gibbons, has been up to lately. Is there a show on which I can catch this beautiful lady? -- Paul G., via e-mail

• Clean baby-food jars can be filled with small snacks like Cheerios and doled out in the car during longer trips. They hold just enough for a quick snack. • “If you pull all the way into your garage, tack some carpet scraps to the wall that you pull in toward. It will protect the wall’s paint, and it will protect your car’s bumper if you accidentally rub the wall.” -- U.F. in North Carolina • For dance recitals, make sure to get a recording of the music to be used. You also can videotape the practice performance and have the student watch it, pointing out the great parts and the parts that need work. -- A Reader, via email • To stop runs in hose or tights, paint the bottom of the run with clear nail polish. Let dry and repeat. Do this while wearing them, and gently unstick from the skin. It works better when the hose or tights are stretched as they will be worn, and you don’t risk attaching the run side to the other side of the tights. years, Steven Fenton. The former longtime “Entertainment Tonight” host -- who hosts the PBS show “My Generation” -- will be back on daily TV this fall in the syndicated program “America Now,” with Bill Rancic. The half-hour daily news program will deliver short segments of timely information covering lifestyle topics like health, beauty, finance, family and home. Check your local TV listings as the Sept. 12 premiere date gets closer, and check www. celebrityextraonline.com in mid-July to read my full interview with the gorgeous newlywed. *** Q: I am a longtime Don Johnson fan and would love to see him on the screen again -- any screen. Since his pilot “Mann’s World” wasn’t picked up, do you know if he has anything else in the works? -- Whitney A., via e-mail A: If you haven’t already seen his turn on this past season’s “Eastbound & Down” as Kenny Powers’ father, Eduardo Sanchez, then you first and foremost must watch that. Then head over to Will Ferrell’s comedy website, funnyordie. com, and check out Don’s hilarious short, “Four Loko Vineyards.” Then you’ll need to wait a little while to see him in the thriller “Vineyard Haven,” which is set for a spring 2012 release. In it, Don plays an eccentric writing professor who wedges himself between a couple in distress. *** Q: I finally saw the Sylvester Stallone shoot-’em-up extravaganza, “The Expendables,” on DVD the other night. The movie was actually a lot of fun, and I was surprised to have enjoyed it so much. I also noticed that the ending left it open for a possible sequel. Could there be plans for one? -- Jessica R., Hamilton, Ohio A: You know it! The movie took in $266 million worldwide, so you can bet Sly and company want to cash in on this particular cash cow. All of the original “good guys” are rumored to be returning for the sequel, which is set for an August 2012 release. There’s no word yet on whether exCalifornia governor Arnold Schwarzenegger plans to make another cameo (or perhaps a larger role this time?).

• “I somehow lost one of a pair of socks that had nonslip gripper dots on the bottoms of the feet. I gave the odd sock to my mom, and she uses it as a jar or bottle opener. The gripper dots help her get a hold of the lid to unscrew it.” -- R.J. in Ohio • To freshen a lunchbox, dampen a paper towel with plain vinegar and stick it inside the lunchbox. Leave overnight.
