adviser to Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau. Aykroyd was born with not one, but two interesting physical conditions — syndactyly (webbed toes) and heterochromia, meaning his eyes are different colors. • Will Ferrell is more than just a funny guy, he is also a marathon runner, having competed in several major races, including Boston and New York. After serving as his high school football team’s kicker and working parttime as a bank teller, he went on to study Sports Broadcasting at USC. Ferrell’s father was a backup musician for The Righteous Brothers. • Turning 94 this month hasn’t slowed down comedienne Phyllis Diller, who still appears occasionally on television. Although known for her wild hairdos, outlandish costumes and cackling laugh, she is also an accomplished pianist and painter. During World War II, Diller spent her days as a housewife and mother, doing advertising copywriting on the side while her husband worked at a B-24 bomber plant. She makes no attempts to conceal the fact that she’s had at least 15 plastic surgery procedures. • It wasn’t Lisa Kudrow’s first choice to go into the entertainment industry. Kudrow, of “Friends” fame, intended to join her physician father in the medical field. After receiving her degree in biology from Vassar, she did research on the cause of headaches for eight years. Her brother’s childhood friend, comedian Jon Lovitz, convinced her to give comedy a try, and in 2005, she became the highest-paid television actress of all time, along with her “friends” Jennifer Aniston and Courteney Cox, earning $1 million per episode of the popular sitcom. • Two figure-skating Olympic champions are having their birthday this month. Dorothy Hamill was the ladies’ singles gold medal winner in 1976. Overnight she became

boostmobilehallandale@gmail.com “America’s Sweetheart,” with females across the nation copying her bobbed hairstyle. The Dorothy Hamill doll was introduced shortly afterward. In recent years, she has penned two autobiographies and has survived breast cancer. Kristi Yamaguchi took the Olympic gold in 1992, turning professional immediately afterward. It was at these Olympics that she met her husband, who was a member of the Olympic hockey team. Yamaguchi’s mother was born in a Japanese internment camp where her grandparents had been sent during World War II. Yamaguchi was the celebrity winner of “Dancing with the Stars” in its sixth season. • Richard Starkey turns 71 this month. If you don’t recognize the name, you may have followed his career as Ringo Starr, the drummer for the Beatles from 1962 to 1970. Starr wasn’t the Beatles’ first choice for their percussionist. He was already playing in Liverpool with the band Rory Storm and the Hurricanes, while Pete Best was drumming for the Beatles. Starr was very ill for much of his childhood and spent two years in a sanatorium recovering from pleurisy. If you’re a fan of Thomas the Tank Engine, you’ve heard Starr narrating the character’s first two series on children’s television. • July baby Donald Rumsfeld served as Secretary of Defense under two different U.S. presidents, Gerald Ford and George W. Bush. It’s noteworthy that while attending Princeton University as a young man, his roommate was Frank Carlucci, who also went on to serve as Secretary of Defense under Ronald Reagan. • J.K. Rowling penned the first book of the Harry Potter series as a single mom living on welfare. Within five years, she was a millionaire. She conceived the idea of the boy wizard while sitting through a four-hour train delay back in 1990. Seven books and 4,195 pages later, Forbes magazine estimates her net worth in excess of $1 billion. The series has been translated into 65 languages. • Remembered for her extravagant collection of 2,700 pairs of shoes, former first lady of the Philippines Imelda Marcos is a former Miss Philippines. To put her shoes in a mathematical equation, if she were to change her shoes three times a day, never putting on the same pair twice, it would take upwards of two years and five months to wear them all. She and her husband Ferdinand plundered millions of dollars of the country’s wealth during their 21year tenure.

His father, a factory worker, had played semi-pro baseball for a time. Payton spent his early high school years playing drums in the school marching band, singing in the choir and as a member of the track team. During his NFL career, he enjoyed playing practical jokes on his fellow Bears and was known to run to the locker room after a game and lock the door, leaving his teammates standing in the cold as he took a long, hot shower. During pileups on the field, it wasn’t uncommon for him to untie the refs’ shoelaces. Off the field, he loved to cook and play chess and was an accomplished dancer. Sadly, he contracted a rare liver disease, which progressed into bile duct cancer and claimed his life at age 45.

OVERCOMING THE ODDS:

MICHAEL J. FOX Canadian celebrity Michael J. Fox, struck down at the height of his career, has used his adversity to further the search for a cure for illness. Here are some facts about this optimistic individual who has chosen to overcome his disabilities. • The Edmonton-born Fox moved several times as a child, the result of his father’s military career, finally settling in

British Columbia. As a 15-year-old, he made his acting debut in a Canadian sitcom, “Leo and Me.” As he devoted more time to his passion for acting, his schoolwork was neglected and before long, he was flunking nearly every class. He made the decision to drop out of high school to pursue his career, something he now calls a “stupid youthful mistake.” His social studies teacher advised him, “You’re making a big mistake, Fox. You won’t be cute forever.” Fox achieved his GED 15 years after dropping out. • At 18, Fox moved to Los Angeles. It wasn’t an easy road as he struggled to make a name for himself, and he lived on macaroni and cheese for months. He had sold all his furniture to survive shortly before landing his breakout role as Alex P. Keaton on TV’s “Family Ties” at age 21. Over the series’ seven-year run, he collected three Emmy Awards. In the midst of the sitcom, he took on the role of time-traveling teen Marty McFly in “Back to the Future,” a huge box-office hit, followed up by two sequels.

But the secret is learning from the loss and realizing that none of those holes are vacuums.” Time magazine has placed him on their list of 100 people “whose power, talent or moral example is transforming the world.” ®

• It was on to “Spin City” in 1996, where he portrayed New York’s deputy mayor, a role that earned Fox three Golden Globes and an Emmy. • It was during the filming of “Doc Hollywood” in 1991 that Fox first noticed an incontrollable twitching in his finger. Shortly afterward, he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease, a condition he chose to keep secret. On the set of “Spin City” he often kept his left hand in his pocket. This degenerative neurological disorder affects one in 100 people over age 60. Fox was 29. Those with the disease experience tremors, balance problems, slowness, reduced facial expression and an inability to direct their movements. • Fox went public in 1998 and underwent a thalamotomy, a procedure that surgically destroys a portion of the brain’s thalamus, effective in dramatically reducing tremors. In 2000, as his symptoms became worse, he announced his departure from “Spin City.” He established The Michael J. Fox Foundation, devoted to research for a cure for Parkinson’s. He continues to take limited short-term acting roles, as well as providing voices for a variety of popular children’s films. • Fox has added best-selling author to his list of accomplishments with the publication of “Lucky Man,” followed by “Always Looking Up: The Adventures of an Incurable Optimist.” He maintains that staying upbeat is the key to fighting his disease and jokes about brushing his teeth, saying it’s “like having an electric toothbrush without the battery.” In his words, “There’s always failure.

It was Danish author, philosopher and theologian Soren Kierkegaard who made the following sage observation: “People demand freedom of speech as a compensation for the freedom of thought which they seldom use.”

After the release of Alfred Hitchcock’s iconic film “The Birds,” pet stores all over the country saw a sharp decline in the sales of pet birds.

You might be surprised to learn that during the first airing of the original “Star Trek” series, no episode ranked higher than No. 52 in the ratings.

According to the Guinness Book of Records, it was poor Donna Griffiths who suffered the longest sneezing fit ever recorded. On Jan. 13, 1981, the 12-year-old girl started sneezing, and she continued sneezing every day for more than two and a half years.

If you’re like the average American, you eat 20 quarts of ice cream every year.

I’m sure you’ve heard the term “dimwit” used as an insult, but, as it turns out, the word is more descriptive than derogatory. The human brain actually uses less power than a 100-watt light bulb.

A man named Patrick Hooligan lived in London in the mid-1800s. He was such a notorious troublemaker that his name is still used today to refer to ruffians and hoodlums.

In 1909, in England, one Lord Barbazon took a pig up for a ride in an airplane. Bovines seemingly got short shrift; the first cow didn’t take to the air until 1930. It was in February of that year that a cow was loaded into an airplane in St. Louis. It was milked during the flight, and the milk was parachuted to earth.

Thought for the Day: “He’s turned his life around. He used to be depressed and miserable. Now he’s miserable and depressed.” -- David Frost (c) 2011 King Features Synd., Inc.

Freeing a Stuck Window Q: I’m renting an apartment in a 100-year-old building, and the apartment itself hasn’t been updated much in the past 20 years or more. One annoying factor is that all of the windows are stuck shut. The landlord told me I’m welcome to make minor repairs or renovations and take the cost out of my rent. But I’m a little worried about breaking these very old windows in trying to open them. Any suggestions? -- Daniel T., Brockton, Mass. A: Because of the age of the windows, a number of factors could be in play that are keeping those windows lodged shut. Previous tenants or owners may have tried to seal the windows shut, for whatever reason; layers and layers of paint on the surrounding frame may have inadvertently sealed them; or the wood of either the frame or the sash may have swollen due to water damage or age. Many century-old homes in your area still have the old weight-and-rope-pulley system which assists in smooth lifting of the windows; if the pulley and rope are disconnected, the window is that much harder to lift. With all of these factors in mind, closely survey all of the stuck windows from the inside and outside. Look at the gap between the window and the frame; is there material like paint or silicone caulk joining the two? Insert a wide-bladed putty knife into the sealed section and gently wiggle back and forth to loosen the connection. You may need to do this around the entire window where it meets the frame. If the material is silicone-based caulk, removing it can be difficult. Check at your local home improvement store for a caulk remover, rather than trying to cut or chip it away from the wood. Once you’ve loosened up all the visibly sealed areas, if the window still won’t open, bring in the muscle. From the outside of the window (if possible), insert a pry bar under the sash. Place a small block of wood on the window ledge to use as leverage and to protect the window surface. Slowly apply pressure to the pry bar to lift the window, being careful not to damage the sash. Another method to try is to place a two-by-four against the

sash, then tap the board with a hammer to try and loosen the window. Once the window is unstuck, lift it and remove or fold out the lower window to inspect it. Check for swollen or weak wood in the window and the frame, which indicates the window may need replacement. Built-up paint layers should be scraped down a layer or two and sanded (wear a filter mask and goggles for this).

If the windows simply need a bit of TLC and not replacement, once you’re done sanding and cleaning them, add weatherstripping along the sides of the frame and the bottom of the sash. In older homes, this inexpensive touch can noticeably lower your heating and cooling bills.

Got a tiny puncture in a window screen? Use an awl or pick to straighten out the screen strands, then dab a few coats of clear nail polish over the repair.

I take my own dog, “Riley,” out very early each morning, but at 11 years of age he’s gotten too old to go running with me. Still, it struck me today how many of my neighbors I’ve gotten to know just because we’re all fellow dog owners. Even if we don’t have long conversations, we all have commiserated over the chore of dragging ourselves out of bed early to walk our dogs, or chatted about how nice (or horrible) the weather is. I realized today that I’m acquainted with at least one person on every street that’s part of my running route.

DEAR RILEY’S MOM: That is a fantastic thought! I sometimes wonder about the friendships I might not have made if it weren’t for my pets. I also think that seeing the same owners and their dogs every day is great for the dog, as well. We stop to catch up on gossip and weather, and our dogs get a chance to catch up on ... well, whatever they learn from sniffing each other. At any rate, it’s a chance for both dogs and owners to socialize and stay friendly with the neighbors.

Don’t Remake Pets Into Children DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’m writing in regards to your recent column asking whether pets are more than just part of the family, and instead like another child. Some of your readers responded yes to that question. Like most pet owners, I have been very attached to our pets. However, I find the “pets as children” idea rather false as well as disrespectful to the animal. Animals should be accepted for what they are, not remade into children. Most dogs are intelligent, adult animals, and it is insulting to treat them like silly little children.

ANSWER: Peripheral vascular disease also goes by the name peripheral artery disease. Have you seen the TV ad where the young boy and his grandmother are walking through a store where there’s a display on peripheral artery disease? The boy asks his grandmother if she has it. It’s extremely common. It’s the leg’s equivalent of heart artery disease. Both have to do with arteries clogged with plaque -- a buildup of cholesterol, fat and other materials.

Sometimes an operation on the clogged artery is necessary. Often this can be done with a catheter that has a balloon tip. The catheter is threaded to the point of obstruction and inflated to open up the artery. Then a stent -- a metal device -- is placed to keep the artery dilated. The booklet on peripheral vascular disease gives the details

High blood pressure, a family history of this condition, a family history of heart disease, smoking, diabetes and increased cholesterol all contribute to it. The most important contributor is aging.

Treatment is similar to treatment for obstructed heart arteries. Affected people have to lower their cholesterol, lower their body weight, lower their blood pressure, stop smoking, control blood sugar and stay active by walking to the point of pain, resting and then continuing to walk. Doctors usually also must prescribe medicines to lower cholesterol and to facilitate the passage of blood through narrowed arteries.

“After I started treatment with Vibronic Energizer High Tech Energy System, I can walk, I can dance, I can sleep. I was a new person! Thank you.” - Helen W.

Pain on walking is the prominent symptom of this illness. The pain occurs because the working leg muscles aren’t getting enough blood. They complain by sending pain signals. Calf pain is common when the obstruction to blood flow is in a thigh artery. Stopping and resting relieves the pain.

The family doctor can detect peripheral artery disease by noting a decreased pulse at the ankle. Greater evidence is obtained by comparing ankle blood pressure to arm blood pressure. The two should be equal. If ankle pressure is lower than arm pressure, the reason is a blockage in leg artery blood flow.

They have a place in the management of some illnesses. Limbrel, for example, contains flavonoids. These compounds act as antioxidants, neutralizing the harmful byproducts of cell chemistry. They also soothe inflammation like swollen, achy arthritic joints. I like the way Limbrel is marketed. It’s available only through prescriptions and without a huge amount of hype. Summer Seashell Souvenirs Beautiful seashells are priceless, especially those that your kids handpick on a lazy day at a favorite shore this summer. Or maybe your family hit warm climates this past winter and you have some choice “keepers” from a special beach. As your collection grows, sort them, clean them and then make one of these simple seashell souvenirs suitable for saving!

Wind Chimes

Select a small seashell and glue it on the end of a 23-inch length of fishing line or twine. (If your shell has a large enough hole, thread the line through the hole and tie a knot instead.) Make several. When the glue is dry, arrange each line vertically in front of you with the shells on the bottom. Set an 8to 10-inch piece of driftwood, a small branch or a dowel across the top. Tie the loose ends of the lines around the driftwood and knot, making sure that when the shells dangle, they will touch each other when a gentle breeze blows.

well. “Peter was so wonderful to work with,” she told me. “We had such a great time with him on and off the screen. I will really miss him a lot.”

HOLLYWOOD -- We’ve received mail from devoted “All My Children” fans who don’t know how they’ll manage without the long-running soap. Cheer up! Word is that the wonderful Carol Burnett, a devoted “AMC” fan herself who appeared as Verla Grubbs in ‘83, ‘95 and 2005, will be in several episodes in September. In ‘83, Carol made the TV movie “Between Friends” with Elizabeth Taylor, and they arranged their shooting schedule around their favorite soaps (Carol’s was “AMC”; Liz’s was “General Hospital), and they watched them together. Liz appeared in “GH” leading up to and including the marriage of Luke and Laura, which was the highest-rated show in daytime TV history.

Those Hemsworth brothers are on fire, career-wise. Chris Hemsworth made a big splash with “Thor” and shot two films for MGM, which were delayed by money problems. Now, “Cabin in the Woods” is slated for Halloween, and the remake of “Red Dawn” has been delayed so MGM can update the film to the tune of $1 million. Hemsworth also will star in “The Avengers” with Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Jeremy Renner and Mark Ruffalo, due out in May 2012. Meanwhile, Liam Hemsworth, Miley Cyrus’ love interest on and off the screen in “The Last Song,” has “The Hunger Games” due out in March 2012 and is set to star in “AWOL.” These guys may come from Down Under, but they sure are on top now! Send letters to Tony Rizzo’s Hollywood, 8306 Wilshire Blvd., No. 362, Beverly Hills, CA 90211. (c) 2011 King Features Synd., Inc.

Or, intersperse several more shells on the length of fishing line or twine. Knot each one evenly in place and end with the final shell dangling.

Chic Decorator Shells

Display larger and self-standing shells on your windowsill, around your bathtub or in your garden. Conch shells make lovely miniplanters for potting plants, while clam and abalone shells can make interesting soap dishes.

Shell Jewelry

String a variety of shells with small holes in them on a chain or string to wear around your neck.

Shell Prints

On a newspaper-covered table, apply acrylic paints with a sponge brush to the outside of a flat shell, such as a scallop shell. Gently lay a plain cotton T-shirt, napkin or canvas tote bag over it. Press lightly with your fingers so that the paint is transferred onto the cloth. Remove from the shell to reveal the beautiful natural pattern. Add more paint to the shell for more prints. Or, paint additional shells in various sizes using contrasting colors to make a pleasing design. • Divorce rates are rising again. Think about it: It takes some confidence in the financial aspect of one’s life to file for divorce. There’s the house (Will it sell? Is there any money to divide up?), the prospect of paying alimony (Is there enough job security to make alimony possible?) and the division of assets. The emotional aspect should be included here: If it’s perceived that the bad financial times are over, maybe having a partner isn’t as important now. Even if the news were all bad, it’s still possible to live a secure and contented life in spite of the economic news. Your own money plan should continue as it has for the past few years. Your goal should be to spend as little as possible. Save every dollar you can, ideally in an interestbearing account, until you have your rainy day fund. You should know within $10 what your actual bills are each month. Keep credit-card debt low or nonexistent so you’re not spending money on interest and fees. Take care of your health, reduce stress and get exercise daily. Focus on friends and family, and look for free activities. Keep your vehicle in good shape to avoid expensive repairs. Until then there were no post offices in the colonies, so mail was typically left at inns and taverns. • On July 25, 1832, the first recorded railroad accident in U.S. history occurs when four people are thrown off a vacant car near Quincy, Mass. A cable on a vacant car snapped them off the train and over a 34-foot cliff. • On July 31, 1916, future racing legend Louise Smith, who will become the first woman inducted into the International Motorsports Hall of Fame, is born in Barnesville, Ga. In her first race, unaware that a checkered flag meant the finish line, Smith kept going when the race ended until someone threw out a red flag. • On July 28, 1932, President Hoover orders the U.S. Army under Gen. Douglas MacArthur to evict Bonus Marchers -a group of World War I veterans seeking cash payments for their veterans’ bonus certificates -- from Washington, D.C. MacArthur’s men set their camps on fire, and the veterans were driven from the city. • On July 29, 1958, the U.S. Congress passes legislation establishing the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, a civilian agency responsible for coordinating America’s activities in space. NASA was created in response to the Soviet Union’s Oct. 4, 1957 launch of its first satellite, Sputnik I. • On July 30, 1971, a mid-air collision between a Boeing 727 and a fighter jet in Japan kills 162 people. At 28,000 feet the Boeing suddenly encountered two military jets. One was flown by a student who had only a few hours of flying experience. Neither jet was equipped with radar. • On July 27, 1993, Boston Celtics star Reggie Lewis collapses and dies after suffering cardiac arrest while shooting baskets at Brandeis University in Boston. After previous cardiac arrhythmias, doctors had incorrectly assured him that he could continue to play. (c) 2011 King Features Synd., Inc.

Also, check the net pattern on the outside; it should be even and an overall tan-yellow color, not green or mottled. • You can remove berry stains from your fingers with lemon juice. Got berry juice on your tablecloth? Here’s E.B. of Mississippi’s suggestion: “Pour a generous amount of milk on the spot, let it soak for 15 minutes or more. Then soak in cold water with soap for an hour or more. Wash, rinse and dry.” • Soak raisins in cold water before chopping so that they won’t stick to your knife. • “Use lined-up celery ribs to create a base for your roast. This way, the juices move around more and the roast never sticks to the pan. I serve the celery with the roast, but you don’t have to if you don’t want to.” -- A.T. in Tennessee • Need to chill some drinks for a party fast? Pile on the ice, of course, then add the secret weapon: water. Icy water chills drinks quicker than placing them in ice alone. This got me to thinking: Who would be a perfect foil to play James’ wife? None other than Beth Littleford. I asked Beth what she thought of the idea, and she is on board, stating: “I’d love to play his wife. I’ve had a thing for James Spader for 25-plus years. Blame ‘Tuff Turf’ (and also Steff, the sexy, arrogant yuppie from “Pretty in Pink”). Then again, I’d happily play Dwight Schrute’s wife, Stanley Hudson’s wife or Phyllis Vance’s life partner.”

Q: I keep reading about there being a remake of “Red Dawn” in the works (with no release date in sight), and I wondered how stars of the original 1984 version felt about this? I have my doubts they’ll be able to pull it off -- the original is such a cult classic. -- Brandi R., Erie, Pa.

A: I spoke with Lea Thompson, who played Erica in the original movie, and she also is a little iffy about the remake. “I have my doubts, clearly,” she said, “because they haven’t released it yet although it’s supposedly been done for ages. I’ll be really interested to see it. One of the really amazing things about the original ‘Red Dawn’ is that there were no special effects in terms of computer-generated effects. Everything that happened really happened, which makes it more of a visceral nightmare. Sometimes some things left to the imagination are actually more haunting.” You can catch Lea starting July 30 in Hallmark Movie Channel’s “The Cabin,” where she plays a single mom who brings her kids to Scotland for fun and games, and for her,

“ALL PRO FLORIDA REALTY, INC” Advertorial (See ad on page 3) The rapid change in real estate market values is a true concern for every Floridian. As recent reports have shown, our state’s real estate market is one of the most affected by the economy turmoil. Some reports show Miami as being in the top 10, with Fort Myers and Port St. Lucie also having high-risk foreclosure factors. What’s in it for all of our homes and us? Based on the benefits of short sales vs. complete foreclosure, loan modifications are not working based on the fact that the value of properties are currently less than half of what is owed on these properties. Let’s take, for example, a property that has a $400,000 mortgage. Even if the bank reduces the interest rates and payments by $200 to $300 a month, the actual market value will be only about $150,000 to $200,000. So even if you take a rate of 10% a year, which is unlikely, it would still take 10 to 15 years before the market value is $400,000 again. This is precisely why most people are not modifying their mortgages and have been resorting to short sales. Tim McCarthy, from All Pro Florida Realty can narrow your options down. There are many options available and he will help you find the best one for your particular real estate scenario.

A short sale agreement is sometimes offered to homeowners who have defaulted on their mortgage and are facing foreclosure. This type of real estate transaction allows the borrower to sell their home for less than is owed on their note and walk away from the property without causing extensive damage to their credit history (Volkov, 2010). Tim McCarthy, from All Pro Florida Inc. is a native of South Florida and a licensed Realtor and Mortgage Broker since 1993 as well as a cash investor for the past 30 years. He has become a short sale and foreclosure expert in this market, based on the fact that the loan modifications are not working for people, and the banks would rather work with short sales than foreclose on the properties. He has bought, sold and refinanced in excess of $400 million USD in Real Estate and is looking to work with local charities by donating a percentage of his commissions.
