A STORY IS BORN by T.A. Tafoya How do authors come up with the ideas for their books? Here’s a fun look at a few popular children’s classics and how they were conceived. •“Where the Wild Things Are” began with something else in the place of “Things.” Maurice Sendak, a young storybook artist, originally wrote a children’s story called “Where the Wild Horses Are.” The only problem with this title was he couldn’t draw horses. In 1963, Sendak changed “Horses” to “Things” in favor of monsters. He based these monsters on his scary Brooklyn relatives that he didn’t like as a child.

• Sendak said of those relatives, “I remember how inept they were at making small talk with children. There you’d be, totally helpless, while they cooed over you and pinched your cheeks. Or they’d lean way over with their bad teeth and hairy noses, and say something threatening like, ‘You’re so cute I could eat you up.’ And I knew if my mother didn’t hurry up with the cooking, they probably would.” • Curious about “Curious George”? Author Hans Augusto Rey grew up in Hamburg, Germany. His favorite thing to do as a child was to visit the zoo. As an adult, he began writing children’s stories filled with the exotic animals from his past. turn the page for more!

A STORY IS BORN (continued): • In 1940, Rey and his wife fled from the Nazi invasion of Paris. They were caught escaping on their bicycles and arrested as spies. An officer searching their belongings found the unpublished manuscript of “Curious George,” and after reading it, he let the Rey’s go, saying no spy could write such a wonderful story. • A.A. Milne gave his son Christopher Robin a stuffed bear for his first birthday in 1921. He named the bear Winnie the Pooh after Winnie, a real bear at the London Zoo. As his son grew up, Milne made up bedtime stories about adventures his son had with his Teddy Bear. A friend and editor of a children’s magazine thought they were so charming, he suggested publishing them. “Winnie-the-Pooh” was published in 1926. • E.B. White based “Charlotte’s Web” on his own experiences at his farm in Maine. White said, “One day when I was on my way to feed the pig, I began feeling sorry for the animal because, like most pigs, he was doomed to die. This made me sad. So I started thinking of ways to save a pig’s life. In the barn I had been watching a big, gray spider at her work and was impressed by how clever she was weaving her web. Gradually I worked the spider into the story, a story of friendship and salvation on the farm.” • In 1939, Ludwig Bemelman wrote the first “Madeline” book in Pete’s Tavern in New York City using the backs of the tavern’s menus as writing paper. The story was based on his mother’s life as a young girl in Bavaria and his memories as the smallest boy in boarding school. He named the main character after his wife Madeline. • In 1941, during lunch with a publisher in New York, a

For Christmas in 1864 he gave Alice a handwritten copy of the manuscript entitled “Alice’s Adventures Under Ground,” dedicating it as “a Christmas gift to a dear child in memory of a summer’s day.” The book was published in 1865. • In 1990, while on a crowded train from Manchester to London, the idea for Harry Potter suddenly “fell into her head,” says author Joanne Kathleen Rowling. Rowling sent her manuscript “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” to several prospective agents in 1995. After eight rejections by publishers, an offer came in but with one suggestion — that she change her pen name to a more gender-neutral name to address the fear that males in the targeted age • While attending Dartmouth College from 1921 to 1925, group wouldn’t be interested in reading a novel written Theodor Suise Geisel became editor-in-chief of the Jack- by a woman. OVERCOMING THE ODDS:

CHILDREN OF WAR The United Nations was established after World War II in hopes of creating peaceful resolutions to conflicts between nations. In spite of this effort, between 1945 and 1992 alone, there were 149 major wars around the world, killing more than 23 million people. • Some of the greatest casualties of all wars are children. They are innocent victims who have little choice but to experience the same horrors as their parents.

• Children of war are often separated from their families, driven from their homes, left orphaned, killed, maimed, sexually abused or exploited into becoming child soldiers.

• In times of war, more children die from starvation and sickness than from bullets and bombs. Those who do survive are often traumatized from the violence and brutality they witness. Many generations of young people are emotionally affected for the rest of their lives.

• According to Unicef, during the last decade, it is estimated that child victims have included: two million killed; four to five million disabled; 12 million left homeless; more than one million orphaned or separated from their parents; and some 10 million psychologically traumatized.

• One increasing tragedy of war is the use of young children as soldiers. Children are used because they are more expendable and easier to intimidate into doing what they are told. Some children are forced to join military groups as a means of survival because they are provided needed food, clothing and protection, or they are recruited using threats of harm to their person or their family. • There are children who will fight willingly and do so for varied reasons. They may fight to avenge the death of parents and families or like adults, they too may see themselves fighting for social justice or religious beliefs. Whole generations of children have grown up surrounded by violence as an everyday occurrence. This becomes their way of life. • To attempt to end the exploitation of children as solders, the United Nations, in partnership with Unicef, the Special Representative on Violence Against Children and the office for the High Commission of Human Rights, launched a campaign called Zero Under 18, which seeks to end the recruitment and use of child solders. • The organization’s goal is to achieve universal ratification of the Optional Protocol by the year 2012. This Optional Protocol is to enforce among all nations that no child under the age of 18 can participate in hostilities; no child can be forced to serve the national military or irregular armies; and that former child solders will be assisted by governments in finding a new existence after a life of violence, distress and alienation. • Universal ratification means that the world has succeeded in standing together by publicly declaring the end of this inhumane occurrence. Already, 132 countries have signed on to this promise; 53 others have not. These 53 countries are listed on an international List of Shame available at the campaign’s website at www.zerounder18.org. Sanctions have been proposed against these countries that continue to recruit and use children in armed conflict. • The Human Rights Watch estimates that right now, 200,000 to 300,000 children are serving as soldiers for both rebel groups and government forces in armed conflicts.

HEROES OF 9/11 • There were many heroes in the terrible aftermath of September 11, 2001. A special group of those heroes were canines. Dogs of many breeds worked at Ground Zero, helping to search for survivors and offering their magical gift of therapy. • More than 350 dog and handler teams came from all over the United States and Canada to help in search and rescue efforts at the World Trade Center and Pentagon. These teams were from disaster-management agencies, police agencies and private search-and-rescue groups. • Omar Rivera and Michael Hingson were inside the World Trade Center along with their guide dogs Salty and Roselle. Both men are blind, but when the plane hit Tower One, the guide dogs knew what to do. Through the panic and commotion of thousands of fleeing people, these two heroic yellow labradors, guided their masters down the stairwell and safely out of the building minutes before the tower collapsed. • The first dog on the scene of the disaster was a golden retriever named Bear. Twelve-year-old Bear warmed the hearts of rescue workers amid the tragedy. Bear worked exhausting 18-hour days searching for survivors and victims, sometimes being hoisted into sunken pockets of rubble, glass and metal to look for bodies. Although he found no survivors, Bear located many bodies, including that of NYFD Chief Peter J. Ganci Jr. Bear died just before his 13th birthday from an illness related to the toxic

environment of Ground Zero. He is hailed as a hero. • Only one working dog was killed by the attack on the World Trade Center, a yellow labrador name Sirius. Sirius was a bomb detection dog. He was trained to search incoming vehicles for explosives. When the planes hit, he was in his cage in the basement of the North Tower. His partner, Officer David Lim, was unharmed and helped in rescue efforts. Sirius was honored at a memorial service by the Port Authority. Over 300 people attended the ceremony. • The tiniest search dog at the World Trade Center was from Seattle. Weighing only 18 pounds, Ricky, a rat terrier, searched the rubble for 10 days, going where bigger dogs could not. Ricky trained with the Puget Sound Urban Search and Rescue for over two years. • Servus, a Belgian malinois police dog, fell into an elevator shaft while searching Ground Zero and nearly died. His handler Chris Christensen pulled Servus’ limp body from the ruins. Within minutes, firemen and rescue workers were there to help. A nurse suctioned the thick ash from his lungs, gave him IV fluids, then rushed him to the canine medical facilities. After several hours of treatment, he was released. Like a trooper, he jumped into the nearest police car used to transport dogs to the site. • The dogs of 9/11 not only assisted in search and rescue but also served as therapy dogs. They were of every imaginable shape, size and breed. These dogs provided solace and comfort to the many rescue workers, grieving family members and desperate firefighters that were forever changed by that day.

Bad Decisions Legend has it that a reporter asked a senator how it was that he was so successful, and the man replied by saying “good decisions.” How do you make good decisions? “Experience,” was the reply. And how does one gain such experience? “Bad decisions.” I’ve never won an office pool or fantasy league in my life. I’m a joke at the sports book in Caesar’s Palace. And with that, I bring you this year’s roundup of bad decisions as they pertain to the NFL. NFC EAST Prediction: Eagles, Giants (wild card), Cowboys, Redskins Vegas: Eagles The Eagles just have too much firepower, and QB Michael Vick is the league’s MVP. The Cowboys have an enigma at QB with Tony Romo, and the Giants, despite key offseason losses, have depth and a great coaching staff. NFC NORTH Prediction: Packers, Bears, Lions, Vikings Vegas: Packers I believe in QB Joe Flacco. The Steelers are the easy bet, but Hard not to pick the Packers here -- they still have the most I’m wondering if they can’t be beat by a few outer-fringe talented team in the NFC. But it’s a tall order to repeat in the teams this season. NFL. As far as the Lions go ... prove it, Matt Stafford. AFC SOUTH Prediction: Texans, Colts, Titans, Jags Vegas: Colts This pick means I believe Peyton Manning will be hurt for longer than anticipated. AFC WEST Prediction: Chiefs, Chargers (wild card), Broncos, Raiders Vegas: Chargers The Chiefs have a killer running back in Jamal Charles, a good quarterback in Matt Cassell and a young, aggressive defense. This will surprise a lot of people. That said, the Chargers are probably better. Oh, well. NFC CHAMP: Eagles AFC CHAMP: Jets SUPER BOWL CHAMP: Jets VEGAS LINE: Patriots over Packers I’m going to believe the hype and take Rex Ryan for the win. It makes for a good story, anyway. NFC SOUTH Prediction: Saints, Falcons (wild card), Panthers, Bucs Vegas: Saints The Saints are fired up, and with the shortened preseason their experience and QB Drew Brees’ attention to the playbook makes them a nice bet. The Falcons are hungry and aggressive. I wouldn’t be shocked to see either in the Super Bowl. NFC WEST Prediction: Cardinals, Rams, 49ers, Seahawks Vegas: Rams The Rams seem too young for me to feel comfortable betting on them. I’ll take QB Kevin Kolb and expectations of consistency from the Cardinals. AFC EAST Prediction: Patriots, Jets (wild card), Bills, Dolphins Vegas: Patriots The Jets may win 12 games. So what? The Patriots might win 16. This will be hashed out in the playoffs. AFC NORTH Prediction: Ravens, Steelers, Browns, Bengals Vegas: Steelers

This reaction to gluten is a genetic disorder called glutensensitive enteropathy, celiac disease or gluten intolerance. Symptoms can be different from person to person and can be confused with symptoms of other health problems. People of any age can develop gluten intolerance, but the disease usually is diagnosed in adults, about 10 years after symptoms first appear.

This recipe for Mocha Chocolate Brownies is a modern version of a family favorite using gluten-free convenience ingredients.

“Gluten-free” is a term now appearing on food labels and often mentioned in health articles, but many people don’t know what gluten is or why finding a gluten-free product is so important for some shoppers. My daughter, Deanna, was recently diagnosed as being gluten intolerant. Since she loves bread and pasta, this news was a big adjustment for her. I try to plan family meals with her condition in mind. Educating yourself about gluten is one of the best ways to make the correct food choices. Gluten is a protein found in the grains wheat, rye and barley. Oats also may contain gluten due to crosscontamination, which means they have come into contact with gluten during processing. When baking, gluten helps give structure, texture and strength to baked foods, such as bread.

If you are looking for gluten-free foods, start by reading the ingredients list on food labels to determine if they are gluten-free - or made without gluten. Identifying gluten-free products involves more than just looking for the words wheat, rye, barley, oats or buckwheat. Wheat also might be called durum, farina or semolina; gluten also can be found in additives, seasonings and flavorings. And a food originally gluten-free can come into contact with equipment contaminated with gluten or might be processed in an area that contains gluten. Finding gluten-free foods may seem like an

Heat oven to 350 F. Spray bottom only of 8-inch square pan with cooking spray. Place cereal in resealable foodstorage plastic bag; seal bag and crush with rolling pin to make about 1 1/2 cups. 2. In medium bowl, mix cereal, brown sugar and baking soda; stir in 1/4 cup melted butter until well-mixed. Reserve 1/3 cup cereal mixture for topping. Press remaining cereal mixture evenly in bottom of pan. Bake 5 minutes. Cool 5 minutes. 3. Meanwhile, in medium bowl, stir brownie mix, 1/4 cup melted butter, brown sugar, vanilla, instant coffee, sugar and eggs until well-blended. Drop batter by small spoonfuls over baked layer. Carefully spread over baked layer; sprinkle with reserved 1/3 cup cereal mixture. 4. Bake 30 to 34 minutes or until brownies look dry and set. (Brownies will be soft; do not use toothpick test). Cool completely, about 1 1/2 hours. Cut into 4 rows by 4 rows. Store tightly covered. (Recipe variation based on one from Chex.com. Know the Signs of Heart Valve Trouble DEAR DR. DONOHUE: For the past five years I have known that I have aortic stenosis. I have no symptoms and no restrictions on what I do. My doctor says I need no treatment. I’m happy about that. Will I have a shortened life? I’m 55. --- S.B. ANSWER: “Stenosis” indicates narrowing. The aortic valve closes when the heart pumps blood out and into the aorta and the entire body. Closure of the valve stops blood from leaking back into the heart. Because the valve and its opening have constricted, the heart has to pump harder to empty itself. That strains the heart, and, in time, leads to heart failure. Stenosis is relative. Its danger and its consequences depend on how narrow are the opening and valve. Doctors can get an accurate picture of the valve’s dimensions through an echocardiogram, a sound wave picture of the heart. When the valve and its opening reach a critical size, decisions are made about the best treatment. Often, it’s surgery with the installation of an artificial valve.

If a severely narrowed valve goes untreated, three symptoms -- R.C. develop: chest pain on activity (angina), shortness of breath and fainting spells. Death occurs within three or fewer ANSWER: Have the surgery. You have had three attacks years unless a new valve is put in place. Surgery is usually of gallbladder pain; you’re bound to have more. You won’t find the surgery as frightening as you imagine. Often, it is done through small incisions with the guidance of a scope. The body does quite well without a gallbladder. It’s a reservoir for bile, which is made in the liver. When a person eats a meal that has fat in it, as most meals do, the gallbladder contracts, sending a jet of bile into the digestive tract to promote fat digestion. Without a gallbladder for storage, bile drips into the digestive tract on a constant basis; that works out well.

You probably wonder how you acquired the valve problem. You might have been born with a valve that had minor defects, which promoted narrowing. Calcifications could have settled on the valve. Or you might have had rheumatic fever as a child, which caused valve deformity. The booklet on heart-valve disorders gives a comprehensive view on these valves and their treatment. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 105W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I have had three attacks of gallbladder pain due to gallstones. My doctor is pushing me to have my gallbladder removed. The prospect of surgery doesn’t thrill me. Can’t these stones be treated in some other way? How does my body function without a gallbladder?

Below is a chart illustrating the time periods in the preforeclosure and foreclosure process in Florida.

PRE-FORECLOSURE TIMELINE

UNDERSTANDING THE FORECLOSURE PROCESS We all regularly hear about the “foreclosure crisis” going on in our country but what you may not know is that the situation in Florida is far worse than in any other state. According to the latest statistics released by the Mortgage Banker’s Association, Florida accounts for 23.7% of all foreclosures nationwide; which correlates to 466,454 homes. Not only is this the largest number of any other state, it is larger than the total number of loans in 22 other states combined. The result is our courts are backed up with a case load of 260,185 cases. Couple that with the termination of special court funding for foreclosure cases which took effect on July 1st and it appears the crisis in Florida is only getting worse. So how did this backlog swell to such an enormous figure? Why does it take so long for a bank to foreclose? This was not always the case, right? Well, we know that before Wall Street started selling shares of stocks in pools of mortgages through a process known as securitization, foreclosures could be handled within a few months. Now, in great part due to the banks’ rush to profit and lack of proper simple documentation required in any real estate or mortgage transfer, as well as the lack of complicated documentation required as a result of the securitization process, no one knows how long some cases will take because in many instances no one can properly prove who is entitled to foreclose. Like every other plaintiff in any civil lawsuit, the plaintiff has the burden to prove all elements of their case by a “preponderance” or greater weight of the evidence. In a foreclosure action, the entity entitled to foreclose must successfully prove by this standard, among other things, that they are the proper party; the entity or person actually entitled to receive payments due under the terms of the note; and/or the party entitled to foreclose. This is generally referred to as “legal standing” and often, the banks cannot prove they have it.

Day 1 – Payment due, no payment made Day 7-10 – Call from lender/mortgage servicer Day 16 – Late charges begin to accrue Day 20-25 – Call and letter from lender/mortgage servicer Day 30 – Default reported to credit bureaus and lender/ mortgage servicer sends second letter Day 40 – Lender/mortgage servicer sends letter with payment options

Day 60 – Lender/mortgage servicer sends demand letter or “acceleration notice,” credit bureaus update their reports Day 90 – Lender/mortgage servicer sends file to attorney, credit bureaus update their reports. Day 90+ - Any time after 90 days the entity claiming their entitlement to foreclose can file suit. In a scenario in which the entity seeking to foreclose is not the same entity as the original mortgagee or lender, and with competent counsel, this process alone can take more than 12 months.

FORECLOSURE TIMELINE

Day 1 - Complaint and Lis Pendens are filed and served with a summons on the property owner. Day 20 – A responsive pleading is due. If not filed, plaintiff moves for default judgment. With competent legal counsel, there can be a multitude of legitimate issues raised via motions, hearings, and discovery requests which would extend this time period greatly. Day 45 – 60 (if unrepresented by competent counsel) -

For Advertising Information Call 954-667-3237

Court schedules hearing for default judgment and at the hearing enters final judgment of foreclosure. By statute, the court should order the sale of the property on a specified day within 20-35 days of the order. However, sales can still lawfully take place later than 35 days and are sometimes taking many months after the order is entered. Day 80 – 95 (if unrepresented by competent counsel) – Notice of sale published once a week for two consecutive weeks in local publication, with last posting at least 5 days prior to sale; auction sale conducted; winning bidder applies 5% deposit from funds advanced electronically prior to sale and then pays the rest by noon the following day. Dade, Broward and Palm-Beach Counties conduct their auctions online. Certificate of sale is filed “promptly” after sale and right of redemption ends when certificate of sale is filed. Day 105 (if unrepresented by competent counsel) – Ten days after filing certificate of sale, certificate of title is issued – title vests, no further action necessary unless property is still occupied. Day 106 -119 (if unrepresented by competent counsel) – 1 -14 days after certificate of title issues, if property still occupied, sheriff posts a notice to vacate/writ of possession. Day 119 – 140(if unrepresented by competent counsel) – 1 – 21 days after notice to vacate, sheriff vacates the property. If, on the other hand, the entity seeking to foreclose is not the same entity as the original mortgagee or lender, and the owner has retained competent counsel, this process can take years, if the bank is ever able to foreclose… The above is just an overview to help understand the current state of the foreclosure process. Dog Eats Nonstop DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Why does my dog, ÒJack,Ó eat nonstop? If I don’t hide his food, he will eat it all. He’s even broken into the pantry where I kept his dog food and torn the bag open to get at it. Is there something wrong with him? -- Kerrie J., via e-mail

• On Sept. 26, 1957, “West Side Story,” composed by Leonard Bernstein, opens at the Winter Garden Theatre on Broadway. “West Side Story,” a reinterpretation of William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, tells the tale of a love affair between Tony, who is Polish American, and Maria, a Puerto Rican, set against an urban background of interracial warfare.

DEAR KERRIE: It’s always wise to check with your veterinarian if your pet’s behavior is worrisome to you. If Jack only recently started eating nonstop, tell the vet about this behavioral change. He or she may want to take a look at Jack to rule out any possible health issues.

• On Sept. 29, 1969, the U.S. Army drops murder charges against eight Special Forces soldiers accused of killing a Vietnamese national. The case against the Green Berets was dismissed for reasons of national security when the CIA refused to release highly classified information.

Many dog owners, however, find it necessary to hide the dog food and store any easy-to-open people food on high shelves where their dog can’t reach. This is because many dogs will eat everything in sight for as long as they can, way past the point of being full. This doesn’t just put them at risk of obesity, it puts them at risk of bloat, a condition that can be fatal.

• On Oct. 2, 1985, Rock Hudson, a Hollywood romantic leading man during the 1950s and ‘60s and later a TV star, dies at the age of 59 from an AIDS-related illness. The 6-foot-5 Hudson rose to fame starring in such films as “Giant” (1956), for which he received an Academy Award nomination.

HOLLYWOOD -- Doris Day is back. The tabloids couldn’t wait to scream headlines that “Doris Day is broke!” and “Doris Day makes a comeback at 86 because she has to!” Nothing could be further from the truth. The truth is, Doris was approached by Sony to allow it to release tracks she recorded back in 1985. At first she declined, but when she heard the totally re-mastered tracks, she reconsidered. She decided to move forward with the project as a tribute to her late son, Terry Melcher, who died in 2004 from cancer. The Beach Boys’ Bruce Johnston worked with Terry on producing the tracks, which include “Life Is Just a Bowl of Cherries,” “You Are So Beautiful,” “Disney Girls” and “I’ll See You In My Dreams.” Doris is still among the alltime top-10-grossing actresses in film and was Oscarnominated for “Pillow Talk” (1959), in which she starred with her friend Rock Hudson. Doris often has been mentioned for an honorary Oscar, but has refused to agree to accept the award on the show. Now that she’s posed for photos to accompany the new album, called “My Heart,” maybe it will lead to recording a new album and appearing in public again. She currently lives in Carmel-by-the-Sea, California. *** Jennifer Aniston will direct and star in “The Goree Girls,” a musical drama set in the early 1940s. Based

Aniston will unveil her singing pipes in the film. *** Can you believe a remake of the classic 1964 Audrey Hepburn/Rex Harrison film “My Fair Lady”? Originally, Keira Knightly was to star, but she’s out in favor of the new “it girl,” Carey Mulligan. The screenplay, by Oscar-winning “Sense and Sensibility” screenwriter Emma Thompson, is an update that will reveal more of Eliza Doolittle’s past. Why Carey Mulligan as Eliza? She was Oscar nominated for “An Education” (2009), has “Drive” with Ryan Gosling making the film-fest rounds, and just completed “Shame” with Michael Fassbender. Mulligan is now shooting “The Great Gatsby,” in 3D, in Sydney, Australia. She plays Daisy Buchanan to Leonardo Di Caprio”s Jay Gatsby (in 1974 it was Mia Farrow and Robert Redford). Directed by “Moulin Rouge’s” Baz Luhrmann, the film also stars Tobey Maguire. “My Fair Lady” won eight Oscars, including best actor and best picture. Why remake it? If the new version doesn’t measure up, will they rename it “My Spare Lady.” Send letters to Tony Rizzo’s Hollywood, 8306 Wilshire Blvd., No. 362, Beverly Hills, CA 90211. by Samantha Weaver • It was 20th-century American humorist Evan Esar who made the following extremely sage observation: ‘Anger is the feeling that makes your mouth work faster than your mind.’ • The Ghirardelli company, now renowned worldwide for the fine chocolate it produces, originally was a purveyor of mustard and spices. • Frank Lloyd Wright was an unusually prolific architect. During the 70 years of his professional career, he designed a whopping 500 buildings. • Unless you’re employed in the publishing field, you might think that a typographical error is rather insignificant, something that only nitpickers worry about. Typos, however, sometimes radically change the meaning of text. Take, for example, the 1631 edition of the Bible published by the royal printers in London. A word was left out of one of the Ten Commandments, resulting in the exhortation, ‘Thou shalt commit adultery.’ This book is now known as the Wicked Bible or the Adulterous Bible. Robert Barker and Martin Lucas, the publishers responsible for the error, were fined 300 British pounds, or about $54,000 in today’s currency. • In 1826, the eastern part of Texas declared its independence from the United States, calling itself the Republic of Fredonia. • You might be surprised to learn that author Norman Mailer, best known for his novel ‘The Naked and the Dead,’ majored in aeronautical engineering when he was in college. • If you’re an arachnophobe, you may not want to read the following tidbit: There are some species of spider that dine on fish -- and catch them, too. • For reasons surpassing understanding, in 1845, the city of Boston made it mandatory to have a doctor’s prescription before taking a bath. *** Thought for the Day: ‘A man has to live with himself, and he should see to it that he always has good company.’ -- Charles

Insurance Inventory The best time to do an insurance inventory is before trouble strikes, and the best place to store your inventory list is somewhere other than your home. Should you have a claim, photos and written documentation are your best evidence of property you own. PHOTOS: If you have a digital camera, your task will be made easier if you buy an additional memory card. Take all your photos with that memory card in the camera, and then store the card in a bank box or another safe place. If you have a film camera, you’ll need to print out your photos and store those. There are two steps to taking insurance photos: what easily can be seen, and what’s hidden. Stand in the middle of each room and take photos in a circle around you. That’s the easy part. The next step involves opening closet doors and drawers and taking pictures of the contents. Your best bet is to have the camera set on the largest photo it will take, often larger than 3000 by 2000 pixels. The reason is that you’ll be able to take photos of the back of electronics, such as televisions and stereos, or the bottom of collectibles such as china, and have the model and serial numbers available when you blow up the photo. Don’t forget to inventory the contents of your garage or attic, as well as any sheds on your property. Photograph the exterior of your home and your vehicles. Another method is to use a video camera, but be sure your aim is steady. Still photos are preferable, as studying each

PAPER: Print out online (or get from your insurance agent) an inventory form to jog your memory about what you own and need to document. List each item. Receipts are likely stored with your warranty information, but you’ll need them for any claims of loss. Receipts will show the date of purchase as well as the cost. Keep everything in a bank box or another safe location: A copy of the memory card with your inventory photos (or the photos themselves), copy of insurance policies and your paper inventories. Corn, Black Bean and Rice Burritos

By Samantha Mazzotta

Toilet’s Antics Drive Wife Mad Q: The toilet in our master bedroom, for no reason I can explain, will randomly start running for a few minutes and then stop again. Of course, it is accompanied each time by a faint hissing sound as the water flows into the tank and then a “clunk” when it stops. At night, this is incredibly annoying. My wife wants it fixed ASAP. Is this something that can be fixed quickly, or do I need to call a plumber? -Hoyt C., Vero Beach, Fla. A: There’s a good chance you can fix this yourself. What’s happening is that water is silently trickling from the upper tank into the toilet bowl. When the water level of the tank drops to a certain point (below the range of the float ball or indicator), the inlet valve at the bottom of the tank opens up and the tank refills. Once the water level rises and returns the float ball or indicator to its top position, the valve closes and the water stops. Often you’ll hear a “clunk” or chain rattle as this happens. To verify a slow leak, mark the water level at its highest point (right after it finishes refilling from a flush) with a crayon, then close the inlet valve under the tank. Come back in a half hour to an hour to see if the water level has fallen. Next, try to locate the cause of the leak. If there’s no water on the floor (indicating bad seals or a cracked tank -- a definite contact-the-plumber sign) then the flapper valve -the big valve in the center of the tank that dumps water into the bowl with each flush -- is the likely culprit. The problem could be as simple as a misaligned flapper valve. This is most commonly caused by a lift chain or lift arm that is too long or too short. (The lift chain or arm literally lifts the flapper valve up when you push the flush handle -- try it now and see.) Adjust the chain by placing the connecting hook (the hook that attaches the chain to the upper lift arm) into a different rung of the chain. Adjust a vertical lift arm by either slightly bending or straightening the arm.
