FORMER OCCUPATIONS by Kathy Wolfe
Even famous people had to start somewhere, as you’ll soon see. This week, Tidbits has researched some of their early jobs — before the famous became famous. • After being expelled from high school for riding his motorcycle through the halls, actor Marlon Brando was enrolled in military school, which resulted in another expulsion some months later. He went to work as a ditch digger, which he followed up with a position as an elevator operator in a New York City department store. Next came a stint as a night watchman before he finally entered acting school.

He labored as a lumberjack, lifeguard, golf caddy, aircraft factory worker, steel mill employee and gas station attendant. At one point, he was cleaning swimming pools by day and auditioning for bit parts by night. He was nearly 30 by the time he got his breakthrough part as Rowdy Yates in the CBS series “Rawhide.”

As a young man, he was a Baptist minister and the youngest president ever of the Arkansas Southern State convention for that denomination. At 41, he was elected governor of Arkansas, becoming one of America’s youngest governors. Huckabee moved on to become a presidential candidate in the 2008 election and has written two books since that time. Goldberg enjoyed the job because her clients, “never complained about how they looked.” • That “wild and crazy guy” Steve Martin’s first job was selling concessions at Disneyland before he advanced to performing magic tricks, juggling and creating balloon animals at the park. He attended UCLA, majoring in philosophy and theater, before becoming a writer for variety entertainers such as Glen Campbell, the Smothers Brothers, Dick van Dyke and Sonny & Cher. ANTHONY ROBLES If you don’t follow the sport of wrestling, you may not be familiar with the name Anthony Robles. Let Tidbits bring you up to date on the feats of this remarkable young man who has refused to allow a disability to defeat him. • Anthony Robles entered the world in 1988 with only one leg, his right leg missing all the way to the hip. While such a disability might hinder the activity of an ordinary child, there was nothing ordinary about Anthony. At age 3, he was fitted with a prosthetic leg, but he was so annoyed with the time spent putting it on and taking if off that he abandoned it a few years later and started using crutches or merely hopping. He learned to ride a bike at age 5. At a young age, he began concentrating on exercises that would strengthen the rest of his body and in sixth grade, was his school’s record-holder for the most pushups. Amazingly, at

age 14, he played defensive tackle for his Mesa, Arizona, junior high football team. • It was on the wrestling mat, however, that Robles finally realized his true calling. While in eighth grade, after watching an older cousin at team practice, Robles knew he wanted to give the sport a try. By the time he graduated high school, he had a 129-15 record, garnering perfect 48-0 seasons both his junior and senior years, and was one of the top high school wrestlers in the nation. He had served two years as team captain and achieved a wrestling letter three times. • Robles’ rookie year at Arizona State yielded a national rank, just shy of All-American standing. The next year, he nabbed the All-American status and won the Pac 10 Conference Championship, feats he repeated the following year. He was undefeated his senior year with the Sun Devils, finishing 36-0, as well as winning the 2001 NCAA Division Championship in his weight class. • Robles never expected preferential treatment of any kind. After one particularly poor performance by the team, the coach’s discipline required each wrestler to run laps while carrying a 20-pound sandbag. Although Robles was not expected to participate, he dropped his crutches, grabbed a sandbag, and began to hop around the track. Fall after fall did not deter him from hopping the entire time the team was on the track. In the coach’s words, “I had to turn away. It was hard to watch, but at the same time, it was one of the most inspiring things you could imagine.” • Robles’ unusual technique includes immediately dropping to the mat at the beginning of the match, making his opponent “get low” with him. His “ball and chain” move involves grabbing his foe’s wrist with one hand and pulling that arm through the opponent’s legs, followed by grabbing the elbow with his other hand. • Robles “runs” the mile on crutches, a feat he can complete in eight minutes. Because of his phenomenal upper body strength, he can bench press nearly three times his weight. • Robles’ ambition is to become a motivational speaker, ministering to those with similar handicaps. His mother sums up his disability, “It’s something that was just meant to be, and now we see it as a blessing.”

Repairing Damaged Drywall Q: Last week while moving furniture, my sons accidentally shoved an end table against the wall and punched a hole in it. How can I fix this? -- Charity in Lansing, Mich. A: Ouch! Fortunately, drywall holes are not too expensive a proposition in terms of repair. You can even get your sons to help, turning an accident into a learning experience. For supplies, you’ll need a power drill (for driving screws), a putty knife, a drywall/wallboard saw, a box cutter or drywall knife, drywall tape (a type of mesh tape), a drywall repair patch (a large, self-sticking mesh that can be cut to fit), drywall compound, sandpaper and matching paint. If the hole is pretty large -- more than a couple of inches in diameter -- you will need a spare sheet or piece of drywall (also called wallboard in some places), as well as scraps of plywood and drywall screws.
MONEY MINUTIAE Keep the change! This week, we’re talking about the changes that U.S. currency has undergone since it was first issued in the 17th century. • America has had paper money since before it was even a nation. The Massachusetts Bay Colony issued it first in 1690. In 1775, in the midst of the Revolutionary War, paper currency was issued to finance the conflict, with the anticipation of tax revenues to cover it. The paper notes soon devalued, due to a lack of strong financial backing and the ease of counterfeiting. • Beginning in 1877, all U.S. currency was printed by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, an agency of the Treasury Department. The bills were 25 percent larger than present-day money. In 1929, the size was reduced, and all bills conformed to the style of having a portrait on the front and a monument on the back. • Can you name the individuals on the front and the item on the back of each denomination of currency? Of course, you know Washington is on the $1 bill, but did you know that the Great Seal of the United States is on the back? Lincoln is on the front of the $5 bill, with the Lincoln Memorial on the back. The $10 bill features the portrait of Alexander Hamilton, the first Secretary of the Treasury, with the U.S. Treasury Building on the flip side. Seventh President Andrew Jackson’s face graces the front of the $20 bill, with the White House featured on the back. Civil War general and

They spit out about 10,000 sheets of currency per hour. • We call it “paper money,” but it’s actually made of 75 percent cotton and 25 percent linen, not like regular paper, which uses wood pulp. Because of its durability, a bill can be double-folded (first forward, then backward) 4,000 times before it will tear. • Currency began a redesign process in 2003 to make it more difficult to counterfeit. Background colors and watermarks were added, as well as a 3-D security thread that glows under an ultraviolet light.

DISH Network delivers more of what you want for less than you’d expect. Packages starting at: • A Tip From JoAnn: I like bottled water, but it’s expensive and creates a lot of waste. I have plenty of reusable bottles, but bottled water always seemed more convenient and, frankly, better. I found that what I really like is to take a bottle of very cold water out of the fridge and drink it, so instead of storing those reusable bottles in the cabinet, I fill them straight from the dishwasher and put them in the fridge. Now I have the convenience of bottled without spending the money, and I’m happy I am not creating waste. • To remove stubborn contact paper from kitchen shelves, use a hair dryer set on low to loosen the adhesive, then peel away slowly. • Here’s a trick for removing hard-water stains on windows or glass doors: Apply fullstrength fabric softener to surface. Let dry, then use a wet cloth to remove, rinsing the cloth frequently. • Hang a bag of clothespins near the laundry basket. Then if something has a stain that needs to be addressed, put a clip on it before adding it to the basket. This way, you’ll know what to pretreat on wash day. -- D.W. in Washington • To keep pants on a hanger from creasing, I slit a paper towel cardboard roll and slip it over the hanger. I tape it together and then put the pants over it. This has worked for me for many years. -- I.R. in Nebraska

HOLLYWOOD -- It looks like “The Lone Ranger” won’t be riding again as soon as expected. As we reported earlier, Armie Hammer of “The Social Network” was cast in the title role, with Johnny Depp set to play his trusted companion, Tonto. The Jerry Bruckheimer production was budgeted at $250 million, which Disney balked at, demanding the budget be slashed to $200 million. You’d think with the billions Bruckheimer and Depp made for Disney on the “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise, it would give them what they want -- but times are tough! In the meantime, Depp has “The Rum Diary,” a film based on an early novel by journalist Hunter S. Thompson. Depp plays a writer who leaves New York in the 1950s to write for a newspaper in Puerto Rico and becomes a heavy drinker and womanizer. Sounds like my kind of a job! The film, due out Oct. 28, also stars Aaron Eckhart, Giovanni Ribisi, Richard Jenkins and Amber Heard of “Pineapple Express” and “Zombieland.” Meanwhile, the script for “Pirates of the Caribbean 5” has been completed, but Depp wants a break before he dives into that character again. Armie Hammer, who has completed work on Clint Eastwood’s “Edgar” film about FBI boss J. Edgar Hoover, is about to play the prince in “The Brothers Grimm: Snow White.” Lily Collins, daughter of pop singer Phil Collins, has the title role, with Julia Roberts as the evil witch and Nathan Lane along for comic relief. *** Ever wonder how William Shakespeare found time to
write all those complicated plays? That question is posed by the Oct. 28 release of “Anonymous.” Scholars have wondered for years if Shakespeare’s plays were written by him or penned by others, such as The Earl of Oxford, for one. Their argument is presented with the help of award-winning actress Vanessa Redgrave, her daughter Joely Redgrave, David Thewlis and Derek Jacobi, an authority on Shakespeare who endorses this theory. How much higher would our grades have been in English class if we hadn’t had to read all those long, hard-to-understand plays? *** Finally, did you believe that roast last week of Charlie Sheen? Is there no level to which he will stoop? It wasn’t enough that he nearly lost the jobs and income of the cast and crew of “Two and a Half Men” with his tirades, but he believed he could harm the reboot of the show by scheduling his roast opposite the premiere of his replacement, Ashton Kutcher. During the low-class ... no, strike that ... no-class roast, Sheen was referred to as “a drug addict,” “an abuser of women,” “a connoisseur of porn stars and prostitutes,” “a horrible actor” and “a reckless loser” -- and those are the nicer things we could print. In other words, he’s a loser, a bruiser and a boozer! Send letters to Tony Rizzo’s Hollywood, 8306 Wilshire Blvd., No. 362, Beverly Hills, CA 90211.

It keeps body weight on the lean side. It prevents the heart from slowing down. It’s involved with the production of body heat. It keeps cell chemistry perking along at the optimum rate. Hyperthyroidism, an overactive gland, pushes all the above functions into overdrive. People lose weight in spite of eating more food. The heart races even when people are at rest. Hands tend to shake. At a room temperature comfortable for most, affected people feel hot. The eyes often bulge. Menstrual periods are thrown off their normal cycle. One of the major causes of an overactive gland is Graves disease. In this condition, the body makes antibodies that stimulate the gland to produce excessive amounts of its hormone. The gland enlarges -- becomes a goiter.

I don’t know of a way to treat the gland reliably without resorting to medicines or surgery. Medicines for hyperthyroidism are methimazole or PTU. The medicine chosen is taken for six months to two years and then stopped. If a person relapses, the medicine has to be restarted. Radioactive iodine is another treatment. When people hear the word “radioactive,” they cringe. In the decades and decades of its use, radioactive iodine hasn’t been responsible for cancer. The iodine makes a beeline to the gland and puts it out of commission. It’s similar to having surgery without a scalpel. Surgical removal of all or part of the gland is the third option for this condition. The booklet on the thyroid gland explains both an overactive and underactive gland. “Judy: A Legendary Film Career” by John Fricke (Running Press, $30) Reviewed by Larry Cox
Seventy-five years ago this autumn, “Pigskin Parade,” a film musical that featured a rather tired plot involving a college football game, opened in theaters around the country. The cast included Stuart Erwin, Betty Grable, comedian Patsy Kelly, singer Tony Martin and the Yacht Club Boys. Judy Garland also appeared in the film and was listed 10th --- or dead last --- on the promotional poster.
Although the film was not a major boxoffice hit, moviegoers did take notice of Garland and the incredible energy she brought to the screen. During the years that followed, she evolved to become one of the world’s greatest entertainers. In addition to her film work, she was a frequent performer on network radio, a major talent at Decca records and did concert tours that brought her international fame. John Fricke, winner of two Emmy Awards, has compiled a coffee table book that documents Garland’s film work in unprecedented detail. His text is supplemented with more than 600 images, many published for the first time.

954-921-Kids (5437) 954-652-8861 This book is divided into four main parts spanning the years from 1936 to 1963. Along with her film work, there is a brief biography and highlights of her radio, television and concert work, contemporary reviews and comments from her co-stars and co-workers. Also included are musical number listings, synopses and production histories. Most intriguing, however, are the film productions for which she was supposedly considered but for one reason or another failed to do. For example, one only has to look at the preproduction costume stills of “Annie Get Your Gun” to wonder what that movie would have been like if Garland had starred in it as originally planned instead of Betty Hutton. Judy Garland was a superstar who helped redefine American entertainment and left an indelible mark on our popular culture. John Fricke has compiled a fitting tribute that not only showcases Garland’s film roles and achievements, but celebrates one of this country’s brightest talents. (c) 2011 King Features Synd., Inc.

Vegetarian Foods: Powerful for Health
A vegetarian menu is a powerful and pleasurable way to achieve good health. The vegetarian eating pattern is based on a wide variety of foods that are satisfying, delicious, and healthful. A vegetarian menu is a powerful and pleasurable way to achieve good health. The vegetarian eating pattern is based on a wide variety of foods that are satisfying, delicious, and healthful. Vegetarians avoid meat, fish, and poultry. Those who include dairy products and eggs in their diets are called lacto-ovo vegetarians. Vegans (pure vegetarians) eat no meat, fish, poultry, eggs, or dairy products. While there is a considerable advantage to a lacto-ovo vegetarian pattern, vegan diets are the healthiest of all, reducing risk of a broad range of health concerns.
A Healthy Heart
Vegetarians have much lower cholesterol levels than meateaters, and heart disease is less common in vegetarians. The reasons are not hard to find. Vegetarian meals are typically low in saturated fat and usually contain little or no cholesterol. Since cholesterol is found only in animal products such as meat, dairy, and eggs, vegans consume a cholesterol-free diet. The type of protein in a vegetarian diet may be another important advantage. Many studies show that replacing animal protein with plant protein lowers blood cholesterol levels—even if the amount and type of fat in the diet stays the same. Those studies show that a low-fat, vegetarian diet has a clear advantage over other diets. Lower Blood Pressure An impressive number of studies, dating back to the early 1920s, show that vegetarians have lower blood pressure than nonvegetarians. In fact, some studies have shown that adding meat to a vegetarian diet raises blood pressure levels rapidly and significantly. The effects of a vegetarian
Don’t Delay! Opt Out of Online Databases Delete Yourself From Online Databases There is a new step to be taken these days when it comes to guarding your credit: look yourself up online. There are dozens of online sites that assemble public records and publicly available information and offer it for sale. Information that can be purchased includes telephone number, home address, real estate deed, professional licensing, lawsuits, births, divorces, marriages, deaths, household demographics. Bankruptcies, email address, felonies and tax liens can be included, and so much more. Some of them will provide a satellite map with an arrow pointing to your house. Let’s say you look up your name on a site such as Intelius. com. You’ll likely find the name of your spouse and children next to yours. To your surprise you might find someone else’s name listed as well. This might be your first clue that someone has stolen your identity and has taken out a loan or made a purchase, combining your information. If this happens to you, act quickly. Call one of the credit bureaus and instigate a credit alert. One is required to tell both of the other two, so you’re saved that step. Controlling Diabetes
October 7, 2011 • 11 yet be explained. For example, researchers are not quite sure why vegetarians have more of certain white blood cells, called “natural killer cells,” which are able to seek out and destroy cancer cells.
The calcium Connection
The latest studies on diabetes show that a vegetarian diet high in complex carbohydrates and fiber (which are found only in plant foods) and low in fat is the best dietary prescription for controlling diabetes. A diet based on vegetables, legumes, fruits, and whole grains, which is also low in fat and sugar, can lower blood sugar levels and often reduce or even eliminate the need for medication. Since individuals with diabetes are at high risk for heart disease, avoiding fat and cholesterol is important, and a vegetarian diet is the best way to do that.
Vegetarians are less likely to form either kidney stones or gallstones. In addition, vegetarians may also be at lower risk for osteoporosis because they eat little or no animal protein. A high intake of animal protein encourages the loss of calcium from the bones. Replacing animal products with plant foods reduces the amount of calcium lost. This may help to explain why people who live in countries where the diet is typically plant-based have little osteoporosis, even when calcium intake is lower than that in dairy-consuming countries.
Cancer Prevention
It’s easy to plan vegetarian diets that meet all your nutrient needs. Grains, beans, and vegetables are rich in protein and iron. Green leafy vegetables, beans, lentils, tofu, corn tortillas, and nuts are excellent sources of calcium, as are enriched soymilk and fortified juices.
Breast cancer rates are dramatically lower in countries where diets are typically plant-based. When people from those countries adopt a Western, meat-based diet, their rates of breast cancer soar. Vegetarians also have significantly lower rates of colon cancer than meat-eaters. Colon cancer is more closely associated with meat consumption than any other dietary factor.
Vitamin D is normally made in the body when sun shines on the skin. People who are dark-skinned or live at northern latitudes have some difficulty producing vitamin D yearround. Vitamin D can easily be obtained from fortified foods. Some sources are commercial breakfast cereals, soymilk, other supplemental products, and multivitamins. Regular intake of vitamin B12 is important. Good sources include all common multiple vitamins (including vegetarian vitamins), fortified cereals, some brands of nutritional yeast, and fortified soymilk. It is especially important for pregnant women and breast-feeding mothers to get enough vitamin B12. When reading food labels, look for the word cyanocobalamin in the ingredient list. This is the form of vitamin B12 that is best absorbed.
A vegetarian diet helps prevent cancer. Studies of vegetarians show that death rates from cancer are only about one-half to three-quarters of the general population’s death rates.
Why do vegetarian diets help protect against cancer? First, they are lower in fat and higher in fiber than meat-based diets. But other factors are important, too. Plants contain other cancer-fighting substances called phytochemicals. For example, vegetarians usually consume more of the plant pigments beta-carotene and lycopene. This might help to explain why they have less lung and prostate cancer. Also, some studies have suggested that diets that avoid dairy products may reduce the risk of prostate and ovarian cancer. Some of the anti-cancer aspects of a vegetarian diet cannot sites as you can. Most of them don’t make it easy, but the fewer places that have your information, the better. Often there is an opt-out page, but you’ll have to hunt for it. You’ll need a photo file of your drivers license with the photo and number blacked out. You’ll have to upload or fax that information as well as specify which name you wish to have them delete. This can be tricky: You might be listed as first name and last name, or your middle initial might be included, or your first two initials might be used instead of names. Ask for all of them to be deleted.

Italian Vegetable Relish Zucchini happens to be one of those vegetables that gets far too little respect. I think it might be because its vines are so proficient. No matter how good something is, when it’s overabundant, it somehow is taken for granted. Try this ultra-easy relish, and others just might ask you, “Where in the world did you come up with this great recipe?” 1 1/2 cups finely chopped unpeeled zucchini 1 cup shredded carrots 1/4 cup finely chopped green and/or red bell pepper 1/4 cup finely chopped onion 1/2 cup fat-free Italian dressing In a medium bowl, combine zucchini, carrots, pepper and onion. Add Italian dressing. Mix gently to combine. Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour. Gently stir again just before serving. DEAR PAW’S CORNER: We adopted a beautiful, fluffy pup at a nearby shelter. A worker there described it as a Russian sheepdog. She said “Curtyâ€? should grow up into a large dog with a lot of energy. So far, I haven’t found this to be true. Curty hasn’t grown much beyond his height when we adopted him, and he doesn’t seem to have the energy I have seen in shepherd breeds, although he is pretty playful and was easy to housebreak. Are there any health problems he might have, or do we just have a mixed breed dog that isn’t going to take on purebred characteristics? -- Jerry C., Burlington, Vt. DEAR JERRY: There are several types of sheepdogs hailing from Russia and surrounding regions, so it’s hard to say exactly which breed you have. Indeed, you may have a mixed-breed dog, if the shelter wasn’t able to provide any information on Curty’s former home. The best thing to do is take Curty to the veterinarian for a checkup. E x p l a i n that he isn’t growing as fast as you thought he would and that he doesn’t have a lot of energy. The vet can check for any signs of underlying health issues.
ADVERTISE YOUR BUSINESS HERE for as little at $22.50 Per Issue!
Curty could be a perfectly healthy pup, but just a mixedbreed dog who is developing normally and won’t be very big. An even-tempered, playful, well-socialized, easyto-train dog isn’t a bad thing. But do make sure that he’s healthy and that there are no hidden health problems.
