It’s these nerve 18681 W Dixie Hwy cells that compose what is often referred to as “gray matter.” About 100 trillion connections exist among those cells, and 305-931-2306 Tues-Sat: 8:30am-5:30pm not one neuron touches another one. known as synapses, and they allow the information to flow from one neuron to another. Each nerve cell can have up to 40,000 synapses. • Changes in the synapses are associated with learning and retention of information. Each time you form a memory of some type, a new connection is created. When synapses deteriorate, memory loss and changes in brain function often occur. Studies indicate that people who perform mentally stimulating tasks are less likely to develop dementia. Researchers have determined that stress interferes with transmission, and nerve cells actually shrink from the effects of stress. Deterioration has also been linked to drug use and excessive alcohol consumption, as well as the chemicals in certain pesticides. turn the page for more! BRAIN-Y FACTS (continued): • Wernicke’s Area and Broca’s Area are both important in the area of language. While Wernicke’s is responsible for comprehension of speech, Broca’s is involved in the production of speech. If Wernicke’s Area is damaged, a person loses the ability to understand language. He or she can speak clearly, but the combination of words makes no sense. Those with an impaired Broca’s Area understand language, but can’t properly form the words to produce speech. • If you’re having trouble focusing on a task and can’t complete a sequence of movements or solve a problem, you may have an impairment of the frontal lobe of the cerebral cortex. This area can also produce mood changes, changes in personality and social behavior, and an inability to interact with others.

• Research confirms that brain waves are more active when you are dreaming than when you are awake. If you’re average, you’ll have between four and seven dreams a night over the course of one to two hours. • Think about it! The average brain does just that — It produces about 70,000 thoughts on a normal day. • Certain scents can trigger memories, for example, the smell of roses might bring a family member’s funeral into vivid focus. This is because the olfactory nerve, the one that registers smells, is very close to the amygdala, that part of the brain connected to emotions and their memories, and also to the hippocampus, an area associated with memory. If these areas are damaged, the ability to identify certain scents can be affected. • Want to increase your brain power? Reading aloud promotes brain development, as do music lessons, which boost the brain’s organizational ability. Children who learn two languages by the age of five will develop a denser gray matter. Those who grow up in a stimulating environment can have up to a 25-percent greater ability to learn.

FAMOUS LANDMARKS OF THE WORLD

THE TOWER BRIDGE

Spanning the Thames River in London is the Tower Bridge, one of the world’s most recognizable landmarks. Did you know it’s the only bridge on the Thames that can be raised and lowered to allow ships to pass through? Follow along and see what else you may not know about this edifice. • Many people make the mistake of thinking the Tower Bridge is the same as London Bridge. London Bridge is the next bridge upstream, a mile west of Tower Bridge. Several London Bridges have in fact “fallen downâ€? as the nursery rhyme proclaimed. One was actually sold to an American businessman in 1968, dismantled, and reconstructed in Lake Havasu, Arizona. • The Tower Bridge was proposed to help cope with the increased commercial development along the river during the latter half of the 1800s. A traditional style of bridge was not an option because it would not allow tall-masted ships to reach the port facilities located between London Bridge and the Tower of London. A “basculeâ€? bridge was required, one with a roadway that could be raised to allow tall vessels to pass through. This term comes from the French word bascule, meaning “seesaw.â€? • More than 50 designs were submitted for consideration. Once the design was selected, construction began in 1886 and continued for eight years. More than 430 workers labored on the project. The first step was to sink two enormous piers containing 70,000 tons of concrete into the riverbed. The framework of 11,000 tons of steel was next, followed by granite and stone work to cover the steel. • Open-air pedestrian walkways were installed 143 feet (44 m) above the river between the tops of the two towers, enabling those on foot to cross the bridge while the roadway was raised. However, most pedestrians merely

They reopened 72 years later, as the site of a public Tower Bridge museum. • The Bridge was officially opened in June of 1894 by the Prince of Wales (who later became King Edward VII, the great-grandfather of Queen Elizabeth II). Not every Londoner was a fan of the new edifice, with one critic stating, “A more absurd structure than the Tower Bridge was never thrown across a strategic river.â€? The raising of the bridge was accomplished by a hydraulic system, powered by pressurized water kept in large storage units. A new electro-hydraulic drive system replaced the old system in 1974, followed by a computerized system in 2000. • During Queen Elizabeth II’s Silver Jubilee in 1977, the bridge was painted red, white and blue as part of the celebration. Prior to that, it had been chocolate brown and a greenish-blue color. • More than 40,000 people cross the 800-foot-long (244-m) span each day. The bridge can be raised to an 83-degree angle in just five minutes — an amazing feat considering each bascule weighs 1,000 tons! River traffic always takes precedence over road traffic, but 24-hours notice must be given in order to have the bridge raised for a ship. Because many days often go by without the bridge lifting, it is considered good luck to witness the opening.

But often there are no symptoms at all. Only half of patients diagnosed with DVT had symptoms. Flyers should be aware of this condition as new studies show that ECS and DVT affect 1 out of every 10 passengers. The above risk factors coupled with long-haul flights seem to be a significant combination in the development of ECS.

• Seek medical advice for pre-existing risk factors before flying.

DVT is a form of thrombosis that develops in one of the deep veins of the body. A thrombosis is the formation of a blood clot in a blood vessel. DVT often begins in the calf or thigh because blood moves relatively slowly in these areas, particularly if exercise is limited. As the blood begins to pool in an area, a clot develops and can attach itself to the wall of a vessel or in more severe cases become lodged within a vessel, blocking blood flow. Some circumstances that increase an individual’s risk of developing DVT include:

Reg. $1,000 & up

*New Clients Only • Valid with Coupon Only • Offers Cannot Be Combined

A few important precautions may help prevent DVT:

Deep vein thrombosis has become a hazard of air travel— especially for those seated in the coach cabin, where there is minimal legroom. However, ECS is not confined to the “back of the plane” you may be at risk of DVT even if you fly first or business class. Two luminaries were reported to have experienced ECS, notably President Nixon, who developed this condition on his way to Russia in 1974 and Vice President Dan Quayle in 1994 after a long plane flight. Numerous reports have referenced the realities of the effects of ECS. Some of them include headlines that read, “Bride-to-be killed by blood clot after 20 hour flight,” “Passenger dies after nine-hour US flight,” “Long flights cost 2,000 lives a year” etc.

Hair Extensions*

• Avoid alcohol, which is dehydrating. The air inside planes is very dry, and passengers can easily become dehydrated. Dehydration thickens the blood and may raise the risk of clots. • Drink plenty of non-alcoholic liquids. They prevent dehydration and compel you to walk to the restroom repeatedly. It is now commonplace to see passengers carry a water bottle onboard, rather than wait for the beverage service to begin. • While seated, stretch your legs occasionally. Do not cross your legs while sitting. Do partial leg lifts, and flex and extend your ankles. Tighten and then release your buttocks. Press the balls of your feet down hard against the floor or footrest. Take slow, deep breaths from time to time. Several international air carriers offer in-flight exercise guides and videos to aid in preventing the development of ECS.

• Wear elastic support hose during your trip. This seems to be one of the most effective methods of prevention. Fortunately for South Floridian’s there is a local store that carries these special garments. Located in Hollywood, Homecare America 3379 Sheridan Street (954-962-1433) seems to be the apparent destination of air travelers, particularly for flight attendants who fly out of Miami and Ft. Lauderdale for compression leg wear. The specialists at Homecare America explained the theory behind the gradient compression hosiery is that it provides the greatest compression at the ankle while gradually decreasing

upward. This gradual compression prevents leg swelling by countering pressures inside the leg and by promoting blood flow back to the heart rather than allowing it to pool in the legs. Not only will the compression hosiery, which is available for both men and women lower your risk of Economy Class Syndrome, but it will also reduce ankle swelling, general leg fatigue, and leg discomfort. • Take advantage of stopovers, when it is possible to get off the plane and walk. Taking reasonable precautions to prevent this potentially deadly condition makes sense before you embark on your next flight.

Texas Rangers pitcher Nolan Ryan, boxing champ Mohammed Ali, decathlete Bruce Jenner and Olympic diver Greg Louganis have all triumphed over their disability. • When painter Pablo Picasso flunked out of school due to reading difficulties, his art professor father spurred him to develop his artistic abilities, a gift that was evident at a very young age. It’s also believed that Leonardo da Vinci was dyslexic, evidenced by his notes, written right-to-left, a trait exhibited by many left-handed dyslexics. • In the entertainment world, actors Tom Cruise, Patrick Dempsey and Orlando Bloom have all battled the effects of dyslexia. Bloom states, “You have all the information you need, but find it harder to process… It’s a lack of access.” Jay Leno was advised to drop out of high school but proved his advisors wrong when he achieved a bachelor’s degree in speech therapy. • Although dyslexia makes language comprehension and writing extremely challenging, that didn’t stop Fannie Flagg from pursuing a writing career. about some familiar folks who have risen above its effects.

• Dyslexia is caused by a deficiency in the brain’s ability to translate images from eyes or ears into understandable language. It’s not the result of vision or hearing problems, neither is it a sign of mental retardation. In fact, highly intelligent and creative people are affected. It’s estimated that over 40 million Americans have dyslexia. Some researchers believe that as much as 17 percent of schoolaged children have the disability. • “Primary dyslexia” is a dysfunction of the left side of

Breaking Medical News!

Low-Fat, Plant-Filled Diet Reduces Weight and Symptoms of Menopause Women who were encouraged to eat a low-fat diet with more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains were more likely to lose weight and reduce hot flashes and night sweats, according a new study in the journalMenopause. Researchers analyzed 17,473 postmenopausal women from the Women’s Health Initiative Dietary Modification trial and put them either in a group supported to make specific dietary changes or a control group that received minimal nutrition information and no group support. Although weight loss was not a stated goal for either group, women who adopted the low-fat diet were three times as likely to lose weight, compared with the control group, while women in the control group were twice as likely to gain weight. Women who lost weight were more likely to eliminate hot flashes and night sweats, compared with women who maintained their weight. These improvements were strongest among those who made the dietary changes. Kroenke CH, Caan BJ, Stefanick ML, et al. Effects of a dietary intervention and weight change on vasomotor symptoms in the Women’s Health Initiative.Menopause. In press.

A study in this month’s Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dieteticsshows that soy products have a marked anti-inflammatory effect. Researchers examined the diets and measures of inflammation in 1,005 middleaged Chinese women who were part of the Shanghai Women’s Health Study. The more soy products the women consumed, the less inflammation they experienced. Inflammation is linked to cancer, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. Possible mechanisms proposed for the reduced inflammation include the protective effects of phytoestrogens or of omega-3 fatty acid found in soy products. Wu SH, Shu XO, Chow WH, et al. Soy food intake and circulating levels of inflammatory markers in Chinese Women. J Acad Nutr Diet. 2012;112:996-1004.

Low-Carb Diets Increase Risk of Heart Disease A low-carbohydrate, high-protein diet greatly boosts risk of heart disease, according to a new study published in the British Medical Journal. The diets of nearly 44,000 Swedish women were tracked for about 16 years. Those who ate a diet low in carbohydrates and high in protein increased their risk of heart disease. Here is the math: Every 10 percent decrease in carbohydrate intake or increase in protein intake resulted in a 5 percent increased risk of heart disease. The risk of heart disease increased even further as carbohydrate intake fell and protein intake climbed. Women sometimes adopt low-carbohydrate diets for weight loss, however, this study and many previous studies show low-carb and high-protein diets to be dangerous. Lagiou P, Sandin S, Lof M, Trichopoulos D, Adami HO, Weiderpass E. Low carbohydrate-high protein diet and incidence of cardiovascular diseases in Swedish women: prospective cohort study. Fiber Lowers Risk of Death Eating plenty of fiber lowers the risk of dying from many diseases, according to a new report in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. The European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition study looked at the diets of more than 450,000 European men and women. Those who ate the most high-fiber foods—vegetables, fruits, beans, and whole grains—were most likely to stay alive and well over the next 13 years. Here’s the math: Every 10 grams of fiber per day cut the risk of dying by 10 percent. For digestive diseases, every 10 grams of fiber per day cut mortality risk by nearly 40 percent. Fiber was also helpful for diseases that affect blood circulation and respiration, and even some cancers. Chuang SC, Norat T, Murphy N, et al. Fiber intake and total and cause-specific mortality in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition cohort.Am J Clin Nutr. 2012;96:164-174. Dracula, who owns a five-star resort catering to the world’s most famous monsters, invites his monster friends to celebrate his daughter Mavis’ (Gomez) 118th birthday party. Big Hollywood question: What went wrong with the recent film “Wanderlust”? Produced for $35 million by Judd Apatow and Paul Rudd, among others, and starring Rudd, Jennifer Aniston, Justin Theroux and Alan Alda, it only made $21,450,353 at the worldwide box office. While Aniston hit the bulls-eye with her over-the-top boss in “Horrible Bosses,” she must have thought this was a funny script about a married couple who accidentally wind up in a hippie commune hotel. In the film she has a sexual encounter with Justin Theroux’s character. They must have liked rehearsing a lot because, according to the tabloids, they probably will get married. Which only proves ... you don’t have to wander too far when the lust is that good!

HOLLYWOOD -- Tom Cruise, who must have been shocked by the failure of “Rock of Ages” (though he got good notices) and his recent marriage break-up, was stuck on location in Iceland, working on his latest film, “Oblivion,” and couldn’t go to New York to confront Katie Holmes. The film, budgeted at $130 million and co-starring Morgan Freeman, is more along the lines of his “Mission: Impossible” franchise. It’s about a veteran soldier sent to a far-off planet to destroy the remains of an alien race. It’s set for an April 2013 release. Meanwhile, no one will confirm if Cruise will play opposite Beyonce in “A Star Is Born.” Did “Rock of Ages” help, or hurt, his chances for that role? Brad Pitt is before the cameras shooting “Twelve Years as a Slave” with Michael Fassbender, Benedict Cumberbatch, Paul Giamatti and Alfre Woodard. The film, shooting in Louisiana, is about a free black man living in New York who is kidnapped in 1841 and sold into slavery in the Deep South. Pitt also is one of the producers of the film being directed by Steve McQueen. Then Pitt will star opposite Michael Fassbender (again) and Oscar-winner Javier Bardem in “The Counselor” for Ridley Scott, who gave him his breakthrough role in l991’s “Thelma and Louise.” People keep asking me what Jack Nicholson and Adam Sandler were doing together at a recent Lakers game. Sandler plays Dracula, and Nicholson joins Selena Gomez (Justin Bieber’s girlfriend), Andy Samberg, Kevin James, Fran Drescher, Jon Lovitz, Cee Lo Green, Steve Buscemi, Molly Shannon

Simply put, Cano didn’t select the hometown player for the contest, the aforementioned Butler. Frankly, as any knowledgeable fan of the game will agree, he didn’t deserve to be named to the team. And while Major League Baseball did the right thing for the best interests of the game by requiring a player be named from every team in the league, like an infield fly (baseball’s only intrinsic flaw), they didn’t see this controversy coming. Neither did the Yankee’s PR flacks.

KC Karma for Cano If you were tasked with picking three players from the American League to participate in the annual All Star Home Run Derby, the Kansas City Royals’ designated hitter Billy Butler’s name wouldn’t even cross your mind. No, if you were Yankees’ second baseman Robinson Cano, the winner of last year’s Derby who was charged with choosing the squad, you’d probably pick Prince Fielder, Jose Bautista and Mark Trumbo ... possibly Adam Dunn. Which is exactly what he did. And while the American League won the contest, Cano turned out to be the big loser that night. Last season, Cano won the Derby in truly grand yet heartwarming style. His father on the mound, he set a record by blasting home runs at will during the final round. The emotion between father and son resonated with players and fans alike. Presumable due to that episode, the powers that be in Major League Baseball decided to let the previous year’s winner choose the team of his choice. While that my seem benevolent to some, in most circles that’s also -- and more accurately -- referred to as being “thrown to the wolves.” Cano is a great baseball player. Who knows? He may become a Hall of Famer, but he certainly will win no awards in the public-relations department. He might

Beleagured Kansas City Royal fans made sure they got the message. While Royals’ owner David Glass, a Walmart executive, is content to put “break even” teams on the field, Royal’s fans are completely fed up. They took the snub as a slap to the face. and Cano’s remarks before the Derby insinuating the Yankee’s have more fans in the stands when they come to town, didn’t sit well with the Boulevard beer-and-barbecue set. Rabid fans listen to the two sports-talk stations in town like hungry raccoons in an apple orchard, feeding off each word. Reigning radio champion Kevin Keitzman fanned their flames, encouraging them to boo Cano -- and boo they did. It was more a statement of pride, that you can’t just come into someone’s house and disrespect the host, than it was of love for Butler (who is, don’t get me wrong, a very good and very classy ballplayer). The boo birds rattled Cano, who ended up hitting as many home runs in the contest as Butler did (zero). More than anything, however, they proved that there’s a reason why coaches fill out lineup cards and why fans control the All Star game. Call it Kansas City karma. Mark Vasto is a veteran sportswriter who lives in Kansas City. (c) 2012 King Features Synd., Inc.

Serve this cool creamy sauce with Falafel Sandwiches or any spicy food.

These sandwiches are like Middle Eastern tacos in which pita bread (or pocket bread) takes the place of tortillas. The pita bread is filled with spicy garbanzo patties called falafel, lettuce, cucumbers, tomatoes, onions, and Cucumber Sauce. Packaged mixes for falafel patties are sold in natural foods stores and many supermarkets. 1 package falafel mix 4 cups shredded lettuce 1 cup sliced cucumber 1 medium tomato, diced 2 green onions 6 pieces pita bread 3/4 cup Cucumber Sauce Prepare falafel patties according to package directions. Warm pita bread until it is soft. This may be done by placing individual pieces in a vegetable steamer over boiling water, or by wrapping them in foil and heating them in the oven. Cut warm pita bread in half and carefully open the pocket. Fill each pita half with two falafel patties. Garnish with lettuce, cucumber, tomato, green onions, and Cucumber Sauce. who’s stubbornly insistent on doing things her way. But her method of controlling the air temperature is not only inefficient, it’s a quick way to break the thermostat.

By Samantha Mazzotta How Not to Adjust Your Thermostat Q: My mother-in-law insists on cranking the old manual thermostat all the way to the left on a hot day. She says this will cool the house faster. When it gets too cold inside, she cranks it all the way to the right to turn off the air conditioner. How can I tell her that isn’t the most efficient way to cool a house? -- Damian L., Springfield, Mass. A: Well, I’m no expert in how to break the news to someone

In fact, that may already have happened. Your mother-inlaw is probably controlling the thermostat this way because she is not getting the comfortable temperature she wants when she sets the thermostat in the typical “comfortable” range of 65 F to 75 F. This may have happened from turning the control gauge too far left or right, or it may simply be an old thermostat in need of replacement. Instead of insisting that she set the thermostat in one place and leave it alone, talk to her about bringing in a heating and cooling contractor to inspect the entire air conditioning system, including the thermostat. And try to persuade her to have the old thermostat replaced with a more accurate, programmable electronic thermostat. The cost savings that result from regularly maintaining a cooling system and keeping the temperature in a comfortable range can be 1947 as “The Diary of Anne Frank.”

The miserable treatment of children and the institution of the debtors’ jail became topics of several of Dickens’ novels. • ¥ On Aug. 2, 1876, “Wild Bill” Hickok, one of the greatest gunfighters of the American West, is murdered in Deadwood, S.D. between the years of 1982-1987. When Martin entered the digital frontier of photography in 2008 he quickly realized that simple photographs could be turned into extraordinary works of art by combining several photographs and scenery into one extravagant piece of art he calls, Surreal Nature. Soon after creating his first pieces of surreal artwork, he needed to frame them in order to be displayed the way he had imagined. Martin found wood that was thrown away and later found that these pieces of wood were once a crate that would carry marble from Brazil. Rather than being thrown into the landfill, Martin uses these once destroyed pieces of wood and turns them into beautiful frames for his surreal artwork. hatched as a baby to lay her own eggs as an adult. At 9 p.m., the adventure begins at the Museum of Discovery and Science with an informative hands-on session about turtles (land, fresh water and salt water) with an expanded focus on sea turtles. The adventure continues to Fort Lauderdale beach where Museum expert guides will lead guests to the sea turtle’s nesting grounds to look for amazing sea turtles. We cannot guarantee a sea turtle will be spotted on every walk but when it does happen it is a natural wonder that no one will ever forget. Guests should be prepared to walk approximately one to two miles, and provide their own transportation and snacks. Advance reservations are required as space is limited. 2012 Dates: July 24. Little League Elbow Is Overuse Injury DEAR DR. DONOHUE: My 12-year-old son is something of a phenomenon when it comes to baseball, and he loves playing the game. I haven’t pushed him into it. He’s a particularly awesome pitcher, and his coaches are amazed at what he can do. I practice with him every day. He now has a sore elbow in his pitching arm. I think it might be Little League elbow. My wife blames me, because, she says, I overwork him. I need some guidelines on how much throwing is too much. Thanks. -- R.C. ANSWER: The elbow is a site that’s a potential calamity for the immature skeleton. Children have vulnerable spots in their bones called growth plates. These bone parts haven’t yet become bone. They permit elongation of bones. One of those sites is the elbow. To make sure we’re talking about the same thing, let the boy’s throwing arm hang down with his palm facing forward. Feel the area of the elbow next to the body. That’s where Little League elbow makes itself known. It’s an overuse injury, meaning the boy is throwing too many pitches with too little rest. The incidence of elbow pain in young baseball players is quite high -- 20 percent to 40 percent. It can be avoided with a sensible program that limits the number of throws per day. First, your son should not throw until the pain leaves. Then he can resume throwing, but gradually do so. Eventually he can work up to the Little League’s standards for pitching for 12-year-olds. If a boy or girl of this age throws 66 pitches in one game, the child needs four days of rest -- no throwing; if it’s 51 to 65 pitches, three days of
