This week, in commemoration of National Dog Week, Tidbits is going to the dogs! Let’s look at some unusual breeds and random facts about “man’s best friend.” • We’ve been celebrating National Dog Week since 1928 when Captain Will Judy, a noted dog judge, founded the week of tribute. Judy, a decorated World War I veteran, left behind a law practice to establish his own publishing house in order to publish his war diary, essays, and reference books about his life’s passion, dogs. He authored The Dog Encyclopedia and other works about breeding, training, and show dogs, as well as publishing Dog World magazine. • It’s believed that the oldest domesticated dog breed is the Saluki, which has its origins in ancient Egypt around 330 B.C. They were kept as royal pets and mummified after death and buried alongside Pharaohs. They are still used as hunting dogs by the nobles in the Middle East. • What are folks naming their dogs these days? The most popular names for males dogs are Max, Buddy, and Rocky, while the top choices for female dogs are Bella, Molly, and Lucy. Other favorites are Jake, Charlie, Maggie, and Daisy.

IT’S A DOG’S LIFE (continued):
• Ever wonder where the term “man’s best friend” originated? U.S. Senator George Graham Vest was a small-town Missouri lawyer in 1870 when he was hired to represent a farmer suing a man for killing his best hunting dog, Old Drum. Vest offered a heart-warming and poignant closing argument to the jury, one so powerful it brought tears to the eyes of the jurors. In part, Vest declared, “The best friend a man has in the world may turn against him and become his enemy. His son or daughter that he has reared with loving care may prove ungrateful…the one absolutely unselfish friend that man can have in this selfish world, the one that never deserts him, the one that never proves ungrateful or treacherous is his dog.” In 1948, the community of Warrenburg, Missouri, had the “Tribute to the American Dog” speech inscribed on a bronze statue of Vest and Old Drum. Historians consider it one of the world’s great speeches. • Since 1905, the American Kennel Club has
compiled statistics on what our favorite breeds are. For 30 years, the Boston terrier ranked in either first or second place. When German Shepherd RinTin-Tin gained popularity in silent films, that breed took over the lead as most popular. The original Rin-TinTin was rescued from a World War I battlefield by an American soldier who brought him back to the U.S., where the canine appeared in 27 Hollywood films. • Cocker spaniels became the most popular breed in 1936 and held the honor for the next 16 years, when the Beagle gained the title. In 1960, poodles were the top dog and reigned for a record 22 years. Since 1991, the Labrador Retriever has been in first place, followed by German Shepherds and Golden Retrievers. The Lab is highly trainable and is frequently used for search and rescue purposes, as guide dogs for the blind, and on narcotics detection teams. • Although the collie has never made it to the Number One spot

in popularity, its status took a huge leap during the 1940s after the release of the hit film Lassie Come Home, starring Elizabeth Taylor and Roddy McDowall. It maintained the rank of third for several years, aided by the long-running Lassie television series. The collie now places 35th. Likewise, the 1962 movie Big Red about an Irish setter vaulted that breed into 3rd place for a time, but it now ranks #72. • For city folks and apartment dwellers, small dogs are the most popular, with the Yorkshire terrier leading the pack, followed by the poodle, dachshund, and Shih Tzu. The Shih Tzu originated in China, and was once the prized pet of that country’s royalty during the Ming Dynasty. It weighs between 11 and 16 lbs. (5 to 7.25 kg) and stands about 10.5 inches (26.7 cm) tall. • It’s no surprise that the Chihuahua is the smallest breed. This breed’s owners can expect their

dog to weigh under 6 pounds (2.7 kg) and measure between 6 and 9 inches (15.2 and 22.9 cm) tall and live between 10 and 18 years. The record holder of the title of world’s smallest dog is Milly, a Chihuahua living in Puerto Rico. She stands just 3.8 inches tall (9.65 cm) and weighs about a pound (0.5 kg). Milly’s birth weight was less than an ounce and she fit nicely in a teaspoon.
several breeds that will fit the bill. A survey of 218 veterinarians tells us that, although very large in size, both the Newfoundland and the Great Dane don’t bark often. Of course, when they do, their barks are louder and deeper than any other dogs. Both of these breeds are calm and docile. The sleek greyhound

more than 30,000 will have to undergo some type of reconstructive surgery, while 15 to 20 victims of dog bites will die this year.
• About 4.5 million people in the U.S. will be bitten by a dog this year. Nearly 850,000 of those will have to receive medical attention. Out of that number,
• Close behind the Chihuahua in size is the Affenpinscher, a German breed belonging to the Pinscher-Schnauzer family, dating back to the 17th century. Its unusual name is the result of its odd monkey-like facial expression. In the German language, Affen means “monkey,” and the breed has earned the nickname “monkey dog.” It weighs between 7 and 9 lbs. (3.2 – 4.1 kg) and stands less than a foot tall (30 cm). • Although the largest dog breed, the Great Dane, usually average about 160 lbs. (72.6 kg) in weight and 32 inches (0.8 m) in height, a Michigan Great Dane named Zeus, history’s tallest dog, measures 44 inches (1.1 m) tall and 7’ 4” (2.2 m) tall standing on his hind legs. Zeus weighs in at 150 lbs. (68 kg). • If you’re looking for a quiet dog, there are

FAMOUS CANADIANS:
RACHEL MCADAMS • The beautiful and talented actress Rachel McAdams hails from Ontario, growing up in the community of St. Thomas, raised by her nurse mother and truck driver father. She was a performer from an early age, but not in the acting arena. At age four, Rachel started figure skating and by age nine, was urged to move to Toronto to train as a pairs skater, an opportunity she turned down. As she tells it, “Getting up at 5:00 AM was a constant struggle. I used to get so nervous before competitions, I’d wake up in a cold sweat.” She still managed to endure competition until she was 18 when she hung up her skates to pursue an acting career. • Rachel entered Toronto’s York University, graduating from their theater program four years later. She landed some roles in Canadian television and films, receiving a Genie Award nomination (the Canadian equivalent of the Oscar) before moving on to Hollywood films. • The 2002 comedy The Hot Chick was the actress’ first U.S. film, but it was the 2004 popular teen movie Mean Girls that brought her notoriety, earning her two MTV Movie Awards. It was closely followed by The Notebook, which brought another MTV Award and cemented her box office star status. • After a series of successful films, Rachel took a well-deserved sabbatical, returning to Canada where she could, in her words, be “able to come home to a place where no one really cares what you do or who you are, and allow me a break from that life.” She did miss out on a few prize roles, such as the bond girl in Casino Royale and op-
posite Tom Cruise in Mission Impossible III. • McAdams returned to the big screen in 2008 and picked up her stardom where she had left off with The Time Traveler’s Wife, Morning Glory, Midnight in Paris, and Sherlock Holmes. • McAdams has always carefully prepared herself for her roles. To accurately portray a wealthy Southern belle in The Notebook, she enrolled in etiquette classes and spent time in Charleston, South Carolina to train herself in the accent. For the role of a wealthy socialite in 2005’s Wedding Crashers, McAdams took instruction for her sailing certification to properly play in a boating scene. When starring in The Lucky Ones, a story about Iraq War soldiers home on leave, she trained at the U.S. Army boot camp at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. • During her free time, McAdams is committed to helping others. Following Hurricane Katrina, she aided in the clean-up efforts. She volunteers for Habitat for Humanity in St. Thomas, Ontario, Canada’s Alzheimer’s Association, the READ Campaign, and the United Way. A devoted environmentalist, she can be seen riding her bicycle around Toronto, and heats her home with renewable energy. • Although she has a U.S. green card, McAdams retains her Canadian citizenship and chooses to live in Toronto, where she putters in her garden. Cooking is her passion and she claims that she would love to open a restaurant if she weren’t an actress. “Truthfully,” she says, “I never really wanted to be a big movie star. I never even wanted to work outside of Canada, or outside of the theater.”

FAMOUS PHARMACISTS Since September 25 is World Pharmacists Day, it seems like a good time for Tidbits to investigate some of history’s famous pharmacists and their contributions. • A young German pharmacist named Friedrich Serturner was the first to separate morphine from opium, a highly addictive medical and recreational narcotic and the main ingredient in laudanum. Serturner discovered morphine’s ability to relieve severe pain, and it was also initially used as a substitute for alcohol and opium dependency. Doctors then discovered that morphine’s continued use was even more addictive than the substances it was replacing. • Following a vacation at his country summer home, Scottish biologist and pharmacist Alexander Fleming returned to his lab to find that a fungus had developed in a stack of Petri dishes that had contained a staphylococcus culture. The bacteria had died all around the area containing the mold, prompting him to perform experiments over the next 20 years showing that the mold prevented growth of staphylococci, even when diluted 800 times. Fleming named his “mold juice” penicillin, and it was produced as an antibiotic that could cure numerous serious infectious diseases. For his work in the field of medicine, Fleming was awarded the 1945 Nobel Prize.
peppers that is responsible for their heat. • Not all of the innovations of pharmacists were medical. In 1885, a young Waco, Texas pharmacist, Charles Alderton, was working at Morrison’s Old Corner Drug Store when he invented a recipe for a soft drink he called the Waco. The drug store owner renamed the drink after a friend of his, Dr. Charles Pepper. After years of staying local, the beverage was introduced to the public at the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis, where 20 million people sampled it. The Dr Pepper Company is America’s oldest major manufacturer of soft drink concentrates. • After being severely injured in the Civil War, Atlanta pharmacist John Pemberton became addicted to morphine to ease his pain. Wanting to find a cure for his addiction, in 1866, he began experimenting with opium-free painkillers and came up with Pemberton’s French Wine Coca, proclaiming his popular invention a “nerve tonic” and “headache remedy.” When Atlanta enacted temperance laws, he was compelled to find an alcohol-free formula, with sugar replacing wine as the sweetener. His tonic became a refreshing soda fountain drink instead, known as Coca-Cola. Unfortunately, when Pemberton passed away at age 57, he was still addicted to morphine.
• Hubert Humphrey, U.S. Vice President from 1965 to 1968 under President Lyndon B. Johnson, got his start as a pharmacist in his dad’s South Dakota pharmacy. He went on to serve as the mayor of Minneapolis and a U.S. Senator before being chosen as LBJ’s running mate. Humphrey ran for President in 1968, but was unsuccessful in his attempt to defeat Richard Nixon.
• Pepsi-Cola also came from the efforts of a pharmacist, Caleb Bradham. In 1893, this New Bern, North Carolina pharmacist combined cola nut extract, vanilla, and “rare oils,” and called it Brad’s Drink. He invented it in an effort to help patrons improve their health, believing that his concoction aided digestion. Because the pepsin enzyme does in fact aid digestion, in 1898, Bradham renamed his beverage Pepsi-Cola, even though he didn’t add pepsin as an ingredient.
• Pharmacist Wilbur Scoville created the Scoville Organoleptic Test, a scale for measuring the hotness of chile peppers. A Scoville Unit is a measure of the chemical capsaicin found in hot
• Other favorite fountain drinks were brought to us by pharmacist Charles Hires, developer of Hires root beer, and James Vernor, who concocted ginger ale.

a great series. Why in Sam Hill did they cancel it, and to leave us hanging on who killed Longmire's wife? by Samantha Weaver • It was French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte who made the following sage observation: "Never interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake." • Given the notoriety Las Vegas enjoys as a place for quick weddings, you might be surprised to learn that, technically, it is illegal in that city for a mustachioed man to kiss a woman. • In 1923, a man named Frank Hayes earned the distinction of becoming the first (and so far only) person to win a horse race posthumously. Hayes was actually a trainer rather than a jockey, and he was riding a 20-1 underdog named Sweet Kiss. It seems that Hayes suffered a heart attack in the midst of the race, but his body stayed in the saddle while Sweet Kiss beat the odds to cross the finish line first. For the rest of her life, the horse he rode was nicknamed "Sweet Kiss of Death." • In his spare time, Jim Cummings, a successful voice actor, calls sick children in hospital wards and talks to them as some of his most famous characters, including Winnie the Pooh and Tigger. • Some state names have come to the English language through roundabout routes. Take Alaska, for example. The state name comes from the Aleut word "alaxsxaq," which in turn comes from the Russian meaning "the object toward which the action of the sea is directed." • Those who study such things say that even fish can have distinct personalities. Within a single species, scientists have observed that some fish are quite adventurous, willing to go to great lengths to obtain food or a mate, while others are much more timid, eschewing daring feats altogether. *** Thought for the Day: "If a man does his best, what else is there?" -- General George S. Apolo Ohno
A: The world-champion Olympic speed skater is deep in training for the Ironman World Championship, a 140.6-mile triathlon competition that takes place Oct. 11 in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. I spoke with Apolo recently, and it just so happens that another "DWTS" champ was an impetus behind Apolo's decision to compete. "Hines Ward completed his first Ironman challenge in Kona last year, and I was inspired by it," he said. "I had been thinking about doing it last year, but I was traveling so much, it didn't make sense. But I needed a challenge. I needed to inspire other people. I needed to inspire myself. I needed something that wasn't anything like speed skating." Apolo is excited to make his mark once competition gets under way, and he got some advice from Hines: "The first thing Hines said to me was, 'Brother, I'm praying for you.' He said to just enjoy it and to take my time. It's once-in-a-lifetime opportunity -- it's pretty incredible. I'm in a whole new place now. I'm more confident; I'm stronger; I'm getting leaner; and I can't wait to arrive in Kona. It's a good feeling." ***

A: This is just a sampling of irate reader letters I've received about the canceling of the much-loved A&E drama, and to tell you the truth, I have no idea why it was canceled. The show is A&E's mostwatched original drama series, and its season-three ratings had only a negligible dip from season two. His daily life was swept up in the chaotic energy of dogs and their owners, both species which seemed to gather in packs.

"OFF THE LEASH: A YEAR AT THE DOG PARK" by Matthew Gilbert (Thomas Dunne Books, $25.99) Reviewed by Larry Cox Anyone who has ever been owned by a dog will appreciate this delightful new book. When Boston Globe TV critic Matthew Gilbert began sharing his life with a Yellow Lab named Toby, certain adjustments had to be made. One of those adjustments was frequent visits to his local dog park.

Gilbert -- who describes himself as basically an indoor guy, regularly connected to his TV and computer, and steeped in the visual, digital world -- had to rethink his daily life, and sharing it with a canine was not an easy transition. He soon discovered Armory Park, overlooking
Serving Aventura, Dania Beach, Hallandale Beach, Hollywood, North Miami Beach and Sunny Isles Beach.
His visits to Armory Park were not always a walk in the park. For example, when dogs fight, their owners have been known to bare their teeth at each other, too. As dogs chase each other, steal each other's toys and occasionally act up, people sometimes are even less controlled than in the more civilized parts of their lives. Gilbert claims that in a dog park, feelings surface faster ... unedited. In other words, the owners often are off their leashes, too. Gilbert was especially surprised to find that his adventures with Toby at the dog park made him more spontaneous and, yes, playful. When he let go of Toby's leash, he also allowed himself to let go. This is a heart-warming, humorous book that connects on several levels. It is the first look at dog parks and the part they play in the lives of both humans and their fourlegged companions. ROASTED RED PEPPER Makes 1 pepper
For all their popularity, peppers are perplexing. There are the bell and the chili, there are some that start out sweet, then get a little hotter, and those that are hot, then get even hotter. There are so many varieties that botanists are still counting them. It helps when choosing peppers to understand at least some of the differences. Sweet peppers are the group that includes the bell, sweet cherry and sweet banana peppers. Most sweet peppers have thick flesh and are suitable for raw or cooked preparations, and they all have their own distinct flavor characteristics. Among the bell peppers alone, the taste will vary from the more pungent green to the very mellow yellow and gold. Hot peppers often are referred to as chili peppers and include the cayenne, jalapeno, hot banana, poblano and Anaheim. Some of these chilies also have thick flesh, and are good for raw as well as cooked preparations. Be aware of the heat scale before deciding on the right pepper for your dish.
PICK A PEPPER As fall approaches and the days grow shorter, most of the summer crops are winding down. There are a few undaunted vegetables, though, that have flourished through the change in seasons. They've been growing throughout a hot season and waiting until the very end, when temperatures begin to drop a little, to flower. At the end of our seasonal food pageant, peppers take the stage. The colorful display in the garden and at the markets is enough to inspire the most unimpressed cook. There's green, yellow, orange, red and even chocolate available in the pepper palette. We can't help ourselves; we pick a few up, maybe one of every color, for our culinary experiments. Peppers belong to an extensive tropical family of the capsicum plant, which is native to Mexico, and Central and South America. The discovery of this wild edible had a
Hot and sweet peppers are high in vitamins A, C and B-6, as well as carotenoids and flavonoids, which have been shown to have antioxidant and immune-enhancing benefits. While both sweet and hot peppers are members of the same family, the hot peppers are the ones that actually contain capsicum properties within its fruit. The medicinal and health benefits of capsicum are numerous, ranging from aiding in digestive health to pain treatment. Peppers are good roasted, stuffed, fried or pickled. Peppers can be the condiment or the main dish, and even sweet peppers will stand out in any dish you add them to. Roasted red peppers make delicious additions to salads, sauces, and soups. You can purchase water-packed roasted peppers in most grocery stores, or you can roast your own as described below. 1 large, firm red bell pepper. Wash pepper and place it over an open flame (such as a gas burner on the stove) or under the oven broiler. Turn pepper with tongs until skin is evenly charred on all sides. Transfer to a bowl and cover with a plate. Let stand 15 minutes, then rub off charred skin. Cut pepper in half, saving any juice, and remove seeds. Use immediately or refrigerate or freeze for later use. Source: Healthy Eating for Life to Prevent and Treat Cancer by Vesanto Melina, M.S., R.D.; recipe by Jennifer Raymond, M.S., R.D.

HOLLYWOOD -- Even before the Valentine's Day release of "50 Shades of Grey", its star, Jamie Dornan, is red hot. In October, he starts shooting the psychological thriller "Ninth Life of Louis Drax," from the Liz Jensen novel, and then in the spring, he'll play Commandant Pat Quinlin, who led United Nations soldiers into "The Siege of Jadotville." These two films are about as far as he can get from Christian Grey.

Sophia Loren, considered one of the last living movie stars from Hollywood's Golden Era, will be feted Nov. 12 by the American Film Institute. It also will mark the 50th anniversary of "Marriage, Italian Style," for which she received a best actress Oscar nomination in 1964. Sophia, who won the first best actress Oscar for a foreign language film ("Two Women," 1960), also starred in Hollywood films such as "Houseboat" with Cary Grant, "That Kind of Woman" opposite Tab Hunter, "It Started in Naples" with Clark Gable, "Arabesque" with Gregory Peck, "The Countess From Hong Kong" opposite Marlon Brando (directed by the great Charles Chaplin), "Man of La Mancha" with Peter O'Toole, "The Voyage" with Richard Burton, "Grumpier Old Men" with Jack Lemmon, Walter Matthau and Ann-Margret, and 2009's "Nine" with three-time Oscar winner
Film makers are forever fascinated with Abraham Lincoln. In 2012, "Lincoln" won Daniel Day-Lewis his third Oscar, and despite its $65 million price tag still grabbed $275 million at the box office. Now a documentary film, "The Gettysburg Address," written, produced and directed by Sean Conant, is coming our way. It has a great cast that includes Jason Alexander, Ed Asner, Matthew Broderick, Sam Elliott, Cary Elwes, Delmot Mulroney, George Takei, Tom Brokaw ... and David Morse as Lincoln. Not all historic films succeed. "Parkland," released last year, was produced by Tom Hanks and Bill Paxton, and cost $10 million to make. Despite The Washington Post ranking it the sixth-best film made about the assassination of President John F. Kennedy and a great cast that included Billy Bob Thornton, Tom Welling, Paul Giamatti, Zac Efron, Colin Hanks, Ron Livingston and Marcia Gay Harden, it only grossed $1.4 million. People apparently weren't interested in the hospital or staff that treated JFK after his assassination. How the mighty have fallen! Piers Morgan, who went from London tabloid writer to a judge on "America's Got Talent" and then Larry King's talkshow replacement, has been named the most hated personality from the United Kingdom on Twitter. Guess he's not well-liked by his PEERS! (c) 2014 King Features Synd., Inc.

News We Can Use: FLU SHOTS
Yoga Boosts Memory Yoga is thought of as an umbrella term for various forms of the discipline, but some kinds of yoga are said to be better for seniors than others. A study done by the University of Illinois focused on Hatha yoga, which uses specific poses with flowing movements, meditation and breathing. Researchers divided seniors ranging from 55 to 79 years of age into two groups. One group did the specific Hatha yoga steps, and the other did toning and stretching. The results: Those who took the yoga classes three times a week for eight weeks had better information recall (faster and more accurate), as well as mental flexibility. They experienced "significant improvements in working memory capacity." What's key: The half of the participants who did only stretching and toning in-
stead of yoga didn't have the same cognitive performance results. There are, however, dozens of other forms of yoga for seniors to explore, and classes are popping up everywhere, as well as for tai chi and qigong. After taking yoga, tai chi and qigong classes, here is my assessment: Yoga (any kind) involves painful poses, some on the floor. Tai chi is done standing up, but poses are complicated. Qigong has gentle, flowing movements done standing up. All of them offer benefits for strength, flexibility, balance, stress reduction -- and memory, in my estimation. Your best bet is to find a yoga, tai chi or qigong class specifically for seniors, perhaps one that's taught by your local senior center or hospital. Ask questions in advance. If you have a computer, go online to search yoga, tai chi and qigong individual-
Late September or early October is not too soon to get your flu shot. Now would be a good time to plan for it. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says the flu season can start as early as the beginning of October. Did you know: There's a special high-dose flu vaccine for seniors age 65 and older? The reason is that the regular dose doesn't always protect us because our immune system often is weakened. This vaccine is four times as strong, setting up a better immune response. Did you know: That Medicare will pay for the vaccine? (As will most insurance under the Affordable Care Act.) Did you know: You don't have to go to your doctor to get the flu shot. There are numerous other locations. To find a flu shot in your area, begin scouting the Internet at sites like cvs.com or flushot.healthmap.org, or call your local pharmacy.
MEDICARE OPEN ENROLLMENT Open enrollment for Medicare begins Oct. 15 to change from the Original to an Advantage Plan, or vice versa. Don't confuse this with the Health Insurance Marketplace, which opens enrollment a month later. As a Medicare beneficiary, it's illegal for a Marketplace company to sell you a Marketplace plan, so don't be taken in. But there is a caveat: If you have a Marketplace plan and think you'll sign up for Medicare later, beware that you might be subject to a lifelong penalty if you enroll late. Because of the variety of situations (Marketplace versus Medicare, Part A versus Parts A and B), your best bet is to get advice from Medicare before the signup period begins if you're now moving from Marketplace to Medicare. Prediabetes Increases Cancer Risk Prediabetes increases the risk of cancer, according to a meta-analysis published in Diabetologia. Researchers analyzed 16 studies that included 891,426 participants worldwide. Prediabetes increased the risk of developing cancer by 15 percent, particularly for liver, endometrial, and stomach or colorectal cancers. The study notes that lifestyle changes can treat or even prevent this condition. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 86 million American adults—more than one-third of the adult population have prediabetes.
Obesity Changes Your Eating Habits Obesity may change the types of foods you choose, according to an article published online in Molecu-
lar Psychiatry. Researchers at the National Institutes of Health examined brain scans of 43 participants. Obese individuals showed alterations in the function of dopamine, a brain chemical associated with pleasure, which led to overeating and made food less gratifying but more habit-forming. Researchers concluded that environmental cues such as smells and marketing may affect a heavier person more, compared with a slimmer individual, and increase his or her susceptibility to select and overconsume unhealthful foods.
Potassium Helps Prevent Stroke A diet rich in potassium reduces the risk of stroke for postmenopausal women, according to a study published online in the American Heart Association journal Stroke. Researchers analyzed potassium intake from 90,137 postmenopausal women as part of the Women’s Health Initiative Observational Study. Women who consumed the most potassium reduced their risk of all stroke types by 12 percent and lowered their risk of ischemic stroke (stroke due to clot formation) by 16 percent,

Why Is Traveling So Tiresome? DEAR DR. ROACH: Traveling for a length of time -- say, six hours or more -- on a train, bus or plane makes me rather tired. Others I discussed this with have had similar experiences. I find this strange, because for most of the travel time I am sitting doing nothing but reading or daydreaming. My question is: Do physiological changes taking place in the body brought on by the long period of sitting while in transit account for the fatigue, or is it simply mental boredom? -- R.S. ANSWER: I think it's both mental and physical. Prolonged sitting recently has

compared with those who consumed the least amount. The reduction in risk was even greater among women who had normal blood pressure, compared with those who had high blood pressure. High potassium intake was also associated with a reduced risk from death by all causes, compared with the lowest intake, during the 11 years of follow-up. This study suggests that all women should consume more potassium from foods like sweet potatoes, bananas, and white beans to meet or exceed daily recommendations. ANSWER: Mom was partially right. Orange juice will lose its vitamins over time, especially if it gets warm. But that doesn't happen in five minutes. Products that sit on the shelf for a long time lose their vitamins. As a student in organic chemistry, I did an experiment to find how much vitamin C was in certain products. Fresh fruits and vegetables (especially red bell peppers) had a great deal. A canned juice purportedly high in C had none at all. Even vitamin C tablets had lost 20 percent of their stated value even before their expiration date.

Orange juice containers will swell if bacteria in the juice release gas, at which point it should (obviously) be discarded. However, I wonder if the swelling in five minutes has to do with the air in the carton expanding due to the relative warmth of the air compared with the refrigerator.

ANSWER: These sounds like splinter hemorrhages. The most common cause of these is trauma to the nail bed, but some dermatologic conditions can cause this as well, such as psoriasis and lichen planus. FEET OF CLAY Let's imagine a world where guys like Ray Rice really mattered to the average person. If ever there was such a place, it was Piscataway, N.J. Rice, you see, used to be the town's favorite son and was the poster child whose smiling visage once adorned the pillars of Rutgers Stadium. Now he is the poster child for domestic abuse in America. At first, the town didn't want to believe what they had heard, that Rutgers' alltime greatest running back -a Super Bowl champion, Pro Bowler and All-American -had cold cocked his fiancee in an Atlantic City elevator. That he dragged her unconscious body out through the lobby as attendants watched and did nothing. "He was the nicest guy," came the refrain from the sports bars of Manalapan, Spotsboro and Edison. "He'd do anything for you!" While the Giants were getting beaten up on "Monday Night Football," restaurant workers paused to gather around the manager's smartphone so they could

Some will say that was important because it led to real change. The NFL would go on to suspend Rice "indefinitely" and institute new rules. Penalties against players -- convicted or not -- now will now be a six-game suspension for a first offense and a banishment of at least one year for a second offense. Also, they will undergo some sort of "training."
The real message, as always, has to come from the ultimate authority in cases like this, and I'm not talking about commissioners, judges, clergy or team owners. The last time I checked, the rules had already been made quite clear: Love thy neighbor. It's that simple, but it's not easy.
Of course, it doesn't go far enough. What are we teaching kids who go to games, wives at tailgate parties, fans rooting for their teams when they see guys like Rice take the field? What message does it send when the camera pans to guys like Michael Vick, who oversaw the torture of animals in his basement for years? That it's OK to do those things if you can move the ball downfield?

see the video of Rice beating a woman senseless. Even the idiots who first said, "What? Did she hit him first?" came away shaking their heads. "That's not right." Neither was the way the NFL had handled the situation up to that point. The guy who was booked last March on charges of thirddegree assault hardly had the book thrown at him by Roger Goodell or the Ravens ownership. They suspended the guy for two games. One game for every punch he landed in the elevator. Seeing, as they say, is believing, and that video took the very real problem of domestic violence out of the elevators, out of the kitchens, out of the bedrooms and basements, parking lots, and most notably, it took Rice out of the locker room.

• Review your apartment's lease and information packet today. These papers include instructions on contacting leasing management or maintenance in an emergency. • In emergencies such as water leaks, apartment communities normally specify that maintenance will be on site within 24 hours, and often much sooner. Take note of their exact time frames. • Familiarize yourself with the apartment's water shutoff valves. You will at least have shutoffs under the sink (for the hot and cold water) and behind/beside the toilet. There also should be a shutoff for the water heater (if it's inside your apartment).

• If a water leak occurs, locate the source of the leak as quickly as possible. Close the nearest shutoff valve, if possible. Put a bucket underneath the leak and use towels to sop up any spilled water. • Contact the leasing office or the maintenance number immediately. Describe the problem, its location and the time that the leak occurred. • If it's after hours (and these emergencies always seem to happen after hours), the on-call maintenance person should call you back, usually within an hour, to provide further instructions. What if there's no shutoff for the pipe that's leaking? The most important thing is to try and minimize the water damage until the water can be shut off (sometimes the shutoff is located elsewhere in the apartment building

and can only be accessed by maintenance). Keep a bucket under the area and empty it before it gets too full. What if maintenance takes days to address the leak? Keep a record of dates and times of the calls you made, and when the repair was made. Meantime, if maintenance can't get to the building for some reason -- such as a snowstorm -- ask the on-call person if the shutoff is accessible so that you can stop the water from flowing in. HOME TIP: Apartment residents need to be just as familiar as homeowners with the locations of water shutoff valves and electrical panel shutoffs, so they can react quickly in a maintenance emergency. THE FALSE ECONOMY OF PINCHING PENNIES Sometimes in our quest to save a dollar, we go a bit overboard. It's a false economy to always go for the lowest cost -especially if it ends up costing more in the end. Here are some examples: • Groceries: If your family won't eat it, store brands or food bought in bulk aren't bargains. • Installment plans: Renting to own a roomful of furniture or television for a small amount per week sounds like a great deal, until you do the math. Figure out what you're actually paying. It could be double the price of a similar item on sale.

Don't put used shoes on your child. Make that one place you splurge. • Insurance: Opting for a much higher deductible could be costly in the long run. Unless you have the full amount of the deductible safely put away in savings, you could take a hard hit if something happens and you need that coverage.

FRAME AND BOOKMARK SUMMER MEMORIES Weekends are made for families, and fall is all about the changing color palette of the great outdoors. Put them together, and you have the potential for awesome adventures in your neighborhood and beyond. When you get home, keep the memory alive with these two hands-on activities using found materials -- free from nature.
SAY IT WITH FLOWERS Preserve the last of your garden flowers in bookmarks. Gather a colorful assortment of small blooms and leaves. Spread them between sheets of wax paper and press them flat by topping with heavy books. Let them dry for about a week.
Cut several 6-inch-by-2-inch pieces of poster board. Arrange the pressed flowers and leaves on one side of each one. Glue in place using a paintbrush dipped in household glue. When dry, cover the decorated side only with a piece of clear Con-Tact self-adhesive covering. Trim overlapping edges. Punch a hole in the top, and tie a ribbon or tassel through it to finish the bookmark. Turn it over and use a ruler and a marker to make 10 lines. Every time your child reads a book, write down the title on one line.
FRAME A MEMORY When you admire the flowers and plants growing in your garden and

neighborhood, have you ever thought of them as a rainbow of color? For fun, name the colors you observe, take a photo and display it in a natural frame. Cut out the front side of a medium-size cereal box, or cut a piece of corrugated cardboard from a packing box the size you wish your frame to be. Using a sharp pair of scissors, an adult should cut out a rectangular shape in the middle, slightly smaller than the size of the photo or drawing you are framing. Put a few globs of glue on the cardboard and affix strips of found tree bark all over until completely covered. Glue four thin sticks or woody stems to the outside edges to frame the frame, then add decorations such as moss and pinecones. Let dry. Affix the photo to a piece of cardboard cut slightly
larger than the cut out portion of the frame. Tape it to the back. To hang on a bulletin board or wall, glue or tape a metal flip tab from a soda can to the back of the frame. A nail or pushpin will fit through the hole.
