SKIN AND BONES
18280 West Dixie Hwy. North Miami Beach
by Kathy Wolfe “Why, you’re just skin and bones!” you may have heard it said. While the human body is lots more than skin and bones, these two things account for a very large part. Follow along as Tidbits explores what holds us together. • “I’ve got you under my skin,” goes the old song. The skin is the largest of all the organs in the body, and makes up about 15% of the body’s weight. On the average adult body, it weighs about 6 lbs. (2.72 kg), with an area of about 20 square feet (1.86 sq. m). The average individual has about 300 million skin cells. There are about 11 miles (17.7 km) of blood vessels in the body’s skin. • Discount Pharmacy and Medical Supplies • Most Insurances and Medicare & Medicaid Accepted

• One square inch (6.45 sq. cm) contains about 19 million cells, 90 oil glands, 65 hairs, and 625 sweat glands. There are 19 feet (5.8 m) of blood vessels and over 19,000 sensory cells in that square inch. Those sensory cells can detect an object as small as 1/100th of a millimeter.

• The skin is made up of three layers – the epidermis, which is the outer layer, the middle layer called the dermis, and the deepest layer called the subcutis. The epidermis is thickest on the palms of the hands and soles of the feet, about 1.5 millimeter thick. The subcutis contains blood vessels, hair follicle roots, and nerves.

SKIN AND BONES (continued):
• When a person is born, skin is about 1 millimeter thick and will grow to about 3 millimeters by adulthood. • The body’s three million sweat glands will produce about two quarts (1.9 liters) of fluid on a warm summer day. When sweat evaporates off the skin, body heat is reduced. Sweat glands are the most concentrated on the bottom of the feet, with the least concentration on the body’s back. The smell of sweat is affected by a person’s mood, diet, hormones, medical condition, or drugs. • Our skin is thinnest on our
eyelids, just 0.02 m thick. • Why does our skin bruise? It’s caused by blood capillaries that burst near the skin’s surface. The blood cells quickly die and change color, creating the purplish bruise. The bruise fades as those cells are carried off by the body. • And why does our skin tan when we’re out in the sun? It’s the result of our skin secreting melanin, a brown pigment that helps block out harmful ultraviolet rays. Thousands of years ago, when dark-skinned humans migrated to colder climates,
much of their melanin pigment was lost and white skin began to appear.
women is bothered by acne. That figure is just one in 100 for adult men.
• There are two types of melanin – pheomelanin, which varies from yellow to red in color, and eumelanin, which is dark brown to black. Pheomelanin is responsible for our pink lips and for red hair color. Eumelanin contributes to brown and black skin and hair. A person with a complete or partial absence of melanin is known as an albino.
• The next time you’re doing the dusting, consider that 75% of household dust consists of dead skin cells. Every minute, you are shedding about 30,000 dead skin cells. By the time you’re 70, you will have shed about 40 lbs. (18.1 kg) of dead skin.
• Skin that is glabrous has no hair. • Acne, caused by an overproduction of oil that plugs the pores, afflicts more than just teenagers. One in 20 adult
• Skin cancer is the most common of all cancers, accounting for almost half of cancer diagnoses in the United States. There will be about 76,000 new cases of melanoma, the most serious type of skin cancer, this year. Pale skin that sunburns easily is more susceptible to skin cancer. Severe sunburns in
the past along with excessive unprotected exposure to sunlight or tanning booths are also contributing factors. Melanoma is the fastest growing cancer worldwide, and one in 50 Americans will develop it during their lifetime. • About 45% of bone consists of mineral deposits, including calcium, phosphorus, and sodium, along with the protein collagen. Living tissue, cells, and blood vessels make up another 30%, with the remaining 25% water. • Bones account for about 14% of the body’s total weight. A baby is born with about 300 bones, but as it grows, many fuse together, so that by adulthood the total is 206. When a baby is born, its kneecaps consist of soft cartilage which will gradually harden into bone, a process known as ossification. • The longest and strongest bone of the skeleton is the femur, the thighbone, accounting for nearly 25% of a body’s height. The femur can support 30 times its own weight. The largest bone is the pelvis, and the smallest is located in the middle ear. The tiny stapes, commonly called the stirrup is only 0.11 inches (2.8 mm) long, about the size of a grain of rice. It’s the only bone that’s fully grown at birth. • The parts of the body with
most bones are the arms and hands with a total of 60. Legs and feet are next with 58, followed by the 26 vertebrae. Most people have 24 ribs and our skull contains 22 bones. One out of 20 individuals has an extra rib, usually males. You can expect your ribs to move about 5 million times over the course of the next year. They move every time we breathe! • Bone tissue is constantly growing slowly. Over a seven-year period, every bone in the body is completely replaced. • The only bone in the body that does not touch another bone is the hyoid bone. You can find this V-shaped bone above the larynx where it secures the muscles of the tongue. • If the amount of calcium in the bloodstream is too low, the body pulls the calcium reserves from the bones, which will eventually cause the bones to thin (the condition known as osteoporosis), or break. • The most common broken bones among adults are the arm and the ankle. However, in children, it’s the collarbone that’s most frequently broken. • “A sound heart is the life of the flesh; but envy the rottenness of the bones” – Proverbs 14:30.

FAMOUS CANADIANS:
JOHN CANDY Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, funny man John Candy made us all laugh with his comedy roles. Let’s look at his Canadian roots and subsequent success. • Candy was a native of Newmarket, Ontario. At age four, he lost his 35-year-old car salesman father to a heart attack, an event that followed John Candy his entire life. He attended a strict Catholic high school, where he was active in football and hockey. An injury brought his athletic ambitions to an end, but it allowed Candy to pursue his love of comedy and acting. He improved his skills at Toronto’s Centennial Community College, modeling his comedy after the likes of Abbott & Costello, Jackie Gleason, and the Three Stooges. • After a few bit parts in Canadian TV, Candy encountered fellow Canadian and struggling young comedian Dan Aykroyd, who persuaded him to try out for the Second City improvisational comedy troupe in Toronto. Candy was invited to join the main troupe in Chicago, where he united with other upcoming stars including Gilda Radner, John Belushi, Eugene Levy, and Bill Murray. This group became part of a new TV series called SCTV in 1976, of which Candy’s impersonations of celebrities was a huge part. • Candy began getting significant roles in 1979, beginning with Steven Spielberg’s 1941, alongside his friend Dan Aykroyd. He appeared again with Akyroyd the following year in the hit The Blues Brothers. 1981 brought a role in Stripes, then another in 1983’s National Lampoon’s Vacation. But his breakout role was in 1984’s Splash, a comedy about a mermaid who washes ashore, in which he played Tom Hanks’ brother.
• Candy is also fondly remembered for his role in 1987’s Spaceballs and Planes, Trains, & Automobiles. Candy’s success of 1989 was the wildly-popular Uncle Buck. • Even with the success of Home Alone in 1990, Candy’s career took a bit of a dive, as he appeared in several unsuccessful films in the early part of the decade. He renewed his success with a dramatic role in Oliver Stone’s JFK, and in 1993’s Cool Runnings, in which he played the coach of the real-life first Jamaican bobsled team. • Candy’s leisure activities included his 20-acre farm 50 miles (80 km) north of Toronto, where he and his wife were raising their two children. In 1991, he also became part owner, along with Wayne Gretzky and Bruce McNall, of the Canadian Football League’s Toronto Argonauts. • John Candy appeared in 40 feature films over the course of his career. • With both his father’s and grandfather’s deaths from heart attacks always in the back of his mind, the 325-lb. (147kg) Candy often tried crash diets and joined gyms. However, his success was brief and fleeting, with the weight always finding its way back. At one time, his weight ballooned to 375 lbs. (170 kg) and his waistline grew to 59 inches (150 cm). He also smoked a pack of cigarettes a day, which, along with the weight and lack of exercise, contributed to his death by heart attack in 1994 at age 43 while filming the western comedy Wagons East in Mexico. The film was released five months after Candy’s death, with several scenes needing to have his image digitally inserted.

ROCKEFELLER CENTER TREE Every year on the Wednesday after Thanksgiving, the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree is lit between West 48th and West 51st Streets in midtown Manhattan in New York City. Here’s a glimpse into the history of this tradition. • Construction began on Rockefeller Center in May of 1930, a cluster of 14 buildings in an Art Deco style. Its centerpiece is the 70-floor, 872-foot (266 m) GE Building located at 30 Rockefeller Plaza, formerly known as the RCA Building, and nicknamed 30 Rock. Today the complex consists of 19 commercial buildings covering 22 acres. • On Christmas Eve, 1931, in the midst of the Great Depression, a group of 30 construction workers dragged a 20-ft. (6.1-m) balsam fir tree through the muddy construction site and decorated it with strings of cranberries, paper garlands, and tin cans. In 1933, the year that 30 Rock opened, the tree became an official holiday tradition with the first lighting ceremony.

• An eight-ton bronze sculpture of the Greek Titan Prometheus bringing fire to mankind was installed in early 1934 and is a prominent feature in the plaza. On Christmas Day, 1936, the Center’s ice skating rink was opened. Its popularity has grown to the point that today over a quarter million people skate there every year. • Usually a Norway spruce, the tree must have a minimum height of 65 feet (20 m). The height is limited to 110 feet (34 m) due to the width of Manhattan’s streets. The tallest Christmas tree at the Center was in 1999, a Norway spruce from Connecticut, 100 feet (30 m) tall. Since 1999, the tree has come from one of four states – New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, or Pennsylvania. • A crane supports the chosen tree while it is cut, after which it is moved to a custom-made telescoping trailer for transport to the Center. • During the 1950s and 1960s, the tree was topped with a 4-ft. (1.2 m) plastic star, which was later changed to a fiberglass and gold-leaf star. Since 2004, the tree has been topped by a Swarovski crystal star weighing 550 lbs. (250 kg). The star stands 10 feet (3 m) tall and is made up of 25,000 crystals with a total of one million facets. • Televised broadcasts of the lighting began in 1946, and in 1951, NBC began its televised ritual of the tree lighting, going live on The Kate Smith Show, hosted by the “first lady of radio.”

• In 1971, Rockefeller Center went green when it recycled the tree for the first time, grinding it into 30 three-bushel bags of mulch to cover the nature trails of upper Manhattan. Further environmental efforts were begun in 2007, when the tree was lit with 30,000 LED lights for the first time. This resulted in a savings of 1,200 kilowatt hours less electricity per day over the tree’s old incandescent bulbs. That’s enough to power a 2,000-sq-ft house for a month! That year, the tree was used to donate lumber for a Habitat for Humanity house construction. • This year the Rockefeller Center tree will remain lit until January 7, 2015, the day of the feast of Epiphany.

"Texts From Jane Eyre" by Mallory Ortberg (Henry Holt and Co., $23) Reviewed by Ealish Waddell Updated versions of classic stories are nothing new, but the recently released "Texts From Jane Eyre" offers a pretty innovative take on the genre: If characters from classic books were real, and they had access to data plans, what would they text? From ancient myths to Harry Potter, and Jane Austen to "The Hunger Games," famous fictional figures have been retrofitted with smartphones and the worldview of a particularly cynical 21st-century twentysomething. The resulting epistles make for hilarious glimpses into their not-so-everyday lives through a lens that is extremely warped but still crystal-clear. Text messages have a shorthand language all their own, and Ortberg employs it deftly to subtly indicate personality traits and narrative nuances. Of course, the dramatic Edward Rochester types in ALL CAPS. Of course, flirty Scarlett O'Hara is into sexting. Of course, the Lorax won't shut up about composting. Typos and bad grammar abound (you try to type neatly when a raven won't stop

Given the concentrated nature of the vignettes, the effect is strongest when the reader actually knows the story being skewered -the spotlight here is mostly pointed at characters, not plots. But even unfamiliar tales can benefit from a good goosing, highlighting common themes that run again and again through literature from ancient times to the most modern works. The high-school English class staples are here, like "Wuthering Heights" and "Great Expectations," but so are "Sweet Valley High" and "The Babysitters Club." Slice squash in half lengthwise and scoop out seeds. Place on a vegetable steamer in a large pot. Cover and steam until fork-tender, 40 to 60 minutes. While the squash cooks, sauté onion, mushrooms, garlic, basil, oregano, and thyme in oil in a medium skillet. When mushrooms are brown, add tomatoes and 1/4 cup parsley and simmer about 10 minutes, or until most of the liquid is evaporated. Add 1/2 teaspoon salt.
CROPS IN SEASON… FRESH IS BEST!
In a separate pan, melt margarine and stir in flour. Cook 30 seconds, then whisk in the soymilk and cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until thickened. Keep warm. Preheat oven to 350°F. When squash is tender and cool enough to handle, place both halves in a baking dish. Sprinkle with salt and black pepper. Divide white sauce between two squash halves and spread evenly, then top each with half the vegetable mixture. Bake for 20 minutes.

HOLLYWOOD -- Meryl Streep will transform herself into an opera singer, opposite Hugh Grant, when they start shooting "Florence Foster Jenkins" in May. Director Stephen Frears ("Philomena" and "The Queen") will turn Meryl into the real-life heiress/socialite, who lived from 1868-1944. She was a soprano known and ridiculed for her lack of rhythm, pitch, tone, aberrant pronunciation and generally poor singing ability. Meryl should have a field day with this one!

*** Stephen Collins, the pastor patriarch of "Seventh Heaven," recently made headlines when his wife of 27 years, actress Faye Grant, released marriage-counseling session tapes that allegedly revealed Collins' inappropriate behavior with two young girls some 30 years ago. No charges were ever filed, but when she leaked the tapes to the media, Collins was fired from the sequel to "Ted" and a recurring role on "Scandal." Despite monthly spousal support of $13,000, Grant has been angling for a bigger share of the $12 million Collins has amassed from his TV and film work. But the laugh is on her, because her second set of divorce lawyers have asked her to find other representation. The couple has already spent more than $1 million in legal fees.

*** We're sad to report the passing of Carol Ann Susi, from cancer, at age 62. She was the voice of Howard Wolowitz's mother (mostly off-screen) on the top-rated CBS comedy "The Big Bang Theory." Ironically, her first acting job also was my first acting job, on the series "Kolchek: The Night Stalker." In the 1974 episode titled "They Have Been, They Are, They Will Be," I played Leon Van Heusen, a TV repairman by day and a seeker of UFO's by night who goes into the woods with communication equipment to contact aliens. Carol Ann played Monique Marmelstein, Darren McGavin's secretary in many of the episodes that followed. I turned to photography and writing; she went on to appear in many shows, including "Grey's Anatomy," "King of Queens," "Seinfeld" and the film "Death Becomes Her" with Meryl Streep and Goldie Hawn.
Meryl Streep *** James Maslow, who starred for four years on "Big Time Rush," dazzled us on season 18 of "Dancing With the Stars" and has danced himself into the new Sony Crackle series, "Sequestered," with Patrick Warburton and Jesse Bradford, and the upcoming thriller film "Wild is the Night." He can sing, dance and act, and he's only 24. That's what we call fancy footwork. *** Was Randy Jackson asked to leave "American Idol" after 12 seasons of judging and one season of being a mentor? Q: Can you tell me when "The Following" will return to TV. It did get picked up for another season, right? -- Steve F., via email A: The Kevin Bacon-starring suspense thriller will be back for a third season with 15 new episodes beginning Monday, March 2, with a two-hour season premiere (and picking up the following week in its 9/8c time slot). Also on tap for early 2015 premieres: "Bones" returns from it winter hiatus March 26 at 8/7c; "Glee" makes a move to Fridays starting with its premiere on Jan. 9 (also a two-hour premiere); and "American Idol" returns for its 14th season, sans Randy Jackson, on Jan. 7 at 8/7c. Ryan Seacrest, Jennifer Lopez, Keith Urban and Harry Connick Jr. will be back, and Adam Lambert will be filling in for Keith as a guest judge during the New York auditions. Keith took time off from the show in order to be with his wife, Nicole Kidman, after the death of her father.
A: The latest reboot of the classic sci-fi action series, which is called "Terminator: Genisys," will be in theaters July 1, 2015. I recently spoke with Teri Wyble -- who plays Mariam, a member of John Connor's inner circle of the resistance -- and she revealed a tiny bit of info to whet fans' appetites. "It begins with John Connor, who's continuing the war against the machines. I worked with Jason Clarke (who plays John Connor) a bunch. He had such a commanding presence, and I think he is so incredibly talented and so captivating." The question on everyone's mind: Did she work with Arnold? "I was able to meet pretty much everyone for the readthrough. We did a table read and so just reading the script with people like Jason Clark and Jai Courtney (Kyle Reese) and Emilia Clarke (Sarah Connor) and Arnold Schwarzenegger -- just being in that room with these people was pretty darn cool. I hope I can remember little moments like that, like being in
that room when Arnold's saying some of his famous lines." *** Q: I've gotta have my "Justified"! -Freddie F., via email A: You'll have it, Freddie, in just a few more weeks. The hit FX Western series will be back for its sixth and final season on Jan. 20 at 10 p.m., with Sam Elliott and Garret Dillahunt joining the cast. Get ready for that much-anticipated Raylan/Boyd final showdown! *** Readers: I have great news for all you "Longmire" fans! You asked, and Netflix listened. The streaming video website has picked up the former A&E series -- which was canceled earlier this year after three seasons -- for a 10-episode fourth season. The beloved Western crime drama will return sometime in 2015 -- an exact date has not yet been announced. According to Netflix, season four picks up moments after season three's exciting finale. ANXIETY CAN TRIGGER ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE Many times anxiety is a good thing. It keeps us alert and paying attention in situations where there might be danger or concerns. Then, once the problem has passed, the anxiety fades away. Anxiety doesn't always disappear, however -- and it can have consequences when it doesn't: Chronic anxiety in those who have mild cognitive impairment can increase the risk of Alzheimer's disease, as well as the speed with which it develops. While studies have looked at the link between depression and Alzheimer's, until now there was no research looking at mild cognitive impairment, anxiety and Alzheimer's. A recent three-year study in Canada concluded that mild
Anxiety disorders are anxieties that last for six months or more and come with a host of symptoms and names: obsessive-compulsive disorder, social phobia, generalized anxiety disorder and others. All have different treatments, ranging from drugs to cognitive behavior therapy to psychotherapy. What they have in common is that the faster the treatment, the better and sooner the outcome. If you wonder whether you have an anxiety disorder, the first step is to check in with your doctor. He'll be able to tell whether it's anxiety or a medical condition causing the anxiety. Once you're getting treatment, the National Institutes of Health has some suggestions. Consider a support group for anxiety issues -- even if it's an online chat room -stress management and meditation techniques, and even exercise. can have several causes. In adolescents, some transient gynecomastia is normal and usually resolves by itself. In middle-age and older men, medications (such as spironolactone, a common diuretic), liver disease and abnormal hormone levels (both sex hormones and thyroid) are the most common causes, but much of the time, no cause can be found. Since gynecomastia in rare circumstances can be a symptom of a serious disease, and endocrinologists are commonly expert in this evaluation, I would agree that you should get evaluated. It is important to be sure you do not have male breast cancer, and a mammogram may be necessary. A careful exam, blood hormone levels and sometimes a testicular ultrasound to look for hormone-producing tumors are part of the evaluation. Treatment is of any underlying cause that may be found. If no cause is found, many men prefer surgery or liposuction to remove the breast tissue. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I have arthritis in both knees, injuries from the past. Plant-Based Diet Reduces Migraine Pain A plant-based diet reduces migraine pain, according to a new study in the Journal of Headache and Pain. Forty-two adult migraine sufferers were either assigned to consume a low-fat plant-based diet or take a placebo supplement for 16 weeks. Participants then switched groups for a second 16-week period. During the diet period, participants consumed a plant-based diet and then an elimination diet to remove foods that are common migraine pain triggers. The severity of the worst headache pain improved significantly during the plant-based diet period, compared to the supplement period. The decline in migraine pain may have been due to the elimination of dietary pain triggers such as meat and dairy products or by weight loss or hormonal changes brought on by the diet change.

New Mega-Study Shows Plant-Based Diets Are Effective as Diabetes Treatment People with diabetes looking for a more powerful treatment should consider a plantbased diet, according to a team of American and Japanese researchers. Combining the results of six prior studies, the researchers found that a plant-based diet significantly improves blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes. Earlier studies had shown that plant-based diets could improve a key indicator of blood sugar control, called hemoglobin A1c, as much as 1.2 points, which is far greater than the effect of typical oral diabetes medicines. The new study is a meta-analysis, widely considered the highest level of scientific evidence. Focusing on longer-term effects and combining the results of all available studies, the benefit of leaving out meat, cheese, and eggs was as much as 0.7 points in some studies, and averaged about 0.4 points overall. ANSWER: Well, I must admit to some bias here as an internist. I would recommend starting with a rheumatologist, an expert in medical treatment of joint problems, or an internist, rather than going first to a surgeon. While orthopedic surgeons certainly have expertise in all kinds of treatment (both medical and surgical), I reserve the expertise of the orthopedic surgeons for the people with knee pain who, after a medical evaluation, I think might benefit from surgery. Knee pain is such a common problem that any rheumatologist will be expert in diagnosing your condition. There are many kinds of arthritis, each with different treatments and prognoses. It's a good rule of thumb not to see a surgeon unless you think you need surgery, and you don't know enough yet to make that decision. *** DR. help her husband cut down on alcohol use. I recommended against ever drinking more than five drinks a day. Five per day (four for women) is the usual definition of binge drinking, and linked with high risk for serious medical and social problems. In no way did I mean to suggest that this is a healthy amount of drinking. While some studies have shown a reduced risk of heart disease among moderate (one to two drinks per day for men, one-half to one for women) drinkers, this is not proof that drinking is good for you. You have a "pie bird," which was sometimes placed in the middle of a pie before baking so it could support the pastry to prevent sagginess and allow steam to escape. These have become quite collectible in recent years. Although you didn't reveal how much you paid, many currently are selling on eBay and in shops in the $25-$50 range. Danger: Kids, Dogs Coming to Visit Q. I'm hosting the family over the holidays for the first time in my new home. But I'm a bit stressed as my siblings have kids and there will be a dog visiting. How can I make sure the kids don't get into my workshop or other danger areas? -- Bill in Utica, N.Y. A: The best way to keep them out of the workshop is to lock it up. But if that's not possible -- say, it's in the

If you have a pool, make sure the winter cover is secure and lock any doors that access the pool. Again, if that's not possible, make sure the family knows what areas are off limits, and ask parents to keep their kids in sight. There also are some danger areas inside the home, particularly for toddlers and pets. Move all chemicals and cleaning items out of common areas like the kitchen and laundry room, and store them on high shelves out of sight. Definitely don't store chemicals next to food or drinks. Make sure items like bread, chips or other foods are stored off the floor so that the dog can't get into them (eating people food isn't just unhealthy -- dogs pigging

out on lots of these items at once can suffer serious complications such as bloat). Cover all heating registers with appropriate grates that little hands and paws can't get through. If you're remodeling or working on an area of the house, clean up construction debris and tools, or close off the area. This sounds like a lot of hustling around worrying about every possible thing that can go wrong, but it's good to have your house organized safely at all times, anyway. Look at this as an opportunity to get those garden tools put away the way you always wanted, and to organize your home-improvement items. You won't have to worry about it again until next year. HOLIDAYS DON'T SLOW SCAMMERS Scams intended to separate you from your money have a tendency to follow both the season and the latest news headlines. The Federal Trade Commission
and security companies have alerts out right now that cover a wide range of topics and targets. Pets: Scammers want to
tug at your heartstrings and will post online photos of a pet that needs a home. The pet might either be free or cost several thousand dollars, but there will be shipping charges to get the animal to you. The key here is if sellers want payment via Western Union or MoneyGram. The FTC suggests doing a right click on the photo and selecting copy image location or a similar choice to hunt for other websites where the animal's photo has also been used. If you want to adopt a pet, consider your local humane society instead.

Free pizza: Scammers have duplicated a major chain's logo and want you to click a graphic to get a free pizza in celebration of the company's 55th anniversary. If you get this email, delete it. Clicking the coupon puts malware on your computer. Newspaper renewal: Scammers send out emails saying your subscription is about to expire and that you can renew right online. It's a rip-off. To be sure this doesn't happen, don't give subscriptions your email address. You'll automatically know it's a scam if you get mail from your newspaper or magazines. Call the magazine or newspaper to verify. Ebola charities: Scammers are all over this one, looking for donations that are supposedly to help orphans or for medical supplies. If you want to donate, do your homework to select a legitimate charity. Look online for GuideStar or Charity Navigator to investigate charities. Computers: If making online holiday purchases, be sure what site you're on. Don't follow links to get there; type it in yourself. Don't open e-cards unless you're sure who sent them; clicking can download malware to your computer. Beware free giveaways of flash drives, especially when sent to places of work as part of gift baskets; they also can download malware. Avoid holiday theme wallpaper for the computer or apps for the phone for the same reason: malware. Delivery attempt notice: Beware scammers who leaving a note on the door asking you to call to arrange delivery of a package. When you call, they try to get personal info before they'll deliver your package. There is no package.

all enjoy is catching. That's what the hunt for sea glass does for us."
COLLECTING SEA GLASS, SHELLS AND STONES "This one is really rare," says 5-year-old Jude, as he examines one of the pieces of cornflower blue sea glass he and his brother and grandmother collected along the California shoreline. "Oh, wait, this one might be rarer!" chimes in 7-yearold brother JD, as he sets a teal piece to the side of the mounds of sorted glass
they dumped out on the kitchen table from a big bowl of treasures. "Spending time with my seven young grandkids is about learning together and making discoveries that ignite the human spirit," says Jan Bowman, retired teacher. "Whether you are 6 or 60, connecting with one another around an activity we
Recently, after a big storm, I said, "Let's go to the coast this morning. I bet we'll find some rare sea glass that was churned up in the ocean and landed on the sand, just for us to find." Sure enough, nature's jewelry was dotting the beach. That's when they found a piece of yellow glass, possibly from Depression glass tableware. "It is considered extremely rare," she says. What is sea glass and what is the allure? Plain and simple, it's discarded glass that was cast into the ocean and lost at sea -- until some pieces came back in interesting shapes and sizes after being tumbled and chemically weathered. It's often castoffs from glass
factories, or discarded bottles from shipwrecks that broke and tumbled in the sea, decades and centuries ago. Nowadays, it's a hobby that knows no bounds, popular stateside to global shores from Australia to the U.K. Whether your family gets hooked on collecting sea glass, seashells or pretty rocks and pebbles along streams and around lakes, there's always fun to be had when you return home with pockets full of finds. Enjoy these easy-todo crafts using sea glass, shells or stones: • Frame a photo of your child at the beach where the sea glass or shells were found. Embellish the plain frame with a select few of the treasures glued to a corner. • Glue "finds" on the top of a small box in interesting patterns. Fill it with more summer souvenirs. • Tie thin cording around a find, knot it, and glue the knot in place for a memory-filled necklace. For inspiration and information on sea glass, find author Richard LaMotte's comprehensive book with photography by Celia Pearson, "Pure Sea Glass: Discovering Nature's Vanishing Gems" and "Pure Sea Glass Identification Deck" (www.seaglasspublishing.com).
