• In 1921, Ireland was divided into Northern and Southern Ireland by the British Parliament. Northern Ireland’s population was primarily Protestant British loyalists who wanted to remain a territory of the United Kingdom. Southern Ireland, primarily Roman Catholics, became a free state in 1922. Belfast has been the capital of Northern Ireland since 1921. Between 1969 and 2001, more than 1,600 people were killed in Belfast as the result of political violence.

• The world’s third-largest island, Ireland sits in the North Atlantic just west of Great Britain. It’s just slightly larger than the U.S. state of West Virginia, and ranks 120th in size in the nations of the world. The northeast corner of the island, appropriately named Northern Ireland, occupies about 17% of the area, and is a part of the United Kingdom. The Republic of Ireland occupies the remainder of the island.

(continued):
• “Eire” is the Irish name for the Republic of Ireland. The familiar Irish phrase “Erin Go Bragh” translates “Ireland forever” in Gaelic. • Since the late 1800s, English has been Ireland’s predominant first language. However, Irish Gaelic is listed in the Constitution of Ireland as the national and first official language. About 350,000 claim to be “fluent” in the ancestral Gaelic out of the island’s total population of about 6.5 million, although about 1.7 million say they can “speak it.” Oddly enough, the second most widely-spoken language in Ireland is Polish. • The “Mac” at the beginning of many Irish surnames means “son of,” while “O’” translates “grandson of” in Gaelic.
• The Irish flag consists of a stripe each of orange, white, and green. The orange stripe is representative of Irish Protestants, the green for the Irish Catholics, with the white stripe between the two signifying the hope for peace between them. • One might think that Ireland’s national symbol would be the familiar shamrock, but it’s actually the harp, making Ireland the only country with a musical instrument as its national symbol. Dublin’s Trinity College houses the oldest harp known to exist, dating back to at least 1300. • Althone, Ireland is home to the world’s oldest pub, Sean’s Pub, dating back to 900 AD. Built on the banks of the Shannon River by
• Dublin, the capital of the Republic of Ireland, was founded by the Vikings in the year 988. The city of Dublin has more parks per square mile than any other European capital. Over 97% of the city’s residents live within 330 yards (300 meters) of a park. • The Irish potato famine of the 1840s was the result of blight, a disease that destroyed the leaves and tubers of the plant. Years of unusually cool weather with large amounts of precipitation combined with the water mold Phytophthora infestans caused the potatoes to rot in the field year after year. Nearly half of Ireland’s population depended solely on the potato for food. As a result of the five-year blight, about one million Irish perished from starvation or famine-related diseas-

es. Another estimated two million emigrated away from Ireland, and the island’s population declined by nearly 25% between 1844 and 1851. The population has never returned to pre-famine levels. • In 1908, the Harland & Wolff shipyard in Belfast was expanded to accommodate the construction of two massive ocean liners, the Titanic and the Olympic. In April of 1912, the completed Titanic sailed out of Belfast to pick up passengers at ports in England, France, and Ireland for its maiden voyage. The last port of call was Queenstown, Ireland, where hundreds of Irish waited to immigrate to America. Four days later, the ship lay at the bottom of the North Atlantic, having hit an iceberg, 450 miles (725 km) short of their New York City destination. • Ireland did not enter World War II, choosing to remain a neutral country. • Although the name of Patrick is closely associated with the country of Ire-

land, it’s far from the most popular boy’s name. Jack is the number one name for boys there, with Patrick a distant 19th. • An athlete from Northern Ireland, which is part of the United Kingdom, has the choice of competing for either Great Britain or Ireland at the Olympic Games. • Ireland’s County Galway is home to some pretty long place names, including Muckanaghederdauhaulia, which means “marsh of the pigs between two seas,” and Carrowkeelanahaglass, meaning “a narrow green marshland by a stream.” The longest is Glassillaunvealnacurra, which translates “little green island of the mouth of the weir.” • Although Guinness is the world’s largest brewer of stout beer, Ireland is not the world’s largest consumer of beer, an honor that belongs to the Czech Republic. (Ireland is down the list at #4.) Brewed in the St. James’ Gate Brewery, Guinness has been in production since 1759.Today, the Guinness Storehouse is Ireland’s most popular tourist attraction. Located in a converted fermenta-
tion plant, it has been remodeled into the shape of a giant 7-floor, 14-million pint glass of Guinness. • If you plan to visit Ireland, it’s a good idea to learn some of their vernacular, such as “the black stuff,” referring to a pint of Guinness. “Doing a legger” means you’re fleeing from the scene. You might encounter an “eejit” or two, a person who you consider an idiot. If you’re “banjaxed,” it means you are broken, ruined, or no good. If a local asks if you want a bit of craic tonight, he’s not offering illegal drugs. It simply means he can find you a place to go where you can indulge in some genuine Irish fun. • The Irish are famous for their soda bread, which was only introduced to the country during the 1840s, when bicarbonate of soda came into use there. The bread consists of soft flour, salt, baking soda for leavening (as opposed to yeast used in other breads), and soured milk to moisten the flour and activate the soda. Traditional soda bread has a cross cut into the top with a knife to ward off the devil and protect the household.

NOTEWORTHY INVENTORS:
ALEXANDER GRAHAM BELL March 10 is Alexander Graham Bell Day, a good time to pay tribute to one of the most famous inventors of modern times. • A native Scotsman, born in Edinburgh in 1847, Bell came from a line of teachers of diction and elocution His grandfather was noted for his treatment of speech impediments as well as authoring books on the principles of correct speech. Bell’s father had developed “Visible Speech,” a method of teaching the deaf to talk by studying the anatomical position of the speaking organs while making different sounds. Bell’s mother was deaf; however, she was able to become a pianist, a skill she passed on to Alexander. • In his younger years, Bell was educated at home, then attended private and public schools for three years. Even as a youngster, his curious mind was busy with thoughts of inventions. At age 12, while visiting a friend’s family’s grain mill, Bell observed the slow process of husking the wheat grain. Within days he had created a device that combined rotating paddles and sets of nail brushes that dehusked the wheat. He also came up with a talking doll that said, “Mama.” • At age 16, Bell had already accepted a teaching position at the Weston House Academy, teaching elocution and music. The family moved to Canada in 1870 when Bell was 23, and two years later, he moved to Boston to open a school for the dear as well as privately tutor the hearing-impaired. One of his first students was Helen Keller. • Bell spent his evenings working on a device that would transmit the human voice over wires. He hired a skilled electrician Thomas Watson, to help him. When the wealthy father of one of his deaf students heard of the experiments,
he offered to financially support Bell’s work. After 2 years of laboring, in 1876, Mr. Watson heard Bell’s voice through the wire in another room in what is considered the first telephone call. At age 29, Bell was issued Patent No. 175,465, for “the method of, and apparatus for, transmitting vocal or other sounds telegraphically by causing electrical undulations, similar in form to the vibrations of the air accompanying the said vocal or other sound.” • The following year the Bell Telephone Company was created, and Alexander married the deaf daughter of his wealthy patron. Less than nine years later, 150,000 people in the U.S. owned telephones. • In 1915, Bell phoned Watson once again, this time for the first ceremonial transcontinental call. Bell called from New York City and Watson answered in San Francisco. • In addition to the telephone, Bell held 17 other patents, including hydrofoil boats, aerial vehicles, selenium cells, a metal jacket to assist in breathing, a device to locate icebergs, and the audiometer to detect minor hearing problems. He is also credited with the metal detector, an invention he came up with quickly in an attempt to locate a bullet in the body of President James Garfield, after the president was shot by an assassin. • In 1906, this genius with a vision said, “The day will come when the man at the telephone will be able to see the distant person to whom he is speaking.” • Although he was a gifted inventor, throughout his life, Bell always referred to himself as “a teacher of the deaf.” When he passed away in 1922, the entire telephone system was shut down for one minute as a tribute.

Q: My family farm is in Iowa, and I have scouted for arrowheads ever since I was a youngster. I have several hundred in my collection, and wonder if you can recommend a good, basic reference book to help me identify the specimens I have. -- Ken, Davenport, Iowa A: There are several excellent references, but one I think is exceptional is "Overstreet Indian Arrowheads: Identification and Price Guide" by Robert M. Overstreet and published by House of Collectibles. This guide is filled with life-size illustrations of arrowheads grouped by nine geographic areas in the United States: Northeast, Eastern Seaboard, Gulf Coastal, Southern Central, Desert Southwest, Great Basin Westward, Northern High Plains, Northern Central and Eastern Central. Iowa is in the Northern Central region. In this guide, there are tips on grading and even an experts' guide on how and where to purchase authentic relics.

A: I have several comic-book references, but the two I keep checking are "Comic Book Checklist & Price Guide" by Maggie Thompson, Brent Frankenhuff and Peter Bickford (Krause, $19.99); and "The Standard Guide to Golden Age Comic Books" by Alex G. Mallow and Stuart W. Wells III (Krause, $19.99). Both books are thoroughly illustrated and accurately reflect the marketplace. As with most collectibles, condition is extremely important. For example, the first issue of Archie comics, which was published in 1942, is valued at $25,000 in mint condition. In lesser condition, it would worth only a fraction of that amount. *** Q: Recently, I purchased a "Bubbleman" Pez dispenser. How old is it, and is it worth more than the $15 I paid for it? -- Steve, Broken Arrow, Oklahoma A: Your Bubbleman was issued during the fall of 1996 and was only available from Pez through a mail-in offer. Although they bear a copyright date of 1992, they weren't marketed until four years later. Accord-

*** DEAR DR. ROACH: I have arthritis in my neck. When I turn my head, I get a snapping sound in my head under the skull. What can be done for this, and is it dangerous to ignore and maybe just wear a collar? A doctor in Florida wanted to do surgery on my neck when I went for back surgery three years ago. I'm 76 years old. I have no pain or weakness, just a light ringing in my head. -- S.M.
EYEGLASSES CAUSE SKIN TO BLISTER DEAR DR. ROACH: I recently purchased two new pairs of prescription eyeglasses that are in plastic frames. Forty-eight hours after I began wearing the first pair, the bridge of my nose became very red, and small, flat blisters appeared. The same behind both ears -- anywhere the plastic touched my skin. I got this to heal with cortisone cream, and a week later I tried the other pair. This time, the reaction came within about 14 hours and involved swelling of my nose as well as the blistering and bright redness. What causes this -- an allergy or some sort of chemical burn? The area itched yet felt like a burn and peeled after the cortisone treatment brought the blistering down. -- N.W. ANSWER: This sounds like a case of contact dermatitis, probably related to the chemicals used in the manufacturing of the plastic. Some people are just sensitive to any of the many chemicals used; however, I am increasingly seeing bad reactions to manufactured goods, especially to those made overseas. Not every country has the same safeguards we have in place in North America. Some of these chemicals are volatile and disappear after a short while. It's possible that washing the glasses in hot, soapy water could have been able to remove them. However, in your case, the reaction was so strong that I would avoid that brand in the future.

ANSWER: The snapping sound is likely made by one of the tendons in your neck moving over a bony prominence. If it isn't causing any pain, I don't think you need to do anything about it. I certainly would not recommend neck surgery. I reserve consideration of neck surgery for people with severe neurologic symptoms, such as pain and weakness, and those whose function is limited.

ROACH: Does taking psyllium interfere with the body's absorption of prescription medications? If so, how long should one wait after taking psyllium before taking prescription medications? -- M.H.S. ANSWER: Psyllium, which is in Metamucil but also can be bought in bulk, is a soluble, non-absorbable fiber that carries water with it as it passes through the GI tract, relieving constipation. It is safe and effective for most people with mild constipation, but can cause some bloating sensation, especially if started at too-high doses. It should be taken with plenty of water. Psyllium can prevent absorption of medications. It should be taken one hour before or at least two hours after other medications. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. "CECIL B. DEMILLE: THE ART OF THE HOLLYWOOD EPIC" by Cecilia de Mille Presley and Mark A. Vieira, introduction by Martin Scorsese (Running Press, $60) Reviewed by Larry Cox One hundred years ago, Cecil B. DeMille made the first feature film ever shot in Hollywood. "The Squad Man," which was based on a 1905 stage play, featured Dustin Farnum and was about 75 minutes in length. Beulah Marie Dix, who wrote the play, also was responsible for the movie scenario. Although fairly primitive when viewed today, it nevertheless is a seminal work that redefined film-making in Hollywood and helped establish DeMille as a major director. More than any other filmmaker in history, Cecil B. DeMille mastered the art of the epic through his legendary motion pictures. Although he won only one Oscar (best picture for "The Greatest Show on Earth"), he captured a worldwide audience with his "cast of thousands" and powerful images, including the parting of the Red Sea in his blockbuster "The Ten Commandments."
In a fascinating new book co-written by his granddaughter, Cecilia de Mille Presley, the man and his work are fully documented, supplemented with concept paintings, rare stills, props, costume designs and even DeMille's thoughts on his various films. The book draws heavily from the filmmaker's archives. Cecilia de Mille Presley, a leading activist for the preservation of cinematic history and a producer of documentaries, shares many personal memories of her grandfather, including the Egyptian expedition she experienced with the director during on-location filming of "The Ten Commandments." This is an extraordinary book about an extraordinary man. The images throughout the book are, as might be expected, both impressive and informative. This is a fitting tribute that celebrates a legendary filmmaker and his craft. (c) 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.

Tasty KITCHEN DIVA By Angela Shelf Medearis and Gina Harlow
GREEN GOODNESS If you've embraced the idea of cooking seasonally, or if you've found a farmers market that makes you happy, then you know there are seasons that are somewhat barren. When eating seasonally, sometimes there's not a cornucopia of choices when it comes to fresh, locally sourced produce. The whole idea of cooking and eating seasonally is to adapt our menus accordingly. But as spring approaches, we know that soon there will be stalls and stalls of delicious food. While we're waiting for spring peas and new potatoes, we still can enjoy some cool-season delicacies. Greens of all kinds thrive best in cooler weather. Many also mature quickly. That's why in early spring you'll find them almost everywhere. From lettuce and spinach to collards and chard, these leafy foods are at their best when in-season and fresh-picked. They are tender and sweeter, and often hardly resemble the same vegetable you find in the grocery in the middle of summer. The greens family of cruciferous vegetables also includes broccoli, Brussels sprouts and cabbage. They're a great way to add antioxidants to your diet, and contain significant amounts of vitamins A and C, as well as potassium and fiber. If you're planning a vegetable garden, planting greens is an easy way to get it started. In the coldest regions, some varieties of greens can be planted after the threat of frost and will be ready by late spring. In more temperate regions, they can be planted in the fall. Once the plants are established, they can take a few days of freezing temperatures. You can even plant them in already established perennial beds. Some, like chard and kale, are quite lovely to look at. When cooking with greens, the sky's the limit. They can be sauteed, pureed, steamed and tossed in salads. With many varieties to choose from, now is the time to replace the spinach in your standard recipes with collards, turnip greens or kale. You also might want to liven up your salads by adding dandelion greens, endive or mache. Many greens can replace fresh basil to make a delicious and interesting pesto. For a twist on a traditional spaghetti dish, try my recipe for Collard Green Ribbons with Garlic, Lemon and Pasta. Cutting tender collard greens into ribbons and tossing them with olive oil, garlic, lemon and pasta transforms it into a delicious and hardy new dish.
COLLARD GREEN RIBBONS WITH GARLIC, LEMON AND PASTA • • • • • • • • • • • •
2/3 package or more of whole-wheat, thin spaghetti 16 ounces fresh collard greens (about 20 big leaves) 1/4 cup pine nuts 3 tablespoons olive oil 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes 5 small cloves garlic, minced 1 teaspoon lemon zest 1 1/2 teaspoons sea salt 1 teaspoon black pepper 1/2 teaspoon agave syrup or honey 3 ounces Parmesan cheese (vegan option: use GO Veggie!® Dairy Free Grated Parmesan Style Topping) 2 lemons, cut into wedges
and fragrant. Pour nuts out of skillet and save for later. 4. Return skillet to medium heat and pour in 2 tablespoons of olive oil. Sprinkle in a big pinch of red pepper flakes, garlic and lemon zest, and stir. Once oil is hot enough to shimmer, toss in all the collard greens. Sprinkle greens with salt, pepper and agave or honey. Saute greens for about three minutes, stirring often to keep from clumping. 5. Remove pan from heat. Scoop greens into pasta pot and toss with another drizzle of olive oil, adding pasta water if necessary. Divide onto plates, top with pine nuts and Parmesan topping or GO Veggie!® Dairy Free Grated Parmesan, and serve with two big lemon wedges per person. Serves 4.
2. Cut out center rib of each collard green. Stack a few greens at a time and roll them up into a cigar-like shape. Slice across the roll as thinly as possible (1/8 to 1/4 inch). Shake up the greens and give them a few chops so the strands aren't so long.

HOLLYWOOD -- As expected, ratings are down for the "NBC Nightly News" with Lester Holt. A CNN poll found 52 percent favored giving embattled anchor Brian Williams a second chance, 40 percent opposed it, and 8 percent were undecided. The big question is why NBC didn't find a way to do damage control instead of suspending Williams for six months. Industry insiders doubt he can return from such a long absence. Honestly, who among us hasn't stretched the truth to make ourselves look better? Was that lie, 13 years ago, so unforgivable that it can destroy a man's career? After all, Williams may not have been shot down, but he did bring us news many times from life-threatening war zones. If you like Brian Williams and want him to have a second chance, you need to write, text or email NBC News and tell them you want him back at the news desk, where he belongs. *** What everyone in Hollywood wants to know now is, "Do we really need to roast Justin Bieber?" Comedy Central has roasted Charlie Sheen, David Hasselhoff and Donald Trump, to name a few, but Bieber isn't old enough, famous enough and hasn't done enough to warrant a roast. Someone like Kanye West should be roasted and put out to pasture. He's even more annoying than Bieber. Comedy Central recently sent out a video showing Bieber being egged. Seriously, isn't there anything more entertaining to put on the network? The best thing we can do is to ignore this special, airing at the end of March, and not encourage the little Bieber, who says he wants to be roasted as a way of owning up to his mistakes. Why should we be a party to his therapy? What a waste of everyone's time!
Brenton Thwaites
*** "Pirates of the Caribbean 5: Dead Men Tell No Tales," not out until 2017, is filming in Queensland, Australia, at a cost of $250 million. Johnny Depp again stars as Captain Jack Sparrow, who is targeted by the villainous Captain Salazar (Javier Bardem) as Sparrow searches for Poseidon's Trident to fend off deadly ghost pirates. Geoffrey Rush returns as Barbossa. This film features handsome 25-year-old Queensland native Brenton Thwaites, who starred in Lifetime's 2012 sequel "Blue Lagoon: The Awakening" as well as 2014's "Maleficent" and "The Giver." He also stars in Helen Hunt's film "Ride," which she wrote, co-produced, directed and stars in, as well as the $150 million "Gods of England" with Gerard Butler and Geoffrey Rush, out next February. After the failure of "Mortdecai," which cost $60 million to make and earned only $27.2 million, as a leading man, Depp has more to worry about than ghosts. (c) 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.
Bree Williamson
Q: I was obsessed with the NBC nighttime drama "Deception." I really liked the actress who played Vivian Bowers. Can you tell me what she's been up to lately? -- Jaz G., via email A: Canadian actress Bree Williamson played the murdered heiress (in flashback scenes, as we backtracked trying to figure out who killed her) in the now-defunct drama. I, too, was obsessed with "Deception" back in 2013 and was sad it was canceled. Bree is perhaps best known for her nine-year run as Jessica Buchanan on "One Life to Live." Nowadays you can catch her in the Hallmark original movie "Portrait of Love," which premieres March 14 at 9/8c. She plays April Littleton, a world-renowned fashion photographer who returns to her small town to help raise money for its centennial celebration. There she finds there's a lot to love about her hometown, including the boy she left behind. I spoke with Bree about her latest role, and she told me why she chose this project: "I empathize with being at a crossroads in your life, where you're doing really well and you're feeling successful and everything's great, but you're not feeling completely fulfilled. April goes to her hometown, and she's swept away in the journey of finding love. She's a really cool character. I thought it was written very well, and it's a really sweet love story that my son can watch." *** Q: Could you please tell me where I can purchase the complete series of "The Bernie Mac Show," which aired on FOX from 2001 to 2006? All I can find is season one. -- Art H., via email
A: You can find only season one because only that first season is available. However, you can watch the entire series on Netflix, which has all five seasons available for streaming. *** Q: I just saw a commercial for "Fantastic Four," and I can't wait until it comes out this summer! Can you tell me anything about it? -- Andy T., Canton, Ohio A: Things are always hush-hush with these big-budget superhero action movies, and "Fantastic Four" is no exception. I spoke recently with Shauna Rappold, who is in the summer blockbuster due to hit theaters Aug. 7, and she told me a teeny-tiny bit of what we can expect: "I specifically worked with Kate Mara, who is Sue Storm, and then Reg Cathey and Tim Nelson. My character is in the military, but that's all I can really say, unfortunately, because it is so hush-hush. I've heard how it's going to come out, and it's going to be great. Josh Trank, the director, knew exactly what he was looking for, so it made it easy to deliver and give him just that." Write to Cindy at King Features Weekly Service, P.O. LOOKING FOR LOVE ONLINE? BEWARE If you're considering whether you should look for someone to date by going online, be sure you know the signs of a scam. The Better Business Bureau has some suggestions: * Find out if the dating site does background checks. Most of them don't. Anyone can sign up, and the dating site is happy to take their money. * The minute someone asks you for money, stop communicating immediately. It doesn't matter what the reason ... never give so much as one cent. Beware if the person claims to be overseas, in the military or recently widowed. Many states have sex offenders databases. Check. * Do a search online (use Google) to hunt for the person under the screen name and the "real" name. You can even put in snippets of text from your email communications to see if a pattern shows up. Put in the name and click "Images" to see if you spot familiar pictures. If you're sent a photo, it might be fake. * Beware suitors who are too quick to declare love or ask for marriage. Take a close look at the person's social-media page. Does it look real? Check the dating site's scam forums to see if you recognize any names or photos.

According to another study, even if we have limited mobility and are in our 80s, we still can benefit from a little physical activity. Slow walking and light housework count as physical activity and can have cardiovascular benefits. The idea is to reduce the time spend sitting and increase the time spent moving. For more information on moderate physical activity check the fact sheets at womenshealth.gov/publications. Search for physical activity. (c) 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.
Good News on Exercise This will be good news for some of us: We might not need as much exercise as we thought. Research from the UK seeks to aim senior women more toward moderate exercise. This smaller study was part of an ongoing long-term study of 1.1 million women going back to 1998. At that time they were asked about how many hours they spent at various activities, and their health has been followed since then. The results are promising for those of us who'd rather not run 5 miles a day or work out at the gym with weights. The women who reported moderate amounts of exercise ended up with significantly lower risks of cerebrovascular, venous thromboembolic or coronary heart disease events. In this case, "moderate" means doing something rather than nothing, enough activity to increase the heart rate or cause sweating two or three days a week. And we don't need equipment or lots of time, contrary to previous studies that said we need to do 30 minutes of exercise five days a week. In this study, more frequent exercise didn't mean lower risks -- there was little added benefit seen. One suggested doing some light gardening and then going for a walk.

GIRL SCOUTS March 12 is the birthday of the Girl Scouts, the 103rd anniversary of the day Juliette Gordon Low gathered 18 Savannah, Georgia, girls together for the organization’s first meeting. Let’s examine the history of this group and the fascinating woman who founded it. • Juliette “Daisy” Gordon was born into a wealthy Savannah family in 1860 and attended an exclusive boarding school and French finishing school. After her marriage to a very wealthy Englishman, William Low, the couple moved to England. • Daisy had experienced several ear infections prior to her marriage, leaving her nearly deaf in one ear. A fluke accident at her wedding robbed her of the hearing in her other ear. A grain of good-luck rice lodged in her ear and punctured the eardrum, bringing about an infection that completely destroyed her hearing in her good ear. • After several years abroad, Juliette’s marriage ended in divorce, and she returned to the States. Because she had lived such a financially-privileged life, she longed to do something meaningful with her life. In 1911, she met Sir Robert Baden-Powell, the founder of the Boy Scouts, after which she determined her course of action. • In 1912, Juliette invited 18 girls to the first meeting of the Girl Scouts, and they embarked on a mission of physical, mental, and spiritual development, along with community service. The girls played

sports, went on camping trips, studied the arts, practiced homemaking skills, learned first aid and survival skills, and sold war bonds. By 1920, there were 70,000 Girl Scouts across America. By the end of the 1920s, that number had grown to more than 200,000. Juliette personally funded the organization for many years, selling off valuable personal jewelry to provide support.
•The tradition of Girl Scout cookies dates back to 1917, just five years after Juliette Low founded the organization. A scout troop in Muskogee, Oklahoma, baked cookies and held a sale in their high school cafeteria as part of a service project. Over the next two decades, Girl Scouts across America held sales of cookies baked by their own troops, packaging them in wax paper, and selling door-to-door for 35 cents a dozen. In 1934, Philadelphia Girl Scouts became the first to sell commercially-baked cookies, and within two years, the national organization licensed the idea. During World War II, when there was a shortage of sugar, flour, and butter, the Girl Scouts sold calendars as their service project. By 1948, 29 commercial bakers were licensed to bake the three varieties – peanut butter sandwich, shortbread, and chocolate mints. Today, cookie sales during the short eight-week time period the Scouts hold their sale are close to $790 million.

Frequent sneezing or snorting, pawing at the nose, nasal discharge that's heavier or thicker than normal, behavioral changes (lethargy, lack of enthusiasm for everyday events like going outside) or lack of appetite. More serious symptoms include labored breathing, retching or gagging, weight loss, a deep cough or extreme lethargy.

how to do it: https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=3USfrjDcLhY) Clean the trap itself, and inspect the tailpipe that leads upward to the sink for clogs, as well as the pipe feeding into the wall. Fish out any clogs you can see.
To clear it, you'll need an adjustable/locking wrench or pipe wrench, a bucket, a plumbing snake (also known as a hand auger) and some rags. Place the bucket directly under the trap. If you have a cleanout plug, wrap a rag around it and use the adjustable wrench to loosen it, then unscrew by hand. Water will gush out into the bucket, so be prepared. Clean the P-trap using a small bottle-brush or a modified wire hanger to reach in and grab the clog, or feed the pipe snake in a couple inches at a time and whirl it around to catch and pull out clogs further in.
•Marble Cleaning •Pet Odor Removal •Chair Cleaning
Now slide the trap back into place and hand-tighten the nuts. Don't overtighten. To test the seal, run water down the drain and slowly tighten until any leakage stops. If it still leaks, replace the seals located at each nut. If you don't have a cleanout plug, the trap itself can be removed by loosening the attachment nuts on either end of the curved pipe by hand. If they're really tight, wrap a rag around each nut before using a pipe wrench or locking wrench, so you don't scratch or strip the nuts. Loosen and then unscrew by hand, easing the trap downward until it comes off. (This video by HowTo with GEO shows

until the seven-day window and you could pay $174 more. • Early booking: If you grab a seat the minute a flight is offered, you'll likely pay at least $50 more.
WHEN NOT TO BUY AN AIRLINE TICKET Nobody wants to pay too much for airline tickets, but how can you know when it's the best time to lock in your reservation? CheapAir.com surveyed 15,000 markets (that's 5 million trips) to come up with the answers. It isn't as easy as you might think. Your price is going to depend on your destination, the time of year, your travel days and more. Here are some of CheapAir's con-
clusions that determine your price: • When to buy: The price of an airline ticket can change a whopping 70 times while it's for sale. However, an average of 47 days in advance will get you the best price. • Waiting for last-minute deals: Not a good idea. Expect a sharp rise in price within 14 days of a flight, an average $111 more expensive. Wait
HOW SECURE IS YOUR NEW TABLET? Did you or anyone in your family get a tablet computer over the holidays? Was it an inexpensive one, perhaps purchased on Black Friday? If so, beware. You need to check your device for security vulnerabilities. A number of these tablets were sent out with problems that can cause you big headaches ... especially if you've given it to a child who intends to sign
• Best time to book: One to four months in advance is the sweet spot when you'll find your lowest price. Book more than 114 days before your flight and you'll average $32 more. Schedule within 27 days of the flight and you'll pay an average $47 more. • Holidays and summers: The rules are different here because the popular flights fill up quickly. For some destinations your best buy period can be up to 11 months ahead, when tickets first go on sale. Same for Thanksgiving, Christmas and spring break.

Of the 14, only two were deemed "secure," while the rest had varying levels and combinations of pre-installed vulnerability, security misconfigurations and

To see the names and models of the tablets, go to the Bluebox site and look for "Santa or the Grinch: Android Tablet Analysis for the 2014 Holiday Season." The bugs found were FakeID, Futex, Masterkey and Heartbleed. Among Bluebox's suggested steps to secure your mobile device for iOS: get the latest software and check for up-

Tablets aren't the only devices at risk right now. Days after the Bluebox report on tablets, another security company, Palo Alto Networks (www. paloaltonetworks.com), found a serious problem on 24 models of mobile phones, including a vulnerability that had been modified "to make it much more difficult for antivirus programs to detect the backdoor." Nervous yet? Take steps to safeguard your devices. Keep your software up to date, stay away from free Wi-Fi, turn off automatic steps, be careful what apps you download ... and keep an eye on children using these devices.
