TIDBITS® VACUUMS UP

DUST by Janet Spencer On June 8, 1869, Ives W. McGaffey patented a suction-type vacuum cleaner in Chicago, IL. Called the Whirlwind, it was difficult to use because the operator had to manually turn a crank while pushing it across the floor. Come along with Tidbits as we vacuum up the dust!

UNAVOIDABLE DUST • It’s been estimated that there are over 1,500 motes of dust in a typical cubic inch (2.5 cm) of air, even air that’s considered to be ‘clean.’ Human lungs take in about 14,000 quarts (13,250 l) of air daily, and contained in those 14,000 quarts of air are about a billion and a half particles of dust. One of the major components of house dust is microscopic flakes of human skin. You inhale about 700,000 of your own skin flakes daily. • What is dust? It’s salt from the sea, single-celled diatoms from the oceans, forest fire smoke, volcano ash, bacteria, viruses, fungus spores, mold, pollen, and insect parts. About half of the dust that floats around in the air is a result of human activities such as agriculture, industry, and transportation.

• One of the biggest happened in Haysville, Kansas on June 8, 1998, when seven workers at the DeBruce Grain elevator died when something triggered an explosion of grain dust so big that houses rattled in Wichita ten miles away. It was one of the largest grain elevators in the world. The grain burned for weeks.

(continued):

SNIGLET DEFINITION THE IMPORTANCE OF DUST • ‘Frust’ is the small line of debris that refuses to be swept onto the dust pan and keeps backing a person across the room until they finally decide to give up and sweep it under the rug.

DUST AND HUMANITY • As Hannah Holmes explains in "The Secret Life of Dust" humans can’t do without dust. Cement is a mixture of rock dust and pebbles. Rock dust is used in toothpaste, talcum powder, cosmetics, and medicine tablets such as aspirin. The pencil lead is compressed graphite dust; chalk is limestone dust; bread is wheat dust; mustard is the dust of mustard seeds; cocoa is the dust of cocoa beans. • Dust has a huge amount of surface area available: you wouldn’t drop whole coffee beans into hot water; instead you add coffee dust. You don’t put a whole bar of soap into the laundry; you add soap dust. Surface area increases the amount of interaction that can take place. Sometimes that can be detrimental.

GRAIN DUST • When grain is poured into a grain elevator, billions of grain dust particles fly into the air, rising into the enclosed elevator like a cloud. If the dust cloud is mixed with oxygen it becomes explosively flammable if a spark is provided. Sometimes a static electricity spark or the flipping of a light switch is all it takes to blow the roof off the grain elevator. • Between 1900 and 1955 there were around 1,000 grain dust explosions not only at grain elevators but also at malt houses and food processing plants across the U.S., killing a total of about 650 people. Similar dust explosions have happened in woodworking shops, coal dryers, fertilizer plants, cotton factories, and other industries that deal with pulverized matter. In 1998 alone there were 18 dust explosions in the U.S.

• Moisture in the atmosphere condenses as it cools. However, the water must condense upon something that it can cling to. Dust serves that purpose. In air that contains absolutely no dust, droplets would simply bounce off each other and would not condense until the atmosphere reached an incredible 300% humidity. Every single drop of rain and snow that falls contains a piece of dust, so precipitation really does “clean” the air.

PLANT STONES • If you’re a plant and you want to prevent caterpillars and other vegetarian insects from eating you, what do you do to protect yourself? Well, if you’re like most plants, you make sure there’s a hard gritty piece of stone inside each and every cell that might be eaten, making it an unpleasant meal for bugs. These microscopic stones are called phytoliths. Each of the cells in the plant’s leaves, fruit skins, or seed husks contain a tiny mineral rock, making it scratchy. This is what makes bran cereal so rough. When the plants die and deteriorate, their phytoliths are released into the air as dust.

IT'S A FACT • If there’s too much dust in the atmosphere, water droplets are divided between so many particles that none of the drops ever gets big enough to fall to the earth. A super dusty cloud can hold up to twice as much actual water as a normal cloud, but each droplet is half the normal size and no rain falls. • Huge fires such as those that sometimes burn in the tropics produce gigantic smoke plumes. Studies done by NASA showed that clouds that pass through this smoke will become super-saturated in dust and will subsequently drop far less rain than clouds that skirt the edges of the smoke. A similar study showed that when volcanoes exploded upwind of the island of Taiwan, the rainfall amounts on Taiwan dropped. This is why cloud seeding is such a tricky business. In cloud seeding, either solid particles of carbon dioxide dry ice or a fine mist of silver iodide are spread through clouds. Too much and the cloud dissipates. Just the right amount, and rain falls.

• The German word “dunst” meaning vapor gives us our word dust. • The word dirt comes the Old Norse “drit” meaning excrement. • “Manure” and “maneuver” have the same origin, the Old French word “manoeuvrer” meaning to till the soil or to work by hand. • “Bonfire” comes from “bonefire,” a fire built to cremate a dead body. • A grain of dust floating in a sunbeam is halfway in size between a sub-atomic particle and the size of the planet Earth. • When astronauts Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins, and Buzz Aldrin returned from the moon, they dutifully declared their lunar rocks and moon dust on customs forms.

NASA'S DUST COLLECTION • NASA actually keeps a Dust Library. There’s a collection of about 100,000 specks of space dust on file at the Johnson Space Center in Houston. Scientists collect space dust from places such as trapped in the Antarctic ice, in the mud at the bottom of the ocean, collected by weather balloons, or gathered by spacecraft in orbit. Space dust generally clings to a magnet whereas earth dust does not, making it easy to separate and identify.

• Dust storms in Arizona cause about 40 traffic accidents in a typical year. • Just when people in a Texas town met to decide the name of the city, a violent sandstorm whipped up dust in huge clouds. Taking this as a sign from God, the town was named Earth. • During medieval times, mummies found in Persia were ground into dust and sold as medicine.

Noteworthy Inventions

QUIZ: VACUUM INVENTORS • In 1907 Murray Spangler was trying to make a living as an inventor. To make ends meet, he worked nights as a janitor in a department store in Canton, Ohio. Spangler’s asthma acted up every time he cleaned the store’s rugs with a broom because he was allergic to the dust. He had seen suction sweepers but they were awkward and often ineffective. He knew there had to be a better way.

IT'S A FACT

• Using a tin soap box, an electric fan, a rotating brush, a pillow case, and a broom handle, he put together a contraption. He showed it to his cousin, Susan. She used it in her home and raved about it to her husband, who everyone called Boss.

• Melville and Anna Bissell owned a crockery and china shop in Grand Rapids, Michigan in the late 1800s. Melville had allergies and Anna did her best to keep their store dustfree. But there was a lot of sawdust in the shop and it clung to the carpets on the floor. In frustration, Anna asked Melville if he couldn’t come up with an invention to keep their carpets cleaner.

• Boss owned a leather goods manufacturing shop but he was so interested in the invention that he bought Spangler’s patent, hired him as a partner, and soon had six employees making suction sweepers in the corner of his shop. • Boss placed an ad in the "Saturday Evening Post" giving ten days free use of a Suction Sweeper to anyone who wrote with a request. Rather than simply mailing them a sweeper, he sent the customers to local stores that had agreed to become dealers. In short order he had a nationwide network of dealers as well as teams of salesmen who went door-to-door demonstrating the product, ensuring that the vacuum cleaners soon became a standard household item. • The vacuum company, named after Boss’s last name, is one of the top vacuum manufacturers in the world today. What company is it? See answer at the end

FACT • The average carpet will harbor anywhere between three tablespoons and three cups of dust and dirt per square yard.

• In the early days of vacuum cleaners, Hoover salesmen were required to make 15 sales calls each week. In 1922, there were 748 salesmen making a total of 549,780 sales calls that year. 31% of people pitched bought the product.

CLEANING UP

• In 1876, Melville Bissell patented the Bissell Carpet Sweeper. Although there were already carpet sweepers on the market, Bissell’s model was light and easy to use, it worked on uneven floors, and it picked up dirt without creating a cloud of dust. Bissell Carpet Sweepers proved to be so popular that by 1883 Melville and Anna had given up their crockery shop and gone into the carpet sweeper business full time. • When Melville died in 1889, Anna took over the business until her death in 1934 at the age of 87. Anna Bissell was one of America’s first female CEOs. The Bissell Company is still run by family members. Their carpet sweepers are most commonly found in places like restaurants where crumbs regularly need to be swept without disturbing diners.

IT'S A FACT • One kind of early day vacuum cleaner was powered by bellows that were connected to a rocking chair. The man would read the evening newspaper, smoking his pipe and rocking, while the wife did the vacuuming.

Photographer Seth Casteel says his life changed forever when a little dog jumped into a swimming pool. Casteel was born in Decatur, Illinois, and eventually developed skills to become a self-taught professional photographer. In 2007 -- mainly because of his love of animals -- he began taking pictures of rescue dogs in shelters to help in the adoptive process. His business as a photographer was only moderately successful until he made a major investment, spending thousands of dollars for a sophisticated camera that could capture images underwater. After photographing dogs swimming underwater, he posted several of his images on the Internet, and they immediately went viral. When his daily hits surpassed 100,000, he compiled his better pictures in a book, "Underwater Dogs." It became a bestseller and triggered a second book, "Underwater Puppies."

In his third book, Casteel uses his camera to capture "Underwater Babies." His new book is fascinating and filled with more than 60 images. The connection that dogs have with water and the incredible range of emotions they reveal during their adventures underwater are shared by their human counterparts. Casteel points out that the main mission of his latest project is to create a joyful, whimsical series of images of babies swimming to generate awareness about water safety for children. Each of his photos was shot during an actual swim lesson, with each baby learning water safety and survival skills. The resulting book is nothing short of astonishing. Ray Haselman, HOLLYWOOD -- Robert Pattinson fans were not thrilled with news of his engagement to 27-year-old British pop singer FKA twigs. She's been attacked on social media by his fans, but says she doesn't care. Pattison, busy making movies, also doesn't care what his "Twilight" fans think. In "Life," Pattinson plays Dennis Stock, who photographed James Dean (played by Dane DeHaan, who most recently appeared in "The Amazing Spider-man 2"). Sir Ben Kingsley plays Warner Bros. studio head Jack Warner and a host of unknown actors portray Pier Angeli, Elia Kazan, Eartha Kitt, Judy Garland, Natalie Wood, Julie Harris, Raymond Massey and Lee Strasberg. "Life" received mixed reviews in the U.S. and Berlin after being screened at The Berlin Film Festival. No release date yet. In September, "Queen of the Desert" will give Nicole Kidman a chance to redeem herself after the disastrous "Grace of Monaco," which couldn't get booked into theaters and went straight to Lifetime TV, to bad reviews. She plays British explorer Gertrude Bell to Pattinson's Lawrence of Arabia, with James Franco and Damian Lewis along for the ride. He's also got the historical mystery drama "The Childhood of a Leader" in the can and is currently shooting the Western thriller "Brimstone" with Guy Pearce and Mia Wasikowska, of "Alice in Wonderland" fame. *** Mark Wahlberg, who produced and did a cameo in "Entourage," hits screens June 26 in "Ted 2," with Seth MacFarlane, Liam Neeson, Morgan Freeman and Amanda Seyfried. "Mojave," screened in April at the Tribeca Film Festival, with Oscar Isaac and Garrett Hedlund, is awaiting release. Wahlberg is currently shooting two movies, the comedy "Daddy's Home" with Will Ferrell, and the disaster drama "Deep Water Horizon," with Kurt Russell,

Its midseason finale will air Aug. 29, with the second half picking up in 2016. I spoke with cast newcomer Byron Mann about this final season, and he told me a little bit of what fans can expect.

Byron is excited for viewers to see the Chinese influence and labor that went into making America's cross-country railroad system. "The railroad in America -- certainly the line from San Francisco out to the east -- was built primarily by the Chinese workers and the Irish workers. There were 15,000 Chinese workers building this line. Their stories have never been told -- on television or in movies. What I can tell you is that there will be a bitter and very complex rivalry between Chang and Cullen Bohannan, which will develop and escalate throughout the season."

"This season is about the Chinese workers on the railroad and all the stories that come out of it. My character is Chang, and he is the power broker. He controls all of the workers. He gets into all of these different conflicts and vying of power with Cullen Bohannan, who is played by Anson Mount, and with all the other railroad owners. A: Showrunner Ron Moore has revealed that the second season, which will premiere in 2016, will have a straight run of all season-two episodes. There will be at least 13 episodes, because the powers that be might decide it needs more time to cover the second book, "Dragonfly in Amber," which season two will be based on. ANSWER: Honey has been used since ancient times for wound healing, and modern science confirms it is an effective way of treating superficial burns and ulcers. It has been shown to have antibacterial properties, as well as antimicrobial properties, and is a potentially useful treatment for many burns and ulcers. I have found that few of my colleagues are aware of this.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am diabetic and had a sore on my big toe about a year ago that wouldn't heal, so my podiatrist sent me to a doctor at a hospital wound center. After three visits, the doctor started talking about removing a bone from my toe, and I refused to accept it. I came across a catalog that had alternative remedies for some health problems. One of the items was a wound honey, used to treat diabetic sores and bed-pressure sores. I ordered some and started using it, and within three weeks my sore had started to heal. I went back to my regular podiatrist and told him what I had used, and he was aware of that type of treatment. More can be found out about the healing properties of wound honey on the Internet. I felt compelled to share this with others who may be facing the same problem. It is a far better option than amputation. -- L.G.

I have two concerns to pass along with your story. First, honey may not be appropriate for all types of diabetic sores. Honey has been used for superficial and slightly deeper ulcers, which we call stage 2 and 3. The evidence for honey in a stage 4 ulcer is less clear. Also, one needs to be extraordinarily careful about the quality of medical information available on the Internet. I strongly recommend starting with Medline Plus (www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus), which references trusted sources for information. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am an 82-year-old male who exercises regularly for strength, cardiovascular fitness, agility and flexibility. I prefer stair-climbing workouts ranging from about 20 to 115 flights of stairs. I would like your opinion on this type of exercise. I have what appears to be some moderate knee arthritis and have heard that stair climbing can be harmful to the knees. I do not experience knee pain while climbing stairs. -- D.K.

ANSWER: Osteoarthritis used to be called "degenerative" or "wear and tear" arthritis, both of which suggest that you could be damaging your knees from exercise. However, this doesn't seem to be true. Exercise turns out to be one of the most important treatments of osteoarthritis, and one that shows a significant improvement in function and quality of life, far better than the medications many people take. Most people should start slow and build up, but you are exercising at quite an intense level. I offer you congratulations and don't recommend stopping. The arthritis booklet discusses osteoarthritis, rheumatoid rthritis, and lupus. Readers can order a copy by writing: Dr. Roach -- No. 301W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada. with the recipient's printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. A Smoking Gun?

Milk and Prostate Cancer: The Evidence Mounts Could milk cause prostate cancer? Here are the facts: Major studies suggesting a link between milk and prostate cancer have appeared in medical journals since the 1970s. Two of six cohort studies (research studies following groups of people over time) found increased risk with higher milk intakes. Five studies comparing cancer patients to healthy individuals found a similar association. One of these, conducted in northern Italy, found that frequent dairy consumption could increase risk by two and one-half times.1 In 1997, the World Cancer Research Fund and the American Institute for Cancer Research concluded that dairy products should be considered a possible contributor to prostate cancer. And yet another research study came out in April 2000 pointing to a link between dairy and prostate cancer: Harvard’s Physicians’ Health Study followed 20,885 men for 11 years, finding that having

Researchers are looking, not only at whether milk increases cancer risk, but how. The answer, apparently, is in the way milk affects a man’s hormones. Dairy products boost the amount of insulin-like growth factor (IGF-I) in the blood. In turn, IGF-I promotes cancer cell growth.3-5 A small amount is normally in the bloodstream, but several recent studies have linked increased IGF-I levels to prostate cancer and possibly to breast cancer as well. Milk does other mischief. Its load of calcium depletes the body’s vitamin D, which, in turn, may add to cancer risk. Most dairy products are also high in fat, which affects the activity of sex hormones that play a major role in cancer. And it would come as no surprise that milk might affect the growth of cancer cells. After all, its biological purpose is to support rapid growth in all parts of a calf’s body. After the age of weaning, calves (like all mammals) have no need for milk at all, and there is never a need to drink the milk of another species. Researchers are investigating whether dairy products might be culprits in other forms of the disease. Ovarian cancer, in particular, may be linked to galactose, a sugar produced from the milk sugar lactose. Yogurt, cheese, “lactose-free” milk, and other dairy products contain substantial amounts of galactose. Other parts of the diet affect cancer risk, too. Meat and fatty foods in general are implicated in increased risk, while tomatoes, watermelons, and other bright red fruits contain lycopene, which reduces cancer risk. The bottom line: While researchers will study the causes of cancer for years to come, health-conscious families may well want to trade dairy—and all animal products—for a healthy, vegan diet rich in vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and legumes. When to make the switch? Evidence suggests that the earlier in life healthy diet habits begin, the better your protection.

What!? Does Everything Cause Cancer? As a matter of fact, no. Whole grains, beans and other legumes, vegetables, and fruits are cancer fighters. Plant foods are low in fat, high in fiber, and loaded with protective cancer-fighting nutrients. But animal products—meat, dairy, eggs—are linked to several forms of the disease. They contain plenty of fat to harbor cancer-causing chemicals and to drive up the levels of cancer-promoting hormones in your body. They have no fiber that would normally sweep carcinogens from your

A cancer-prevention diet includes plenty of: Vegetables: sweet potatoes, carrots, broccoli, spinach, asparagus Fruits: strawberries, kiwi, melon, bananas, apples Whole grains: breads, cereal, oatmeal, pasta, rice Legumes: beans, peas, lentils The most healthful diets eliminate meat, dairy products, eggs, and fried foods. To make the transition easy, you may wish to use rice milk, soymilk, meat substitutes, or egg substitutes. The next chapter -- Get Set -- talks about using the activity log that's provided, while chapter 3 -- Go! -- has suggestions I've never thought of for making exercise fun. (Example: Working out with cans as you put groceries away. Who knew?) Do you know how to tell when to increase the number of repetitions of an exercise? Chapter 5 -- How Am I Doing? -- tells you. If nothing else, check the 20 Frequently Asked Questions near the end of the book.

Let's Get a Move On While many of us know the benefits of exercising and being more active, sometimes we just don't know where to start. The National Institute on Aging has a book for us -- Exercise & Physical Activity: Your Everyday Guide -- as part of the Go4Life campaign. It even has a website at go4life. nia.nih.gov.

The 124-page book can be downloaded from the website and printed out, or you can order it and have up to 10 copies sent to you for free. If you want even more exercise suggestions, especially if you're just starting, don't miss the 24-page Workout to Go publication, also available as download or to order. To order by phone, call 1-800-222-2225.

Social Security's My Account Both the book and website are very well done, but if you have Internet access, I suggest that option. Start with Get Ready on the left side of the screen. Endurance, strength, flexibility and balance are explained, with activity suggestions for each one. If you love websites with Quick Tips to break up the text or lots of places to click to get more information, this site is for you.

If you've lost or misplaced your Medicare card, you now can get a replacement online -- at the Social Security My Account site. My Account is a place where you can sign up to track earnings, change your address and much more, and Social Security encourages you to use this online feature.

BOOTH RENTALS! NAIL TECHS, HAIR STYLISTS WITH CLIENTS. FIRST MONTH FREE!

954-379-7645

At the bottom of the page where you can create a new My Account is a tiny note about blocking electronic access. If you wish to block access to your online Social Security account (for example, if you've been the victim of domestic violence or the victim of identity theft), you can do that online as well. If you later decide you want access, you can contact Social Security to unblock it. If you have a security freeze or fraud alert on your Experian credit report, you cannot create a My Account. Here's why: When you sign up for an account, it looks at items in your credit file and asks you questions about them as a means of identifying you. For example, it might ask the price range of your auto payment, or the last five digits of your credit card, or the amount of your mortgage payment -- all information that's on your credit report. If you want to receive a paper copy of your Social Security Statement without doing it online, you can print out the "Request for Social Security Statement" (Form SSA7004) and mail it in. You'll get your paper copy in four to six weeks. The general number to call for Social Security questions is 1-800-772-1213. To learn more about the Social Security My Account, go online to www.socialsecurity.gov/myaccount. (c) 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.

STRAWBERRY ARUGULA SALAD • • • • • •

1 1/2 cups fresh strawberries 1 1/2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar 3/4 cup pecan halves 2 tablespoons olive oil Salt and pepper to taste 4 cups loosely packed baby arugula leaves*

1. Let school-age kids wash, hull, dry and halve the strawberries. Place in a bowl and toss with 1/2 tablespoon of the balsamic vinegar. Set aside for 5 minutes.

FRESH STRAWBERRY ARUGULA SALAD I'm obsessed with fresh strawberries right now. Sweet to the taste and bright-red to the eye, this luscious berry can be tossed into just about anything to turn an ordinary meal into a celebration. Enjoy this prime strawberry season with me, and head out to a pick-your-own field or farmer's market. En route, challenge your family to think of all the ways you can use your bountiful baskets of juicy berries. As kids shout out their favorites, such as strawberries and waffles, peanut butter and strawberry jam sandwiches

2. Meanwhile, an adult should toast the pecans in a small, dry skillet over medium-low heat. Shake the pan to avoid overscorching until the nuts are fragrant and lightly browned. Cool completely.

and strawberry ice-cream cones, you'll discover how the versatile berries can be worked into any meal of the day. Back home, learn new ways to use your bounty -- like stirring up strawberry-rhubarb jam or strawberry salsa. I like to use strawberries as a garnish, I toss them, along with fresh mint, into a chilled pitcher of water, and I'm always incorporating them in supper salads using other fresh local produce, nuts and cheese. Here is a simple salad that's a headliner on our Father's Day lunch menu. Young kids can prep the berries and peppery arugula while you quickly toast the pecans in a pan on the stove.

gut. It's also a great source of potassium and is low in sodium, which helps with blood pressure and heart rates. Cucumbers are high in vitamin K, which helps with bone strength. It also has established a role in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease by limiting neuronal damage in the brain. When purchasing cucumbers, select ones that have a firm texture and a bright-green color. There shouldn't be any spots, cuts or breaks in the skin. A wrinkled, large or yellowish cucumber means it is over ripe, lacking nutrients and tough. Before using or storing, cucumbers should be washed using cool, clear water and dried thoroughly to get rid of any surface dirt and pesticide residue. They may require light scrub at spots where prickles or dirt is evident Cucumbers can be stored at room temperature for a day or two, but for best results, store them for up to a week in a plastic bag in your refrigerator's crisper drawer.

COOL CUCUMBERS Cucumbers are a go-to vegetable for salads, but there are many ways to incorporate this cool, crunchy vegetable into everything from appetizers to drinks. Cucumbers are one of the oldest cultivated crops and have more than 100 different varieties. It's believed they were first cultivated in India.

You can use cucumbers in a variety of ways. Fresh, cleaned cucumbers can be enjoyed as they are. You also can cut cucumbers into cubes with the skin and add them to vegetable or fruit salads. Finely chopped, fresh cucumber slices are delicious when mixed with yogurt, cumin, coriander, pepper and salt to make cucumber raita, the popular Indian condiment that adds a cooling effect to spicy dishes. English cucumbers are great eaten skin and all, but with some other varieties you may want to peel them first (especially ones with thick skins). If you're making a salad with seeded or slicer cucumbers, cut them lengthwise and use a spoon to scoop out the seeds.

Cucumbers are at their best when young and tender with a crunchy texture. They come in many sizes. Some of the most popular varieties are the Dosakayi, popular in India for curries and stews; crunchy "slicers," used in salads; and pickles like gherkins, dills and sweet French cornichons. The English cucumber is longer and narrower than the slicer varieties. Its seeds are much smaller and the skin is thinner. This type of cucumber may be labeled as "seedless" or "burpless." It usually comes wrapped in plastic and unwaxed. The taste of English cucumbers also is less bitter, and some find it almost sweet. Cucumbers have about 15 calories per 100 grams, and the peel is a good source of dietary fiber and is a mild diuretic, which helps to eliminate toxic materials in the

3. In a large bowl, whisk together the remaining vinegar, oil, salt and pepper. Add strawberries, arugula and pecans, and toss. Taste and season as needed. *Substitute half of the arugula with fresh spinach for a milder flavor. *** Donna Erickson's award-winning series "Donna's Day" is airing on public television nationwide. Pour cold water, soda, seltzer or sparkling water into the pitcher and stir until well-combined. 3. Pour into glasses with ice and garnish with thinly sliced strawberries, limes or cucumbers. SHIFT HAPPENS The next time you see David Ortiz or Ryan Howard lose what would have been a sure base hit had there not been a concentration of seven guys with gloves milling about in the spot the ball went, know that what you are seeing is nothing new. Credit a guy they called "Old Shufflefoot" for the defensive shift, one time called "the Boudreau shift" after the creator, or "the Ted Williams shift," the guy it was invented for. The story goes that Lou Boudreau, the player-manager of the Cleveland Indians, decided to employ the shift during the second game of a doubleheader with the Red Sox.

Williams, despite his reputation and self-assertion of being the greatest hitter of all time, was a one-trick pony at the plate in that he was a dead-pull hitter. The game previous he had pulled three homers to beat the Indians by a run, and Boudreau, who was considered one of the best hitters in the game, decided it might be a good ploy. Williams had an ego and nobody thought he would drop a bunt to the vacated field to his left.

Even though the infield shift was used a time or two in the old days, there are few anecdotes pointing to the fact that it was used to the degree it is today, which, anecdotally speaking, is a lot. A lot, lot. Like, every game, a lot. Ty Cobb called Williams "stupid" for not bunting against the shift like he would. Today, former hitting stars like Don Mattingly are urging players to learn how to hit to all fields. In a recent op-ed, Hall of Famer Mike Schmidt pointed out that for many players, it's too late to change. This is ironic because, in the AL at least, the designated hitter rule has finally done what it was marketed to do in the first place, namely extend the careers of aging stars. Alex Rodriguez and Ortiz fit that bill perfectly. But defenders of the shift argue that it's something that will work itself out. Personally, I don't want to see Mark Texeira or Ryan Howard bunt and run every game, and I don't want to explain to my kid why the third baseman is guarding the line -- at first base. This is silly. The game only had one flaw, and it was fixed when they instituted the infield fly rule. We say that runners have to remain in the base paths, fielders should field their positions. Enough of this shift. Mark Vasto is a veteran sportswriter who lives in Kansas City.

It's interesting that Boudreau's name should come up. He is a bit of a trivia answer. He was the last American League player-manager, and unlike Pete Rose, the last player-man-

If you're tired of vinyl, other flooring materials are perfectly fine. Ceramic tile, synthetic laminate (made to look like hardwood) and natural stone are popular choices for the kitchen. However, they typically cost more than vinyl sheets or tiles. To replace your old floor, cut long strips into the vinyl and then pull the strips up. Use a wallboard knife and a solution of water and liquid dish detergent to loosen the backing. Scrape remaining flooring up using a floor scraper and the detergent solution, clear away all the debris, and vacuum with a wet-dry shop vacuum (put a bit of water in the vacuum to keep the dust down). By Samantha Mazzotta

RECOVERING A VINYL FLOOR Q: The vinyl floor in my kitchen is pretty old -- there are bubbles under the surface, and the edges are peeling back from the walls. How expensive is this to replace? Can I install a different material? -- John T., Norcross, Ga. A: Vinyl flooring can be the most economical material you put into your home. It's durable, resilient and relatively easy for new do-it-yourselfers to install.

al

Inspect the exposed underlayment -- a sheet of plywood or cement board laid over the subfloor. This is the most important factor in a good-looking, durable vinyl floor. It provides a smooth surface for resilient flooring to adhere to. However, it can be damaged by water leaks and day-to-day use. Replace damaged underlayment, and fill small holes and seams with latex patching compound. Check for squeaks or sags, and inspect the subfloor, joists and foundation to make sure they aren't deteriorating. If you see damage of any kind, consult a contractor. Repairs to the subfloor and supports may cost more than you had budgeted, but the long-term benefits are more than worth it.

Once the underlayment is deemed healthy, place the new vinyl flooring. Make the job easier by creating a cutting template -laying sheets of paper along the edges of the walls and marking areas that need special cuts, such as around pipes. Tape the papers together to create a full-size outline of the room. Roll the vinyl out in an open area. Position the paper template over the vinyl, and trace the template perimeter (and markings) using a water-soluble pen. Make the necessary preliminary cuts. Once this prep is finished, roll up the vinyl sheet, carry it into the kitchen, and install according to the manufacturer's instructions. It'll be much easier than you think! HOME TIP: Vinyl flooring made before 1986 may contain asbestos, which can cause severe health problems if inhaled. If your vinyl floor could be 30 years old or more, play it safe by contacting an asbestos abatement contractor. Send your questions or home tips to ask@thisisahammer.com. dren don't know where to find those documents, and most don't know what's in them.

Study: Many Parents Don't Have a Will Almost half of all parents don't have a will. That's a stunning number of people who haven't put their final wishes in writing. A Princeton Survey Research Associates International's poll for Caring.com asked adult children across the country for their knowledge about their parents having a will. Here are some of the statistics: * Forty-four percent of parents don't have a will or living trust, period. * Sixteen percent of adult children don't know whether their parents have a will. * Of those who know there is a will, half of adult chil-

• On December 5, 1952, a temperature inversion moved over London. A layer of cold air was trapped by a layer of warm air which acted like a lid. Sulfurous coal soot was trapped in the air around the city. The moisture in the air condensed around the smoke particles, forming a thick fog. Visibility dropped to a few feet. The smog stung the eyes and caused skin irritation. Cattle began dropping dead of asphyxiation. People with respiratory illnesses or cardiovascular problems be-

If you consult an attorney about having a will written, ask about revocable living trusts laws in your state. It's possible (not guaranteed) that your inheritors can avoid the delays of probate.

* One-quarter of adult children don't know if the wills have ever been updated.

If you have a will, update it periodically to add or revoke provisions by having a codicil (an amendment) added to it.

* More females than males know what's in the wills, but men are more likely than women to know where the wills are.

Have all your important documents in one place: insurance policies; information about how to contact your attorney, CPA and financial adviser; and your will. And be sure your family knows where this information is stored.

* Older adults, who have older parents and therefore should be much more informed about the location and contents of wills, aren't much better off than young adults. In the 50-64 age category, 38 percent don't know what's in the will and 29 percent don't know where it is. No matter your age, if you're a parent, you need a will. Consider what happens if you suddenly pass away without having made written instructions about what's to happen to your house, your financial accounts and all your other assets. Not only are you leaving your loved ones in a bad position at an emotional time, it's also going to be expensive for them to sort out. Dying without a will is called intestate, and each state has different rules about how your property will be divided.

came seriously sick. Those suffering from bronchitis or pneumonia who might have recovered under normal conditions died instead. By the time the inversion lifted on December 9, about 4,000 people had died from breathing the highly acidic polluted fog.

FAST FACT

• As a result of the “Black Fog,” Parliament enacted the Clean Air Act in 1956, reducing the coal-burning allowed in the city.

• One study showed that kids who live on farms suffered from less asthma than kids who live in the city. A study of Berlin shortly after the Berlin Wall fell found that in wealthy West Germany, asthma was common, but in impoverished East Germany it was rare.

LOS ANGELES LANDSLIDE • In L.A. in 1994 earthquakes caused landslides in the area. The landslides created clouds of dust that engulfed entire towns. A few days later, people began showing up at hospitals complaining of fever, coughing, and fatigue. Over 200 people got sick. The Centers for Disease Control investigated. Mapping the location of the victims showed that they had all been in the path of the dust clouds. They had inhaled fungus spores in immense numbers, causing them to become ill.

Those rules won't necessarily coincide with your wishes.

* Only 40 percent of parents have updated their wills within the past five years.

AIR POLLUTION: SMOG • Long ago people in Britain used wood as fuel. When the supply of wood ran short, they began burning coal. Some coal burns fairly cleanly, but the cheapest coal does not. It smokes a lot and loads the air with sulfur. The word “smog” was invented in 1905 by a person describing the combination of fog and coal smoke over London. London smog led to one of the deadliest dust episodes in history.

www.TidbitsFlorida.com • June 19, 2015 • 13

• Some researchers theorize that people who experience chronic sinusitis are actually suffering from their body’s auto-immune response to fungus spores in the air.

ASTHMA

• It has long been known that asthma is far more common in wealthy developed nations than in poverty-stricken undeveloped nations. In the U.S., the number of people who suffer from asthma has grown by 50 percent per decade since 1970. Other nations such as New Zealand, Britain, Japan, Australia, and the Netherlands have also experienced asthma epidemics. In fact, military records in Finland show that the number

of young men with asthma has multiplied an incredible twenty times since 1960. • Why? Researchers theorize that constant exposure to dust and dirt challenges the immune system and keeps it strong. People who live in a fairly sterile environment have immune systems that get totally freaked out when hit by a load of dust they’re unfamiliar with. The immune system then goes overboard trying to fight the “invader” which it doesn’t recognize as being ordinary dust. • Nowadays kids spend most of their time indoors in front of the TV, the video game, or the computer screen in clean indoor environments where there is limited dust. In earlier days kids spent their time outdoors where they were exposed to a wide variety of dusts. Incredibly, some allergists have had success treating asthmatics with an injection of a solution of dusts reaped from vacuum cleaner bags.

6700 Miramar Parkway, Miramar FL 33023. Dreamcatchers for the Soul Foundation is presenting a oneday event full of workshops and classes designed to help children learn skills to de-stress, improve mental focus, effectively manage anger and live healthier lives. Back in the day, childhood used to be a relatively stress-free experience for most children. Once upon a time, this carefree era included hours of outdoor play with neighborhood buddies, limited amounts of television, an education that included a healthy dose of the arts; and home-cooked meals that allowed most children to live free of the weight and health issues plaguing many of today’s youth. As parents prepare to send their children back to school, a local organization wants to equip families with tools to alleviate the stress of being a child in the 21st Century. Unlike their parents and grandparents, today’s child is faced with a world that includes high stakes standardized testing and a national obsession with social media, high tech gadgets, fast-food and destructive reality shows. Dreamcatchers’ founder, Pamella Reid, said that she created the organization to help children and their parents to learn natural remedies for thriving during a time that negatively affects many children’s self-esteem, academic performance and their health. Adult participation in the multi-billion dollar holistic healthcare and prevention industry has exploded in recent years. Reid said that exposing children to yoga, Tai-Chi, meditation, healthy cooking classes, juicing classes and organic gardening helps them to improve their self-esteem, academic performance and overall well-being. Space for vendors interested in selling products for the mind, body and spirit will also be available. For more information, contact Pamella Reid at 954-55806232 or email her at Pam@dreamcatchersforthesoul.com. For more information about Dreamcatchers, please visit the website at www.dcfts.org
