TIDBITS® GOES OUT TO

GOLF by Janet Spencer In honor of the PGA golf tournament, Tidbits goes golfing!

GOLF THROUGH HISTORY • The game of golf may have originally started as a game played by the Romans called 'paganica.' It was played by hitting a feather-filled leather ball with a crooked stick. • Modern golf was invented by the Scots, and by the mid1400s had become so popular that King James II outlawed the game because he felt his subjects were wasting too much time playing it when they should be spending more time doing useful things. Archers were losing their shooting ability because they were spending so much time hitting little balls around instead practicing their aim. • Golf was once an Olympic sport. It was dropped in 1904. • The first golf tee was patented on December 12, 1889 by a dentist named G. F. Grant of Boston. • America’s first 18-hole golf course was constructed on a sheep farm in Downer’s Grove, Illinois in 1892. When businessman Blair McDonald moved to this town, he began constructing the course with his colleagues because he loved golf. The Downer’s Grove Golf Course is still intact after all these years, although it has since been downsized to just 9 holes.

• During the 1949 British Open, Harry Bradshaw accidentally drove a ball into a beer bottle which broke the bottle's neck. The ball ended up inside the bottle. To avoid a penalty, Bradshaw played it where it lay. He smashed the bottle with his club. The bottle traveled about 30 feet (9 m). The ball didn't move. Watermelon Kiwi

• During a 1938 PGA tournament, Jimmy Hine's chip shot on the 13th hole hit opponent Sam Snead's ball, and they both ended up in the cup. Both players, who were tied, were awarded a birdie two. Snead eventually beat Hines by one stroke.

• In 1975 Perry Crowley of Connecticut was playing golf when he hit a ball into the water. However, it skipped off the lake, ricocheted off a rake in the nearby sand trap, then landed on the green and skidded into the cup.

• Songwriter Hoagy Carmichael was playing at Pebble Beach, California. He teed up on a par-three hole, chose a club, and smacked the ball. It bounced once on the green, rolled to the pin, and dropped in the hole for a hole-in-one. Hoagy didn't react at all. He just reached in his pocket, pulled out another ball, teed up again, and said, "I think I've got the idea now."

• Sign posted on an African golf course: "If the ball comes to rest in dangerous proximity to a crocodile or a hippopotamus, another ball may be dropped."

during the WGC Cadillac Championship in 2009. Wearing nothing but a glove and his jockey shorts, he hit his ball out of the muck and made bogey.

• On a golf course in Africa, golfers tee off from the flat top of a 15-foot (4.5 m) termite mound. A hundred other mounds on the course provide the hazards.

• Jack Nicklaus won the Masters tournament six times.

(continued):

• Henry "Dads" Miller of Anaheim, California, once shot a 99 on a 5,734-yard course. He was 100 years old at the time, and had not taken up golf until the age of 67. • Fred Astaire was nearly as good at golfing as he was at dancing. In his 1938 film "Carefree," he danced over tables, down the hallway, out to the terrace, and onto a golf course. There he was to dance over to a golf club and hit, in rhythm and on cue, a dozen golf balls that were lined up on the fairway. When the crew went to retrieve the golf balls, they found all twelve balls within eight feet (2.4 m) of each other on the green. • "Golf Digest" reports that there are an average of about 120 holes-in-ones reported every day.

• You need to walk 35 miles (56 km) to reduce one pound (.45 kg) of fat. If you drink two average cocktails during an 18-hole round of golf, you will end up with a net caloric gain. • In the movie "Diamonds are Forever," James Bond smuggled diamonds inside his Dunlop 65 golf balls. • Golfer Gene Sarazen was playing in an early world championship match in 1922 against Walter Hagen. At the end of the first day, he was just 2 strokes behind, on account of having missed a couple easy putts due to nerves. That night he complained of stomach pains and was unable to sleep. The next day he went on to win the match. Four hours later he underwent an emergency appendectomy. He commented, "A sick appendix is not as difficult to deal with as a five-foot putt."

FAST FACTS ABOUT GOLF

• Someone asked Muhammed Ali how he was at golf. "I am the greatest!" he replied. "I just haven't played yet!"

GOLF FACTS • The word "caddy" comes from the French word for student, "cadet" which is pronounced cad-DAY. • The medieval Dutch word "kolf" or "kolve" meant "club" and is probably the origin of the word golf. • Balls travel significantly further on hot days. • A club remains in contact with the ball for half of a thousandth of a second and travels with the ball for three quarters of an inch. • 400 million rounds of golf are played in America each year.

FAMOUS PLAYERS • Stephen Horchler of Scotland invented a golf ball that has a built-in radio transmitter that beeps distress signals so golfers can find it. • Astronaut Alan Shepard made golf history when he knocked a few golf balls around on the moon. But he missed the first shot, taking a mulligan. This earned him a lifetime membership in the U.S. Duffers Association of Newport, Kentucky. They also awarded him the presidency of their first moon chapter. • Crows living near the golf course in Bombay, India, have developed a taste for golf balls, picking them up and carrying them back to their nests. Caddies run after the balls and cover them with a red cloth before the crows can spot them.

GARNET CARTER • When Laura Baugh started tearing up the golf courses in the early 1970s, she was still too young to play on the women's pro tour according to regulations. So her agent took her to Japan, which did not have a minimum age requirement. The golf-happy Japanese fixated on the curvaceous young blond American. Laura Baugh photos, calendars, photo albums, cosmetics, school supplies, English-language cassettes, sports clothing, and gold accessories became all the rage in Japan. She became the highest paid female golfer even though she had never played in an American tournament. • Tiger Woods was only 8 when he got his first hole-in-one. Five-year-old Coby Orr was the youngest golfer to shoot a hole-in-one. He did it in Littleton, Colorado in 1975. • Henrik Stenson made headlines by stripping down to his underwear when his ball went into a swampy area

• John 'Garnet' Carter was born in 1883 in Sweetwater, Tennessee. Although he dropped out of school, he later completed a six-month business school which filled his head with ideas. • In his early years, he bounced around between jobs, working at a grocery store, becoming a travelling candy salesman, and going into business with his brother selling aluminum ware. • Next he went into business developing real estate on Lookout Mountain near Chattanooga, Tennessee. There he constructed an inn with a ballroom. • In 1927, Garnet Carter was looking for an added attraction to entertain his customers. He came up with a successful idea, the mini-golf. His invention provided simple, fun outdoor recreation. It could be installed in a week and cost (at that time) as little as $2,000.

NOTEWORTHY INVENTORS:

ALAN SHUGART You may not recognize the name of Alan Shugart, but you most likely reap the benefits of his invention every single day. Let’s take a look at the inventor of the floppy disk, something that revolutionized the storage of computer data.

Seagate Technology in 1979, with the goal of producing hard disk drives for the rapidly-growing personal computer market.

•With a brand-new degree in engineering physics from the University of Redlands, Alan Shugart started work at IBM in San Jose, California, the day after he graduated in 1951 at age 21. His first position was a field service engineer repairing punch card accounting machines.

•Shugart expanded his horizons in 1987 by opening Fandango, a popular five-star restaurant on California’s Monterey Peninsula. His partner was a French-born chef whose family had operated a restaurant in Provence, France, since 1737. Shugart wrote a book about the process in Fandango: The Story of Two Guys Who Wanted to Own a Restaurant, published in 1993.

•Shugart rose quickly through the ranks at IBM and was transferred to their research laboratory. In 1955, he and his team were responsible for developing the first disk drive, named the IBM RAMAC, able to store five million characters of data. It was released commercially in 1959. •In 1969, Shugart developed the floppy disk, an 8-inch flexible plastic disk coated with magnetic iron oxide. The first “memory disk,” as it was called, held 100 KBs of data and provided a method of transferring data from computer to computer. •Shugart left IBM for Memorex in 1969, taking several IBM engineers along with him. He stayed with that company until 1972, when he launched his own business, Shugart Associates, that would perfect a lower-cost, mass-produced floppy disk, Two years later, after a dispute with the company’s board, he resigned. •In 1976, Shugart developed the smaller 5.25” disk drive and diskette, able to store up to 1.2 MB of data. He and a partner, a former co-worker from Memorex, started up

•Seagate Technology grew to be the world’s largest producer of disk drives.

•As a clever way of protesting against the country’s major political parties, in 1996, Shugart entered the name of his Bernese Mountain on the ballot as a candidate for Congress. He also founded a political action committee aimed at getting citizens more involved in the political process. Shugart recorded his experiences about the dog’s unsuccessful Congressional campaign in the book Ernest Goes to Washington (Well, Not Exactly). •In 1998, when Shugart was 68 years old, the board of directors of Seagate Technology forced their founder to resign, claiming he was becoming “slow.” •Four years after leaving Seagate, Shugart published his autobiography, Al: The Wit and Wisdom of Alan Shugart. He died in 2006 at the age of 76. •“It is important to remember when starting and growing a new company that cash is more important than your mother.” – Alan Shugart

In 1928, British actor Charles Bennett's play "Blackmail," starring Tallulah Bankhead, opened in London to critical acclaim. The following year, Bennett collaborated with Alfred Hitchcock in the film version of his play. The movie is credited as being the first British sound film ever produced, and the first film project that involved both Hitchcock and Bennett. They eventually would make six British motion pictures together, including four major classics: "The Man Who Knew Too Much" (1934), "The 39 Steps" (1935), "Secret Agent" (1936) and Sabotage" (1936). Bennett's British film work brought him to the attention of Hollywood. His first American project was "The Adventures of Marco Polo" released in 1938, and about three dozen additional film projects followed. Bennett had a colorful career that spanned the history of cinema from the Silent Era to the 1990s. He was an extraordinary man who excelled as an actor, director,

playwright, film and television writer, and as a novelist. During the 1980s, Bennett began compiling what eventually would become his autobiography. Although he died before it was completed, his son, John Charles Bennett, edited it for publication. The result is a fascinating behind-the-screens look at the man who helped develop Hitchcock's signature style, and in a very real sense, advance modern cinema. When Bennett and Hitchcock began their collaboration, they agreed from the start that the fundamental thing was to get the story line first, to know the ending before the beginning and then construct the story in a suspenseful, meaningful way. Their method obviously worked, since they produced some of the most memorable stories ever filmed. With an introduction by Bennett's son, this is an intimate narrative by a most remarkable figure, a man who helped define 20th-century entertainment. Bennett died in Los Angeles in 1995. He was 95 years old. (c) 2014 King Features Synd., Inc.

HOLLYWOOD -- Chris Pratt is currently filming "The Magnificent Seven," with Denzel Washington, Ethan Hawke, Matt Bomer and Peter Sarsgaard, for a January 2017 release. He'll next shoot "Passengers," with Jennifer Lawrence, a sci-fi film about a ship loaded with passengers en route to colonize a new world. Pratt reportedly will make $12 million, while Lawrence reportedly will make $20 million and a percentage. "Passengers" will be released sometime in 2016. Meanwhile, Pratt's "Jurassic World" has now become the third top-grossing film of all time, passing "Avengers: Age of Ultron" and "Furious 7." At this rate, "Jurassic World" might catch No. 2 "Titanic."

Lucie Arnaz *** The recent annual Lucille Ball Comedy Festival, held in her hometown of Jamestown, New York, had Jerry Seinfeld starring in two sold-out shows. In addition, Melissa Rivers and Kelly Carlin, daughters of Joan Rivers and George Carlin, the COZI TV Comedy Search Contest and "Parks and Recreation" alum Nick Offerman were all part of the festivities. COZI TV, which regularly airs "The Lucy Show," with Lucille Ball and her children Lucie Arnaz and Desi Arnaz, Jr., sponsored the yearly festival. Lucie Arnaz, 64, married current husband, writer-actor Laurence Luckinbill, in 1980 and got it right the second time around. They have three children -- Simon, Joseph and Katherine -- and live in Palm Springs, California. Lucie confesses, "I used to think Palm Springs was for old people, and there's not a lot to do. But we came down here and almost immediately met nine people who introduced us to 10 people, and they multiplied like rabbits, and suddenly there were 72 people a month we wanted to meet and do something with."

Her parents were among the first residents at the Thunderbird Country Club, where President Gerald Ford used to live. Desi Sr. built The Indian Wells Hotel in 1957, and after he and Lucy divorced, lived in a home in Indian Wells. Desi Jr. was married to actress Linda Pearl from 1980-81. He married Amy Laura Bargiel in 1987, and they moved to Boulder City, Nevada, and had a daughter, Haley. His wife died in January of cancer at the age of 63. Desi currently owns and operates the Boulder Theater, a cinema converted into a stage for the Boulder City Ballet Company and rock acts such as Leon Russell and Graham Nash. Lucie struggled for years to come out of her mother's shadow, and her recent tour in the show "Pippin" accomplished that. "When I came out of the stage door, people didn't say 'God I loved your mother,' they said they loved me in "Pippin." And that's the latest on Desi-Lu(cie)!

in 2065 Washington, D.C., the series will follow Dash (played by Stark Sands), a "precog" who has the ability to predict crimes before they happen. He uses his ability to assist detective Lara Vega (Meagan) in solving crimes before they take place. Melissa Benoist Q: I saw previews for the new “Supergirl” series, and the lead actress looks so familiar to me. Who is she, and what can you tell me about her? — Katie K., Naples, Fla. A: Melissa Benoist is the star of “Supergirl,” and she is best known, so far, for her work on “Glee,” where she played sweet ingénue Marley from 2012-14. The multitalented 27-year-old was dating her “Glee” co-star, Blake Jenner (who played Ryder), until March of this year — which is when the couple secretly tied the knot and then jetted off to Europe for an even-more-secret honeymoon. The news of the nuptials came to light mid-July, when Melissa was spotted at Comic-Con in San Diego, where she was promoting “Supergirl,” with a wedding band on her finger. “Supergirl,” which premieres Oct. 26 on CBS, centers on Melissa’s character, Kara Zor-El, cousin of Superman, who was taken in by the Danvers family when she was 12 after being sent away from Krypton, and must learn to embrace her powers after previously hiding them. The series also features Calista Flockhart, Dean Cain (of “Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman”), Helen Slater (who played Supergirl in the 1984 film), Peter Facinelli, Mehcad Brooks and David Harewood. Q: I was hooked on "Deception" a few years ago, and I was so bummed when it was canceled. Can you tell me what the series star, Meagan Good, has been up to lately? -- Lilly T., Detroit A: You can catch Meagan in her new series, "Minority Report," which debuts Sept. 21 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on Fox. If the show's title sounds familiar, that's because it's based on the 2002 feature film of the same name. Set

I spoke with Meagan about her new series, and she's thrilled to get this chance of a lifetime to play such a badass character in this iconic series. "For me, it's a dream character. She's everything that I want to be doing. We're all fans of the movie, and we're like, 'Oh my God, this show is getting produced by Steven Spielberg.' Just knowing that Steven Spielberg had to sign off on you and that he thinks you are a good actress is a huge thing." She's excited for viewers to see how these characters grow and develop: "I want people to grow with them, for people to really fall in love with them. We want the show to do well -- we want to live with these characters for as long as we can because we are all so happy with who we get to play." *** Q: I haven't seen Michael Chiklis in a while. What's he got coming up? -- Bradley T., via email A: The versatile actor, who is no stranger to superhero films and series, is set to co-star in season two of Fox's "Gotham," which kicks off Sept. 21 at 8/7c. He plays Capt. Nathaniel Barnes, who producers of "Gotham" have teased, "lands on the GCPD like a tornado, ripping out the dead wood of Gotham's police force." *** Write to Cindy at King Features Weekly Service, P.O. any known cause (usually smoking, even secondhand smoke). Medicines to reduce inflammation (especially inhaled steroids) often are used, as are medicines to relax the muscles inside airways to relieve obstruction. In severe cases, oxygen is necessary. Lung surgery or transplantation is rarely used. The booklet on COPD explains both emphysema and chronic bronchitis in detail. WHAT IS COPD? DEAR DR. ROACH: Please help me to understand what COPD means. -- S. ANSWER: "COPD" stands for "chronic obstructive pulmonary disease." "Chronic" means that it is long-lasting, and "obstructive" means the airflow in and out of the lungs is decreased. The three subtypes of COPD are chronic bronchitis, emphysema and chronic obstructive asthma. These conditions usually are progressive. COPD is the third leading cause of death in the U.S. Chronic bronchitis is a chronic productive cough (specifically, lasting three months or more in two successive years). Smoking is far and away the leading cause of chronic bronchitis in the developed world, but home cooking fires are the cause in developing nations. "Emphysema" means the destruction of the walls of the airways, causing abnormal, permanently enlarged air spaces. Smoking is again the leading cause of emphysema, but a genetic condition, alpha 1 antitrypsin deficiency, can bring about both emphysema and liver disease. People with this uncommon disorder sometimes mistakenly are assumed to be smokers. Asthma is a common condition that is highly variable from person to person. Most people have reversible obstruction to the airway with exacerbations of asthma, but some people have a degree of obstruction all the time, and they are considered to have COPD. COPD typically causes cough and shortness of breath, especially with activity. COPD often has exacerbations, which may be associated with infections, that cause worsening of symptoms, frequently requiring treatment, including hospitalization. Treatment for COPD is to remove

Vegetarian Diets Aid Weight Management A vegetarian dietary pattern may be the most effective for weight loss, according to a meta-analysis published in the Journal of General Internal Medicine. Researchers at Harvard, in conjunction with researchers in Taiwan, reviewed 12 randomized controlled trials, with and without calorie restrictions, encompassing 1,151 participants assigned to various vegetarian and nonvegetarian weight-loss diets. Over an average of 18 weeks, vegetarian participants lost 4.4 pounds more on average than those following nonvegetarian diets. Those assigned vegan diets lost 5.5 pounds more on average, the most weight loss of any dietary group. Increased intakes of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains provide more fiber, phytochemicals, and minerals that may contribute to weight loss. Another recent meta-analysis conducted by researchers at the Physicians Committee found that people who adopted vegetarian and vegan diets without calorie restrictions lost an average of 7.5 to 10 pounds. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I have Parkinson's disease. Although my medication is still working, it's not as effective as it was. I have heard that this is the time to consider stemcell treatment. Can you tell me if this is a good idea? -- S.A. ANSWER: Parkinson's disease is caused by the loss of neurons (nerve calls) in a portion of the brain called the substantia nigra. Stem cells are early, unspecialized cells, capable of differentiating into any kind of cell. The theory with stem-cell treatment is that the stem cells will go into the affected part of the brain and take on the role of the damaged or destroyed cells. Some early work has been promising. In my view, the technology is not yet ready for widespread clinical use. I don't recommend it. There are many new medications for Parkinson's disease, and I have recommended non-pharmacologic therapy, including exercise, several times. I strongly recommend evaluation by an expert, preferably a neurologist experienced in Parkinson's disease. A reader recently wrote to tell me that treatment of his vitamin D deficiency greatly relieved his Parkinson's symptoms. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. JAMA. Researchers compared mortality rates for 689,300 participants as part of the Emerging Risk Factors Collaboration with 499,808 participants from the UK Biobank. Those with a history of diabetes, stroke, and heart disease experienced up to four times the mortality rate compared to those with one or two of these conditions. Results showed that participants aged 60 or older with two and three of these conditions had reductions in life expectancy of 12 and 15 years, respectively. The numbers of years lost due to these conditions increased in younger populations. Emerging Risk Factors Collaboration, Di Angelantonio E, Kaptoge S, et al. Meat-Free Diets Best for Weight Loss A vegetarian or vegan diet is best for weight loss, according to a study published in Eating Behaviors. Researchers assigned participants to one of five diets, vegan, vegetarian, pesco-vegetarian, semi-vegetarian, or omnivorous, for six months as part of the New DIETs study. Those assigned to the completely meat-free diets, vegan and vegetarian groups, lost more weight, compared with those following the pesco-vegetarian, semi-vegetarian, and omnivorous diets. Vegetarians and vegans also had high acceptance rates for their assigned diets. This study suggests that offering a meat-free diet to overweight individuals may be the most effective way to promote weight loss. THE FRUITS OF SUMMER This summer has produced a bountiful crop of fruits. While I often take advantage of the fruits on sale, sometimes I have questions about how to prepare and store them. The following tips can help you prepare and enjoy fresh fruits and keep them at their most flavorful.

WHICH FRUITS CONTINUE TO RIPEN AFTER THEY'RE PICKED? Apricots, bananas, cantaloupe, kiwi, mangoes, nectarines, peaches, pears, plantains and plums continue to ripen at room temperature after they're picked. To speed their ripening, put them in a loosely closed brown paper bag. Plastic bags don't work for ripening. Once fully ripened, fruits may be stored in the refrigerator to lengthen their storage time. Though the outside skin of a refrigerated banana will turn dark brown, the inside will remain light-colored. Fruits that should be picked or bought ripe and ready-to-eat include: apples, cherries, grapefruit, grapes, oranges, pineapple, strawberries, tangerines and watermelon.

SHOULD FRUITS AND VEGETABLES BE WASHED BEFORE THEY'RE PUT AWAY?

WHAT IS THE EASIEST WAY TO PEEL AND SLICE A MANGO?

The Food and Drug Administration advises that we wash our fresh fruits and vegetables when ready to eat rather than when they're first purchased or picked. Here are some tips for washing fruits and vegetables before use:

Wash the mango. Cut the mango by sitting it on its bottom and cutting vertically along the flat side of the center seed by slicing off each fleshy cheek of the mango. Hold one mango half peel-side down and score the fruit down to the peel (but not through it) in a tic-tactoe fashion.

Don't use soap, detergents, or bleach solutions. Make sure your kitchen sink is clean, or place a large mixing bowl in the sink. Add the produce to the sink and cover with cold water. (Don't overcrowd the sink.) Add 1-2 cups of plain white vinegar and soak for 10-15 minutes. If some of the fruits bob to the top just swirl them around in the water and rub gently with your fingertips for a few moments. I rinse well using cold water to remove any traces of vinegar. Scrub firm produce, such as melons and cucumbers, with a clean produce brush to remove surface dirt. Try to cut away damaged or bruised areas -- bacteria can thrive in these places. To prevent this, thoroughly rinse fruits that require peeling or cutting -- such as cantaloupe and other melons -- under running water before eating. After purchase, put produce that needs refrigeration away promptly. Fresh produce should be refrigerated within two hours of peeling or cutting. Leftover cut produce should be discarded if left at room temperature for more than two hours.

Hold the scored portion with both hands and bend the peel backward so that the diamond-cut cubes are exposed. Cut cubes off peel, then remove any remaining fruit clinging to the seed.

HOW CAN I KEEP CUT FRUIT FROM TURNING BROWN? Coat them with an acidic juice such as lemon, orange or pineapple juice. Cut fruits as close to serving time as possible. Cover and refrigerate cut fruit until ready to serve. Avoid leaving cut fruit at room temperature for more than two hours. My recipe for Sweet and Spicy Fruit Salad uses a variety of your favorite fruits in a delicious new way.

SWEET AND SPICY FRUIT SALAD •

1/3 cup stevia, agave syrup or sugar

1 serrano chile, halved

1 whole dried star anise

7 to 8 cups mixed cut fruit, like kiwi, peaches, plums, raspberries, blueberries, blackberries, mango, pineapple, oranges, grapefruit, pears or bananas

2 teaspoons chopped tarragon

2 teaspoons chopped basil

1/2 teaspoon sea salt

1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper

1. Place sweetener, 3/4 cup water, chile and star anise in a small pot and bring to boil. Simmer for 10 to 15 minutes until mixture is as thick as maple syrup and spicy tasting. Strain syrup. (Syrup can be made up to 1 week in advance; store in the refrigerator.) 2. Toss fruit with half of sugar syrup, the tarragon and the basil. Add more syrup to taste, depending on how sweet and spicy you want the salad. Season very lightly with salt and pepper.

WIGS • In ancient Rome, vain women had marble statues made of their heads. Many wealthy women also equipped their statues with removable marble wigs, so they could be changed to match the hairstyles. •Queen Elizabeth I of England suffered from smallpox at the age of 29. She survived the illness, but her hair did not and she was bald from then on. To hide the condition, she began to wear ornate and elaborate wigs. As a result, wigs became all the rage across England and Europe, a fashion that lasted for centuries. •King Louis XIV employed 40 wigmakers and needed an entire corridor to hold all his wigs. His personal barber was the only human being ever allowed to see him bald. • Many people powdered their wigs with flour to absorb grease and dirt and make them look cleaner. This led to a shortage of flour in Marie Antoinette's day, adding to the social unrest and riots that led to the French Revo-

Huge sums were raised before wig-wearing went out of style. •In 1765, men in London began to give up their wigs in favor of natural hair. This worried wigmakers, who staged a demonstration by marching through the streets to the palace. They presented a petition to King George, asking him to force all adult males to wear wigs by royal edict. An opposing group staged a counter-demonstration in which they pretended to represent the wooden leg-makers. They petitioned the king to have a leg removed in order to promote their trade. The King got the point and denied both petitions. •In 1766 an observer wrote, "'Tis almost impossible to make the ladies understand that heads bigger than one's body are ugly." •During a skirmish with the Osage Indians, a commander was stunned and slightly wounded by a blow. He fell from his horse, and an Indian came over. The Indian was

fascinated by the commander's stunning head of white hair, and he grabbed a handful in preparation for scalping the man. The commander leapt to his feet and ran off, leaving the surprised Indian holding a handful of hair. He'd never seen a wig before and was convinced it was a magical scalp because it had fallen off in his hand. The wig became his prized possession and he was henceforward known as Paw-Hu-Scah, meaning "white hair." When he became chief, the town that grew up around his settlement was named Pawhuska, Oklahoma. •A wigmaker in Sydney, Australia branched into a new area: providing false hairpieces for the chest of men who are "bald" on their chest. He reportedly made a model that would even stay on in the water. • In Rome, there were few natural blondes, so the government declared that blonde hair would henceforth be known as a badge of sin. Wicked ladies were licensed, taxed, and required to dye their hair blonde or wear yellow wigs. Today, we still feel that blonds "have more fun."

trades are welcome fodder for call-in radio shows, but if there's ever a waste of airwaves, it's those pre-season callers who offer Didi Gregorius for Mike Trout in a straightup deal, and anytime somebody uses them to disparage another person for the crime of being from someplace else they know little or nothing about. By now, most sports fans are aware that Colin Cowherd was fired by ESPN after making disparaging remarks about Dominicans, not one day, but two days in a row. This wasn't a situation where "political correctness" claimed another victim. This was ignorance on full display.

MARTINEZ MAKES HIS POINT There was an old journalist I used to run into at the Greenwich Village Bistro who looked every bit like an old journalist hanging around a Greenwich Village restaurant sounds like he would look, complete with crumpled felt fedora and wide tie. One day, I was reading one of the tabloids, and I threw it aside with disgust. There was no real news on page one, and it had a bunch of hypothetical trades on the back. It was more about what somebody said he would do and a bunch of people reacting with disdain for the thing that hadn't happened. "Hey," I said, pointing to the newspaper, "This is a very bad newspaper." "No, it's not," he replied. "That newspaper is great. You're missing the point." I realized that he had just performed some sort of low-level Jedi mind trick on me, but I didn't care. Now I was free to like that newspaper again. Toward the end of July, with the trade deadline approaching, of course you're going to hear about potential trades. This is one of the few times where hypothetical

The baseball gods conspired to induct Pedro Martinez into the Hall of Fame the same week that Cowherd was fired. In a world where "public speaking" is considered one of the greatest fears a person can face, Pedro Martinez manages to speak about baseball in a second language. Can you imagine being on TV, in front of millions, in another nation, using their language to provide in-depth analysis? Martinez is a guy who grew up in a tin-shack and worked as a mechanic at an age most American kids are in middle school. He couldn't afford a baseball, so he played with oranges. He grew up to be one of the greatest right-handed pitchers of all-time. Yes, really, all-time. His numbers are incredible to behold. But perhaps the greatest thing he ever did was done off the mound, on the dais at Cooperstown. There, the Dominican with the great pitch, reminded us yet again what great people do: They deliver. "When you see me, you can see a sign of hope, of faith, of determination, of strength, [and] courage with dignity." No matter where you are from, in a world of fallen heroes, being able to point to yourself as a good example is something that is truly great. Some people just miss the point. a custodial account and buy a few shares in a company the child knows, such as Disney, Domino's Pizza or Kellogg. Go online to www.oneshare.com and click on For Kids or For Teens to see long lists of possibilities. Order the stock certificate, frame it and hang it in the kid's room.

Kids and Money: Make Saving Fun When it comes to teaching kids about saving and spending money, it can be a hard sell unless you also make it fun and have the right tools. Piggy bank: Kids need somewhere to put their money. Look for something different, not the ordinary piggy bank (unless your child especially likes farm animals). Look for humorous banks, such as a fat, smiling pig lying on its side, clear glass so the "wealth" inside can be seen, or for kids who like crafts, look online for instructions to make a plastic bottle piggy bank, complete with legs. Toys: Look for Zillions, an ATM bank for kids with sound and lights, a bill and coin feeder, and an LCD screen to give account information. Look for coin banks with a kitten that stretches out a paw to snatch the coin. See Schylling's My Secret Steel Safe, complete with coin slot, combo lock and alarm, or see the Frontier Safe without alarm. Look for the Digi-Piggy for a bank with a digital readout of the cash within. Stocks: Explain what stocks are and how they work, that the child will own a small piece of the company. Open

Wallets: For every cartoon character, sport, Disney film or superhero, there is a wallet with that image for younger kids. For older kids, go with a real wallet. Get them started with a small amount of cash. Games: Look for video games with a money component, such as Gen i Revolution's credit mission, Sand Dollar City, Fun Vault and Bite Club for older kids. Check each game in advance to be sure it's in line with your own money philosophy. The tools aren't all kids need to learn to save money -- they need instruction and daily examples from you. Search online for "teach kids to save money" and you'll find plenty of help, starting when they're about age 3. They need to know about waiting for what they want to buy, setting short- and long-term goals, making choices, earning money from doing chores, dividing money into saving versus spending cash, and saving by buying on sale. Things to know: If people show up at your door offering to lower your utility rates, ask for a brochure and number you can call. No brochure, no business. If they ask to see your latest utility bill, what you're giving them is your name and account number. Before you know it, you'll be signed up under their company, likely at a much higher rate, with a hefty (over $100) cancellation fee.

UTILITY SCAMS When a pair of young girls came to my door, both wearing plastic badges on chains around their necks, I knew they would try to sell me something. When I opened the door, one of them launched into a prepared speech. She specifically stated that they represented our local electric company and that they were doing energy audits to be sure we're all getting the lowest rate. She said she'd need to see my latest electric bill. I said "no thanks" and shut the door. I've seen this before ... third-party power companies trying to sign people up. Within minutes I'd checked them out online and learned that the company is all over the country, with different scams for each state. To be sure, I called the power company and they verified: Scammers had hit the area.

If you made a mistake and have signed up, call your utility immediately so they can lock your account and not let anyone switch you to another provider. If you signed up, your state might have a rescission provision where you can cancel within a few days without penalty. Call your state's consumer line or attorney general office and ask for advice. Best bet: If you don't know who's outside, don't open the door. (c) 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.

best choice. Also known as swamp coolers, evaporative coolers add humidity to the air in your house. They bring in air from the outside, pass it over water-soaked pads, and blow that humidified air inside. If you live in a hot, dry climate like the Southwest, a swamp cooler can be a very efficient way to cool the house. In hot, humid climates, not so much, because the air in the house is already humid.

AIR CONDITIONER ALTERNATIVES

Air conditioners work well in humid climates because they help remove some of that humidity from the air. While they're not dehumidifiers per se, the unit recirculates air in the room. As that air passes over the air conditioner's evaporator coil, the moisture in the air condenses and is drained from the unit, while the air is blown back into the room. That process helps cool the air and reduce mugginess.

Q: What is the difference between an air conditioner and an evaporator? Is one better for my home? I just need something to cool the front room occasionally in the summertime, and I hate window units. -- George F., Burlington, Vt.

Both units need regular maintenance: An evaporative cooler's pads need to be changed every few weeks while in use, and an air conditioner's filter needs to be cleaned or replaced each month in the warm season.

A: An evaporative cooler can be a cost-effective alternative to an air conditioner, but it's not always the

conditioner. These typically cost more than window units (sometimes twice as much for the same BTU level) but can be rolled from room to room as needed and stored out of the way when not needed. Just remember that some portable unit's ventilation hose must vent outside, meaning these units need to stay near a window. Also you probably will need to empty the condensation tray regularly in cheaper units. A final alternative is natural ventilation. If you get cool nights or steady breezes, open windows in the early morning and late evening, and invest in heavy curtains to cover windows in which the sun shines during the afternoon. Add an electric fan to keep fresh air circulating constantly. In certain climates, this can give you a comfortable home except for the hottest, most humid days of the year. HOME TIP: BTUs are important in buying an air conditioner, so find out the minimum BTU level you need for the space you're trying to cool before purchasing.
