SMALL FACTS, BIG STORMS
• The practice of naming hurricanes seems to have begun in a fictional book called “Storm” published in 1941. In this book, a meteorologist amuses himself by naming tropical storms after girls. The idea caught on. It became standard practice in 1950 when there were three different hurricanes going on at the same time in the Caribbean. Meteorologists began choosing names in alphabetical order. In 1978 they started naming hurricanes after men. • The word 'hurricane' may have originated from the Carib god Huracan, a malicious spirit who ruled over fire, wind, and stormy weather and craved human life, haunting the coastlines and delivering destruction, chaos, and death indiscriminately. …turn the page for more

• Hurricanes are born where the ocean is warmest, when it is warmest. The Caribbean Sea gets warmer as the sun passes over it on its way north in June and July; it warms up again when the sun travels south in September and October. Therefore the hurricane season lasts from June through October. Not surprisingly, Florida gets hit by more hurricanes than any other state.

return home from the post office, because the hurricane struck just then and swept his house into the sea.
(continued):
HURRICANE FACTS BLOW THE MAN DOWN • There are many perils attendant with hurricanes: strong winds, high waves, heavy rains causing flooding and landslides, and storm surges. A storm surge is a gigantic dome of water that swells under the low barometric pressure of the hurricane, flooding the coastline. The sea rises a foot for every inch drop in barometric pressure. In the eye of a hurricane where the barometric pressure reaches record lows, this can cause a devastating storm surge. • Three-quarters of all hurricane deaths occur due to drownings in the storm surge. Surges 40 feet tall (12 m) are not uncommon. • The farther the wind blows across the top of the sea unobstructed, the higher it pushes the waves. The taller the waves get, the more they absorb the energy of the wind. The rule of thumb is that the maximum height of the waves equals half the speed of the wind. So a hurricane wind of 150 mph (241 km/hr) can produce waves up to 75 feet (23 m) tall. • Hurricanes usually track forward at between 5 and 15 mph (8 to 18 km/hr). At 15 mph, a hurricane can cover 3,600 miles (5,800 km) in 10 days. They can be up to 600 miles (965 km) wide. Most hurricanes last between 7 and 14 days from the time they form until the time they dissipate when they encounter land. • It is said that in 1938, a resident of Westhampton Beach, NY received in the mail a barometer he had ordered. Opening the package, he was disappointed to find that it registered “hurricane”. He tapped it and smacked it, but still nothing could dislodge the indicator from the hurricane setting. Obviously the barometer was faulty. He wrote a letter of protest to the manufacturer and went to the post office to mail it back. He was never able to
• On September 3, 1821, a hurricane hit New York City and moved north up into New England. A man named William Redfield rode on horseback through the area shortly after the storm passed and noticed as he moved through the area that in the southernmost areas hit by the storm, the trees had all fallen down in the exact opposite direction as the trees that had toppled in the northernmost area damaged by the storm. Upon returning home, Redfield collected information about the storm from newspapers, letters, and ships' logs and afterwards was the first human to come to a great conclusion concerning the nature of hurricanes: "This storm was exhibited in the form of a great whirlwind." • In some places, hurricanes are called cyclones, which is Greek for "wheel" or "coils." • When hurricanes strike places like New England, thousands of elms, birches, spruces, and hemlocks fall, but oaks, hickories, and walnuts do not. That’s because they have taproots that sink like a shaft straight into the earth, whereas other trees have shallow root systems that spread out flat. • In 1954 Hurricane Edna became twins when it reached the New England coast: it split apart and became two storms with two eyes. • In 1963 the weathermen in Taiwan predicted than oncoming hurricane Gloria would bypass the island. However, the storm struck the island head-on the following day, killing some 250 people and causing over $17 million in damage. The weathermen were arrested and charged with criminally negligent forecasting, a crime which carried a penalty of up to ten years in prison. The weathermen brought in experts who testified to the unpredictability of hurricanes. The judge decided that the prosecution had failed to prove criminal intent. The weathermen were freed.
HURRICANES IN HISTORY • Kublai Khan, grandson of Genghis Khan, was getting ready to invade Japan in 1274 when a hurricane blew in. Hundreds of his ships were sunk in the storm and thousands of his troops drowned. Japan was saved. Seven years later he tried to invade Japan again. This time he managed to get to the shores of Japan with some 200,000 men and a thousand ships. Then another hurricane blew in, wrecking the ships and sweeping the beaches clean of soldiers. Kublai Khan no doubt thought of hurricanes as work of the devil, but the Japanese referred to their savior storms as “kamikaze” meaning “divine wind.” • In 1854 during the Crimean War, 500 British soldiers died in the Battle of the Light Brigade at Balaklava. A few weeks later, a hurricane wrecked 13 supply ships that were destined for the British army still stationed in Balaklava. With no supplies, over 8,000 soldiers died during the winter. • In December 1944 a hurricane struck the U.S. Pacific Fleet that was preparing to invade the Philippines. Three destroyers sank, nine ships sustained serious damage, and 19 ships suffered some damage. The storm wrecked 146 planes, and 790 soldiers drowned. The invasion was postponed. Some experts feel that if the invasion had not been drowned out and the Philippines had been re-taken, the war with Japan would have ended without any atomic bombs being dropped. • On November 13, 1970, a hurricane roared up the Bay of Bengal in Pakistan and swamped the area. Half a million people died. Survivors turned to the government for help. But the government of Pakistan was located 2,000 miles away, out of the path of the storm. They sent no aid. Thousands died while waiting for help. The governmental indifference caused such resentment that revolution broke out which hastened the split of Bangladesh, which became a nation independent of Pakistan.

SOREN SORENSEN ADAMS • Soren Sorenson Adams was born in Denmark in 1879. When he was four years old, his family came to America and settled in New Jersey, where he went by the name of Sam Adams. In 1904, Adams got a job working for a company that produced dyes. • It was well known among the employees that a certain deep blue dye would cause uncontrollable sneezing when inhaled, and this was the source of much consternation for the owners of the company, and much amusement for the employees. Adams figured out how to extract the sneeze-inducing derivative from the dye, called dianisidine. When he tested the powder out by blowing it into the faces of a marching band during a parade, it disrupted their performance. He distributed small vials of the powder to his friends, and the demand was so large that he quit his job and went into business marketing his sneezing powder, which he called "Cachoo." • In his first year, he sold 150,000 bottles of Cachoo. But when demand tapered off, Adams turned his attention to other tricks, gadgets, and gags. • Perhaps his greatest invention was the joy buzzer. This tiny mechanical device emits a loud vibrating buzz when two people shake hands, startling the unsuspecting victim. Adams traveled all the way to Dresden, Germany, to find a tool and die maker who designed parts small enough so that the buzzer could easily fit in the palm of a hand. The instant success of the joy buzzer allowed Adams to build a factory and hire a staff. • From there, it was onward and upward as he invented tricks, jokes, and pranks: the squirting flower, the dribble glass, the fake-fly-in-an-ice-cube, the snake in a nut can, itching powder, and the stink bomb.
• Adams was a clever inventor and a shrewd businessman, which allowed his company to thrive, even during the Great Depression. He became known as the father of the novelty prank. His products, wrapped in colorful cartoonish packaging, were available in five-and-dime department stores nationwide, and were sold from ads in the back of comic books. He expanded into simple pocket-sized magic tricks, including the ball-and-vase, the magic coin box, and the three shell game. Trick decks of cards were a popular item. • In 1930, a Toronto rubber company offered Adams the rights to something they had invented: the Razz Cushion, now known as the Whoopie Cushion. Adams turned it down, deeming it "too vulgar" but quickly saw his error when it earned over $50,000 the first year it was on the market. He devised his own version of the gag and added it to his line-up. • Another of his more successful inventions was the exploding cigar. Exploding cigars became a slapstick comedy staple employed by everyone from Groucho Marx, to the Looney Tunes animated characters, to the Joker in the Batman comics. • Sam Adams claimed to have devised over 600 different items, and patented about 40 of them, making him the definitive king of professional pranksters. His original sneezing powder was eventually outlawed over health concerns. Sam Adams actively managed his company right up to his death in 1963 at the age 84. • The company he founded, now under new management, still sells many of Adams' inventions, as well as items such as fake vomit, plastic dog poop, and gum that turns your teeth black. • Sam Adams would be proud to know that, just like snowflakes, no two pieces of fake vomit are the same.

"Madam Belle: Sex, Money, and Influence in a Southern Brothel" by Maryjean Wall (University Press of Kentucky, $24.95) Reviewed by Larry Cox Maryjean Wall, turf writer for the Lexington Herald-Leader for more than 35 years, has documented the fascinating true story of vice and power in the Gilded Age South. At the center of her new book is Belle Brezing, a woman who borrowed money to set up her own brothel, eventually accumulating wealth, power and fame. By the time Belle was 15 years old, she'd had a baby, had watched her mother die and been evicted. During the 1880s, there were limited career paths for young women, especially those unfortunate enough to lack a formal education and social connections. While working at Jenny Hill's bawdy house in Lexington, which incidentally was run out of the former home of first lady Mary Todd Lincoln, Belle acquired the skills, manners and business contacts that allowed her to ascend to power and influence as an internationally known madam. Belle opened her own brothel and leveraged that first house and her early connections with its wealthy pa-
trons to purchase an impressive structure at 59 Megowan Street. The grand opening in 1891 became legendary in Kentucky. Visitors were met with the sounds of an orchestra as they sampled an elegant buffet including imported wines and champagne. It was here that fashionable international travelers, horsemen and civil leaders climbed the five steps to enter what would quickly become one of the most intriguing business destinations in the South. Maryjean Wall began her research of Belle Brezing and her infamous mansion in the 1960s. Since Belle Brezing did not keep a diary and never gave interviews during her lifetime, it was a difficult task, but Wall has achieved the almost impossible. This engaging biography comes as close to revealing the life of Belle as is possible. (c) 2014 King Features Synd., Inc.

HOLLYWOOD -- The ever-working Michael Caine has been promoting his Italian film "Youth," with Jane Fonda, Harvey Keitel, Paul Dano and Rachel Weisz, at the Cannes Film Festival. He's also got the $90 million "Last Witch Hunter," with Vin Diesel and Elijah Wood, due out Oct. 23, and the heist-comedy "Going in Style," with Morgan Freeman, Alan Arkin, Matt Dillon and Ann-Margret, due in May. Ann-Margret's last film was "Lucky," with Colin Hanks, in 2011. Michael Keaton, an Oscar contender last year for "Birdman," has completed filming the drama "Spotlight," with Mark Ruffalo, Rachel McAdams, Liv Schreiber, John Slattery and Stanley Tucci. Keaton is now playing Ray Kroc, who turned Mac and Dick MacDonald's 1950s hamburger restaurant into the billion-dollar "Golden Arches." "The Founder" co-stars Linda Cardellini, with Laura Dern as Kroc's wife, Ethel. *** Director Clint Eastwood's next epic is a bio-pic about Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger, the pilot who safely landed his commercial airplane, with 155 people aboard, in the Hudson River in 2009. Tom Hanks will play Captain Sully, but before we see that, he has a big slate of films being released. The historical-biographical thriller "Bridge of Spies," directed by Steven Spielberg, with Mark Rylance and Alan Alda, arrives Oct. 16. The film about the 1960 U-2 spy plane incident was written by the Coen Brothers and Matt Charman. That precedes the comedy-drama "A Hologram for the King," with Tom Skerritt, and "Ithaca," with Meg Ryan, Sam Shepard and Melanie Griffith. October 2016 brings the Ron Howard thriller "Inferno," with Felicity Jones and Ben Foster.

*** "The Man from U.N.C.L.E." appears to have bombed, costing $75 million and only earning $26.5 million in its first weekend, but Armie Hammer has moved on. He's already filming the historical-period drama "Birth of a Nation," about the slave rebellion, with Gabrielle Union, Jackie Earle Haley Tom Hanks and Penelope Ann Miller; and "Free Lance," with Sharlto Copley (the South African actor known for "District 9," "The A-Team," "Maleficent" and "Chappie"), Brie Larson and Cillian Murphy. Meanwhile, "Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation" more than recouped its $150 million cost with its more than $400 million box-office bonanza. Tom Cruise's next is the thriller "Mena," with Sarah Wright (of "Parks and Recreation" and "Marry Me"). Set in the 1980s, Cruise plays Barry Seal, a former TWA pilot who became a drug dealer. Wright is married to "NCIS: Los Angeles" star Eric Christian Olsen. *** The Broadway rock musical "Hedwig and the Angry Inch" will close Sept. 13. Hedwig, the gender-bender East German singer, originally played by John Cameron Mitchell and revived by Neil Patrick Harris, Andrew Rannells, Michael C. Hall, Darren Criss and finally Taye Diggs, has fascinated audiences here and abroad. This revival's success prompted "Hedwig" authors Stephen Trask, who also wrote the music and lyrics for "Rock of Ages," and Chris Darienzo to plan a "Hedwig" sequel. They also plan to turn the Martin Scorsese/Jerry Lewis/Robert DeNiro 1983 black comedy, "King of Comedy," into a musical. The film cost $19 million and only made $2.5 million in theaters. Maybe they should combine the two and make "Hedwig the Queen of Comedy."

Q: I got hooked on this show on HBO called "The Leftovers," and I wondered when and if it was coming back. I hope so! -- Kelly K., via email Regina King A: The drama/fantasy/mystery series, season one of which was based on the book of the same title by Tom Perrotta (who also wrote "Little Children"), will return Oct. 4. The 10-episode second season -- starring Justin Theroux, Amy Brenneman, Liv Tyler, Regina King and Kevin Carroll -- will be based on all-new material, and will take viewers to a little town in Texas. I spoke with series newcomer Regina King about season two, and she can't wait for fans to see what executive producer/ co-creator/writer Damon Lindelof has in store. "One of the things that has remained since last season is how much Damon helps you through your character, because there's so much secrecy with the show. We don't know what's coming from episode to episode. We signed on based on this amazing first script and just the trust that Damon, being so talented, is going to continue with a season as impressive as that first script you read." She could tell me only a teeny bit about season two: "It takes place in Jarden, Texas, which is referred to as Miracle, Texas, because we are the one town where no one left when the Sudden Departure happened. All of these people are trying to get into our town so they can be touched with what's special about it. You'll discover all these weird things that have come to happen to Jarden, which has heightened to the third power." *** Q: My book club just finished "The Zookeeper's Wife," and I loved it. Is it true it's being made into a movie? -- Mallory F., via email

A: "The Zookeeper's Wife," which is based on the unpublished diary of Antonina Zabinska, recounts the true story of how she and her husband, Jan Zabinski, director of the Warsaw Zoo, saved the lives of 300 Jews who had been imprisoned in the Warsaw Ghetto following the German invasion of Poland on Sept. 1, 1939. Award-winning actress Jessica Chastain has signed on to play Antonina, and Daniel Bruhl and Johan Heldenberg are set to co-star. The movie is scheduled to premiere sometime in 2016.

I would hate to think that I might pass it on to my grandchildren by touching them, or changing their diapers, etc. I work in a hospital and feel I have a "dirty" secret, because all I get is, "Just wash your hands." Any information that you may have on the subject would be greatly appreciated. -- M.D.
Most Medications Increase Fall Risk DEAR DR. ROACH: You recently wrote that antihistamines used for sleep can increase the risk of falls. Are there any sleep aids that don't increase fall risk? -- C.A.L. ANSWER: Since almost all medications are associated with fall risk, reducing the overall number of medications should be a goal for all of us who prescribe medication for older people. Some medications are more risky than others, such as the antihistamines I mentioned, but also prescription sleep aids such as Ambien, Lunesta and Sonata, antidepressants such as amitriptyline (Elavil) and others, diazepam (Valium) and related drugs. Major tranquilizers such as Seroquel are high risk. Insomnia itself increases fall risk, so effective treatment that doesn't use medications that cause problems the next day is the goal. Melatonin works for some people; melatonin 0.3 mg might be effective and appears to have a lower risk of falls. Better still, non-drug treatment such as cognitive behavior therapy, including sleep hygiene, has no risk of medication-associated falls and may reduce overall fall risk by improving sleep. Basics of sleep hygiene include avoiding long (longer than 20 minutes) naps, avoiding bright light (including TV and computer) before bed, reserving the bed strictly for sleep and maintaining the same bedtime and wake time every day. A CBT therapist can give much more detailed and personalized information. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: After a terrible bout of IBS, my doctor tested me for C. diff, and it came back positive. He

In your case, the bacteria Clostridium dificile, universally called "C. diff," is present in about 3 percent of all healthy adults. However, somewhere between 20 percent and 50 percent of patients in hospitals and longterm-care facilities have asymptomatic C. diff. The spores of C. diff are very, very difficult to eradicate and can be found on many surfaces, and so hospital workers as well as patients may become infected (with symptoms of diarrhea) or can be carriers. This may be how you acquired the bacteria. Current guidelines do not recommend treatment for carriers. The most important way to prevent your passing on the infection is good hand-washing. The best method is warm water and soap after using the bathroom. (My hospital recommends singing "Happy Birthday" in your head twice to be sure you are washing long enough.) Alcohol sanitizers are ineffective for C diff. By being meticulous in hand-washing, you can minimize the risk of passing on the bacteria. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Even Modest Drinking Increases Breast Cancer Risk
Reducing fat in your diet is better for weight loss than restricting carbohydrates, according to a new study published by the National Institutes of Health. Researchers monitored the diets of 19 obese men and women at the Metabolic Clinical Research Unit at NIH headquarters in Bethesda, Md. Participants stayed at NIH for two twoweek periods. They ate a diet that restricted calories by reducing total fat on one visit and total carbohydrates on the other visit. Reducing dietary fat resulted in a 68 percent higher rate of body fat loss and caused more total body fat loss in participants compared to the carbo-

Having just one drink per day increases breast cancer risk, according to a study published in the British Medical Journal. Researchers monitored alcohol consumption for 88,084 women and 47,881 men as part of the Nurses’ Health Study and the Health Professionals Follow-Up Study. For women, having just one alcoholic drink per day increased the risk for alcohol-related cancers (mainly breast cancer) by 13 percent, compared with those who consumed no alcohol. Among men, colorectal cancer was the principal alcohol-related cancer. Researchers suspect ethanol and other compounds found in alcohol may be potential mechanisms. Many previous studies have also found that moderate alcohol intake increases breast cancer risk.

Cutting Meat Out of Diet Improves Mood Omnivores who cut all meat out of their diets experience mood improvements, according to a poster session presented this week at the annual American Public Health Association conference. Researchers at Arizona State University divided 39 omnivorous participants into three dietary groups: control (made no changes to diet), fish (consumed three to four servings of fish per week and no other meat), and vegetarian (consumed no meat and no eggs). The vegetarian group experienced mood improvements in both tension and confusion categories, while the meat-eating participants and fish eaters showed no significant changes in mood.
Lowering Fat, Increasing Carbs Better for Type 2 Diabetes Reducing dietary fat while increasing carbohydrate intake is best for type 2 diabetes, according to a study published online in the European Journal of Nutrition. Researchers followed the diets of 1,785 type 2 diabetes patients as part of the TOSCA.IT Study. An increase from less than 25 percent to 35 percent or more in dietary fat intake raised triglycerides, LDL cholesterol, and HbA1c levels, while an increase from less than 45 percent to 60 percent or more in complex carbohydrate intake lowered all of these levels. Increasing fiber and lowering added sugar intakes also had positive effects on cholesterol and blood sugar levels. This is the first study to show that small changes in fat and carbohydrate intake affect metabolic risk factors in a large population of type 2 diabetes patients. Seal and place on grill, turning occasionally, for 10 to 12 minutes or until veggies are tender. Experiment with different spices, marinades and sauces when preparing vegetables, and don't be afraid to try various flavors. Store-bought mixes and marinades may have extra sodium, sugar and calories compared to a specialized homemade version. Balsamic vinegar or other flavored vinegars are great for drizzling over grilled vegetables or using in a marinade. As always, practice safe grilling techniques and food safety. The next time you plan to fire up the grill, remember to invite some vegetables to the party.

Press cloves to remove the softened garlic and add to mixing bowl. Add remaining tablespoon of salt, lemon juice, olive oil, yogurt and dried mint. Mix well, and set aside to rest for a few minutes. Check seasoning and adjust. 5. Put mixture in a low serving bowl. Drizzle with pomegranate molasses, if using, and remaining 1 tablespoon olive oil. Sprinkle with chopped mint and parsley.

GRILLED VEGETABLE DIP • Make this Middle Eastern-flavored dip several hours or up to a day in advance.
THE VEGETARIAN GRILL Football season is upon us, and when it comes to tailgates and game-watching parties, people tend to think of hamburgers, steaks, brats and hot dogs for grill entrees. Instead, move the meat over and make room for vegetables. Why not try zucchini, eggplant, asparagus, bell peppers or portabella mushrooms? Grilling vegetables caramelizes them and brings out a sweetness not typically found in other cooking preparations. Even if you're not a sports fan, grilling offers an opportunity to prepare vegetables in a quick and different way. Many people think everything tastes better on the grill, which also can hold true for vegetables. Some people don't like eggplant, zucchini or asparagus -- until they try it grilled! Taste is not the only benefit. Vegetables cook so quickly on the grill that they retain much of their vitamin and nutrient content. To prepare vegetables, have the grill warm, but not as hot as you would for grilling meat. Lightly brush the vegetables with olive oil and put them directly on the grill, turning until tender. Try larger hunks, like half a green pepper, large slices of squash or portabella mushroom caps, which are large enough to sit on the grates without falling through. 2 pounds small Yukon gold potatoes, washed and dried 1 large bunch parsley, about 1-inch of stems still attached, thoroughly washed and roughly chopped with scissors 1 bunch basil, about 1-inch of stems still attached, thoroughly washed and dried, roughly chopped with scissors 1 clove garlic 2 teaspoons salt 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 2 tablespoons water 1/2 cup extra-virgin olive oil 4 to 6 tablespoons red wine vinegar 1 small purple onion, peeled and chopped finely 2 stalks celery, chopped 2 tablespoons smooth Dijon mustard 1 tablespoon capers and 1 teaspoon caper liquid 2 to 3 tablespoons sweet pickle relish
1. Place eggplant, bell pepper, onion and jalapeno pepper on a sheet pan. Sprinkle 2 tablespoons of olive oil and 1/2 teaspoon salt on the vegetables. Toss to coat. Wrap the head of garlic in foil.
1. Micro-cook 8 to 10 of the potatoes in microwave on HIGH for 15 to 20 minutes. Cook the remaining potatoes in batches until all are tender when pierced with a knife. Alternately, heat oven to 350 F. Arrange potatoes in single layer in a baking dish and put in center of oven. Bake for about 50 minutes.
2. Put whole eggplants, bell pepper and onion halves, the whole jalapeno and the foil-wrapped head of garlic on a barbecue grate over hot coals. Turning the vegetables frequently, cook until the skin is completely blackened and charred and the vegetables begin to soften and collapse, about 10 minutes. The garlic should be soft when pressed. Set aside to cool.
2. Meanwhile, in a food processor (or blender), combine the parsley, basil and garlic. Season with salt and pepper. Add the water and blend. With the motor running, pour the olive oil through the top in a slow, steady stream, until well-combined, but still chunky. 3. In a serving bowl (use one large enough to add in the potatoes later), stir together red wine vinegar, onion, celery, mustard, capers and liquid, sweet pickle relish and half of parsley/oil puree. 4. When the potatoes are tender and yielding when pierced with the tip of a knife, remove from microwave or the oven; allow to cool for a few minutes. Peel half of them. Some potato skin adds a nice flavor in the salad. Cut any big potatoes in quarters, the rest in half.

ENDORSEMENTS • Tennis player Rod Laver was paid to endorse a certain type of tennis racket. However, he really disliked the brand and preferred his original racket. He solved the problem by using his old racket, which was painted to look like the kind he was endorsing.
MEMORABLE CAMPAIGNS • In 1970, the Dr Pepper company decided it wanted to make itself better known in New York City. It spent $1.3 million in advertising, including 13,200 bus posters, 6,600 subway ads, 150 TV spots, and almost 2,000 radio ads. The next year sales in New York increased by 1.5 million cases. At 35¢ per can, the company gained $9.1 million gross from this promotion— seven times the amount spent on the advertising. • William Wrigley once said, “Anybody can make gum. The problem is selling it.” He decided the solution was advertising, and he turned into not only the world’s largest gum manufacturer, but also the world’s largest advertiser. He spent $100,000 on an advertising campaign in New York City that flopped. So he tried spending another $100,000 just on Broadway, and it also flopped. Then he spent $100,000 advertising in small New York towns, buying every billboard, all the streetcar space, and huge newspaper spreads. Orders poured in. • An ad for a dental clinic in Topeka, Kansas in the 1920s featured a grinning boy with red hair, freckles and a missing front tooth. The boy was not worried a bit, because his dentist was Painless Romine. The picture of the grinning boy appeared also in ads for shoes and soft drinks. In the 1950s the boy was adopted by Mad Magazine, and named Alfred E. Neuman. In 1956 he was even featured as a write-in candidate for president, but lost. • A study done of U.S. television ads showed the following words to be the most frequently used: new, improved, better, extra, fresh, clean, beautiful, free, good, great, and light.
• In 1972 Lou Brock, baseball's biggest base stealer, was shown in an ad in which he tore around the bases, then credited a certain type of candy for his speed. In a landmark decision stemming from this, the Federal Trade Commission ruled candy can't be credited as the source of a person's speed. They also ruled that Domino Sugar could not advertise themselves as the "official sugar" of the National Football League because all brands of sugar are identical. Later the FTC ruled that any athlete endorsing a product would have to be a bona fide user of that product.
QUICK QUIP • The sports writer was interviewing the coach. "What's the line-up for this season?" "Well," replied the coach, "It looks like this: Jones and Jackson will do the razor blade commercials; Smith and Brown will go to deodorants; Taylor and Fitzpatrick will appear for shaving cream; and McGregor is slated for breakfast cereals."
IT'S A FACT • An Indianapolis mortician advertised that his coffins came with a “lifetime guarantee.” • Jim Backus, who did the voice of Mr. Magoo and played Mr. Howell on "Gilligan's Island," recorded 15,000 commercials for La-Z-Boy recliners and got listed in the "Guinness Book of World Records" for the effort.

"Space Jam" is another relic of the '90s. I didn't watch the whole thing, but the parts I did catch made me happy that they will get to know Bill Murray more than anything. Bugs Bunny and the rest of the Looney Toons crew definitely had lost their touch by this time, but they still were getting laughs. The one thing I wanted to emphasize to the kids was that no matter what anybody said about Oscar Robertson or Wilt Chamberlain or Kobe or Lebron James, the person they were watching struggle through each of his lines was the greatest basketball player of all-time.
THE WAYBACK MACHINE For the past few weekends, I've had the chance to watch some old sports movies with my nephews -- whom I refer to as the minions -- or, I should say, I watch them watch movies. One week it was "The Babe" with John Goodman, and the other day "Space Jam." I didn't like "The Babe." The guy's life already read like fiction -- there was really no need to make up more stuff about him. I'm not going to get into the specifics, but they took some liberties with the timeline and they foisted a few of the urban legends on him that weren't true (like the Yankees wore pinstripes because he was fat). So after the movie, using the wonders of the web, I showed my nephew what the real Babe looked like.
To say that Michael Jordan dominated his era is indisputable. But what sets him apart from all the other all-time greats is the fact that he played with a style that nobody could really duplicate -- or at least has not since. There have been great players to be sure, but not like Mike. Trying to explain this to my nephew sounded a little like this: "You know how when guys dunk, they jump up in the air and fly to the basket? Well, when Jordan jumped up in the air, he flew around for a while like those trick planes you saw at the air show, then he would veer left and alternate his trajectory and vectors and stuff, and then he would dunk. No question, he was the best." "I have a question," said one. "What's that?" "What's a trajecty?" That's a good question. It's always good to take a look back.
"He's not fat, he's just really big!" Exactly. Now watch the guy hit. He may not have hit .390 today or 61 homers every year, but trust me, Babe Ruth would very much be an All-Star in today's game as well.

• Look online at americasaves.org for ideas about saving and reducing debt. (No need to sign up on The Pledge because that gives away your email address.) Don't miss its Personal Wealth Estimator. You'll enter your assets (financial and non-financial) and your debts (mortgage, credit cards, loans). The bottom line will give your current net worth. If you continue to Part 2, you can calculate your future net worth. That in itself can be an incentive to save.
GETTING TOUGH WITH SAVINGS AND DEBT With the economy inching its way back to health, consumers are looking for ways to get out from under mountains of debt and begin saving again.
• The National Foundation for Credit Counseling (www. nfcc.org) has a program showing how to save a million dollars. You enter your goal (it doesn't have to be a million) and when you'd like to accumulate that amount of money, your age and other information, and it will calculate how much you need to save on a monthly basis to reach your savings goal. This is a great way to beef up your emergency savings or save for a special goal, such as a house.
Here are a few ideas, both easy and not so easy. • Call your bank and ask to automatically transfer $25 a month from your checking into your savings account. If you can swing it, make that amount $100. It's money you'll never see, don't have to make decisions about, and likely won't ever miss. • If you've been using credit cards for miscellaneous expenses while you're out, grab the three most recent monthly statements and a pen. Mark off all those purchases you remember. If there are purchases you don't remember, that's a warning. If the bulk of your charges are for daily purchases or lunches or dinners out, challenge yourself to not put those expenses on a credit card for a month.
• While you're on the NFCC site, look at the Cost of Credit program before you use a credit card to make a large purchase that you can't pay off in three months. Enter your intended expense, the interest rate and your payment. The program will calculate how much interest you'll pay until you have a zero balance. Play with the figures to see if you can shave down that interest by paying extra each month. With the economy in better shape, it IS possible to get back a feeling of financial normalcy, but it will take work. (c) 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.
You can sign up on the phone (call the new plan or Medicare, if you're making a change) or online. Medicare.gov has a section on signing up, and it can answer hundreds of questions, such as: I'm still working at age 65, with company insurance. If I don't sign up now for Part B, will I have to pay a penalty later? Can I have Medicare and Marketplace coverage at the same time?
You also can find information on coverage for procedures, claims and appeals, plus doctors and plans in your area. Or you can call 1-800 MEDICARE (1800-633-4227). It's staffed 24 hours a day, including weekends. For plan help, ask Medicare for the State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) in your state, or see www.shiptacenter.org. (c) 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.
MEDICARE OPEN ENROLLMENT Mark this on your calendar: Oct. 15. That's the date that Medicare Open Enrollment begins, the period when you can make changes to your health and drug coverage. It runs through Dec. 7. It's during this period that you'll need to take a hard look at how well your plan has served you so far this year. If you decide that all is well, do nothing, whether you have the Original or an Advantage plan. Your current plan will roll over into 2016 when the new coverage starts Jan. 1. Consider your drugs. If you're on a new one and will likely stay on it, see whether your drug plan covers it. If not, you might look at other plans. Changing your mind: If you have a Medicare Advantage Plan, you can switch back to your original Medicare between Jan. 1 and Feb. 14. If you decide to switch back, you also can add a drug plan at that time.

DEPRESSION GLASS Q: I have inherited five pieces of Depression Glass, but have no idea of the pattern. My mom thinks the pattern is from the 1930s. I am enclosing some pictures and hope you can help me. -- Betty, Sun City West, Arizona A: Your Depression Glass isn't as old as you thought. The pattern is Forest Green and was manufactured by Anchor Hocking Glass Company during the early 1950s. It is a common pattern and typical prices are a goblet, $10; mixing bowl, $11; and a cup, $7.50. The company was
