Arthur Wynne was the editor of the puzzle page in the magazine section of the Sunday edition of the New York World. In 1913, he was looking for something new, having grown tired of word squares, hidden words, and anagrams. Fooling around with a word square, he decided to alter it a bit. He called the result a word-cross. It was instantly popular, and became a regular feature. When it was left out one week, the paper was deluged with angry letters. For the next ten years, the World was the only paper that published crosswords. A rival paper, the New York Times, thought crosswords were merely a passing fad and predicted their swift demise. Come along with Tidbits as we do a crossword!

GREAT BEGINNINGS • In 1924, two young men formed a partnership and started a publishing company. Problem was, they had nothing to publish. Then one of the men went to dinner at his aunt’s house. His aunt was looking for a Christmas present for her daughter. She mentioned that the girl was addicted to the crossword puzzles published in the New York World. She asked her nephew if he knew of any place where she could buy a book of crosswords as a gift. He called around the next day, and discovered that no one in the world published books of crossword puzzles. He suggested to his business partner that they become the ďŹ rst publishing company to do so.

• When the two publishers told their consultants they intended to publish crossword books, the consultants felt the idea would fail—it would be too monotonous, they said. They were counselled to publish the book under a pseudonym so that if the book failed, their real name would not be associated with the failure. So they published 3,600 copies of the book under the name of Plaza Publishing Co. • Advance sales were slow as booksellers felt the book would not sell. But on the day the book came out, the two publishers ran an ad next to the daily crossword in the paper. Book stores were swamped with requests—40,000 copies sold in the ďŹ rst few weeks. One distributor ordered 55,000 copies, then called back and ordered a quarter million more. Discarding their fake name of Plaza Publishing, the two men resumed using their original name: Simon and Schuster.
CROSSWORD COMPETITIONS

• In 1970 a London newspaper held a crossword competition. They printed four crosswords of increasing difďŹ culty in the paper. Over 20,000 people correctly completed the ďŹ rst; 1,000 managed the second; 302 completed the third; and only 42 got everything right

on the fourth. All 302 people who made it through the third puzzle were invited to the two-day finals. During the semi-finals, they were given half an hour to finish each of eight crosswords. The 36 finalists were asked to complete four more. The winner was Roy Dean, a 43-year-old Foreign Office diplomat who recently returned from 10 years in Sri Lanka— where he had never even seen a crossword. • One shady outfit who ran a crossword lottery claimed that no one won the grand prize because they all missed 23 Across. The clue was: “To have to wait in ______ in the dentist’s office is infuriating.” Everybody filled in “Pain.” But the correct answer, they said, was “Vain.” • In 1926 two men composed a crossword puzzle and placed it in several newspapers. They announced that anyone who correctly completed the puzzle and mailed it in with a $1 entry fee would be eligible to win the grand prize. Within the week, entries were arriving by the van load and they were taking their money to the bank in suitcases. • Crossword competitions became so popular in India in the 1950s that parliament tried to make them illegal on the grounds that the fees to enter the crossword contests were leading people to financial ruin.
STRANGE PUZZLES • In 1972 in the London Times, readers of the classifieds were amazed to find a strange page in the back of the section. All of the column headings were in place—cars for sale, houses for rent—but all the ads were missing. The only thing normal about the page was the usual
crossword down at the bottom corner where it always was. Those who completed the crossword discovered amusing messages on the value of butter. The entire page was an attention-grabbing ad for butter.
• Then there was the man with bad handwriting who wrote the clue “Catholic chief.” The answer was “Pope” but the typesetter thought it said “Dope.” They got plenty of letters on that one.
• A San Francisco paper once sold advertising space in the little black squares of the grid.
• Another paper printed the clue “Confederate General.” The answer was U.S. Grant— and a lot of people were surprised to find that Grant was a Confederate!
• One innovative crossword publisher came out with a book that had a number of perforated pieces of tracing paper in it. Puzzlers were to tear out a piece of the tracing paper and put it over the top of the puzzle they wanted to solve, leaving the book clean and unmarked for the next person to use. • Robert Stilgenbauer of Los Angeles spent 11 years constructing a crossword with 3,185 down clues and 3,149 across. Over 125,000 copies were distributed, but none have been completed yet. • One variety of crossword had two possible answers for every clue.
• One hard-up crossword writer printed the clue, “Six consonants and the letter ‘A’ five times.” “Panama Canal” was what he had in mind, but one indignant puzzler submitted a number of answers that also fit, including Bahama Macaw, Sahara Sarah, Havana Madam, and Abracadabra. • One magazine in 1958 accidentally printed the wrong diagram with the right set of clues. A few people actually managed to reconstruct the crossword from scratch. • One clever clue was “An important city in Czechoslovakia” to which the answer was Oslo. Yes, Oslo is in Norway, but look at the letters in the middle of the word “Czechoslovakia.”
-OOPS• One crossword composer wrote the clue “to make a go of.” The answer was “succeed.” But the paper made a typo when printing it, and it said, “to make a goof.” Calls and letters poured in. • The same composer was once called on by a cross crossworder who could not find the answer to the clue “manager of the Globe Theater.” He had called the Globe Theater and found it had two managers. Neither of their names fit. He was surprised to find the clue referred to William Shakespeare. • An 8-year-old boy caught another crossword error with the clue “had a wooden leg.” Captain Ahab was the only answer that fit, but Ahab had an ivory leg, not a wooden one.

HOLLYWOOD -- Despite a lot of negative reviews and comments, "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" still has managed to gross more than $800 million since its opening. Warner Brothers is apparently disappointed in the way attendance fell off in the second week and fears it won't reach the $1 billion mark. We'll cry for them. It didn't stop Warners from announcing that Ben Affleck will stand alone in the next Batman flick. Five recent films have broken the top 100 grossing films, and they are No. 66 "Deadpool," No. 58 "Batman v Superman," No. 46 "Zootopia," No. 40 "Spectre" and No. 3 "Star Wars: The Force Awakens." Seems the only way to make movie moneymakers is with special effects, animation and James Bond. *** Looks like Barbra Streisand finally will have her swansong musical now that STX Entertainment has signed on to produce the reboot of the musical "Gypsy," with "Rain Man" Oscar-winner Barry Levinson directing. Though he hasn't directed musicals before, "Gypsy" is story-driven with great music by Stephen Sondheim and lyrics by Jule Styne. The original Mama Rose was Ethel Merman (1960), who lost her Tony Award bid to Mary Martin, who won for "The Sound of Music." Rosalind Russell played Mama Rose in the 1962 film version, but didn't do her own singing. In 1975, Angela Lansbury won a Tony for her Mama Rose, as did Tyne Daly in 1989. Bette Midler won a Golden Globe Award in 1993 for her TV version. Bernadette Peters was a hit in 2003, while Patti LaPone won a Tony for her revival in 2008. STX Chairman Adam Fogelson said, "Its Barbra Streisand doing one more, if not the last, movie musical of her career."
Q: I remember a while back I saw a reality show where New Kids on the Block were on a cruise ship with a bunch of fans. Will that be back for another season? — Geena F., via email A: The members of NKOTB will indeed be setting sail once again with their fans with the premiere of the second season of "Rock This Boat: New Kids on the Block" starting Thursday, June 9, at 8 p.m. ET/PT on Pop TV. (Pop is a basic-cable and satellite-TV network that is a joint venture between CBS and Lionsgate.) This season of the music reality series brings fans intimate access to all five members of the band -- Danny Wood, Donnie Wahlberg, Joey McIntyre, Jonathan Knight and Jordan Knight -- as they engage with each other and rock out with their fans, both on- and offstage, in 10 new television episodes. This season also will feature pre-cruise video shot in each of their homes, exclusive access to rehearsals for deck parties and concerts, and revealing looks inside their cruiseship cabins. *** Q: I am hooked on "Quantico." Please tell me it will be back for another season! -- Eric P., Lancaster, Pennsylvania A: ABC's "Quantico" has been a breakout hit for the network -- and for series star Priyanka Chopra -- so you can bet it'll be back for a second season. In fact, it was one of 15 ABC shows that got an early-renewal announce-

*** I talked with Frances Davis, who was married to jazz great Miles Davis. The recently released film "Miles Ahead" follows their marriage from 1958 to 1968, with Don Cheadle playing Miles and Emayatzy Corinealdi playing Frances. "Before we were married in 1957," Frances revealed, "I was cast as a singer and dancer in the original production of 'West Side Story.' I went to Actor's Equity to join and found there was already a Frances Taylor in the union, so I used my middle name and became Elizabeth Taylor. That's why on the program and cast album it lists Elizabeth Taylor as a member of the cast." In 1965 she happened to meet Richard Burton, and he insisted she visit the set of "The Sandpiper." Who would turn down Richard Burton? When she got to the set she was introduced to his wife, Elizabeth Taylor, by Burton, who said, "I want you to meet the chocolate Elizabeth Taylor!" As we all know, Elizabeth had a penchant for chocolate! (c) 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.
ment. Other returning shows include: "Grey's Anatomy," "Scandal," "How to Get Away with Murder," "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.," "Once Upon a Time," "Modern Family," "The Goldbergs," "blackish," "Fresh Off the Boat," "The Middle," "America's Funniest Home Videos," "The Bachelor," "Dancing With the Stars" and "Shark Tank."

If you don't see your favorite show on this list, it doesn't mean that it has been canceled; it just means the network has not come to a definite decision as of this writing. (Although we can pretty much assume that "Blood and Oil" and "Wicked City" are dead in the water.) *** Q: Do you know if the following series will be returning? If so, do you know when? The shows are: "Tyrant," "Graceland" and "Hell on Wheels." Seems like our favorites keep being canceled. I hope that's not so for the above. -- Barb B., via email A: I have good news on two out of the three. First, the bad news: USA network canceled "Graceland" back in October, so that series is no more. However, there is better news on the way. "Hell on Wheels" still has the back-seven episodes of its fifth and final season yet to air, which will most likely be sometime this summer, although AMC has yet to announce a date. Also, FX's "Tyrant" has been renewed for a third season, which also will premiere this summer. * It was 20th-century English novelist E.M. Forster who made the following sage observation: "We must be willing to let go of the life we have planned, so as to have the life that is waiting for us." * If you're a pogonophobe, the rise of hipsterism in recent years is not good news -- anyone afraid of beards isn't going to get far in public these days without confronting one. * For centuries, the wrinkling of skin on fingers and toes when they soak in water was cause for puzzlement (among those who take the time to wonder about such things, if nobody else). Researchers believe they've found the answer: traction. Like the treads on a tire, the wrinkles of wet skin help improve the gripping power of

* You might be surprised to learn that immigration was not a national issue until the late 19th century. Up until 1890, when President Benjamin Harrison declared Ellis Island to be the first federal immigration center, foreigners who wanted to live in America were handled on a state-by-state basis.
* Scotsmen and their descendants make up almost half of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, and almost three-quarters of American presidents.
* John Sylvan is known as the creator of Keurig coffee pods, used in abundance throughout the world these days. Despite the success of his inventions, however, he refuses to use them himself; he says that he abhors the effect the non-recyclable, non-biodegradable pods have on the environment.
* There was a scientist once who made it his mission to taste as many different kinds of meat as he possibly could. In his opinion, the worst tasting was mole meat. I won't argue. There probably aren't very many people who would be willing to gain enough experience in that field to be able to debate the matter.
* Of all the actors who have portrayed James Bond in films before 2015, Pierce Brosnan racked up by far the most kills per movie. (The tally for last October's "Spectre" has not yet been counted.)

The name is very descriptive -- in Japanese, "midori" means "green." * Most people know that a human has 46 chromosomes, but how do we compare to other living things? Not surprisingly, an ant has only two. A fruit fly has eight. A garden pea has 14. Your pet dog has 78. And a garden fern? It has 1,260 chromosomes! (c) 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.

STORIES BEHIND PLANT NAMES • “Azalea” comes from the Latin “azaleos” meaning dry or parched. The plant was named in the belief that it grew only in dry soils. • “Rhodon” is Greek for rose, and “dendron” means tree: rhododendron.
• The Sanskrit word “parna” meaning a wing or feather became the German word “farn” which became the Anglo-Saxon word “fearn” and is now our fern. • Lichens come from the Greek verb “leichein” meaning to lick up, because they seem to lick their way across the ground. • “Mistel” is an old Anglo-Saxon word meaning dung, and “tan” meant twig. “Misteltan” or “the little dung twig” was so named because birds eat the berries off the twigs and the seeds are deposited in their dung. Today the word has turned into mistletoe.
formed Mentha into a lowly plant that would forever afterwards be trampled upon by humans. Pluto felt sorry for Mentha, and decreed that the more the plant was trampled, the sweeter it would smell. Today, Mentha is called mint. • Chamomile came from the Greek words “chamai” meaning “on the ground,” and “melon” meaning “apple.” • The Spanish word “zarza” means bramble, and “parilla” means a vine. “Zarzaparilla” came into English as sarsaparilla.
• Iris was the goddess of the rainbow who was in charge of receiving the souls of dying women. The god Juno was so impressed with her purity that he named a flower after her.
• “Wych” is the Anglo-Saxon word meaning “to bend” resulting in witch hazel: the bending hazel.
• Lobelia was named in honor of botanist Matthias L'Obel. The wisteria vine was named after naturalist Dr. Casper Wistar.
• “Gar” is old English for spear, and “leac” is the original way of spelling leek. “Garleac” is now garlic, a leek shaped like a spear.
• Marigolds were named after the virgin Mary: Mary's gold.
• The Chinese word “jen-shen” meant man-plant, referring to the shape of the root. It resulted in the word ginseng.
• Cranberries were first called “cranebarries” because the stamens of the flowers look like the beak of a crane. Likewise, geraniums were named from the Greek word “geranos” meaning crane, because the seed pods are pointed like the bill of a crane.
• Mentha was the mythical mistress of Pluto, who ruled Hades. Pluto's wife was so jealous that she trans-
• Nettles were so named because they were originally used to weave nets.
• “Phlox” is the Greek word for fire, and phlox was named because it is fire red. Phlox is also the root of the word “phlegm,” because phlegm was thought to cause fiery fevers. • The Greeks thought that the leaves of the common garden flower alyssum could cure the madness caused by being bitten by a rabid animal. Since “lyssa” was the word for madness and “a-” is a negative prefix, the alyssum was born. • Columbine comes from the Latin word “columba” meaning dove because the flowers resemble a circle of doves. • Larkspur was so named because the flower resembles the spur on the back of the feet of birds in the lark family. • “Primus” is Latin for first, and primrose is one of the first flowers to appear in the spring.
• Strawberry comes from the word “streaw” which means strew, because the plant strews runners across the ground.

"LETTUCE" CELEBRATE SPRING One of my favorite memories of spring is visiting my favorite local urban farm and looking down the rows of emerald lettuce greens, snap peas and spring onions. Lettuces are a cool-weather crop and spring onions, also known as green onions or scallions, are at their vibrant best when the weather is mild. What I love the most about lettuce greens is the vast array of flavors, colors and textures. Break out of the salad bowl rut and try a variety of lettuce greens in non-traditional ways. Here's an overview of some of the more interesting types of lettuce greens:
Arugula or Rocket Typically has long, spiked, dark green leaves and a strong, peppery flavor, especially when the leaves are larger and wild-harvested. Cultivated arugula varies in intensity of flavor, so taste before using. Arugula adds a bold punch to salads or an intense note as an ingredient in hearty dishes.
Little Gem lettuce A mixture of soft leaves with a slight crunch, similar to butter lettuce in texture.
This lettuce grows in a tight bunch of four or five leaves attached to a root. It has more flavor and texture than most salad greens, but requires more care when cleaning because grit and dirt tend to settle in the rosette-shaped leaves near the roots.
Dandelion greens Dark emerald in color and bitter, these greens offer a distinctive flavor component when added raw, and lose some of their sharpness when cooked low and slow.
Escarole With its subtle bite, hearty texture and longer growing season, escarole is sweeter and at its tender best during the warm spring months. Add it raw to provide complexity to a salad or as an interesting addition to cooked dishes in place of spinach.
Pea greens These are the giant, tangled vines on which peas grow. Pea greens are typically available at farmers markets in spring and early summer. *** Angela Shelf Medearis is an award-winning children's author, culinary historian and the author of seven cookbooks. If you had been hoping to go to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services website and take a look at its new hospital ratings, you'll be disappointed. It doesn't exist yet. The very day before the site was to launch, it was delayed.
FREE CONSULTATION 305-639-5195
It seems that Congress, along with the hospital industry, pushed to stop the launch in its tracks. For the survey, hospitals are rated for more than 100 measures of care, but the information is often confusing. (Or perhaps they're afraid the information will make them look bad.) For example, hospitals objected to a Medicare patient death rate being known to women trying to choose a hospital for having a baby. Another objection was that a hospital's death rate might be because the patients are low income. Hospitals called 60 senators and more than 200 representatives and asked for the delay so the information can be reassembled.

We have ratings on CMS for various patient surveys, and those are of value. The higher the number of stars, the lower the death and readmission rates. We have a star rating system for nursing homes -- covering health inspections, staffing, quality measures and more. There's one for Home Health Compare that includes a patient survey rating. The new rating system for overall hospital quality was meant to make the information about hospitals easier to understand, with over 60 of the measurements being condensed into the star system, with ratings from one to five stars. Initially the CMS told Congress that the website would be running by July. Now they've backtracked and say it might be after July if they're still working on the data. If you want to view the other ratings, go online to cms. gov and put ratings in the search box.
READ THE LABEL! Acetaminophen, a commonly used over-the-counter pain reliever and fever reducer, has been shown in research trials to reduce the ability to spot errors. That can be serious, depending on what the user is doing while taking the drug. In double-blind clinical trials, those taking acetaminophen didn't notice any difference in their ability to see errors, but the test results told a different story: There really were slower reactions and mistakes. (The partici-
pants' task was to hit one of two buttons when certain letters appeared on a screen.) Acetaminophen is an active ingredient in hundreds of over-the-counter and prescription medicines. If you take a pain reliever, be sure to read the package label to see if it contains acetaminophen, especially if you have liver problems. In 2013, the Food and Drug Administration issued a warning about acetaminophen causing serious skin diseases, including rash and blisters. In 2015, the FDA amended the required warning on packages to expand on the possibility of liver damage. One consumer product that contains acetaminophen goes much farther in its label warning and says not to take it with other drugs, limit use of caffeine, avoid alcohol, and more. This should be a warning to all of us. Just because something is available over the counter doesn't mean it's safe in all situations. And even if we've taken a drug for a long time without harm, we need to start reading labels every time because the information in them might have changed. To keep up with new information from the FDA, have updates sent to you by email. Go online to fda.gov and put Get Email Updates in the search box. Arrange a cooking pot over the fire. A Dutch oven works best. Hold your hand about even with the side. Beginning at 550, count backward by 50 -- i.e., 550, 500, 450. past. He wouldn't be the first athlete to do so ... that's why they call old memories "glory days."
BLOOD AND GUTS Apparently it is now necessary to talk about Curt Schilling. Schilling, as most sports fans remember, was a brilliant pitcher. Without a doubt he belongs in the Major League Hall of Fame. Let me reiterate that: Without a doubt, a Hall of Fame pitcher. Schilling was certainly a guy you wanted on your team, certainly a guy you wanted to take the ball every four or five days. He was a power pitcher and he was a control pitcher, but more than anything he was a gamer. The game I most remember -- and to me, the second greatest exhibition of sport and athleticism -- was the time he had Red Sox doctors staple his foot tendon to the bone so he could beat the Yankees while proceeding to bleed all over the mound that once held Jack Chesbro, Red Ruffing, Whitey Ford, Ron Guidry and Mariano Rivera aloft. Along the way, he served to singlehandedly abolish the ludicrous notion of a "curse" suffered by the team. If memory serves, he actually told reporters before the game that "aura" and "mystique" were stripper names, and he didn't believe in that, or in a curse, because he was Christian.
It is very difficult to leave your mark on the world. Nobody knows the name of the architect of the pyramids, for instance, and very few people can name an accomplishment of a politician born just a few decades ago. Many people would be hard pressed to name the presidents carved into Mt. Rushmore, and it'd be otherworldly to find someone who knows who Mr. Rushmore was. We keep score by putting names on streets (how many people in Chicago know that Cermak was an assassinated mayor?), airports (LaGuardia? Also a mayor.) and currency. Really the only other place we revisit and venerate anybody outside of a church is in our sports cathedrals and record books. Curt Schilling was my favorite baseball analyst. Oftentimes he would predict the next pitch, and other times really get you into the mindset of a pitcher. That, however, wasn't enough for him. Somewhere along the way he decided to ridicule transgendered people, and he was fired for that. It doesn't take a brain surgeon to guess that transgendered people were not welcome in the bathrooms of his locker rooms growing up, and while I always espouse the concept of free speech, Schilling's case proves once again that free speech does in fact come with a cost. Schilling had guts when he played, he bled on the mound, but being a baseball analyst simply was not enough for him. Clearly, he was never ready for the bloodthirsty crowd that simply didn't want to hear what he was saying anymore. I hope he gets another shot, but I won't be surprised if he again shoots himself in the foot. For some people, it's never enough. Mark Vasto is a veteran sportswriter who lives in New Jersey.
But times have changed, and maybe we shouldn't be surprised that an athlete like Schilling seems mired in the

Danish Tax on Fatty Foods Improves Health
Red and Processed Meat Consumption Endangers Global Health Rising red and processed meat consumption around the world negatively impacts lower socioeconomic groups, according to a report published online in The Proceedings of the Nutrition Society. The report states that, while red and processed meat intake remains high in high-income countries, consumption of these meats is increasing in lower-income countries across Latin American, East Asia, and elsewhere. Those with higher income occupations tend to eat less red processed meats when compared to those in other economic groups, increasing the risk for low-income groups for noncommunicable diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, and obesity. The report recommends strategies to maintain traditional diets and shift away from red and processed meat consumption to prevent further environmental degradation and lower disease rates worldwide. Recently, the World Health Organization declared red and processed meats “carcinogenic to humans,” and observed an increased risk for pancreatic, stomach, and other cancers. Learn more about the dangers of processed meats at DropTheHotDog.org.
A Danish tax on foods high in saturated fat, including meat and dairy products, improved the nation’s health, according to research published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Researchers assessed the effects of the tax and the resulting dietary changes and compared the consumption of fats, salt, fiber, and fruits and vegetables with disease risk. Overall, the Danish people decreased their saturated fat consumption by 4 percent but increased their intake of vegetables and fiber by 7.9 percent and 3.7 percent, respectively. Researchers predict these changes could save up to 123 lives a year by reducing preventable deaths from chronic disease caused by lifestyle, including cardiovascular disease.
Weight Loss Prevents Cognitive Decline Weight loss helps prevent brain damage caused by type 2 diabetes, according to a study published online in Diabetes Care. Researchers followed 319 participants with type 2 diabetes and overweight or obesity from the Action for Health in Diabetes study. Some participants received an intervention, including nutrition education, while the control group received no intervention. All participants underwent brain imaging and cognitive tests. Intervention group participants reduced their weight by 12 percent and improved their cardiorespiratory fitness, the body’s ability to oxygenate the muscles, by 26 percent, while those in the control group lost 1 percent of their

Angle-closure glaucoma is caused by abnormal anatomy inside the eye, where the lens blocks the pupil, "closing" the channels that allow fluid to leave the eye. In acute closed-angle glaucoma, symptoms include headache, a "halo" around lights and severe eye pain. This is an emergency, since permanent vision changes may occur within hours to days, so the surgery is done immediately. Ophthalmologists can suspect the condition based on exam, and if confirmed, will recommend treatment to prevent this emergency. It sounds like that is what has happened in your case. I resist making a recommendation of laser versus non-laser surgery. In my mind, you trust your surgeon to use the right technique for you. However, in this case, laser is the standard treatment. I have read effectiveness rates of 60 percent to 95 percent. Complications are uncommon but can include inflammation and "ghost" images. Repeat surgery is occasionally needed. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. weight and improved their cardiorespiratory fitness by 7 percent. Those in the intervention group had a 28 percent lower volume of white matter hyperintensity, or damaged areas of the brain, when compared to those in the control group.
Grains Aid Weight Management Grains aid in weight maintenance, according to an abstract presented at this year’s American Society for Nutrition Scientific Sessions and Annual Meeting at Experimental Biology. Researchers compared diets that both included and excluded grains in adults and children from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Despite a higher reported caloric intake, those who consumed the most pasta, cereals, rice, and other grains weighed 7.2 pounds less and had a smaller waistline than those who did not consume grains. Rolls, tortillas, and other bread products contributed to daily intakes of fiber, folate, iron, zinc, and other nutrients, while salty snacks and crackers were associated with higher fruit intake and an overall better diet. dog in his area to help him. Good luck! -- D. Oswald, Palmyra, New York
Need Care at Home? LIC #30211621 LIC #30211641
DEAR D.: Fantastic idea! Therapy dogs are increasingly becoming an important part of our society and play an indispensable role in many people's lives. Typically, therapy dogs visit with people for a short time each day or week to help relieve stress, provide emotional support, ease loneliness or grief ... or help people overcome their fear of dogs.
OVERCOMING BOY'S FEAR OF DOGS DEAR PAW'S CORNER: I read your recent column about a young boy who was afraid of dogs, and I would like to suggest some help to him, or anyone who is fearful of an animal. My dog Hannah and I have worked with many children to help them get over their fears. Hannah is a therapy dog. She is awesome! The children (and some adults) she has worked with are now petting other dogs. We work through our local H.S.S. Lollypop Farm in New York. I'm sure this young man can find a great therapy

A great place to start learning more about therapy dogs is at the Pet Partners website, which gives information about the services that therapy dogs can provide, and can help match patients with dogs in their area.
ABSOLUTE LOVE
If you're a pet owner whose dog has a great disposition and is well-socialized, volunteering your pet to be a therapy dog could be very rewarding for both of you. GIANT RAINBOW ABCs. Spell out a name or word with supersize bubble letters. Fill in the loops and spaces with contrasting colors, then make it grow into a rainbow word. For example, if you write your word in orange chalk, fill in the spaces with yellow. Now go around the outside of each letter with a new color, such as red. Continue with blue and purple, or choose any color combination that inspires you.
SIDEWALK-CHALK FAIR
CHALK UP OUTDOOR PLAYTIME Chalk up some outdoor playtime with your kids with one of the simplest of art supplies, a bucket of chalk. Step out on a sidewalk or driveway, and discover all the possibilities of the impermanent canvas -- not only for artwork in cheery colors, but for games of hopscotch that attract friends for healthy competition and exercise. Here are more creative things your family and friends can do with standard sidewalk chalk:
SHADOW PORTRAITS On a sunny day, ask your child to stand still, and then outline his shadow with a piece of chalk. Ask him to do the same with your shadow. Fill in the outlines with comical expressions on your faces and dashing wardrobes, including silly shoes, a funny hat or a new hairdo.
License # 100053130
Sidewalk-chalk murals bring communities of all ages together with the challenge of adorning an outdoor concrete canvas. Try the idea on your own block when you have a get-together. Give participants their own reserved space to create a self-portrait, scenic design, cartoon, poem, maze, etc.
FIZZY SIDEWALK CHALK Stir up an easy recipe of a sidewalk chalk "paint" that fizzes when kids spray it with vinegar. In a bowl with a spout, stir together a box of baking soda, 1/2 cup cornstarch and about a cup of hot water. Pour into unbreakable containers or sections of a muffin container. Stir in different colors of food coloring in different bowls/ sections. Paint on the sidewalk with paintbrushes. Spritz the art with vinegar and watch it fizz.

The Humane Society of Broward County
Friday the 13th Could Be Your Lucky Day!! Superstition has it that 13 is an unlucky number -- and Friday the 13th even more so. This couldn't be further from the truth on the upcoming Friday, May 13, when the Humane Society of Broward County is offering up your Lucky Day! It’s “name your price” for felines over one year of age, dogs weighing over 40 pounds, and all rabbits and Guinea Pigs! How lucky can you get? Adult pets are often overlooked because people want the younger or smaller pets. But it's smart to take a bit of time to meet an adult. You'll see his or her already-formed wonderful personality, they're almost always already welltrained, and they somehow seem to realize that you've rescued them. They become very attached, almost as if they feel grateful to fabulous You. Whether you are looking for an active, outgoing feline, a couch potato dog, or
a cuddle bug to share your bed, you're sure to find your new best friend when you adopt a pet from the Humane Society of Broward County.
If this Lucky Day offer sounds too good to be true, it's not! All pets are spayed or neutered before going home and are micro-chipped. In addition, they receive preliminary vaccinations, a 10-day limited health care plan courtesy of VCA Animal Hospitals, cats are feline leukemia tested, dogs over 7 months are tested for heartworm, and cats receive a card board cat carrier to go home in and a bag of Purina ONE pet food. Adoptions fees are normally $30 for felines over 6 months, $50 for rabbits, $30 for Guinea pigs and $100 for dogs over 6 months, but you’ll get to name the price you want to pay on May 13th! This limited time offer is valid at the Humane Society of Broward County which is conveniEntly located at 2070 Griffin Road, just a block west of I-95. All pets must leave with
an appropriate collar. For more information visit www.humanebroward. com or call 954-989-3977 ext. 6.
