Father’s Day is Sunday, June 19th!

CEREAL by Janet Spencer There was a drought in Rome in 496 B.C. The priests thought if they started worshiping the Greek goddess Demeter, she might help. They changed her name to Ceres from the Latin ‘crescere’ meaning ‘to grow’ which is also the root of ‘create’ and ‘increase.’ She became the protector of crops, and the caretakers of her temple became the grain dealers. A new Latin word was coined meaning ‘of Ceres’-- cerealis, which became the word cereal. Come along with Tidbits as we eat cereal!

• It’s been estimated that more than 60% of the population of the world relies on a total of four crops, three of which are grains. Those four crops are rice, corn, soy, and wheat. • Oatmeal is richer in proteins than whole wheat. Samuel Johnson remarked in the dictionary he wrote that oats are "a grain which is generally given to horses but in Scotland supports the people." A Scotsman replied, "That is why in England you have such ďŹ ne horses and in Scotland we have such ďŹ ne men." • John Kellogg ran a health resort in Battle Creek, Michigan in the late 1800s. He advocated a healthy diet, and invented a aky breakfast cereal made from smashing boiled wheat and corn into thin at sheets and baking them. He had trouble perfecting the formula until one day when he was called away while the wheat was cooking. When he returned, the wheat was far overcooked, but money was tight and wheat was expensive so he ran the overcooked wheat through the rollers anyway. The thin crispy ake that resulted was the perfect formula. • At ďŹ rst he called this cereal Granula, which he later changed to Granola before ďŹ nally changing the name to Corn Flakes. The cereal was a novel invention and reputedly very healthy, but it didn't taste very good.

• John Kellogg had a younger brother named Will. Will Kellogg was more interested in making a proďŹ t than his brother was. When John left on an extended trip, Will did something that John had forbidden: he added a coating of sugar to the cereal. People liked John's unsweetened cereal a little, but they loved Will’s sugary cereal. When John returned, he was furious. Will ended up starting his own company, which he called Kellogg’s. Will Kellogg’s cereal eventually put John Kellogg’s cereal out of business. The brothers were rivals until their deaths. ‌turn the page for more

est sugar content were brands most heavily marketed to children during Saturday morning cartoons.

• A patient of John Kellogg named Charles W. Post started his own dry cereal company called Post Cereals, selling a rival brand of corn flakes. John Kellogg claimed that Charles Post stole the formula for corn flakes from the safe in his office.

• By 1977 a coalition of 12,000 health professionals asked the Federal Trade Commission to ban the advertising of sugary foods on children's TV shows. The petition was accompanied by a collection of 200 decayed teeth collected and donated by pediatric dentists. In 1979, the typical American child watched more than 20,000 commercials between the ages of two and 11, and more than half of those commercials were for cereals, candy, snacks, and soft drinks.

(continued):

• Charles Post came out with a cereal he called Elijah's Manna. He tried to export it to Britain but they refused to register it, feeling giving such a religious name to a food item was sacrilegious. Post changed the name to Post Toasties.

SUGARY CEREALS • In 1949 Post Cereal introduced a sugary line of cereals such as Sugar Crisps, Krinkles, and Corn-Fetti and the kids went wild. General Mills followed suit with cereals such as Trix, Sugar Frosted Flakes, and Cocoa Puffs. • In 1975, a dentist who was alarmed at the steep increase in the number of cavities he was seeing in children went to the supermarket and bought 78 different kinds of cereal. He took them to his lab and measured their sugar content. One-third had sugar levels between 10 and 25%. One-third contained between 26% and 50% sugar, and the rest of them had sugar levels even higher than 50%. The highest was Super Orange Crisps which was almost 71% sugar. Not surprisingly, those cereals with the high-

OAT MILL AND OAT MEAL • When Henry Parsons Crowell bought a small bankrupt oat mill for a few thousand dollars in the mid-1800s, he soon found that he had a major competitor whose name was Ferdinand Schumacher. Schumacher had a near monopoly on oats, having invented a better oat-milling device which allowed him to produce oats faster and cheaper than anyone else. He was ruthless in his business dealings and sent many other oat dealers out of business by undercutting their prices. • However, Crowell discovered that Schumacher sold oats only in 180-pound (82 kg) barrels, which were kept, usually without lids, in the back of stores. Crowell knew he couldn't out produce Schumacher, so he decided to compete with him by adding new features. • Crowell sold his oats in two pound (.9 kg) packages, advertising that his re-sealable cartons kept his oats free from dirt, disease, animals, and insects. Cooking instructions were printed on the package, as well as recipes. Crowell's oats became the first food product boasting a four-color printed carton, and it was the first product to offer sample miniatures. • Crowell’s was also the first business to add another new feature: premiums, in which boxtops could be redeemed for

• As a result, Kellogg's Sugar Frosted Flakes was re-named Frosted Flakes; Post changed Super Sugar Crisp into Super Golden Crisp; and Sugar Smacks became Honey Smacks. Although the names changed, the sugar content did not, and nothing changed about the fact that cereals were pitched to children on weekend daytime TV. The cereal industry uses 816 million pounds of sugar per year. • Grape Nuts is one of the few cereals with no added sugar. It has nothing to do with grapes or nuts, being made out of baked wheat and malted barley.

FAST FACTS ABOUT CEREAL • In 1964 both Kellogg's and Post introduced cereal that had freeze-dried fruit in it. The theory was that the freeze-dried fruit would absorb moisture from the milk and be reconstituted in the bowl. Unfortunately it took so long for the fruit to rehydrate that the cereal was hopelessly soggy by the time the fruit was edible.

dishes and kitchen items. Soon Crowell’s oat company was a food processing giant, and he eventually bought Schumacher out. By the time Crowell died in 1943, he was one of the wealthiest men in Chicago. • His company, whose name summons images of honesty and integrity, still sells oats in familiar round cartons. What’s the name of Crowell’s company, now one of the largest manufacturers of breakfast foods in the world with Headquarters in Cedar Rapids, Iowa?

• After winning the Olympic decathlon in 1976, Bruce Jenner was signed up to sell Wheaties. On the air, Jenner claimed he had eaten Wheaties all his life. The assistant district attorney in San Francisco brought suit against General Mills, claiming consumer fraud. They felt that Jenner hadn't really eaten Wheaties all his life. Jenner challenged the DA to ask his mother. The suit was dropped. • In ads, the Trix rabbit is always trying to sneak a bowl of Trix cereal, but the kids constantly take it away from him, saying "Trix is for kids!" During the 1976 presidential elections, General Mills worried that this might be teaching kids a bad thing: try as you might, you'll never reach your goal. So they put it to the vote. By sending in box-top ballots, kids were asked to vote on whether or not the rabbit would get his Trix. 99% voted yes. Amidst great fanfare, the rabbit got to eat a whole bowl on the next commercial. Then, like Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist, he held out his empty bowl and asked for more— only to be told he had to wait for the next election. • In 1972, General Mills introduced a new cereal called Franken Berry with pink cereal ‘berries’ in it. Unfortunately the food dye they initially used to turn the cereal pink was not absorbed by the digestive system, so parents were alarmed to find their kids having pink bowel movements, fearing internal bleeding. The formula was quickly changed and a different dye was used. • Cheerios were originally called Cheerioats. The name was changed in 1945.

worth about $40 for their value to collectors. • The promotional stunt was so successful that later Quaker offered one cubic inch of genuine Yukon dirt in each box of cereal.

OAT FACTS • About 95% of oats produced in the world are fed to livestock, with only about 5% of the world crop being consumed by humans.

THE GREAT LAND GIVE-AWAY • In 1955, Quaker Oats offered a special prize in every box of Quaker Puffed Rice and Puffed Wheat cereal. The cereal company sponsored a TV show called "Sergeant Preston of the Yukon" and the prize was a deed granting the holder ownership of one square inch of property on the Yukon River, 12 miles north of Dawson. Quaker had actually purchased a 19-acre tract and split it into 21 million sub-divisions of an inch each. • One man collected 10,000 of the deeds which he said entitled him to a 75-foot square plot, although the company pointed out that his one-inch deeds were not adjacent to each other. • The Canadian government eventually reclaimed the land for failure to pay $37 in back taxes. Today the deeds are

• 80% of American households have oatmeal in their pantries. • January is the top month for oatmeal sales. • For steel-cut oats, the grains are sliced thin by a set of steel blades, while old-fashioned oats are steamed and then rolled to produce a flattened shape. Steel-cut oats take longer to cook and may have a bit more fiber. The more the oats are flattened and steamed, the quicker they cook – and the softer they become. • Studies have shown that eating 3 grams of oat fiber per day (about the amount in a one-cup serving) can lower total cholesterol by 8% to 23%.

BIRD BRAINS • In the late 1980s, scientists in Florida scattered food pellets to attract fish to a specific spot in a bay. A great blue heron watched these proceedings and discovered that if it hung out nearby, it could feast on the fish that came up for the pellets. After several days, either the fish got wise or they had all been eaten because they stopped coming to eat the pellets. Scientists were astounded to see the heron pick up a pellet in its beak, take it a short distance down the shore, drop it in the water, and nab a fish that surfaced. • A man in Washington once tossed crackers to a raven until the raven was full and could eat no more. The raven wanted to take more crackers to its cache, but it could pick up only one cracker at a time in its beak. By the time it got back to collect the next cracker, other critters would have stolen the rest of the food. The man was astonished to see the raven solve the dilemma by tucking the crackers side by side into a snowbank one at a time. When several crackers were lined up together, the raven was able to pick them all up at one time and fly off with the entire batch. • Bill and Wilma Fisher raised birds and had about 30 parrots. Once when they were away from home at a parrot show, one of their parrots used his beak to undo the bolts that held his cage together. When the cage collapsed, the parrot escaped. He then managed to unlatch all the other cages one at a time. When the bird sitter arrived later that day, she discovered all the birds in the middle of a parrot party. • When a storm blew down the netting that enclosed the New York Zoological Society’s gigantic aviary in the 1960s, zookeepers captured as many of the remaining birds as they could, but left the netting open. Within the next few days, nearly 75% of the escaped birds returned home.

• King Henry VIII had a pet parrot that one day fell unnoticed into the Thames River. It was rescued only because it raucously squawked, "Boat! Boat!" • A parrot listed in the Guinness Book of World Records had a vocabulary of 531 words. He could recite eight nursery rhymes in a single breath without mistake.

CHICKADEE FACTS • Chickadees hide seeds in holes in trees where they will stay safe until retrieved and eaten. One researcher wanted to test the memory of chickadees, so he arranged a forest of artificial trees. Each tree had holes and each hole had a door which could either be open or closed. He gave his experimental chickadees some sunflower seeds to store when all the doors were opened. He watched where they stashed the seeds, then chased the birds away. He removed all the seeds, then closed every door— whether or not it had contained seeds. This way all the holes looked and smelled the same. Then he let the birds back in. The birds invariably searched the holes where they had stashed seeds 24 hours earlier. They tore the doors off searching for their seeds and ignored the holes where they had not placed seeds. • For his next experiment, he set out to see if they could remember the holes they had already visited. After storing the seeds, he chased the birds out of the aviary and didn't let them back in for 24 hours. He gave them enough time to visit half of the holes to retrieve their seeds, then chased them out again. 24 hours later he allowed them in a second time, this time with all the doors closed once again and all the remaining seeds removed. Still, the chickadees went back to each hole that had once contained seeds, but they didn't bother going back to the holes they had visited the previous day. It seems that the memory of a chickadee is very good indeed.

HOLLYWOOD -- Social media is changing the way younger generations are viewing television and movies, and traditional media is fighting back. Its weapons against pirate downloading and binge-watching on small screens are making films bigger and in 3D. Upcoming is the epic King Kong film "Skull Island," due March 10, and Warners already is prepping "Godzilla 2" for March 2019, and "Godzilla vs. Kong," coming May 2020. Television is transforming and diversifying itself as well. Just as reality shows changed the landscape of TV, so will some of the upcoming new series. Producer Ryan Murphy, already responsible for changing the landscape of TV with "Glee," "Nip/Tuck," "American Horror Story," "The New Normal," "Scream Queens" and "American Crime Story," is launching a new anthology series, "Feud," featuring famous Hollywood feuds between legendary actresses. The first to unfold will be the infamous feud between Bette Davis and Joan Crawford during their 1962 classic black-and-white film, "Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?" Oscar-winner Susan Sarandon will take on Bette Davis, while two-time Oscar-winner Jessica Lange will play Joan Crawford. "Baby Jane" was remade in color in 1991, with Lynn Redgrave in the Bette Davis role (as Baby Jane Hudson) and Vanessa Redgrave in the Joan Crawford role (as Blanche Hudson). On other networks, SYFY is producing a prequel that takes us back to "Krypton" to meet Superman's grandfather. Fox has "The Exorcist," starring Oscar-winner Geena Davis, and a series based on the Mel Gibson/Danny Glover franchise "Lethal Weapon," with Damon Wayans Sr., Jordana Brewster and Kevin Rahm (late of "Madam Secretary"). *** After 13 seasons and 306 episodes, Michael Weatherly has quit "NCIS," saying, "I felt I'd stayed at the party too long.

I realized I had other things I should be doing. I directed a documentary. I have a production company, and I wanted to spend more time with my family." Weatherly remarried in 2009 and has a daughter and a son. *** Speaking of quitting, George Clooney's last acting job may be "Money Monster." Clooney, who turned 55 on May 6, said, "I think nobody wants to see anybody really age (on camera). It's a very unforgiving thing; aging becomes something you try to do less and less on screen. You can't stay in front of the cameras your whole life!

James Stewart made his last film, "The Magic of Lassie," when he was 70. Morgan Freeman is still going strong at 78, and Harrison Ford at 73 is the top-grossing actor of all time. *** Q: Last summer I was really into David Duchovny's new series, "Aquarius." Please tell me it will be back again this summer. -Tia J., via email

Q: I was pleasantly surprised to find that I love Andrew Dice Clay's new comedy on Showtime called "Dice." I especially thought that the actor who played Natasha's brother's husband was wonderful. Can you tell me what else I can see him in? -- Tina H., Mount Dora, Florida A: Actor and stand-up comedian Eugene Kim played David on "Dice," a thrilling experience for him because he got to meet and work with Andrew. Eugene told me: "I love Andrew Dice Clay. He's one of those iconic comedians that you look up to and hope to meet. I had seen him at the Comedy Store, and he just brings this power when he walks in. He just has that star quality and charisma. "As an actor, he's extremely nurturing. That is something I appreciate as an artist because you want to feel safe in your environment. And somebody who is a legend like Andrew, he could have easily been a jerk, but he was a really great person to work with." Eugene's next project is the feature film "Car Dogs," which also stars Octavia Spencer, Josh Hopkins, George Lopez and Nia Vardalos. Eugene revealed: "It's an indie film, and the plot happens over the course of one day. The main character, Mark Chamberlain -- who is played by Patrick Adams, who is in 'Suits' -- has a quota of 35 cars to sell by the end of the day. And he needs us, his car salesmen, to help him meet that quota. The question is will he do whatever it takes to make that happen, as far as ethics go."

A: David will return to the role of LAPD detective Sam Hoidak, who is hot on the trail of a missing girl who has taken up with Charles Eugene Kim Manson and his "family." As you know, the series is set in the late 1960s, with the action taking place before the infamous Tate-LaBianca murders. The 13-episode second season returns to NBC on Thursday, June 16. Veteran actor Tim Griffin joins the series as Agent Ron Kellaher, a foil for Hoidak and hell-bent on getting him kicked off the force. *** Readers: It's time for another episode of "Canceled or Renewed." This time I will focus on CBS shows that have gotten the ax, whether they've run their course or were canceled due to low ratings. Shows we won't be seeing this upcoming season include: "Angel From Hell," "CSI: Cyber," "Extant," "The Good Wife," "Mike and Molly," "Person of Interest" and "Rush Hour." Also, you won't be seeing "Supergirl" on CBS after this season, but it hasn't been canceled; it's switching over to The CW, where it will be right at home with all the other superhero series. by Samantha Weaver * It was early 20th-century Irish author Robert Wilson Lynd who made the following sage observation: "The belief in the possibility of a short decisive war appears to be one of the most ancient and dangerous of human illusions."

* In 1980, 16 Danish seamen issued a Mayday call and abandoned their sinking ship, leaping into the frigid waters of the North Sea. Despite the fact that the water of the North Sea is so cold that it can kill a person in half an hour, all 16 sailors, who all were wearing life jackets, survived three times that long, and all were alive when rescuers arrived 90 minutes later. The sailors were immediately taken below decks on the rescue ship, wrapped in blankets and given warm drinks. Seems like a happy ending, doesn't it? Nope. After reaching supposed safety, all 16 of the rescued sailors suddenly dropped dead. * The word "infant" is derived from the Latin word "infans," which means "unable to speak." * It was beloved English author and humorist P.G. Wodehouse, probably best known for his tales of Wooster and Jeeves, who made the following observation: "Judges, as a class, display, in the matter of arranging [divorce settlements] that reckless generosity which is found only in men who are giving away someone else's money." * Brides in ancient Rome carried sheaves of wheat, not bouquets of flowers. * Andrew Jackson, the seventh president of the United States, had a pet parrot with a questionable vocabulary. In fact, Poll (the pet in question) was so foul-mouthed (-beaked?) that it disrupted Jackson's funeral. According to Rev. William Menefee Norment, who presided at the service, "Before the sermon and while the crowd was gathering, a wicked parrot that was a household pet got excited and commenced swearing so loud and long as to disturb the people and had to be carried from the house." * The reasons why aren't clearly understood, but it seems that people with high blood pressure rarely get cancer. * Glass-bottom beer tankards were invented during medieval times. Evidently, some taverns were so rough that

patrons felt the need to be able to see the other drinkers even when turning the mug bottoms-up. * Those who study such things say that when you're sleeping, a quarter of all your blood is in your liver. * It's pretty common knowledge that it's the male seahorse, not the female, that gives birth to the young. Not many people realize, though, that a male seahorse can deliver a brood of a thousand or more babies in the morning, and then be pregnant again that night. *** Thought for the Day: "I get up every morning determined to both change the world and have one hell of a good time. Sometimes this makes planning my day difficult." -- E.B. White (c) 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services has added six more quality measurements to their online Nursing Home Compare program. The current online program lets consumers investigate and rank nursing homes in areas such as quality of care outcomes, staff, health inspections and more, using information that comes from the nursing homes and patients. The six new quality measures will not be self-reported by the nursing homes, but come from Medicare claims from hospitals. Here are the six measures:

satisfy their need for longer-term trials with every parameter and detail to their liking.

The information has been gathered and will appear on the Nursing Home Compare website, but it will be a few months before it is translated into star ratings.

Meanwhile, unless we get the all-clear from our doctor to take a vitamin B-12 tablet every day, there are a few additions to our diet that might help, if the study results are true. Sardines and beef liver have more than enough B-12. Even milk and salmon have enough for the daily requirement, as do Swiss cheese and eggs.

To use the Nursing Home Compare website, go online to Medicare.gov and put Nursing Home Compare in the search box. Put your city and state in the location box, or your ZIP code, and click Search. To look at a particular nursing facility, put that name in the search box.

HELP FOR AGING BRAINS? The results of a long-term Swedish study suggest that help for our aging brains might be as close as the vitamin aisle in the drugstore. Vitamin B-12 was shown to slow the rate of brain aging ... probably. Homocysteine, a non-protein amino acid, is the culprit in increasing the rate of brain aging, and vitamin B-12 slows that rate. Between 2001 and 2009, some 500 participants over age 60 were examined and assessed, including medical history, cognitive function and B-12 levels. Brain volume was measured during the study. Higher levels of B-12 seemed to help lower the rate of homocystein.

Short-stay patients (less than 100 days in the facility): 1) Patients who were discharged to the community. 2) Patients who visited the emergency room. 3) Patients who were readmitted to the hospital after being in the nursing home. 4) Patients who had improvements in function. Long-stay patients (more than 100 days in the facility): 5) Patients who had worsening ability to move independently. 6) Patients who were given anti-anxiety medication. The CMS program, started in 1998, has progressed and grown over the years, including the addition of sanctions against nursing homes, inspection reports and ownership of the facilities. In 2008, it compiled the information into star ratings to make comparisons easier.

Not all researchers are sold on the conclusions, however. Maybe it's another lifestyle health factor that's involved. They do think that trials are warranted, with more indepth looks at the levels of homocysteine and B-12. At the same time, they point to a previous study with basically the same results, this time with participants over age 70 who already had mild cognitive impairment and received a few vitamins, not just B-12. There was less brain volume loss in those who took the vitamins. In yet another study, B-12 deficiency was associated with cognitive ability difficulty on tests. So where does that leave us? Still unsure about the actual mechanism of vitamin B-12 as it pertains to counteracting loss of brain volume, at least until researchers

Please Support Our Advertisers time-saving meal plan for summer ... or all year-round 1) Enlist your children to help plan the meals they'd like to eat. You can plan meals based on three- or six-month lists; Spring/Summer and Fall/Winter. Planning ahead will save you time and money that you can use for a fabulous family vacation!

A PERFECT SOLUTION FOR PICKY EATERS Mealtimes are an opportunity to share time together as a family. If your dinner table has become a struggle between you and your picky children, help is at hand. Mealtimes can quickly become battlegrounds when parents insist that children clean their plates or eat all of their vegetables. Eating is one of the few areas where young children feel they have control, and their budding independence can easily lead to unpleasant power struggles. The best thing a parent can do is to provide a healthy, nutritious meal, but go with the flow and relax at mealtime. The time shared together is more important than engaging in a power struggle to make the kids finish every last veggie. Here are some questions about common picky eater problems and answers to alleviate mealtime predicaments. Q: One day my son is constantly hungry. The next he may hardly touch his food. Then he gets on food jags and wants to eat only cereal for several days. Should I be concerned? A: Children's appetites can vary from day to day, and children often eat in spurts. While some children may be able to eat regular meals, others may need a series of small meals through the day. Give children credit that they will eat when they are hungry. It's also not uncommon for children to get on food jags and want to eat the same thing meal after meal. The important thing is to learn your child's individual needs and preferences and not overreact when he won't eat or wants cereal three meals in a row. As long as your child is growing and healthy, he is probably doing fine. If you have concerns about your child's growth rate or health, see your pediatrician. Q: My 4-year-old twins are so picky about what they will eat that I worry they're not getting a balanced diet. What can I do? A: There are many ways you can add variety and make foods fun. Here are some suggestions: --Make smiley faces on foods. --Cut sandwiches into shapes with cookie cutters. --Make juice-sicles by freezing juice using popsicle sticks. --Give children choices: "Would you prefer carrot or apple slices?" --Involve children in shopping for food and planning, preparing and serving meals. Children may be more willing to eat meals that they have helped select and prepare.

1/2 cup prepared mild to medium salsa 1 tablespoon chili powder 1/2 cup shredded coleslaw 1/2 cup shredded cheese or shredded vegan cheese 1. Wrap the tortillas in a damp, food-safe paper towel. Microwave on HIGH for 10-15 seconds until the tortillas are hot.

2) Make a list of menu items based on breakfast, lunch, snacks, dinner and dessert categories. Select at least seven dishes for each category, and rotate them at least twice to ensure plenty of variety.

2. Meanwhile, in a small bowl, mix together the beans, 1/4 cup of the salsa and the chili powder. Microwave on High until the beans are hot, about 45 seconds.

3) Choose some easy recipes that can be made at least 30 minutes ahead of time and/or ones that can be doubled and frozen.

3. Spread beans on tortillas. Top with coleslaw, the remaining salsa and the cheese. Fold the tortillas in half. Makes 4 servings.

4) Set a budget and stick to it. Shop for your ingredients based on what's already in your pantry, fridge and freezer; what's in season; weekly sales and farmer's market finds. The freezer is your friend, especially when it comes to bargain buys on seasonal fruits and vegetables.

BLUEBERRY WATERMELON FREEZER POPS

5) Let your child be the "assistant chef" for their favorite meals, and encourage them to help you with the planning and preparation. You're not only making a great meal, you're making precious memories.

3 3/4 cups chopped seedless watermelon

You'll need 10 (3 ounce or similar-size) freezer-pop molds to make these pops. You can prepare them ahead of time and freeze for up to 3 weeks.

2 tablespoons lime juice 1 to 2 tablespoons sugar or stevia

Here are some delicious kid-friendly recipes that are perfect for summer meals!

BANANA BREAKFAST BAGELS

1 cup fresh blueberries 1. Puree watermelon, lime juice and sugar to taste in a food processor or blender until smooth.

2 tablespoons natural nut butter, such as almond, cashew or peanut 1 teaspoon honey 1 teaspoon vanilla 1 teaspoon cinnamon 1/8 teaspoon salt 1 whole-wheat bagel, split and toasted 1 small banana, sliced 1/4 cup sliced almonds Stir together nut butter, honey, vanilla, cinnamon and salt in a small bowl. Divide the mixture between bagel halves and top with banana slices and a sprinkle of almonds. Makes 2 servings.

MEXI-MELT WRAPS 8 large whole-wheat tortillas 1 (8-ounce) can nonfat refried beans

2. Divide blueberries among freezer-pop molds. Top with watermelon mixture. Insert sticks and freeze until completely firm, about 6 hours. Dip the molds briefly in hot water before unmolding. Makes about 10 (3-ounce) freezer pops *** Angela Shelf Medearis is an award-winning children's author, culinary historian and the author of seven cookbooks. FORECLOSURE DO’S AND DON’TS by Joann Hennessey

When in Foreclosure, consider the following DO’s and DON’Ts in protecting your rights and fighting the banks in this crisis:

DID YOUR MORTGAGE PAYMENTS BECOME UNMANAGEABLE? DOES YOUR DEBT SEEM OVERWHELMING AND COMPLEX?

DO – Hire an attorney based on knowledge, experience, and esprit de corps. “The Fight” is about obtaining the evidence, seeking depositions and other discovery material to refute the Bank’s evidence. Never give up without taking action and negotiating what you can on your terms.

Relax! You have options that may either stop the foreclosure, reduce the amount that you owe or waive portions of your debt.

DON’T – Hire an attorney because the Attorney is cheaper than every other foreclosure defense attorney.

Our Attorneys can guide you through the litigation process and take advantage of these alternative resolutions.

This is your home you are talking about. Most Attorneys who practice in this area are not expensive. They are cheaper than the average rent and certainly cheaper than your mortgage payment.

FREE CONSULTATION 305-639-5195

DON’T – Hire an attorney who saddles you with another mortgage in exchange for attorney fees. In my opinion this is a conflict of interest. If you decide to go this route understand the consequences and the commitment.

At Civil Justice Advocates our primary focus is YOU! t Foreclosure Defense t Debt Settlement t Bankruptcy t Short Sales t Asset Protection t Loan Modifications t Real Estate t Transactions & Contracts t Landlord/Tenant t Civil Litigation t Immigration t Family: Surrogacy, Adoptions & Divorces t FDCPA & TCPA: Defend against abusive collection practices & robocallst Wills, Trusts & Probate

DON’T – Trust anything the Servicer/Lender is telling you when you call after being served a complaint. The Bank will not delay the foreclosure lawsuit while considering you for a loan modification. The Bank’s game is to keep you from defending the foreclosure until the Court orders your house sold. Don’t ignore the law suit.

We speak Spanish, Creole, Hindi & Gujarati Joann Hennessey, Esq.

DO – Answer the complaint. At the very least put a letter into the court within 20 days of being served the complaint asking for an extension of time to seek an attorney. This prevents a default from being entered against you without a hearing. DON’T – Think that talking to the Lender is the same as answering the Complaint. It is not. DO – Keep a detailed journal or log of your calls to the Lender/servicer: date, time, name, and substance of the call. Keep all letters, emails, and documents sent to you from the Bank/ Lender. Send all correspondence to the Bank via certified mail or federal express so that you have a record of the bank receiving the correspondence. DON’T – Believe that there are principal reductions out there. There are no significant principal reductions presently being offered by any Banks. However, this is litigation — one never knows what may be found during the course of litigation that could change the Bank’s mind or possibly get the bank to negotiate a principal reduction. By fighting the Banks, options may become available to you that would never have been available if you just walk away. Walking away should be your very last option. DON’T – Believe you will win your house for free. There are no free homes. Yes, there are incidents of people who have had their cases dismissed or who have received a satisfaction of their mortgage for technical legal reasons. These are very rare. Fighting the litigation is the only way you will get positive results either by negotiating a modification that you can live with or walking away with the least amount of damage. In other words, just because you won’t win a mortgage free house does not mean that you will lose your house altogether. There are options. Find out your options by seeking a consultation from a good foreclosure defense attorney. DON’T – Believe that a HAMP modification is a guaranteed permanent loan modification. Truth is the Bank sold your loan to a Wall Street Trust, which often will not allow for a permanent modification — even if you do qualify. Fortunately the Courts have started to catch on to this game of making people pay three months on a modification and then denying them the permanent modification. If you have been paying on a loan modification for over four months, the Bank may have consented to a permanent loan modification by its actions. Seek consultation. DO – Write in the memo area of every check you send to the bank/servicer what the check is for, the loan number, is it for principal and interest or “principal, interest, taxes and insurance.” Do the same with money orders. If you are in a loan modification, send the check or money order by certified mail so you can track the receipt of the check. DON’T – Think that Bankruptcy will solve your foreclosure litigation. Bankruptcy is a tool to be used at the appropriate

time in some cases. Filing Bankruptcy at the beginning of the case can provide an opportunity to get a loan modification in the bankruptcy court without the enormous arrears defeating the Chapter 13 plan. DON’T – Be fooled by thinking the truth, along with your overwhelming and irrefutable evidence will be enough to beat them. You need massive amounts of overkill. Understand that t hi s i s an extremely complex and profitable scam which is why the Bankers will never admit wrongdoing. Good Foreclosure Defense Attorneys along with Homeowners who won’t give up are necessary in exposing and defeating a scheme that seeks to make our children homeless and take away our due process and civil rights.

WHAT IS FORECLOSURE DEFENSE? Foreclosure defense is not just about “where’s the Note?” It is about identifying fraudulent documents, challenging the authority and authenticity of those individuals who sign on the endorsements, assignments of mortgages, and affidavits as well as seeking and identifying documents that contradict the Plaintiff’s claims of ownership. Foreclosure Defense is also about challenging the legitimacy of Mortgage Electronic Registration Systems’ (MERS) assignments of mortgage which often involves a dead mortgage company or the authority employees of a third party company, unrelated to the Lender/Bank, have when signing as an assistant secretary or vice president or attorney-in-fact for the Plaintiff or dead mortgage company without actually being an employee for the Plaintiff Bank/Lender or dead mortgage company. Depositions will be of prime importance in the coming year as will be expert affidavits and securitization audits. Foreclosure Defense Attorneys must challenge old thoughts and passe’ legal theories in this new era of securitization, electronic notes, destroyed notes, allonges not attached to Notes, predatory lending, violations of State recording laws, and fraudulently created documents. Just to mention a few. Borrowers too must challenge a court system that believes that the quicker families vacate their homes the quicker the Florida economy will recover. How homeless families are good for the economy is a mystery but that is the prevailing view. In the depression, the Courts sought methods of keeping families in their home. Today it is the opposite. Now neighborhoods are littered with vacant homes, empty condominiums and devastation. This is complicated law and complicated times. You must fight. You have options and you have rights under the Constitution. You have nothing to lose if you fight. You will get nothing if you don’t fight.

Always keep in mind that your case is also a plea for higher ethical and judicial standards and carries with it a message that the people of the United States will not be intimidated by corrupt banking institutions, manipulative politicians and bankers or a corrupt judiciary that seeks to deprive the people of all property without due process of law until our children wake-up homeless.

WHAT IS THE GOAL? Every individual or family has different goals arising from different situations. Most attorneys will give you a free consultation. In that free consultation the attorney should explain the legal system, explore your options, answer your questions and provide you with a direction.

stead of all-world superstar running back Herschel Walker ... a guy who Trump paid so much to sign he basically bankrupted the league (shocker, I know ... Trump and a bankruptcy). Rex's anecdotal punch line has the phone ringing on the Generals' sideline for the head coach. Trump is on the line, calling from his luxurious owner's suite. "The next time you give the ball to Maurice Carthon instead of Hershel Walker, you're fired."

REX RYAN IS A WEIRD GUY For those of you unaware, Ryan is the head coach of the Buffalo Bills and a serial bigmouth. He was the head coach for the Jets, took them to a couple of AFC championship games, but failed to take them to the Super Bowl. One may blame their quarterback, Mark Sanchez, for these failures, but then how would you describe Ryan's tattoo featuring his foot-model wife and Sanchez's jersey? Not that there's anything wrong with that ... you gotta admit it's kind of weird, right? We all make mistakes, but Ryan's bad decisions are cataclysmic at times. Who gets the blame for choosing, with the first pick in the draft, Shaq Lawson, a guy who won't play so much as a snap either in practice or during the season due to knee surgery? Ryan can be quite the joker. Recently he endorsed Donald Trump at a Buffalo rally. To his credit, he shared a great story about The Donald's football histrionics during his ill-fated ownership of the USFL's New Jersey Generals. Given the fact that Trump seriously considered buying the Bills a few years ago, the story actually went over quite well (as if Trumpsters would hear it any other way). For those who missed it, Ryan sets up the story by recounting a tale from one of his coaches, who also was a coach for the Generals. The Generals were on the one-yard line and they opted to give the ball to fullback Maurice Carthon in-

Trump got on stage and promptly congratulated Ryan for winning two championships for the Jets that never occurred. A few weeks later, Trump told a Pittsburgh crowd that he wanted to bring Joe Paterno back. From where, we are not quite certain, since the man is dead and most people in Pittsburgh view Penn State in much the same way a Sacramento Kings fan roots for the New York Islanders. Ryan apparently picked up another thing from Trump: animosity towards the press. At this year's first optional practices (attended by fans and the press), Ryan mandated that the press could not talk, write or tweet about anything they saw at the practices. As if he's got some grand plan he's trying to hide. This from a guy who all but begged HBO to document the Jets' every move like a shark for two straight seasons. Ryan, who like Trump, got his start in the business through a more successful father's contacts, is kind of reminiscent of Bill Parcells, who has won championships, in looks only. Too bad he forgot what Parcells once intimated to then-Giants fullback Maurice Carthon: "I don't care what anybody tells you, smash-mouth football wins games." Parcells was the kind of guy who would fax his playbook to the other sideline and dare you to stop him. Rex Ryan? He just needs to stop. Mark Vasto is a veteran sportswriter who lives in New Jersey. ANSWER: It is certainly reasonable to expect that your doctor's office be kept clean, and you have every right to ask your doctor to wash his or her hands before an exam, if you haven't seen him or her washing hands in front of you. I don't blame you for being uncomfortable about seeing the defensive doctor -- infection control is part of our business. However, it is impossible (and unnecessary) to keep the surfaces truly sterile, since diseases that are transmitted in the doctor's office most often come from hands, or occasionally are airborne, such as during flu season (which is why you may be asked to wear a mask if you have a cough or sneeze). One exception is C. diff, which is why it is such a problem in hospitals. Washing your own hands is a good idea when leaving the physician's office, but you don't want to go overboard worrying about acquiring diseases in the doctor's office.

HUSBAND FEARS GERMS IN DOCTOR'S OFFICES DEAR DR. ROACH: Our issue is with doctor's offices and germs. My husband won't see a doctor because he says they are some of the "germiest" places around. After his last visit to the dermatologist, he said he wouldn't go back because the doctor didn't wash his hands or change gloves before examining him. I asked a doctor once to wash his hands, and he got very defensive, to the point of being rude, and I didn't feel comfortable seeing him again. Also, what about skin diseases, such as rosacea, lupus, etc.? Can these be transferred via stethoscopes, equipment or incidental contact? What can I do to reassure my husband that he won't get a disease at the doctor's office? -- R.

*** DEAR DR. ROACH: I was prescribed Lamisil (terbinafine 250 mg). I developed diarrhea after 44 pills. My doctor told me to stop taking the pills. The diarrhea has continued, and it still hasn't stopped to this day. I tried overthe-counter treatments, which did not help. I read on the Internet that this is a common side effect. I'm concerned and don't know what to do to get relief. Do you have any suggestions? -- E.B.

• Ask for it! Even restaurants that don’t offer vegetarian entrées can usually whip up a meatless pasta or vegetable plate if you ask. If attending a catered affair, catch the waiter before you are served and ask him or her to remove the chicken breast from your plate and slip on

Oral terbinafine rarely causes serious liver damage. Although it's not life-threatening, it can cause taste disturbances, which can become permanent. I recommend thinking twice before taking oral terbinafine. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. • Order your next pizza without cheese but with a mountain of vegetable toppings.

• Convenience foods cut cooking time. Supermarkets and natural foods stores stock a huge array of instant soups and main-dish vegetarian convenience items. Many canned soups, such as minestrone, black bean, or vegetable, are vegetarian. Flavored rice or other grain mixes, like curried rice or tabouli salad, can be stretched into an entrée with a can of beans. Visit the frozen food section for internationally inspired vegetarian frozen entrées such as corn and bean enchiladas, lentil curry, or vegetarian pad thai. Or try vegetarian baked beans, refried beans, sloppy joe sauce, and meatless spaghetti sauce from the canned goods aisle.

General advice for acute diarrhea (that is, lasting less than two weeks) includes drinking plenty of fluids with some salt and sugar, not eating at all for the first 24 hours and then only modest amounts of bland foods, such as rice, potatoes, bananas and crackers. The over-the-counter drug loperamide usually is safe. If you are having more than six bowel movements a day on this regimen after two days, it's time to call your doctor again.

Rosacea and lupus are not spread by skin-to-skin contact.

an extra baked potato. Some airlines offer vegetarian meals if you ask in advance; or you can always bring a meal on board with you.

SWITCHING TO A VEGETARIAN DIET

ANSWER: I also have read in online forums about diarrhea lasting for months after oral terbinafine, a powerful antifungal agent that can be used as a cream. However, the published reports state that the diarrhea, which isn't uncommon, usually goes away by itself pretty quickly.

• International restaurants are the best bets for finding vegetarian food when dining out. Italian, Chinese, Mexican, Spanish, Thai, Japanese, and Indian restaurants all offer a wide variety of vegetarian dishes. • Texturized vegetable protein (TVP) is fat-free, has a texture like ground beef, and is wonderful in tacos, chili, and sloppy joes. Look for it in the bulk food section of the grocery store. • Summer barbecues are healthy and fun with meatless hot dogs and burgers. Or, for a real change of pace, grill thick slices of marinated vegetables like eggplant, zucchini, or tomatoes. • The simplest dishes are often the most satisfying. Brown rice, gently seasoned with herbs and lemon and sprinkled with chopped nuts or sunflower seeds, is a perfect dish.

• When traveling, pack plenty of vegetarian snacks like instant soups, fresh fruit, raw vegetables, trail mix, granola bars, and homemade oatmeal cookies. Fill a cooler with sandwiches and individual containers of juice and soymilk.

Sample Menus Breakfast 3 oatmeal pancakes with applesauce topping, calcium-fortified orange juice, fresh fruit Lunch Black bean burritos Dinner Chinese stir-fry over brown rice: tofu chunks, broccoli, pea pods, water chestnuts, and Chinese cabbage (bok choy), cantaloupe chunks drizzled with fresh lime juice Snack Dried figs Breakfast 1 cup oatmeal with cinnamon and raisins, 1/2 cup fortified soymilk, 1 slice toast with 1 tablespoon almond butter, 1/2 grapefruit Lunch Whole wheat pita stuffed with hummus, sliced tomatoes, and lettuce, carrot sticks Dinner 1 cup baked beans, baked sweet potato, 1 cup steamed collard greens drizzled with lemon juice, baked apple Snack Banana soymilk shake

DEAR ED: Many thanks for the tips! It's definitely important to do your homework and learn as much as you can before submitting your dog and yourself as a therapy dog and handler. Different facilities may need additional clearances -- not just a certification from a therapy-dog organization, but health checks for the owner/ handler and background checks.

MORE RESOURCES FOR THERAPY DOGS DEAR PAW'S CORNER: I read your column about the owner whose therapy dog helps children with a fear of dogs. I also have a Golden Retriever therapy dog, and we have had many success stories. Please tell your readers that organizations have different requirements for therapy dogs to visit their facilities, as well as for the handlers. For example, the hospitals we visit have additional health screening requirements for the handler. If they're looking for a good certification for their dog, Therapy Dogs International is a highly accepted certification. -- Ed A., Indiana

Therapy Dogs International has details on its website about its requirements for therapy dogs, and guidelines and testing information that will give owners a good idea of what they need to do to get their dog ready. For example, dogs have to be at least 1 year old. They don't have to take any specific therapy-dog classes, but they should have at the very least basic to intermediate obedience skills, a good temperament and up-to-date vaccinations and health records.

"Isla was delighted when these first 'flowers' appeared all over the neighborhood," said her mom, Liv Guillaume. "They spark her interest in nature and her creativity." Like Isla, here are some fun ways to enjoy these die-hard flowers with children:

Make a Dandelion Necklace Pick a small basketful of the long-stemmed flowers. The stems should be equal in length. Slit a hole in one stem with your fingernail or a butter knife. Then slip a second stem through it.

Flower-Head Wreath

Warm weather brings families outdoors to enjoy spring pleasures and chores. If you have a yard to tend, tackling the weeds is probably an ongoing item on your "things to do" list. Recently, while working in our garden, I groaned as I looked at our yard full of dandelions popping up. But when my 3-year-old neighbor Isla happily presented me with a freshly picked bouquet of dandelions, I was reminded that when an adult sees weeds, a child instead sees a field of golden flowers.

Owners also need to be aware that therapy dogs are not service dogs -- that is a different testing and certification process with different, often more stringent, requirements.

Make a slit in the second stem and continue the chain until it is as long as you want. Attach the last stem to the stem of the first dandelion with a small piece of string or wire. If daisies are growing in your garden or patio, add them to the chain, too. Wear it around your neck, or place it on your head.

For a traditional head wreath, wrap sturdy florist wire in a circle shape to fit your head. Attach one small bunch of flowers, with stems, to the topside of the ring shape, and secure with thin florist wire. Add and secure another bunch by wrapping wire around and around. Continue until the shape is covered. Knot colorful dangling ribbons to the back center, if you wish.

Make a Wish An old superstition says that if you make a wish on a dandelion gone to seed, and you are able to blow off all the seeds in one puff, your wish comes true. You might wish for a weed-free garden next year!

Preschoolers will marvel at the "magic" created when water and dandelion stems come together. Using just the tubular stems, split both ends of the stems apart about 1/2 inch with your fingernail and drop them into a bowl of water. Encourage kids to keep watch as the ends curl before their eyes.
