• One of the town founders, an American physician named Dr. William Beanes, was so angry at this drunken display that he arrested the rowdy Redcoats and hauled them to the local jail. However, one of them escaped, ran for help, and came back fortified by more redcoats. They released the imprisoned soldiers and seized Dr. Beanes. • They rowed him out to a frigate in the middle of Chesapeake Bay and held him prisoner. Dr. Beanes had a friend named Francis Scott K ey who was a lawyer . Urged by President James Madison, on Sept. 13, 1814, Francis Scott Key rowed out to the ship to negotiate Dr. Beanes’ release.

• Francis Scott K ey carried with him many letters written by British sailors whose lives had been saved by Dr . Beanes. The British subsequently agreed to release him. • H owever, shortly after Francis Scott K ey was taken aboard, the British began bombing Fort McHenry in Baltimore. Francis Scott Key and Dr. Beanes were held until the battle was over , lest they reveal the location of the British ships to their American friends. • Fearing for the safety of American forces, Francis Scott Key was moved to write a poem called “ The Defence of Fort M’Henry” which was set to the tune of an old English drinking song called “ To Anacreon in H eaven.” He scrawled the lyrics on the back of a letter.

umn pointed out that “Believe it or not, the U .S. has no designated national anthem!” This sparked a push to rectify this problem, led by the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, until it was named the national anthem in 1931.

FACTS ABOUT FRANCIS

(continued):

• When he returned home, he had the song printed up on flyers that he distributed to his friends who had been under attack at Fort McHenry. Two copies of this original printing still survive today. • The song became popular very quickly . The newspaper in Baltimore printed the lyrics. The proprietor of a music shop printed the sheet music, and he was the first person to call the song “ The Star Spangled Banner ” rather than “The Defence of Fort M’Henry.” • During the Civil War, the song became an anthem for Union troops and it steadily increased in popularity through the years. In 1916, President W oodrow Wilson signed an executive order stating that the song should be played at all military ceremonies. • In 1929, the “Ripley ’s Believe It Or Not” newspaper col-

• Francis Scott K ey was a very influential lawyer . H e served as an advisor in President Andrew J ackson’s cabinet, was appointed United States Attorney for the District of Columbia, and argued over 100 cases in front of the Supreme Court. Although he was an avid poet, the lyrics to the national anthem are the only rhymes he ’s remembered for.

FACTS ABOUT THE FLAG • The construction of the flag that flew over F ort McHenry was commissioned by Major George Armistead when he arrived in Baltimore to take command of Fort McHenry. • A woman named Mary Pickersgill who sewed the flag for Fort McHenry, spreading it out on the floor of a brewery because that was the only place big enough to unfurl it. struct it. She billed the government $490 for the work, which is equal to about $5,500 in today’s money. • The flag that so proudly waved was gigantic, measuring 30 feet by 42 feet (9 m x 13 m). That’s equal to one-quarter the size of a basketball court. The stars were two feet in diameter (0.6 m) and each stripe was 2 feet wide. It required a team of eleven men to raise it on a 90 foot (27 m) flagpole. It was designed to be highly visible. • The weather was stormy while the Battle of Baltimore was raging. The woolen flag would have weighed more than 500 lbs (227 kg) when water-logged, so it was taken down and replaced with a smaller “ storm flag.” When the rain cleared, the storm flag was taken down and the big flag was hoisted once again. This is the flag Francis Scott Key would have seen from the ship when dawn broke, not knowing that a substitute stand-in flag actually flew during the ‘perilous night. • As years passed, the smaller storm flag was lost and no one knows what became of it. But the larger flag was handed town to Major Armistead’s family, who rightfully cherished it as an American heirloom. • Over the years, the Armistead family was bombarded with requests for souvenir scraps of the fabric of the flag. They snipped bits and pieces off, giving them to veterans, government officials, and honored citizens. More than two hundred square feet of the Star-Spangled Banner was eventually given away, including one of the stars. • In 1873 the flag was attached to a canvas backing in order to be displayed at the Boston Navy Yard.

• In 1907, it was donated to the Smithsonian Institute, who later hired a team of ten seamstresses to remove the canvas backing and replace it with a linen backing. It took them two months to sew 1.7 million interlocking stitches in a mesh that covered and reinforced the flag. • The flag spent the next 50 years in a glass case in the Smithsonian’s Arts and Industries Building, before being moved to the National Museum of American History in 1964.

Among them, "MacGyver ," with L ucas T ill and George Eads ("CSI"); "Training Day," with Bill Paxton; "Doubt," starring Katherine Heigl ("Grey's Anatomy") as a smart, chic defense lawyer; Joel McHale ("Community") as an adventure reporter in "The Great Indoors"; and Kevin James ("King of Queens") in a series playing a newly retired police officer.

At "NCIS," we were duped by Michael Weatherly, who was quoted in every interview as saying he left "NCIS" because he "wanted to spend more time with his family and his production company." Actually he'd been given his own series by CBS, "Bull," in which he pays Dr. Bull, a trial consultant. The show is based on the early days of Dr . Phil (McGraw) when he was adviser to Oprah Winfrey in her lawsuit against the Texas Cattlemen. She won, thanks to his advice, and was so grateful she launched his TV career. CBS will be bringing back old favorites in new series.

NBC has renewed "The Carmichael Show" and also will give us "Marlon," starring Marlon Wayons, as a loving father; Vanessa Hudgens in "Powerless"; John Lithgow and Sherri Shepherd in "T rial and Error," a comedy about a big city lawyer and his defense team; and the "Blackout" spin-off with Ryan Eggold.

HOLLYWOOD -- Now it can be told why "Castle" veered off course by separating Castle (Nathan Fillion) and Becket (Stana Katic) -- whose chemistry was so dynamic -- and why Fillion received a contract for season 9 and K atic didn't. H ere's the scoop: After six years of working together, they didn't like each other . But the ratings were high, and so the producers separated them and limited their scenes together. For the finale of season eight, two endings were filmed: 1) Becket is killed off, and the series gets extended for 10 more shows; 2) They're both shot by their arch-enemy , recover and 10 years later are the parents of three children. Their well-hidden disdain for each other was a testament to their acting skills.

At ABC, the most talked about show is "Designated Survivor ," starring Kiefer Sutherland as a cabinet minister.

Fox is rebooting "24" as "24: Legacy" with Corey Hawkins (soon in "Shull Island" and late of "The W alking Dead"), Jimmy Smits ("Sons of Anarchy") and Dan Bucatinsky ("Scandal"), and the return of "Prison Break" with W entworth Miller, Dominic Purcell and Mark Feuerstein. Plus, "Shots Fired," with Helen Hunt and Richard Dreyfuss, and "Star," about three girls who form a rock band, starring Benjamin Bratt and Queen Latifah. And Mark H armon is moonlighting from "NCIS" in the film "Last Full M easure," with M organ Freeman, Scott Eastwood and Laurence Fishburne. It's time to break out the classic song, "Everything Old Is New Again!" (c) 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.

Surviving Life," "Famous" (canceled before it had even begun filming), "Grandfathered," "The Grinder" (it pains me to write that this brilliant comedy is no more), "Knock Knock Live," "Minority R eport" and "Second Chance." Next week, it's NBC's turn.

This is where John Ivers, a blue-collar worker , decided he wanted to build a roller coaster in the backyard of his home off Highway 41 — and he didn't let his lack of an engineering background stop him. What exactly is N apoli glass? -- Sherrie, Westport, Connecticut A: According to "Glass A to Z" by David Shotwell, N apoli glass was patented in 1894 by Albert Steffen, then supervisor of the M ount Washington Glass Company. This type of glass is made by forming an outline of a figure or design on one side of the ware and forming the actual figure or design on the opposite. LOW SODIUM ... OR NOT Low-sodium foods are everywhere on grocery-store shelves, and it's assumed those are the ones we should have.

SUNSCREEN PROTECTION CAN BE GUESSING GAME A blistering hot day that came out of nowhere was a good reminder about stocking up on sunscreen for summer. Right on time, Consumer Reports has released information in their J uly 2016 issue indicating that we need to beware: The SPF (sun protection factor) on the label might not be what we actually get when we use the sunscreen. Consumer Reports tested 60 sunscreens — stick, lotion and spray — that were supposed to be rated at SPF 30 or higher. Unfortunately, 43 percent of them turned out not to have what was on the label. A few even tested at less than 15, half of what was promised. This problem isn't only for this year; Consumer Reports has found the same results over the past four years. A big concern, especially if you keep sunscreen to slather on grandchildren, is that the manufacturers don't even have to submit their product to the Food and Drug Administration for analysis, and they don't have to test the products unless there's a reformulation. No matter which sunscreen we use, we have to take some responsibility to use it correctly. Put it on 15 to 30 minutes before going outside. U se enough. R eapply every two hours, or after getting wet. U se sunscreen even on a cloudy day . Wear a hat and sunglasses. Don't stay out too long, even with sunscreen. To read the whole article, ask your local library if you can access monthly magazines via a digital download feature. Many libraries now have this, and you can even look at magazines right from your home computer . Most subscriptions, however , seem to run a month behind what you'll find on the newsstands.

The British J ournal The Lancet recently set off a firestorm when it reported the result of research: High sodium intake is bad for those with high blood pressure, increasing cardiovascular events and death. (OK, that's no surprise.) However ... low sodium intake is bad for those with or without high blood pressure and is associated with cardiovascular events and death. To read it again: Very-low sodium intake can cause cardiovascular events and death, whether or not you have high blood pressure. This was no small-population study. McMaster University in Canada and National University of Ireland-Galway looked at 130,000 people in 49 countries. Why is it that low intake of sodium can potentially be bad for us? We're left mystified, because the study only mentions "adverse elevations of certain hormones." A 2014 study with 101,000 participants in 17 countries found the same results, with an average amount of sodium being a lot less risky for cardiovascular events and death than very low sodium intake. This study got specific with the numbers (including a chart) and showed that the sodium intake suggested by the American Heart Association is very near the low-sodium level that causes problems. Then there's the other study that shows that adequate sodium helps to fight infection. The firestorm started when the American H eart Association jumped in and called the Canada-Ireland study flawed and not valid. There are some illnesses and situations, however, that can be made worse by a low-sodium diet. What do we do with this conflicting information? W e track our sodium intake and let our doctor know what it is, and we take the advice we're given. We have to decide whom to trust. (c) 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.

MEASURING YOUR HEALTH Even in the 21st century , with all of the high-tech gadgets that are available to monitor our health, a tape measure can be quite telling. W e have seen the emergence of powerful electronic devices equipped with sophisticated sensors that check our heart rate, blood pressure, steps, etc. The tape measure is not as widely used, but it can reveal a lot, too.

Studies also demonstrate that healthy fat tissue acts as an active "organ," releasing a variety of bioactive proteins into our blood. Adiponectin is one of these important proteins. It increases fat breakdown to release energy, which lowers the number of free fatty acids in

A PATRIOTIC PLEDGE • In the late 1800s a magazine called “The Youth’s Companion” was very popular . Editor J ames Upman promoted education tirelessly and instigated a program of premiums for subscribers. The prizes included such things as patriotic posters, historical books, and especially American flags. H e began a concerted campaign encouraging all schools to install American flags, and he sold them the flags.

•In 1892 Upman was preoccupied with the 400th anniversary of the arrival of Columbus in the N ew World. He wanted a nationwide celebration on that day to underscore his belief that the American system of free universal education was the source of the country ’s success. He asked Francis Bellamy, who worked for the National Education Association, to help him create a program for schools for the Columbus Day event.

• Bellamy wrote a speech, devised a flag-raising ceremony, and penned a simple creed that school children could recite in unison as the flag was raised. The pledge that Bellamy wrote was short so that even the youngest of schoolchildren would be able to memorize it. These details were published in the September edition of the magazine. • On October 12, 1892, millions of children all over the United States recited this creed while saluting the flags. This started a tradition. In 1942 Congress recognized the creed as the official national pledge of the U.S., now called the Pledge of Allegiance. • The original version was: "I pledge allegiance to my Flag and the R epublic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all." In 1923, the words, "the Flag of the United States of America" were added. In 1954, the words “under God” were added.

A PATRIOTIC SONG • Born in Massachusetts in 1859, K atharine Lee Bates grew up to become a professor of English literature at Wellesley College. She was also a prolific writer , authoring many books, articles, poems, and stories. • In 1893 she traveled to the R ocky M ountains where she spent the summer teaching at Colorado College. One day, she joined a group of people headed for the top of 14,000-foot Pikes Peak. They traveled by wagons, mules, and foot. • Katharine was exhausted by the time she reached the top, but the view was magnificent. Inspired by the sight of the mountains, plains, and skies, she composed a poem celebrating the beauty of America. • Two years later , her poem was published in a magazine called “ The Congregationalist” for their F ourth

of July edition, and it reached an even wider audience when it was reprinted in “ The Boston Evening T ranscript” in 1904. • M eanwhile, a N ew J ersey musician named Samuel W ard had written a hymn called “Materna.” The song’s first line was, ‘O M other dear , J erusalem’ and the tune was metrically identical to Katharine’s poem. It was natural for Katharine’s poem and Samuel’s tune to match up , and soon people were singing the new song. • By the time K atharine died in 1929, the song whose lyrics she had penned had become a national favorite. • Many people approached Congress asking for this song to be chosen as America ’s national anthem because it is simple, beautiful, and easy to sing. Even though “The Star Spangled Banner” was chosen in 1931, many people still feel that K atharine and Samuel’ s song would make a better national anthem. The song is called “America the Beautiful.”

DON'T GO TO RIO Like all great stories, here's one that starts with a girl and ends with a heart attack. And, like many misapplied missives, let's try and apply it to the upcoming Olympic Games at Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. The year is 1996, and the place is Atlanta's Centennial Olympic Park, the "commons area" for that year's games. Located just outside the Athletes Village at Georgia Tech and the dorms at Georgia State, and forced into a small, once-barren urban parcel between the Georgia Dome and CNN headquarters, Olympic Park was a place to grab a beer at the spacious Anheuser-Busch tent, listen to a slate of live bands and queue up for a taxi ride home or shuttle to your car . This was where I spent much of my time, working for a large tech company inside the Athletes Village. It was a magical Olympics: Ali lit the torch. K erri Strug landed a vault on a broken leg. The Dream T eam was regulating. And on July 27, after a shift, I decided to celebrate at the Olympic P ark and listen to a few bands. At that point, I ran into a girl from days gone by , and consumed with nostalgia, we decided to leave the park to visit with one another . After all, the next band was "Jack Mack and the Heart Attack," and who the heck were they? I had just seen Run DMC play the Olympic Athletes Laundromat and spent the afternoon chilling with Ziggy Marley underneath a tree ... I was good.

I also was lucky. Twenty minutes later, a bomb went off in the park, killing two people and injuring more than 100. Had we stayed, we would have been within 50 yards of the blast, and almost certainly taken a nail or two from the insidious bomb. I went back to work the next day and joined the chorus of volunteers and amateurs who wanted to see the games go on. That was then; this is now. It may come as a surprise to you to learn that the mosquito is the most deadly animal on the planet. Each year, the little female of the species bites, drinks from and in so doing infects, millions of people and animals around the world, killing more than even we humans do. This year's Olympics are to be held in Brazil. They are not ready, nor are they prepared to deal with the ramifications of the Zika virus, a virus we are just beginning to understand, a virus that deforms babies and can be transmitted sexually. That last part has me the most worried: Athletes are proud of their bodies. They actually made the hookup app Tinder a household name due to its handiness in the last Athletes Village. The World Health Organization is calling for a delay. Rio is in disarray. We should heed its advice. This is how outbreaks occur, and for what? We can still play the Games, but we can't be stupid. Zika is for real, and figuring out how to handle this threat is as serious as any Jack Mack and the Heart Attack. Mark Vasto is a veteran sportswriter who lives in N ew Jersey. The intensity of a cardiovascular workout can be measured simply by your pulse rate. A rough but commonly used guide is that moderate cardiovascular exercise is 50 percent to 70 percent of your age-predicted maximum of 220 minus your age. So for age 50, your maximum is 170, and moderate ex ercise is a pulse of 85 to 119. Y ou can check your pulse at the wrist with a clock, or wear a heart monitor. Swimming almost always is a more-intense workout than walking (race walkers certainly can get a very fast pulse rate), and walking in the pool is a good exercise for your heart and many muscles.

DON'T LET SUMMER HEAT CURTAIL CARDIO WORKOUT DEAR DR. ROACH: I usually walk 45 minutes daily for a cardio workout. H owever, the Florida summer heat can be brutal, so instead of walking, I swim and walk one hour in the pool. Is that as good a cardio workout as walking? -- R.G. ANSWER: I think that having several different ways to exercise is a good idea , since the muscles used will always be at least somewhat different and it can keep you from being bored when doing the same thing day after day. In your situation, I think that it makes a great deal of sense to avoid the heat by getting in the pool.

If the pool is outdoors, as is usual in warm, sunny places, you need to wear and reapply plenty of sunscreen to protect your skin. *** DEAR DR . The other half was shrunk with chemo and radiation. I am concerned about the long-term effects of radiation, because I had a stroke in 2012 and the doctors said this stroke might have been a link to long-term effects of radiation. But 36 years later? Can you confirm or deny that the long-term effects of radiation cause stroke? -- B.R. ANSWER: I can't tell you whether your stroke was caused by the radiation you received; however , I can

confirm that high-dose radiation (from radiation therapy for your tumor, not from a diagnostic CT scan) increases the overall risk of transient ischemic attack and stroke. A well-done study from Australia in 2011 showed that radiation treatment appro ximately doubles the risk of TIA and stroke. This does not mean that the treatment you had in 1978 was inappropriate. T reatment of a brain tumor , even a noncancerous one, is critical, because there is very little room in your head for a tumor in that position. The medical treatment we have now for these kinds of tumors was not available in 1978. What this means for people with a history of radiation treatment to the head is that they should do everything to reduce their risk of stroke, which means no smoking, careful control of blood pressure and cholesterol, careful diet including low sodium and low sugar , and discussion with a doctor about aspirin therapy. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. High Calcium Intake Does Not Protect From Bone Fracture A high intake of calcium may not offer more protection from bone fractures, according to a study published online in the J ournal of Bone and Mineral R esearch. R esearchers measured calcium intake and the number of bone fractures in 6,210 participants who consume plantbased diets from the China Health and Nutrition Survey. Calcium intakes ranging from 275-780 mg/d and 250-650 mg/d for men and women, respectively , were found to be the most protective, with no added benefits for consuming above that range. The authors conclude that a plant-based diet may be associated with lower requirements for calcium intake for bone health, compared with Westernized diets, and suggest that dietary policies reflect this in countries where most of the population's diet is lower in animal products. paste made for humans on a pet is because it contains flouride, which can be fatal to pets if ingested. And because your dog will swallow all toothpaste being used on her teeth, that is a problem. Why brush? Healthy teeth and gums don't just preserve her teeth, they can prevent heart disease. So , knuckle down and buy a dog-specific toothbrush and toothpaste, either from the vet or the pet store. Or, you can even make your own baking soda- and bullion-based recipe.

WHY DOGS CAN'T USE PEOPLE TOOTHPASTE

To brush your dog's teeth, hold her securely and place a little bit of doggy toothpaste on the brush (you can use a cotton ball on puppies and small dogs, to start). Let her taste it, then cradle her muzzle and lift one side of her lip. Place the brush against her gums and gently sweep downward.

She will lick the toothpaste away as you work, so use as much as you need. The first few tries may even be frustrating as she tries to break away. The key is to brush regularly, at least once a week, and try different flavors. And never scold her: give lots of encouragement during the brush and a healthy treat right after.

DEAR PAW'S CORNER: My dog's veterinarian said that I need to brush her teeth to keep them from falling out. He then tried to sell me a tube of "special" toothpaste that cost $9! Plus it smelled like canned chicken. What is the point if brushing isn't going to freshen her breath? GETTING THINGS DONE Looking at the steps involved in getting something done — what educators call "task analysis" — is for all ages. Thinking ahead and planning what direction to take in accomplishing a task are skills we continue to develop throughout our lives. Teachers in lower elementary grades begin the process of helping students learn how to map out steps to complete a task. As they grow older , students benefit from these skills when they begin to write term papers, do research reports and study for exams. Breaking large tasks down into smaller , more manageable parts takes practice and patience. This skill can be taught and reinforced at home, too, whether it's planting a vegetable garden or baking a batch of chocolate-chip cookies. Before your kids begin a craft project or chore, encourage them to ask, "What will it take to get this done?" Here are additional questions to guide them through the process: —How much time will the project take? Discuss the time required to complete the task (including cleanup) and the time available. Will it be done before your piano lesson?

If you work in the yard, do you have garbage bags and brooms so you don't have to run back and forth to the hardware store?

—Is an adult needed, and will that person be available? Many activities require extra strength or supervision, for safety reasons, when using sharp objects, a hot iron or a stove. *** Donna Erickson's award-winning series "Donna's Day" is airing on public television nationwide.
