• Dubbed “The High Priest of Soul,” Ray Charles blended the musical genres of rhythm and blues, gospel, and blues into a style all his own. He was born Raymond Charles Robinson to sharecropper parents in Georgia, and by age three, he had a love of music. A local café owner regularly played boogie woogie on an old piano and taught young Ray how to play. At four years old, Ray began losing his sight as the result of glaucoma, and by seven, was completely blind. He was enrolled in the Florida School for the Deaf and Blind and there began to develop his talent, where he played Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven. At 15, he was an orphan. At 22, he landed a record contract with Atlantic Records where his long list of hits began. In 1960, at age 30, his fame skyrocketed with “Georgia on My Mind” and four Grammy Awards. Although he battled heroin addiction for 16 years, he kicked the habit in 1966 at age 36. Ray Charles sang at two Presidential inaugurations, and “Rolling Stone” magazine has ranked him at #2 on their list of the “100 Greatest Artists of All Time.” • Famous chef Rachael Ray grew up in the restaurant business with restaurant manager parents. But her first job in New York City was working at the candy counter at Macy’s, where she worked her way up to manager of the fresh foods department. It was while working at a gourmet market in Albany, New York, that she conceived the idea of “30 Minute Meals” for customers who were unenthusiastic about cooking. The local television station asked her to host a weekly segment during the newscast, which led to a best-selling book and a contract with the “Today Show.” Five years later, she debuted her own Emmy Award-winning talk show.

• Sugar Ray Robinson is ranked one of history’s greatest professional boxers, with 108 knockouts in 200 pro bouts. His 91-fight unbeaten streak ranks third longest in boxing history. Muhammad Ali referred to Robinson as “the king, the master, my idol.” Sugar Ray wasn’t really a Ray at all, but was born Walker Smith, Jr. in 1921.

When he retired from boxing in 1965, his record was 173 – 19 – 2, and he had never been physically knocked out in a fight. He was also was owner of a fashionable restaurant, Sugar Ray’s, a hangout of Frank Sinatra, Joe Louis, Lena Horne, and Jackie Gleason. Unfortunately, at the time of his retirement, Robinson had spent all of the $4 million in career earnings. He appeared in a few minor film roles, but health problems plagued him, and he passed away from complications of diabetes and Alzheimers Disease at age 67. • Sugar Ray Robinson was followed by another pro boxer, Sugar Ray Leonard, born in 1956. Leonard’s mother named him after her favorite singer, Ray Charles. Leonard was the first boxer to earn more than $100 million in the ring and was named the 1980s Boxer of the Decade. His career included eight world titles. His first big victory was the National Golden Gloves Lightweight Championship in 1973. Leonard was chosen for the 1976 U.S. Olympic Team, a team that is considered the greatest boxing team in the Olympics’ history. After capturing a gold medal that year, Leonard intended to study business administration at the University of Maryland. However, financial difficulties forced him into the professional arena, and in 1977 he made his professional debut, being paid $40,044 for the evening’s work. Leonard retired in 1982, then made a comeback, retired again in 1984, followed by another comeback. The action was repeated in 1987 and 1991, with his final retirement in 1997, following the only time he was ever knocked out. He has been a TV boxing analyst for ESPN, a television and movie actor, and contestant on Dancing with the Stars. He is also deeply involved with the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. • Singer-songwriter Ray Stevens is known for his humorous novelty hits such as “Gitarzan,â€? “Ahab the Arab,â€? and “The Streak.â€? Born Harold Ray Ragsdale, Stevens grabbed five Grammy nominations and a win in 1970 for his serious recording “Everything is Beautiful.â€? But his most famous hit is “The Streak,â€? Number One on the charts in 1974, a song about that decade’s fad of running nude in public. Those familiar with the song will recall its famous line, “Don’t look, Ethel!â€? • “I guess to be an entrepreneur you have to have a large ego, enormous pride, and an ability to inspire others to follow your lead.â€?–Ray Kroc

In keeping with the theme of “rays, Tidbits goes underwater to gather info on the beautiful and unusual creatures known as rays.

rays, gave us the name for the warfare device known as the torpedo, a word that translates from the Latin torpere, meaning to be stiffened or paralyzed.

• The scientific classification Batoidea includes the cartilaginous fish known as rays. The flat-bodied rays have a boneless skeleton consisting of a tough elastic material. The flat body enables the ray to conceal itself while seeking out its prey. The ray stirs up the sand and hides beneath it.

• There are no reported human fatalities from electric rays. As early as 46 AD, a Roman physician recorded the use of torpedo fish for the treatment of headaches and gout.

• About 600 species of rays exist, with varying kinds found in every ocean around the world, from the warm tropics to the freezing cold waters in the Arctic. Many species are closely related to the shark. The largest species is the manta ray, with its central disc measuring up to 29.5 feet (9 m) wide. It also has the largest brain of all fish. More than 300 rows of tiny teeth line the lower jaw. A manta consumes about 60 lbs. (27.2 kg) of plankton and fish every day. Found only in the warmer tropical waters, it can live for 25 years. It is completely harmless to humans. • A ray’s mouth is on the underside of its body, and its eyes are on top. Because the ray can’t use its eyes to seek its prey, electro-sensors help them detect electrical charges emitted by the clams, oysters, shrimp, crabs, and mussels it feeds on. • The smallest ray is a tiny electric ray measuring just 4 inches (10 cm) across and weighing only 1 lb. (0.5 kg). • Electric rays are capable of producing an electric charge from 8 to 220 volts. They hide in the sand, waiting for their prey, which they stun and capture. The genus Torpedo, one of the 69 species of electric

• Stingrays have a barbed stinger measuring about 14 inches (35 cm) in length on their tail used for self-defense. Two grooves contain venom, concentrated under a thin layer of skin. They are not hostile creatures and don’t aggressively attack humans, and normally swim away; however, they will sting if stepped on. A sting usually causes pain, swelling, and muscle cramps, but is very rarely life-threatening to humans. Usually, the stinger breaks off in the wound, and surgery is sometimes required to remove it. • It’s not unusual for large stingrays to reach a weight of 790 lbs. (358.3 kg). Baby stingrays are born fully developed, emerging as a little adult, and begin to take care of themselves as soon as they’re born. • Stingrays prefer warmer, shallower, near-the-shore waters. • In ancient Greece, the venom of stingrays was used by dentists as an anesthetic. • The death of wildlife expert Steve Irwin occurred in 2006 when a stingray barb pierced him in the chest, puncturing his thoracic wall, while Irwin was filming an underwater documentary film. • A group of stingrays is known as a “fever.â€?

SCIENCE BY SERENDIPITY • Charles Kettering was researching improvements in the gasoline engine in 1912 when the automobile industry was just beginning to grow. He was trying to eliminate the "knock" in the engine, caused when gas takes too long to burn in the cylinder, reducing efficiency. How could he get the gas to burn earlier? He started thinking of things that happen early. He thought of the trailing arbutus, a plant which blooms early. It has red leaves. Kettering thought the red color made the arbutus bloom early. He figured if gas was red, maybe it too would be affected and would burn early. Red dye was what he needed, but he didn't have any red dye. However, he did have iodine. He poured iodine in the gas. The knocking stopped. The following week, he poured red dye in the gas. The knocking started again. He decided it wasn't the red color— it was substances in the iodine. He had made the first important strides in developing the no-knock engine.

veloped safety glass, he was dismayed to find automobile manufacturers uninterested in the development because they felt auto safety was the responsibility of the driver, not the manufacturer. Not until World War I brought the need for shatter-proof safety goggles did Benedictus' invention catch on.

• In 1903 French chemist Benedictus was working in his lab when he accidentally knocked a glass flask to the floor. He heard it shatter, but when he examined it he found all the glass fragments had hung together. Questioning his assistant, he discovered the flask had once held a solution of cellulose nitrate, which is a liquid plastic. The solution had evaporated, and the assistant, thinking the flask was clean enough, had not washed it out before returning it to the laboratory shelf. Only a few days later, Benedictus read an article in a Paris newspaper that mentioned a recent rash of automobile accidents. The article said most of the drivers had been seriously injured by shattered glass. Remembering the broken flask, Benedictus rushed to his lab, and within the next 24 hours had invented safety glass.

• After settling in New Orleans, he frequently experimented with fish oilbased paints. The problem was that they smelled terrible and took forever to dry. When Fergusson was 42 years old, he was put in charge of a fleet of ships during World War I. Taking the opportunity to do further experiments with fish oil, he finally hit on a formula that smelled better, dried fast, and stopped rust overnight.

• After French inventor Benedictus de-

• Robert Fergusson ran away from his home in Scotland at the age of 12, and went to seek adventure on the sea. His duties included swabbing and re-painting the rusty metal deck, always a tedious and time-consuming chore. • One day he lunged for an open container of raw fish oil trying to catch it before it spilled, but failed. It spread all over the deck. In the days following the spill, he noticed that the rust that had been relentlessly creeping across the deck stopped where the fish oil had spilled. He remembered this fact throughout his long career as a sea captain.

• After the war, he founded a paint company in 1921, which did quite well. The company’s name is Rust-Oleum. Today it’s a worldwide leader in protective paints and coatings for both home and industry, and still offers the famous rust-fighting formula that started it all back in 1921. The company’s motto, ‘Rust Never Sleeps,’ was borrowed by singer Neil Young as the name of his 1979 album.

HOLLYWOOD — When Han Solo (Harrison Ford) died near the end of "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," it was the end of Han Solo, right? Wrong! Disney will resurrect Hans Solo in an anthology series of prequels of him as a young man. That young man will be Alden Ehrenreich. Alden was discovered by "Godfather" producer Francis Ford Coppola for "Tetro" (2009), with Vincent Gallo. In 2011, Alden starred with Val Kilmer, Bruce Dern, Elle Fanning and Ben Chaplin in Coppola's film "Twixt." Both films were box-office busts. Things started looking up in 2013 when he starred in "Beautiful Creatures," with Jeremy Irons, Viola Davis, Emmy Rossum and Emma Thompson. It cost $60 million and took in $60 million. He also was in Woody Allen's "Blue Jasmine" the same year and "Hail Caesar" in 2016. Ehrenreich has the lead opposite Lily Collins in Warren Beatty's upcoming film "Rules Don't Matter," which also stars Annette Bening, Matthew Broderick, Alec Baldwin and Candice Bergen, and "The Yellow Birds," with Jennifer Aniston. Pretty impressive! *** The search for the new James Bond is on. Tom Hiddleston (Taylor Swift's new man) says he's not been contacted by anyone to play 007, but the press keeps at it. Hiddleston has "King Kong: Skull Island" (opening March 10) and "Thor: Ragnarok" (due out November 2017). However, two actors have been screen-tested for James Bond. Jamie Bell (star of "Billy Elliot," in 2000), who, ironically, starred in the "King Kong" remake in 2005. He was last seen in "The Fantastic Four" in 2015. The second actor is Theo James of the 2013 CBS series "Golden Boy," and "Divergent" and its sequels, "Insur-

Q: I just got my copy of "Harry Potter and the Cursed Child," and I also can't wait for "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them" to open. What else is happening in the Harry Potter world? — Nina F., via email A: NBC Universal just signed a seven-year deal with Warner Bros. for exclusive broadcast and basic-cable rights to the eight "Potter" movies, as well as the three planned "Fantastic Beasts" movies. In a press release, NBC Universal announced: "Through this deal, Universal Studios Hollywood, Universal Orlando and Universal Studios Japan can explore a range of new opportunities, including fan events, movie screenings, and promotional activities tied to the 'Harry Potter' franchise and the upcoming 'Fantastic Beasts' film series." *** Q: "Casual" is one of my favorite shows, and I already miss it even though season two just ended. Will it be back for another? — Nico T., via email A: Hulu has picked up the dark-comedy series starring Tommy Dewey and Michaela Watkins for a third season. In more Hulu news: "The Path" is in production on its second season, while season five of "The Mindy Project" premieres this fall. *** Q: First I want to thank you for giving an address to write to for people like me who have nothing to do with computers to have the chance to try to respond to all life has to offer. gent" and "Allegiant." He may not do the next sequel, "Ascendant," because it's being planned as a TV film. In the works are the crime comedy "The War on Everyone" (with Alexander Skarsgard), as well as "London Fields," with Billy Bob Thornton and Amber Heard, and the sequel to "Underworld: Awakening," "Underworld: Blood Wars," with Kate Beckinsale. He's currently filming "Backstabbing for Beginners," with Ben Kingsley and Jacqueline Bissett. James has two film franchises; will 007 make it three times the charm? *** For Benedict Cumberbatch, his personal life began at 40. On Valentine's Day 2015, he married Sophie Hunter (after a 17-year friendship), and they had a son, Christopher Carlton, the same year. He'll hit the big screen in the superhero film "Doctor Strange" (out Nov. 4) and "Jungle Book Origins," with Christian Bale, Matthew Rhys, Frieda Pinto and Cate Blanchett (Oct. 19). Victoria Laurie graphed copy of a book by one of my favorite authors. I randomly drew four names to win the four copies of the book I have, and you were one of them! The other winners are Kimberly Fischer (who won via email entry), Lara Baker (Twitter entry) and Kerri Snow-Hugmeyer (Facebook entry). I spoke with Victoria to get the inside track on "A Grave Prediction" and her insight behind having Abby working with the LA bureau of the FBI: "It's an opportunity for Abby to explore the possibility of working with people she doesn't trust and who don't trust her. It's not an easy profession, being a psychic; you get a little flinchy. You get a little defensive because you are always prepared for people to think the worst of you, for people to believe that you've got a screw loose or, even worse, that you're a charlatan. It's that attitude I really wanted to explore in this latest book. I wanted to throw Abby into a situation where she wasn't trusted and had to prove herself again." Visit celebrityextraonline.com for my full and compelling interview with Victoria about "A Grave Prediction," the end of the Ghost Hunter series, and what she's got in store next for fans. FUN STUFF TO DO IN 5 MINUTES What can you do in five minutes? Anything constructive? My friend's mom had her doubts about it as a young girl growing up in Oregon. One day she acted bored and fidgety while waiting for her dad to get ready to take her somewhere. He suggested that she do something constructive while she waited. She told him that a few minutes wasn't time enough to get anything done. Right then they jumped in the car and he drove her to a little house at the end of a streetcar line. It had a stunning garden, full of beautiful flowers. My friend's mom was amazed. Her dad told her the little house belonged to a streetcar operator. Each time the streetcar reached the end of the line where the house was located, the operator would hop off and tend his garden for the five minutes he had before he had to hop back on and begin the streetcar's run in the opposite direction. Her father said to her, "Look what the man has accomplished by making good use of the few minutes he had each time the streetcar stopped."

You might want to sit around the breakfast table with your kids today and think of the things you can do together that take about five minutes, then make a list to refer to when you are looking for a quick activity to share. If you happen to lose track of time, remember that in family life there doesn't have to be a clock or a finish line. Here are ideas to make five minutes in your busy days count: — Pick a chore and finish it together. For example, fold towels from the dryer, wipe down kitchen counters,

It was a lesson to remember.

TOO MUCH VITAMIN D DEAR DR. ROACH: I am an 86-year-old woman with three doctors battling over my vitamin D level for many years. I am 59 inches tall and weigh 95 pounds. I play nine holes of golf three times a week. I have always been a poor eater, so I get little nourishment from food. I drink 3 ounces of scotch every evening with chips. That's my nourishment. I've beaten lung cancer and recently had skin cancer surgery in my ear. The vitamin D situation never goes away, and the doctors keep changing my meds. One of the doctors claims that my vitamin D count is almost toxic (my blood levels of vitamin D are 121 from my rheumatologist and 145 from my internist), and I have been taken off any meds with vitamin D in them, but it's still high. I am feeling OK now and want to forget the whole matter of the vitamin D level. Your opinion would be appreciated. — Anon.

ANSWER: I admire your spirit for life, even if I don't agree with your diet. I have seen only one case of vitamin D excess in my career. It is very rare if people are taking less than 4,000 IU of vitamin D daily, so I suspect you were taking much higher doses at some point. When I hear that multiple doctors may have been taking care of you, I worry that more than one was prescribing high doses of vitamin D. There also have been cases of manufacturing errors and excess fortification of milk, but these are quite rare. Vitamin D is normally stored in the liver, with the fat cells becoming a second reservoir. The toxicity of vitamin D is due to high calcium levels, which can cause confusion, nausea and vomiting, and muscle weakness. Toxic levels can be treated with short-term prednisone, but that isn't necessary unless there are symptoms or a dangerously high calcium level. By the time your letter is published, your vitamin D levels should have returned to normal. If they haven't, it's time to look for a rare cause, such as sarcoidosis, where occasionally the abnormal cells can make vitamin D. The booklet on sodium, potassium and mineral discusses the importance of these and other substances to our health. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Roach — No. 202W, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient's printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: My mother was diagnosed a few years ago with macular degeneration (both wet and dry). Is this disease hereditary? What can I do to prevent myself from getting this disease? — K. ANSWER: There does seem to be an increased risk in people with a family history. Several studies have shown that vitamins, especially B vitamins, can reduce risk by a third or so. Since a combination of zinc and vitamins A, C and E was shown to help reduce progression of macular degeneration, many experts recommend it for prevention as well.

CRUSHED FINGERTIP IS SLOW TO HEAL DEAR DR. ROACH: Three months ago, I slammed the fingertip of my left index finger in a drawer. The fingertip is still swollen and painful. My doctor sent me for an X-ray, and there is no fracture. I can bend it at the joint, but cannot put pressure on the fingertip. I looked online, and read something that said a fingertip crush injury can take six months to a year to heal, and the swelling may never go away completely. Can this possibly be true? Why does it take so long? Is there anything I can do to help it heal? I can get along OK without using the finger for everyday functioning, but I am a guitar player, and I really need to use that fingertip to play. Is there hope that I will be able to play again someday? I would be very sad to have to give it up. — D.L. ANSWER: Crush injuries to the fingertip often do take months to heal completely, due to the fact that there isn't a lot of room in the fingertip and that there are many important structures in the fingertip, and that a little bit of inflammation can cause pain and loss of function for a long time. Fortunately, most everybody does regain complete use of the hand, and I wouldn't sell your guitar just yet.

Think about what Pete Townshend did to his hand, and he's still a pretty good guitar player. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: My 18-year-old grandson has just been diagnosed with superior mesenteric artery syndrome. It sounds extremely serious. Would you be able to tell me more? I am very worried. — G.D. ANSWER: The superior mesenteric artery is one of the critical arteries that supplies blood to the intestines. Directly underneath the SMA is the duodenum, the first part of the small intestine. In SMA syndrome, loss of the normal fat around the duodenum causes the artery to constrict the duodenum, causing a compression of the duodenum and an obstruction to food going through. Serious weight loss due to medical illness, surgery or anorexia nervosa is the most common cause of SMA syndrome. It's a difficult diagnosis to make, and there is some controversy about what criteria are used for diagnosis. If weight loss is the underlying cause of SMA syndrome, then nutritional support and weight gain become the primary treatment. Surgery is sometimes necessary. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: You wrote about reheating foods in a microwave, and advised against Styrofoam or other plastic containers. What is the best kind of container to use in the microwave? The manual says not to use anything metal. — J.W. ANSWER: Most plastics probably are safe to heat liquids in, but reheating foods can cause pockets of very high temperatures that can partially melt the plastic and cause the release of potentially harmful chemicals. I recommend using glass or ceramic plates or bowls to reheat food. Many people wrote in to tell me that Dow Chemical's brand of polystyrene, Styrofoam, is not used for cups. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. land was an island, so the region was given the name of the mythical place: California. • In Mongolia, it's common to put salt in one's tea before drinking it. • If you're a fan of nature documentaries, you've doubtless seen footage of Africa's Serengeti, site of the world's largest terrestrial mammal migration. If you've see images of the place, you won't be surprised to learn that in Maasai, the word "Serengeti" means "the place where the land runs on forever."

• It was English Victorian author Samuel Butler who made the following sage observation: "Words are like money; there is nothing so useless, unless when in actual use." • Martha Jane Canary — better known as Calamity Jane — was a noted frontierswoman in the late 19th century. She defied expectations of women by refusing to wear dresses, becoming a scout and fighting against Indians in the West. As one contemporary commenter observed, "She swore, she drank, she wore men's clothing. She was 50 years ahead of her time." • It was once against the law in some places — England, for example — for a man to marry his brother's widow. It was considered to be an incestuous relationship. • On a per-capita basis, Canada is the most educated place in the world; more than half of the country's residents have earned at least one college degree. • Those who study such things say that two-thirds of a shark's brain is dedicated to detecting and sorting out odors. • In his 1510 book "The Adventures of Esplandian," Spanish author Garci Rodriguez de Montalvo wrote of an island peopled entirely by Amazon-like women, and he called it California. It is surprising, though, that, according to a recent survey, 54 percent of teens feel their teen years would be happier if social media didn't exist. • This contentious election season is a good time to increase your vocabulary. Let's see ... there was the deadball era, the spitball era, the Babe Ruth era, the integration era, the World War II era, the expansion era, the year of the higher mound (not an era, but a noticeable blip on the timeline), the free-agent era, the designated-hitter era, the cocaine era, the steroid era, the "Moneyball" era and now this era.

END OF AN ERROR If we needed any further evidence that baseball is, once again, metamorphosing into a different era, this season's trade deadline was all the proof needed. While all major sports do the same — basketball recently saw the addition of the three-point line, football killed the kickoff return, tennis now allows limited coaching, boxing switched to 12-round fights and hockey added the shootout — no other sport has fiddled with its secret sauce as often as baseball. What exactly constitutes an "era," you may be asking? Well, in Boston, that's how they pronounce the word "error," as in "Nomah shouldn't be chahged with an era on that play!" Those in the English-speaking parts of the country generally see an "era" as beginning with a readily identifiable change in culture. Baseball, probably due to its fan base's love of statistical scrutiny, seems to revel in this sort of unofficial, much-written-about classification system.

What do we call this era? The 100-plus mph bullpen era? The infield shift era? The Chachi Arcola Republican Convention Speech era? The search for stars? While the league has its share of superstars, if Bryce Harper, Giancarlo Stanton or Clayton Kershaw walked past you at the Kwik-E Mart, 95 percent of the population would not recognize them, I'd wager (but not on the game if I was a manager). Baseball is in great financial shape, or so we are constantly being told. Still, the game has some major-league flaws. The fact that an entire state can't watch a Yankee game due to a fight with a cable company is abhorrent. The fact that a single exhibition game that managers don't play to win can control home-field advantage for the seven-game championship series is moronic. One thing is clear, however: We are moving out of the boring "on-base percentage is the best statistic there is" phase. Unless it's Rickey Henderson, nobody spends hundreds of dollars to go see a baseball game and root, root, root for the home team to walk. Thankfully, Ned Yost and the Royals freed us from that oppression. They did this by developing a strong farm system that taught fundamentals stressing movement ... great defense, speed and hits, backed by a lights-out bullpen. Now that's baseball worth paying to see. It's been a little over 40 years since George Steinbrenner ushered in the free-agent era by signing Catfish Hunter.

At this year's trade deadline, Hal Steinbrenner's fire sale of five veterans, the surefire impending release of A-Rod and lack of extension talk for Mark Texeira in order to shore up an anemic farm, signaled another change: the big-trade era, perhaps? I'm personally in favor of austerity because no matter what, a few things will never change for baseball: Good pitching beats good hitting, you can't catch a ball hit out of the park and the team with the most runs wins. FOUNTAIN PEN Q: I have a Parker fountain pen that was used by my uncle during the 1930s. He was a banker and considered it his favorite writing instrument. It is the "Thrift Time" model in brown. What is it worth? — Stan, Kent, Washington A: The first fountain pen was invented in 1830, but they were not really manufactured commercially until the 1880s, when a suitable metal for the tips was perfected. The first successful commercial fountain pen producers were Waterman (1884) and Parker (1888). Parker entered the market with a fountain pen named "Lucky Curve." Vintage fountain pens are collectible, and some have become quite pricey. I found your pen referenced in "Collecting Pens" by Edward Kiersh and published by House of Collectibles. According to Kiersh, your Parker Thrift Time was produced in 1932 and is worth about $150. The Pen Collectors of America can be contacted at www.pencollectorsofamerica.com. *** Q: I have a Mickey Mouse Club projector with films and in its original box. The box is falling apart. It is model 488, and I am curious if it has much value. — Erna, Falls City, Texas A: Your projector was manufactured during the early 1950s by Stephens Products, a company based in Middletown, Connecticut. I found several of these projectors on eBay, most priced in the $75-$100 range. One featured the hand-cranked projector in its original box with 14 film strips, including ones featuring Hopalong Cassidy, Chip an Dale and Pluto. It had a requested opening bid of $69. As this column was being written, no bids had been submitted. *** Q: I have my dad's pocketwatch. It was made by Elgin. My problem is I would like to have it cleaned and don't know how to go about this. — Norma, Decatur, Illinois A The Elgin National Watch Company was founded in 1864 in Elgin, Illinois, and produced more jeweled watches than any other company during its more than 90-year history. The company made many low-end watches, all the way up to its famous high-quality railroad grade. The railroad watches are especially collectible. Although you didn't specify the model or grade of your watch, it is best to have it professionally cleaned by a jeweler. 8 TIPS TO AVOID IDENTITY THEFT MEDICARE: START EARLY TO GET THE FACTS When it's time to sign up for Medicare, we're advised to start three months in advance. That three months might not be enough time to get all the information you need. Your enrollment period is three months before and three months after the month you turn age 65. Start by going online to www.medicare.gov and look at the drop-down menus under What Medicare Covers and Your Medicare Costs. One thing to consider (and it takes the most time) is whether you need a Medicare Advantage Plan, and whether it should be an HMO or a PPO, or possibly a Private Fee-for-Service (PFFS) or Special Needs Plan (SNP).

(c) 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.

Go online to the Advantage Plan search and put in your ZIP code. Enter the names of the drugs you take, plus your pharmacy. Review the plans that are available in your area and look for the five-star plans. Here are some questions to consider: Will you get to stay with your own doctor? Will you have Plan D drug coverage, and does it cover the drugs you need? Does the plan have extras, like dental, hearing and vision coverage? Are you covered if you travel or if you get out-ofnetwork care? And the big question: How much will it cost? Don't just look at the monthly premiums, but also review the extras, such as office-visit charges and co-pays, as well as hospital-stay coverage. Start your search early for Medicare information and what plans are right for you. It might take longer than you think. If you don't enroll when you're eligible, your monthly premium could go up as much as 10 percent as a penalty for each year you weren't enrolled.

Seniors are as much at risk of identity theft as the millions of other people whose information is compromised every year. However, there are ways to reduce your risk of becoming a victim. Here are some suggestions: * Shred anything that comes in the mail that has your name on it (including the envelopes) as well as bank statements, tax returns, old medical information, credit-card offers ... anything someone can use to tie your name to your address. If you don't have a shredder, make some calls. Many senior centers and banks now have a shredding day twice a year where a company is hired to destroy documents right there in the parking lot. Find out if there's one near you. * If you have an electronic device that requires a password, be sure the password contains at least one number and symbol, more if possible. * Send for your free credit report. You get one free report a year from TransUnion, Equifax and Experian. Order one every four months, alternating between the three providers. Go over the reports carefully, especially the parts about accounts, addresses and names used. Take a look at www.annualcreditreport.com for more information. * Don't open emails from people you don't know. Period. Just don't open them. Delete them immediately. * If a caller says you've won a prize but needs you to wire money for fees, hang up. * Leave your Medicare card at home, as well as your Social Security card. * Don't give personal information to anyone who calls you. You really don't know who's on the other end of the phone. * Go over your bank and credit-card statements every month to be sure you recognize every transaction. If you know a senior who might be in danger of having his or her identity stolen, take this column and have a conversation about steps to take to be safe. (c) 2016 King Features Synd., Inc.

SUMMER POTLUCK? OF COURSE! We love hosting dinner parties; however, our time is limited these days. All of the planning, shopping, cooking, serving and cleanup can be a little over-whelming. Exhaustion isn't the best way to start a social evening! So, how do you plan a dinner party without all of the stress? Host a themed, multi-course potluck dinner and make your dinner party an event to remember.

SUMMER FRUIT WITH CHILE, SALT AND LIME You also may want to use papaya or firm, sliced peaches instead of mangoes for this recipe, which serves 5-6. 1 tablespoon kosher salt or other coarse salt 1 1/2 teaspoons ground chile pepper 1 1/2 tablespoons honey or agave syrup

1. Create a theme and a list of courses that fit well with your concept for the evening. If you're centering your potluck dinner around an event -- awards ceremonies, an outdoor concert, a birthday or anniversary celebration -- plan everything from the potluck dishes you assign to the decor to fit the theme.

LUNCH FOR DINNER, DINNER FOR LUNCH A nutritious lunch does not have to be boring or cost you a fortune. Making small changes — like planning a lunch with ingredients that also work well for dinner meals — can save you money. Remember, too, that well-nourished children have a greater chance of success at school because they have the fuel and the energy they need to play and learn. Packing your child's lunch lets you know exactly what he or she is eating. Follow these tips and not only will you save money, you'll also pack a nutritious lunch that your child will enjoy. 1. Practice good nutrition yourself. Children learn by association — you need to be a role model. Talk with them about the benefits of healthy eating. 2. Make your own. Avoid high-priced prepackaged lunches. 3. Send in leftovers. Invest in a good insu-

lated food container to keep food warm. Homemade soup is always a good option. 4. Buy what's on sale each week and use coupons, then work it into a menu. Use fruits and vegetables that are in season. 5. Buy store brands and compare unit prices. 6. Look high and low — bargains are usually on the top or bottom shelves, not at eye level. 7. Plan ahead and have a list when you go to the store. The more time you spend in a store, the more money you spend. 8. A healthy lunch should contain foods from each of the five food groups: Carbohydrates, protein, dairy, fruits and vegetables. Choose whole-grain products like bread, tortillas, pita bread, bagels or whole-grain crackers. These are more nutritious, have more fiber, vitamins and minerals, and keep blood sugar steady for optimal learning. 9. Include the kids in the process and give them choices. Take them along when grocery shopping. Let them pick one new fruit or vegetable each week to try. Let them help prepare dinner and use the leftovers to pack their lunch.

2. Try mixing things up by have each course showcase a single ingredient. This way, you get an eclectic mix of dishes unlike the typical offerings at this type of gathering. For example, you could have a potluck on the beach, or a vegetable-forward Farmer's Market Feast in the country. Potluck dinners, by their very nature, are designed to be portable and casual in nature. 3. Plan the dinner in courses, from appetizers to the dessert, breads and drinks: Create your guest list and assign a menu item to each guest. Check with your guests about any food allergies, and share that information with everyone who is preparing food. 4. Assign more than one person to prepare each course, with enough servings for all of the guests. As the host, you may want to take care of one of the appetizers and one of the main-course dishes. That way, you don't have to worry about a late arrival bearing the first course or a last-minute cancellation that could delay dinner.

Zest and juice of 1 lime 1 (10-pound) watermelon, cut into wedges 2 large mangoes, cut into thick slices, discard pit Lime wedges and mint leaves for garnish (optional) 1. Combine the salt, chile pepper and lime zest in a mortar and pestle. Alternatively, you can finely chop the lime zest and use a fork to mix it with the salt and the chile powder. 2. Arrange the watermelon wedges and mango slices on a platter and drizzle with lime juice and the agave or honey so the chile mixture will adhere to the fruit. Sprinkle the chile mixture on top. Garnish with lime wedges and mint leaves, if desired. Serve immediately or refrigerate until ready to serve. This dish packs well in a sealed container in a cooler.

Here is a potluck dish that works well for a summer gathering: a simple appetizer for Summer Fruit with Chile, Salt and Lime.

When: Saturday, August 20, 3-5 p.m. Where: Miami Seaquarium, 4400 Rickenbacker Causeway, Key Biscayne, FL 33149 Please join United for Animals Florida in speaking up for Lolita, an orca who has been held captive at the Miami Seaquarium for over 40 years. She has been alone in the smallest tank in North America for 30 of those years, forced to perform every day. We need your voice to keep the pressure on the Seaquarium to release Lolita to a sea sanctuary and to educate people on why they shouldn't support her captivity. All materials (such as posters and leaflets) will be provided. Please note that reserved parking will not be available, and please be prepared for the weather. If you can't make it, you can still help by urging the Miami Seaquarium to retire Lolita, the lone orca at its facility, to a coastal sanctuary. If he only wants the bones, debone large-boned cuts like the thigh or drumstick, "shock" the bones in boiling water for about 30 seconds and then cool completely. Make up a few, and keep them in the refrigerator. Give Gerald one a day. Be sure to monitor his health, behavior and bowel movements closely to make sure he isn't ingesting splinters or experiencing any adverse effects from these bony treats.

PET-FOOD RECALLS ARE ON THE RISE DEAR PAW'S CORNER: I have five dogs, varying in age from puppy to senior, and three parakeets, and because of their very different dietary needs, I'm careful about what I buy and what they eat. I've seen many more product recalls of pet food than there used to be, even just a few years ago. What is going on? — Daniel, via email DEAR DANIEL: What you're seeing is the result of the Food Safety Modernization Act, which was signed into law in 2011. It gave the Food and Drug Administration more authority to improve food safety, including mandating pet-food recalls. Before the law was passed, individual pet-food companies could recall foods at their discretion. Because of this — and because the regulations were finalized in September 2015 — we are seeing a lot more pet products being recalled. For pet owners, this sudden increase is certainly alarming. However, it's also an indication that some of the new regulations are beginning to work. Companies are complying with the recall mandate, and hopefully the same companies also are working to improve their pet-food products so that they are safe to eat. As a pet owner, you can help keep the new FDA regulations moving forward. Go to www.FDA.gov and search for "pet food." There you'll find detailed instructions on filing a complaint about a pet food, along with information about the latest recalls.

If you want to take more direct action, The Association for Truth in Pet Food, founded by Mollie Morrisette and Susan Thixton, is directly tackling product labeling and advocating for owners of pets sickened by manufactured food.

SHOULD CATS CHEW ON BONES? DEAR PAW'S CORNER: My orangeand-white cat, "Gerald," loves to gnaw on chicken bones. If I don't watch him, he'll jump on the counter and grab a bone from a discard plate or even strip bones off of a baked chicken, leaving the meat! Is he a reincarnated dog? — Blake in Miami DEAR BLAKE: It's certainly not unheard of: Cats may be domesticated, but they're still predators, and gnawing on bones is a way of getting to some of the tastiest parts of a fresh kill, such as the marrow, as well as a lot of nutrients not concentrated in the meat. However, gnawing on cooked bones is a danger because the bones could splinter. And the fact that he's grabbing them unsupervised means he could nab smaller bones that really are problematic. So first, cover up unattended food securely. Next, double-check about the bone-gnawing with Gerald's vet, who will likely have some recommendations. Review Gerald's diet: Is he getting enough nutrients in his dry or wet cat food? If you want to keep giving him bones, raw bones are safer; however, that potentially introduces dangerous bacteria like salmonella. Try lightly steaming a few drumsticks, so they're just cooked, then cool

PREPARING PETS FOR DISASTERS DEAR PAW'S CORNER: I live in a part of the country that rarely sees extreme weather events like tornadoes, hurricanes, floods or blizzards. So I never gave much thought to having a disaster-preparedness kit. However, a couple of weeks ago my neighbor's house caught fire and burned down. Thankfully no one was injured, and they did not own pets, but it got me thinking about how I would care for my cat and dog in an unforeseen disaster. I put together a small disaster kit that I keep in the trunk of my car, stowed out of the way. It has copies of my pets' medical records, two extra leashes and collars with extra ID tags attached, a few single-meal pouches of dog and cat food, a gallon of water and a couple of old T-shirts for emergency bedding (which hopefully have a familiar scent to help them feel at home). If we have to leave very quickly — and in a fire there is no time to try and grab anything, except family — I have a little less to worry about afterward. — Sara in Washington DEAR SARA: That's a great idea, and a very important point about priorities in a disaster — natural or otherwise, like a house fire. Time is essential, so first, get to safety, and worry about paperwork much later. Preparing a pet-care kit is an important part of disaster planning. Sit down with your family to discuss how you will handle events like house fires, evacuation orders or other emergencies. You also should put together a list of local and federal agencies and organizations that can help you during and after a disaster. Send your tips, questions or comments to ask@pawscorner.com.
