Most folks these days have navigated around the YouTube site at some point in their internet browsing. This week, Tidbits delves into the history of this website, founded in 2005.

• Three PayPal employees conceived the idea of a video website in early 2005. Chad Hurley was a 28-yearold graduate in fine arts from Pennsylvania. While at PayPal, Hurley, the company’s first designer and 10th employee, designed the now-familiar official PayPal logo as part of his job interview. Jawed Karim was a 26-year-old East Germany native, the son of a chemist and biochemistry professor. Taiwan-born Steven Chen was a 27-year-old graduate in computer science.

• The founders have differing stories as to the inspiration. One says he wanted to share videos with friends of a dinner party held at his apartment. Another story is that friends were looking for a video of Janet Jackson’s wardrobe malfunction during her Super Bowl half-time performance. The idea was born for a video-sharing site. • The trio of founders opened up shop in Hurley’s garage, and on April 23, 2005, the first video was uploaded by Jawed Karim, a clip entitled, “Me at the Zoo,” chronicling his visit to the San Diego Zoo.

• The first words spoken on YouTube from Karim’s San Diego Zoo clip were, “All right, so here we are in front of the elephants.” To date, more than 38 million people have viewed that first video.

The equipment company’s site became flooded with traffic from people trying to spell YouTube, and promptly sued YouTube for damaging its business, claims that were later dismissed.

cluding anti-Semitic jokes in his site’s content.
(continued):
• The first YouTube video to be viewed a million times was Brazilian soccer star Ronaldinho’s Nike ad entitled “Touch of Gold.” That occurred in September, 2005, just five months after YouTube’s first video was uploaded. • In early 2006, the company abandoned the garage, moving their headquarters to office space above a pizzeria. While here, they took on the company’s first 20 employees. Hurley was the CEO and Chen was the Chief Technology Officer. Karim moved on to the computer science graduate program at Stanford University. • Just 18 months after the first video was uploaded, Google purchased YouTube in October, 2006 for $1.65 billion in stocks, with Chen receiving $310 million, Hurley, $334 million, and $66 million in stocks going to Karim. YouTube was actually losing money at the time of the purchase, about $500,000 a month, but Google realized the enormous advertising potential and buttoned up the sale. • By 2009, there were 1 billion daily video views, about 11,600 views per second. Less than a year later, the views per day surpassed 2 billion per day, 23,150 per second. By 2012, there were 4 billion daily video views. • It’s estimated that approximately 500 hours of video content are uploaded to YouTube every minute. YouTube had about 176 million viewers in 2016, with that number expected to reach 181 million during 2017. It’s the second-largest search engine, after Google, bigger than Bing, Yahoo, and ASK combined. It accounts for about 22% of all social media visits, just slightly lower than Facebook’s 24%. • The most subscribed channel on YouTube once belonged to a Swedish man named Felix Arvid Ulf Kjellberg, better known as PewDiePie. With 55 million subscribers, Kjellberg is a comedian who provides commentary to various video games as he plays them. His annual income last year was around $15 million. While some viewers love his goofy jokes and energetic style, others find his videos “obnoxious and filled with profanity.” He was dropped from YouTube’s preferred channels in February, 2017 for in-

• South Korean singer PSY holds the record for the most watched YouTube video of all time. When “Gangnam Style” was released in 2012, it became the first video to reach 100 million views, accomplished in 52 days. • More than 50 videos have surpassed one billion views, with four of those exceeding 2 billion. The fastest video to reach a billion views was singer Adele’s “Hello” music video, which reached the mark in 87 days. “Hello” reached 100 million in only five days. Only one artist, Justin Bieber, has four YouTube videos that exceed one billion views. • While music videos are very popular on YouTube, nearly half of those who uploaded their own videos posted a video of a pet or animal. Even more than that post videos of family and friends doing everyday things or funny things. Nearly 99% of YouTube’s traffic comes from just 30% of the videos. • If you have the next 24 days free, you can log into YouTube’s longest video, a slideshow of Jonathan Harchick’s 2009 trip to Chile. It will take you about 23 days and 19 hours to catch the slideshow of the trip’s highlights. • Who’s using YouTube? About 45% of baby boomers use the search engine, over 80% of millennials, and a whopping 91% of teens aged 13 to 17! • How does YouTube make money? The site earns its revenue from Google AdSense, a program that targets ads according to site content and the audience. AdSense’s content-targeting technology aids website publishers display ads relevant to their site’s traffic. • One of YouTube’s most positive success stories was that of 2014’s Ice Bucket Challenge to benefit the ALS Association. More than 150 countries participated by uploading videos to YouTube, with more than a billion views, generating over $15 million for the research of Lou Gehrig’s Disease. • More than 80% of internet users have visited YouTube in the last month. About one-third of YouTube users access the site more than once a day. Although YouTube can be navigated in more than 75 different languages, several countries have blocked access to the site. This is because certain posts are offensive to the country’s religion or leadership, or violated a

* You surely know what a boycott is — a method of protest entailing the refusal to buy a product or deal with a person or organization. You might not know, however, where we got the word. Here's the story: In 19th-cuntury Ireland, there was an English land agent named Charles C. Boycott. During a time when crops were failing — depriving many farmers of income as well as food — he refused their pleas to lower rents. In retribution, he was ostracized, with many people refusing to do busi-

HOLLYWOOD — Hugh Jackman will play P.T. Barnum in "The Greatest Showman," out Christmas Day, with Zack Efron, Michelle Williams, Zendaya and Diahann Carroll. Jackman will then take on playing former Senator Gary Hart during the early stages of the 1988 Democratic presidential nomination. If the name Diahann Carroll sounds familiar, it may be because she was the first woman of color to star in her own series, "Julia" (1968-71), and she also starred in "Dynasty" (1984-87) and "The Colby's" (1985-86). She has an Oscar nomination, for "Claudine," has five Emmy nominations and was even up for a Grammy. Carroll returned to TV for "Grey's Anatomy" (2006-07) and "White Collar" (2009-14). No stranger to musicals, she starred on Broadway in Richard Rodgers "No Strings" (1962), winning a Tony award. She's even written a book, her memoir "The Legs Are the Last to Go." Carroll next stars in the live-action film "The Little Mermaid," with Shirley MacLaine, Gina Gershon and William Moseley (of the "Narnia" franchise), due out later this year. Meanwhile, Ryan Reynolds has begun shooting "Deadpool 2" with Leslie Uggams, T.J. Miller and Josh Brolin. It will open June 1, 2018. *** The 1990 film "Tremors" was such a hit that it spawned five sequels, two TV series and a video game. Michael Gross, who played Michael J. Fox's father in "Family Ties" (1982-1989), starred in all six films and both TV series. Now Kevin Bacon, the star of the original film, is set to headline a new "Tremors" series for SYFY, which picks up 25 years later. Bacon says, "This is the only character I've ever thought about revisiting. I just got to thinking,
Q: I loved Juliette Lewis in "Secrets and Lies." Can you tell me what else I can see her in? — Danielle F., via email A: Next up for the prolific actress is EPIX cable network's "Graves." Juliette has been cast in a recurring role in season two. In the series, Nick Nolte plays President Richard Graves, a former two-term POTUS who embarks on a Don Quixote-like quest to right the wrongs of his administration and reclaim his legacy decades later. In this coming season, President Graves turns inward in search of the man he used to be before he was president. His journey is compounded by the arrival of his first grandchild, as well as a new revelation about his son, Jeremy. Graves' journey coincides with wife Margaret's (played by the stellar Sela Ward) Senate campaign, as the former first lady attempts to build her own political legacy. Isaiah Miller, the president's assistant, searches for new direction after taking a bullet for the president in the season one finale. Meanwhile, Graves' spiritual muse, Samantha (Callie Hernandez), finds a new calling as a singer/songwriter. And Juliette comes aboard as Bailey Todd, a hard-living, leather-clad, tell-it-like-it-is music manager and producer out of New York who shows up at Samantha's trailer with the idea that Samantha might have what it takes to be the next big thing. *** Q: I've been hearing rumors that "Curb Your Enthusiasm" is returning. Is this true? — Kyle T., via Facebook A: "Curb Your Enthusiasm" has aired on HBO on and off for eight seasons, but hasn't aired a new episode since 2011. However, the sardonic Larry David will return on

where would this guy end up after 25 years? We hope to create a show that will be fun and scary for fans of the movie? Ironically enough, while this reboot is great news, there's no mention if Michael Gross, now 70, will be in the series. Stay tuned. *** A Facebook post on June 18 announced that William H. Macy had died the night before. I knew he'd just resigned for Showtime's "Shameless," in which he'd played Frank Gallagher since 2011 and 84 episodes. I was saddened for his wife, Felicity Huffman, an Oscar-nominee and "Desperate Housewives" star. I thought it very odd that no major news outlets had reported this, until I found out it was a HORRIBLE HOAX. William H. Macy was not only very much alive, but busy directing and starring in the film "Krystal," with Rosario Dawson, Grant Gustin, William Fichtner, John Leguizamo and wife Felicity Huffman. Macy, who won two Emmys in 2003 for writing and starring in "Door to Door," has directed two other films, "Rudderless," with Billy Crudup, Selena Gomez and Laurence Fishburne, as well as the upcoming sex-comedy "The Layover," with Alexandria Daddario, Kate Upton, Molly Shannon and himself. For an alleged dead guy, he's sure been busy! (c) 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.

Oct. 1, when "Curb" premieres its ninth season on the cable giant. All your favorite series stars will be back, including Cheryl Hines, Jeff Garlin, JB Smoove and Susie Essman. Ted Danson and Mary Steenburgen also are set to return, playing themselves. When asked earlier why he decided to restart the series, Larry replied (in Larry David fashion): "In the immortal words of Julius Caesar, 'I left, I did nothing, I returned.'" *** Q: Can you give me any info on the next season of "American Horror Story"? — Gina T., via email A: Everyone's favorite serial-killer clown, Twisty (played by John Carroll Lynch), will be back for season seven. We last saw him in "Freak Show," where he scared the beejesus out of us, as serial-killer clowns often do. Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Billie Lourd, Billy Eichner, Cheyenne Jackson, Alison Pill, Colton Haynes and Adina Howard also are featured in the new season. *** READERS: Netflix recently announced that season two of "Strangers Things" will drop Oct. 27. The streaming service had previously announced that the horror/nostalgia series would return at Halloween, so I'm thrilled to learn we'll be getting it a few days early. New scams crop up all the time. Some questions to ask yourself:
NEW SCAM TARGETS YOUR HOME SECURITY SYSTEM If you have a home security system — and especially if you have signs in the yard or stickers on the door that say so — you could become the victim of a scam. Here's how it works: Scammers will spot your security warning signs and show up at your door. (In many cases these will be college students hired for the summer.) They'll say that your security company has gone out of business and that you need to sign a contract for new service with their company. They'll ask you to give per-
* If you're a member of a chat forum and have listed your real name as your email address, and you talk about your upcoming vacation to Cancun and happen to mention the dates you'll be gone, what can possibly go wrong? Answer: You've just left a trail of breadcrumbs to your front door for thieves. * If you have a new phone, do you know how to disable the location finder that tracks your every step and tells people where you are? Answer: If not, ask the store to change your privacy settings. * If you get a phone call saying your computer has a virus and that remote tech support can fix it for you,
* Ask for a brochure or phone number you can call later. Ask if they have a license. (They might pressure you and say the offer is good for only that day.) * Call your current company and ask if it has really gone out of business. If so, ask if it's sent the new company to your door. If not, call the police on their non-emergency number and tell them about the encounter. Ask if there are any current scams involving the people who came to your door. * Call the Better Business Bureau and ask if there have been any complaints about the new company. Best bet: Never do business with anyone who comes to your door trying to sell you something. For more resources, look up the number of your state's consumer affairs and complaints and keep it handy. Call if you ever have questions about the legitimacy of any offer you get, either at the door, on the phone or in the mail. AARP also has a Fraud Fighter department at 1-877908-3360.

narian. — Rebecca O., Trinity County, California DEAR REBECCA: Thank you for the correction! I did a little more digging and found detailed advice at the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine's website. The snakebite vaccine itself, developed in the early 2000s, is quite inexpensive compared to treatment for a rattlesnake bite. That can run well above $1,000, as you noted.
DEAR PAW'S CORNER: I am commenting on your answer to the owners worried about their dog being bitten by a snake while on vacation out West. The rattlesnake vaccine is actually only $64; the treatment is well over $1,000 per vial of antivenin. If a pet has the vaccine, it is highly possible that it may not need the antivenin. The vaccine should be given to all dogs at risk for snakebite. Please advise your readers to contact their local veteri-

It's important to keep in mind, as the website notes, that the vaccine isn't complete protection. Its greatest benefit is that it buys your dog time after a snakebite so that you can get it to a veterinarian for emergency treatment with antivenin. According to the manufacturer, a vaccinated dog bitten by a poisonous snake needs to get to the vet within 12 hours for further treatment. Frequent boosters (every 4 to 6 months) may be required. It's important to keep in mind that snakebites are generally very rare at national parks, especially if pets and people stay within trail boundaries. Parks have leash requirements so that your pet stays within your sight and control at all times, further minimizing the risk of a bite. Send your questions, comments and tips to ask@ pawscorner.com. Perhaps it was that fear that led to making the game "count" after the disastrous 2002 game, which was called a tie after 11 innings due to lack of pitchers. The powers that be championed a decision that had the winning league get home-field advantage in the World Series. It was a decision that was almost universally panned. For one thing, managers didn't necessarily play to win the game anymore. They were more interested in getting the most participation from their bench. So baseball, nimble as ever, decided to revert back to making the game a simple exhibition again (after 13 years).
STILL WORTH THE WATCH This time it didn't matter — and nobody cared. The Major League Baseball All-Star Game has long been considered the best all-star game of all professional sports in America. While the NBA has carved out a nice little niche with the slam dunk competition, baseball's midsummer classic, with its fan voting, home run derby and representation of players from every team, has managed to remain relevant during a day and age where it takes a straitjacket to get somebody's attention. They've played the game 88 times, and each league, the American and the National, has won 43 times and split two ties. The All-Star Game used to carry considerable weight back in the days before interleague play, which began in 1997. Up until then, you never got to see your favorite players square off, save for spring training or the World Series. While interleague play became a necessity out of common sense — the fans in St. Louis wanted to see the Yankees play at Busch Stadium more than once a generation — people were sure the All-Star Game would lose its luster.
And what did this year's classic teach us? That baseball is almost impossible to not play seriously. Every player seemed to be giving his all ... the pitchers were bringing the heat (the average speed of a fastball in the game was 97 mph), fielders were diving after balls in the outfield and batters were hacking away at first pitches. In classic fashion, the game was won in extra innings when Robinson Cano hit a laser into the bullpen leading off the 10th. The night previous, Aaron Judge, the guy that everyone is pinning their hopes on being the next great player, hit 47 home runs in the derby ... in the game, he went 0-3, striking out once, just like 23 others did that night. Sports Illustrated did the math. In the AL's 2-1 win, 79 players came to bat and 31 of them either struck out, walked or hit a home run, meaning 39 percent of the time, the ball wasn't even put in play. That's the way today's game is played ... every pitcher seems to throw 100 mph, every home run is of Ruthian proportions. In the end, just like this year's All-Star Game, it didn't matter: baseball is still something worth watching. Mark Vasto is a veteran sportswriter who lives in New Jersey. being Monart. What exactly is Monart? -- Sue, Arizona
WORLD WAR I LETTER Q: I have an original typewritten letter from 1918 about military actions of the AEF. It is a very detailed letter documenting the travel and actions of the 47th Infantry, 7th Brigade and 4th Division of the 3rd Army of Occupation in Germany. The letter was written by my grandfather, and I keep it in a safety deposit box. I feel it may be worth something and would like any suggestions you might have. — Cindy, Walworth, New York A: You have an extremely important heirloom, and I suggest you keep it. I spoke to several collectors, who seem to feel your letter might be worth in the $50 to $150 range, but my advice is to preserve and cherish your grandfather's letter. Q: I have three old magazines that are from 1950. I have the April and December issues of McCall's and also a Look magazine. They are in good to fair condition. I would appreciate any comments you have. -- Suzanne, Grosse Ile, Michigan A: Even though your magazines would be on Social Security if they were people, they really don't have much value. Most post-war McCall's sell in the $5 to $10 range. Your magazines should include a column written by former first lady Eleanor Roosevelt. Look magazine, depending on what is on its cover, is worth perhaps a little more. You mentioned your magazines are not in excellent condition and this also could be a problem, since most collectors like publications that are pristine.
A: John Moncrief, a Scottish glassmaker, was fascinated by the technique of suspending colored enamels within molten glass during the glassmaking process. He opened a business in Perth, Scotland, in about 1924, and he called the glassware he created Monart. Typical prices for Monart are a red mottled vase, $130, and a green/orange/aventurine bowl in clear, yellow and orange mottle, $175. Not many pieces are found in this country. *** Q: I have some U.S. postage stamps of 1 cent and a series of stamps featuring American presidents. Where can I sell them? -- Josie, Goodyear, Arizona A: You are near Phoenix, where there are dozens of excellent coin and stamp dealers for you to contact. I suggest you get two or three opinions. One of the better price guides is The Krause-Minkus Standard Catalogue of U.S. Stamps, edited by Fred Baumann and published by Krause Books. *** Q: I have an unopened bottle of Coors beer with a paper label. My dad told me it was bought in 1950. I've been offered $25 for it. Should I take it? -- Steve, Colorado A: I found your bottle referenced in the second edition of Warman's Bottles Field Guide by Michael Polak. Polak believes your bottle is worth in the $110 to $150 range. *** Q: I have a cast-iron stove that I bought in California about 30 years ago. It is the Progress model manufactured by the Empire Stove Company of Chicago. How much should I sell it for? — Marlene, Rio Rancho, New Mexico
***
A: One of the better sources for antique stoves is Richard Richardson, owner of the Good Time Stove Company, P.O. Box 306, Goshen, MA 01032. Check out his webpage at www.antiquestorves.net. Richardson buys, sells and restores antique stoves and kitchen ranges.

Q: Back in May you featured a letter from a woman in Illinois who had an early edition of the Book of Mormon. Could you please put me in contact with her so I can purchase it? — David, Buckeye, Arizona A: It is my policy to not share the names and addresses of people who contact this column. This is for security reasons. So I won't be tempted, as soon as I answer a letter, it goes into my shredder. I can't help you. *** Q: I have a sketch done by Chester Gould, cartoonist and creator of Dick Tracy. It is signed twice by Gould. Would it be of value to a collector? — Gene, Rio Rancho, New Mexico A: Contact "Autographs for Sale." The business is bonded and will give you an expert opinion. Contact is 858-3847057. SENSE OF SMELL, TASTE LIKELY GONE FOR GOOD DEAR DR. ROACH: I am an 86-year-old male who unfortunately lost my sense of smell and, to a large degree, my sense of taste as a result of taking fluticasone propionate nasal spray (50 mcg, one spray in each nostril once a day). This drug was prescribed by my doctor. After finding out that I could not smell fresh coffee even when I put my face over the open container and sniffed, I knew I had a problem. I mentioned this to another doctor (the prescribing doctor had transferred), and he casually mentioned that that happens and that it could take a year to come back. Well, the year has come and gone, and I haven’t regained my sense of smell. The literature that accompanies this drug does mention that a possible side effect is the loss of the senses of smell and taste. But this comes only after reading through more than five columns of small prin. It may not seem like a big deal to be unable to smell the coffee, but I am also unable to smell natural gas, and living in a house with a furnace, hot water heater, clothes dryer and cooktop stove all powered by natural gas, it becomes a serious problem. I am hoping that you can give me some advice as to how I can restore my senses of smell and taste. — T.K. ANSWER: I certainly found the warning that fluticasone, like other nasal steroids, can cause alterations in taste and smell. However, I couldn’t find in the published literature a case of someone losing his or her sense of smell entirely from nasal steroids. Some blood pressure medicines have been known to do it, as can nutritional deficiencies, tumors and Sjogren’s syndrome. Exposure to some chemicals can cause temporary loss of smell. Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases sometimes cause loss of sense of smell.

Anytime the sense of smell is lost, most people notice a dramatic loss of taste as well: This may be because the aromas of food are the most important contributor to flavor. Unfortunately, after a year it is likely the loss will be permanent, and I don’t know of any way to bring it back. When researching your question, I found many references to studies that looked at fluticasone as a treatment for loss of sense of smell, which gives further evidence to the unfortunate and unusual apparent cause in your case. It worries me that your new doctor was so casual about this loss: It IS a big issue, and it sounds like he may not have evaluated you for other possible causes. *** DR. Healthy Gut from Eating Plants Prevents Chronic Diseases A diet high in fiber from plant-based foods can enhance the activity and composition of the gut microbiota. According to a recent article published in Practical Diabetology, a diet high in whole grains, legumes, fruits, and vegetables can reduce inflammation and prevent obesity and diabetes by enhancing the growth of healthy bacteria. A diet high in fat and animal products can lead to overgrowth of bacteria that cause inflammation and increase the risk of diabetes and certain types of cancer. Other healthy lifestyles choices such as exercising, getting enough sleep, and managing stress can also help. However, most experts agree that nutrition plays the most prominent role in improving gut health.
Grains Protect Against Heart Disease Consumption of both refined and whole grains helped reduce weight, blood pressure, and total and LDL cholesterol among overweight and obese patients, according to a study published in the Journal of Nutrition. Researchers compared heart disease risk factors in 40 participants on either a whole-grain diet, including rice, wheat, and oats, or a refined-grain diet. While both groups saw health improvements, decreased diastolic blood pressure was three times greater in the whole-grain group, compared to the refined-grain group. Researchers suspect similar dietary interventions may prove effective for hypertension prevention and lower mortality risks for heart disease. PLAY PASSPORT BOOK FOR PRESCHOOLERS When you hit the road this summer, your preschooler will enjoy putting "play pieces" on colorful pages of his own passport book to become familiar with who and what he will see on the trip. Upon arrival at each location, validate a page ... for instance, Grandma could sign and date "her" page when he arrives.
HERE'S WHAT YOU'LL NEED: —An empty cardboard food box approximately 6-by-8 inches, such as a Cream of Wheat or Minute Rice box —Clear plastic or tin mint box (approximately 4 inches by 2 1/2 inches) —Construction paper —Self-sticking Velcro dots —Markers, crayons —Glue —Scissors, ruler and hole punch —Pipe cleaners —Travel brochures, and small photos of your child and people you will visit.
HERE'S THE FUN: 1. Repurpose the box into the spine and front and back cover of the book. An adult should cut off the two long side panels and the top of the box. Leave the bottom of the box intact to become the spine. 2. Lay the book cover in front of you with the spine to the left. Measure in to the center of the front, 4 1/2 inches from the spine. Draw a vertical line as a guide for cutting off the right side of the front cover. You have a book on the left and extra space on the right side of the back cover,
where you may glue the box for storing play pieces. 3. Punch two holes in the spine, 1-inch from the top and bottom edges. Cut paper to fit inside, adding an extra inch to allow the paper to be folded and fit into the spine. Decorate each page with a drawing or cutouts from travel brochures of a place you will visit during your trip. Punch holes in the pages to match up with holes in the spine. Pull a pipe cleaner through the holes in the pages and book spine, and twist to secure the pages. 4. For each page, create a "play piece" small enough to store in the small box, such as a cutout photo of Grandma or the Statue of Liberty. Stick a Velcro dot on the back of each piece. Place the corresponding Velcro dot by the image that corresponds with the play piece. For example, your child would eventually attach Grandma's photo to the page with a drawing of her house. Glue your child's picture on the inside cover, and add name, date and place of birth. Paint and decorate the cover to resemble a real passport.

SUMMER-PROOF YOUR SKIN As the sun shines hotter, brighter and longer, it's important to consider all of the ways you can protect your skin. No matter what race you may be, if exposed for a long enough period of time, your skin is susceptible to sun damage, including premature aging, wrinkling and skin cancers. That's why it's important to wear protective clothing and apply the right sunscreen for your skin type, with protection against both types of damaging ultraviolet rays: UVA and UVB. There's also a way to protect your skin from the inside by eating vegetables, fruits and nuts. Dr. Paul Talalay, a professor of pharmacology and molecular sciences, says that eating your vegetables "isn't a substitute for sunscreen, but the protection you get won't wash off in the pool." A sunburn is a type of inammation, and diet has a tremendous impact on inammation in the body. Eating an anti-inammatory diet is one way to protect your skin from the inside. This diet also includes foods that you should avoid, like processed foods and sugar. While chronic exposure to UV rays is the most predictive factor for skin diseases, studies have found that inammation, oxidative stress and DNA damage all play an important role in determining how extensive the damage from the sun can be. Here are some foods that will help your skin ďŹ ght sun damage and improve your health year-round: Olive Oil — High in vitamin E and polyphenols, a daily dose of unheated, cold-pressed olive oil can help protect your skin from UV rays. Basil — This herb contains the antioxidant zeaxanthin, which helps protect your eyes by ďŹ ltering UV light from the retina.

Tomatoes and Watermelon — Both are at their avorful best in the summer. They contain the antioxidant lycopene, which studies have shown decreases the risk of skin cancer while increasing your skin's protection from the sun by 33 percent! Broccoli and Apples — This duo contains the highest concentration of polyphenols. Broccoli also helps ďŹ ght inammation and contains a sulphorane, a compound that helps to safeguard skin against UV light. An apple a day is a delicious way to protect your skin. Spinach — This power-paced green vegetable is loaded with vitamin E, anti-inammatory compounds and omega-3 fatty acids, including alpha-linolenic acid. It's also high in B vitamins. Walnuts — They are high in omega-3 fatty acids, which have anti-inammatory properties. These can protect your heart and skin by helping to ďŹ ght off free radicals, which can result from overexposure to UV rays. A diet rich in omega-3s could help cut your risk of melanoma, the most dangerous type of skin cancer, in half! Carrots and Sweet Potatoes — Orange-colored vegetables contain caroteniods. These nutrients build up on the skin, helping protect it from sun damage. Green Tea — This infusion contains polyphenols: plantbased compounds that help regulate inammation, oxidative stress and the immune system. Research shows that drinking at least one cup of green tea per day can lower the risk of certain types of skin cancer by 30 percent. Dark Chocolate — Eating dark chocolate with at least 60 percent cocoa can make the skin 25 percent less sensitive to the sun. This recipe for summertime spinach, watermelon and carrot salad is packed with the anti-inammatory, skin-protecting ingredients you need to safeguard your skin from the inside out!

Amazing Plants
SNOWDONIA HAWKWEED The Snowdonia Hawkweed may well be the rarest plant on Earth. Turn your attention to this scarce plant found only in Wales. • There is only one known surviving specimen of the hierachium snowdoniense. The plant is endemic to Wales, meaning that is the only geographic area where it has been found. Although it was first discovered in 1892 by a Welsh botanist, it wasn’t given “species” status until 1955. At that point, the plant hadn’t even been seen for two years, and even then, it only grew on seven rocky mountain ledges in Snowdonia. • The north Wales mountainous region known as Snowdonia has been a national park covering 823 square miles (2,130 sq. km) since 1951. It’s named for the highest mountain in Wales, Mount Snowdon, which has a height of 3,560 feet (1,085 m). More people climb Mount Snowdon than other a aany y ot e British t s mountain, ou ta , with more than 444,000 44,000 people scaling it last year. The peak was used by Sir Edmund Hillary to train for his 1953 ascent of Mount unt Everest. The Welsh word d for the mountain is Eryri,, which h translates “Highlands.” nds.” It’s one of the wettestt spots in the United Kingdom, ngdom, with an average rainfall of 176.1 inches (4,473 73 mm) a year. • There’s nothingg unusuall about the Snowdonia onia hawkhead’s appearance. It’s simply a golden yellow rosette tte with spearshaped leaves on a shaggy stalk. The base of the flower ower is surrounded by black velvety leaves eaves on a slender 11.8-inch (30-cm) stem. m. It seems to like rocky, north-facing cliffs.
• After the 1953 sighting, there were no hawkweeds spotted until 1967. It was believed the plant had become extinct. A huge increase in the amount of sheep grazing in the area was thought to be the reason, as sheep seem to love the taste of these little plants. An extensive search was launched in 2000, but the team combed the mountainside to no avail. • Another explanation has been offered for the hawkweed’s near extinction, that of the increase in acid rain, which could have caused soil acidification in this rainy area. • Botanists had given up on finding any more hawkweed specimens, when, in 2002, one lone surviving plant clinging to life on a rocky outcrop of a mountainside in the Cwm Idwal National Nature Reserve was discovered by a Welsh team of botanists in the same aarea ea as itt was first st discovered d scove ed and the same as its last sighting in 1967. It wasn’t known know if the newly-discovgrowing there for many years ered plant had been growi or if it had sprouted from buried seed. • Sheep ggrazing was immediately eliminated from the nature elimin reserve where the plant was found, in hopes of promoting the recovery of the hawkweed. wee The botanists took two flower heads containing about 50 seeds back with them to attempt cultivations at the National Botivati tanic Garden of Wales. Twenty-six seedlings were cultivated se from that take, take with a restocking program as a possible possib proposal. Five flower heads were left on o the plant, hoping the wind-dispersed plant would self-propagate through th seeds. Falling rock presents a natural unpredictable risk to the one surviving plant’s survival.
