A DISASTER KINDLES • It had been a hot, dry summer followed by a hot, dry fall. October 8, 1871 was a hot, dry, windy day in Chicago. Wagon driver Daniel Sullivan went out to visit neighbors Patrick and Catherine O’Leary, but found them already in bed at 8:00p.m. He saw ames coming out of the barn behind their house.

• Sullivan ran into the barn to try to save the livestock inside. But three tons of hay delivered that day caught ďŹ re. Then the shed next to the barn caught ďŹ re. It contained two tons of coal and a huge mound of kindling. The O’Leary’s house began to smolder. • Chicago was a ammable city. City lots were small and buildings were crowded. Barns and sheds, stables, outhouses, and cottages were surrounded by paint factories, lumberyards, distilleries, gasworks, mills, furniture manufacturers, warehouses, and coal distributors. Wooden roads and sidewalks connected everything. On the day the ďŹ re started, 55 miles of wooden streets and 600 miles of wooden sidewalks laced the 23,000 acres of the city.

• As the O’Leary family began ďŹ ghting the ďŹ re, neighbor William Lee ran to Goll’s Drugstore a few blocks away to pull the neighborhood ďŹ re alarm. But Goll said a ďŹ re engine had just passed by, so obviously someone else had already pulled some other ďŹ re alarm. He refused to give Lee the key to the alarm box. Lee ran back to see if his own property was burning yet. Only when another man ran up to Goll yelling that the ďŹ re was spreading fast did Goll consent to pull the ďŹ re alarm.

• Mathias Schaffer was on duty at the Courthouse Lookout post that Sunday night. Some visitors pointed out smoke in the distance, but Schaffer thought it was the smoldering remnants of a huge ďŹ re that had occurred the previous day. Not until he saw huge ames did he consider that he might be wrong. Schaffer missed the location of the ďŹ re and pulled alarm box #342, which sent the ďŹ re engines rushing to a position a mile away from the ďŹ re. When Schaffer discovered his error, he instructed his assistant to pull the correct alarm box - #319 - but he refused to do so for fear it would confuse the situation. The ďŹ remen stationed near the ďŹ re saw the ames on the horizon and assumed that since they had not been notiďŹ ed, they were not needed. ‌turn the page for more

The Chicago Fire (continued):

• Fires were common in Chicago. The city had recently updated its ďŹ re alarm system and it was considered to be one of the most advanced in the nation. Many ďŹ re alarm boxes were placed around the city. Each ďŹ re station had a lookout who constantly searched the neighborhood for signs of smoke. In the high cupola of the courthouse, another lookout searched the entire horizon of the city for smoke. Whenever a ďŹ re was spotted, the location was telegraphed to the ďŹ re station nearest the ames. • When the ďŹ rst two engines ďŹ nally arrived on the ďŹ re, one - the oldest engine in the eet - was unable to throw water very far and the other could not muster much water pressure. The more powerful engines were either still in their berths or searching for a phantom ďŹ re a mile away. A valve gave out, then a hose blew. Many of the ďŹ remen were already exhausted from working on the ďŹ re that occurred the previous night. One ďŹ reman raced to Goll’s Drugstore to send the signal that would call for more engines. But he, in his haste, forgot the signal. He pulled the alarm only once instead of the agreed upon signal of four times. Schaffer and his assistant heard the alarm, but ďŹ gured it was just another passerby pulling the alarm to signal the same ďŹ re that engines had already been sent to. Not until 10:00p.m. did the assistant pull another ďŹ re alarm, and once more it was the wrong one. The right one was pulled at 10:30p.m. Meanwhile, the wind was picking up speed. • The steeple of St. Paul’s ignited. That lifted a shower of sparks high into the air, making it easy for the ďŹ re to

jump the river, carried by winds at 30 mph. Whirlwinds of ďŹ re sucked up burning embers and spread them widely. Panic ensued. People loaded their belongings into carts to evacuate. When the wagons got stuck in the trafďŹ c jam, they were abandoned. This clogged the trafďŹ c ow and ďŹ lled streets with ammable items. Bridges across the river rapidly became impassable. They caught ďŹ re, burned, and fell into the river, preventing people from escaping in boats. A train car full of kerosene exploded. The courthouse burned down and the ďŹ re bell crashed to the ground. • At 3:00a.m. Sunday night, the waterworks burned down. Now the city was without water. Without water, the only way to stop the ďŹ re was by using explosives. • Monday morning, secretaries, businessmen, and shop girls headed into the city, unaware of the problem. There was no radio or telephone in those days. The â€œďŹ reproofâ€? newspaper building had burned down. Telegram was the only means of communication. • Throughout all of Monday, Monday night, and Tuesday, the ďŹ re burned without mercy. Around 11:00a.m. Tuesday, it began to rain. The ďŹ re was extinguished. • A swath of the city four miles long and one mile wide was in ruins. 17,500 buildings were burned and 73 miles of streets had been destroyed. • A string of 50 relief trains was already arriving by Tuesday morning. Morgues were set up in burned-out buildings. Demand for carpenters and bricklayers skyrocketed as the city slowly rebuilt itself, and laborers who had previously been out of work now found themselves earning good wages. Just three months later, there were 6,000 shanties, 2,000 wood frame buildings, and 500

brick or stone structures rising from the ashes. Still, 20 years later there were blackened buildings standing in ruins. • Another ďŹ re swept through the city in 1874, destroying many of the newly built wooden structures. Only then were ďŹ re regulations imposed, requiring the use of brick or stone. • No one ever found out what caused the ďŹ re. The O’Learys were asleep when it happened. Still, they were hounded until they left town. Their home was one of the few left standing. • Mrs. O’Leary’s cow did not kick over a lantern, starting the Chicago ďŹ re. A newspaper reporter admitted he made up the story to liven up his account. Chicago’s city council ofďŹ cially exonerated the O’Leary family – and the cow – in 1997.

The Bette Davis/Joan Crawford feud allegedly began in 1945, when Crawford was dropped from her MGM contract after 25 years, and was able to talk Warner Brothers studio head Jack Warner into letting her be "Mildred Pierce" (1945). Her first film of a four-picture deal for Warners was the non-paying benefit film "Hollywood Canteen" (Bette Davis' pet project). Davis considered "Mildred Pierce" the one that got away," and she felt Crawford stole it from her, along with the Oscar she would have won for it.

HOLLYWOOD -- As producer Ryan Murphy was getting over the disappointment of his miniseries "Feud: Bette and Joan" winning only two Emmys (for hair and makeup) out of 18 nominations, his thoughts must have turned to the lawsuit filed by two-time Oscar-winning actress, Olivia de Havilland.

We fix All types of Electric Motors

Only one actress depicted in "Feud: Bette and Joan" is alive today (Crawford died in 1977 at 71, and Davis died in 1989 at 81). To add narrative to the eight-part mini-series, producers used Oscar-winners Catherine Zeta-Jones as Olivia de Havilland and Kathy Bates as Joan Blondell (who died in 1979 at 73). They never expected de Havilland, at 101 years old and living in France, to file a lawsuit. "The series made me look like a gossip who exploited others for her own gain, and despite being the only living person portrayed in the show, I wasn't consulted," de Havilland said. We checked the book "Bette & Joan: The Divine Feud," by Shaun Considine, published in 1989, for which he had interviewed both Davis and Crawford, and couldn't find any quotes attributed to de Havilland as depicted. Because of her advanced age, Olivia has asked the court for and been granted a speedy trial. On Nov. 27, "Feud's" lawyers will have to produce evidence proving De Havil-

What happened to Simon Baker, star of "The Mentalist" (2008-2015)? He returned to his native Australia when the show ended, took time off and began preparing to direct himself in the upcoming '70s surfing drama "Breath," which premiered at the Toronto Film Festival to good reviews. Universal Pictures was disappointed in Tom Cruise's recent "Mummy" film, which cost $195 million to make and grossed $408 million (a little better than break even in Hollywood terms), especially since his newest release, "American Made," grossed $34 million of its $80 million cost before even opening in the U.S. Universal was hoping his star power would kick off its slate of horror remakes, including its next, "The Bride of Frankenstein," and more Cruise "Mummy" films. Tom loved his "Mummy," but he loves being "American Made" more, and so do most moviegoers! (c) 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.

I just got word that it has been greenlighted for a pilot, which will star "Liars" co-stars Sasha Pieterse and Janel Parrish as Ali and Mona, respectively. "Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists" will be based on the book series "The Perfectionists," written by "Liars" scribe Sara Shepard. But nothing in Beacon Heights is as it appears. The stress of needing to be perfect leads to the town's first murder. Behind every Perfectionist is a secret, a lie and a needed alibi."

A: As season two of the cult Netflix hit gets closer to its Oct. 27 premiere of nine new episodes, I can tell you that it has been renewed for a third season, with series creators/writers/directors/executive producers the Duffer Brothers stating that they'd like to conclude the series with its fourth season. And while Netflix has yet to renew the show for a fourth and final season, I have no doubt that it will happen. I also can tell you that series co-stars Joe Keery and Noah Schnapp -- who play Steve and Will, respectively -- have been upped to series regulars, so we'll be seeing a lot more of them. an end. But it doesn't have to be, according to energetic Karla Pankow and Elizabeth Millard, owners of popular Bossy Acres farm and regulars at our market. These organic farmers encourage us to bring "the land" into our homes this fall, and "keep farming" with kids by planting windowsill gardens of low maintenance and fun-togrow pea shoots.

GROW TASTY PEA SHOOTS IN WINDOWSILL GARDEN One of my summer's "bests" has been a weekly bike ride to the new farmer's market in our neighborhood. There are so many things to like about the ritual -- the anticipation of that first bite of a buttery fresh croissant from the baker, chitchatting with neighbors and sampling the colorful produce and products from local farmers.

We've already taken the challenge at our house, and we're enthused by the results of our edible garden. We enjoy the nutrient-rich and tasty shoots in a tuna or egg sandwich for added crunch, in Asian stir-fries and as an artistic garnish on a cup of soup. Thanks to Elizabeth's suggestion, I like to arrange a bed of shoots on a plate and set a fried egg on top. Here's what you'll need for a 6- by 8-inch garden: Here's the fun: -- A scant 1/4 cup dry pea seeds such as snow peas --1 glass jar

1. Soak seeds in a jar filled with water for a day to help them germinate faster.

--1 repurposed 6-inch-by-8-inch plastic deli clamshell container with holes in the bottom or similar container that fits your windowsill. Make your own holes for drainage if necessary.

2. Let your kids scoop the potting soil into the container 2/3 full. Water until moist. Sprinkle the soaked peas evenly on the soil. Lightly cover with more soil and spritz with water.

--1 drainage tray

3. Place in a warm room covered with a kitchen towel. Water now and then to keep soil moist. Avoid overwatering to prevent mold.

--Potting soil, preferably organic. Now in late September, spring radishes have made way for squash, a clue that the growing season is coming to

4. Watch for sprouts to appear within 2-3 days. Remove cover and place in a sunny window. The sprouts might look yellow initially, but turn green and grow quickly in the sunshine. The greenery eventually will fill the container, spill out and flourish. Water regularly. 5. Harvest pea shoots as needed when they are 4-6 inches long. To encourage new growth, clip them near the base of a stem above a leaf. Grow this lovely garden for another three weeks or so. When it is finished, discard soil and start a new crop.

The senior pass (full name: America the Beautiful -- The National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Pass) is a bargain, providing admission to recreation areas run by the National Park Service, U.S. Fish & Wildlife, U.S. Forest Service and more. If you don't want to pay the $80 all at once, consider a one-year pass for $20. Do that for four years, and you can convert it to a lifetime pass.

NATIONAL PARK DISCOUNT IS STILL A GREAT DEAL If you'd planned to pick up a couple of senior passes to the national parks as part of your autumn leaf-peeping travels, you'll need to increase your budget. The lifetime access pass has gone from $10 to a whopping $80.

al

There still are ways to visit our parks without breaking the bank. Some parks only charge a few dollars for admission. Others, like the national monuments, are free. Those that do charge have some free days designated each year. If you're taking a trip soon, here's a warning: The parks service is inundated with requests for passes, and you might not get yours before you leave. However, print out the confirmation you receive and take that with you, as well as a picture ID. If you're planning to buy your pass

at the recreation site, phone ahead; many have run out of passes. To buy online, go to yourpassnow.com. You'll pay an extra $10 processing fee. If you are permanently disabled, you can get a free pass with documentation. If you already have the $10 lifetime pass, you won't have to pay for a new one; you're grandfathered in ... unless you lose the one you now have. For more information, go online to www.nps.gov, where you'll learn about parks by state, and locations to buy a pass. (c) 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.

he was merely professing his faith.) Trump says it's disrespectful to the flag and the veterans who served this nation, and while I agree with that sentiment, it isn't making me tune out. Players and veterans alike seem to agree on one thing: They should be allowed to take the knee if they want to. Veterans fought for our constitution and way of life. They didn't expressly go to war to defend Francis Scott Key's signature work. "The Star Spangled Banner" was written by Key while he was in prison, and as our president will surely tell you, that means he's a loser.

AS THE GRIDIRON BURNS This isn't the first time politics invaded the football world. Teddy Roosevelt loved the game and helped start the NCAA while he urged rule makers to ban the controversial "flying wedge" (controversial because it KILLED players). Dwight Eisenhower played football for Army, and Richard Nixon played on the practice squad for Whittier College (more on that later). JFK made the JV squad at Harvard, Gerald Ford was an All-American center for Michigan and Ronald Reagan played on scholarship at Eureka College. Also, he played the "the Gipper" in a Hollywood movie. With the notable exception of Nixon (of course), nobody has meddled more with football than our current dear leader. Donald Trump never played the game, but he used to own the coolest USFL team -- the New Jersey Generals -- in the early '80s. There he was famous for threatening to fire the coach if he ever used fullback Maurice Carthon on a goal-line play, before suing the NFL for being a monopoly --- a case he won, receiving $3 in damages -- before taking his ball and going home. Now, he has opened up a new front: affront over players who kneel during "The Star Spangled Banner." (Incidentally, nobody complained when Tim Tebow took a knee, but I guess that's because he wasn't protesting anything,

Our president doesn't like anthem writers who get captured. And while he seems to think that his message will somehow unite us, it actually has been one of the most divisive stances any president has ever taken. Football never liked it when Nixon got involved with football, either. He was known to draw up "tricky Dick" plays for the local pro team that were never used. In 1969, he declared that he would decide who the No. 1 college team was, to the delight of nobody. But it was his speech, delivered on a football field to Whittier College grads, that contains a credo that resonates even more today than back then. "When I speak of firmness ... we must have firmness without belligerency," Nixon said. "It's very easy, I can assure you, and sometimes very tempting when you are insulted to strike back with the same words. But we must avoid engaging in a war of words which would heat up the international atmosphere to the point that we would have a nuclear disaster. And a nation that is strong, a nation that is confident that it is right, does not have to resort to returning insult with insult. We can be confident of ourselves." I'm confident that this impasse will pass soon, and we'll just go back to watching adults play games again where they're meant to be: on the field. When that happens, America will be truly blessed. Mark Vasto is a veteran sportswriter who lives in New Jersey. (c) 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.

Pet owner networking apps also are popular, allowing neighbors and friends to connect with each other through their pets. They can serve as places to ask for help in finding a lost pet, essentially sending out an APB to other owners and thereby reaching much farther than just posting "lost pet" fliers around the neighborhood. Adding any of these products or apps can give you greater control over locating your pets should they get out.

BEYOND MICROCHIPPING DEAR PAW'S CORNER: I'm fine with microchipping my pets. I have a 2-year-old collie mix, "Bard," and a 5-year-old cat, "Millie," and both are chipped. But I worry that if they get out of the house and get lost, I'll have to rely on strangers getting them to a veterinarian or shelter to have their chip scanned. I'd like to take finding my pets into my own hands. -- Carl G., Madison, Wisconsin

DO INDOOR CATS NEED ALL THOSE SHOTS?

DEAR CARL: With the rise of the smartphone and an increase in small, wearable technology, you can take a more active role in finding your pets. A microchip is an important component because unlike a collar, it won't fall off, making it the best backup if your pet is lost.

DEAR PAW'S CORNER: Our cat's paws never touch the ground outside. "Dale" is an indoor cat, through and through. He doesn't even try to go outdoors, although he does like to watch the world go by from his perch in the front-room window. With that in mind, why does he have to get all of those vaccinations? Most are to protect him from diseases acquired from other cats, like FIV. He's never going to see another cat, so why should I protect him from a disease he likely won't get? -- Budget-Minded Papa in Chicago

However, advanced pet technology is out there, and a huge number of pet owners are taking advantage of it. The Los Angeles Times reported that 43 percent of dog owners now own an electronic tracking device, based on an APPA survey.

DEAR PAPA: Vaccinating your cat against "improbable" diseases, ones that he seems unlikely to be exposed to, may seem like a waste of money. However, vaccines protect against the possibility of the improbable actually happening.

Tracking collars like the LinkAPC sync with a smartphone app that reports your dog's location on demand. It includes a fitness tracker. That collar will run you almost $150, but there are budget trackers like the TrackR Bravo, a small device which costs just under $30 and attaches to your dog's collar.

Under normal circumstances, Dale may never be at risk of contracting feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV), rabies, feline leukemia or other illnesses. But we can't see the future, and things don't always stay normal.

FRIENDS OF THE STIRLING ROAD LIBRARY ARE SPONSORING A BOOK FAIR Fiction, Non Fiction, Children’s Books, CD’s and other treasures! $3.00 a bag (we supply the bag!) Special offers on Coffee Table Books, Collectibles and Encyclopedias. Stirling Road Library

Let's say that you and Dale move to a new home. There's a chance that during the move, Dale could escape from his carrier, get confused or lost and be stuck outdoors for a few days until you find him. Or, perhaps a natural disaster occurs where you and Dale have to evacuate, and he must be housed temporarily around other pets. Having all of his required and recommended shots will help keep Dale healthy in situations like this. If cost is a concern, look for lower-cost vaccination events, often called shot clinics, where you can get Dale's shots up to date for significantly less than the veterinarian may charge.

glass was, so I looked up the information on the internet. I'm concerned that the glass color is due to radiation emission, and I wonder about its safety. One of the pulls has a crack. Does this increase radiation emission? I have grandchildren who visit frequently and have relegated this piece of furniture to a little-used room. I'm considering selling this stand.

BEFORE BOBBLEHEADS, THERE WERE 'NODDERS' Two types of collectors bid for a porcelain figure of a well-dressed French couple that was sold at a Southern auction in 2016. A 14-inch-high Asian sorcerer and his companion wearing brightly decorated clothes were "nodders." The heads moved and looked as if they were nodding "yes" when the figures were moved. Nodders were first made in China in the late 1600s, often showing a smiling, agreeable Buddha. By Victorian times in England, toys were made with nodding heads, as well as decorative porcelain figures of all kinds that could nod "yes" or "no" or even have hands playing a piano. Because of the nodders' entertainment as well as decorative value, they were collected in the 1900s. Many new and fake nodders appeared on the market. The second group of bidders probably collected porcelains by Jacob Petit's company, a French firm that made many decorative porcelains from the early 1800s to 1862. The successful bid for the nodder was $562.

A: You can test the knobs on your stand to see if they are Vaseline glass by holding one under a black light. Vaseline glass will glow a neon greenish-yellow color because it contains a small amount of uranium dioxide. You don't have to worry, though, because they are not exposing you or your grandchildren to harmful amounts of radiation. Even though the knobs may contain very small amounts of uranium, it is less than what you get from the atmosphere and things that occur naturally every day. It is safe to use your stand. Radiation won't leak out of a crack in the glass. Q: In the 1930-1950 period, would Minton dinnerware normally be found in middle-class or upper-middle-class homes? Where might it have fit in the dinnerware hierarchy, compared to Royal Doulton, Spode or Wedgwood? A: Minton dinnerware was owned by royalty, the wealthy and the upper middle class. In some homes, it was the "good" china used only on special occasions. Minton was made in the Staffordshire region of England beginning in 1796. It became part of the Royal Doulton Tableware Group in 1968. The brand is now part of WWRD Holdings. Minton china is no longer made. *** Tip: Wear cotton gloves when cleaning any type of metal. Oils in the skin will leave a mark.

A lucky bidder bought this 19th-century French "nodder" by Jacob Petit for $562. Each head has a long, heavy neck that rests on the shoulders of the figure. It is inserted into the figure's neck hole and swings back and forth, making the head "nod" when touched.

*** Q: Two years ago, I bought an American Federal one-drawer stand that was made in about 1815. The description said the drawer has "rare Vaseline glass pulls that appear to be original." I had no idea what Vaseline

* Got your cellphone wet? Try the rice trick first. Power down if possible and remove the protective cover, then fill a zipper-top plastic baggie with plain uncooked rice. Insert your phone and seal the bag, making sure that all parts of the phone are surrounded by the rice. Let it sit for 12 hours so the rice can draw the moisture from your device. Then try to power up. * "Want to seal your sugar bag (or any all-plastic bag)? Fold over the top at least an inch, and cover the fold with a strip of aluminum foil -- both sides. Lay the bag on its side. Iron the fold, which is trapped inside the foil. It melts the plastic inside. Let cool and remove the foil." -- R.Y. in Kentucky * Need to get into a crevice for cleaning? DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a retired engineer, and engineers like solving problems. I find that people have difficulty swallowing medications because swallowing a gulp of water is an unnatural act when compared with everyday unnoticed swallowing, and that people are taking too small a sip of water, so they feel the pills, which can trigger a gag reflex. The solution is to swallow a large sip of water without pills to prepare the mind and body for the relatively rare swallowing process that will follow. Then, take a large sip of water and swallow with pills. -- R.E. ANSWER: As someone who has studied physics, if not engineering, the small sip of water lubricates the esophagus, so pills are less likely to be stuck. I have always recommended a small sip followed by a large gulp, for a different reason from yours. As far as specific positions, some people seem to do better with chin up, others with chin down. Taking a pill with some food or applesauce (or something of similar texture) helps many people. Practicing with something (a breath mint or M&M) can help you find what works best for you. Tepid or even warm water helps some.

ANSWER: "Spinal stenosis" is the term we use to describe compression of the spinal cord or nerve roots by bony structures in the spine. This may be a result of arthritis, skeletal disease and many other conditions. One common finding is difficulty after walking, causing someone to want to sit or lie down. I often see people with spinal stenosis who lean over while walking, as though they are walking into a stiff wind. Many sufferers can walk for prolonged periods with a shopping cart, because the leaning-over position relieves the pressure on the nerves.

*** DEAR DR. ROACH: A dear friend has been diagnosed with spinal stenosis. She's 85. She tried a cortisone shot, with very short-lived relief, and physical therapy, to no avail. She's been prescribed pain pills, which cause her to sleep more than you'd expect for her age. Her doctor seems to be out of options. I read about laser treatment for this area. Do you think this might help, or do you have other ideas? -- M.R.

Surgery for spinal stenosis can be challenging, and in an 85-year-old, the risk of complications is higher. However, given her symptoms and lack of response to nonsurgical therapy, consulting with a surgeon may be appropriate. There may still be additional medical therapies she hasn't tried before doing so. I am not a surgeon, and only a surgeon can appropriately choose the tools for a given surgery. However, having looked over the research in this area, there is no

reviewed 13 studies that compared vegetarian with non-vegetarian diets and diabetes incidence rates. Results showed that those who followed vegetarian diets had less diabetes risk, with a further reduction in those who followed vegan diets. Researchers attribute the reduced risk to improved insulin sensitivity, lower BMIs, improved HbA1c levels, and increased consumption of whole grains, fruits, and vegetables.

MIDLIFE OBESITY INCREASES ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE RISK Obesity increases Alzheimer’s disease risk, according to a study in Molecular Psychiatry. Researchers studied 1,394 participants of the Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging (BLSA) and tracked their weight at age 50 and evidence of Alzheimer’s later on. The results indicate that with an increase in weight, onset of Alzheimer’s disease occurred 6.7 months earlier than when compared to those who were not obese. Autopsies and scans also showed higher body weights resulted in more Alzheimer’s-specific deposits in the brain. This study suggests that lifestyle changes earlier in life can influence the course of disease.

VEGETARIAN DIETS LOWER RISK FOR DIABETES Vegetarian diets lower risk for diabetes, according to a meta-analysis published in Nutrients. Researchers

WHAT’S CONTRIBUTING TO OBESITY? OILS, MEAT, CHEESE, ICE CREAM An increase in childhood obesity reflects increased intake of oils, meat, cheese, and frozen desserts, according to a new PCRM study that will be published next month in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. Neal Barnard, M.D., looked at food availability data maintained by the U.S. Department of Agriculture from 1909 to 2007. Oil intake increased from 35 pounds to more than 86 pounds per person per year. Meat intake rose from 123 pounds to more than 200 pounds per person per year (with a greater than six fold increase in chicken and turkey intake alone). In 2007, Americans also ate nine times more cheese and 16 times more frozen desserts than they did in 1909. Since 1970 (no prior data available), sweetener consumption doubled, mostly from carbonated beverages. Other long-term trends include decreased grain consumption, decreased fluid

milk consumption, and increased fruit (mostly juices) and vegetable intake. Breaking Medical News is a service of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine 5100 Wisconsin Ave., Ste. 400 Washington, DC 20016 202-686-2210

Find All the Fun and Games Answers on Page 14! • In the produce aisle of the supermarket, only bananas and grapes outsell tomatoes.

TOMATO • The tomato is a member of the highly poisonous nightshade family, and its leaves contain poisons. Because of this, the tomato was long considered to be a deadly vegetable. • In 1830, Col. Robert Johnson of Salem, New Jersey, declared that he would eat— in public— not just one tomato, but a whole basket of tomatoes. Public reaction was loud. Doctors predicted that he would suffer fevers, appendicitis, and frothing at the mouth. If he did survive, he would certainly get cancer.

• Americans consume 30 pounds (13.6 kg) of tomatoes per person, per year. Over half of that is in the form of processed tomato products such as ketchup and tomato sauce. Salsa recently outpaced ketchup in sales. • The largest worldwide producer of tomatoes is China, followed by USA, Turkey, and India. • California produces 96% of the tomatoes processed in the U.S.

• On the specified day, over 2,000 spectators showed up to watch Col. Johnson commit certain suicide. As he devoured tomato after tomato, women fainted and the town band played dirges. When the basket was empty, the crowd cheered and the band changed their tune to a victory march. The tide had turned for the tomato, and by 1835 they could be found in most markets. Still, as late as 1860, a popular ladies book warned that tomatoes should be cooked for at least 3 hours before being consumed, to avoid “acid blood.” • As the ripened ovary of a seed plant, the tomato is technically a fruit. However, after the tomato went to court in 1893, it became a vegetable by law: A 10% tariff was levied on vegetables but not on fruits, allowing tomatoes to enter the country duty-free. The customs collector decided tomatoes were vegetables, the importers sued, and the court decided it was indeed a vegetable in spite of botanical evidence to the contrary. • Tomatoes originated in Peru. The name comes from the Aztec “xitomatl,” which means “plump thing with a navel.”

• The heaviest tomato on record weighed in at 7 pounds 12 ounces (3.51 kg) grown by Gordon Graham of Edmond, Oklahoma in 1986. Gordon sliced the tomato to make sandwiches for 21 family members. A single tomato plant was once documented to have produced 16,897 tomatoes. • Tomatoes are a natural source of the antioxidant lycopene, which may help prevent heart disease. More lycopene is absorbed by the body from cooked tomatoes than from fresh tomatoes. A single 1/2 cup serving of canned tomatoes delivers three times the lycopene as is found in one raw tomato. • The highest concentration of vitamin C in tomatoes is in the jelly-like substance around the seeds. • Tomatoes sold in grocery stores are picked when green and ripened artificially by being surrounded with ethylene gas. That's why they don't taste as good as homegrown. The longer the fruit is on the vine, the better it tastes. It’s estimated that 94% of people who garden grow some tomatoes. • Superstition held that placing a ripe tomato on the mantel of a new house would bring prosperity. Since ripe tomatoes were hard to find in winter months, it became popular to make pin-cushions in the shape of a tomato and use that instead.
