• By 1930 they had designed a radio for cars. They ďŹ nished just before the Radio Manufacturers Association convention in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Paul Galvin drove there to advertise the new radio. He couldn’t afford to rent a booth. Instead, he parked on the curb outside the convention doors, cranked the radio up to full blast, and started working the crowd, with good success. • Now it was time to name the new company, so Paul created a name that started with a word that suggested movement, and then added the popular sufďŹ x ‘ola’ used in such well-known trade names as Victrola and Pianola. Today it’s a multi-national Fortune 500 electronics company: Motorola.

TECHNOLOGY (continued):

• In Tokyo, Akio Morita heard about the seminar. After World War II, he’d started up a firm repairing radios, and he designed a tape recorder. He scraped up the $25,000 fee, only to find that Japanese government would not allow so much money to leave the country. Forty other companies attended the seminar, among them Texas Instruments, who used the knowledge to produce the first transistor radio released in 1954. • Undaunted, Morita traveled to Bell Labs on his own in 1953, and convinced them to grant him a provisional license. The Japanese government was impressed with Morita’s industriousness and relented, allowing the license to go through. A year later the first Japanese transistor radio was released. Although Texas Instruments beat him to the market, Morita’s company made transistors commercially successful. • Morita based the name of his company on the Latin “sonus” which is the root of “sonic” and “sound.” Today the firm is one of the world’s largest conglomerates with annual revenues approaching $100 billion: Sony.

BETTER SOUND • Ray was born in 1933 and grew up in California. In 1949 he got a job with Ampex Corporation, improving tape recorders and developing the video tape recorder. He focused on finding ways to overcome the noise interference caused by cosmic X-rays, which cause an annoying hissing on magnetic tapes. • Ray realized that by separating recorded sound into two channels, he could strip unwanted noise while maintaining the clarity of the underlying music. • In 1966 he took a prototype to Decca Records, who were so impressed they bought his entire production run for the next six months. By the early 1970s, Ray had adapted the technology for the broadcast and motion picture industries. “Star Wars” was the first movie to use his noise-reduction system. • His company now has 650 employees. Nearly 30,000 movie theaters use his sound system, and his equipment is used to record every radio and TV performance in the world, as well as in car stereos, cassette players, and DVD players. The technology was dubbed with Ray’s last name: Dolby.

UNITED TECHNOLOGY • Harald was born in Denmark around the year 935 A.D.,

the son of King Gorm the Old. He grew up to become the ruler of Denmark, just like his dad. For a brief period he united Denmark, Norway, and Sweden under a single ruler: himself. He ruled until his son deposed him, and died around 986 A.D. • A thousand years later, a Swedish telecom corporation called Ericsson Mobile Communications decided that the world needed a new wireless networking standard to unite computers, cell phones, printers, and PDAs with cable-free communications capabilities. In 1998 Ericsson invited Nokia, Toshiba, IBM, and Intel to strategy meetings. They worked to develop a new low-power low-cost radio interface between computer accessories. Ericsson’s idea was to integrate them all in order to drive a single wireless standard into the industry. • The project was given a code-name of the English translation of Harald’s Danish last name, because it was uniting technologies just as Harald united countries. The logo is composed of the intertwined ancient runes for Harald’s initials, HB: Harald Bluetooth.

VIDEO GAMES • A Japanese businessman founded a playing card company in 1889 and named it after the Japanese words meaning “leave luck to heaven.” He handed the company down to his son-in-law, who handed it down to his son-in-law, who was named Hiroshi Yamauchi. • Hiroshi paid a visit to the largest playing card manufacturer in the U.S. He was shocked to find them operating in a tiny office. This convinced him he needed to expand his business beyond cards, because he wanted a big factory, not a small office. Hiroshi hired a man named Yokoi to oversee the assembly line. One day he saw Yokoi playing with an automatic hand-extender contraption, which he had manufactured in his spare time for fun. Hiroshi seized the opportunity, and the ‘Ultra Hand’ sold over a million units. Yokoi was put into product development. • In 1977 the firm hired Shigeru Miyamoto, whose talent was electronic games. Yokoi and Shigeru worked together to develop a ‘Color TV Game Machine’ which was one of the first video games on the market. In 1981 they had a hit with a game starring an ape, and that was followed by a game starring an Italian plumber who battles creatures in sewers. The firm grew and eventually became Japan’s third most valuable company, still named after the Japanese words for ‘leave luck to heaven’: Nintendo with the popular games called Donkey Kong and Mario Brothers.

Based on the last entry in the captain's log, the ship had been adrift for 11 days. * On Dec. 13, 1776, American Gen. Charles Lee leaves his army, riding in search of female sociability at Widow White's Tavern, even though Gen. George Washington repeatedly urged Lee to reinforce Washington's position on the Delaware River. British soldiers captured Lee at the tavern two days later. * On Dec. 2, 1777, Philadelphia housewife and nurse Lydia Darragh single-handedly saves the lives of Gen. George Washington and his Continental Army when she overhears the British planning a surprise attack. Darragh took notes, which she sewed into her coat before passing them onto American troops. * On Dec. 8, 1881, a fire at the luxurious Ring Theater in Vienna, Austria, kills at least 620 people and injures hundreds more. The fire started when a stagehand inadvertently lit some prop clouds hanging over the stage. * On Dec. 3, 1984, an explosion at a Union Carbide pesticide plant in Bhopal, India, leads to the worst industrial accident in history. It gave U.S. pilots the go-ahead to undertake combat missions against the Viet Cong as long as one Vietnamese national was aboard the aircraft for training purposes. * On Dec. 10, 1970, the defense opens its case in the murder trial of Lt. William Calley, a platoon leader in Vietnam. HOLLYWOOD -- As if witnessing the Harvey Weinstein scandals unfolding, now we are watching the decline of Kevin Spacey, as he receives fallout for alleged sexual harassment against a minor and many others. His Netflix series, "House of Cards," was canceled during shooting of its sixth season, and he's been cut from the 50th anniversary special of "The Carol Burnett Show." Spacey has completed three other projects. The Netflix film "Gore" (in which he plays American writer and public intellectual Gore Vidal), originally set for a November download, has been pulled, and Netflix has no plans to release it. Director Ridley Scott moved quickly to save "All the Money in the World" (mostly about John Paul Getty's heirs), with Spacey as Getty, starring Michelle Williams and Mark Wahlberg. Spacey worked 10 days, but in a first, Christopher Plummer has reshot all of Spacey's scenes, hopefully in time for the Dec. 22 opening. Spacey's third project, "Billionaire's Boys Club," starring Ansel Elgort, Taron Egerton, Carey Elwes and Emma Roberts, began shooting in 2015 and was finally close to a distribution deal, but now that's in jeopardy.

Meanwhile, a recent petition gathered 2,500 signatures of University of Southern California film department students who want producer/director Bryan Singer's name disassociated with their department because of alleged sexual misconduct charges that were made against him. Singer produced and directed (ironically) "The Usual Suspects" (for which Spacey won his first Oscar), "The X-Men" franchise, "Star Trek Nemesis" and "Superman Returns," among others. *** Dec. 8 is a big day for documentary lovers with "Arthur Miller: Writer," directed by his daughter Rebecca (wife of three-time Oscar winner Daniel Day-Lewis), which gives new insight into Miller, who wrote classic American

plays such as "Death of a Salesman" (1949), "The Crucible" (1953), "A View From the Bridge" (1956) and the screenplay for "The Misfits" (1961), which was the last film for both his wife, Marilyn Monroe, and Clark Gable. The second documentary, "Bombshell: The Hedy Lamarr Story," finally will give the screen siren -- best remembered for playing Delilah in Cecil B. DeMille's epic 1949 classic "Samson & Delilah" (with Victor Mature in the other title role) -- the recognition she deserves for inventing the radio guidance system for Allied torpedoes during World War II that eventually was incorporated into modern-day Wi-Fi, CDMA and Bluetooth technology. Also that same day, "I, Tonya" will be released, starring Margot Robbie as Olympic figure skater Tonya Roberts, Sebastian Stan as her husband, Jeff Gillooly, Caitlin Carver as their victim, Nancy Kerrigan, and seven-time Emmy winner Allison Janney as Tonya's mother, LaVona Golden. Even though it's not a comedy, it could become a knee-slapping favorite among moviegoers! (c) 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.

Q: I am so sad that "Teen Wolf" is over, and I especially love the actress who played Kate. Can you tell me more about her? -- Brayden F., via email A: Jill Wagner -- who's been the hostess of "Wipeout" and "Handcrafted America," and co-starred in "Blade: The Series" and "Stargate: Atlantis" -- is now in the mood for love and Christmas. Jill stars with Luke Macfarlane in "Karen Kingsbury's Maggie's Christmas Miracle," which premieres Sunday, Dec. 10, at 9/8c on Hallmark Movies and Mysteries. The story centers on Maggie (played by Jill), a high-powered attorney trying hard to balance career with being a single mother to her young son, Jordan. Casey (played by Luke) owns a local cafe and finds solace in tutoring kids despite having lost his wife a few years ago, and Maggie hires him to help Jordan. I spoke with Jill recently, and she is excited for her fans to see her in this role, telling me: "I loved the fact that the characters lived in a truly flawed environment, just as we all do, with real problems that cause deep emotions. I loved that the script has a lot of heart. [Playing a mom] is a super-challenging role that I hope I pulled off." Jill has a busy year coming up, with "Handcrafted America" getting a season-four pickup. "I also have a movie called 'Braven' coming out next year, where I play opposite Jason Momoa as his wife, and that's a bit of a thriller." *** Q: Do you have any more information about the new "Fantastic Beasts" film? -- Tracy L., via Facebook A: Warner Bros. has revealed that the title will be "Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald," with a release date of Nov. 16, 2018. In it, we have a younger Albus Dumbledore, played by Jude Law, and the introduc-

tions of Theseus Scamander (Callum Turner) and Leta Lestrange (Zoe Kravitz), as well as a mysterious woman with no name (Claudia Kim). Johnny Depp is back as Grindelwald, along with the return of Eddie Redmayne, Katherine Waterston, Dan Fogler and Alison Sudol. According to Warner Bros., in this installment, Grindelwald escapes custody and sets about gathering followers to his cause: for True Bloods to rule over all nonmagical beings. *** Q: I can't wait for the return of "Nashville" in January. Do you have any scoops? -- Linda F. in West Virginia A: I do have some news, but it's probably something you don't want to hear. TMT announced that the drama's sixth season, which premieres on Jan. 4, will be its last. Kevin Beggs, chairman of Lionsgate Television Group said: "After more than 120 episodes of unforgettable television, we believe that, creatively, it is time for the series to come to its triumphant close at the end of the upcoming season. ... We owe a special debt of thanks to the 'Nashville' fans who propelled the series to an incredible run." You also can use printed photos from years past, depicting special times like cutting down or decorating a Christmas tree or going caroling or sledding.

COUNTDOWN TO CHRISTMAS WITH OLD HOLIDAY CARDS It's fun to figure out what the coming festive weeks of family life will look like with this countdown-to-Christmas activity. Get started right now to give meaning, structure and surprise to the busy month. First, find your bundle of stashed-away 2016 holiday cards or other cards you have saved through the years.

Let school-age kids cut off the front of each card and set them aside for the project. If there is writing on the back, they can measure and cut out plain paper the size of the card, and affix it to the backside with glue. Stack the fronts of the cards and photos, face-side up, in a pile. Measure and punch one hole at the top center of each card/photo. Punch two holes, 2 inches apart, at the bottom of each card/photo. Loop a stationery ring through each of the bottom holes, creating a mini-book. Flip the stack over and, with the rings at the top, number the backs of the cards with the dates counting to the 25th. Using your calendar as a reference, write a family activity or reminder by the number for each day. Include favorite family traditions and have fun making up new ones. For example, "Bake cookies," "Craft ornaments," "Pick up Aunt Jane at the airport." Include a birthday if there is one, or add an inspirational thought or conversation starter, like "Share

even your local hospital or the Medicare office. They might be in a foreign country and make your caller ID look like they're calling from next door. Beware, and be very careful.

SENIOR DISCOUNTS: YOU'VE EARNED THEM

OPEN ENROLLMENT SCAMS Medicare open enrollment brings the scammers out in full force. This is the time of year (until Dec. 7) to decide whether to keep your current Medicare plan or make changes to it. Even though the deadline for making changes might have ended by the time you read this, scammers have all kinds of tricks up their sleeves: * They might try to tell you that open enrollment runs through the end of December. * Thieves might say that new cards will be coming with a new number (that part is true), but that you have to pay for the new card (that part is a lie). The card is free. * They might claim to be from Medicare and say that you won't get your new card until you can verify the number on your existing card. They'll expect you to read them all that information over the phone. * If you pay your premium with automatic Easy Pay, scammers might try to tell you that your banking information has to be entered into the system because of the new card, and that you need to give them your bank information again. If you don't, they might say, your payment won't go through and you'll be late and you might even have your Medicare cut off. If you get any phone calls with people telling you things like this, HANG UP. They are scammers, calling to get you to disclose your personal information. One other warning: Your caller ID is no longer accurate. Scammers have figured out how to make any number show up,

If you've always prided yourself on being completely independent and have delayed being categorized as a senior, this might be the time to reconsider that. Here are some thoughts: * Are you getting the correct property-tax relief? While your area might specify that you get a certain percent off your taxes because you're a senior, it's always possible that a clerk didn't enter your information correctly. Ask. * Are you shy about asking for your discount at restaurants or other places? Don't be. Those dollars can add up. If you're a member of AARP, it's worth the yearly membership fee if you take advantage of the discounts. Check its website (aarp.org) and click on Discounts. New glasses, groceries, travel, your wireless plan with AT&T, car rental, restaurants and more -- it's all there for the taking. Be sure to always carry your AARP card with you, and get used to asking, "Do you offer senior discounts?" You'll learn that many places do give discounts, but only if you ask. * Safety calls: Many senior centers or small towns have a Good Morning program where seniors receive (or make) a call to let them know all is well. If you don't check in or answer the phone, your emergency contact is called. If you have no emergency contact or neighbor listed, someone will come to your door to make sure you're OK. * Home help: Some communities have a weekend each year when groups help seniors with painting a porch or room, raking a yard and much more. Sign up! * Be aware that not all "seniors" are the same. In some places you don't qualify for discounts until age 65. Or maybe it's age 50, or 55 or 62. You only need to ask. 1. In 2016, Jayson Werth tied a Nationals franchise record for consecutive games reaching base (46). Who else did it? 2. Name the player in the 1970s who led the American League in triples and home runs in the same season.

Tennis is the only major sport where men and women play simultaneously. No match is televised without repeated cuts to the girlfriend or husband of the player on the court. Connors and Evert were the Charles and Diana of their day, and the whole world watched.

LOVE MATCH Tennis is the only sport in the world to use the word "love" when it comes to scoring. Ironically, when you have nothing, zero points, in tennis, this means you have "love." But in the early '70s, the sports world and sports reporters had something all right -- they had the "Love Match" between tennis' top two players, Jimmy Connors and Chrissie Evert. Connors was brash and boorish on the court. His game was about destruction and violence. Connors broke his back during every match. In a sport that harbored a private club mentality, Connors was a prizefighter. (Indeed, he played two winner-take-all prize matches at Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas in the mid-'70s, winning both times.) Evert was "Little Miss Icicle." She moved with grace and never seemed to perspire or struggle with her emotions on the court. She played to win every point and did so with astonishing ease for her entire career, retiring with the highest winning percentage ever. They had little in common -- Connors was from Ohio, Evert from Florida. Evert had her dad as a coach; Connors his mom. In fact, all they really seemed to have in

Rumors that the then 17-year-old Evert and 19-year-old Connors were dating began swirling when the two started missing tennis practices, instead going on dates. The missed practices were few and far between, however, and both became top-10 players. Then, in 1973, Connors proposed to Evert, and she accepted. Going into the 1974 Wimbledon Championships, bookies were giving 33-1 odds that the engaged couple would win Wimbledon. They both rolled through the tournament in convincing fashion, despite the incredible pressure on them both to win, and emerged victorious. Together, standing on the famed Centre Court of Wimbledon, they held their trophies aloft and kissed. Later that night, Connors gave her a gold charm bracelet -- a style of jewelry still referred to as a "tennis bracelet." Eventually, both decided that their schedules and desire to be No. 1 made their proposed marriage impossible. Evert went on to marry John Lloyd, followed by Olympic skier Andy Mill and, briefly, golfer Greg Norman. Weep not for Connors, though. He briefly dated a Miss World after the breakup before settling down with famous Playboy playmate Patty McGuire, a love match that has lasted to this day.

age -- typically the yeast is mixed in with a pet's food. Most pet formulations of brewer's yeast also contain powdered garlic, which is said to help ward off fleas and ticks. Garlic can be toxic to cats and dogs, making it doubly important to follow instructions exactly and contact the vet immediately if a pet consumes too much.

HOW TO HELP PETS BESET BY TRAGEDY ISN'T IT DANGEROUS TO GIVE PETS YEAST? DEAR PAW'S CORNER: You recently told a cat owner that it was OK to give her pet yeast as a supplement. Yeast is supposed to be very bad for pets. Why did you recommend it? -- Concerned in Cincinnati DEAR CONCERNED: This is a great opportunity to discuss the difference between live yeast and brewer's or nutritional yeast. You're right that live yeast, particularly dough leavened with yeast, can be a danger to pets. If, for example, your cat gets up on the kitchen counter where your soon-tobe loaf of bread is rising, and eats the raw dough, trouble could be brewing. That dough may continue to rise in its stomach, and could cause a blockage in the digestive system that, if not treated immediately, could be fatal. Brewer's or nutritional yeast, on the other hand, is a "dead" yeast. Once it has been propagated (grown) in a medium like molasses (for nutritional yeast) or as part of the beer-brewing process (for brewer's yeast), it's pasteurized and dried. This stops the yeast from multiplying, while retaining its nutrients, like B vitamins. Brewer's yeast has either a powder or flake consistency, unlike active yeast, which is packaged as small granules. The amount of brewer's yeast to give a pet depends on its weight. Follow the dosage instructions on the pack-

DEAR PAW'S CORNER: How can we idly stand by when we see problems in the world that directly impact pets? A recent news story claims that in Venezuela, starving citizens are now eating their pets. I've also heard very little about the rescue or care of animals in Puerto Rico since Hurricane Maria destroyed its infrastructure. I feel helpless as to what to do. -- Kara C. in Los Angeles. DEAR KARA: In a month where we in the U.S. celebrate having plenty, it can be difficult to read about the suffering of people and pets elsewhere in the world -- and even within our own borders. Since the end of September, rescue organizations have been working in Puerto Rico to evacuate pets that were already in shelters on the island. These pets will be cared for and many made available for adoption on mainland U.S., freeing up shelter space for animals that were separated from their owners by the hurricane. For example, shelters in the Indianapolis area and surrounding states are taking in hundreds of these shelter pets, the Indy Star reports. The situation in Venezuela also is tragic and worsening. While the headline of the story you linked to is alarming, the article doesn't quite come out and say housepets. But other animals, including horses, reportedly are being slaughtered for food. The best thing you can do when you feel helpless is to pick one way to help, and concentrate on that. Whether it's donating to a pet rescue organization, volunteering to

BRINGER OF BABIES Where do babies come from? Explaining this to a child has required many imaginative explanations. During the 19th century in the U.S. and Europe, the most popular answer was "the stork brought him" or "he was found in the cabbage patch." There are stories dating well before the 1600s that say a baby was found under a large cabbage leaf or was delivered by a flying stork. For centuries, each country had a story. The baby was brought from midwives, wild women of the forest, owls, foxes, a male water sprite, a raven or a crow. The baby could be found under a gooseberry bush, or a lime tree

in countries that didn't grow cabbages. No one really knew where babies came from until the 1680s, when the microscope and other discoveries helped scientists figure it out. It was not until the 1830s that most people were convinced a man and woman, not a stork, made a baby.

In Germany, there was the legend of Der Kindlbringer, the bringer of babies. He carried a bundle of babies in a bunting, in a basket or on his back. He was dressed like a harlequin. Several different German porcelain figurines that were made in about 1850 were sold at a Theriault auction on July 26, 2016 in Washington, D.C. The fiveinch porcelain figure of a man carrying six babies sold for $513. *** Q: I would like to get vintage champagne glasses to friends as an anniversary gift. I have been told that new glasses are flutes, but old ones are coupe-shape with round bowls. A: Wine connoisseurs will tell you to serve champagne in a flute. That shape became popular about 1950, and blown-glass hollow-stem champagne glasses were banned from many restaurants. The stems were too hard to clean. The flute replaced it for sparkling drinks. However, there recently has been a new way to serve champagne. Use a regular wine glass, probably a Bordeaux glass that has straight sides and tapers a bit to the rim. Some experts say these glasses let the aroma last longer. The bubbles look best in a flute, but any of these glasses can be correct for less-formal parties. The flute probably is expected for a diplomatic or royal affair. Remember: Fine crystal is thin and breaks easily. It must be carefully placed in a dishwasher, or better yet, washed by hand. *** TIP: Remove dripped candle wax on a tabletop with a credit card. Scrape with the grain of the wood. When finished use furniture polish or wax to restore the top's luster. The 50th anniversary edition of "Kovels' Antiques & Collectibles Price Guide 2018" makes a great gift. The 548-

Thread the needles before your guests arrive, but do not cut the thread from the spool. It will take a lot of thread for the popcorn garland to cover an entire tree. It's best to slide the piece of popcorn or cranberry to the end of the thread to prevent knots. Make sure that it is well-secured, so that popcorn or cranberries won't fall off, and then gently cut the thread.

A CHRISTMAS PARTY WITH PURPOSE If you love to entertain, but feel pressured by the holiday rush, why not host a party with a purpose? A tree-trimming party is one of the easiest ways to have a fun gathering for family and friends while getting some of your holiday decorating done. It's best to schedule your party early in December, before the holiday crush of shopping and holiday events are in full force. If possible, give your guests at least two to four weeks notice.

* Set a table with simple ďŹ nger foods and appetizers with a winter or Christmas theme, or purchase platters from your local grocery store or gourmet deli. * Serve a variety of drinks, including hot chocolate, coffee, eggnog, cider punch and water. * Purchase some mini Christmas stockings as parting gifts. Fill them with a selection of holiday chocolates or peppermint sticks, or for the children, a Christmas puzzle or holiday coloring book with crayons. Remember, relax, have fun, make memories, and have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Preparing for the party: * Set up your tree and string it with lights before your guests arrive. Clear out the area around the tree so everyone has easy access to hang the ornaments.

* Those who study such things say that paternity leave can have significant domestic impacts. Research shows that men who take a few weeks of leave when they have an addition to their family spend more time on domestic chores and taking care of the kids than men who don't. They cook more, and they're even 50 percent more likely to do laundry. The most interesting finding, though, is the fact that these changes are long-term; the effect tends to last the rest of a man's life. * Those who suffer from nescience are unlikely to know what "nescience" means Р an absence of knowledge. * It was 20th-century French journalist, poet, aristocrat and aviator Antoine de Saint-Exupery -- best known for his novella "The Little Prince" -- who made the following sage observation: "A designer knows he has achieved perfection not when there is nothing left to add, but when there is nothing left to take away." * Eggplants weren't always the deep purple color we know today; originally, the vegetables were white. CAN NICOTINE OFFER RELIEF FOR COLITIS? DEAR DR. ROACH: I just read your column about ulcerative colitis. Many years ago, I read about a possible relief: nicotine. I had a friend who was in dire straits for years, and he was ready to get a colostomy. He had not responded to all kinds of steroids and expensive meds. He was treated with nicotine patches, and in 48 hours he had relief. He wore a patch for at least a year. He moved years ago, but when I knew him, he looked at nicotine as a cure. Any thoughts? -- R. ANSWER: I learned in medical school that ulcerative colitis could appear or flare after quitting smoking, and that studies were being done to look at nicotine as a treatment. Since then, nicotine has been more extensively studied but has not found a major role in the treatment of UC. It is used occasionally and even more occasionally successful in people who have not gotten relief with more-common treatments. The side effects of high doses cause many people to not tolerate it. The booklet on diverticulitis explains this common inflammatory bowel disorder and its treatments. Readers can order a copy by writing: Dr. Roach -- No. 502W, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. Would you recommend it for arthritic pain? If so, what dosage and how often would be safe? What about negative side effects? -- F.P. ANSWER: Boswellia, also called Indian frankincense, is an herb that has been used for millennia in India as an anti-inflammatory for relief of arthritis pain. I was able to find a well-done study from 2011 that showed significant benefit in reducing pain and improving function in people with osteoarthritis of the knee. The only side

RED AND PROCESSED MEATS INCREASE RISK FOR HEART ATTACKS Red and processed meat products increase the risk for heart attacks among Hispanic/Latino populations, according to a study published in the British Journal of Nutrition. Researchers compared the diets of 2,131 participants from the Costa Rica Heart Study who survived a prior heart attack with control participants. Those with the highest intakes of red and processed meats increased their risk for a non-fatal heart attack. One serving of red meat per day elevated the risk by 31 percent, while five servings of processed meats in a week increased the risk by 29 percent, compared with the fewest servings. Researchers suspect high levels of iron, nitrates, and sodium in red and processed meats contribute to oxidative stress linked to atherosclerosis and other heart-related conditions. The authors caution that, as meat intake increases in Hispanic/Latino countries, a rise in cardiovascular disease rates may follow.

effects seen were minor headache and nausea. Other studies, all small and relatively short, confirmed these results. Based on these small studies, it appears that Boswellia extract may have benefit in improving pain and function in people with osteoarthritis of the knee. I found products that are labeled as having what the study medicine did (most commonly 100 mg once daily, containing at least 20 percent AKBA, the active ingredient). However, let me emphasize that supplements are not subject to oversight by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. In February 2015, the New York state attorney general's office accused four major retailers of selling fraudulent and potentially dangerous herbal supplements under their store brands. Of the products they tested, 78 percent did not contain any of the herbs on their labels, and some contained substances potentially dangerous to those with allergies (including wheat in products

labeled "wheat- and gluten-free," and powdered legumes, a potential risk for those with peanut allergies). These products were labeled "standardized" and "guaranteed." It is very frustrating to learn about potentially valuable therapies that offer an alternative to prescription medicines, and have the companies that supply them be untrustworthy. There may be good manufacturers, but with no way of independently testing their products, I cannot give a recommendation for a particular brand. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. FIBER REDUCES RISK OF DEATH FROM COLON CANCER

PLANT-BASED DIETS LOWER RISK FOR HEART FAILURE

Fiber reduces the risk of dying from colorectal cancer, according to a new study published in JAMA Oncology. As part of Harvard’s Nurses’ Health Study and Health Professionals Follow-Up Study, researchers looked at 1,575 participants with colorectal cancer and analyzed their diets and risk for mortality. For every 5 grams of fiber added to their diets, the risk of dying was reduced by 25 percent over an 8-year follow-up period; the greatest benefit was seen with grain consumption. Possible protective mechanisms include better insulin sensitivity, reduced inflammation, and healthier gut flora.

Plant-based diets lower risk for developing heart failure, according to data presented at this year’s American Heart Association’s Scientific Sessions in Anaheim, California. Researchers compared five different diets among 15,569 participants without previously diagnosed heart disease or heart failure from the Reasons for Geographic and Racial Differences in Stroke (REGARDS) study and tracked heart failure incidence rates. Those who followed a plant-based diet that included dark, leafy green vegetables, beans, and whole grains and excluded processed meats lowered their risk for heart failure by 42 percent. Other diets analyzed included red meat, saturated fats, eggs, and sugar-sweetened beverages. Subscribe to the Physicians Committee’s Breaking Medical News.
