TIDBITS® INVESTIGATES THE

NAMES OF SANTA by Kathy Wolfe Most of us think of Santa Claus as the jolly fat man in the red suit, but around the world, this holiday character has a different name and appearance. This week, Tidbits travels the globe to examine diverse and unique names for Santa. • The name of St. Nicholas is a familiar one, and is thought to be beginning of the gift-giving legends. Born around 280 A.D. in what is now Turkey, this monk had a reputation for his kindness, giving away his inherited wealth, and helping the sick and poor around the countryside. The best-known tale is of St. Nicholas rescuing three poor sisters from being sold into slavery, providing each of them with a dowry for a suitable marriage. Because St. Nicholas died on December 6th, that became his feast day. On the night of December 5th, German and Dutch children put a boot or shoe outside the front door, hoping for gifts and sweets to be delivered during the night.

• Bavarian folklore depicts a companion for St. Nicholas, Knecht Ruprecht, who determines if children have been behaving and saying their prayers. If not, he shakes ashes at them, or leaves a stick in their boots instead of treats. • Christkind, the German word for “Christ Child,” referred to an angel who accompanied St. Nicholas on his travels, bringing presents to children in Switzerland and Germany. He was similar to a sprite or fairy, with blond hair and angel wings.

• Finland’s Christmas figure is named Joulupukki, which literally translates “Yule Goat.” His origins are in Norse mythology, where he drives a wagon drawn by goats. His garb is red leather pants and a tight, fur-trimmed red leather coat. According to Finnish legend, Joulupukki and his wife live in Lapland, the northernmost region of Finland, where they are assisted by tonttu, which are not elves, but rather dwarflike humans.

• Jultomten bears gifts in Sweden, riding in a sleigh led by the Julbocker, the goats of the god of thunder. He’s a gnome who dresses in red, lugging a sack loaded with goodies. In Denmark, he is known as Julemanden, and his sleigh is pulled by reindeer. • Pere Noel delivers gifts to French children, treats small enough to fit in the shoes they have left out for him, typically candy, money, or small toys. The children place their wooden shoes by the fireplace, filled with carrots for Pere Noel’s donkey, Gui, the French word for Mistletoe. Pere Noel is accompanied by Pere Fouettard, who delivers spankings to naughty children. Pere Noel visits on December 5th, St. Nicholas Eve in France, and then returns on Christmas Day. …turn the page for more

NAMES OF SANTA (continued):

• In Louisiana’s French Cajun culture, Papa Noel is modeled after Santa Claus, but is transported in a small boat drawn by eight alligators. • Russia’s fabled gift-giver is a woman named Babouschka, a name that means “grandmother” or “old woman” in Russian. She is said to have turned down a trip with the Wise Men to see the Baby Jesus. Another version is that she misled the Wise Men on purpose, giving them wrong directions. She very quickly realized her sin, and spent many years trying to find Baby Jesus and give her gifts to Him. When her search was fruitless, she began giving the gifts to children found along the way, hoping one of them might be Jesus.

• The Dutch were strong celebrators of St. Nicholas Day, giving him the name of Sinter Klaas, derived from Saint Nikolaos, or Sint Nikolaas. He dressed as a bishop and rode a white horse over the rooftops distributing gifts. Dutch immigrants brought the tradition to America, and the name was modified to Santa Claus. In 1809, author Washington Irving published “The History of New York,” which contained a collection of Dutch stories, many of which featured Sinter Klaas, described as large man wearing a red waistcoat, blue tri-cornered hat, and yellow stockings. Irving jokingly referred to him as the patron saint of the city • It’s believed that the name Kris Kringle was initially Krishkinkle or Belsnickel among America’s Pennsylvania Dutch in the 1820s. The name translates from the German “Nicholas dressed in fur.” According to legend, the stern-faced Belsnickel showed up unannounced at children’s homes, ringing a bell and carrying a bag of cakes, nuts, and candies, along with a stick. Children recited a verse to the gift-giver, and if they had been good throughout all the year, Belsnickel would toss treats on the floor and depart. However, naughty children received a spanking with his switch. • England’s Father Christmas dates back to the 1500s during Henry VIII’s reign. He was a giant of a man dressed in green or scarlet fur-lined robes, and was greeted during his visits with mince pies and milk or brandy, left out for him by English children. His visits were on December 6, but when England abandoned keeping the Feast Day of St. Nicholas, Father Christmas began coming down the chimney on Christmas Eve, similar to the tradition of Santa Claus.

• Italy’s Babbo Natale is a skinnier version of the North American Santa Claus, who commands his reindeer Cometa, Ballerina, Fulmine, Donnola, Freccia, Saltarello, Donato, and Cupido. However, the true gift giver in Italy is Le Befana, the old woman who delivers gifts on Epiphany, January 6. Similar to Russia’s legend of Babouschka, Le Befana lived on the road taken by the Wise Men to locate the Christ Child. She was invited on the journey, but declined, later realizing her mistake. La Befana flies on her broomstick and drops down Italian chimneys on the Eve of the Epiphany, leaving gifts.

• It was Clement Clarke Moore’s 1822 poem “An Account of a Visit from St. Nicholas,” what we know today as “The Night Before Christmas” that changed our perspective of Santa Claus. Moore’s poem gave Santa his sleigh led by reindeer, his jolly laughter, and his skill of navigating up and down chimneys. In 1863, political cartoonist Thomas Nast drew a cartoon of Santa for “Harper’s Weekly” magazine that started the modern Santa image. Over the years, Nast updated his illustrations until his 1881 drawing that depicted Santa with his round belly, white, beard, redand-white suit, and sack of toys, along with a North Pole workshop and elves.

HOLLYWOOD -- Jennifer Lawrence, who joined with director Darren Aronofsky for the psychological horror film "Mother" released in September, had off-screen love scenes but ended their one-year romance. Now she's focused on the release of her next two films, the spy thriller "Red Sparrow," with Joel Edgerton and Jeremy Irons, due March 2; and "X-Men: Dark Phoenix," with James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender, opening Nov. 2, 2018. Meanwhile, we'll finally get to see John Travolta as Mafia "Don" John Gotti come Dec. 15. Playing Gotti's wife is Travolta's wife, Kelly Preston, who hasn't made a movie since the disappointing "Casino Jack," with Kevin Spacey. Travolta already is shooting another film, "Trading Paint," with Michael Madsen, singer Shania Twain and "Gunsmoke" TV series alumnus Buck Taylor. *** "The Night of the Living Dead," which gave birth to the zombie genre, was shot in black and white in Pittsburgh in 1968 for a mere $114,000. It grossed $30 million. The creator and father of the zombie genre was George Romero, who left us July 16 at age 77 due to lung cancer. On Jan. 5, the last film he co-wrote based on his original characters, "Day of the Dead: Bloodline," will open. Romero directed five sequels to "Night" between 1978 and 2010, the most successful of which was "Dawn of the Dead" (1978). He also hit big with "Creepshow" in 1982 and the TV series "Tales from the Darkside" (19831988). When you watch "The Walking Dead" or see the upcoming "World War Z 2," remember ... it all started with George Romero. ***

Best-actor nominee Peter Fonda (for 1993's "Ulee's Gold"), son of Oscar-winner Henry Fonda and brother of two-time Oscar winner Jane Fonda, was last seen in the Netflix film "The Most Hated Woman in America," with Oscar-winner Melissa Leo. Now he has completed two films: "The Ballad of Lefty Brown," with Bill Pullman, Jim Caviezel and Kathy Baker (hitting theaters Dec. 15) and "Boundaries," with Vera Farmiga, Christopher Plummer and Bobby Cannavale. Fonda has just been cast in Amazon's "Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan" reboot with John Krasinski in the title role (he's also producing). It's set for release in early 2018. Krasinski also will direct and star with his wife, Emily Blunt -- who will be seen as Mary Poppins in "Mary Poppins Returns," landing Christmas Day 2018 -- in the supernatural/ horror thriller "A Quiet Place," due for an April 6 release. They say, "The couple that plays together ... stays together," but how do you direct your own wife? (c) 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.

Q: I was frustrated to see one of my favorite soap stars, Arianne Zucker, being dragged back into that "Access Hollywood"/Donald Trump fiasco recently. Can you tell me how she's doing? -- Barbara F., via email

• Inflammation Control • Free Radicals Reduction • Digestive Health

A: Arianne is one classy lady, and she's handling the renewed interest in the allegations of President Trump's inappropriate sexual misconduct from years past with You can increase longevity and quality of life! grace -- and with a drive to try to effect change. Trump For more information call: Hablo Español recently disputed the veracity of the "Access Hollywood" 954-815-3722 Sterlingclinicalresults.com tape where he is talking with host Billy Bush about things rich men can do to women without asking. (That's about all the detail I'm going to go into because it disgusts me.) Arianne was the actress they were on the NBC studio lot to meet for a backstage tour of "Days of Our Lives." Arianne told me: "I feel like there is some responsibility there (for me to speak up), but finding a way to do it is hard. I do know the first thing for anyone who has gone through any type of physical situation against their will is healing. How do you start that? Where do you go? Who do you talk to? You hear the way men spoke in the '60s and '70s about women; that was the way, and you dealt with it. How do we reprogram our children to not think that way? I'm in a position where I can help from the heart."

Q: Do you have any "House of Cards" news? -- Brian K., Baltimore A: Production on the hit Netflix drama was halted amid sexual harassment and assault allegations against series star Kevin Spacey. The streaming giant recently announced that Spacey will not be involved when production resumes in early 2018, The sixth and final season will consist of eight episodes instead of the usual 13. The story will center on Robin Wright's character, newly elected President Claire Underwood. *** Q: Is it true that "Big Little Lies" is coming back? -- Rain F., via email

But Arianne is not all about recent hot-button issues: She's also starring in the Lifetime thriller called "Web Cam Girls," which premieres Saturday, Dec. 30 at 8 p.m. ET/PT. According to Arianne, it's "a psychological thriller based on family relationships. So many parents have these relationships with their children that go sour -how do you find that way back? How do you bring your kid back? That's what I really love about this movie because, in some shape or form, every parent goes through something like this with their teenager."

A: It's getting closer becoming a reality. Executive producer/writer David E. Kelley told TVLine.com: "We're kicking around ideas and trying to lasso the talent (to) get the band back together. ... I'm optimistic because everyone wants to do it. We feel we still have storytelling to do." Word has it production could start as early as spring 2018.

1. When was the last time before 2016 that a New York team won the Little League World Series? 2. Who was the only player in the 1950s to have at least 20 doubles, 20 triples, 20 home runs and 20 stolen bases in the same season?

The firing of New York Giants head coach Ben McAdoo along with general manager Jerry Reese was both long overdue and a lesson for anyone who works in human resources. In business, as in sports, there is such a thing called "the writing on the wall." For no coach in the NFL this season was that more apparent than in McAdoo's case. The Maras' old-fashioned stance of "we'll wait until the end of the season to make a decision" backfired spectacularly, namely by letting McAdoo bench two-time Super Bowl MVP, team captain, Giants all-time leading passer, ironman, face of the franchise, former "Saturday Night Live" host and future Hall of Famer Eli Manning for, get this, Jets discard Geno Smith. This is why, when the writing is on the wall, you have to make a decision. Does this relationship make sense? Do we see a long and prosperous future ahead of us? Do the employees respect you? The answer in McAdoo's case was "no" to all three. If there were a corporate flow chart, the decision diamond would have clearly stated, "Fire the guy."

3. Entering 2017, how many Oklahoma Sooners had won the Heisman Trophy?

The benching of Eli Manning was a travesty. I think I speak for most all Giants fans when I say that this was something they didn't ask for or want. The Maras can say that it was the coach's call all they like, but that explanation fails on so many levels.

5. Pittsburgh's Jake Guentzel in 2017 tied an NHL record for the most points by a rookie in one postseason (21). Who else did it?

Whenever I'm asked who the greatest quarterback of alltime is/was, I apply this simple test: Who would I want starting if my life depended on the outcome of the game? My choice is and remains Joe Montana. Out of the current year's quarterbacks, obviously Tom Brady. Granted those two weren't available for him, but McAdoo pinned his career on Geno Smith. Think about that. That's a bad decision and a decision Mara should have overruled. You know it's a problem when even your local congressman expresses disgust. "Problems began when the Giants failed to draft a good offensive line last year," said Chuck Shumer. "McAdoo and Reese should pay the price, but not Eli." An average professional football game lasts 3 hours and 12 minutes, but if you tally up the time when the ball is actually in play, the action amounts to a mere 11 minutes. That means Giants fans enjoyed 22 minutes of wins and 110 minutes of losses this season. In McAdoo's case, those fans couldn't take a New York minute more. Mark Vasto is a veteran sportswriter who lives in New Jersey. (c) 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.

4. In 2017, the Golden State Warriors became the fifth team to start the NBA playoffs 10-0. Name two of the other three to do it (one did it twice).

6. Toronto FC set a Major League Soccer mark in 2017 for the highest points total in the standings for a season (69). Which team had held the mark? 7. Who was the last fighter that boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. notched a knockout or TKO against before Conor McGregor in 2017?

Answers 1. Staten Island, N.Y., won in 1964. 2. Willie Mays had 26 doubles, 20 triples, 35 homers and 38 stolen bases in 1957 for the New York Giants. 3. Billy Vessels (1952), Steve Owens (1969), Billy Sims (1978), Jason White (2003) and Sam Bradford (2008). 4. The Los Angeles Lakers (1989, 2001), San Antonio (2012) and Cleveland (2016). 5. Minnesota's Dino Ciccarelli (1981) and Philadelphia's Ville Leino (2010). 6. The Los Angeles Galaxy (68 points in 1998). 7. Victor Ortiz, in 2011.

GONE IN A NEW YORK MINUTE

But the Giants didn't do that. Instead of handing him his papers, they let him stay in the office and mess everything up. This is precisely why human resources hands you a box, revokes your passwords, takes your clock-in card and parking pass, and escorts you out the door -- so you can't do harmful things to the company. And mess things up he certainly did.

UNUSUAL PLANTS:

POINSETTIAS It’s the holiday season and time for the display of poinsettias! Here are the facts on the best-selling potted plant in North America.

•The bright red parts of the plant are not the flowers, but rather the leaves that change color as a reaction to the plant forming flowers. The true flowers are the yellow clustered buds in the center, known as cyathia. When choosing a poinsettia plant, those with flowers showing little or no yellow pollen will stay in bloom longer.

•American diplomat Joel Roberts Poinsett was a South Carolina legislator and a member of the U.S. House of Representatives before being appointed the first Ambassador to the new Republic of Mexico in 1828. While touring Mexico’s southern Taxco region, Roberts, an amateur botanist, discovered a beautiful flamered blooming shrub growing by the side of the road. He was so fond of the plant that Poinsett sent home clippings to his plantation near Charleston. He continued to breed the plant in his greenhouse, sharing plants with others, and the plant was given his name in the United States. However, for all his efforts, Poinsett couldn’t extend the bloom time of just a few days. It wasn’t until the 1960s that horticulturists were able to breed plants that extended that time.

•Today, in addition to the bright red plants, there are more than 100 varieties of Poinsettias, including pink, white, yellow, purple, salmon, and speckled. The plants contribute over $250 million to the U.S. economy.

•Since the mid-1800s, the United States has observed December 12 as National Poinsettia Day. This is to commemorate the day that Joel Poinsett died in 1851. Following his stint as the Ambassador to Mexico, Poinsett served as Secretary of War, and was a co-founder of the National Institute for the Promotion of Science, a predecessor of the Smithsonian Institute..

•Poinsettias have long had the reputation of being poisonous. A university study indicated that a 50-lb. (22.7 kg) child would have to consume in excess of 500 leaves to have a harmful effect. However, while not technically poisonous or fatal, it still isn’t a good idea to eat the

leaves. Eating leaves can lead to stomach irritation, including vomiting and diarrhea. The sap can also cause a skin reaction to those with a latex allergy.

•Most folks choose to purchase a new poinsettia each year, but devoted horticulturists can get their plants to bloom again the following year. Continue to water the plant until March, then cut the stems to 6 inches (15.2 cm). In June, repot the plant in a larger container, and keep it in a sunny window. The poinsettia can be kept outside as long as the temperature doesn’t dip below 50 degrees F (10 C). Beginning in September, the plant requires 14 hours of uninterrupted darkness every day for eight to ten weeks, and can be kept in light only from 8 AM to 5 PM. Even turning on a light briefly during the dark hours will delay the flowering.

•Growing wild in Mexico, the perennial shrub, botanically known as Euphorbia Pulherrima, can reach heights of 15 feet (4.6 m). Prior to Poinsett’s visit, the plant, which blooms in December, had been used by the Mexicans to decorate their churches, calling it the “Flower of the Holy Night,” referring to Christmas Eve. The Since the 14th century, the Aztecs had used the poinsettia leaves to dye fabric, as well as using the milky sap for medicinal purposes, such as controlling fevers.

I've never gone without just to pay for "Racquel's" vaccinations, and in turn, she is a healthy cat who brings so much companionship to my life. Please tell your readers not to skip this important annual appointment. -- Donna in Sioux Falls, South Dakota

THE BEST GIFT YOU CAN GIVE YOUR PET DEAR PAW'S CORNER: I read your column about a person who did not vaccinate their house cats, and after one of them got out, lost all of them to feline leukemia. I can relate to this person. I only have one cat, and I thought, for a while, that I could get away without vac-

DEAR DONNA: You told them, and I thank you. Vaccinating indoor pets can seem like a pricey extravagance, but it pales in comparison to the cost of treating the diseases that they can contract if they're not vaccinated. To reduce the annual cost, check around for discounted shot clinics. These are usually held on specific dates and places -- pet supply stores, public buildings or participating veterinary clinics. However, these clinics often don't advertise extensively due to costs, so you may need to search a bit. Contact your city or county government to see if any clinics are being held nearby, or stop in to major pet supply retailers like Petco, which often sponsor shot clinics. If not, their workers often know about pet health clinics nearby. These clinics offer required vaccinations and licenses, and sometimes have microchipping and a basic health exam available at a low fixed price per pet.

are wondering which states require that they be restrained, and what the penalties are? -- Rita and Jim, via email DEAR RITA: I misreported this in an earlier column. Actually, no state in the U.S. has yet passed a law specifically requiring pets to wear restraints or be in a carrier when riding in a car. Most legislation in place today considers unrestrained pets a form of distracted driving. Earlier this year, a proposed bill in Maine to require pets to be restrained in cars was withdrawn after public outcry. And amendments proposed in Illinois and California were defeated and vetoed, respectively. Hawaii explicitly prohibits owners from driving with a pet on their laps. Other states that may ticket drivers with pets on their laps include Rhode Island, Arizona, Connecticut, Maine and Oregon. New Jersey allows police officers to stop vehicles in which animals are being improperly transported. While it was written to stop improper transportation of livestock, police can make a stop if they feel safety is an issue. So at the moment, it's unlikely that you'll be stopped simply for having an unrestrained pet in the car. However, if the pet is distracting you or obstructing your view of the road, that's not safe no matter how legal (or illegal) it may be. Regardless of the law, it's just good sense to restrain pets in the car. There are a number of restraint systems on the market that will keep your pet comfortable and prevent it from moving around too much, which in turn keeps you from getting distracted. CHRISTMAS TREE STAND All the early Christmas trees were freshly cut from a nearby forest. By the 19th century in America, the fresh trees were brought into a church or home and decorated. But it was a problem to keep the tree upright, and without water it quickly dried out and lost its needles. In 1876, a man in Philadelphia patented an iron tree stand, and by 1919, a cone-shaped tin stand weighted with sand or water was being sold. But the stands were not large enough to hold all the water needed, and that is still a problem for stands. The stands had to be heavy to keep the tree from tipping, so they were made of cast iron. Many were made with three legs that looked like tree branches. All had large screws that pierced the trunk to hold the tree in place. Collectors search for the iron stands made in unusual shapes -- a Santa Claus, village scene or even a group of reindeer. They sell today for $250 to $900. An unusual tree stand made of concrete shaped to look like a Santa Claus head was sold at a Bertoia auction in 2015. It was made to hold a feather tree and had a small concrete cylinder attached to the back to hold the trunk. No water was needed. The 11-inch-high stand, painted white and red as expected, sold for $118. *** Q: I have a cube puzzle titled "The Night Before Christmas" made by McLoughlin Brothers in New York. It consists of 20 cubes, 2 1/2 inches on an edge, that depict various Christmas scenes based on Clement Moore's poem. Santa is shown in a green coat with a red belt and fur trim. The puzzle is 4 cubes by 5 cubes. The copyright date reads "18--." The last two digits are obscured. What is the copyright date? The puzzle has been enjoyed by four generations of children, and it shows. It's in good enough condition so that all six scenes are shown in detail. What is the approximate value? A: The copyright date is 1889. The pictures made by assembling the cubes are from the children's book, "The Night Before Christmas," published by McLoughlin Brothers. This Santa Claus cube puzzle sells for more $2,000 in almost perfect condition. ***

CURRENT PRICES Advertising tin, Smith's White Fruit Cake, A Delicacy from Dixie, round, yellow and red, woman, fruit basket, Gordon Smith, 8 x 3 inches, $20. Christmas ornament, green grapes kugel, brass cap, hanger, cluster, iridescent, Germany, 1800s, 6 inches, $350.

This rather serious Santa is a Christmas tree stand made of concrete. It sold last year for $118, less than expected. The heavy stand was made for a feather tree, not a natural tree that needed water. Silver Hanukkah lamp, menorah, eight oil fonts, detachable servant light, crown-shaped backplate, marked, Bezalel, c. 1910, 5 x 6 inches, $980. *** Have a collector on your holiday shopping list? WHIP UP HOLIDAY SNOWBALL CANDLES Bring extra holiday light into your home during the December holidays with candles. Instant mood creators, the ickering light not only brightens a dark winter evening, but also quiets us down after a busy day and becomes a subtle conversation pacer. Here's a fun way to create festive wintry candles by whipping up melted parafďŹ n wax and frosting it over and around a round candle or votive, so that it resembles a pretty white snowball. Or, add some whipped wax to pillar candles to look as if covered with freshly fallen snow. Make extras for gifts, too. Here's the stuff you'll need: --ball-shaped candles or 2-inch or larger votive candles --coffee can, or other sturdy tin can such as a clean 28-ounce stewed tomato can

* "Most of my large family stays at our house on Christmas Eve. Although everyone knows where everything is located in the kitchen, it has been our custom to centralize snacks, disposable cups and silverware, canned drinks and other frequently needed items in one cabinet, so no one has to go searching. We also designate a low shelf in the refrigerator for pre-bagged kids' snacks and juice boxes. This way the children can get a drink or snack without help. The kids love it, as it makes them feel all grown up." -- R. B. in Pennsylvania

1. Bend one side of the rim of the can to create a spout, then place a brick or two of parafďŹ n wax in the can. An adult should set the can in 2 inches of water in a saucepan to create a water bath. Heat the water until the parafďŹ n melts, keeping an eye on it at all times. Never place the can on the burner or over an open ame, because the wax is ammable. 2. Carefully pour the melted wax in the bowl and let cool, about 20-25 minutes. It will develop a ďŹ rm crust, but it should not be hard. Gently beat the wax and thick liquid with the whisk or fork until it becomes a uffy white consistency. It's amazing to watch the transformation! 3. Kids can spread the warm whipped wax around a candle, keeping wick exposed. If your candle isn't round, add more wax as it hardens and mold a ball shape with hands. Let wax harden before use. If you have extra wax, re-melt in tin can and add to pillar candles. (See below.) To create snow on pillar candles, "frost" the wax onto the sides and top of a candle, keeping wick exposed with the knife or a craft paintbrush. Sprinkle with glitter for extra sparkle.

Safety Note: Before burning candles, always set them on a plate or tray intended for candles. An adult should always be present when candles are burning. *** Donna Erickson's award-winning series "Donna's Day" is airing on public television nationwide. Feral cats teach their young how to hunt by bringing them dead or injured prey. When you put your cursor over an address, link or graphic in your email (called a mouseover), the real address will show up. DON'T POOH-POOH INTERNET DANGERS Traveling around the internet can be dangerous, even if you know what you're doing. One way to be safer is to understand website addresses, called URLs. A URL is the address of a webpage somewhere on the internet. It means Uniform Resource Locator, and it tells you the location of the webpage ... except when it doesn't because it's a fake. All it takes is one single letter to be out of place to change a safe site to a dangerous one. The thieves are hoping you don't notice.

Some of the common URL extensions (the letters at the end of the address) are: .com, .net, .edu, .gov and .org. If you see any that say .ru, that's Russia. One ending in .cn is China. Unless you're certain of the email sender, don't open it. The beginning of a safe URL (say, a website where you do business) might have https ... the S stands for a secure site. It's usually on websites that sell things and expect you to put in your credit-card number. The majority of these sites are safe ... except when they're not. ANSWER: The average temperature for most people is not the 98.6 that I, at least, was taught growing up. Body temperature varies during the day -- it's a bit lower in the morning and higher in the evening, but it averages about 98.2 degrees. Your observations show that your body temperatures are well within the normal variation. A temperature of 99 is not, strictly speaking, a fever. Fever normally is defined as greater than 101.5, but can be lower in people with severe disease of the immune system. Most cases of fever are temporary viral infections, but fever can be seen with autoimmune and inflammatory diseases without infection, and as a result of some medications. Equally important, it's possible -- and even likely in some cases -- to have serious infection with no fever. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: Years ago, my husband took Lipitor, and after taking it for quite a while, his muscles and limbs developed a profound weakness; he could barely hold up a shovel and had no muscle tone. The doctor switched him to Vytorin, and it went away. Now he is experiencing similar problems after taking Vytorin for many years -- his joints ache, he feels like his body is slow to follow "orders" to move and his feet hurt. Could Vytorin now be the culprit? -- J.H.

SODA CONSUMPTION DECLINES IN U.S. Consumption of sodas and other sugar-sweetened beverages fell among children and adults in the U.S. between 2003 and 2014, according to a study published in Obesity. Researchers tracked dietary data for 18,600 children and 27,652 adults and measured sugar-sweetened beverage consumption. The percentage of children and adults who drank sugary drinks on any given day, including sodas and milk, fell to 60.7 percent and 50 percent from 79.7 percent and 61.5 percent, respectively. The authors caution that consumption remains high among adolescents and young adults and Mexican-American and African-American populations, all of whom are at an elevated risk for obesity.

MOST CANCER CASES IN UNITED STATES LINKED TO LIFESTYLE Most cancer incidents and deaths are a result of modifiable lifestyle choices, including diet, according to data

ANSWER: Lipitor (atorvastatin) and simvastatin are cholesterol-lowering medications in the class called statins. Vytorin is a combination of simvastatin and another, nonstatin medication called ezetimibe. Muscle aches and even muscle breakdown are uncommon (but not rare) side effects of all statin drugs. The side effect usually happens in the first six months of taking the medicine, but still can happen even after years of taking the medicine. Given your husband's history, I would recommend talking with his doctor about stopping the medicine. Changing statins (as your husband did, from Lipitor to simvastatin) can relieve the problem sometimes.

kinson's disease and Type 2 diabetes. I can walk about 10 feet before becoming terribly short of breath and weak. I have been this way for several years, and it has become increasingly worse. Can you help me? -- K.C. ANSWER: Neither Parkinson's disease nor Type 2 diabetes explains terrible shortness of breath on mild exertion. Severe shortness of breath can come from serious heart or lung problems (many types) or severe anemia. I can't help: Get to your doctor right away.

There are other causes of joint and foot aches, and slowness in moving sounds like it might be a neurologic or rheumatologic issue rather than a side effect. But a trial off the medicine is still a good first step.

published online in CA: A Cancer Journal for Clinicians. Researchers analyzed data from 2014 from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Cancer Institute and assessed cancer incidence rates and morbidity attributable to risk factors including red and processed meat intake, overweight, and low intake of fruits, vegetables, and dietary fiber. During that year in the United States, 42 percent of cancer cases and 45 percent of cancer deaths were linked to avoidable risk factors, with excess body weight among the highest risk factors. These data suggest preventive health care measures may strongly reduce cancer risk and related deaths.

AVOIDING RED MEAT PREVENTS DIVERTICULITIS Avoiding red meat and other risk factors may prevent up to half of diverticulitis cases, according to a study published in The American Journal of Gastroenterology. Researchers assessed outcomes from red meat intake, low fiber intake, obesity, minimal physical activity, and smoking in 51,529 men from the Health Professionals Follow-Up Study. Results showed a 73 percent decreased risk for diverticulitis among men who ate more fiber, exercised, and ate less than one serving of red meat per day, compared with men who did not avoid any risk factors observed. The authors recommend clinicians incorporate lifestyle interventions into preventive strategies for disease prevention. Subscribe to the Physicians Committee’s Breaking Medical News. IF YOU DON'Y TAKE CARE OF YOUR GUMS, IT CAN BE HAZARDOUS TO YOUR HEALTH.

GUM DISEASE AND HEART DISEASE: "We all think that cholesterol is important to heart disease. The health of your gums is a more important predictor of whether or not you will have a heart attack or not." Dr. OZ Mehmet C. Oz, M.D., FACS Director, Cardiovascular Institute Columbia Medical Center, NYC ABC News, Good Morning America Several studies have shown that periodontal (gum) disease has a direct association with heart disease. Scientists believe that inflammation caused by periodontal disease may be responsible for the link. Periodontal disease can also exacerbate existing heart conditions. Patients at risk for infective endocarditis may require antibiotics prior to dental procedures. Gum disease is an infection of the tissues that surround and support your teeth. It is a major cause of tooth loss in adults. Because gum disease is usually painless, you may not know you have it. Also referred to as periodontal disease, gum disease is caused by plaque, the sticky film of bacteria that is constantly forming on our teeth. See your dentist if you suspect you have gum disease because the sooner you treat it the better. The early stage of gum disease is called gingivitis. If you have gingivitis, your gums may become red, swollen and bleed easily. At this stage, the disease is still reversible and can usually be eliminated by a professional cleaning at your dental office, followed by daily brushing and flossing. Advanced gum disease is called periodontitis. Chronic periodontitis affects 47.2% of adults over 30 in the United States. It can lead to the loss of tissue and bone that support the teeth and it may become more severe over time. If it does, your teeth will feel loose and start moving around in your mouth. This is the most common form of periodontitis in adults but can occur at any age. It usually gets worse slowly, but there can be periods of rapid progression.

DIABETES AND PERIODONTAL DISEASE: Diabetic patients are more likely to develop periodontal disease, which in turn can increase blood sugar and diabetic complications. People with diabetes are more likely to have periodontal disease than people without diabetes, probably because people with diabetes are more susceptible to contracting infections. In fact, periodontal disease is often considered a complication of di-

abetes. Those people who don't have their diabetes under control are especially at risk. Research has suggested that the relationship between diabetes and periodontal disease goes both ways - periodontal disease may make it more difficult for people who have diabetes to control their blood sugar. Severe periodontal disease can increase blood sugar, contributing to increased periods of time when the body functions with a high blood sugar. This puts people with diabetes at increased risk for diabetic complications.

STROKE: Additional studies have also pointed to a relationship between periodontal disease and stroke. In one study that looked at the causal relationship of oral infection as a risk factor for stroke, people diagnosed with acute cerebrovascular ischemia were found more likely to have an oral infection when compared to those in the control group.

WHAT IS A PERIODONTIST? A periodontist is a dentist who specializes in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of periodontal disease, and in the placement of dental implants. Periodontists are also experts in the treatment of oral inflammation. Periodontists receive extensive training in these areas, including three additional years of education beyond dental school. They are familiar with the latest techniques for diagnosing and treating periodontal disease, and are also trained in performing cosmetic periodontal procedures. Periodontists often treat more problematic periodontal cases, such as those with severe gum disease or a complex medical history. Periodontists offer a wide range of treatments, such as scaling and root planing (in which the infected surface of the root is cleaned) or root surface debridement (in which damaged tissue is removed). They can also treat patients with severe gum problems using a range of surgical procedures. In addition, periodontists are specially trained in the placement, maintenance, and repair of dental implants. During the first visit, the periodontist usually reviews the patient’s complete medical and dental histories. It is extremely important for the periodontist to know if any medications are being taken or if the patient is being treated for any condition that can affect periodontal care, such as heart disease, diabetes, or pregnancy. The periodontist examines the gums, checks to see if there is any gum line recession, assesses how the teeth fit together when biting, and checks the teeth to see if any are loose. The periodontist will also take a small measuring instrument called a probe and place it between the teeth and gums to determine the depth of those spaces, known as periodontal pockets; this helps the periodontist assess the health of the gums. X-rays may also be taken to observe the health of the bone below the gum line.

Currently, he is a member of the American Dental Association, Florida Dental Association, American Academy of Periodontology, Florida Society of Dental Anesthesiology, Florida Association of Periodontists, and the Memorial Hospital Dental Study Club. During his residency at University of Florida, Dr. Forrest worked on many complex multidisciplinary cases. He realized at a very early point in his career that he could make a positive impact on the quality of people's lives. At Premier, he helped create a team of collaborating dentists, who work together to treat some of the most challenging patient cases. His center has turned into the “go to” destination for South Florida’s Professionals and A-listers for smile makeovers. His team has treated models, actors, athletes, and notable socialites. Each member of his team has been thoroughly selected and vetted. He has encouraged the team of specialists to treat patient cases comprehensively, thereby maximizing treatment efficiency and patient care. Patients benefit from this cohesive environment by receiving all of their dental care from one center. Dr. Forrest was born and raised here in South Florida. His team practices in a modern treatment center that comprehensively focuses on all aspects of dental care. Premier Dental Group is a team of highly qualified, advanced, specialized dentists. More importantly, his team cares about their community. Their mission, simply put: Premier Dental Group is committed to providing dentistry that changes people's lives; in doing so we change our own.
