• The science that studies personality through handwriting is known as graphology. It examines the shapes and patterns a person uses to reveal personality, character, and behavior, and relies on the fact that the brain controls the body’s motor limbs. It seems that people have been interested in the concept for centuries, with the first known book on graphology published in 1622, by an Italian doctor of medicine and philosophy named Camillo Baldi. A Frenchman named Jean Michon coined the word “graphology” in the 1870s.

• Experts claim that more than 5,000 personality traits can be determined through handwriting analysis. The science of graphology has been used by lawyers during prospective juror selection, by matchmakers to find compatible people, by profilers to dig into the criminal mind, by employers during the selection and promotion processes, and by colleges in considering prospective students for admission. Several universities offer a Master’s Degree or Ph.D in graphology. More than 2,200 researchers have published their studies of graphology in medical, education, and psychological journals. • Several concepts are used to determine characteristics, including the slant of penmanship, size and shape of the letters, pressure applied while writing, how much margin is left at the edges of a page, and the amount of space left between words. • Graphologists tell us that folks who write in small letters are shy and withdrawn, studious, and meticulous. Those who use large letters are outgoing, people-oriented, outspoken, and love attention.

• The slant of letters provides a hint of a person’s sociability. Those who write with no slant to their letters supposedly are logical and practical, independent people who don’t let their emotions get the best of them. Right-handers whose penmanship slants to the right are open to new experiences and meeting new people. If a right-hander’s letters slant to the left, graphologists claim that these people keep to themselves and like to work alone behind the scenes. Characteristics for lefthanders’ slants are the opposite. • A penman who changes slant from left to right in the same sentence has trouble making decisions. continued on page 2

HANDWRITING

• When writing about themselves, writers who make their upper case “I” larger than any other capitals are said to be arrogant. Capital “I”s made by people who are humble and happy with themselves are smaller.

(continued):

• If a person makes letters more rounded, he or she is artistic and creative, while one whose letters are more pointed is more aggressive and intense, as well as very intelligent. A person who connects the letters is logical and systematic. • Wide spacing between words indicates a person who doesn’t like to be overwhelmed or crowded, one who enjoys freedom. Narrow spacing suggests a person who doesn’t like to be alone, who can be intrusive and may crowd your personal space. • Those who fill the page leaving a margin on the left side are inclined to live in the past, and have trouble letting things go, while those who leave a margin on the right side worry about the future. People who write over the entire page struggle with relaxing, and have a mind that is constantly on the go. • Writers who press the pen hard against the paper are forceful, committed people who take things seriously. They react strongly and quickly when criticized. They also seem to have a higher level of energy. Those who exert light pressure against the paper are sensitive and empathetic sorts, but they may also be physically weak and have a lack of vitality. • The size of capital letters compared to other letters also divulges a personality trait. Very large capital letters indicate an arrogant person, while capitals the same size as other letters show a humble person. • Did you know that we dot our “I’s” and cross our “T’s” differently? A dot placed high above the “I” indicates a great imagination, and a dot placed right above the letter suggests a person who is organized and detail-oriented. How about those who use little circles to dot their “I’s”? Graphologists say they are child-like, playful, and creative. Folks who cross their “T’s” at the very top of the letter are supposedly ambitious, optimistic, and have good self-esteem. A cross in the middle denotes a person comfortable in his or her own skin. A long slash across the letter is made by a determined, enthusiastic person who is rather stubborn, while a short cross points to a person who has a lack of determination.

• How about the speed at which a person writes? One who writes quickly is impatient and dislikes delays and time wasters. A person who takes his or her time with penmanship is organized and methodical, a self-reliant person. • An illegible signature may point to a very private person who is hard to read, but a readable signature says that person is confident and comfortable with who he or she is. • Graphology became a more reliable tool for revealing personality traits with the advent of computer technology. Thousands of corporations throughout the world commonly use handwriting analysis in the employment process to determine honesty, stability, risk or substance abuse, and decision-making skills. In fact, in France and Switzerland, nearly 80% of companies use graphology in the hiring process. • Platt Rogers Spencer was a famous penman who even founded a school to teach his elaborate, elegant style of writing, which was known as Spencerian Script. For 75 years, this beautiful ornamental script was very popular, up until around 1925, when, Spencerian Script was replaced by a faster-written simpler method known as Palmer Hand, which is the style taught to Baby Boomers. In 1978, Palmer was replaced with D’Nealian manuscript, designed to make an easier transition from printing to cursive.

• Large loops at the beginning of letters shows a person who desires to be needed by a large number of people, and desires responsibility and leadership roles.

Japanese Hair Straightening

Hairpieces & Wigs

Thermal Reconditioning is a permanent straightening process that incorporates the use of flat irons with substances that change the molecular bonds in the hair to render it straight. The final result is sleek, silky straight hair that is humidity resistant.

Hairpieces and hair extensions are an ideal hair solution for those men and women that are looking to highlight certain elements of their hair and hence do not have to or want to cover their full scalp.

HOLLYWOOD -- Renee Zellweger, whose last musical film was the Oscar-winning "Chicago" (2002), is taking on playing the iconic Judy Garland during the final six months of her life in the film musical "Judy." Zellweger, 47, will play Judy at 46 doing five weeks of concerts at London's Talk of the Town as she battled her managers (who were robbing her blind), her relationships (she wed musician Mickey Deems March 15, 1969), musicians and fans. The film will feature some of Garland's best-known songs. In 2001, ABC aired the two-part mini-series "Me and My Shadow: A Family Memoir," based on her daughter Lorna Luft's book, which won five Emmy Awards, including best actress for Judy Davis, who played Garland. Judy Garland died June 22, 1969, at 47, three months and seven days after marrying Mickey Deems.

mated film "Arctic Justice: Thunder Squad," with Heidi Klum, Jeremy Renner, Alec Baldwin and Anjelica Huston, opening Jan. 26. Franco has completed acting in and directing "Zeroville," with Will Ferrell, Seth Rogan, Megan Fox, Danny McBride and Dave Franco. *** Alec Baldwin has really amped up his movie career because of all the fire from "Saturday Night Live" and his portrayal of Donald Trump. In addition to "Zeroville" and "Downsizing," he's got a major role in "Mission Impossible 6," with Tom Cruise, Henry Cavill, Rebecca Ferguson, Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames, Michelle Monahan and Angela Bassett, opening July 27. He's just completed filming "The Private Life of a Modern Woman," with Sienna Miller, and "Drunk Parents," with Salma Hayek. Baldwin started his career on Broadway playing Stanley Kowalski in "A Streetcar Named Desire," "Macbeth" and "South Pacific." He has won three Emmys and two Golden Globes. Playing Trump on SNL is like chump change for him! (c) 2018 King Features Synd., Inc.

Q: I remember you writing about "Roseanne" coming back to television, and I thought it would have premiered by now. Do you have any more details? -- Barbie Y., via email A: The "Roseanne" reboot -- which brings back pretty much all the series' cast members, including Roseanne Barr, John Goodman, Laurie Metcalf, Sara Gilbert and both Beckys (!) -- debuts Tuesday, March 27, on ABC for a nine-episode 10th season. In this iteration, Sarah Chalke (Becky No. 2) will play a new character named Andrea, a married woman who hires Becky (Lecy Goranson) to serve as her surrogate. "The Big Bang Theory" star Johnny Galecki also will return as David, but because of scheduling conflicts, he will appear in only one episode.

I sometimes find distracting and off-putting). As of this writing, there has been no announcement as to who will take over the role of Prince Philip from Matt Smith.

An original cast member who won't be returning is Becky's husband, Mark Healy, who was played by Glenn Quinn; Glenn passed away in 2002 of a heroin overdose. His character's memory will be honored in the new season: David (Mark's brother) and Darla named their son Mark. The decision not to recast the role, along with the naming of David and Darla's son in honor of Mark, points to the conclusion that the character of Mark also will be deceased.

*** READERS: In the age when all things old(ish) are new again, news comes that the award-winning cartoon series "Animaniacs" is set to return as the first Hulu original series for families, and I cannot even explain how excited I am. The Warner brothers, Yakko and Wakko, and the Warner sister, Dot, as well as wannabe world dominators Pinky and the Brain, are ready to enchant a new generation of cartoon lovers.

*** Q: I just finished both seasons of "The Crown," and I absolutely adore it! But I heard that for season three, they will be recasting most, if not all, of the main roles. Why? I love everyone on the show. -- Connie F., Fort Myers, Florida

"Yakko, Wakko and Dot have been waiting impatiently inside the water tower, and now their hilarious brand of animated chaos will be unleashed -- again! We're incredibly excited to be partnering with Amblin Entertainment and Hulu for new episodes of 'Animaniacs,'" said Sam Register, president of Warner Bros. Animation and Warner Digital Series. A premiere date has not yet been announced as production is still in the early stages.

A: Netflix recently announced that Olivia Colman would be replacing Claire Foy as Queen Elizabeth II in seasons three and four of the hit historical drama. And the most recent "unofficial" announcement is that Helena Bonham Carter will portray Elizabeth's sister, Princess Margaret. From the get-go, series creator Peter Morgan spoke of his intent to recast characters to better portray them as they age (instead of using age makeup and wigs, which

A: Sorry to disappoint you, but White House is a brand name used by Wilson Burns & Co. of Baltimore in the 1930s. In those days, all grocery-store containers of small amounts of spices were sold in tins. There still are collectors of the tins for their advertising or country-store collections. The best place to find them is at the back of the kitchen cupboard at a house sale. Most tins sell for $15 to $35.

BUTTERFLY JEWELRY Colorful butterflies are admired and even the inspiration for expensive, valuable jewelry. But, many people are annoyed or even afraid of "bugs," and few would want a caterpillar pin or bracelet. In earlier centuries, all sorts of insects and small creatures found in nature were popular. Ladybugs bring luck. Frogs are most appropriate as gifts for travelers. They bring good luck and a safe return. Snakes, perhaps because they shed their skins each year, represent fertility and health. A snake biting its tail represents eternity. Queen Victoria was given a snake ring in 1839 as an engagement ring. There are many antique or vintage gold and jeweled snake bracelets, rings or necklaces. But the butterfly is perhaps the most popular because of the beauty of the design. And, the butterfly represents change and a free spirit. A 4 1/2-inch Russian butterfly pin, made in the early 1900s, sold at the New Orleans Auction Gallery in 2016 for $5,000. It is made with rubies, sapphires, emeralds and old mine-cut diamonds set in 14-carat gold. *** Q: I have a milk glass dish that looks like those with a hen top, but this one has an animal. Butterflies bring change and transformation, according to past traditions. Or they may represent a free spirit. The beauty of this butterfly pin made of precious jewels and gold brought an auction bid of $5,000. It was made in Russia a hundred years ago. Aug 6, 1889." Does the date tell who made it and suggest price today? A: The patent date tells the maker is Atterbury Glass Co. of Pittsburgh. It closed in 1903. Does the animal have red glass eyes? The red eyes were used on the most expensive Atterbury animals. Many companies made milk glass, and milk-glass dishes with animal or bird lids were available. Atterbury is one of the best. In 2000, the dish was worth $175 to $200. Today milk glass is not as popular with collectors, and your dish is worth only $100 to $150.

While I enjoy crunchy muesli with a sprinkle of cinnamon and a drizzle of milk (substitute almond milk, if you prefer), Felicity likes to spoon a couple of tablespoons over a portion of Special K cereal. Her 13-year-old daughter eats it for an after-school snack as is.

READY-TO-EAT MUESLI FUELS UP BREAKFAST When you travel, what souvenirs end up meaning the most? Photos, clothing, impulse items stashed in the side pockets of your luggage? When I pondered the same question and reflected on special trips, I was surprised to discover that the recipes I've jotted in my journal are the take-homes that really live on.

Make breakfasts a priority for your kids to fuel them for their walk to the bus stop and throughout their morning academics. Stir up the natural ingredients and be surprised, like my family, at how tasty and filling this healthy oat-based mixture can be. It lasts for a week in your fridge, but I guarantee it will be eaten well before that.

READY-TO-EAT MUESLI 1 1/2 cups whole-grain rolled oats 1/2 cup plain yogurt (substitute with soy based vegan yogur alternative, if you prefer) 1 1/2 cups milk (substitute almond milk, if you prefer) 1 tablespoon honey

Travel and food: a great combination! That's what my Australian-born-and-raised neighbor Felicity Britton, a globe-trotting mother of two teenage daughters, and I got excited about in a recent conversation.

1/4 cup raisins 1/4 cup loosely chopped hazelnuts

She recalled adventuresome days in her 20s as a marketer for a major cruise line. The lavish on-board breakfast buffet included a heaping bowl of a creamy-style, cold muesli specifically prepared for the tastes of European guests. "I loved it," she said. She inquired about the recipe and has prepared variations of it for over 20 years -- truly, a breakfast staple in her home.

1 large red apple, cored and grated

"This must be some travel souvenir," I thought. Well, it is. The basic, healthy ingredients are easy for your kids to stir up in minutes for a week's worth of breakfasts that store nicely in your refrigerator. Your chosen daily add-ins of seasonal fruit make the possibilities endless.

2. Refrigerate at least two hours, and serve at breakfast or as a snack. Spoon into a bowl and top with fresh fruit, such as blueberries or raspberries.

*** Donna Erickson's award-winning series "Donna's Day" is airing on public television nationwide. To find more of her creative family recipes and activities, visit www.donnasday.com and link to the NEW Donna's Day Facebook fan page. Her latest book is "Donna Erickson's Fabulous Funstuff for Families."

3. This muesli keeps well for a week in the refrigerator. Makes 8 half-cup servings.

(c) 2018 Donna Erickson Distributed by King Features Synd.

1. Let your young kids measure the first five ingredients and mix them in a large bowl while you chop the hazelnuts and grate the apple. Add the nuts and apple to the bowl, stir well and spoon into an airtight container.

DEAR GAYLE: You'll have to work hard on his basic obedience training, and reinforce the "leave it" command. This can take awhile and be especially frustrating with strong-willed dogs, but as you know, the consequences of eating unknown stuff off the ground can be deadly. Not to alarm those who are new to the dog training game: Dogs often eat things we would never come close to as humans, and most of the time these things pass through their systems with little to no trouble. But a splintered chicken bone or a piece of cloth -- these can cause a lot of problems with the digestive system and send your pet to the emergency veterinarian.

GETTING THE BANDIT TO DROP THAT LOOT DEAR PAW'S CORNER: My dog "Bandit" will eat anything he finds on our daily walks. He's really fast, and by the time I try to stop him he usually has it in his mouth. He will not follow my command to drop it. Yesterday, he snapped up a pork chop bone that had fallen from our neighbor's trash can, and I could not pry it from his teeth. He ended up chewing it to splinters, which I know is really dangerous. How can I stop him? -- Gayle in Winter Garden, Florida

During his refresher training, keep Bandit on the leash during your walk and when training. Work on the "sit" command. Dr. Sophia Yin recommends treat-based training as you move into the "leave it" command training. While the process would take too long to explain here, you can find details at her website: drsophiayin. com. Search for: Dogs Who Eat Things Off the Ground. Remember to work with Bandit in a calm manner, away from other dogs and distractions. Send your questions, comments and tips to ask@ pawscorner.com. (c) 2018 King Features Synd., Inc.

Saban has won 11 SEC titles and has a scorching-hot record of 218-62-1. Alabama's recruiting classes have been phenomenal, and with the Clemson rivalry tilting toward 'Bama, it's not a stretch to think that they can win a few more. The Bowl Championship Series favors Alabama. Anytime they are picked in the top four you have to make Alabama the favorite, and not due to the talent on the field ... the in-game coaching of Saban is nothing short of spectacular.

SABAN THE GREAT The word "greatest of all time" gets bandied about a lot these days, and rarely is it true (see: Tiger Woods, LeBron James). However, in certain cases, it is either emphatically true (Tom Brady) or definitely worth discussing. Nick Saban, Alabama's dynastic coach, is well-worth discussing. The discussion doesn't stray outside of the state of Alabama. For before Saban won his five championships (six overall), there was Paul "Bear" Bryant and his six championships at Alabama. Bryant has a stadium, museum, drive and a hall named after him in Tuscaloosa, and Saban's got a statue of himself out front. But can the two really be compared? Bear Bryant was a trailblazer. He, in part, probably did more than anyone to advance the game of college football during his decades' long career. Now known more for his torturous, inhumane training camps than his record of 323-85-17, Bryant won championships in 1961, 1964, 1965, 1973, 1978 and 1979. Modern day historians also would like to say he won another two national championships -- one at Kentucky in 1950 and Alabama in 1966.

Saban has guts. He called for an onside kick at the beginning of the fourth quarter a few years back that sent Clemson reeling, leading to a dramatic win. This year, in the championship, his benching of QB Jalen Hurts at the half in favor of Tua Tagovalia, the hard-throwing freshman hot-shot out of Hawaii, will go down in history as one of the greatest coaching decisions of all-time. But is he the greatest? Saban doesn't think so. "I think Coach Bryant is probably the best coach of all time because of the longevity of his tenure as a coach and the way he changed," Saban said after the title game. "I mean, he won championships running the wishbone. He won them with Joe Namath dropping back throwing when people never, ever did it. I just think that, for his time, he impacted the game and had more success than anybody ever could." Popular rumor has Saban returning to the NFL to coach the New York Giants, but the smart money says he will stay at Alabama and manufacture even more championships. Either way. It's going to be great to watch. Mark Vasto is a veteran sportswriter who lives in New Jersey. (c) 2018 King Features Synd., Inc.

In 2017, Edmonton's Connor McDavid (age 20) became the third-youngest winner of the Hart Trophy (NHL MVP). Who was younger? 6. Who was the last NASCAR driver before Kyle Larson in 2017 to have a three-race Cup winning streak at Michigan International Speedway? 7. * Watch what you eat and drink in the evening. Foods and drinks that are high in protein, caffeine or sugar can keep you awake. Liquids can cause you to have to get up to use the bathroom during the night. * Exercise has been found to be beneficial for sleep, especially for increasing quality of sleep and decreasing certain problems such as sleep apnea. Even small amounts of exercise during the day could help. For most people, some exercise is better for sleep than no exercise at all. * Avoid excitement before bedtime. Instead, try reading, taking a warm bath or shower, or adopting some other routine to help you relax.

GOOD NIGHT, SLEEP RIGHT!

* When traveling, try to keep your normal eating and sleeping routine. You might find it easier to adjust to a different time zone by adapting your sleeping times before you leave home. These foods may improve the quality of sleep:

Like many adults, I sometimes have trouble going to sleep or staying asleep. Sleep researchers have determined that as many as two-thirds of Americans don't get enough sleep. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has called insufficient sleep a "public health epidemic." Contrary to common belief, sleep is not a time when the mind and body shut down. According to the National Sleep Foundation, "sleep is an active period in which a lot of important processing, restoration and strengthening occurs." Sleep serves critical functions, and it is necessary for optimal health and well-being. Over time, lack of sleep can lead to stress, depression, and mental and physical exhaustion. We know that when we're not well-rested, we don't perform at our best. Most adults need seven to nine hours of sleep each night. Some people may need as few as five hours or as many as 10 hours of sleep. Children need even more. Both children and adults can use naps to get the total number of hours of rest they need. The focus here is on ways that adults can meet their need for rest.

Walnuts -- Good source of tryptophan, a sleep-enhancing amino acid that helps make serotonin. Walnuts also contain their own source of melatonin, the "body clock" hormone that sets your sleep and helps you to fall asleep faster. Almonds -- Rich in magnesium, which helps you to stay asleep and also builds bones. Depositphotos.com Tart Cherry Juice -- Naturally boosts levels of melatonin.

Lettuce -- Contains lactucarium, which has sedative properties. This unusual tea recipe is a natural way to help you get a good night's sleep.

2 1/2 cups water

Your body has a regular rhythm. Your body and your brain will tell you when you need rest. Use this information to set a regular time to go to bed and get up. Maintaining this simple routine will help supply your body with the energy it needs each day. Sleep cannot be stored. Bodies need rest on a regular basis.

3 to 4 large lettuce leaves

Here are some tips for improving your sleep:

1. Using a small pot, pour in water and add lettuce leaves, and bring to a boil over high heat, about 15 minutes. Remove pot from the heat. Add fresh or dried lemon balm or the lemon balm tea bags, cover, and let steep for 30 minutes.

* Most people find that the environment of the room is important to sleeping well. Usually people want the room dark, cool and quiet. * Some people use a nap to get the extra sleep they need. Sleep experts suggest limiting an adult nap to less than 45 minutes and taking it before 4 p.m. to ensure that you can still get a full night's sleep.

1 tablespoon of lemon balm (dried), or two dozen fresh leaves, or 2 herbal lemon balm tea bags 1-2 teaspoons honey

2. Strain the tea and pour into a sealable container. Discard the lettuce leaves and the dried herbs or tea bags. Pour a serving of the tea into a cup, stir in the honey, and drink 1 hour before going to bed. Refrigerate any remaining tea, and reheat and add honey before drinking. Makes 2 servings.

THE PEACE CORPS For nearly 57 years, Americans have been volunteering for the Peace Corps. How much do you know about this organization? Follow along and ďŹ nd out. •Although John F. Kennedy established the Peace Corps on March 1, 1961, he wasn’t the ďŹ rst to envision the organization. In 1957, Minnesota Senator Hubert H. Humphrey introduced the ďŹ rst bill to create the Peace Corps. John F. Kennedy ran with the idea during his 1960 presidential campaign. •After World War II, several members of the U.S. Congress proposed bills to create volunteer organizations in underdeveloped countries. In 1951, then-Representative John F. Kennedy advocated the idea of offering advice, training, and assistance to such locations. The following year, Connecticut Senator Brien McMahon voiced the concept of an “army of young Americans to act as missionaries of democracy.â€? •Kennedy established the Peace Corps under Executive Order #10924 and appointed his brother-inlaw R. Sargent Shriver as its ďŹ rst Director. Over the next six years, more than 14,500 volunteers developed programs in 55 countries. •Since its inception, more than 230,000 Americans have volunteered in 141 countries. In order to be accepted, the applicant must be a U.S. citizen at least 18 years old, and must apply at least nine months before he or she wants to leave. The volunteers train for three months, then are assigned for a two-year period of service. While a person can request an extension of service, they are limited to a maximum of ďŹ ve years, in order to keep the staff refreshed and innovative. If a person wishes to join up

again later, he or she must be away from the Peace Corps the same number of years they were active. •The areas of Peace Corps service are education, health, youth in development, environment, community economic development, and agriculture. Volunteers might provide training in farming methods, recycling, park management, wildlife preservation, sanitation, soil conversation, and vegetable gardening. Residents are instructed in the development of alternative fuel sources, the protection of the environment, sustaining of forests, as well as how to generate income. Some volunteers teach in elementary or secondary schools, while others provide medical care. The organization has resources for teachers to teach 101 different languages. •About 7,400 people volunteer in the Peace Corps today. Of these, the average age is 28, although 7% are over the age of 50. The highest number of volunteers are in Africa, with 46%, with Latin America a distant second at 18%. Females comprise 62% of volunteers, and 38% are male. Volunteers are provided with a living allowance that allows them to live “similarly to the people in their community.â€? Complete medical and dental care are furnished, as well as transportation to and from the country of service. •Notable veterans of Peace Corps service include President Jimmy Carter’s mother Lillian, who served as a nurse in India in the 1960s, former Secretary of Health and Human Services Donna Shalala, who volunteered in Iran from 1962 to 1964, and Bob Vila, the host of television’s “This Old House,â€? who was in the Peace Corps in Panama from 1971 to 1973. John F. Kennedy’s great-nephew Joseph P. Kennedy III served in the Dominican Republic from 2004 to 2006. This grandson of Bobby Kennedy is now a U.S. Representative from Massachusetts.

What happens if we refuse care? A fair percentage of us will be readmitted to the hospital within 30 to 60 days. We might be in worse shape than the first time we went in, especially if we don't take the medications correctly or we end up with an infection. Be smart. If you're being discharged from the hospital or rehab, ask whether you're getting a "nurse visit" within 24 hours. If you get a blank look, start asking more questions.

WHY DO WE REFUSE HOME HEALTH CARE? Far too many of us say no to help when we're discharged from the hospital or rehab, even though studies have shown that too often we end up even worse off when we refuse home health care. Why do we make these choices? * The situation isn't correctly explained to us. Worse is if the hospital doesn't understand the Medicare guidelines and doesn't offer us home health care. There's a difference between "home care" and "home health care." One involves skilled care and the other personal care. If we're on Medicare and have functional limitations, Medicare will pay for home health care services. * We don't know who is paying for it. * Discharge information is confusing, especially if it involves new medications.

At the same time, if you're told you will get home health care and you don't like it, accept the situation at least for a few weeks. Your health depends on it.

DON'T LET OTHERS HIJACK YOUR RETIREMENT For too many of us, retirement doesn't necessarily mean taking the time for things we want to do and for rest and relaxation. Instead, the word "retire" means that others assume we'll have lots of time to do things for them. The expectations can start the instant we retire, and our calendars can fill up astonishingly fast, if we let them. Volunteering, babysitting grandchildren, walking someone's new dog in the afternoon ... their to-do lists for us can be endless. Because, you see, we have the time to help, now that we're retired. And we don't want to be rude ... Except, maybe that wasn't the plan.

* We don't want strangers in our homes. (Or we'll agree to it while we're still in the hospital, just to get them to leave us alone, but once care workers show up, we won't let them in.) * We don't think we need help or that relatives will help us. * We had a negative experience in the past with home health care.

There are steps we can take to forestall the tendency of people to want our time, stopping it before it gets started. We have to, if we're going to rescue our retirement. * Don't make promises when approached. Start with saying "maybe" and add a lot of qualifiers. Maybe you'll eventually think about volunteering at the elementary school. Maybe next year you'll consider shelving books at the library.

* "I have other obligations," can be your new operative phrase when someone tries to pin you down, and don't elaborate. * "I've decided not to do any volunteer work for the first year." Notice the operative word? "Decided" is a statement that you won't be coerced. And delete from your vocabulary the words, "I'm sorry, but ..." That weakens your position and sounds like there's wiggle room. * Unplug your phone whenever you need to. Maybe that's every afternoon when you know an employed neighbor will be calling to ask if you're going to the grocery store. Just don't be available. Because remember, your retirement isn't endless. Write that on a small card and tape it to the mirror where you'll see it every day. (c) 2018 King Features Synd., Inc.

When I went to an orthopedic surgeon, he suspected that the condition could be caused by a disc problem. Although an X-ray did show some stenosis, it was not definitive. I suspect I caused the problem by years of sleeping on my right side in a curled-up position, resulting in entrapment of the nerve. The orthopedist, however, says he generally sees this condition only in obese people, which I am not. How likely is it that my condition is of spinal origin rather than an entrapped nerve? If the condition can resolve itself gradually by avoiding activities that contribute to the problem, what does "gradually" mean? Do stretching exercises help relieve the entrapment? -- J.C.B. ANSWER: What you are describing is meralgia paresthetica, the compression of the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve, which can be compressed as it passes under the inguinal ligament, exactly as you described. Your orthopedist is correct that this condition is more common in the overweight or obese; however, I have seen it in both people who are losing weight and people of normal, stable weight. It is more common in conjunction with diabetes, and it has been reported after long-distance walking and cycling. Because of the area involved in your numbness, it is very likely to be meralgia paresthetica and not spinal in ori-

gin. It does usually resolve, but it does so over the course of months, typically. Stretching would seem to make sense, but as far as I know, it hasn't been shown to work. If it isn't getting better, an injection into the nerve usually is effective. This is commonly done by an anesthesiologist or a pain-management specialist. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: Can you please give me some information on Elhers-Danlos syndrome? My daughter and two granddaughters have it. -- E.E.H. ANSWER: Ehlers-Danlos syndrome is actually a group of uncommon genetic disorders, with very stretchy skin, flexible joints and tissue fragility as common features. There are six different kinds of Ehlers-Danlos, and each is different in regard to what tissues and organs it most affects. Most are caused by mutations in genes for collagen and related structural proteins. They can be inherited or not (in which case they are new mutations).

New evidence contradicts the notion that early humans were mainly hunters. Archeological findings recently unearthed in Italy, Russia, and the Czech Republic show evidence that grains were ground into flour as far back as 30,000 years ago. The findings were presented in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Whole milk consumption increases risk for prostate cancer recurrence in overweight and obese men, according to a study published in The Prostate. Researchers followed 1,334 participants from the Cancer of the Prostate Strategic Urologic Research Endeavor and tracked dairy intake and cancer-related deaths, recurrences, and treatments. Those who consumed more than 4 servings of whole milk per week

The prognosis in EDS depends to a great extent on the subtype. I would suggest that you go with your daughter and granddaughters to their doctor (if they agree) to learn more about their particular type. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. cancer, according to a study published in the European Journal of Cancer. Researchers reviewed meat consumption and cancer incidence rates for 262,195 women from the UK Biobank over a 7 year period. Those who consumed the most processed meats per day (an average of 20.2 grams per day or less than half the size of a regular hog dog) increased their risk by 21 percent, compared with those who consumed the least. In this study, processed meat was defined as bacon, ham, sausages, meat pies, kebabs, burgers, and chicken nuggets. The authors also conducted a meta-analysis of 11 studies and found overall cancer risk and post-menopausal cancer risk increased with processed meat consumption. Possible mechanisms include heme iron, nitrates and nitrites, and heterocyclic amines found in processed meats. This study adds to accumulating evidence on the relationship between processed meats and breast cancer.

NEW EVIDENCE FINDS EARLY HUMANS WERE PLANT-EATERS

DAIRY INCREASES RISK FOR PROSTATE CANCER RECURRENCE

Flexible joints (often but wrongly called "double-jointed") and excessively stretchy skin are almost universal in EDS. The excess joint movement can cause dislocations and chronic joint pain resembling fibromyalgia. Other commonly associated conditions include prolapse of the mitral valve, hernias and, in the vascular type of EDS, aneurisms.

increased their risk for recurrence by 73 percent, compared to those who consumed fewer or no servings of milk. This increased risk rose threefold in men with high BMIs. Potential mechanisms behind the elevated risk include higher intake of IGF-1 and saturated fat and associated inflammation. Insulin resistance and increased inflammation seen in men with high BMIs may also attribute to this risk.
