Bad guys have been robbing banks since there have been banks to rob! This week, Tidbits studies up on some famous robbers and their hauls. • The son of a Missouri Baptist minister, Jesse James had a good start in life, regularly attending church, was educated, and was known to refuse to use bad language. In 1863, the family farm was savagely attacked by Union soldiers, and at age 16, Jesse, along with his brother Frank, became Confederate guerrilla soldiers. When the Civil War ended, Frank and Jesse became the leaders of a band of outlaws of ex-Confederates, and began robbing trains, stagecoaches, and banks that were owned by Northern institutions. Their first bank robbery took place at Liberty, Missouri’s Clay County Saving Association Bank, and the gang had a take of $60,000 in cash and bonds. A 17-year-old bystander was killed as the gang made their escape. The gang’s 15-year crime spree produced 26 robberies with a take of more than $200,000, and the deaths of at least 17 men. Jesse was killed by a member of his own gang, Bob Ford, for the reward money, shot in the back of the head as he was straightening a picture on the wall, dead at 34.

• Three months after Jesse James’ death, Frank surrendered to authorities, but juries were unable to convict him, based on insufficient evidence. He returned to the family farm, where he conducted tours of the family farm for 25-cents, living to the age of 72. • Jesse James couldn’t have known how his life of crime would spur another on to the same life. Arizona Donnie Clark was a Missouri native who as a child had witnessed the James Gang ride through her hometown, and developed a passion for the wild life. Kate, as she was nicknamed, married a farmer named George Barker and had four sons. All four became involved in crime at an early age, and Kate, who became known as Ma Barker, began traveling with her sons to locations of their crimes. As the matriarch who controlled the crimes, she was referred to by J. Edgar Hoover as “the most vicious, dangerous and

BANK ROBBERS (continued):

resourceful criminal brain of the last decade.” Some say that Ma Barker never participated in any of the robberies, kidnappings, or murders that involved her sons, but nevertheless, she was killed by FBI agents during a shootout at her Florida home, along with one son. Another son committed suicide, one was killed trying to escape from Alcatraz, and the fourth was killed by his wife. • In 2005, thieves in Brazil dug a 260-ft (79.3 m) tunnel, complete with wood paneling, electric lights, and a ventilation system from a building to Banco Central in the city of Fortaleza. The tunnel, 13 feet (4 m) below the surface, took three months to excavate and the team posed as landscapers to explain the truckloads of dirt being removed. They even sold plants and turf to cover their operation. The robbery took place on a Saturday, when the thieves took over $79 million, which remained undetected until Monday. While more than 40 arrests were made, only about $9 million was recovered. • It’s estimated that Ray Bowman and William Kirkpatrick robbed 28 banks across the U.S. between 1982 and 1998, with a stake of more than $7 million. No one was ever hurt, and gunfire only occurred one time. One robbery alone, that of Lakewood, Washington’s Seafirst Bank, yielded $4.46 million. A simple stop for speeding in Nebraska brought an end to Bowman’s spree, when police discovered guns, fake badges, masks, and $1.8 million in cash in the vehicle. Just a few weeks later, Kirkpatrick’s career was over when he failed to pay rent on his storage locker. The owner opened it, found a large stash of guns, and notified authorities, who captured him. • Due to his ability to make quick and narrow getaways from police, bank robber John Dillinger was given the nickname “Jackrabbit.” Dillinger’s first robbery was the theft of $50 from the local grocery store. He was captured and

served over nine years. He was released into a jobless Great Depression, and a month later he robbed his first bank, the New Carlisle, Ohio National Bank, getting away with $10,000. Six weeks later, he robbed another Ohio bank, but was captured. He escaped just four days later. Within 14 months, Dillinger had robbed an estimated 24 banks, and was suspected of 10 murders. The FBI billed him as “Public Enemy #1.” To avoid the heat, Dillinger hid in Chicago, living anonymously, working as a clerk. But within a matter of months, a tip from an informant led FBI agents to the Biograph Theater, where Dillinger was watching a movie. He was shot four times, and his life of crime was over at age 31. • In 1983, six men broke into the Brink’s-MAT bank facility at London’s Heathrow Airport and made off with $30 million worth of diamonds, gold bullion, and cash. The operation was made easier with the help of one of the security guards who provided the robbers with a key and an outline of security measures. His fellow guards were soaked in gasoline and were told they would be set on fire if they didn’t cooperate. Although most of the gang were rounded up and convicted, the majority of the gold has never been recovered. • The biggest news of 1974 may have been the kidnapping of 19-year-old newspaper heiress Patricia Hearst by the Symbionese Liberation Army. Two months later, she was recorded on surveillance video robbing San Francisco’s Hibernia Bank, brandishing an M1 carbine, aiding her captors. When she was captured in September, 1975, she weighed just 87 lbs. (40 kg.), and was described in a “zombie-like” state. She told the story of repeated torture, being locked in a closet blindfolded for weeks, along with brainwashing. It was believed she had Stockholm Syndrome, a psychological condition that occurs when hostages develop positive feelings toward their captors. Hearst was initially sentenced to a 35year prison term that was reduced to seven years, and she eventually served 22 months, having her sentence commuted by President Jimmy Carter. She was fully pardoned for her crimes by President Bill Clinton in 2001.

Q: Can you tell me when "The Handmaid's Tale" will return? It's one of my favorite dramas. I can't wait to see what happens next. -- Gina T., via email A: You'll have to wait just a little while longer, but maybe some of these clues as to what to expect in season two will help tide you over. First of all, "Handmaid" returns to Hulu for 13 new episodes, two of which will premiere on April 25 (with subsequent episodes released every Wednesday for streaming). This season will be shaped by Offred's (played by Emmy Award-winning lead actress Elizabeth Moss) pregnancy and her ongoing fight to free her future child from the dystopian horrors of Gilead. "Gilead is within you" is a favorite saying of Aunt Lydia, and in season two, Offred and all characters will fight against -- or succumb to -- this dark truth. And while season two goes beyond what was covered in Margaret Atwood's book, the acclaimed author is helping to shape the new season's narrative, along with creator/showrunner Bruce Miller. Miller told "Newsweek": "People talk about how we're beyond the book, but we're not really. The book starts, then jumps 200 years with an academic discussion at the end of it, about what's happened in those intervening 200 years. We're not going beyond the novel. We're just covering territory [Atwood] covered quickly, a bit more slowly." Look for special guest star Marisa Tomei in episode two (which features a look at the Colonies). The series also stars Joseph Fiennes, Yvonne Strahovski, Samira Wiley, Alexis Bledel, Ann Dowd, Max Minghella, Madeline Brewer, O-T Fagbenle and Amanda Brugel. *** Q: Can you tell me what Alan Ball has been working on lately? I absolutely adored "Six Feet Under" and "True Blood." -- Eric P., Cleveland

Elizabeth Moss George Kraychyk/Hulu

A: Alan continues his long-standing relationship with HBO, bringing us a new series called "Here and Now," which premieres Sunday, Feb. 11. Starring Tim Robbins and Holly Hunter, this 10-episode dark-comedy/drama series is the story of a multiracial family whose bonds are tested when one of the children begins seeing things the rest can't. It also focuses on this family as they wind their way through a Trump-era America, with Tim Robbins' character stating in the series' preview: "So much hatred going around. It feels like the world is falling apart." *** Q: I am a huge fan of Dominic West. Can you tell me what he's been up to? -- Frieda F., via email A: Dominic has a monumental task ahead of him next: He'll be playing Jean Valjean in a six-part BBC-Masterpiece production of "Les Miserables." In a statement, Dominic called the role "one of the greatest characters in world literature. ... His epic journey of redemption is one of the extraordinary roles an actor can take on." Lily Collins and David Oyelowo also star. Production started this month, so we don't have a release date yet, but I'll keep you posted. BOY SCOUTS February 8 marks the 117th anniversary of the establishment of the Boy Scouts of America. Tidbits commemorates this youth organization with a few facts about its founding and growth. • The BSA was modeled after the Boy Scout Association, an organization founded by British Army officer Robert Baden-Powell in Britain in 1908. An American newspaper entrepreneur named William Boyce was aided by a Boy Scout while traveling overseas, and was so impressed that, four months after his return to the States, he and two others incorporated the Boy Scouts of America, applying for a congressional charter. In 1911, they held their first annual meeting at the White House, where they were addressed by U.S. President William Howard Taft, and the oath, laws, badges and policies were adopted. • The name of Arthur Eldred isn’t a familiar, but in the world of scouting, he is remembered as the first recipient of the Eagle Scout medal, awarded to this 17-year-old Long Island, New York scout in 1912. By 1965, there were 500,000 Eagle Scouts, and one million in 1982. The two-millionth Eagle Scout medal was awarded in 2009. Only about 4% of Boy Scouts are awarded this rank, and only after a lengthy review process and years of efforts on the part of the scout. An Eagle Scout must have earned 21 merit badges, and have served as a patrol leader, assistant senior patrol leader, or senior patrol leader, as well as complete a service project that benefits an organization outside of the Boy Scouts. • The first Boy Scout World Jamboree was held in 1920 in London, with 8,000 Scouts from 34 countries attending.

Find All the Fun and Games Answers on Page 14! • The Cub Scouts were formally launched in 1930. By 1936, total membership in the BSA surpassed 1 million. The group enrolled its 20 millionth member in 1952, and by 1965, the Boy Scouts of America had 40 million registered members. • Through the efforts of the BSA during World War I, Liberty Loan bonds totaling $147,876,902 were sold in 1917 – 1918. During World War II, the Scouts collected 30 million lbs. (13,607,771 kg) of rubber during a two-week drive, as well as collecting aluminum and salvage for the war effort, along with serving as messengers and assisting emergency medical units. • Camping has long been associated with the Boy Scouts. The first Boy Scout camp, the Philturn Rocky Mountain Scout Camp, opened in 1939, following a generous gift from Oklahoma oilman Waite Phillips. Phillips donated 35,857 acres of land near Cimmaron, New Mexico to establish a wilderness camping area. That first summer, 189 Boy Scouts from Texas, Kansas, Louisiana, and Oklahoma attended the camp at a cost of $1 per week per camper. Two years later, Phillips added to his gift, increasing the size of the property to 127,395 acres. An additional piece of land was purchased in 1963, boosting the total area to 214 square miles. • The song “God Bless America” is familiar to most, but not everyone knows its importance to the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. In 1940, its composer Irving Berlin created a foundation to distribute the royalties from the song to these organizations “for the benefit of the youth of America.” Sixty years later, at the turn of the 21st century, $6 million had already been donated to the Scouts.

done, go outdoors to turn it inside out and shake, then pop it in the washer. Best tip ever! * If your dryer is taking a long time to run its cycle and the clothes STILL aren't dry, check your lint trap. Follow the hose all the way to the end, and be sure to check the grate that is in place where the hose exits an exterior wall. Lint can build up here, making it hard for heat and steam to escape. It's also a fire hazard.

* Keep makeup brushes in tip-top shape: Wash with a good brush cleaner weekly, and store upright in a jar (bristles up). Don't toss them in a box, bag or drawer with your makeup! They may pick up unwanted pigments and the facial bacteria can compromise makeup! * What's in season? Get more bang for your produce buck in February by looking for good deals on: Brussels sprouts, grapefruit and other citrus, pears, kale, sweet potatoes, winter squash, bok choy, apples and radicchio. Branch out with persimmons, leeks, red currants, cherimoya, pomelo and dates. * If your skin gets dry, try keeping a bottle of lotion in your shower. Apply either just before you towel off or directly after. The heat from a shower will help your skin absorb the moisture. * Want a great way to clean your ceiling fans without dropping dust bunnies everywhere? Simply use a pillowcase. Encase the entire blade and wipe from the center out. All the dirt is inside the case, and when you are

* "In our house, we use nail polish to distinguish whose plastic leftover containers are whose. My roommate and I both bought the same set (a good deal!), and we painted a little X on the bottom and on the top of the lids in contrasting colors. So I only use the red dot ones, and she uses the dark blue." -- M.T. in Florida * "I purchased a couple glass-cleaning cloths that were nice and big. I used my sewing machine to sew the edges together and make a little sack. It stores my reading glasses, and I can keep them clean and not scratched up." -- R.E. in Missouri * "I wanted to use my staple gun to attach a cord along a board for a craft project. I taped a craft stick to the bottom so that the staple would not go in all the way, leaving an allowance for the cord. I just used extra-long staples. It worked great and turned out very secure, and I didn't have to worry about a staple slicing up an electrical cord!" -- F.D. in Texas Send your tips to Now Here's a Tip, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803.

KAKIEMON PLATE An auction catalog offered a "rare Kakiemon enameled porcelain plate" from the 18th century, but there was no further explanation of the age, history or design. What is the meaning of Kakiemon? Sakaida Kakiemon (1596-1666) was a potter who worked in Japan in the early 17th century. He and his family painted porcelain made in the town of Arita. Kakiemon wares were painted over the glaze using blue, red, green, yellow and black, and sometimes with gilding. The best work was done from 1680 to 1720. The ceramic was milky white with a smooth surface. Designs were asymmetrical and sparse, so there was a lot of white space as part of the design. Most patterns were based on flower arrangements, crooked tree branches, flowers like peonies or chrysanthemums, or flowering fruit trees. One famous pattern included quail.

*** For more collecting news, tips and resources, visit www. Kovels.com (c) 2018 King Features Synd., Inc. This Meissen Kakiemon-style plate auctioned for $6,500. It was made about 1740 and has the crossed swords mark in blue. very different in shape and glaze; only the decoration is old. *** Q: I'd like to know the value of a violin that is about 100 years old. The inscription inside reads "Copy of Antonius Stradivarius, made in Czechoslovakia." What is it worth?

The Kakiemon style was so popular, it was copied by many English and German factories, and 19th-century copies are very similar to early designs. A collector today may identify a plate as Kakiemon if it is in the style of the early pieces. But the description used by a museum also includes the name of the European maker. Meissen (German), Chantilly and Mennecy (French), and Chelsea, Bow and Worcester (English) all made early collectible copies. Collectors pay high prices for the 18th- and early 19th-century pieces.

A: Antonio Stradivari (1644-1737) made violins, violas, cellos and other stringed instruments at his workshop in Cremona, Italy. Fewer than 600 of the original Stradivarius violins still are in existence, and they sell for several million dollars each. Thousands of copies have been made and don't sell for high prices. Your violin was made after the creation of Czechoslovakia in 1918. Recently, a violin like yours that included the case sold for $57.

A 9-inch Meissen plate made about 1740 with a tiger, bamboo and flower decoration sold at a Brunk auction for $6,500. The pattern is copied today on modern dishes. Collectors should not be confused. The new dishes are

pers mixed into it. Is the "never let your dogs eat chocolate" rule overblown? -- Tim F., Wichita, Kansas DEAR TIM: I've heard anecdotes from several readers about accidental chocolate consumption. Most of them say their pets didn't have a problem with it. But then, I'm not a veterinarian, and it's a good bet that vets see quite a few sick pets that got into a chocolate stash, particularly around the holidays.

IS CHOCOLATE REALLY A DANGER TO DOGS? DEAR PAW'S CORNER: Just after Halloween, our dog "Skipjack" got into one of my kids' candy stashes and ate everything, including the wrappers. I kept an eye on him overnight and he seemed fine, just drank water more often. The next day he was normal, other than passing a pretty loose stool with plenty of brightly colored wrap-

I recently read an article about mass-produced U.S. chocolate having less cocoa content than chocolates made elsewhere. The Food & Drug Administration requires milk chocolate to contain no less than 10 percent chocolate liquor. Compare that to the U.K., where milk chocolate must contain at least 25 percent cocoa solids. The size and weight of your pet also must be taken into account. Bigger dogs may process toxic foods more easily than small dogs. So, cheap Halloween candy consumed by a large dog may not have a noticeably negative effect. However, it's still a gamble. Another issue to consider is Xylitol, a sweetener often used in sugar-free candies. That can be a danger to dogs of any size. In short, keep candy and pets separate -- period.

I SPY: WATCHING PETS WITH SECURITY CAMERAS DEAR PAW'S CORNER: I found out recently that my son "watches" his dog while at work by monitoring him with a security camera. I don't think that's a good way to care for a pet. What's your take? -- Pat in Concord, New Hampshire DEAR PAT: While nothing replaces in-person, face-toface interaction between pet and owner, many people are unable to be with their pet during the day. Having a dog walker or pet sitter helps to ensure a pet is cared for during this time, but still doesn't replace an owner's voice. So it's not surprising that more and more owners are using today's technology to keep an eye on their pets. Video cameras and connected mobile apps allow them to check in on the house. And because some video systems have integrated speakers, those owners can even speak to their pets through the monitoring app. You can watch videos on the Internet of dogs guiltily slipping off the couch when their owner's disembodied voice calls "Off!" from an unseen speaker. But such a setup may offer a bit of comfort to a lonely pet, as well. To answer your question, remote monitoring is just fine to keep an eye on a pet's health or to see what kind of behavior they exhibit when the owner is not around. But it can't replace being there. I imagine that your son would much rather be hanging out with his dog than be stuck at the office. Send your questions, comments and tips to ask@ pawscorner.com. (c) 2018 King Features Synd., Inc.

1. When was the last time before 2016 that the Chicago Cubs won 100-plus games in a season? 2. Two major-league players each smacked a triple to reach 3,000 career hits. Name either one to do it.

That track, by the way, is used for the Biathlon, a competition that strikes many people in America as being a bit weird. Curling, we already knew was weird, but it at least reminds us of shuffleboard. For many, the Biathlon is just too foreign a concept. At least in some parts of the country or, as I learned on a radio show I hosted, college campuses.

IT'S NOT WAR, IT'S THE OLYMPICS You can learn a lot -- and argue a lot, too -- watching the Olympic Games. Really, the Olympic Games are the greatest things that the world does in concert. Some would argue the World's Fair or World Cup, but taken in its entirety they cannot match the pageantry or the sheer spectacle the Games provide. The World's Fair (next hosted by Dubai in 2020) ceased to be relevant at about the same time the ice-cream cone was invented, and a city chosen as a World Cup venue doesn't feel the impact either economically or psychologically that an Olympic host city experiences. The only time you see the world come together, all at once, holding the flag of their country and smiling is at the Olympic Games. The only other time the human race comes together en masse holding a flag, it's a war -- and they're really there to shoot you.

"The Biathlon is the most ridiculous sport there is," charged the liberal, tenured professor, aptly positioned to my left. "Skiing with guns. What's next? Hand grenades and ice dancing?" Having once dated a mountain girl, I reminded him that skiing and shooting were a perfect combination. I knew of hunters who cross-country skied while hunting grouse, for instance. There used to be a deer-hunting event in the Olympics, too. And there is little doubt that those in the biathlon are athletes. "These are the best hunters in the world. If we lived near the ice cap, these are the guys you want to have with you -- someone who can outlast their prey and take it down with one neatly placed bullet," I observed, rather astutely. Plus, I argued, target shooting was very sporting, and hunting was a great recreational pursuit. "Well, I'm vegetarian," said the young student on the discussion panel. "Why would we need guns if we didn't kill animals?"

4. When was the last time before 2016 (Kentucky's Malik Monk) that a player scored at least 47 points in a game against the University of North Carolina's men's basketball team? 5. The Vegas Golden Knights, in their inaugural NHL season (2017-18), set a record with an eight-game winning streak. Name either of the two teams that won five in a row in their first NHL season. 6. Who did the U.S. men's hockey team beat in the final game to secure the Olympic gold medal in 1960? 7. Brooks Koepka, in 2017, tied a men's U.S. Open record for lowest score to par (16 under) in winning the event. Who else did it?

Grapefruits are one of the only citrus strains that came from the West Indies, not Southeast Asia. Grapefruit is a hybrid of a pummelo (citrus grandis) and the sweet orange (citrus sinensis). In 1823, grapefruit made its way to the United States in the form of seeds brought by either Spanish or French settlers to Florida. It is believed that grapefruit were brought to South Texas by visiting Spanish missionaries. Grapefruit gets its name because the fruit grows in bunches, like grapes.

NEW WAYS TO USE GRAPEFRUIT It's grapefruit season, and my home state of Texas has a bountiful crop of the bittersweet fruit featuring white, pink and red varieties. Pink and red grapefruit get their rosy blush from lycopene, the same antioxidant found in tomatoes. The numerous varieties available include Ruby Red, Pink, Flame, Thompson, White Marsh, Star Ruby, Duncan and Pummelo HB.

Grapefruit-growing season lasts from October through May; however, since they keep so well in cold storage, you can find grapefruit in stores year-round. With good air circulation, grapefruit will keep at room temperature for a week when stored in a bowl or basket. If you place grapefruit in an airtight bag in the refrigerator's crisper drawer, it can be stored for up to two months. For the juiciest grapefruit, choose one that has a red blushed skin and feels heavy for its size, with smooth, rather than bumpy, skin. Besides being a delicious treat, eating grapefruit has numerous health benefits. Grapefruit is an excellent source of vitamins A and C, is low in calories and does not significantly affect blood sugar and insulin levels. Grapefruit also is a power-packed combination of fiber, potassium, lycopene, vitamin C and choline, all of which

Depositphoto help to maintain a healthy heart and prevent against developing asthma. Since grapefruits are made up of 91 percent water and electrolytes, it is a delicious way to prevent dehydration. Drinking grapefruit juice mixed with warm water and honey is a good way to soothe a sore throat and reduce fits of coughing. Grapefruit can be used in place of oranges or lemons in most dishes that use citrus.

He is aided and abetted by fellow Republicans who have abandoned any molecule of principle. In the name of self-serving ambition, they indulge Trump's worst instincts. Actually, he doesn't have any good instincts, but they're with him, even though they know better. Of course, they'll drop him like a stone if he falters, but for the moment, since it's in their interest to go along with his immorality, they've displayed their amorality.

POINTING WHICH FINGER? You are probably asking yourself, "What was that all about?" Just because the government shutdown ended shortly after it began, it doesn't mean that it won't happen again in just a few weeks -- and it definitely doesn't mean that our great leaders in Washington covered themselves in glory. Quite the opposite. They can't even guarantee that they can handle their most rudimentary job, which is to keep the federal government functioning. When all is said and done, the bulk of the debate was about who would be held responsible for this debacle. It wasn't about the merits of the issues, but almost exclusively about how this mess could be exploited. Before they got down to business, what we witnessed was our top politicians all talking past the others, trying to push the poll numbers their way. Here we had Donald Trump marking his one-year anniversary as president by presiding over a breakdown that he had a large hand in creating. From the moment he was sworn in, actually long before that, he set a tone that makes it far too difficult to find the compromises that are essential for a democracy to operate. His insistence on constant, hateful confrontation makes civility impossible.

Meanwhile, all the Democrats do is sputter. There's no effective opposition. The party's guiding principle right now is to not be Donald Trump. Is that enough for those several hundred thousand women who organized their second annual resistance marches? Can they be counted on to turn out on Election Days 2018 and 2020, and actually vote this time against Trump and his GOP collaborators? Wouldn't it be great if they had someone to vote for? So far, the party's field of candidates seems somewhat barren ... so much so that there was a brief "Oprah for President" groundswell. The Republicans drew blood with their talking point that America's armed forces were being unfunded while Democrats refused to keep the government operating because there was no deal to include legislation that would protect the 690,000 "Dreamers" from deportation. Dreamers are the kids brought into the country when their parents snuck in. Both sides claim to be sympathetic to their plight, but for a while, Trump and his GOP accomplices have been turning on them; Trump, of course, by Twitter: "Democrats are holding our Military hostage over their desire to have unchecked illegal immigration. Can't let that happen!" Trump doesn't comprehend that the fundamental art of the deal is based on credibility ... promises must be kept. But when he makes one, the ideologues around him quickly convince him to abandon it. For now, another crisis has been temporarily averted. We'll lurch to the next one and the next one, accompanied by the constant finger pointing. Americans can do little but extend their own fingers at the lot of them. STUCK INDOORS? TRY PHOTOGRAPHY FLU HITTING SENIORS HARD THIS WINTER Flu season is cutting a wide swath this winter, and seniors are being hit hard. Depending on your source, the flu shots we were given in the fall are between 10 percent and 30 percent effective. That's not very good. The worst one this year is the Influenza A (H3N2) strain. Your protection will depend on the type of shot you got (trivalent or quadrivalent). If you're over age 65, chances are you were given the highdose trivalent, which produces a better immune response. To keep tabs on how the flu is moving through your state, go online to your state's department of health. Many of the sites have weekly updates showing lab-verified flu statistics, flu-like illness stats, hospitalizations and deaths. Or you can check the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Influenza Surveillance Report. Look for the USA map and click on your state. You'll also see that the age range that's being hit the hardest is age 65 and over, followed by those in the 50-64 age range. One of the best ways to fend off the flu is to wash your hands frequently, especially after you've been out. At the grocery store, make use of sanitizing wipes on cart handles, or slather the handles with alcohol-based hand sanitizer. When you get home, wash your hands before you put away the groceries, and even before you pet the dog or cat that's been waiting for you. Other helpful ideas are to use your own pen at the bank. The most fun I've had this winter is studying digital photography as I stay home avoiding the cold weather, and the flu and crowds. Setting up indoor studios, experimenting with lighting on vintage glassware and corralling the pets for a photo shoot -- it's been a great way to develop a new hobby. Why photography? It can strengthen our memory as we need to remember settings and pay attention to composition. It can give us pleasure and raise self-esteem as we (and others) appreciate our results. Photography is art, and it awakens our creativity. Best of all, for now, it can be done indoors. If you want to step up from snapping pics with a cellphone, try taking a free online photography course to get ideas about what kind of camera you might want. Explore one of the free online classes through Harvard Extension School, or check YouTube. Focus on those that produce pictures that are most attractive to you. Call your local camera store and ask for recommendations about classes and cameras. Go online and look for "Digital Photography for Seniors for Dummies," by Mark Justice Hinton, or other photography books for seniors. You'll learn how to select photo equipment in your price range, set up shots, handle light and more. If you need to buy a camera, do you want a big camera or a small one? You can find excellent compact pointand-shoot cameras that will fit in your pocket for a few hundred dollars. If you want a bigger Digital Single-Lens Reflex (DSLR) camera, learn what different lens can do. Explore stock photography websites to get ideas for indoor photography you can do now. By the time warm weather returns, you'll be ready to go outdoors with your new skills. (c) 2018 King Features Synd., Inc.

ANSWER: I could not find any peer-reviewed literature that supports the use of Prevagen for Alzheimer's disease or other neurological disease. The manufacturer has unpublished data on its website that suggests there may be a benefit in memory. There is also a study in rats that suggests the active protein, apoaequorin, may protect nerve cells against loss of glucose and oxygen. This protein was originally identified from luminescent jellyfish but is made synthetically in Prevagen. The rat research result is surprising, since proteins are normally broken down in the GI tract, and would not be expected to have activity in the brain. There are reports made to the Food and Drug Administration of serious adverse events from this product. A supplement is not required to show its benefit; in fact, the product information for Prevagen clearly states that it is "not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease." I don't recommend using this product until there is clear, peer-reviewed evidence that it is better than placebo. In my mind, taking any treatment -- drug or supplement -- to prevent a condition requires the highest level of certainty. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 50-year-old female. How accurate are the results of fecal blood tests? In May, then July, I saw what looked like blood in my stool. My GP ordered the fecal blood test, three smears over three days.

Results negative. Then in November I saw it again. My doctor said since the fecal test showed no blood, there is no blood. My sister had colon cancer at age 45. I have had pre-cancerous polyps removed every three years for the past 10 years. Can I trust the fecal blood test results? -- S.C. ANSWER: The fecal occult blood test uses an enzyme that causes a color change in the presence of heme, a component of hemoglobin, the major protein in blood. Although the fecal blood results are pretty accurate, they can be erroneous in two ways: a false positive and a false negative. A false positive means the stool test is positive when there is no blood. This can happen from eating raw vegetables (many types, especially turnips and radishes) and meat. A false negative can happen in the presence of large amounts of vitamin C, but more importantly, many lesions of the colon, including colon cancer, bleed only intermittently.

search published online in Food & Nutrition Research. Researchers compared outcomes from three different meals: one high in animal protein, another high in plantbased protein, and one plant-based, low-protein meal. Out of 43 participants, those who consumed the plantbased, high-protein meal felt more satisfied while consuming fewer calories, compared with those who consumed the meal high in animal protein. The low-protein meal was as satiating and palatable as the animal-based, high-protein meal. Researchers suspect high fiber intake as a possible mechanism behind the satiety. This study supports previous data on bean consumption and weight management.

HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE IN MOTHERS LINKED TO CHILDHOOD OBESITY Hypertensive disorders during pregnancy affect children’s obesity risk, according to a study published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism. Researchers followed 88,406 mother-child pairs and tracked blood pressure measurements. Mothers with higher blood pressure readings during the second and third trimesters increased overweight and obesity risk in their children by 49 percent and 14 percent, respectively. The authors suggest clinicians monitor blood pressure throughout pregnancy, as results also showed changes in blood pressure between the first and third trimesters affected children’s obesity risk.

In my opinion, someone with a history like yours, including precancerous polyps and a family history of colon cancer, should have a colonoscopy as the screening test rather than stool cards. INFLAMMATORY FOODS LINKED TO COLORECTAL CANCER Inflammation-promoting products, such as red and processed meats, play a role in colorectal cancer development, according to a study published in JAMA Oncology. Researchers compared dietary habits with cancer incidence for 121,050 participants over 26 years and rated their diets for their inflammatory potential. Pro-inflammatory products included processed meats, red meat, organ meats, and sodas. Men and women who consumed more of these products were 44 and 22 percent more likely to develop colorectal cancer, respectively, compared with those who consumed the least. These findings highlight the importance of diet in cancer development. The authors suggest clinicians focus on interventions to lower inflammation as a preventive measure for colorectal cancer. Arctic Circle, is the world leader in yield for tomato production, producing 144,352 tons of tomatoes per square mile under cultivation. * In 1900, a prairie dog colony was found in Texas. That's not surprising -- prairie dogs are fairly common out West -but this colony was unique. Researchers say it was the largest colony ever discovered, providing a home to 400 million prairie dogs and stretching over 25,000 square miles. * The first seven presidents of the United States were not born American citizens. * It was Italian novelist, philosopher and university professor Umberto Eco who made the following sage observation: "Fear prophets and those prepared to die for the truth, for as a rule they make many others die with them, often before them, at times instead of them." * Those who make the finest wigs from human hair typically avoid buying hair from Americans. Evidently, hair grown in the United States is more likely to have damage caused by hairspray, hairdryers, dyes and pollutants. * You might be surprised to learn that the tiny nation of the Netherlands, located barely 1,000 miles from the

Evidently, that high-pitched sound carries better than low-pitched barking in the dense forests where it lives. * Third-century Saint Lawrence of Rome was martyred for his faith by being roasted alive on a gridiron. I suppose it makes a certain kind of sense, then, that he's the patron saint of cooks and tanners.

* If you're not in a romantic mood as Valentine's Day approaches, you might want to consider reviving the vinegar valentine popular in the 19th century. Rather than conveying love and affection, these insulting missives -- usually sent anonymously, for obvious reasons -- were dripping with sarcasm and black humor. Some were intended to discourage unwanted suitors, but others were just mean, accusing the recipient of being too aggressive (for women) or too submissive (for men) or of putting on airs, among other things. There were even occupation-specific cards targeted at doctors, salesladies, artists, etc. According to an article in Smithsonian magazine, in the mid-1800s, these vinegar valentines accounted for half of all valentine sales in the United States. * Those who study such things say that 20 percent of American men have spent at least one night in jail. *** Thought for the Day: "One of the truest tests of integrity is its blunt refusal to be compromised." -- Chinua Achebe (c) 2018 King Features Synd., Inc.
