WOMEN INVENTORS by Kathy Wolfe Thomas Edison, Alexander Graham Bell, and Benjamin Franklin are all big names in the world of inventions. But how about some of the more unknown names and creations? This week, in honor of National Women Inventors’ Month, Tidbits focuses on some of the less familiar names and inventions, all originated by women. • The very first patent awarded to a woman was for a process of weaving straw with silk or thread for hat-making. President James Madison signed the patent for Connecticut resident Mary Dixon Kies in 1809. Her technique was especially valuable in the manufacture of reasonably-priced work bonnets. Unfortunately, a change in fashion kept her from profiting much from her invention, and she died penniless in 1837. The previous year, her original patent file was destroyed in a fire at the U.S. Patent Office. • The first two African-American women to receive patents both invented items to make home life easier. Washington, D.C. resident Judy Reed received her patent in September of 1884 for a dough kneader and roller. Unable to read or write, Judy signed Patent No. 305,474 with an “X.” Ten months later, Sarah E. Goode, who owned a furniture store in Chicago, was awarded a patent for a clever folding bed that could be transformed into a desk. • In 1850, 12-year-old Margaret Knight was working at a New Hampshire textile mill when she witnessed the injury of a co-worker by a faulty piece of equipment. She was inspired to create a device that would automatically stop a machine if something was caught in it, an invention that was put to use in mills while Margaret was still a teenager. In her 30s, Margaret went to work at Massachusetts’ Columbia Paper Bag Company. At that time, paper bag bottoms were not flat, and Margaret concluded that a bag with a flat bottom would be much easier to load items. At age 33, she received one of her 27 patents, for a machine that cut, folded, and glued the shopping bags, eliminating the need for assembly by hand. Margaret’s other patents included a shoe-manufacturing machine, a rotary engine, an internal combustion engine, a numbering machine and a dress shield that protected women’s garments from perspiration stains. Her obituary in 1914 described her as a “woman Edison.” • Another ingenious 12-year-old girl invented an apparatus that was of immense help to people with communication disabilities. In the mid-1980s, Canadian Rachel Zimmerman designed a software program that enabled continued on page 2

The user touches the various symbols using a special touch pad, and Zimmerman’s Blissymbol Printer transcribes them into written language. The printer started out as a school science fair project, and moved on to competition at the World Exhibition of Achievement of Young Inventors, winning the silver medal. After completing degrees in physics and space studies, she works for NASA, helping them to mold their innovations to fit the needs of the disabled. • Maria Beasley’s first invention was patented in 1878 for a barrel-hooping machine, which enabled manufacturers to make 1,500 barrels a day, an invention that netted Beasley a small fortune. She also was responsible for a coffee-brewing system using a filter made of thick, absorbent paper punched with holes. She patented the filtering method in 1908 and founded a company that is still in existence today. Foot warmers, cooking pans, a steam generator and a device that keeps trains from being derailed were all patented by Beasley. But it was her invention of the life raft, patented in 1882 that made her famous. She improved upon her raft design twice, and obtained patents in Britain as well as the U.S. It was Beasley’s life rafts that were used on the Titanic. • It was during a visit to New York City in 1902 that Alabama native Mary Anderson conceived the idea of a vehicle window cleaning device. While riding the trolley on a cold drizzly day, Mary noticed that the driver had to open the windows of the streetcar in order to see. Upon returning home, she devised a hand-operated device with a swinging arm and rubber blade operated by the driver from inside the vehicle. She was granted Patent No. 743,801 in 1903 for her invention. By 1916, windshield wipers were standard equipment for American

automobiles. Unfortunately, Mary was unable to cash in on her idea to any great degree. Manufacturing firms rejected her application, saying, “We do not consider it to be of such commercial value as would warrant our undertaking its sale.” Having been granted a 17-year patent, it expired in 1920. In 1917, another woman, Charlotte Bridgwood patented the automatic wiper. • Prior to World War II, office workers typed on manual typewriters, with ribbons that made erasing mistakes easy. However, with the widespread use of electric typewriters and their new carbon-film ribbons, errors could no longer be corrected with an eraser. In the early 1950s, Bette Nesmith Graham, a secretary at Texas Bank and Trust, observed painters decorating the bank’s windows for the holidays. When a mistake was made, the painters painted over the blunder with another layer of paint. Graham tried using a white, water-based tempera paint on her typing errors, and the idea of white-out was born. She continued to experiment with the concoction and in 1956, she sold her first batch of “Mistake Out.” It didn’t take long until she was bottling the product full-time, working from her home in Dallas, enlisting the help of her son and his friends. By 1958, Graham had a patent in hand and had renamed the invention Liquid Paper. Nine years later, she had a new corporate headquarters and production plant, with annual sales of more than a million units. Graham maintained the company until 1979 when she sold it to the Gillette Corporation for $47.5 million. Sad to say, Bette passed away just six months later at age 56. • Dr. Guiliana Tesoro was an organic chemist who worked in the fiber and textile industry. With 125 patents to her credit, we are in debt to Dr. Tesoro for flame-resistant fabrics, static-resistant fibers, and permanent press textiles. Born in Italy, Tesoro immigrated to the United States in 1939 when she was denied admittance to Italy’s university system under their Fascist Racial Laws. She attended Yale University, graduating at the young age of 21.

Adams founded "Group f/64," which was dedicated to promoting deep-focus photography and the use of "straight" images free from darkroom trickery. * On Feb. 24, 1917, British authorities give the U.S. a copy of an official coded message from Germany that Mexico should be asked to enter a war against the U.S. as a German ally. In return, Germany promised to restore to Mexico the lost territories of Texas, New Mexico and Arizona.
* On Feb. 19, 1942, right after Pearl Harbor, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signs Executive Order 9066, authorizing the removal of any or all people "as deemed necessary or desirable." By June, more than 110,000 Japanese Americans on the West Coast were relocated to remote internment camps. * On Feb. 23, 1954, a group of children in Pennsylvania receive the first injections of the new polio vaccine developed by Dr. Jonas Salk. Although highly successful, a single faulty batch of the vaccine caused a sudden outbreak of 200 cases. * On March 1, 1961, President John Kennedy issues an executive order establishing the Peace Corps. Although many in Congress and the U.S. public, were skeptical about the program’s costs and the effectiveness, thousands of young Americans flocked to serve in dozens of nations. * On Feb. 22, 1980, the underdog U.S. hockey team, made up of college students, defeats the fourtime defending gold-medal winning Soviet team at the Olympic Winter Games in New York. The Soviet squad fell to the American team 4-3 before a frenzied crowd of 10,000 spectators. * On Feb. 26, 1993, a bomb explodes in the parking garage beneath the World Trade Center in New York City. A: The half-hour mockumentary, which spoofs shows such as "Making a Murderer" and "Serial," has been renewed for an eight-episode second season by the streaming giant. Scheduled to air sometime this year (no date as yet), season two again will feature high-school student and burgeoning documentarian Peter Maldonado (Tyler Alvarez) as he tries to solve a mystery at a different school with a new set of students. As you'll recall, season one centered on the mystery of who spray-painted penises on 23 teachers' cars at Peter's school, with Peter's aim to vindicate accused vandal Dylan Maxwell. While the storyline might seem juvenile on the surface, the execution of the story is anything but. The series is a brilliantly amusing (and heartbreaking) look at high-school life, social pressures and societal pigeonholing -- all set on the backdrop of a fascinating mystery. *** Q: With the recent reboots of "Will and Grace," "Full House" and "Roseanne," etc., are there any new/old shows to add to the redux list? -- Michael T. in Florida A: It seems that everything old is new again. The latest '80s/'90s sitcom to get the green light for another go-round is the astoundingly ahead-of-its-time newsroom sitcom "Murphy Brown." CBS has given the order for a 13-episode season, which will star Candice Bergen and have creator Diane English on board. According to deadline.com: "Talks are underway with original cast members to return." Now all we need is a new iteration of "Family Ties" (imagine what intelligent writers could do to skewer the current administration) and "Designing Women," and I'm all set!
*** Q: Do you have any news about "House of Cards"? I was so worried it would be canceled after the sexual-misconduct news surrounding Kevin Spacey was revealed. -- Wanda B., via email A: As I've reported, "House of Cards" will be back for its sixth and final season, with Kevin Spacey having nothing whatsoever to do with the production. This last season will focus on Robin Wright's character, President Claire Underwood, and will have eight episodes instead of its usual 13. This season also will see some new faces: Academy Award-nominated actors Diane Lane and Greg Kinnear have been tapped to play siblings, but that's all we know about their characters as of this writing. And some more news that absolutely thrills me is that "Unreal" star Constance Zimmer is returning to her pivotal role of investigative reporter Janine Skorsky. Word has it she will play a BIG role in this upcoming season. Something tells me she might be trying to blow the lid off all the nefarious doings of those dastardly wonderful Underwoods. Patricia Clarkson, Campbell Scott, Michael Kelly, Jayne Atkinson, Boris McGiver and Derek Cecil also will return to wrap up the series. This can take awhile and be especially frustrating with strong-willed dogs, but as you know, the consequences of eating unknown stuff off the ground can be deadly. Not to alarm those who are new to the dog training game: Dogs often eat things we would never come close to as humans, and most of the time these things pass through their systems with little to no trouble. But a splintered chicken bone or a piece of cloth -- these can cause a lot of problems with the digestive system and send your pet to the emergency veterinarian. During his refresher training, keep Bandit on the leash during your walk and when training. Work on the "sit" command. Dr. Sophia Yin recommends treat-based training as you move into the "leave it" command training. One of the guys that works with Frank exclaimed to me that, get this, Frank was going down to Florida with another Eagles fan so he could watch the game on the beach. Not that there was anything wrong with that, it just seemed a little odd. Some Philadelphians behave like a bunch of crabs in a pot -- whenever one of them tries to leave, they get clawed back into the boil.
PHILLY FANATIC One of the best parts of not being a Philadelphia sports fan is that you get to watch Philadelphia sports fans from a neutral vantage point ... something many Philly sports fans are trained at spotting and keying in on. Take Frank, for instance. I work with Frank. The Eagles had beaten Minnesota badly a few days before. When Frank saw me, he stood in front of me and said, "Sooo ... what do you think?" I had no earthly idea what he was talking about. His manner of dress? Did he get a new haircut or handbag? What? "The Iggles!" he said with a special type of smile. It was the smile of hope and pride and trepidation all mixed together in one facial expression at once. For a half-century, Frank had rooted for the Eagles. Week after week, he dissected the previous game and upcoming contest in ways the most practiced and studied football analyst from the NFL Network or ESPN could never do. Now they were on the cusp. "I think that the Eagles better not keep it close in the fourth quarter," I started to say. Then I caught the look in his eyes. It was the kind of look a kid gives you when he finds a stray puppy and asks if he can keep it, pleeeeease. Seeing this, I quickly added that I thought the Eagles had the superior defensive line and better running game,
Frank again smiled with wide eyes. "Do you think they'll have the parade on Tuesday, so I can get back in time to be there?" Yes, I surmised that the Eagles would need to wait at least one day and let the city call up a battalion or regiment of anti-riot police. "Aha! So you think we're gonna win!" A pause then a meek, "Right?" There was plenty the Eagles did right during Super Bowl LII, but there was plenty to nitpick too. For example: Chris Collinsworth announced the game as if he was in a locked room with a bunch of Patriot terrorists that had guns trained on him. Did Dodge really think Martin Luther King's anti-consumerism speech was a great vehicle to sell vehicles? (Apparently so.) And did anyone ever stop to ask Bill Belichick why he felt it necessary to wear that ridiculous cut-sleeved sweatshirt, that he was a Super Bowl coach and not an itinerate hobo who just got fired off the line of a bad roadside diner?

PINEAPPLE Healthy and delicious! Tidbits’ focus this week is on the pineapple, a tropical plant with origins in South America. • Although pineapples seem to have originated in South America, in 1493, Christopher Columbus happened on to them on the Caribbean island of Guadalupe and brought them back to Spain, calling them pina de Indes, meaning “pine of the Indians,” because of the fruit’s resemblance to pine cones. Explorer Ferdinand Magellan discovered pineapples in Brazil in 1519, and by 1555, the fruit was being successfully exported to England, folia, lowed soon after by exports to India, Asia, and the West Indies. Captain James Cook in0. troduced pineapple to Hawaii around 1770. me • We might think that most pineapples come ld’s from Hawaii, but the majority of the world’s st pineapples actually come from Southeast Asia, the Philippines, and Thailand. • A pineapple isn’t a single fruit, but rather a group of berries that have fused together around the core. Approximately 200 flowers, varying in color from lavender to bright red, join together to create a sin-gle fruit. The fruit takes about two years to ple to mature, and it’s not unusual for a pineapple d produce for reach 20 lbs. (9.1 kg). The plant can live and up to 50 years. • Pineapples are rich in bromelain, an enzyme that produces many health benefits, including anti-inflammato-
ry, muscle relaxant, and digestive aid properties. Bromelain also contains chemicals that can slow the growth of tumor cells. Pineapple can help arthritis pain and they are also a good source of Vitamin C, essential for immune system health. • The difference in color of pineapples is not an indication of their ripeness, but rather where they were grown. A green pineapple and a golden brown one can both be ready to eat. Once they’ve been harvested, pineapples do not continue to ripen. Leaving it on the kitchen counter for a week will not cause it to ripen more. In fact, a fully ripe pineapple is very perishable and should be eaten within two days if left at room temperature and up to a week if refrigerated. The sweetest part is the outermost flesh, so the skin should be sliced off the sides as thinly as possible. • James Drum Drummond Dole moved to Hawaii in star 1899 and started up a 60-acre (24-ha) pineapple plantation in 1900. MORE CREATIVE WOMEN •Carnegie Mellon University graduate Stephanie Kwolek had a 40-year-long career at DuPont Chemical, where she worked on formulating new synthetic fibers. In 1965, as she worked with a liquid crystal solution of polymers, she came up with a lightweight and durable new fiber that came to be known as Kevlar. Kevlar is best known for its use in bulletproof vests and military helmets, but it is also a component in bicycle tires, sports equipment, frying pans, fiber-optic cables, musical instruments, and building materials. This synthetic is five times stronger than steel. •Patsy Sherman and her co-worker at 3M, Sam Smith, received a patent for “block and graft copolymers containing water-solvatable polar groups and fluoroaliphatic groups.” So what in the world is that? It’s Scotchgard, the most widely-used stain repellent and soil removal product! The invention came about by accident. Sherman and Smith had been given the task of developing a new kind of rubber for jet aircraft fuel lines. As they worked in the 3M lab in 1953, an assistant dropped a bottle of synthetic latex, which splashed onto the assistant’s white canvas tennis shoes. Sherman and Smith observed that the compound didn’t alter the shoes, but it also couldn’t be washed away by any solvents. Not only that, it actually repelled water, oil, and other liquids. In 1956, Scotchgard was introduced for fabric, and the chemist duo continued research, expanding the line to include carpet treatment and auto upholstery cleaner. Sherman and Smith went on to obtain 13 patents related to polymers.

NEW SCAM TARGETS YOUR SOCIAL SECURITY CHECK Here we go again: yet another scam aimed at seniors. This one involves Social Security. It's almost believable, so we need to be extra careful. What the scammers want is to steal your money. This is how it works: Someone will call and pretend to be from the Social Security Administration. You'll be told that you're about to get an increase in your benefits. All they need to do, say the scammers, is to verify all your personal information. After all, they say, you do want to get your extra benefits, right? You'll be asked for your date of birth, Social Security number, banking information and more. Armed with all this personal data, it's easy for the thieves to have your money directed to them at a new address or bank account for direct deposit. Until your benefits don't show up, you'll never know that something has happened to your money. Something to remember if you get a call that's supposedly from Social Security: It already has all your information. It's not likely that Social Security will ever call you anyway, but if they do, there's no need to tell them anything. If you ever have questions about whether a call is legitimate, be safe: hang up immediately. Then call So-

SCAMMERS AT THE DOOR The guy who showed up today came to the wrong door: mine. I pegged him for a scammer before he even said a word. And I was right. The only thing I didn't know was what kind of scam it was. Turned out it was utilities. The guy claimed he was at the door at the request of my electric company to update my records. Then he said he only needed to scan my previous utility bill. Wrong. I'd read about these guys. First, I knew that my electric company didn't send him. Second, if I'd showed him my bill, he would have had my name and account number and would know what rate I pay. The scam works like this: With all that information, they would offer me a ridiculously low rate. If I signed up, before I knew it, my electric bill would have gone up 400 percent. I'd be locked into a contract and would have to pay a lot of money to get out of it. If I didn't pay, they would send the bill to a collection agency, and it would show up on my credit report. So I shut the door in his face. This particular scammer has a long history in other states, and there are class- action suits and investigations. They've targeted seniors, saying the local utility company had changed names and new information is needed, falsified signatures to sign up, come to the door
again and again, misrepresented who they worked for, lied about rates and much, much more. If someone shows up at your door with a clipboard and a photo ID hanging from their neck, it's probably a scammer. If they ask for any information, it's probably a scammer. Just shut the door. COPD IS DOUBLE-WHAMMY DEAR DR. ROACH: I have been told that I have COPD. The lung doctor said that he's pleased with my X-ray and will see me next year. My concern is whether this will get worse. I'm scared to death. I have difficulty catching my breath. I quit smoking about four years ago. I know I can't repair the damage that has been done, but is there anything I can do to keep this disease from getting worse? -- T.C. ANSWER: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in North America is due mostly to cigarette smoking, but cooking fires, asthma and other rare conditions also may predispose people to COPD. Lung function decreases with aging in all adults, but in people with COPD (a combination of emphysema and chronic bronchitis), the worsening of lung function over time is critical because of the loss of pulmonary reserve. You already have done by far the most important thing you can do to prevent further damage: quit smoking. Avoiding other air pollutants (especially secondhand smoke) also may help. Regular physical activity seems to slow progression of COPD. Treatment with inhaled steroids reduces airway inflammation and somewhat slows progression of the decline in lung function in COPD. Inhaled steroids also improve symptoms and reduce exacerbations. However, they do not have a significant effect on mortality. X-rays are one way of following COPD, but measuring lung function through pulmonary-function tests is a much better way of determining severity of disease. Your lung specialist can give you more-personalized information about your illness with those results. *LOW-FAT DIET PREVENTS PANCREATIC CANCER IN OVERWEIGHT WOMEN A low-fat diet may prevent pancreatic cancer in overweight or obese women, according to a study published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute. Researchers compared cancer incidence rates for 48,835 postmenopausal women assigned to either a low-fat diet, in which fat intake was limited to 20 percent of daily energy and daily servings of fruits, vegetables, and grains were increased, or a control group. Those in the intervention group had fewer cases of pancreatic cancer, compared with the control group. After reviewing 95 studies, researchers concluded that eating just 2.5 servings of fruits and vegetables combined per day could reduce one’s risk for heart disease, stroke, all-cause mortality, and cancer by 8, 16, 8, and 10 percent, respectively. Eating 7.5 servings of fruits and vegetables per day offered the greatest protection against cancer, while eating 10 servings offered the greatest protection against heart disease, stroke, and premature death from any cause. These amounts are well above the common recommendation of 5 servings per day.

Researchers followed 1,320,555 participants aged 18 or older for two years and tracked diabetes and hypertension incidence rates. They accounted for geographic location and rural vs. urban settings, age and sex, education and marital status, and income. Despite slight variations for both conditions across sociodemographic groups, results showed high rates overall across age and location. But in 1971, Congress decided that instead of celebrating the real birthdays of President Washington and President Abraham Lincoln (Feb. 12), there would a Monday celebration for both. Why Monday? To give everyone a three-day weekend away from work. Feb. 20 was chosen because it was between the two real birthdays.

A President Washington doll made after 1880 looks like Washington in his presidential years. The doll is made of cloth with pressed and oil-painted features, and gray hair worn in a ponytail. His eyes are blue. The doll is dressed in a silk suit with a lace jabot and wears a tri-corn hat, black stockings and shoes with buckles. The costume is a familiar one.

It was made by Martha Jenks Chase, who started making portrait dolls in her backyard about 1880. A 25-inch tall Chase Washington doll sold in 2016 at a Theriault's auction in Las Vegas for $3,080.

A: This mark was used about 1895 to 1917 by Lewis Straus & Sons, importers located in New York City. Carlsbad was part of Austria until after World War I, when it became part of Czechoslovakia. Today the town is called Karlovy Vary and is part of the Czech Republic. Several factories in Austria, Bavaria and Germany used "Carlsbad" in their mark. Many pieces were exported to the United States in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Sets of china are hard to sell, but you can enjoy the dishes for their sentimental value.
