PULITZER PRIZE by Kathy Wolfe Every year, more than 2,400 entries are submitted for the Pulitzer Prize competition. This week, Tidbits keeps you in the know on this celebrated group of awards. • The Pulitzer Prizes were established in 1917 by the generosity of newspaper publisher Joseph Pulitzer. Born in Hungary, Pulitzer came to America in 1864 at age 17, with his passage paid for by Massachusetts military recruiters who were looking for soldiers during the Civil War. He actually ended up in the First New York Lincoln Cavalry, serving for eight months. • After the war, Pulitzer tried whaling and waiting tables without success. Settling in St. Louis, Missouri, he was a regular patron at the city library, studying English during every spare minute. After being deceived by a job offer hoax, Pulitzer wrote a short story about the ruse, which he sold to a small local newspaper, and soon was working as a reporter. At age 25, he had already purchased a share in that paper, the Westliche Post, a stake he sold for a good profit the following year. Six years later, Pulitzer bought two other newspapers, the St. Louis Dispatch and the St. Louis Post, merging them into the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, a paper that is still that city’s daily newspaper.

• At age 37, the now-wealthy Pulitzer bought the New York World, and his two major newspapers became noted for crusading against dishonest government, big business, and public corruption. • Pulitzer also had a place in politics, beginning as a state legislator at age 22, going on to the U.S. House of Representatives before he was 40. • Because he believed that journalists should be trained at the university level, Pulitzer set aside $2 million to establish a graduate school for journalism at New York’s Columbia University, as well as calling for a prize system to honor creative excellence. Pulitzer died in 1911, and the Columbia University School of Journalism was continued on page 2 ...

PULITZER PRIZE (continued):
established in 1912, and the Pulitzer Prizes were first awarded five years later. • Pulitzer had specified four awards in journalism, four in letters and drama, one in education, and four traveling scholarships. A poetry category was added in 1922, photography in 1942, and a music category in 1943. The Pulitzer Prize for non-fiction was awarded for the first time in 1962 to Theodore White’s The Making of the President, 1960. The book recounted the presidential campaign of John F. Kennedy from the primaries to his victory over Richard Nixon. It remained on the best seller list for more than 40 weeks. • Today there are 21 categories: Public Service, Local Reporting of Breaking News, Investigative Reporting, Explanatory Reporting, Local Reporting, National Affairs, International Affairs, Feature Writing, Commentary, Criticism, Editorial Writing, Cartoons, Breaking News Photography, Feature Photography, Fiction, History, Biography/Autobiography, Original Verse, Nonfiction, Theatrical Play, and Musical Composition. There are 102 judges who make three nominations in each of the 21 categories. • The formal announcement of the Pulitzers is made each April, and presented by the president of Columbia University. • Each winner receives a $15,000 cash award, (raised in 2017 from $10,000), with the exception of the winner in Public Service journalism, a prize that is always awarded to a newspaper, not to an individual. The newspaper receives a gold medal. Joseph Pulitzer’s requirements for meritorious public service reporting included “cleanness of style, moral purpose, sound reasoning, strict accuracy, and the accomplishment of some public good commanding respect.”

• The very first Pulitzer for fiction was awarded to Ernest Poole for His Family, a novel about the life of a middle-class New York City widower and his three daughters in the 1910s. • Many of the titles of the winners for novels are familiar, including Gone with the Wind (1937), To Kill a Mockingbird (1961), The Color Purple (1983), and Lonesome Dove (1986). • The 1974 photography winner depicted a United States Air Force Lt. Colonel reunited with his family at Travis Air Force Base after spending five-and-a-half years in a North Viet Nam POW camp. Part of his imprisonment was spent sharing a cell with future Senator John McCain. Photographer Sal Veder captured the image of Robert Stirm and his family, and entitled it “Burst of Joy.” • A photo of Martin Luther King Jr.’s widow and child taken at his funeral captured the 1969 photography Pulitzer. • Although the prize for music is given to an American composition that had its first performance or recording during the year, in 2008, a special prize was awarded to singer-songwriter bob Dylan for his “profound impact on popular music and American culture, marked by lyrical compositions of extraordinary poetic power.” • The prize for Drama, one of the original prizes, is judged by a jury consisting of one academic and four critics who attend plays in New York and regional theaters throughout the year. Familiar winners include 1955’s “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof,” “The Diary of Anne Frank” (1956), “Driving Miss Daisy” (1988), and more recently, “Rent” (1996), and “Hamilton” (2017). • Only three writers have won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction more than once – Booth Tarkington in 1919 and 1922, William Faulkner in 1955 and 1963, and John Updike in 1982 and 1991. Faulkner also was awarded a Nobel
Prize for Literature in 1949. His famous novels include The Sound and the Fury and As I Lay Dying. • Four individuals have received four prizes, poet Robert Frost, playwright Eugene O’Neill, and screenwriter and biographer Robert E. Sherwood. In addition to his plays, Sherwood also served as a speechwriter for President Franklin D. Roosevelt. His 1949 Pulitzer was for a biography of Roosevelt. • Pilot Charles Lindbergh penned his autobiography in 1953, chronicling the events surrounding his 1927 33hour solo trans-Atlantic flight in his single-engine, single-seat monoplane from Long Island to Paris. The book, The Spirit of St. Louis won the Pulitzer Prize in 1954. • Prizes for cartoons are awarded to those editorial drawings that often exhibit the humorous or satirical side of politics, foreign affairs, and social issues with a sharp wit. Five cartoonists have won the award three times. • The Pulitzer for Investigative Reporting was established in 1953, and has included exposure of corruption, unsafe hospital conditions, unsafe prescription drugs, and narcotics rings, as well as providing the proof necessary to free those wrongfully convicted of violent crimes.

* On March 30, 1775, King George III formally endorses the New England Restraining Act, requiring New England colonies to trade exclusively with Great Britain. Another rule banned colonists from fishing in the North Atlantic. * On March 16, 1802, the United States Military Academy -- the first military school in the United States, also known as West Point -- is founded by Congress. West Point was the site of a Revolutionary-era fort that Patriot General Benedict Arnold agreed to surrender to the British in exchange for 6,000 pounds. However, the plot was uncovered and Arnold fled to the British for protection. * On March 28, 1814, the funeral of Guillotin, the inventor and namesake of the infamous execution device, takes place in France. The machine was intended to show the intellectual and social progress of the Revolution: By killing aristocrats and journeymen the same way, equality in death was ensured. * On March 31, 1836, the first monthly installment of "The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club," by 24-year-old writer Charles Dickens, is published under the pseudonym Boz. Only 400 copies were printed, but by the 15th episode, 40,000 copies were printed. * On March 27, 1912, two Yoshina cherry trees are planted on the bank of the Potomac River, as part of a gift of 3,020 cherry trees from Japan to the United States. After World War II, cuttings were sent back to Japan to restore the Tokyo collection that was decimated by American bombing attacks during the war. * On March 18, 1942, the War Relocation Authority is created to

"Take all people of Japanese descent into custody," as well as some Germans and Italians, and put them in internment camps. One Japanese American, Gordon Hirabayashi, fought internment all the way to the Supreme Court, which ruled against him. * On March 24, 1958, Elvis Presley is inducted into the U.S. Army. He had registered for the draft in 1953, but received an education deferment (and missed the end of the Korean War). Later he received another deferment because he was filming the movie "King Creole." * On March 20, 1965, President Lyndon Johnson notifies Alabama's Gov. George Wallace that he will call up the Alabama National Guard to supervise a planned civil-rights march to protest voting discrimination against Selma's black population. * On April 1, 1984, Motown singer Marvin Gaye is shot and killed by his father as a result of a longstanding feud. The father, a preacher, was a hard-drinking cross-dresser who envied his son's success, and Marvin Jr. clearly harbored unresolved feelings toward his abusive father. * On March 26, 1997, police in Rancho Santa Fe, California, discover 39 victims of a mass suicide. They were members of the "Heaven's Gate" religious cult, whose leaders preached that suicide would allow them to leave their bodily "containers" and enter an alien spacecraft hidden behind the Hale-Bopp comet. * On March 29, 1999, the Dow Jones industrial average closes above 10,000 for the first time, at 10,006.78. HOLLYWOOD -- Don't mess with Meryl Streep! When Harvey Weinstein's attorneys, trying to get him off of racketeering charges, quoted her as saying, "He has always been respectful to me," she shot back, "Harvey Weinstein's attorneys' use of my statement -- that he was not sexually aggressive or physically abusive in our business relationship -- as evidence he was not abusive with many OTHER women is pathetic and explosive!" She added, "The criminal actions he is accused of conducting on the bodies of these women are his responsibility, and if there is any justice left in the systems, he will pay for them."

Not content to be "spaced out," Netflix also is reviving "Sabrina the Teenage Witch," with Kiernan Shipka (Sally Draper in "Mad Men") as Sabrina (played by Melissa Joan Hart from 1996-2003). Her aunts will be Miranda Otto (Eowyn in the second and third "Lord of the Rings"
films), taking over for Beth Broderick as Zelda Spellman, and Lucy Davis (Etta Candy in "Wonder Woman,") handling Caroline Rhea's role of Hilda Spellman. *** Even though CBS has Tom Selleck in the hit series "Blue Bloods," the network is intent in revisiting his days as Thomas Magnum in "Magnum, P.I. (1980-88). For the pilot to sell the series, it has cast Jay Hernandez in Selleck's star-making role. Hernandez starred in "Hostel" (2005) and the 2007 sequel, and most recently was in "Suicide Squad" (as Chato Santana/El Diablo) and "Bad Mom's Christmas," with Mila Kunis, Kristen Bell and Susan Sarandon. Finally, billionaire Bill Gates has filmed an appearance in "The Big Bang Theory" that will air later this month. In the show, Penny hosts Gates at her work, and the guys do everything they can to meet him. Gates' last sitcom appearance was in "Fraser" in 200l. Q: Can you tell me what is going on with the new "Charmed" series? -- Cassie T., via email A: Well, all three Halliwell sisters finally have been cast in The CW's "Charmed" reboot. The first iteration of this witchy series ran for eight seasons from 1998-2006 and starred Alyssa Milano, Holly Marie Combs, Shannen Dougherty and Rose McGowan (who came aboard for seasons four through eight after Shannen's character was killed off at the end of season three). This time around we have Madeleine Mantock (portraying Macy), Melonie Diaz (Mel) and Sarah Jeffery (Madison) playing the supernatural sisters who discover they are witches after the death of their mother. According to character descriptions provided by The CW: Macy is a geneticist who is described as practical, driven and brilliant, and she's completely shocked by the discovery that she's a witch. Mel is a lesbian and an outspoken activist who loses her way after her mother's death. And Madison is a bubbly college freshman whose new life as a witch conflicts with her goal of being a sorority girl. The pilot of the series is currently in preproduction, so there's no word yet on when or if it will air. *** Q: I loved the TV series based on Charlaine Harris' "Midnight, Texas" books. Will it be back for another season? -- Valentine F., via Facebook A: You can bet that NBC renewed the previous summer's No. 1 broadcast drama for another season. For those unfamiliar with the series, it's directed by Niels Arden Oplev, the visionary director of "Mr. Robot," and based on the hit book series from author Charlaine Harris ("True Blood"). The story takes place in a remote Texas

town where no one is who they seem. From vampires and witches to psychics and hit men, "Midnight" is a mysterious safe haven for those who are different. As the town members fight off outside pressures, they all band together and form a strong and unlikely family. *** READERS: There have been some release-date changes for a few big movies due out this spring. "Avengers: Infinity War" has moved up its release date from May 4 to April 27. Upon hearing that news, Warner Bros. bumped the release date of the Rock's latest sure-to-be-blockbuster "Rampage," which is based on the popular video game of the same name, from April 20 to April 13. This will give the movie a full two weeks to try to get its box-office numbers up before "Avengers" comes to take away most of its audience. Amy Schumer also posted on Instagram that her new movie, "I Feel Pretty," will open a week earlier, on April 20, instead of April 27, so as not to have to compete with the "Avengers" audience. Amy jokingly wrote, "I forgot I had a thing. 'I Feel Pretty' will now come out April 20 to avoid any Avenging!! So exciting!" DANGER LURKS ON THE INTERNET How can you keep from falling prey to online scammers? It's getting more difficult every day.
844-870-5314
* Beware putting your credit-card number on an online retail site. (Better idea: Call in your order instead. Talk to a person.)
health needs to be uppermost in our minds. Extended loneliness and grief can take its toll, if we let it, and lead to depression, elder abuse, cognitive decline and more.
* If you're on a social site, don't upload photos unless you know for certain that the location information has been stripped from them. Use a fun screen name that isn't your own name. Never announce that you'll be away on vacation. That would sound like an invitation to a scammer who can figure out where you live. (It's not difficult.)
The phrase "safety in numbers" might be one to consider. We can join groups where there are people of all ages, or at least be around people who share our interests.
* Keep the grandchildren off your computer unless you have a child safety program running, such as CyberSitter. (Better idea: Have computer games they can play, but turn off the Internet.) * Keep your privacy settings on high.
Here are a few steps to stay safe: * Step one is to slow down. Use bookmarks for the sites you regularly visit. That will keep you from accidentally typing in the wrong name in a rush. Type in even one letter wrong, and it may send you to a fake site that looks identical to the one you want to visit. Once there, you might be willing to sign in because you think you're in the right place. It's called typo-squatting, and scammers actually register domain names that are spelled incorrectly because they know there are common misspellings. Even big names like Google, Apple and Microsoft have been hit with typo-squatting. Only do banking online if you're very sure of the safety. (Better idea: Don't do online banking.) * Have a long password, at least eight characters, and be sure to have symbols and numbers in it for any site where you need to sign in.
LOSING FRIENDS AND MAKING NEW ONES If we live long enough, we'll eventually get to the age where we start losing people around us. Friends, neighbors and relatives succumb to serious illness, and our lives will never be the same. We end up going to more and more funerals. Our social networks get smaller and smaller, and that leaves us ... where? Alone ... unless we see the writing on the wall and plan ahead for our own futures. That's not to say we should turn our backs on friends of a certain age or level of health. But protecting our own

Is there a hobby you've always wanted to try? Maybe pottery or painting? Or a college class you've wanted to audit? Does the senior center host short travel expeditions, maybe to a big city for museums and shows? Do they have a weekly writing group? How about volunteering somewhere, on a regular schedule? The library can't function without daily shelving. Can you read to a morning group of toddlers? Socialize cats and dogs at the shelter? Do you like shopping enough to do deliveries from grocery stores to the homebound? Interested in a daily walking group? The point is to be out among people. Members of the upper class in ancient Egypt used copper tubing to pipe it into their homes. * GPS is a powerful tool that has changed the way we navigate the world. Of course, it's not without its prob-
lems. Take, for instance, the case of the 23-year-old Canadian woman driving through the Ontario town of Tobermory. She was a stranger there, so -- as most of us would -- she was using her GPS. Evidently, she was so intent on

following the directions provided to her that she wasn't paying attention to where those directions were taking her -- that is, until she ended up in Georgian Bay. She made it to shore safely, but her car didn't. * It seems that artist Leonardo da Vinci pioneered the paint-by-numbers style of art. He would sketch a piece, then number certain sections for his assistants to paint. * If you're planning a trip to North Carolina in June, try to make it to the small town of Spivey's Corner for the annual Hollerin' Contest. If you'd like to participate but are worried about straining your vocal cords, you can always enter the conch-blowing contest instead of one of the ones that involves actual yelling. * You might be surprised to learn that famed British author Aldous Huxley, best-known for his dystopian novel "Brave New World," was a consultant on Disney's 1951 animated film version of "Alice in Wonderland." * After the vows have been said in a traditional Korean wedding, the groom formally introduces his new wife to his parents. The bride's father-in-law then pelts the bride with red dates, which is supposed to ensure fertility. * Jazz musician Glenn Miller was the recipient of the first gold record ever awarded, for the big-band hit "Chattanooga Choo-Choo."

* You might be surprised at some of the seemingly innocuous things that arouse passions in a group of people. Take the venerable 1960s television show "Mr. Ed," for example. Evidently an evangelist named Jim Brown took issue with the show's theme song, claiming that when played backward, the tune contains the message "the source is Satan" and "someone sang this song for Satan." His preaching on the subject was so persuasive that members of a church in Ironton, Ohio, made a bonfire of recordings of the song. *** Thought for the Day: "Men of genius are often dull and inert in society, as a blazing meteor when it descends to earth, is only a stone." -- Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (c) 2018 King Features Synd., Inc.

DEAR PAW'S CORNER: This winter has been especially icy in the Northeast, and for the first time ever I noticed a cut on the front paw of my short-haired mutt, Hansel. It's on one of his paw pads and is pretty deep. I'm not sure how he cut it. I cleaned it well, but it doesn't look any better -- his pad is swollen and he doesn't like standing on it. What else can I do? -- Edgar in Providence, Rhode Island DEAR EDGAR: This is the perfect time to call the veterinarian and bring Hansel in to have it checked out. For small cuts, owners usually just need to make sure they're clean and watch for signs of infection. However, once you see or suspect infection, it's time to consult the pros. Since Hansel is limping or keeping his paw up, he's definitely uncomfortable and in pain. The vet can make sure the infection is confined to just the pad, and that Hansel isn't developing any complications. Likely, they will clean the wound again and recommend an antibiotic ointment. The vet also may recommend an oral antibiotic to prevent a more serious infection. To keep Hansel from licking the injured paw, he may have to wear what my sister-in-law likes to call the "cone

of shame," a temporary collar that looks like a lampshade. Silly as it looks, it can help the pad heal.
tempting about my arm? -- Dr. William H., Central Falls, Rhode Island
You did a great job checking Hansel's paws after every walk and cleaning off any salt and sand -- another big annoyance in the frozen north, as many pet owners can attest. Once he is fully healed, continue those daily walks outdoors. I'm sure he looks forward to them.
DEAR DR. WILLIAM: You may taste pretty good to your cat, but I think you're on the right track when you say she seems to be checking that you have not deserted her. Many experts believe that cats groom their housemates -- both felines and humans -- as a way of showing they accept you as family, that they trust you and that they are caring for you.
WHEN YOUR CAT CARES A LITTLE TOO MUCH DEAR PAW'S CORNER: I had animals all my life until my wife and dog died seven years ago. I got a cat two years ago when a neighbor moved. Last year, another neighbor gave us her cat after having a baby. The two cats -- both fixed females -- got along fine from start. What's curious is, one jumps up on my bed every night and walks up to my face. When I put my hand out to pat her, she starts licking my arm, wrist to elbow, with her sandpaper tongue! Seems she is checking that I have not deserted her! Do I taste that good? What's so
Sometimes excessive licking is a sign that a cat wants more attention. It can also be a sign of anxiety or stress. However, that seems unlikely since your cat does this routinely and seems calm. So the only question that remains is: Does it annoy you? If so, try gently redirecting the cat from your arm, maybe to snuggle against your shoulder. If it's really annoying or she doesn't stop after a few redirects, get up and walk away for a few minutes. She may eventually get the message. Send your pet care tips, questions or comments to ask@ pawscorner.com. (c) 2018 King Features Synd., Inc.

To your right you see the concession stand, where Mrs. Smith is awkwardly turning hot dogs on a grill. You know Mrs. Smith. She's a Wall Street banker and has a taste for fine French foods. You went to dinner with her and her husband and a few other couples a few months back. She wore a mink. Now she's wearing a booster T-shirt and getting yelled at for extra mustard, and she couldn't be happier. She won't do it again, but she's glad to play a part.
THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES For some, it's the longest walk they will ever make, the trek from the parking lot to the field.
My kid is concerned that we won't find the field. Relax, I said, you just look for the group that has the same color shirt as you. Besides, we're early ... there's still time for a little extra advice. "Be aggressive," I tell my son. "OK, Dag," he replies. Then he pauses. Something is wrong. "Dag?" 2. The Cleveland Indians set a record in a game in 2016 for most pitchers combining for a shutout. How many did they use?
"Yes, son?"
But sports? Surely you can. After all, you were pretty good in the day, right? Well, except for the first few years when you were afraid of the ball, but you came around. You've been prepping your kid for years, too. The first clothes you bought your kid had the logos of your favorite team. Your favorite picture of your baby was the one where they were propped up on the couch holding the red rubber football. You think about respect. Granted, you don't like the guy who is going to be coaching your kid. You've seen the way he yells at his own kid ... a 7 year old who has no clue how to play goalie and likely never will at the rate he's going. But you rationalize the situation. The coach is making a sacrifice for the kids. After all, you couldn't do it this year.
"What does 'aggressive' mean?" I explained to him that it meant putting the ball in the back of the net whenever he had a clear shot, but I am interrupted by another parent. Her kid is in blue ... not the red my kid is clad in. "Excuse me ... but I think we're playing you today. Do you know where the field is?" "You'll find it," my kid says. "Just look for the colors." He looks at the other kid and offers more advice. "Hey ... be aggressive."
3. Who was the last running back for the Titans franchise before DeMarco Murray in 2016 to throw a touchdown pass and run for a touchdown in the same game? 4. When was the last time all four No. 1 seeds in men's basketball made it to the Final Four of the NCAA Tournament? 5. Who was the last NHL player before Tampa Bay's Nikita Kucherov in 2017 to start a season by scoring in seven consecutive games? 6. Who was the first U.S. male to win a World Cup downhill skiing race?
In a world where there are too many rules, it's always fun to remember this about sports ... don't ever overthink it and always enjoy yourself. The uniforms will get dirty and the cuts and scrapes will come, but the memories will last a lifetime.
7. Golfer Phil Mickelson set a record in 2017 for most career victories (26) in the Presidents Cup. Who had held the mark?

Some will think "they grow up so fast" as their kid -- new cleats, clean uniform -- jumps out of the car and runs toward the sound of other kids laughing and yelling. You've dropped your kid off at school before, but that was different ... you figured it was for the best. After all, what did you know about teaching reading and writing and arithmetic? There are some things you can't do for your kid.

FAST FOOD FROM THE FREEZER Let's just face it, after a long day at work (or play), most of us don't want to prepare a meal. But with just a little planning, your freezer can become your favorite "fast food" place. Filling your freezer with pre-prepared meals saves time and money. It also ensures you'll be eating something that is healthier than the typical fast-food meal. When you freeze meals in advance, you control the quality of the ingredients and the amount of salt. Almost everything from appetizers for dinner parties and breakfast dishes to complete meals and desserts can be frozen in advance with the proper planning and preparation. I usually prepare all of my family's meals for the week on either Saturdays or Mondays. Sometimes I just cook all the main dishes. Then all I have to do is steam some vegetables or prepare a salad, and dinner is served. I also prepare a few extra meals -- using some of the same spices or ingredients I already have on hand -- and freeze them. By using a few freezer fast-food tips, you can serve a well-balanced meal in minutes, and save money by preparing meals in advance and freezing them. Preparing meals in advance means you'll have large amounts of food to shop for and to put away. Plan your meals, make a list and shop in advance. It's never a good idea to cook on the same day that you grocery shop. It's better to plan the shopping trip for one day and cooking for another day. This also allows you to take advantage of any sales you might find. You also can cook several

different kinds of dishes and stock your freezer so that you have enough "fast food" meals for two to six weeks. I try to use recipes with similar ingredients or cooking times so that I can chop up all the vegetables I need at one time, or bake more than one dish in the oven. You also can stock your freezer by doubling the meals you make during the week. You can serve one of the dishes and then stock your freezer with the other. Make sure you securely wrap and seal your make-ahead meals to prevent freezer burn. Write the name of the dish and the date on a label or on the plastic wrap or plastic freezer bag to make the dishes easier to identify. Using freezer- and microwave-safe divided plates is one of the best ways to store individual, homemade frozen dinners. Leftovers are the perfect choice for these frozen dinners. The divided plates make the meals easy to defrost and re-heat in the microwave. *** Angela Shelf Medearis is an award-winning children's author, culinary historian and the author of seven cookbooks. BRIGHTEN WINTRY DAYS WITH ORANGES I'll never forget the morning when a box of California sunshine appeared on our doorstep. It was a -20 degree day in Minnesota. The kids and I eagerly tore open the box to find carefully wrapped oranges, handpicked from a tree in my aunt and uncle's backyard in Visalia, California. Nothing could brighten our spirits more than this gift of citrus gold. To humor us, Uncle Carl printed his initials with a blue pen on tiny stickers and affixed one on each orange as his personal trademark, just in case we doubted their place of origin. He also included a list of fun activities. Here are some of them, along with others you may enjoy doing during these winter days when we all can use an extra dose of vitamin C and sweet goodness. --Hand out an orange to each member of the family. Touch it, squeeze it, smell it after scraping the skin. Ask your young children to describe what's inside an orange. Think of all the possibilities. --Guess the number of sections inside the orange you hold. Now, peel the orange, separate and count the sections, and find out who guessed correctly. --Talk about where oranges come from. "The grocery store" is not a correct answer!
--At snacktime or lunchtime, for easy peeling, an adult should slice off the top half-inch of the orange. Starting at the trimmed edge, make a slice through the peel down to the base. Make five or six slices going around. Your child now easily can peel the orange. --Use empty halves of oranges as lovely natural bowls for a fruit salad, sorbet or gelatin. --Keep oranges, mandarins, clementines and tangerines in easy reach on your kitchen table or counter for healthy snacking any time of day. I like to place the sunny-looking fruit in a favorite family bowl that came in a trunk from Sweden when my great-grandparents immigrated to the U.S. in the 1880s. I am quite sure oranges were a new treat to them when they arrived here. Now I tempt my family with their healthy goodness while creating a colorful centerpiece at the same time.

DEAR DR. ROACH: My mother has stage 4 cancer. She just went to a dermatologist, who performed Mohs surgery on her nose. I am BEYOND upset by this unethical behavior. The country is already deeply in debt, and Medicare is paying for this? Unconscionable! Not to mention the pain and suffering of my mother, who is now at risk of a secondary infection. I was sickened by the entire ordeal. -- J.B. ANSWER: I agree with you completely that often patients with terminal diseases receive unnecessary care. There have been studies clearly documenting this. However, the studies don't answer why, in a particular case, a physician performed these treatments, which add only pain, anxiety and expense. I suppose it is possible that the motivation is simple greed; however, I still have enough faith in my colleagues that I think that is a very unusual reason; I think it's far more likely that a specialist just doesn't see the big picture. There's an old expression that when all you have is a hammer, the whole world looks like a nail, and I think some specialists see a problem and fix it without realizing that the problem they are fixing isn't likely to ever cause symptoms. For example, primary-care doctors order unnecessary tests, especially screening tests. I see mammograms ordered for women with advanced colon or ovarian cancer who are in palliative care, and this makes no sense. I have heard some physicians mention that insurance companies monitor the frequency of "quality indicators," such as mammograms, which affect their ratings and reimbursement. That's an example of a well-meaning system motivating wrong behavior. I should emphasize that not all care for terminal patients is useless. If the goal is to improve quality of life

ROACH: I have heard of yeast infections, but I don't know what causes them. How do they affect the body, and what can be done to get rid of them? -- C.R. ANSWER: Certain yeasts, but especially the Candida species, are found on our skin, mucus membranes and GI tract. They normally live in balance with the 100 trillion or so bacteria we carry around. However, yeast can cause disease that ranges from fairly mild, like thrush of the mouth or vagina, to life-threatening, like a blood-borne, widely disseminated invasive infection. Candida infection of mucus membranes is usually caused by changes in our bacteria, especially after the use of antibiotics. The antibiotics kill the bacteria they are supposed to (hopefully), but they also may kill the healthy bacteria that assist us in digestion (leading to di-
arrhea or worse), and this allows the other bacteria and yeast to grow. Some people with genetic faults in their immune system are predisposed to chronic candida infections. These are uncommon but can be severe, and may require treatment by specialists, such as infectious disease doctors and immunologists. The life-threatening yeast infections generally happen in people with severe illness and with poor immune system function. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. INDIAN TOY CRADLE Many American Indian tribes almost lost their culture by the 1960s because of 19th- and early 20th-century U.S government rules. American Indians could be removed from their land, resettled on reservations and even have their children sent to special boarding schools to be taught a new way of life. The children were punished if they continued to practice their ceremonies or speak their native language. Children from the Potawatomi tribe went to either a boys' or girls' boarding school, where they learned English and a trade. The American Indian Religious Freedom Act passed in the 1970s led to the end of the boarding schools and the beginning of efforts to bring back the Indian culture. A recent auction sold a toy Indian cradle decorated with beads and silver buttons, but holding a European porcelain-headed doll. It was made by Millie R. Hall, who lived at a Potawatomi boarding school in 1900, an important historic source for a handmade doll. It sold for $11,070. *** Q: I'd like to know the value of a violin that is about 100 years old. The inscription inside reads "Copy of Antonius Stradivarius, made in Czechoslovakia." What is it worth? A: Antonio Stradivari (1644-1737) made violins, violas, cellos and other stringed instruments at his workshop in Cremona, Italy. Fewer than 600 of the original Stradivarius violins still are in existence, and they sell for several million dollars each. Thousands of copies have been made and don't sell for high prices. Your violin was made after 1918, when Czechoslovakia was created. Recently, a violin like yours that included the case sold for $57. *** Q: I have a brass tea set that has sat unused for many years. Should I polish it or leave the natural patina? A: You should polish your brass tea set with a commercial brass polish. If it's heavily tarnished or corroded, take it to a professional. Some brass has been lacquered to prevent tarnish and should not be polished. Polishing damages the lacquer. If the lacquer is peeling, you should go to a professional restorer.
This is an Indian-style beaded cradle, but it holds a European doll. It was made about 1900 at an Indian boarding school and sold for $11,070. Button, plique-a-jour enamel glass, green and white, silver dome frame, mistletoe design, openwork, 1800s, 1 1/2-inch diameter, $2,525. *** TIP: Nineteenth-century Indian blankets generally are not restored by museums. They are stabilized, mounted on a backing fabric to prevent further damage, and hung or framed. It is thought that even the dirt may be wanted in original state in the future.
*** CURRENT PRICES Button, animal rescue league, Boston, Mass., dog photo, tin lithograph, blue and gold, pinback, 1930s, 1-inch diameter, $25. Musical instrument, temple drum, ritual, wood with yak skin, double leather, symbols, forged nails, Tibet, c. 1905, 7 x 23 inches, $450.
