• Henry Ford II unveiled the company’s brand-new sports car, the Ford Mustang, at the New York City World’s Fair on April 17, 1964. The car made its debut at dealerships across the country on the same day, experiencing sales of nearly 22,000 cars. By the end of the first year of production, 400,000 Mustangs had been sold. Did you know that the Mustang took its name from a World War II plane, a fighter that cost about $51,000 to build at that time?

OPEN LATE!

• The American Civil War began on April 12, 1861 when, under General P.G.T. Beauregard’s orders, Confederate forces opened fire on the Union’s Fort Sumter in South Carolina’s Charleston Bay. The war continued for just shy of four years, ending on April 9, 1865, when Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered his Army to Union General Ulysses S. Grant. • Slow down! That’s what the state of Connecticut said when they became the first state to pass a speed limit law on May 21, 1901. The new regulation restricted motor vehicles to 12 mph (19.3 km/hr) in the city and 15 mph 24 (km/hr) on country roads.

• Spring has always been a busy time in the world of baseball. April 20, 1912 marked the opening day of both Detroit’s Tiger Stadium and Boston’s Fenway Park, news which was overshadowed by the previous week’s sinking of the Titanic. The original Yankee Stadium opened in April, 1923, and the New York Mets’ Shea Stadium had opening day in April, 1964. The world’s first domed sports stadium, the Houston Astrodome opened the following year. Built at a cost of $37 million, the Astrodome boasted a sophisticated air conditioning system. On opening night, the Astros battled the New York Yankees in an exhibition game, and Mickey Mantle hit the stadium’s first home run. • On May 2, 1939, the great New York Yankees first baseman Lou Gehrig ended his 2,130- games-played streak when he benched himself for poor play. His final game had been April 30, and he never played again. Gehrig knew something was wrong, but didn’t know his diagnosis would be amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), now commonly called “Lou Gehrig’s Disease.” Lou Gehrig Day was held at Yankee Stadium two months later on July 4th, and as 60,000 fans looked on, Gehrig made his famous statement, “Today, I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the earth.” He passed away two years later at age 37. continued on page 2 ...

SPRING HAS SPRUNG (continued):

• Earth Day was first observed in April of 1970, with 20 million participants. It was the brainstorm of U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin, who came up with the idea after touring a disastrous oil spill in the Santa Barbara, California area. In his words, “It had been troubling me that the state of our environment was simply a non-issue in the politics of the country.” • April 19, 1897 marked the first running of the Boston Marathon, with 15 runners at the starting line. John J. McDermott, representing the Pastime Athletic Club of New York City, was the inaugural winner with a time of 2:55:10, nearly seven minutes ahead of the next competitor. The men’s record, set in 2011, is 2:03:02, while the best women’s time is 2:19:59, a record achieved in 2014. • “The Wedding of the Century” took place on April 18, 1956 when actress Grace Kelly married Monaco’s Prince Rainier III. Thirty-six seamstresses worked on 26-yearold Kelly’s wedding dress for six weeks in preparation for the nuptials. After meeting at the Cannes Film Festival, the pair corresponded for eight months before Rainier traveled to America to meet her family, proposing to Grace three days later. Before the marriage plans could proceed, the family was required to provide a $2 million dowry. Following the ceremony attended by 600 guests, the royal couple departed for their seven-week Mediterranean honeymoon cruise aboard the prince’s yacht. • The month of April has had its share of tragedies. In 1995, the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City was bombed by Timothy McVeigh. In 1999, Colorado’s Columbine High School shootings occurred. It was also the month of the assassinations of President Abraham Lincoln and Martin Luther King, Jr. The sinking of the Titanic, the devastating nuclear accident at the

Soviet Union’s Chernobyl plant, the Boston Marathon bombing, and the Virginia Tech shooting also took place in April. • On May 18, 1980, 96 miles (154.5 km) south of Seattle, a 5.1-magnitude earthquake rocked Mount St. Helens, followed by a volcanic eruption rising 80,000 feet (24 km) into the sky. Rocks, ash, 1300-degree magma, and glacial ice thundered down the mountainside at a speed of 100 mph (161 km/hr). Fourteen miles (22.5 km) of the nearby Toutle River were buried in 150 feet (45.7 m) of the rubble. Ash was dumped in 11 U.S. states. In just seconds, the formerly 9,600-foot-high (2,926 m) mountain became 8,300 feet (2,530 m) tall. An estimated 57 people died, 27 of whom were never recovered. • Explorers Lewis and Clark and their party of 45 men departed St. Louis, Missouri, on May 14, 1804 with instructions to explore the Northwest from the Mississippi River to the Pacific Ocean. A 55-foot-long (16.8 m) keelboat and two smaller wooden rowboats carried the men up the Missouri River. Twelve men did not make the full journey, including seven who were court-martialed for reasons such as “behaving in an unbecoming manner,” being AWOL, “expressions of a mutinous nature,” and desertion. The expedition reached the Pacific Ocean in November of 1805. It took until the following September to return to St. Louis. • Academy Awards were handed out for the first time in May of 1929 at the Roosevelt Hotel in Hollywood. Although sound had just come to the movies, only silent films were allowed to compete that year. One of the first “talkies,” “The Jazz Singer” had recently been released, but was deemed ineligible, because the Academy thought it unfair for it to compete with silent films. As a result, there has only been one silent film, “Wings,” to ever win Best Picture. The Awards wouldn’t be known as Oscars for another 10 years. Legend has it that the Academy’s executive direct mentioned that the statuette reminded her of her Uncle Oscar.

* On April 8, 563 B.C., Gautama Buddha, the founder of Buddhism, is thought to have been born in what is now Nepal. Buddhist tradition had placed his birth in the 11th century B.C., until modern scholars determined he was likely born in the 6th century. * On April 18, 1775, as British troops march out of Boston on a mission to confiscate the American arsenal at Concord, Massachusetts, patriots Paul Revere and William Dawes set out on horseback to sound the alarm. Early on the morning of April 19, a British patrol captured Revere and briefly questioned him. * On April 15, 1783, the Continental Congress of the United States officially ratifies a preliminary peace treaty with Great Britain. Five months later, the Treaty of Paris was signed, bringing an end to the Revolutionary War. * On April 16, 1789, newly elected President George Washington leaves his Mount Vernon, Virginia, home and heads for New York, to be sworn in as the first American president. Washington had admitted that he would have preferred to stay in retirement. * On April 9, 1859, a 23-year-old Missouri youth named Samuel Clemens receives his steamboat pilot's license. Clemens is better known by the pseudonym "Mark Twain," a boatman's call noting that the river depth was two fathoms (12 feet) and safe for travel. * On April 22, 1889, at precisely high noon, some 50,000 to 60,000 would-be settlers make a mad dash into the newly opened Oklahoma Territory to claim cheap land. Towns like Norman, Oklahoma City, Kingfisher and Guthrie sprang up almost overnight.

* On April 14, 1912, the luxury liner RMS Titanic, on its maiden voyage, fails to divert its course from an iceberg, ruptures its hull and begins to sink. Of the estimated 2,224 passengers and crew aboard, some 1,500 were killed. * On April 7, 1945, the Japanese battleship Yamato, purportedly the greatest battleship in the world, is sunk in Japan's first major counteroffensive in the struggle for Okinawa. It sank after being struck by 19 American aerial torpedoes, drowning 2,498 of its crew. * On April 12, 1945, while on a vacation, President Franklin Roosevelt suffers a stroke and dies. FDR had been elected president four times and had served for more than 12 years, the only president ever to serve more than two terms. * On April 11, 1951, President Harry Truman relieves the flamboyant and egotistical Gen. Douglas MacArthur of command of U.S. forces in Korea. The firing set off a brief uproar among the American public, and he returned home to a hero's welcome. * On April 10, 1963, the atomic submarine USS Thresher sinks in the North Atlantic during deep-diving tests, killing the entire 129 man crew. An investigation found that a silver-brazed joint in the engine room had caused a short in critical electrical systems. * On April 13, 1970, disaster strikes 200,000 miles from Earth when oxygen tank No. 2 blows up on Apollo 13. Commander James Lovell reported to mission control on Earth: "Houston, we've had a problem here." Using dramatic and untested maneuvers, Apollo 13 touched down safely in the Pacific Ocean four days later. (c) 2018 Hearst Communications, Inc. All Rights Reserved

But that's not the end of it. In the works are "Cagney & Lacey," with Sarah Drew ("Grey's Anatomy") and Michelle Hurd ("Blindspot") in the title roles; "Murphy Brown," with Candice Bergen; the CW's "Charmed," with Madeleine Mantock ("The Tomorrow People"), Melonie Diaz ("Fruitvale Station") and Sarah Jeffery ("Shades of Blue"). Still more reboots of "Roswell," with Nathan Parsons ("The Originals"); "Lost in Space," with Molly Parker ("House of Cards"); "Prison Break," with at least 10 episodes with original cast-member Wentworth Miller; "Sons of Anarchy," with Edward James Olmos; "Miami Vice," with Vin Diesel (as one of the producers); and "Jersey Shore," with most of the original cast.

HOLLYWOOD -- How could we know that when Netflix revived "Full House" (1987-95) as "Fuller House" and "The Gilmore Girls" (2000-07) as four seasonal movies, that it would unleash a flood of reboots the likes of which we've never seen? Already revived or rebooted are "Will & Grace," "MacGyver," "Hawaii Five-0," "Dynasty," "One Day at a Time," "Girl Meets World," "The X-Files," "Twin Peaks" and most recently, "Queer Eye (for the Straight Guy)" and "Roseanne."

In addition, pilots have been commissioned for a new "Twilight Zone"; "The Greatest American Hero," with a female in the title role; "Party of Five," with Latino siblings; "Hart to Hart," with a gay couple as the Harts; "Bewitched" and "The Office." Why do these shows again? The studios that made these series can't make money unless they reboot them, which also is why film studios keep making the same movies over and over again. Also, they'd rather take a chance on a proven property than invest in a new show that they're

not sure will get high ratings. If they're half as good as "Will & Grace," "MacGyver" and "Hawaii Five-0," it'll be better than what the networks have been dishing out lately. *** In movie news, "The Black Panther" has sailed past the $1 billion mark and overtaken "Frozen" and "Harry Potter and the Deadly Hallows: Part 2" to become the 14th top-grossing film of all time, while "Star Wars: The Last Jedi," is sitting at No. 8. Casey Affleck, Oscar winner for "Manchester By the Sea" (2016), has written, directed and stars in "Light of My Life," with Anna Pniowsky, and currently is shooting "The Old Man and the Gun," with Robert Redford, Sissy Spacek, Danny Glover and Elisabeth Moss. Redford said his last two films would be Netflix's 2017 "Our Souls at Night," with Jane Fonda; and the newly released "The Discovery," with Rooney Mara. He has obviously reconsidered retiring, cause if he does, it will definitely make us re-evaluate "The Way We Were," and the way we are! (c) 2018 King Features Synd., Inc.

Q: When will CBS sire the next season of "Elementary"? We've been waiting for quite a while. I really enjoy your articles each week. -- Dennis G., via email A: The sixth season of the procedural crime drama, which is based on the characters and cases in the canon of "Sherlock Holmes," is set to premiere on Monday, April 30, at 10 p.m. ET. And here's some more good news: CBS ordered eight additional episodes for this season, bringing the episode count up to 21 (although that is down from its normal 24). Jonny Lee Miller, Lucy Liu, Aidan Quinn and Jon Michael Hill all are set to return, with Desmond Harrington joining the cast as a series regular. Hopefully we'll find out what is going on with Sherlock after last season's cliffhanger of his MRI to find out why he's been experiencing memory loss and hallucinations. CBS also announced that the third season of "Code Black" will premiere on Wednesday, May 2, at 10 p.m. ET. The medical thriller follows first-year residents and their colleagues at Angels Memorial Hospital. Marcia Gay Harden leads an ensemble cast that also includes Boris Kodjoe, Harry Ford, Benjamin Hollingsworth, William Allen Young, Emily Tyra, Noah Gray-Cabey, Emily Alyn Lind, Moon Bloodgood, Luis Guzman and Rob Lowe. *** Q: I remember you featured an interview with Catherine Bell late last year, and she said that the next season of "Good Witch" would be coming up in the spring. Can you tell me if Hallmark has issued a release date yet? -- Kelli G., West Palm Beach, Florida A: The network recently announced that the season four premiere of "Good Witch" will be Sunday, April 29 (9 p.m. ET/PT), marking the 10th anniversary of the network's most popular movie franchise. It began with "The Good Witch" in 2008, the first of seven highly successful mov-

ies that led to the launch of the prime-time series, which routinely appears in the top-five shows on ad-supported cable on an incredibly competitive Sunday night. In season four, Cassie Nightingale (played by Catherine) and Sam (James Denton) are newly engaged and slowly work on wedding plans while helping their kids, Grace (Bailee Madison) and Nick (Rhys Bond), mend their friendship. Grace's senior year of high school finds her uncertain about plans for college, bringing a bittersweet lesson about life and love. As Cassie and Sam's wedding day approaches, Cassie conjures up a magical day in the way that only she can. *** Q: One of my favorite books in recent years is "Little Fires Everywhere." Is it true it's being made into a movie? -- Vivian F., via email A: The bestselling novel by Celeste Ng is being adapted -- not as a movie, but rather as a limited series (much like "Big Little Lies"). Hulu landed the series after a huge bidding war, with Reese Witherspoon and Kerrie Washington on board as producers and stars of the series. * Look into the Lifeline program. You may qualify for low-cost Internet and phone. Check into Meals on Wheels, too. * Use the library for new books by your favorite authors. Sign up on Amazon to get email notices when an author is about to come out with something new. Then go to your library's website and put a hold on that book right away.

FINDING EXTRA DOLLARS Every dollar counts in retirement, but there are certain things we can't do without, like food. If you look for ways to save a few dollars here and there, it will add up. Here are some tips:

* Check into zero-interest credit cards to pay off other balances. * Look into property tax exemptions, and LIHEAP to reduce your heating costs. * Ask your pharmacist about special discount plans. Yes, some places have them. But above all, get used to asking, "Do you offer a senior discount?"

* Grocery shop once a week, with a list. You'll spend less because you'll only be in the store once and won't be tempted to pick up extra items. Avoid aisles that don't have anything on your list. * Work from a weekly meal plan so you'll have all the ingredients. If you find yourself eating the same things over and over, search online for new low-cost recipes.

CUT CABLE, SAVE MONEY

With Roku alone you can access thousands of channels, many of them free. Some will cost you a few dollars a month. Before you sign up for any channels, give yourself a month of sampling what you can get on your device for free. If you're ready to venture out and add channels, consider Netflix for its thousands of movies, as well as full seasons of TV shows, although they're a year late. Hulu, on the other hand, airs many network shows the next day or week. If you're an Amazon Prime customer, look through its movie and TV offerings for no additional cost, or access premium channels (such as HBO and Showtime) at a discount. That's where you need to beware. Make your choices carefully, or you run the risk of signing up for so many that it equals the cable bill you just got rid of. Take it one step at a time. Your best bet to start: a Roku and Netflix.

* Compare all the weekly flyers and prices.

If your cable bill keeps climbing, you don't have to give up your television. There is a way to keep watching your shows and movies at a fraction of the cost. It's called cord cutting.

* If you're near a big-box store, consider shopping with a friend and splitting up the large multi-packs. Or, if you think you'll use it enough, team up with a friend for an Amazon Prime membership and order online.

"Cord cutting" means that you can dump your cable company, replace it with a small indoor HDTV antenna and a streaming device, and sign up for individual services for much less than you're paying now.

* If you pay your insurance by the month, you likely pay a few dollars extra every month. If you can, pay by the year.

There are new streaming devices every day: Roku, the Roku stick, Amazon Fire stick and more. Roku connects

Here the awards are known as the Oscars, but other nations have their own names: In Canada they're known as Genies, in France they're Cesars, in Russia they're called Nikas, in Mexico they're Golden Ariels, in Spain they're known as Goyas, and in the United Kingdom they're called BAFTAs (formerly the Orange British Academy Film Awards). * Here's a disturbing statistic for parents: If your child is like the average American youth, between the ages of 5 and 15 they will see approximately 13,500 people killed on television.

* Swedish chemist and engineer Alfred Nobel, famed inventor of dynamite and originator of the Nobel Prizes, could speak five languages fluently by the time he was 17 years old. * Most languages change dramatically over time. If we in modern America were to try to read, say, "Beowulf" (which was written in Old English), only those who have spent time studying the language would be able to make out more than a word or two here and there. If you're from Iceland, however, this isn't the case; the written language there has remained virtually unchanged for more than 1,000 years. Modern Icelanders have no trouble reading sagas that were written in the 10th century. * You might be surprised to learn that there are people who study how air quality, humidity, the hardness of the water and pollution affect people's hair. According to these researchers, the worst American cities for your tresses are Corpus Christi, Texas; Olympia, Washington; and Pittsburgh. * A chicken, a sheep and a duck get in the basket of a hot air balloon. No, that's not the first line of a joke; they really were passengers on a hot air balloon -- the very first passengers in that type of conveyance, as a matter of fact. * Those who study such things say that fully one-third of all your brainpower is used for vision. *** Thought for the Day: "I always find it more difficult to say the things I mean than the things I don't." -- W. Somerset Maugham (c) 2018 King Features Synd., Inc.

Next, place their crates in the car and drive around, so they get used to being in the crates while in motion. Finally, add a louder noise element to the acclimation: Take the car through an automatic car wash, whose air dryers sound much like a jet engine. Give lots of treats and positive encouragement during these sessions, which should be repeated at least a couple of times a week leading up to the big trip home.

ACCLIMATE YOUR PET BEFORE THE BIG TRIP DEAR PAW'S CORNER: A few months ago, I moved across the country for a temporary contract job. I didn't want to uproot my two dogs, "Skip" and "Trace," and my ex-girlfriend was happy to care for them. Since then, the job has become permanent, and I plan to fly my dogs here. I'm worried about sending them in the cargo hold of an aircraft, however. Is there any way to ensure they won't be stressed out? -- Carl in San Diego DEAR CARL: It is possible to acclimate your pets, somewhat, to the stresses of travel -- whether by car or airplane. You'll need to enlist your ex to help prepare them for the trip, and if possible, be on the same flight to their new home so you can greet them as soon as they're offloaded, further minimizing that stress. Acclimating Skip and Trace to travel starts with getting them accustomed to the sturdy travel crates each of them needs to be in. Put nonslip padding on the floor of each crate, along with lightweight bedding, a chew toy, water and a piece of clothing with your scent on it. Have them go into their crates on command, giving a treat when they do.

SHOULD SHOCK COLLARS BE BANNED IN U.S.? DEAR PAW'S CORNER: What do you think about England banning "shock collars," which give dogs a mild electric shock when they misbehave or try to cross an electric-fence boundary? -- Jim H., via email DEAR JIM: I'm all for it. Shock collars are just plain cruel. Never mind that they give purely negative feedback, something that should be limited when training a dog. England's ban will take effect this year. Other parts of Britain already have banned or are considering a ban on the use of shock collars, including Wales and Scotland.

Here in the U.S., however, there is no such legislation that I know of in any state that bans the sale or use of shock collars. A growing movement is taking shape, however: The Animal Rescue Site is circulating a petition and plans to deliver it to the House Committee on Agriculture, as well as the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture Animal Care. Organizations including the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior and the Humane Society of the United States have issued statements against the use of these collars. "The least humane and most controversial use of the shock collar is as a training device," the HSUS says on its website. As AVSAB says in its position paper on the issue, "Training should focus on reinforcing desired behaviors, removing the reinforcer for inappropriate behaviors, and addressing the emotional state and environmental conditions driving the undesirable behavior." In short, owners who want to train their dogs correctly should focus on positive reinforcement. If training a dog becomes difficult, consult a professional trainer rather than shift straight to a shock collar or choke collar. Stoneman Douglas High School -- did an amazing job. They ignited an outrage-fueled wildfire that spread to students at thousands of schools nationwide. They also captured the imagination of the logistic professionals financed by sympathetic adults. The result was an immense turnout and a well-choreographed and telegenic outpouring of angry frustration at a political system that is unresponsive and unable to cure our nation's illnesses, like the blight of deadly weaponry, that has so infected America.

EFFECTIVE ACTION OR GOOD FEELINGS? There are arguments over the number of those who participated in the March for Our Lives, as there always are disputes over crowd size at these mass demonstrations. Suffice it to say, a bunch of people took part. In Washington, the spat is over just how many hundred thousands flooded the nation's capital, to say nothing of those who turned out in hundreds of cities and towns throughout the United States and around the world. The organizers -- rank amateur teenagers who rose up from Parkland, Florida, after the massacre at Marjorie

In no way is this a criticism of the kids who put this together. It is skepticism over whether this immense show of force is enough to overcome the entrenched special interests that will do whatever it takes to protect their prosperity. One of the most perversely successful is the gun lobby, led by the National Rifle Association. Like a threatened monster, the NRA brutally lashes out whenever threatened. It didn't disappoint this time, derisively calling the enormous rallies a "March for Their Lies," heaping scorn on the Stoneman Douglas leaders who've become celebrities, charging that if their classmates had not died, "no one would know your names." So, the battle lines have been drawn. The problem is, the NRA has always won these battles. Each time the country is shocked to our core after a deadly slaughter of innocents by gunfire, the arms-merchant lobbyists swing into action and stifle any meaningful progress with bullying and demagoguery.

What will it take for the chants of "enough is enough" to become more than just a feel-good mantra? The purity of this outpouring must now dig into the dirt of politics to accomplish anything more than catharsis. Obviously. So there were voter sign-up spots throughout the rallies, but will those who are easily distracted actually sustain their focus on the campaign process and hold the candidates accountable by slogging nonstop for the several months before the midterm elections? Will they work for candidates who declare themselves in favor of meaningful gun-control measures and, more importantly, against those who receive support from the NRA? We in the media are fickle. Between gun bloodbaths, there are distractions everywhere. Some of them are consequential, such as the intrigue of the Robert Mueller investigation into whether Trump and his associates sold out the last election and our country to the Russians. There also is our siren song of seedy sex stuff, featuring Stormy Daniels, Karen McDougal and lots of others. The Stormy Daniels interview on "60 Minutes" may have been just unworthy hype, but it got huge ratings. The challenge for the hundreds of thousands who turned out for the March for Our Lives will be to maintain the enthusiasm and public focus on cutting back guns, which are America's real obscenity. ples of events that trigger memories might be the invention of boxed cakes, the end of World War II and men walking on the moon. --Email family and friends requesting that they send you a note, a drawing or a poem recalling special memories of the birthday person. Compile in a scrapbook with a picture of the "star" on the cover. *** Donna Erickson's award-winning series "Donna's Day" is airing on public television nationwide. To find more of her creative family recipes and activities, visit www.donnasday.com and link to the NEW Donna's Day Facebook fan page. Her latest book is "Donna Erickson's Fabulous Funstuff for Families."

JOGGING MEMORIES WITH A SCRAPBOOK I recently woke up to a spring morning of happy birthday surprises: warm sunshine instead of snow, bouquets of pink tulips from my kids, and a stream of well wishes from Facebook friends. Toggling down the page, I felt like I had jumped on the International Space Station as I connected with former students, neighbors and colleagues living around the globe -- wishes from Congo and Zambia, and from France, Sweden and England. Then China, Alaska and Canada. I orbited again and again, caught up in the ride and with the memories of people and places in my life. But what if you can't recall the details of life's memories -- your daughter's birthday or your grandson's name -- quite like before? That thought hit home when my 90-year-old mother began showing signs of memory loss that affected how she managed her daily routine. When remembering to take her meds at specific times throughout the day and how to prepare meals became elusive, she moved from independence to assisted living at a retirement community. I discovered, through the transition, that her memories of days gone by were still there; they just needed triggers once in a while to fetch them from "storage." Like my own cluttered attic, I don't remember what is actually up there until I start rummaging around the dusty boxes and bins.

(c) 2018 Donna Erickson Distributed by King Features Synd.

Mom's photo albums, slides and a cedar chest filled with heirlooms and handwritten letters tied in neat bundles serve to jog her memory and prompt the stories only she could tell when my kids and I visited her. Looking at pictures on our computers is also a hit. So, for her birthday, I decided to pull 100 recent photos of family, friends, trips and activities from her 90th year. I ordered colored prints and arranged them on pages of a big scrapbook, with empty spaces for her to write captions as we talked about the photos together. The remaining pages are filled with "Happy 90th Birthday" cards attached with double-stick tape. When her family stopped by, her "coffee table birthday book" was an enjoyable way to connect ... and remember. DEAR DR. ROACH: I have worked in a loud facility for 35 years and have always worn protection and had my hearing tested annually. Several years ago, I had a threshold shift (a loss in my hearing range), and the plant nurse sent me to a hearing specialist. He said that my hearing loss is not due to noise exposure. I asked how he could tell, but I didn't get a satisfactory answer. I later asked my primary care physician, and he didn't know. How do you determine from the result of a test whether hearing loss is caused by noise exposure or other factors, such as illness or injury? Would a hearing aid be effective? -- J.G. ANSWER: A comprehensive exam and hearing testing can show whether the hearing loss is likely due to loud noise exposure, based on the pattern of hearing loss across different frequencies. However, I don't think that there is 100 percent certainty about making or excluding noise exposure as the cause of the hearing loss from the pattern. I would think that an independent evaluation, by a certified audiologist and your own ENT doctor, might give you additional information, including a discussion about how much benefit you might get from a hearing aid. The Hearing Loss Association of America (on the Web at www.hearingloss.org) can provide you some support and guidance through this process. *** DEAR DR. sitting back to chew, bending forward toward the table, over and over. It almost looks like he's doing situps while seated, and I think this must contribute to stomach acid pushing up. During the 10 days that he was away, he was sitting at a proper-height table when eating all his meals. What are your thoughts? He won't listen to me, because I'm not a doctor! -- A.C. ANSWER: Believe me, being a doctor doesn't mean people always listen to you. However, I do hope your father listens to you, because I agree with you that his eating position may contribute to mechanical acid reflux: The increased pressure from his bent-over position may be forcing acid up into his esophagus. However, being on holiday may lead to other reasons he was not bothered. Maybe he was avoiding foods that cause symptoms. Maybe he was feeling less stressed. It's possible he ate earlier and went to bed a

cardiovascular disease incidence rates, and mortality. Those with BMIs higher than 24.9 increased their risk for heart disease, developed heart disease earlier in life, and were more likely to die from a cardiovascular event when compared to those with lower BMIs. Researchers observed a higher average number of years spent living with cardiovascular disease in overweight and obese individuals and note that overweight individuals appear to live longer due to earlier onset of the disease.

VEGETARIAN DIETS LOWER RISK FOR LIVER DISEASE Vegetarian diets lower the risk for nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, according to a study published in the Tzu Chi Medical Journal. Researchers followed 3,400 participants and compared dietary patterns with fatty liver and liver fibrosis incidence. Vegetarians had a lower risk for fatty liver disease and less severe liver fibrosis (scarring), compared with nonvegetarians. The types of foods consumed impacted results, with soy and whole grains imparting protective effects when consumed instead of meat/fish and refined carbohydrates, respectively.

longer time after eating, which allows the stomach to empty so there is less acid at night, when more damage to the esophagus can occur due to the loss of gravity and swallowing. Sometimes several lifestyle choices are needed to address GERD. I always prefer to work on those before prescribing medication treatments, especially because the proton pump inhibitors like omeprazole have long-term side effects that are best avoided, if possible. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. PLANT-BASED DIETS REDUCE HEART DISEASE RISK FACTORS Plant-based diets reduce blood pressure, cholesterol, weight, and other heart disease risk factors more effectively than medications, according to two new studies published in the journals Clinical Cardiology and Circulation. Thirty-one participants adopted a plant-based diet while researchers tracked their anthropometric data. After 4 weeks, the authors observed reductions in blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and medication use and other improvements including insulin sensitivity, heart rate, C-reactive protein (a marker of inflammation), and weight loss. Data also showed improvements in lipoproteins associated with plaque formations in overweight and obese individuals with high cholesterol. These data support plant-based diets and other lifestyle interventions as effective means for cardiovascular disease treatment and prevention. *** Q: We've just been given a set of silverware that we were told is 100-plus years old. It belonged to a friend of my husband's grandmother who gave it to his mother about 1910. It's a service for eight and pieces are marked "Lake Betty Silver Plate" on the backs. All are in excellent condition in a leather, velvet-lined case. We are wondering if the set has any value, other than sentimental.

UNDERDOG IS HERE Many comic book, movie and TV heroes are so popular that they inspire hundreds of different collectibles. Often, interest in the characters dies about 25 years after the last new episode of their shows are shown. Some have continued to be popular because of TV reruns and their rebirth in new movies, comics or even plays. "Underdog" was one of the characters created in 1959 for television cartoons selling General Mills cereal. He formerly was Shoeshine Boy, who went into a phone booth to take a pill that turned him into the superpowered Underdog. He always damaged the booth and spoke in rhymes. In 1969, the show lost its sponsor, but 62 shows continued in syndication. They can be seen on TV, and other syndicated shows with Underdog as the hero were edited, rewritten and re-bundled to remain on TV until the late 1990s.

A: Your silver-plated flatware is not as old as you think it is. The pattern name is Lady Betty and was introduced by International Silver Co. of Meriden, Connecticut, in 1940. The company was formed when some independent silver makers merged in 1898. Silver plating by electricity began (in the U.S.) in 1847, earlier in England. By the 1880s, more than 40 firms, mostly centered near Meriden, made simple to elaborate silver-plated tableware until the 1980s. Silver-plated items generally have a modest value unless they are either very fancy or very rare. Your flatware is not worth much -- under $100 -- and places that buy silver to melt are looking for sterling silver, not silver plate.

Many years on the air have helped "Underdog" collectibles remain popular ... and expensive. A 1974 child's metal "Underdog" lunchbox and thermos sold at a Hakes. com auction in fall 2015 for $2,296. Other undiscovered "Underdog" memorabilia still is waiting in garage sales and flea markets, usually without the history that gives it value.
